Search

An investigation of relatively light (GeV-scale), long-lived right-handed neutrinos is performed within minimal left-right symmetric models using the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework. Light sterile neutrinos can be produced through rare decays of kaons, $D$-mesons, and $B$-mesons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) of Fermilab. Their decays could result in displaced vertices, which can be reconstructed. By performing Monte-Carlo simulations, we assess the sensitivities of the future LHC far-detector experiments ANUBIS, CODEX-b, FACET, FASER(2), MoEDAL-MAPP1(2), MATHUSLA, the recently approved beam-dump experiment SHiP, and the upcoming neutrino experiment DUNE at the LBNF, to the right-handed gauge-boson mass $M_{W_R}$ as functions of neutrino masses. We find that DUNE and SHiP could be sensitive to right-handed gauge-boson masses up to $\sim 25$ TeV. We compare this reach to indirect searches such as neutrinoless double beta decay, finding that displaced-vertex searches are very competitive.

The accuracy of $V_{ud}$ determinations from superallowed $\beta$ decays critically hinges on control over radiative corrections. Recently, substantial progress has been made on the single-nucleon, universal corrections, while nucleus-dependent effects, typically parameterized by a quantity $\delta_\text{NS}$, are much less well constrained. Here, we lay out a program to evaluate this correction from effective field theory (EFT), highlighting the dominant terms as predicted by the EFT power counting. Moreover, we compare the results to a dispersive representation of $\delta_\text{NS}$ and show that the expected momentum scaling applies even in the case of low-lying intermediate states. Radiative corrections are essential for an accurate determination of $V_{ud}$ from superallowed $\beta$ decays. In view of recent progress in the single-nucleon sector, the uncertainty is dominated by the theoretical description of nucleus-dependent effects, limiting the precision that can currently be achieved for $V_{ud}$. In this work, we provide a detailed account of the electroweak corrections to superallowed $\beta$ decays in effective field theory (EFT), including the power counting, potential and ultrasoft contributions, and factorization in the decay rate. We present a first numerical evaluation of the dominant corrections in light nuclei based on Quantum Monte Carlo methods, confirming the expectations from the EFT power counting. Finally, we discuss strategies how to extract from data the low-energy constants that parameterize short-distance contributions and whose values are not predicted by the EFT. Combined with advances in ab-initio nuclear-structure calculations, this EFT framework allows one to systematically address the dominant uncertainty in $V_{ud}$, as illustrated in detail for the $^{14}$O $\to$ $^{14}$N transition., Comment: 44 pages, 9 figures; journal version

Recent developments in the Standard Model analysis of semileptonic charged-current processes involving light quarks have revealed $\sim 3\sigma$ tensions in Cabibbo universality tests involving meson, neutron, and nuclear beta decays. In this paper, we explore beyond the Standard Model explanations of this so-called Cabibbo Angle Anomaly in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), including not only low-energy charged current processes (`L'), but also electroweak precision observables (`EW') and Drell-Yan collider processes (`C') that probe the same underlying physics across a broad range of energy scales. The resulting `CLEW' framework not only allows one to test explanations of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly, but is set up to provide near model-independent analyses with minimal assumptions on the flavor structure of the SMEFT operators. Besides the global analysis, we consider a large number of simpler scenarios, each with a subset of SMEFT operators, and investigate how much they improve upon the Standard Model fit. We find that the most favored scenarios, as judged by the Akaike Information Criterion, are those that involve right-handed charged currents. Additional interactions, namely oblique operators, terms modifying the Fermi constant, and operators involving right-handed neutral currents, play a role if the CDF determination of the $W$ mass is included in the analysis., Comment: 70 pages, 16 figures, Supplemental Material included in ancillary files

At the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a proton beam hits a fixed target leading to large production rates of mesons. These mesons can decay and potentially provide a source of long-lived neutral fermions. Examples of such long-lived fermions are heavy neutral leptons which can mix with the standard-model active neutrinos, and the bino-like lightest neutralino in R-parity-violating supersymmetry. We show that the Standard Model Effective Field Theory extended with right-handed singlet neutrinos can simultaneously describe heavy neutral leptons and bino-like neutralinos in a unified manner. Axions provide a solution to the strong CP problem and are excellent dark matter candidates. The presence of additional sources of CP violation, for example to account for the matter/antimatter asymmetry of the universe, can lead to CP-violating interactions between axions and Standard Model fields. In case axions form a coherent dark matter background, this leads to time-oscillating fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant and particle masses. In this work we compare the sensitivity of various searches for CP-odd axion interactions. These include fifth-force experiments, searches for time-oscillating constants induced by axion dark matter, and direct limits from electric dipole moment experiments. We show that searches for oscillating constants can outperform fifth-force experiments in the regime of small axion masses, but, in general, do not reach the sensitivity of electric dipole moment experiments., Comment: v2 corresponds to the published version

We present $\nu$DoBe, a Python tool for the computation of neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) rates in terms of lepton-number-violating operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The tool can be used for automated calculations of $0\nu\beta\beta$ rates, electron spectra and angular correlations for all isotopes of experimental interest, for lepton-number-violating operators up to and including dimension 9. The tool takes care of renormalization-group running to lower energies and provides the matching to the low-energy effective field theory and, at lower scales, to a chiral effective field theory description of $0\nu\beta\beta$ rates. The user can specify different sets of nuclear matrix elements from various many-body methods and hadronic low-energy constants. The tool can be used to quickly generate analytical and numerical expressions for $0\nu\beta\beta$ rates and to generate a large variety of plots. We investigate neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the minimal extension of the standard model of particle physics, the $\nu$SM, where gauge-singlet right-handed neutrinos give rise to Dirac and Majorana neutrino mass terms. We focus on the associated sterile neutrinos and argue that the usual evaluation of their contributions to $0\nu\beta\beta$, based on mass-dependent nuclear matrix elements, is missing important contributions from neutrinos with ultrasoft and hard momenta. We identify the hadronic and nuclear matrix elements that enter the new contributions, and calculate all relevant nuclear matrix elements for $^{136}$Xe using the nuclear shell model. Finally, we illustrate the impact on $0\nu\beta\beta$ rates in specific neutrino mass models and show that the new contributions significantly alter the $0\nu\beta\beta$ rate in most parts of the $\nu$SM parameter space., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We investigate neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay rates in minimal left-right symmetric models in presence of relatively light right-handed neutrinos. By use of an effective field theory approach, we systematically include all contributions in the model as well as the dependence of the decay amplitude on the masses of right-handed neutrinos. In type-I and type-II seesaw scenarios, we analyze the impact of right-handed neutrinos heavier than about 10 MeV, showing that this effect can lead to a detection of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in the next-generation experiments even for the normal hierarchy and a relatively large right-handed scale set by the mass of hypothetical right-handed gauge bosons. We point out the necessity to consider $\beta$-decay observables in resolutions of the $W$-boson anomaly in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that go beyond pure oblique corrections. We demonstrate that present global analyses that explain the $W$-boson mass anomaly predict a large, percent-level, violation of first-row CKM unitarity. We investigate what solutions to the $W$-boson mass anomaly survive after including $\beta$-decay constraints.

The observation of neutrino oscillations and hence non-zero neutrino masses provided a milestone in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. But even though we now know that neutrinos are massive, the nature of neutrino masses, i.e., whether they are Dirac or Majorana, remains an open question. A smoking-gun signature of Majorana neutrinos is the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay, a process that violates the lepton-number conservation of the Standard Model. This white paper focuses on the theoretical aspects of the neutrinoless double-beta decay program and lays out a roadmap for future developments. The roadmap is a multi-scale path starting from high-energy models of neutrinoless double-beta decay all the way to the low-energy nuclear many-body problem that needs to be solved to supplement measurements of the decay rate. The path goes through a systematic effective-field-theory description of the underlying processes at various scales and needs to be supplemented by lattice quantum chromodynamics input. The white paper also discusses the interplay between neutrinoless double-beta decay, experiments at the Large Hadron Collider and results from astrophysics and cosmology in probing simplified models of lepton-number violation at the TeV scale, and the generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry via leptogenesis. Static electric dipole moments of nondegenerate systems probe mass scales for physics beyond the Standard Model well beyond those reached directly at high energy colliders. Discrimination between different physics models, however, requires complementary searches in atomic-molecular-and-optical, nuclear and particle physics. High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We compute the electromagnetic corrections to neutron beta decay using a low-energy hadronic effective field theory. We identify and compute new radiative corrections arising from virtual pions that were missed in previous studies. The largest correction is a percent-level shift in the axial charge of the nucleon proportional to the electromagnetic part of the pion-mass splitting. Smaller corrections, comparable to anticipated experimental precision, impact the $\beta$-$\nu$ angular correlations and the $\beta$-asymmetry. We comment on implications of our results for the comparison of the experimentally measured axial charge with first-principle computations using lattice QCD and on the potential of $\beta$-decay experiments to constrain beyond-the-Standard-Model interactions.

Large numbers of $\tau$ leptons are produced at Belle II. These could potentially decay into sterile neutrinos that, for the mass range under consideration, are typically long-lived, leading to displaced-vertex signatures. Here, we study a displaced-vertex search sterile-neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory. The production and decay of the sterile neutrinos can be realized via either the standard active-sterile neutrino mixing or higher-dimensional operators in the effective Lagrangian. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations to estimate the Belle II sensitivities to such interactions. One class of solutions to the strong CP problem relies on generalized parity symmetries. A minimal model of this type, constructed by Babu and Mohapatra and based on a softly broken parity symmetry, has the remarkable property that effective QCD vacuum angle $\bar\theta$ vanishes up to one-loop order. We compute the leading two-loop contributions to $\bar\theta$ in this model and estimate subleading contributions. In contrast to previous estimates, we argue that $\bar \theta$ is not suppressed by the weak scale, and we find contributions of order $10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$ multiplying unknown mixing angles and phases. Thus the model does not generically address the strong CP problem, but it might be made consistent with $\bar\theta<10^{-10}$ in some corners of parameter space. For such non-generic parameters, $\bar\theta$ is still likely to be just below present bounds, and therefore provides the dominant source of hadronic EDMs. We discuss the resulting EDM phenomenology., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

We perform a global analysis of the low-energy phenomenology of the minimal left-right symmetric model (mLRSM) with parity symmetry. We match the mLRSM to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory Lagrangian at the left-right-symmetry breaking scale and perform a comprehensive fit to low-energy data including mesonic, neutron, and nuclear $\beta$-decay processes, $\Delta F=1$ and $\Delta F=2$ CP-even and -odd processes in the bottom and strange sectors, and electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons, nuclei, and atoms. We fit the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa and mLRSM parameters simultaneously and determine a lower bound on the mass of the right-handed $W_R$ boson. In models where a Peccei-Quinn mechanism provides a solution to the strong CP problem, we obtain $M_{W_R} \gtrsim 5.5$ TeV at $95\%$ C.L. which can be significantly improved with next-generation EDM experiments. In the $P$-symmetric mLRSM without a Peccei-Quinn mechanism we obtain a more stringent constraint $M_{W_R} \gtrsim 17$ TeV at $95\%$ C.L., which is difficult to improve with low-energy measurements alone. In all cases, the additional scalar fields of the mLRSM are required to be a few times heavier than the right-handed gauge bosons. We consider a recent discrepancy in tests of first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. We find that, while TeV-scale $W_R$ bosons can alleviate some of the tension found in the $V_{ud,us}$ determinations, a solution to the discrepancy is disfavored when taking into account other low-energy observables within the mLRSM., Comment: 42 pages plus appendices. Effective field theory arguments suggest that if BSM sectors contain new sources of CP-violation that couple to QCD, these sources will renormalize the $\theta$ term and frustrate ultraviolet solutions to the strong CP problem. Simultaneously, they will generate distinctive patterns of low-energy electric dipole moments in hadronic, nuclear, atomic, and molecular systems. Observing such patterns thus provides evidence that strong CP is solved by an infrared relaxation mechanism. We illustrate the renormalization of $\theta$ and the collections of EDMs generated in a several models of BSM physics, confirming effective field theory expectations, and demonstrate that measurements of ratios of electric dipole moments at planned experiments can provide valuable input on the resolution of the strong CP problem., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

We investigate contributions to the anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons in the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory ($\nu$SMEFT). We discuss how $\nu$SMEFT operators can contribute to a lepton's magnetic moment at one- and two-loop order. We show that only one operator can account for existing electronic and muonic discrepancies, assuming new physics appears above $1$ TeV. In particular, we find that a right-handed charged current in combination with minimal sterile-active mixing can explain the discrepancy for sterile neutrino masses of $\mathcal O(100)$ GeV while avoiding direct and indirect constraints. Charged currents are probed in low-energy precision $\beta$-decay experiments and at high-energy colliders, both of which aim to measure or constrain signals of beyond-the-Standard-Model physics. In light of future $\beta$-decay and LHC measurements that will further explore these non-standard interactions, we investigate what neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) experiments can tell us if a nonzero signal were to be found. Using a recently developed effective-field-theory framework, we consider the effects that interactions with right-handed neutrinos have on $0\nu\beta\beta$ and discuss the range of neutrino masses that current and future $0\nu\beta\beta$ measurements can probe, assuming neutrinos are Majorana particles. For non-standard interactions at the level suggested by recently observed hints in $\beta$ decays, we show that next-generation $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiments can determine the Dirac or Majorana nature of neutrinos, for sterile neutrino masses larger than $\mathcal O(10)$ eV., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

We present a method to determine the leading-order (LO) contact term contributing to the $nn \to pp e^-e^-$ amplitude through the exchange of light Majorana neutrinos. Our approach is based on the representation of the amplitude as the momentum integral of a known kernel (proportional to the neutrino propagator) times the generalized forward Compton scattering amplitude $n(p_1) n(p_2) W^+ (k) \to p(p_1^\prime) p(p_2^\prime) W^- (k)$, in analogy to the Cottingham formula for the electromagnetic contribution to hadron masses. We construct model-independent representations of the integrand in the low- and high-momentum regions, through chiral EFT and the operator product expansion, respectively. We then construct a model for the full amplitude by interpolating between these two regions, using appropriate nucleon factors for the weak currents and information on nucleon-nucleon ($N\! N$) scattering in the $^1S_0$ channel away from threshold. By matching the amplitude obtained in this way to the LO chiral EFT amplitude we obtain the relevant LO contact term and discuss various sources of uncertainty. We validate the approach by computing the analog $I = 2$ $N\! N$ contact term and by reproducing, within uncertainties, the charge-independence-breaking contribution to the $^1S_0$ $N\! N$ scattering lengths. While our analysis is performed in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, we express our final result in terms of the scheme-independent renormalized amplitude ${\cal A}_\nu(|{\bf p}|,|{\bf p}^\prime|)$ at a set of kinematic points near threshold. The amplitude for the neutrinoless double $\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of the two-neutron system, $nn\to ppe^-e^-$, constitutes a key building block for nuclear-structure calculations of heavy nuclei employed in large-scale $0\nu\beta\beta$ searches. Assuming that the $0\nu\beta\beta$ process is mediated by a light-Majorana-neutrino exchange, a systematic analysis in chiral effective field theory shows that already at leading order a contact operator is required to ensure renormalizability. In this work, we develop a method to estimate the numerical value of its coefficient in analogy to the Cottingham formula and validate the result by reproducing the charge-independence-breaking contribution to the nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths. Our central result, while derived in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme, is given in terms of the renormalized amplitude $\mathcal{A}_\nu(|\mathbf{p}|,|\mathbf{p}^\prime|)$, matching to which will allow one to determine the contact-term contribution in regularization schemes employed in nuclear-structure calculations. We study the prospects of a displaced-vertex search of sterile neutrinos at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the framework of the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory ($\nu$SMEFT). The production and decay of sterile neutrinos can proceed via the standard active-sterile neutrino mixing in the weak current, as well as through higher-dimensional operators arising from decoupled new physics. If sterile neutrinos are long-lived, their decay can lead to displaced vertices which can be reconstructed. We investigate the search sensitivities for the ATLAS/CMS detector, the future far-detector experiments: AL3X, ANUBIS, CODEX-b, FASER, MATHUSLA, and MoEDAL-MAPP, and at the proposed fixed-target experiment SHiP. We study scenarios where sterile neutrinos are predominantly produced via rare charm and bottom mesons decays through minimal mixing and/or dimension-six operators in the $\nu$SMEFT Lagrangian. The origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry apparently obligates the laws of physics to include some mechanism of baryon number ($\mathcal{B}$) violation. Searches for interactions violating $\mathcal{B}$ and baryon-minus-lepton number $\mathcal{(B-L)}$ represent a rich and underutilized opportunity. These are complementary to the existing, broad program of searches for $\mathcal{L}$-violating modes such as neutrinoless double $\beta$-decay which could provide deeper understandings of the plausibility of leptogenesis, or $\mathcal{B}$-violating, $\mathcal{(B-L)}$-conserving processes such as proton decay. In particular, a low-scale, post-sphaleron violation mechanism of $\mathcal{(B-L)}$ could provide a \textit{testable} form of baryogenesis. Though theoretically compelling, searches for such $\mathcal{(B-L)}$-violating processes like $\Delta\mathcal{B}=2$ dinucleon decay and $n\rightarrow\bar{n}$ remain relatively underexplored experimentally compared to other rare processes. By taking advantage of upcoming facilities such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment and the European Spallation Source, this gap can be addressed with new intranuclear and free searches for neutron transformations with very high sensitivity, perhaps greater than three orders of magnitude higher than previous experimental searches. Electric dipole moments of nuclei, diamagnetic atoms, and certain molecules are induced by CP-violating nuclear forces. Naive dimensional analysis predicts these forces to be dominated by long-range one-pion-exchange processes, with short-range forces entering only at next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. Based on renormalization arguments we argue that a consistent picture of CP-violating nuclear forces requires a leading-order short-distance operator contributing to ${}^1S_0$-${}^3P_0$ transitions, due to the attractive and singular nature of the strong tensor force in the ${}^3P_0$ channel. The short-distance operator leads to $\mathcal O(1)$ corrections to static and oscillating, relevant for axion searches, electric dipole moments. We discuss strategies how the finite part of the associated low-energy constant can be determined in the case of CP violation from the QCD theta term by the connection to charge-symmetry violation in nuclear systems.

We investigate neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the presence of sterile neutrinos with Majorana mass terms. These gauge-singlet fields are allowed to interact with Standard-Model (SM) fields via renormalizable Yukawa couplings as well as higher-dimensional gauge-invariant operators up to dimension seven in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory extended with sterile neutrinos. At the GeV scale, we use Chiral effective field theory involving sterile neutrinos to connect the operators at the level of quarks and gluons to hadronic interactions involving pions and nucleons. This allows us to derive an expression for $0\nu\beta\beta$ rates for various isotopes in terms of phase-space factors, hadronic low-energy constants, nuclear matrix elements, the neutrino masses, and the Wilson coefficients of higher-dimensional operators. The needed hadronic low-energy constants and nuclear matrix elements depend on the neutrino masses, for which we obtain interpolation formulae grounded in QCD and chiral perturbation theory that improve existing formulae that are only valid in a small regime of neutrino masses. The resulting framework can be used directly to assess the impact of $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiments on scenarios with light sterile neutrinos and should prove useful in global analyses of sterile-neutrino searches. We perform several phenomenological studies of $0\nu\beta\beta$ in the presence of sterile neutrinos with and without higher-dimensional operators. We find that non-standard interactions involving sterile neutrinos have a dramatic impact on $0\nu\beta\beta$ phenomenology, and next-generation experiments can probe such interactions up to scales of $\mathcal O(100)$ TeV., Comment: 83 pages, 13 figures. We apply a fully automated extension of the $R^*$-operation capable of calculating higher-loop anomalous dimensions of n-point Green's functions of arbitrary, possibly non-renormalisable, local Quantum Field Theories. We focus on the case of the CP-violating Weinberg operator of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory whose anomalous dimension is so far known only at one loop. We calculate the two-loop anomalous dimension in full QCD and the three-loop anomalous dimensions in the limit of pure Yang-Mills theory. We find sizeable two-loop and large three-loop corrections, due to the appearance of a new quartic group invariant. We investigate the interplay between the high- and low-energy phenomenology of $C\!P$-violating interactions of the Higgs boson with gauge bosons. For this purpose we use an effective field theory approach and consider all dimension-6 operators arising in so-called universal theories. We compute their loop-induced contributions to electric dipole moments and the $C\!P$ asymmetry in $B\to X_s\gamma$, and compare the resulting current and prospective constraints to the projected sensitivity of the LHC. Low-energy measurements are shown to generally have a far stronger constraining power, which results in highly correlated allowed regions in coupling space, a distinctive pattern that could be probed at the high-luminosity LHC., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures; journal version

We calculate the electric dipole moment of the nucleon induced by the QCD theta term. We use the gradient flow to define the topological charge and use $N_f = 2+1$ flavors of dynamical quarks corresponding to pion masses of $700$, $570$, and $410$ MeV, and perform an extrapolation to the physical point based on chiral perturbation theory. We perform calculations at $3$ different lattice spacings in the range of $0.07~{\rm fm} < a < 0.11$ fm at a single value of the pion mass, to enable control on discretization effects. We also investigate finite size effects using $2$ different volumes. A novel technique is applied to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in the form factor calculations. The very mild discretization effects observed suggest a continuum-like behavior of the nucleon EDM towards the chiral limit. Under this assumption our results read $d_{n}=-0.00152(71)\ \bar\theta\ e~\text{fm}$ and $d_{p}=0.0011(10)\ \bar\theta\ e~\text{fm}$. Assuming the theta term is the only source of CP violation, the experimental bound on the neutron electric dipole moment limits $\left|\bar\theta\right| < 1.98\times 10^{-10}$ ($90\%$ CL). A first attempt at calculating the nucleon Schiff moment in the continuum resulted in $S_{p} = 0.50(59)\times 10^{-4}\ \bar\theta\ e~\text{fm}^3$ and $S_{n} = -0.10(43)\times 10^{-4}\ \bar\theta\ e~\text{fm}^3$., Comment: Updated version submitted to journal. We investigate the role of leptons in electroweak baryogenesis by studying a relatively simple framework inspired by effective field theory that satisfies all Sakharov conditions. In particular, we study the effectiveness of CP-violating source terms induced by dimension-six Yukawa interactions for quarks and charged leptons. Despite the relatively small Yukawa coupling, CP-violating source terms involving taus are quite effective and can account for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. We obtain analytical and numerical expressions for the total baryon asymmetry, the former providing important insight into what makes lepton CP violation relatively effective compared to quark CP violation. Leptons also play an important role if the CP-violating source involves top quarks. While the tau Yukawa coupling in the Standard Model is small, it significantly enhances the baryon asymmetry by transferring the chiral asymmetry in quarks, which is washed out by strong sphalerons, to a chiral asymmetry in leptons. We conclude that leptons should not be ignored even if CP violation is limited to the quark sector. The role of leptons can be further increased in scenarios of new physics with additional chiral-symmetry-breaking interactions between quarks and leptons, as can happen in models with additional Higgs bosons or leptoquarks. Finally, we study CP-violating dimension-six Yukawa interactions for lighter quarks and leptons but conclude that these lead to too small baryon asymmetries., Comment: 36 pages

In this proceedings, we lay the foundation for computing the contribution of quark chromo-electric dipole moment (qCEDM) operator to the nucleon electric dipole moment. By applying the gradient flow technique, we can parameterize the renormalization and operator mixing issues associated with the qCEDM operator on the lattice. As the nucleon mixing angle $\alpha_N$ is a key component for determining the neutron and proton electric dipole moments induced by the qCEDM operator, we present the formalism and preliminary results for $\alpha_N$ with respect to the gradient flow time $t_f$. The results are computed on $N_f=2+1$ Wilson-clover lattices provided by PACS-CS. The 3 ensembles have lattice spacing values of $a=\lbrace 0.1095,\,0.0936,\,0.0684\rbrace $fm, whilst keeping a similar $m_{\pi}\approx701$MeV, and a fixed box size of $L\approx1.9$fm., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, presented at the 36th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory (Lattice 2018)

The $LQ\bar D$ operator in R-parity-violating supersymmetry can lead to meson decays to light neutralinos and neutralino decays to lighter mesons, with a long lifetime. Since the high-luminosity LHC is expected to accumulate as much as 3/ab of data, several detectors proposed to be built at the LHC may probe unexplored regions in the parameter space, for long-lived neutralinos. We estimate the sensitivity of the recently proposed detectors, CODEX-b, FASER, and MATHUSLA, for detecting such light neutralinos singly produced from $D$- and $B$-meson decays in a list of benchmark scenarios, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed detectors in this context. In the Standard Model, the renormalization of the QCD vacuum angle $\theta$ is extremely tiny, and small $\theta$ is technically natural. In the general Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), however, $\Delta\theta$ is quadratically divergent, reflecting the fact that new sources of hadronic CP-violation typically produce $\mathcal O(1)$ threshold corrections to $\theta$. The observation of such CP-violating interactions would therefore be in tension with solutions to the strong CP problem in which $\theta=0$ is an ultraviolet boundary condition, pointing to the Peccei-Quinn mechanism as the explanation for why $\theta$ is small in the infrared. We study the quadratic divergences in $\theta$ arising from dimension-6 SMEFT operators and discuss the discovery prospects for these operators at electric dipole moment experiments, the LHC, and future proton-proton colliders., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures. Using the gradient flow, we calculated the nucleon mixing angle $\alpha_{N}$ and the nucleon electric dipole moment (EDM) induced by the QCD $\theta$-term. To do so, we computed the topological charge, and the nucleon two-point and three-point correlation functions. The purpose of these proceedings is to explore how the topological charge density interacts with the nucleon interpolation operators. By understanding this relation, we can try to suppress noise contributions to the $\alpha_{N}$ and EDM signals by selecting specific regions where the signal dominates. Using gauge fields provided by PACS-CS at $N_{f}=2+1$, a first collection of ensembles were selected at a fixed lattice spacing $a=0.0907$ fm ($\beta=1.90$), fixed dimensions $32^{3}\times 64$ and varying $m_{\pi}\approx\lbrace 411,\,570,\,701\rbrace$ MeV. We utilize the gradient flow to define and calculate electric dipole moments induced by the strong QCD $\theta$-term and the dimension-6 Weinberg operator. The gradient flow is a promising tool to simplify the renormalization pattern of local operators. The results of the nucleon electric dipole moments are calculated on PACS-CS gauge fields (available from the ILDG) using $N_{f}=2+1$, of discrete size $32^{3}\times 64$ and spacing $a \simeq 0.09$ fm. These gauge fields use a renormalization-group improved gauge action and a non-perturbatively $O(a)$ improved clover quark action at $\beta = 1.90$, with $c_{SW} = 1.715$. We investigate electroweak baryogenesis within the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. The Standard Model Lagrangian is supplemented by dimension-six operators that facilitate a strong first-order electroweak phase transition and provide sufficient CP violation. Two explicit scenarios are studied that are related via the classical equations of motion and are therefore identical at leading order in the effective field theory expansion. We demonstrate that formally higher-order dimension-eight corrections lead to large modifications of the matter-antimatter asymmetry. The effective field theory expansion breaks down in the modified Higgs sector due to the requirement of a first-order phase transition. We investigate the source of the breakdown in detail and show how it is transferred to the CP-violating sector. We briefly discuss possible modifications of the effective field theory framework., Comment: 21 pages + appendices. The interpretation of nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) experiments is clouded by large theoretical uncertainties associated with nonperturbative matrix elements. In various beyond-the-Standard Model scenarios nuclear and diamagnetic atomic EDMs are expected to be dominated by CP-violating pion-nucleon interactions that arise from quark chromo-electric dipole moments. The corresponding CP-violating pion-nucleon coupling strengths are, however, poorly known. In this work we propose a strategy to calculate these couplings by using spectroscopic lattice QCD techniques. Instead of directly calculating the pion-nucleon coupling constants, a challenging task, we use chiral symmetry relations that link the pion-nucleon couplings to nucleon sigma terms and mass splittings that are significantly easier to calculate. In this work, we show that these relations are reliable up to next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion in both SU(2) and SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. We conclude with a brief discussion about practical details regarding the required lattice QCD calculations and the phenomenological impact of an improved understanding of CP-violating matrix elements., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures; v2 version accepted for publication

We calculate the cross-sections for the radiative formation of bound states by dark matter whose interactions are described in the non-relativistic regime by a Yukawa potential. These cross-sections are important for cosmological and phenomenological studies of dark matter with long-range interactions, residing in a hidden sector, as well as for TeV-scale WIMP dark matter. We provide the leading-order contributions to the cross-sections for the dominant capture processes occurring via emission of a vector or a scalar boson. We offer a detailed inspection of their features, including their velocity dependence within and outside the Coulomb regime, and their resonance structure. We study the effective field theory obtained by extending the Standard Model field content with two singlets: a 750 GeV (pseudo-)scalar and a stable fermion. Accounting for collider productions initiated by both gluon and photon fusion, we investigate where the theory is consistent with both the LHC diphoton excess and bounds from Run 1. We analyze dark matter phenomenology in such regions, including relic density constraints as well as collider, direct, and indirect bounds. Scalar portal dark matter models are very close to limits from direct detection and mono-jet searches if gluon fusion dominates, and not constrained at all otherwise. We study the sensitivity of the proposed SHiP experiment to the LQD operator in R-parity violating supersymmetric theories. We focus on single neutralino production via rare meson decays and the observation of downstream neutralino decays into charged mesons inside the SHiP decay chamber. We provide a generic list of effective operators and decay width formulae for any LQD coupling and show the resulting expected SHiP sensitivity for a widespread list of benchmark scenarios via numerical simulations.
