The superconducting tunneling effect in heterostructures, describing the process where single electrons or Cooper pairs tunnel through the barrier, can always play a significant role in understanding the phase coherence and pairing mechanisms in superconductors. Taking advantage of the easy cleavage to atomically-thin monolayer structure of layered superconductors and resulting quantum confinement of electrons or Cooper pairs at two-dimensional limit, van der Waals superconducting materials hosting superconducting order in monolayers or heterostructures can exhibit extensive emergent phenomena associated with quantum phase transitions of vortex and anti-vortex pairs. Examples of superconducting tunnel junctions (STJs) based on layered superconductors have been demonstrated to achieve novel phenomena, including Andreev bound states, Majorana bound states and 0/π-phase junctions. Since the characteristic parameters of quasiparticle tunneling through the barrier are directly associated with the energy gap values of superconductors, such critical parameter can be obtained within the STJ device geometry, which helps us understand and control the pairing states and emerging phenomena in superconductors. In this review, from the perspective of STJs with single electron tunneling and Cooper pair tunneling, we discuss Andreev reflection, Majorana bound states, photon-induced tunneling effects, non-reciprocal transport and superconducting diode phenomena, as well as prospects for layered-superconductor-based STJs. In most naturally occurring superconductors, electrons with opposite spins form Cooper pairs. This includes both conventional s-wave superconductors such as aluminium, as well as high-transition-temperature, d-wave superconductors. Materials with intrinsic p-wave superconductivity, hosting Cooper pairs made of equal-spin electrons, have not been conclusively identified, nor synthesized, despite promising progress1–3. Instead, engineered platforms where s-wave superconductors are brought into contact with magnetic materials have shown convincing signatures of equal-spin pairing4–6. Here we directly measure equal-spin pairing between spin-polarized quantum dots. This pairing is proximity-induced from an s-wave superconductor into a semiconducting nanowire with strong spin–orbit interaction. We demonstrate such pairing by showing that breaking a Cooper pair can result in two electrons with equal spin polarization. Our results demonstrate controllable detection of singlet and triplet pairing between the quantum dots. Achieving such triplet pairing in a sequence of quantum dots will be required for realizing an artificial Kitaev chain7–9.Controllable detection of singlet and triplet Cooper pair splitting via crossed Andreev reflection is demonstrated in spin-polarized quantum dots on a superconducting nanowire platform with strong spin–orbit coupling. Majorana-zero-modes (MZMs) were predicted to exist as edge states of a physical system called the Kitaev chain. MZMs should host particles that are their own antiparticles and could be used as a basis for a qubit which is robust-to-noise. However, all attempts to prove their existence gave inconclusive results. Here, the Kitaev chain is exactly solved with a quantum computing methodology and properties of MZMs are probed by generating eigenstates of the Kitev Hamiltonian on 3 noisy qubits of a publicly available quantum computer. After an ontological elaboration I show that two eigenstates of the Kitaev Hamiltonian exhibit eight signatures attributed to MZMs. The results presented here are a most comprehensive set of validations of MZMs ever conducted in an actual physical system. Furthermore, the findings of this manuscript are easily reproducible for any user of publicly available quantum computers, solving another important problem of research with MZMs—the result reproducibility crisis. Tantalum disulfide (TaS2) two-dimensional film material has attracted wide attention due to its unique optical and electrical properties. In this work, we report the preparation of 1 T-TaS2 quantum dots (1 T-TaS2 QDs) by top-down method. Herein, we prepared the TaS2 QDs having a monodisperse grain size of around 3 nm by an effective ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation method. Optical studies using UV-Vis, PL, and PLE techniques on the as-prepared TaS2 QDs exhibited ultraviolet absorption at 283 nm. Furthermore, we found that dimension reduction of TaS2 has led to a modification of the band gap, namely a transition from indirect to direct band gap, which is explained using first-principle calculations. By using quinine as reference, the fluorescence quantum yield is 45.6%. Therefore, our results suggest TaS2 QDs have unique and extraordinary optical properties. Moreover, the low-cost, facile method of producing high quality TaS2 QDs in this work is ideal for mass production to ensure commercial viability of devices based on this material.
