Current environmental crises call for an integrated knowledge of landscapes and their ecosystems in a broader sense. This article presents a pedagogical framework for cross-disciplinary landscape research at postgraduate level. The framework is grounded in the use of geospatial epistemic discomfort as a creative force to develop and enhance inquiry skills able to cross and merge disciplinary boundaries. Developed within the Erasmus+ KA2 project “CROSSLAND”, the pedagogical framework is based on the scaffolding of epistemic discomfort through four key didactic elements: 1) cross-disciplinary group work and open-ended assignment, 2) in-field inquiry as pre-training on space-time, 3) replacement of traditional lectures by student-led seminars, 4) GIS labs centred on the exploration of cross-disciplinary portfolios of geospatial approaches and methods given as worked-out examples. Main results from the evaluation of the framework implementation in a Summer School show how learning cross-disciplinarity happened thanks to a scaffolding that allowed, first and foremost, the socialisation of different conceptualisations of space. While students felt at ease with geospatial epistemic discomfort, we can conclude that spatial cognitive processes are powerful in improving abilities beyond the spatial domain.

On 29 June 2023, DANS organised the workshop ‘Shaping the World of 3D’ to bring together the community of those working with 3D research data in cultural heritage and/or archaeology in the Netherlands and Flanders. The aim was to establish a roadmap for best practices for management of 3D datasets in these fields to ensure their reuse and long-term preservation. This document summarises the presentations and discussions and presents a preliminary roadmap. The content varies from, for example, the strong recommendation for an internationally accepted common metadata standard to more practical recommendations for preferred file formats. We hope that the workshop and this resulting report can form a basis for a Community of Practice to further refine, but especially to realise, the identified tasks.

Parking is an often-overlooked aspect of sustainable urban planning that links to e.g., management of scarce public space, controlling traffic flows, and increasing road safety. Parking management requires knowing where cars are parked and understanding how this varies over time and space. Current parking monitoring data, however, is scattered across different organisations and incomplete in spatial and temporal coverage. This study aims to inform parking policy makers on the different possibilities to report parking occupancy and the feasibility of using satellite and aerial photography to support such measurements. The study was performed for the city of Alkmaar and makes use of the spatial datasets they have available (e.g., current occupancy rate measurements, parking spot data, annually collected aerial photos) and a specially commissioned satellite image that was funded by the NWO-funded Urban Mobility Observatory (UMO) project.

In this article we study the impact of Romans on the land use in the Lower Rhine by exploring a spatial simulation modelling framework that integrates economic and demographic factors with physical-environmental factors to simulate past land use on a regional level.

Applied historical landscape research often takes place under the umbrella of sustainability issues and sustainability research, but now includes both environmental sustainability and community resilience. This confronts the study of cultural landscapes with new issues and challenges such as how to utilize long-term and more recent perspectives, and to integrate economic, cultural and ecological drivers of landscape change. A key question is how to make landscape studies relevant for both contemporary landscape services and future landscape changes. We propose a new framework for study that combines insights from landscape biography, historical ecology and systems theory. It presents a protocol' for exploratory research with premises and operational principles, and argues for geodesign in connecting environmental issues, heritage practices and question-driven historical analysis. The framework and protocol are based on recent research within the European Community's Seventh Framework project Sustainable Futures for Europe's Heritage in Cultural Landscapes (HERCULES).
