Heterogeneous catalysis is essential to most industrial chemical processes. To achieve a better sustainability of these processes we need highly efficient and highly selective catalysts that are based on earth-abundant materials rather than the more conventional noble metals. Here, we discuss the potential of inorganic materials as catalysts for chemical transformations focusing in particular on the promising transition metal phosphides and sulfides. We describe our recent and current efforts to understand the interfacial chemistry of these materials that governs catalysis, and to tune catalytic reactivity by controlled chemical modification of the material surfaces and by use of interfacial electric fields.

The widespread utilization of plant cellulose fiber-inorganic fillers-synthetic fabric-reinforced laminates is the current trend in the research field. This investigation studies the effect of chemically treated and untreated water hyacinth/pineapple leaf, titanium carbide nanoparticles, Innegra, and carbon fabric reinforcement on the physical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of ultra-violet resistant polyester hybrid composites. The chemically treated and untreated water hyacinth/pineapple leaf fibers were examined from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and found that chemically treated fibers have an excellent interlocking bond with TiC nanoparticles, Innegra, carbon fabric, and polyester matrix. The maximum tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, impact strength, and shore hardness also affirmed good interfacial bonding of fillers and textiles within the matrix as examined from SEM micrographs. The present investigation also determines the forecasting of the approaches and performance of artificial neural network (ANN) to model the material characteristics of fabricated polyester hybrid composite. Furthermore, the ANN model was more accurate and a valuable technique to optimize the material characteristics of the developed polyester hybrid composite.

The reduction of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide yielded stable sols of silver nanoparticles. Their subsequent treatment with cysteamine hydrochloride led to the chemical modification of the surface. Both initial and modified sols were used for the determination of Hg2+ ions in an aqueous medium. The limit of detection for the analyte and the linearity range of the analytical signal for the initial silver sols are lower in comparison with the analogues modified with cysteamine. The review is devoted to the analysis of publications on the synthesis and chemical modification of the surface of silver and gold nanoparticles and their use in chemical and biochemical analysis by spectrometry. The formation and subsequent modification of the chemical composition of the surface layer of nanoparticles ensures the solution of problems of the group and individual determination of analytes, i.e., metal ions and organic and bioorganic compounds. The presence of an accessible well-developed surface bearing functional groups of different nature in combination with the effects of surface plasmon resonance and enhanced and surface-enhanced Raman scattering opens wide prospects for the application of nanoparticles to chemical and biochemical analysis. A natural zeolite of Kazakh origin, as well as its three different types of chemically modified versions, were assessed from the point of view of permanganate removal yield from aqueous solutions. Modification was carried out by means of di-dodecyl-dimethyl-ammonium bromide surfactant treatment type (1). Types (2) and (3) were treated prior to DDAB wth HCl or NaCl, respectively. All sorbents display broad ranges of particle size distribution. Modification of the natural form enhances the specific surface as well as the pore volume, yet influences not in the same way the sorption yield. The process is slow, however, short- and long-term effectiveness are affected by preparation procedures. By coating surfaces with nano-crystalline diamond (NCD) particles, hydrophilicity can be altered via sidechain modifications without affecting surface texture. The present study aimed to assess the impact of NCD hydrophilicity on machined and rough SLA titanium discs on soft tissue integration, using a rodent model simulating submerged healing. Four different titanium discs (machined titanium = M Titanium, NCD-coated hydrophilic machined titanium = M-O-NCD, sand blasted acid etched (SLA Titanium) titanium, and hydrophilic NCD-coated SLA titanium = SLA O-NCD) were inserted in subdermal pockets of 12 Wistar rats. After one and four weeks of healing, the animals were sacrificed. Biopsies were embedded in methyl methacrylate (MMA), and processed for histology. The number of cells located within a region of interest (ROI) of 10 μm around the discs were counted and compared statistically. Signs of inflammation were evaluated descriptively employing immunohistochemistry. At one week, M-O-NCD coated titanium discs showed significantly higher amounts of cells compared to M Titanium, SLA Titanium, and SLA-O-NCD (p < 0.001). At four weeks, significant higher cell counts were noted at SLA-O-NCD surfaces (p < 0.01). Immunohistochemistry revealed decreased inflammatory responses at hydrophilic surfaces. Within the limits of an animal study, M-O-NCD surfaces seem to stimulate cell proliferation in the initial healing phase, whereas SLA-O-NCD surfaces appeared advantageous afterwards. This study presents a comparison of two types of bifunctional structured surface that were made from the same polymer –– an antimicrobial polycation (a synthetic mimic of an antimicrobial peptide, SMAMP) and a protein-repellent polyzwitterion (poly(sulfobetaines), PSB). The first type of bifunctional surface was fabricated by a colloidal lithography (CL) based process where the two polymers were immobilized sequentially onto pre-structured surfaces with a chemical contrast (gold on silicon). This enabled site-selective covalent attachment. The CL materials had a spacing ranging from 200 nm to 2 µm. The second type of structured surface (spacing: 1 – 8.5 µm) was fabricated using a microcontact printing (µCP) process where SMAMP patches were printed onto a PSB network, so that 3D surface features were obtained. The thus obtained materials were studied by quantitative nanomechanical measurements using atomic force microscopy (QNM-AFM). The different architectures led to different local elastic moduli at the polymer-air interface, where the CL surfaces were much stiffer (Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) modulus = 20 ± 0.8 GPa) compared to the structured 3D networks obtained by µCP (DMT modulus = 42 ± 1.1 MPa). The effects of the surface topology and stiffness on the antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, the protein repellency (using fibrinogen), and the compatibility with human gingival mucosal keratinocytes were investigated. The softer 3D µCP surfaces had simultaneous antimicrobial activity, protein repellency, and cell compatibility at all spacings. For the stiffer CL surfaces, quantitative simultaneous antimicrobial activity and protein repellency was not obtained. However, the cell compatibility could be maintained at all spacings. The optimum spacing for the CL materials was in the range of 500 nm–1 µm, with significantly reduced antimicrobial activity at 2 µm spacing. Thus, the soft polymer network obtained by µCP could be more easily optimized than the stiff CL surface, and had a broader topology range of optimal or near-optimal bioactivity.

Owing to excellent mechanical property and biodegradation, magnesium-based alloys have been widely investigated for temporary implants such as cardiovascular stent and bone graft; however, the fast biodegradation in physiological environment and the limited surface biocompatibility hinder their clinical applications. In the present study, magnesium alloy was treated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) solutions, respectively, to produce the chemical conversion layers with the aim of improving the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The results of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the chemical conversion layers of magnesium hydroxide or magnesium fluoride were obtained successfully. Sodium hydroxide treatment can significantly enhance the surface hydrophilicity while hydrogen fluoride treatment improved the surface hydrophobicity. Both the chemical conversion layers can obviously improve the corrosion resistance of the pristine magnesium alloy. Due to the hydrophobicity of magnesium fluoride, HF-treated magnesium alloy showed the relative better corrosion resistance than that of NaOH-treated substrate. According to the results of hemolysis assay and platelet adhesion, the chemical surface modified samples exhibited improved blood compatibility as compared to the pristine magnesium alloy. Furthermore, the chemical surface modified samples improved cytocompatibility to endothelial cells, the cells had better cell adhesion and proliferative profiles on the modified surfaces. Due to the excellent hydrophilicity, the NaOH-treated substrate displayed better blood compatibility and cytocompatibility to endothelial cells than that of HF-treated sample. It was considered that the method of the present study can be used for the surface modification of the magnesium alloy to enhance the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Interest in nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) has increased notably over recent decades. This bio-based nanomaterial has been used essentially in bionanocomposites or in paper thanks to its high mechanical reinforcement ability or barrier property respectively. Its nano-scale dimensions and its capacity to form a strong entangled nanoporous network have encouraged the emergence of new high-value applications. It is worth noting that chemical surface modification of this material can be a key factor to achieve a better compatibility with matrices. In order to increase the compatibility in different matrices or to add new functions, surface chemical modification of NFC appears to be the prior choice to conserve its intrinsic nanofibre properties. In this review, the authors have proposed for the first time an overview of all chemical grafting strategies used to date on nanofibrillated cellulose with focus on surface modification such as physical adsorption, molecular grafting or polymer grafting.

The rigid core of intracellular tau filaments from Alzheimer's disease (AD), Pick's disease (PiD), and Corticobasal disease (CBD) brains has been shown to differ in their cryo-EM atomic structure. Despite providing critical information on the intimate arrangement of a fraction of htau molecule within the fibrillar scaffold, the cryo-EM studies neither yield a complete picture of tau fibrillar assemblies structure nor contribute insights into the surfaces that define their interactions with numerous cellular components. Here, using proteomic approaches such as proteolysis and molecular covalent painting, we mapped the exposed amino acid stretches at the surface and those constituting the fibrillar core of in vitro-assembled fibrils of human htau containing one N-terminal domain and three (1N3R) or four (1N4R) C-terminal microtubule-binding repeat domains as a result of alternative splicing. Using limited proteolysis, we identified the proteolytic fragments composing the molecular "bar-code" for each type of fibril. Our results are in agreement with structural data reported for filamentous tau from AD, PiD, and CBD cases predigested with the protease pronase. Finally, we report two amino acid stretches, exposed to the solvent in 1N4R not in 1N3R htau, which distinguish the surfaces of these two kinds of fibrils. Nowadays, metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been applied in various fields of nanotechnology including catalysis of chemical reactions, drug delivery, water treatment, textile industries, polymer composites, adhesives, and coatings. The greatest challenge in relation to metal oxide NPs is high tendency to aggregation. Chemical surface modification of metal oxide NPs has gained widely interest to control of dispersion and aggregation of NPs. Silane modifiers are one of the most important bifunctional modifiers that are frequently used for surface treatment of metal oxide NPs. In this review paper, we first focus on the synthesis, surface thermodynamic properties, surface modification techniques, and kinetic of silanization reaction of metal oxide NPs. Then, the recent development in using silane modifiers for treatment of metal oxide NPs in various applications were investigated. It was found that the unmodified NPs have high surface energy and are thermodynamically unstable. The thermodynamic properties of NPs including G m s , H m s , and S m s increase with decreasing the particle size. Aggregation phenomena is the simple way to reduce the excess surface energy of NPs that leads to an increase in particle size. Therefore, the chemical surface modification of NPs using silane modifiers can be used as an effective method for the prevention of NPs agglomeration and improvement of NPs stability.
