この研究では、日本の大学が健康教育に焦点をあてた学生サービスシステム (SRS)を導入する可能性について検討する。そのために、ハワイ大学のキャンパスで提供されている様々なプログラム内容の概略を整理し、以下の5つの側面から検討する。すなわち、ウォーリアレクレーションセンターで提供されているフィットネスプログラム、キャンパス内のスポーツ施設で行われている非公式のレクリエーション、学内スポーツ、レクリエーションスポーツ、そしてアウトドア−教育である。そのうえで、学生サービスシステムで現場観察を行ったフィールドワークに基づいて、日米の文化差に関する問題についても検討する。, This study explores a possibility for a Japanese university to introduce a health education focused student service system. For this purpose, the contents of programs provided by Student Recreation Service (SRS) at the University of Hawaii Campus, are outlined and examined in their five aspects, which are Fitness Programs provided at Warrior Rec Center, Informal Recreation played at in-campus sports facility, Intramural Sports, Rec Sports, and Outdoor Education. Some on-site observations through fieldworks conducted at SRS are used to examine issues concerning the cultural differences between U.S. and Japan

Studies have found that there is a positive relationship between the number of student visits to campus recreation and academic outcomes such as rates of graduation and grade point average (Huesman, Brown, Lee, Kellogg, & Radcliffe, 2009). Despite the strong correlation between use of fitness facilities and academic performance some students choose not to visit, while some who use the facilities may not be maximizing such use due to constraints (barriers). The purpose of this study was to understand the constraints to using the campus recreation facility at a midsized New England university. Moreover, this study sought to understand the types of management actions that would help increase use of the recreation center by current users. An online survey was distributed to a random sample ( N = 2,400) of all campus recreation visitors in fall of 2013 using a modified Dillman method of distribution (2009). A total of 882 respondents completed the survey for a response rate of nearly 37%. Important results from this study included that female students were much more likely than male students to report being constrained by not knowing how to use the free weight section safely ( M = 3.40, SD = 1.143; M = 2.68, SD = 1.166, respectively) and that male students suggested that they were more likely to participate than female students ( M = 3.07, SD = 1.182; M = 2.96, SD = 1.235, respectively) at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) if they were not as involved with other activities. This information can be used to guide the expansion planning of future SRC projects and to help improve the participation habits of students at the case institution.

PhD (Recreation Sciences), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus Recreational sport participation is beneficial for university students, increasing physical and social health, reducing stress levels, fostering a better sense of belonging and improving persistence, and identifying factors or constraints that may hinder students from participation is essential. The purpose of this study was to address the influence of different social correlates on undergraduate student recreational sport participation at the Potchefstroom Campus of North-West University. The study data were collected through an online survey. The research instrument consisted of sections on demographics, current recreational sport patterns, reasons for participation, leisure constraints and sense of community. A census sample was used comprising 581 undergraduate students registered as full-time contact students for the academic year. Descriptive statistics were used to establish the students' recreational sport profile, while Chi-square tests and crosstabs analyses were used to determine differences in choice of recreational sport based on demographic variables, with significant differences found according to gender and nationality. Two factor analyses were performed to determine the reasons (motives) for and constraints to participation, with five reasons and five constraints identified. The extracted factors were further used in t-tests and analyses of variance and the results showed significant differences among selected demographic groups in their reasons for participation and perceived constraints. An additional factor analysis determined four factors contributing to students' sense of community. These extracted factors were further used in a Spearman's correlation analysis to determine correlations between recreational sport participation and the factors contributing to sense of community. The study not only contributes to the South African body of knowledge in the field of leisure research, but provides practical information for universities on university students' recreational sport behaviour. The recommendations include the review of recreational sport codes endorsed by the university and their inclusiveness to all members of the student population, as well as a survey of the campus sport infrastructure, focusing on accessibility, quality and relevance. An additional recommendation is a campus initiative for both staff and students to engage in recreational sport to promote a sense of community in a fun and informal way. It is suggested that further research includes the following: translating the research instrument to increase understanding of terms such as leisure and recreation; including more universities for comparison and generalisation of results; and using qualitative research methods to acquire more in-depth knowledge on topics arising from this study. MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014 This mini-dissertation deals with the market demand for campus recreation at the North-West University’s (NWU) Potchefstroom Campus. The market demand refers to the proposed needs for recreation activities on-campus among fulltime undergraduate students studying at the Potchefstroom Campus. For the purpose of the study, undergraduate students (n = 327) were requested to complete a questionnaire containing questions related to reasons for recreational sport participation and constraints hindering participation, as identified by literature. The study was undertaken by using historic, fulltime first- to third-year students studying at the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU. Participants consisted of a diverse group residing both on-campus and off-campus and also from different faculties, with the exclusion of the Faculties of Law and Theology. Data collected by means of questionnaires was organised and analysed by the Statistical Consultation Services of the NWU (Potchefstroom Campus). Descriptive statistics were used to determine frequencies. It was found that the majority of students participate in the seven major sport codes of the university, and in particular hockey and soccer, followed by tennis and athletics. Even though participation figures for rugby are lower than those for the other seven major sport codes, the participation frequencies by the students are the highest of the major sport codes. The highest additional sport codes that students participated in are cycling, squash, golf, swimming and table tennis. The additional sport codes are predominantly participated in either through hostel teams or with private clubs. It was found that there are five main reasons why students participate in recreational sport, namely for the purpose of challenge and enjoyment, for recognition and achievement, to socialise, for health and physical wellness and to relieve stress. From the mean scores, it appears that the students’ primary reasons for participating in recreational sports are recognition and achievement and to a lesser degree for health and wellness. The study found participation constraints, namely lack of knowledge, lack of interest, individual psychological aspects and accessibility or financial constraints. The constraint experienced most by the students, according to the mean scores, is lack of knowledge about recreational sport. Regarding the students’ recreational sport needs, hockey was mentioned the most, followed by netball, cycling, swimming, tennis and squash. Students prefer to participate in the above mentioned recreational sport activities with hostel teams, whereas very few students prefer to participate on their own. The first recommendation would be to include student development, health and wellness as key components in the current vision of NWU sport. It is also recommended that the NWU revise the information obtained from the Marketing Department regarding the recruitment of future students. Valuable knowledge could be obtained regarding which sports the students were exposed to during their school years and to adjust the additional sport codes accordingly. The third recommendation is the introduction of leisure education during the orientation programme for first-year students. Leisure education will provide the students with the skills to prepare for future events peculiar to campus life. Fourthly it is recommended that, due to the increase in demand for multi-gender sport, the university shall focus on marketing and public awareness of sports such as women’s cricket and rugby for women. The last recommendation refers to the need for more information regarding the management of facilities and grounds. The implementation of a web-based system could increase productivity and may decrease the pressure placed on the utilisation of facilities and grounds. Masters

The purpose of this study was to investigate the job constructs influencing campus recreation undergraduate student workers' satisfaction and retention and how their job satisfaction relates to job retention. The job constructs measured against job satisfaction and retention were job embeddedness, perceived organizational support, perceived organizational prestige, and organizational commitment. An online survey was sent out for 14, four-year, public universities in two southeastern states. A total of 108 undergraduate student employees responded to the survey. Descriptive statistics and a correlation matrix were performed in order to analyze the data and the relationship between the variables. Three regressions were used to measure the significance of the variables relationship. This study's results suggest that those students who are more committed to the organization are more likely to be satisfied with their job. Additionally, those students who are more embedded in their job are more likely to return to their job.

The importance and growth of campus recreation is being felt by leaders throughout the country. Daniels (2, p. 38) summarizes the importance of the total organism in modern education as follows: "Ample justification for a consideration of, the problem of recreation may be found in the latest and most authoritative literature in the field of educat1on, as well as in a direct study of conditions found on many college campuses throughout the country. Rooted firmly in the philosophy of modern educatlon is the thought that the total organism must be given the opportunity for experiences of an all-round nature, with these experiences based on the social and biological needs which enable an individual to live most successfully in relation to his particular social group." Acceptance of this philosophy implies the responsibility of devising ways and means whereby campus recreation purposes may be achieved. By no manner of reasoning can such purposes be realized without due consideration of, and provision for, opportunities in a wide range of recreational activities, such as crafts, music, nature, dramatics, sports, and games. Furthermore, these opportunities must be made available to all students and not merely the most talented and highly trained.
