OBJECTIVE: Most evidence supporting screening for undernutrition is for children aged 6-59 months. However, the highest risk of mortality and highest incidence of wasting occurs in the first 6 months of life. We evaluated relationships between neonatal anthropometric indicators, including birth weight, weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), weight-for-length Z-score (WLZ), length-for-age Z-score (LAZ) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and mortality and growth at 6 months of age among infants in Burkina Faso. DESIGN: Data arose from a randomised controlled trial evaluating neonatal azithromycin administration for the prevention of child mortality. We evaluated relationships between baseline anthropometric measures and mortality, wasting (WLZ < -2), stunting (LAZ < -2) and underweight (WAZ < -2) at 6 months of age were estimated using logistic regression models adjusted for the childs age and sex. Human milk (HM) contains macronutrients, micronutrients, and a multitude of other bioactive factors, which can have a long-term impact on infant growth and development. We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science to synthesize evidence published between 1980 and 2022 on HM components and anthropometry through 2 y of age among term-born infants. From 9992 abstracts screened, 141 articles were included and categorized based on their reporting of HM micronutrients, macronutrients, or bioactive components. Bioactives including hormones, HM oligosaccharides (HMOs), and immunomodulatory components are reported here, based on 75 articles from 69 unique studies reporting observations from 9980 dyads. Research designs, milk collection strategies, sampling times, geographic and socioeconomic settings, reporting practices, and outcomes varied considerably. Meta-analyses were not possible because data collection times and reporting were inconsistent among the studies included. Few measured infant HM intake, adjusted for confounders, precisely captured breastfeeding exclusivity, or adequately described HM collection protocols. Only 5 studies (6%) had high overall quality scores. Hormones were the most extensively examined bioactive with 46 articles (n = 6773 dyads), compared with 13 (n = 2640 dyads) for HMOs and 12 (n = 1422 dyads) for immunomodulatory components. Two studies conducted untargeted metabolomics. Leptin and adiponectin demonstrated inverse associations with infant growth, although several studies found no associations. No consistent associations were found between individual HMOs and infant growth outcomes. Among immunomodulatory components in HM, IL-6 demonstrated inverse relationships with infant growth. Current research on HM bioactives is largely inconclusive and is insufficient to address the complex composition of HM. Future research should ideally capture HM intake, use biologically relevant anthropometrics, and integrate components across categories, embracing a systems biology approach to better understand how HM components work independently and synergistically to influence infant growth.

Human milk (HM) provides a plethora of nutritional and non-nutritional compounds that support infant development. For many compounds, concentrations vary substantially among mothers and across lactation, and their impact on infant growth is poorly understood. We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science to synthesize evidence published between 1980 and 2022 on HM components and anthropometry through 2 y of age among term-born infants. Outcomes included weight-for-length, length-for-age, weight-for-age, body mass index (in kg/m2)-for-age, and growth velocity. From 9992 abstracts screened, 144 articles were included and categorized based on their reporting of HM micronutrients, macronutrients, or bioactive components. Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are reported here, based on 28 articles involving 2526 mother-infant dyads. Studies varied markedly in their designs, sampling times, geographic and socioeconomic settings, reporting practices, and the HM analytes and infant anthropometrics measured. Meta-analysis was not possible because data were sparse for most micronutrients. The most-studied minerals were zinc (15 articles, 1423 dyads) and calcium (7 articles, 714 dyads). HM iodine, manganese, calcium, and zinc concentrations were positively associated with several outcomes (each in ≥2 studies), whereas magnesium (in a single study) was negatively associated with linear growth during early lactation. However, few studies measured HM intake, adjusted for confounders, provided adequate information about complementary and formula feeding, or adequately described HM collection protocols. Only 4 studies (17%) had high overall quality scores. The biological functions of individual HM micronutrients are likely influenced by other HM components; yet, only 1 study analyzed data from multiple micronutrients simultaneously, and few addressed other HM components. Thus, available evidence on this topic is largely inconclusive and fails to address the complex composition of HM. High-quality research employing chronobiology and systems biology approaches is required to understand how HM components work independently and together to influence infant growth and to identify new avenues for future maternal, newborn, or infant nutritional interventions.

Among exclusively breastfed infants, human milk (HM) provides complete nutrition in the first mo of life and remains an important energy source as long as breastfeeding continues. Consisting of digestible carbohydrates, proteins, and amino acids, as well as fats and fatty acids, macronutrients in human milk have been well studied; however, many aspects related to their relationship to growth in early life are still not well understood. We systematically searched Medline, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science to synthesize evidence published between 1980 and 2022 on HM components and anthropometry through 2 y of age among term-born healthy infants. From 9992 abstracts screened, 57 articles reporting observations from 5979 dyads were included and categorized based on their reporting of HM macronutrients and infant growth. There was substantial heterogeneity in anthropometric outcome measurement, milk collection timelines, and HM sampling strategies; thus, meta-analysis was not possible. In general, digestible carbohydrates were positively associated with infant weight outcomes. Protein was positively associated with infant length, but no associations were reported for infant weight. Finally, HM fat was not consistently associated with any infant growth metrics, though various associations were reported in single studies. Fatty acid intakes were generally positively associated with head circumference, except for docosahexaenoic acid. Our synthesis of the literature was limited by differences in milk collection strategies, heterogeneity in anthropometric outcomes and analytical methodologies, and by insufficient reporting of results. Moving forward, HM researchers should accurately record and account for breastfeeding exclusivity, use consistent sampling protocols that account for the temporal variation in HM macronutrients, and use reliable, sensitive, and accurate techniques for HM macronutrient analysis.

Background: White tea, derived from the Camellia sinensis plant like other teas, uses tender buds and young leaves and undergoes minimal processing. This results in higher levels of antioxidants and bioactive substances, which may enhance thermogenesis more effectively than other teas. This first human study aimed to investigate the acute effects of white tea consumption on resting energy expenditure (REE) and some vital signs, including blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and body temperature (BT). Methods: Thirty-two healthy female volunteers with normal initial BP and whose caffeine intakes were < 300 mg/d were enrolled in the study. The caffeine and total phenolic content of white tea samples were determined by the high-performance liquid chromatography method and the Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method, respectively. After baseline measurements, participants consumed white tea containing 6 mg of caffeine per kilogram of lean body mass, and the white tea was prepared with bottled drinking water at 80 °C and brewed for 3 min. REE, BP, and BT were assessed at various intervals (baseline, 30 min, 120 min, and 180 min) post-consumption of the white tea. Results: The results revealed a significant increase in REE by 8.7% at 180 min after the consumption. In particular, there was a substantial difference in both values between the intervals of 30 min to 180 min and baseline to 180 min for REE (p < 0.05). Maximal oxygen consumption and BT also increased significantly over time (p < 0.05) and the observed increment in BT suggests a thermogenic effect associated with white tea consumption. However, systolic BP, diastolic BP, and heart rate showed no significant difference. Conclusions: These findings suggest white tea consumption may acutely enhance REE and maximal oxygen consumption, so the results are promising for body weight management. Objectives. To evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of measurements obtained using the Bellus3D Face Application on a mobile smartphone by comparing them to direct measurements on pre-marked and blank face scans. Materials and Methods. Twenty-five healthy young adults (six males and nineteen females; age range 20–30 years) were included in this prospective cross-sectional study, with the only exclusion criterion being the presence of significant facial hair interfering with the placement and visualization of landmarks. Image acquisitions were performed using an iPhone XR with the Bellus3D FaceApp face scanning application, an iOS application for smartphones. Ten single midfacial and five paired bilateral landmarks were defined and marked. Two face scans were performed on each patient, both on blank and marked faces, and distances were measured directly with calipers and digitally. Results. The random error values were 1.0 mm and 0.4 mm for the manual point placement and measurements and virtual point placement on blank faces, respectively. The two methods used (the direct method and acquisition on faces with landmarks) demonstrate relatively similar reliability (ICC > 0.8); however, a paired t-test showed that the differences between several measurements were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Regardless of the method used, there was a systematic error for various values that included the nose and mouth (p < 0.05). The measurements demonstrating the most significant differences between the methods were those that included the tip of the nose, with the mean differences being −4.4–3.3 mm. The measurements of the distances that estimate face "depth" showed the greatest consistency irrespective of the tested method (p > 0.05 and ICC > 0.8). Conclusions. The use of the Bellus3D FaceApp is precise and reproducible for certain areas of the face, but digital reconstruction errors prohibit, for the time being, the use of this technology in everyday clinical practice. The noted discrepancies were consistent and more prevalent for specific areas such as the tip of the nose. Background: Malnutrition and improper nutrition may lead to physical and mental growth disorder and cognitive function. This study aims to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and its relationship with educational status among primary school children in Zahedan, Iran. Methods: During a cross-sectional study with a multi-stage random sampling method of 780 boy and girl students, first, second, and third grades of elementary school were included to study. Demographic and anthropometric of students were collected based on the sample size. Malnutrition was assessed according to World Health Organization indicators for the relevant age group. This assessment was based on body mass index (BMI) for age, height for age, and weight for age. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition was severe wasting, wasting, overweight, and obesity which were 0.8, 4.6, 6.4, and 5%, and severe underweight and underweight which were 0.9 and 4.7%, respectively. Severe stunting and stunting were observed in 0.3 and 2.8%, respectively. A statistically significant relationship was found between BMI for age, height for age and weight for age and educational status (P<0.05). Moreover, the educational status of students showed a statistically significant relationship with first and second-grade gender, birth rank, and Parent's job and education (P<0.0001). Conclusion: Different forms of malnutrition among the students can negatively affect their performance, especially their educational status. Therefore, proper nutrition and increasing nutritional knowledge of primary school children and parents may help to prevent the problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breast volume is crucial for ensuring proper bra fit and comfort, significantly influencing women's physiological and psychological well-being. This study aims to develop a novel method for breast-volume self-measurement, allowing women to accurately assess their breast volume without specialized equipment. We employed a geometric approximation of the breast as a combination of a partial elliptical cone and an irregular partial ellipsoid, leading to the formulation of a new volume equation. The method was validated against established standards, including the specimen drainage method and 3D scanning techniques. The findings revealed that our self-measurement approach achieved a relative error of only 3.8%, outperforming the 4.8% of 3D scanning and the 86.3% associated with traditional breast-volume equations. This innovative self-measurement technique enhances accuracy and serves as a practical solution for health and nutritional assessments, alongside body image evaluations. Objectives In the clinical routine of pediatricians, height is the most reliable indicator for assessing growth. However, there are situations where it is not possible to measure this parameter directly, making the estimation of height or length a useful alternative. The main goal of this study is to identify which segmental measure, including upper arm length (UAL), tibial length (TL), and knee-heel length (KHL), provides the stature estimate that most closely approximates directly measured height in the study participants. Methods Analytical cross-sectional study of the anthropometric and segmental measures of 248 participants, aged 0 to 14 years old, using Stevenson's and Kihara's equations to estimate indirectly measured height. Results The segmental measure that provided a measurement that deviated the least from the actual height was the KHL, followed by TL, both calculated using Stevenson's equations. Conclusion The use of segmental measures to infer a child's stature is valuable in clinical practice, particularly in bedridden and incapacitated patients. Background: This study evaluates the clinical evidence for performing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) without a tourniquet, a shift from the near-universal use in 2009 to current trends towards tourniquet-less TKA in Norway and Sweden. This change is set against a backdrop of conflicting evidence regarding the positive and negative effects of tourniquet use. Questions/purposes: The aims were to determine if the tourniquet has an impact on [1] Forgotten Joint Score-12 (FJS-12) at 8 weeks after surgery; [2] postoperative strength and function; [3] postoperative pain and opioid analgesic use; and [4] operative time, bleeding, and length of stay (LOS). Methods: Eighty-one patients were randomised to TKA with or without a tourniquet. The outcome measures, FJS-12, muscle strength, functional test, pain, estimated blood loss, haemoglobin (Hb) loss, knee circumference, opioid consumption, and LOS were assessed preoperatively and at 1 day, 8 weeks, and 1 year after surgery. Results: No significant difference in FJS-12 scores was found between the two groups at postoperative 8 weeks. However, the tourniquet group showed statistically significant better knee extension strength at 8 weeks (p = 0.045). There were no differences in other outcomes, except for a greater decrease in haemoglobin levels (p = 0.02) and higher estimated perioperative blood loss (p < 0.001) in the no tourniquet group than the torniquet group. Conclusions: Our study indicates that tourniquet use during TKA causes no significant differences in FJS-12 at 8 weeks, significantly reduces bleeding and postoperative Hb loss, and improves quadriceps strength at 8 weeks. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most significant public health issues worldwide, which increases the risk of various diseases. Epidemiological evidence suggests that newer anthropometric measures, such as a body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI) can be used to predict MetS. However, anthropometric measures to predict the risk for MetS should be clarified in each population. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between ABSI, BRI, and MetS risk factors among overweight and obese Iranian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 347 overweight and obese individuals [body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m2] aged 20–50 years in Tabriz, Iran. Anthropometric measures were assessed, including BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Additionally, ABSI and BRI were calculated based on the collected data. Blood pressure was measured using standard protocols. Body composition also was measured using body impedance analysis (BIA). Enzymatic-colorimetric methods were used to assess serum glucose and lipids, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were used to measure insulin levels. Results: Participants with higher ABSI exhibited significantly higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) (P = 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P = 0.010), and triglyceride (TG) levels (P < 0.001), along with significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (P < 0.001). In the crude model, individuals in the highest ABSI tertile (tertile 3) had a higher likelihood of having higher SBP (OR: 1.032; 95% CI: 1.014–1.051) and DBP (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.009–1.058), as well as a significant association with lower HDL-C levels (OR: 0.945; 95% CI: 0.918–0.973). Additionally, both ABSI tertile 2 (OR: 1.005; 95% CI: 1.001–1.008) and tertile 3 (OR: 0.993; 95% CI: 1.003–1.011) were linked to a higher likelihood of having higher TG levels. No significant associations were found between BRI tertiles and MetS risk factors. Conclusion: According to our results, ABSI and BRI are poor predictors of MetS risk variables, in overweight and obese individuals. High ABSI is only slightly linked with high SBP, DBP, and TG and low HDL-C. However, longitudinal and long-term investigations are encouraged to verify the efficacy of these two measures. Background: Research on the relationship between dietary phytochemical intake and the anthropometric indices as well as the diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remains inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the associations of dietary phytochemical index (DPI) with the novel anthropometric indices and the severity of DFUs. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 339 adults with type 2 diabetes. Dietary intake was assessed using three 24-hour dietary recalls. To quantify the phytochemical content of the diet, the DPI estimation was done through an equation proposed by McCarty. The International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) criteria and Wagner classification system were applied to assess DFUs. New anthropometric indices including a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI) and abdominal volume index (AVI) were calculated based on formulas. We employed analysis of variance (ANOVA), analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and logistic regression to explore associations between DPI and the anthropometric indices and DFU variables. Results: Our results revealed no significant association between DPI and the foot ulcer indices, following adjusting for the possible covariates. Furthermore, we also examined the relationship between diabetic neuropathy, as measured by monofilament score, and the DPI. Similarly, we did not find any substantial relationship between the DPI and monofilament score (OR: 1.18; 95% CI: 0.66–2.09; Ptrend = 0.56), as well as biochemical indices. Our analysis did not reveal any significant associations between the DPI and ABSI (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.35–1.38; Ptrend = 0.30), BRI (OR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.33–1.95; Ptrend = 0.59), and AVI (OR: 1.99; 95% CI: 0.92–4.33; Ptrend = 0.08). Conclusions: Our study revealed no significant links between the DPI and foot ulcer indices, neuropathy measures, and anthropometric indices. Background: It is unclear how rising obesity among people with HIV (PWH) impacts their risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (diabetes). We examined associations between HIV, prevalent diabetes and adiposity among South African PWH and their peers without HIV (PWOH). Methods: HIV status was ascertained by antibody testing. Diabetes was defined as current use of oral hypoglycemics, insulin, and/or HbA1c ≥6.5%. Adiposity was measured by body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio. Their associations were examined using sex-stratified multivariable fractional polynomial generalized linear models, reporting adjusted prevalence and prevalence ratios (adjPR). Results: The mean age among 1,254 PWH and 4,381 PWOH was 41 years (95%CI 28, 56). The prevalence of diabetes among males was similar between PWH [11.3% (7.1, 15.5)] and PWOH [9.8% (8.5, 11.1); p=0.740]. By contrast, diabetes prevalence was higher among female PWOH [15.7% (14.4, 17.0)] than female PWH [10.5 (8.3, 12.8)%; adjPR: 0.67 (0.51, 0.82); p<0.001]. This difference was accentuated with obesity but reversed with leanness. At BMI ≥25 kg/m2, female PWH had lower diabetes prevalence [adjPR: 0.58 (0.41, 0.76); p<0.001] than female PHIV. In contrast, at BMI <18 kg/m2, female PWH had higher prevalence [adjPR: 1.72 (−1.53, 4.96); p=0.756] than female PWOH. Conclusion: We found sex-specific differences in the relationship between adiposity and diabetes prevalence by HIV serostatus in South Africa. Notably, females living with obesity and HIV had lower prevalence of diabetes than females living with obesity and without HIV, which may have particular implications for diabetes prevention programs in the region. Background: Sarcopenia is a common condition in women with breast cancer, however still presents limitations for an effective diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement and diagnostic accuracy of an anthropometric equation in diagnosing sarcopenia in women with breast cancer based on different constructs. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out with women with breast cancer aged ≥ 20 years. Sarcopenia was identified according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) criteria. Muscle strength was obtained by the handgrip strength test (HGS) and muscle mass (MM) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and by the anthropometric predictive equation. For the diagnosis of sarcopenia, eight constructs were proposed based on the MM assessment method (equation or DXA) and different cutoff points. Agreement analyses using Cohen's Kappa test and diagnostic performance measures were performed. The significance level for all tests was 5%. Results: A total of 122 women, with a mean age of 55.3 ± 11.4 years, were evaluated. There was a predominance of brown participants (50.8%), insufficiently active (57.4%), with diagnosis time ≤ 3 months (54.1%), and with invasive breast carcinoma (69.7%). The prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 3.3 to 8.2%, depending on the construct used. The constructs determined from the cutoff points < 16.0 kg/< 7.58 m² and < 23.0 kg/< 7.58 m² were the ones that showed the best ability to detect sarcopenia. Conclusion: The anthropometric equation showed sufficient diagnostic capacity to be used as an alternative in identifying sarcopenia in women with breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Insulin resistance (IR) is an important risk factor for obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, and our previous findings have demonstrated that visceral fat area to skeletal muscle mass ratio (VSR) is significantly and positively associated with the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between VSR and multiorgan IR, provide a new approach to improve body composition, and set the basis for VSR to increase the incidence of cardiometabolic diseases. Materials and Methods: The study included 398 patients who underwent anthropometric and biochemical measurements, and body composition assessment. Spearman correlation analysis was used to investigate the correlation between VSR and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) as well as multiorgan IR, including homeostasis model assessment adiponectin (HOMA‐AD), adipose tissue insulin resistance (ADIPO‐IR), and hepatic insulin sensitivity (HISI). The new model that incorporated into the present study is made up of easily measured biochemical indicators and is used to predict IR. Logistic regression was used to analyze the odds ratio (OR) of VSR on the risk of multiorgan IR. The predictive value of VSR for HOMA‐IR and new model was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: VSR was significantly associated with HOMA‐IR, HOMA‐AD, ADIPO‐IR, 1/HISI, and new model (p < 0.001). With the increase of VSR, the OR increased significantly for HOMA‐IR and new model (p < 0.001). Then, multiorgan IR indicators were quantified, compared to the lowest quartile group, and increased VSR exacerbated the risk of IR in the highest quartile (ptrend < 0.001). The area under the curve for predicting IR using VSR for HOMA‐IR and new model was 0.88 for men, 0.85 for women and 0.73 for men, 0.76 for women, respectively. Conclusions: There was significant correlation between VSR and multiorgan IR, and the risk of multiorgan IR increased with increasing VSR. Accurate assessment of body composition is essential for evaluating the risk of chronic disease. 3D body shape, obtainable using smartphones, correlates strongly with body composition. We present a novel method that fits a 3D body mesh to a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) silhouette (emulating a single photograph) paired with anthropometric traits, and apply it to the multi-phase Fenland study comprising 12,435 adults. Using baseline data, we derive models predicting total and regional body composition metrics from these meshes. In Fenland follow-up data, all metrics were predicted with high correlations (r > 0.86). We also evaluate a smartphone app which reconstructs a 3D mesh from phone images to predict body composition metrics; this analysis also showed strong correlations (r > 0.84) for all metrics. The 3D body shape approach is a valid alternative to medical imaging that could offer accessible health parameters for monitoring the efficacy of lifestyle intervention programmes. Introduction: Hip fracture is particularly seen in elderly patients with frailty and osteoporosis and leads to diminished functional independence and quality of life. Despite the susceptibility of these patients to a second hip fracture (SHF), the literature insufficiently discussed its impact leading to poor outcomes. This study aims to directly assess the outcomes of elderly patients with initial hip fractures (IHF) vs those experiencing an SHF within a well-matched group with similar characteristics. Materials and Methods: This case–control study gathered data from the clinical hip fracture registry at a medical center from 2019 to 2022. Patients with SHF were matched with those with IHF in a 1:2 ratio according to the similarity of age, sex, and Charlson Comorbidity Index classification. Demographics at admission, baseline characteristics, and 1-year postoperative outcome were compared between the SHF and IHF groups. Results: Thirty-two SHF patients were matched with 64 IHF patients (81.25% of women, median age of 86 years). Anthropometric measurements and socioeconomic factors were not significantly different between the two groups. No differences in baseline characteristics were observed, except IHF patients had a significantly lower T-score than SHF patients (−3.98 vs. −3.31, P = 0.016). At one-year follow-up, despite a notable decrease in Barthel Index scores and an uptick in EQ-5D measures among the patients, the IHF and SHF groups demonstrated similar quality of life and a high level of activities of daily living. Discussions: In this case-control study, after matching for age, sex, and comorbidities, an SHF did not indicate poorer outcomes than an IHF, providing a more optimistic outlook for the patients and healthcare providers. Conclusion: Despite the significant challenges presented by hip fracture, the one-year postoperative outcomes did not differ between IHF and SHF patients, suggesting that SHF is not an independent predictor of poor outcomes following hip fracture in the elderly population. Background: Bovine colostrum (BC) with liposomal delivery system (LDS) is a promising supplement to premature infant formula in absence of mother own milk. We propose that BC with LDS can target multiple etiological factors that threaten the developing retina, making premature infant less liable for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of BC with LDS in the prevention of ROP. Methods: This was a single center, randomized, controlled trial. Two hundred and eleven preterm infants of gestational age ≤ 32weeks were admitted to the NICU of Alexandria University Children Hospital, Egypt, and randomly allocated into either non-BC group (n = 105) or BC group (n = 106). Patients in BC group received 3.5 ml /kg/day of BC for 14 days. All patients were monitored for development of ROP, anemia, late onset sepsis (LOS), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), in addition to growth assessment. Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors predicting ROP development. Results: Compared with the non-BC group, BC group was associated with a significantly lower incidence of ROP (5/100 vs. 16/100, respectively) with a p-value of 0.033. The administration of BC significantly decreased serum C- reactive protein (CRP) level and increased weight on day-14 of the study in comparison with the CRP level and birthweight at the beginning of study, with Cohen's D= -0.184, D = -2.246, respectively. Patients with suspected sepsis were significantly less in BC than non-BC group, p = 0.004. Patients with BC had significantly higher hemoglobin level on day-14 than non-BC-group, with median (IQR) 12.2 (11.0–13.9) and 11.7 (10.5–12.9), respectively. BC intake is one of factors that decreased development of ROP in univariate analysis. Nevertheless, weight gain and birth weight were the most significant factors affecting ROP development in multivariate-regression model. Conclusion: BC may reduce the incidence of ROP in preterm neonates aged ≤ 32 weeks. This might be due to keeping better Hb level and growth rate, as well as anti-inflammatory properties through its ability to decrease CRP level. Accurate sex estimation is crucial for comprehensive analysis of the biological profiles of unidentified human skeletal remains. However, there is a notable lack of research specifically addressing the morphometrics of the hard palate. Therefore, this study aimed to derive discriminant equations using the hard palate and assess their applicability for sexing partial skeletal remains in a contemporary Korean population. Statistical analyses were performed for 24 measurements derived from three-dimensional models of the hard palate, generated using computed tomography scans of 301 individuals (156 males, 145 females). Descriptive statistics revealed significant sexual dimorphism in the mean comparison of hard palate sizes between Korean males and females, with males exhibiting larger palates across all measurements (p < 0.05). Discriminant function score equations were generated to aid in sex determination. Univariate analysis yielded an accuracy range of 57.8–75.1%, whereas the stepwise method achieved an accuracy of 80.7% with five selected variables: IF-PNS, GFL-GFR, IF-GFR, Pr-EcL, and Pr-EnR. The results of this metric analysis demonstrate the usefulness of the hard palate for sex estimation in the contemporary Korean population. Modern-day terrestrial amphibians pale in comparison to their monstrous ancient relatives, the Late Carboniferous and Early Permian trematopid temnospondyls. With a skeleton that clearly indicated a terrestrial mode of life and armed with an impressive set of large, recurved marginal dentition and palatal fangs for holding their prey—this group of terrestrial temnospondyls roamed North America and Central Europe as a top predator. Lack of substantial informative fossil material has previously limited our understanding of trematopid diversity and ontogeny. Fortunately, this has improved in the last few decades with the help of exceptional localities like the Early Permian locality Richards Spur. While multiple species of dissorophid temnospondyl have been described from Richards Spur, only one trematopid species has been confidently recognized -Acheloma dunni. Here, we report on the presence of a new large, relatively mature trematopid skull from this famous locality, found encased within a limestone rich block composed mostly of skeletal remains from several other taxa. With the help of neutron computed tomography (nCT), a non-invasive method of analyzing internal and external morphologies, this specimen has revealed several features consistent with the genus, Acheloma, but distinct from Acheloma cumminsi and Acehloma dunni. The identification of these new features, in addition to the characters it shares with other Acheloma species, not only constitute it as a new species of this genus, but also challenges the notion of having synonymized Acheloma dunni with Acheloma cumminsi. In this study, we also unveil new anatomical characters that are potentially independent of ontogeny and could therefore help clarify some of the phylogenetic relationships of this fascinating group of Paleozoic terrestrial predators. Simple Summary: Patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) have a high prevalence of malnutrition, which is associated with a decrease in overall survival. In this study, we analyzed body composition using techniques such as BIVA, NU, HGS, and CT in a population with CRC and overweight and found that there is a high prevalence of sarcopenia in these patients. Early detection and treatment of sarcopenia will be essential to improving the prognosis of these patients. (1) Background: Accurate body composition assessment in CCR patients is crucial due to the high prevalence of malnutrition, sarcopenia, and cachexia affecting survival. This study evaluates the correlation between body composition assessed by CT imaging as a reference technique, BIVA, nutritional ultrasound, and handgrip strength in CCR patients. (2) Methods: This retrospective study included CCR patients assessed by the Endocrinology and Nutrition Services of Virgen de la Victoria in Malaga and Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona from October 2018 to July 2023. Assessments included anthropometry, BIVA, NU, HGS, and AI-assisted CT analysis at the L3 level for body composition. Pearson's analysis determined the correlation of CT-derived variables with BIVA, NU, and HGS. (3) Results: A total of 267 CCR patients (mean age 68.2 ± 10.9 years, 61.8% men) were studied. Significant gender differences were found in body composition and strength. CT-SMI showed strong correlations with body cell mass (r = 0.65), rectus femoris cross-sectional area (r = 0.56), and handgrip strength (r = 0.55), with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.789. CT-based adipose tissue measurements showed significant correlations with fat mass (r = 0.56), BMI (r = 0.78), A-SAT (r = 0.49), and L-SAT (r = 0.66). Regression analysis indicated a high predictive power for CT-SMI, explaining approximately 80% of its variance (R2 = 0.796). (4) Conclusions: Comprehensive screening of colorectal cancer patients through BIVA, NU, HGS, and CT optimizes the results of the evaluation. These methods complement each other in assessing muscle mass, fat distribution, and nutritional status in CCR. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of anthropometric measurements for two-stranded peroneus longus tendon (PLT) graft thickness using ultrasonography Materials and methods: A prospective study was conducted on 204 healthy volunteers (102 males and 102 females) aged 18–40 years. Anthropometric measurements were recorded, including height, weight, body mass index (BMI), fibular length, calf circumference, and ankle circumference. The Tegner Activity Scale (TAS) was used to assess activity levels. PLT cross-sectional area (CSA) was measured using ultrasonography. Two-stranded PLT graft thickness was calculated using the previously reported formula by Luo et al. A thickness of less than 8 mm of PLT graft was accepted as an insufficient autograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Correlation and regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of two-stranded PLT graft thickness. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to establish the best threshold values. Results: Males had a significantly greater PLT CSA (0.17 ± 0.03 cm2) and predicted two-stranded PLT graft thickness (8.1 ± 0.6 mm) compared with females (0.15 ± 0.03 cm2 and 7.5 ± 0.6 mm, respectively; p < 0.001 for both). Correlation analysis revealed that two-stranded PLT graft thickness positively correlated with height, weight, BMI, fibular length, calf circumference, ankle circumference, and Tegner Activity Scale in both genders, with stronger correlations observed in females. The logistic regression model identified height and calf circumference as significant predictors of sufficient two-stranded PLT graft thickness (≥ 8 mm) in males, while calf circumference and the TAS were significant predictors in females. ROC analysis demonstrated that calf circumference and the TAS had acceptable discriminatory abilities in females, with 36.25 cm and ≥ 4 cutoff points, respectively. However, no anthropometric variables in males exhibited strong discriminatory abilities for predicting two-stranded PLT graft thickness Conclusions: Calf circumference and the TAS are significant predictors for two-stranded PLT autograft thickness in females. However, no anthropometric variables in males could be used strongly for prediction. These anthropometric measurements can assist in preoperative planning and decision-making, potentially improving ACLR outcomes by ensuring adequate graft thickness in females. Statement of the Problem: When replacing the maxillary central incisor (MCI) or adjusting its dimensions, Syrian dentists may have difficulties in selecting the appropriate size due to the lack of a dental anthropometric database for Syrian society. Purpose: The purpose of this observational study was to investigate the correlation between MCI dimensions and face length and width in Syrian females and males. Materials and Methods: The study included 180 Syrian participants (90 females and 90 males) without facial or dental defects and aged between 20 and 25 years. A digital photograph of each individual's face was taken to measure face length and width. Maxillary stone casts were made for each individual to assess the MCI width and height using a digital caliper. The correlation between facial and dental variables was investigated with the Pearson correlation coefficient. Moreover, intersex variations were tested using an independent‐sample t‐test (p < 0.05 considered significant). Results: The mean MCI width was 8.58 mm, the mean MCI cervical width was 7.96 mm, the mean MCI height was 9.69 mm, the average MCI width‐to‐height ratio was 89%, and the average MCI cervical width‐to‐height ratio was 82%. The intersex variations in dental values were not statistically significant. None of the studied facial dimensions showed any significant correlation with any of the MCI measurements. Conclusion: The faces of Syrian men were larger than those of Syrian women, but their MCIs had similar proportions and sizes. Background: Diet and exercise interventions have been associated with improved body composition and physical fitness. However, evidence regarding their combined effects in older adults is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a combined 12-week Mediterranean diet-based sustainable healthy diet (SHD) and multicomponent training (MT) intervention on body composition, anthropometry, and physical fitness in older adults. Methods: Diet intervention groups received a weekly SHD food supply and four sessions, including a SHD culinary practical workshop. The exercise program included MT 50 min group session, three times a week, on non-consecutive days. Body composition and physical fitness variables were assessed through dual X-ray absorptiometry, anthropometric measurements, and senior fitness tests. Repeated measures ANOVA, with terms for group, time, and interaction, was performed. Results: Our results showed that a combined intervention significantly lowered BMI and total fat. Also, significant differences between assessments in all physical fitness tests, except for aerobic endurance, were observed. Adjusted models show significant differences in BMI (p = 0.049) and WHR (p = 0.037) between groups and in total fat (p = 0.030) for the interaction term. Body strength (p < 0.001), balance tests (p < 0.001), and aerobic endurance (p = 0.005) had significant differences amongst groups. Considering the interaction term, differences were observed for upper body strength (p = 0.046) and flexibility tests (p = 0.004 sit and reach, p = 0.048 back scratch). Background/objectives: Considering the diverse symptomatology of COVID-19—ranging from mild to severe cases—multi-professional interventions are crucial for enhancing physical recovery, nutritional status, and mental health outcomes in affected patients. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of such an intervention on health-related physical fitness and biomarkers in overweight COVID-19 survivors with varying degrees of symptom severity after 8 weeks and 16 weeks. Methods: This non-randomized clinical trial included 59 overweight COVID-19 survivors (32 males and 27 females) divided into three groups: mild (n = 31), moderate (n = 13), and severe/critical (n = 15). The participants underwent a multi-professional program and were assessed for anthropometric and body composition (primary outcome), as well as physical fitness and biochemical markers (secondary outcome) 8 and 16 weeks before the intervention. Results: After 8 weeks, time effects were observed for the maximum isometric handgrip strength (p < 0.001), maximum isometric lumbar-traction strength (p = 0.01), flexibility (p < 0.001), abdominal strength–endurance (p < 0.001), the sit-and-stand test (p < 0.001), maximum oxygen consumption (p < 0.001), and distance covered in the 6 min walk test (p < 0.001). Additionally, time effects were also observed for fat mass (p = 0.03), body fat percentage (p = 0.02), abdominal circumference (p = 0.01), total cholesterol (p < 0.001), low-density lipoproteins (p < 0.001), and glycated hemoglobin (p < 0.001), with lower values after multi-professional interventions. After 16 weeks, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure showed significant reductions independently of the intervention group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that multi-professional interventions can provide substantial benefits for post-COVID-19 patients, regardless of the severity of their initial symptoms. Background: We aimed to evaluate the role of nutrition and behavior education intervention in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity by comparing changes in obesity-related characteristics among obese children during a follow-up period of 12 months. Methods: This study was designed as a prospective cohort study in children aged between 6 and 18 years, with exogenous obesity who applied to Istanbul Research and Training Hospital, Pediatrics Department, between January 2018 and July 2019. Beginning at the sixth month, a program for nutrition and behavior education for obesity prevention and treatment was initiated and continued during the second half of the study period. Results: The mean age of 59 children (29 females, 30 males) was 11.73 ± 2.78. BMI levels did not show a significant difference in the first 6 months, but decreased significantly during the second 6 months of the study. Screen time, fast eating behavior, overeating behavior and food score index scores also demonstrated significant improvements during the intervention period of the study, between 6 and 12 months. Conclusion: It was concluded that nutrition and behavior education for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity could be a successful intervention with close follow-up. Introduction: The first rib is the shortest, most curved and atypical of all ribs. An angle is visible between the head and the tubercle at the inferior portion of the neck, which can indicate the sex of the individual when viewed in a non anatomical position. Aim: To determine the morphometric and morphological variations of the first rib in the population of Rajasthan. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Anatomy Department of SMS Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, from January 2023 to April 2024. A total of 90 adult human dry first ribs (45 right and 45 left) of unknown age and sex were studied. Intact right and left ribs were included, while damaged first ribs were excluded. Data were collected using a Vernier calliper and thread to measure length, height, angle, external length, internal length, shortest external length and shortest internal length. Morphological variations, such as the scalene tubercle and vascular groove, were observed. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare means between the right and left-sides and correlation analysis assessed relationships between angular orientation and anatomical dimensions. The statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2020 and IBM Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Results: The descriptive statistics for the measured variables are as follows: the mean height and length on the right-side were 6.99±3.45 cm and 26.69±2.41 cm, respectively, while on the leftside they were 7.35±2.55 cm and 26.10±2.80 cm, respectively. The angle was greater on the left-side (16.59±6.18°). Statistical analysis indicated non significant differences between all the variables of the right and left-sides (p-value >0.05), except for strong positive correlations between angle and height (Right: r-value=0.986, p-value=0.001; Left: r-value= 0.952, p-value=0.001). Conclusion: The morphometric parameters of the first rib indicate non significant differences between the right and leftsides. The strong positive correlations between angle and height have clinical significance, as they can assist in forensic and anatomical studies related to intervertical dimensions and anatomical alignment based on the angular orientation of the first rib. Imagining life before the advent of modern medical treatments is challenging. Today, congenital dysplasia is typically diagnosed within the first months of a child's life, allowing for timely intervention. In the past, however, this condition often went unrecognized and untreated, as evidenced by archaeological findings that document the presence of congenital dysplasia persisting into adulthood. We present the case of the individual recovered from the hypogeal cemetery of Santa Maria Maggiore in Vercelli, Italy, a funerary context dated from the 18th to the 19th century. Using macroscopic and radiographic analyses, various morphological irregularities were identified, consistent with the characteristics of developmental hip dysplasia. The skeletal remains identified as FU12 SU151 include a right os coxa and femur, belonging to an adult female. The femur features a 90-degree femoral head angle and a shortened neck with nodules. The acetabulum shows significant morphological changes, including a triangular shape and absence of lunate surfaces, deviating from the normal structure for femoral articulation. CT scans revealed a void within the acetabulum, indicating an absence of material. Despite preservation challenges that restrict the identification of definitive signs, our findings offer valuable insights into possible developmental dysplasia in historic skeletal remains. This research provides insights into the impact of untreated congenital conditions on past populations, underscoring the importance of preserving and studying such remains to enhance our understanding of historical health issues. Simple Summary: Sex estimation based on bones is a technique used to determine the biological sex of an individual from skeletal remains. It relies on the anatomical differences between male and female skeletons. Various bone characteristics have been incorporated into methods for sex estimation. Linear measurements are commonly used features in classification models for sex estimation. On the other hand, angle measurements are rarely included in such models, although they are important characteristics of the geometry of the bones and could provide essential information for the discrimination between the male and female bones. The goal of this research is to examine the potential of cranial angles for sex estimation and to identify the set of the most dimorphic angles by applying machine learning algorithms. The development of current sexing methods largely depends on the use of adequate sources of data and adjustable classification techniques. Most sex estimation methods have been based on linear measurements, while the angles have been largely ignored, potentially leading to the loss of valuable information for sex discrimination. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of cranial angles for sex estimation and to differentiate the most dimorphic ones by training machine learning algorithms. Computed tomography images of 154 males and 180 females were used to derive data of 36 cranial angles. The classification models were created by support vector machines, naïve Bayes, logistic regression, and the rule-induction algorithm CN2. A series of cranial angle subsets was arranged by an attribute selection scheme. The algorithms achieved the highest accuracy on subsets of cranial angles, most of which correspond to well-known features for sex discrimination. Angles characterizing the lower forehead and upper midface were included in the best-performing models of all algorithms. The accuracy results showed the considerable classification potential of the cranial angles. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors for future diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and low grip strength (GS) is associated with an increased risk of MS. However, the index (among absolute GS, relative GS, and anthropometric indices) that is more strongly associated with MS has not been conclusively identified. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to simultaneously examine the associations of MS with relative and absolute GS and anthropometric indices in a Korean population. Methods: In this large-scale cross-sectional study, we used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A total of 20,915 subjects were included in the statistical analyses. Complex sample binary logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between MS and indices such as the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body mass index (BMI), and absolute and relative GS. Results: The prevalence of MS was 40.48% in men and 34.4% in women. The mean GS values in the healthy group and MS group were 38.06 ± 0.13 and 38.06 ± 0.15 years for men (p = 0.980) and 22.72 ± 0.07 and 21.19 ± 0.11 years for women (p < 0.001), respectively. Among all the indices, the WHtR was the index most strongly associated with MS in men. Among the GS indices, the GS/weight index was closely associated with MS, and the magnitude of this association was stronger than that of the absolute GS index. In women, the WHtR was the most related index to MS among all the indices. Among the GS indices, the GS/weight and GS/BMI indices were strongly associated with MS, and the magnitudes of these associations were much greater than those of the absolute GS index. Conclusions: Although absolute and relative GS indices are strongly associated with MS in the Korean population, the strongest association was observed for the simple anthropometric index (WHtR). Background and Objectives: This research investigated the morphometric dimensions of the optic foramen (OF), superior orbital fissure (SOF) and inferior orbital fissure (IOF), using indirect measurement techniques such as laser scanning, making it likely the first study of its kind. This study aimed to identify the morphometric variability of the main orbit communications and to highlight the differences between genders. Materials and Methods: The anthropometric study was conducted on sixty dry skulls (120 orbits) of adults aged between 20 and 70 years. Measurements of orbital communications were made using the RS6 laser scanner. The orbital parameters that were investigated are as follows: length and width of the SOF and IOF, and height and width of the OF. Results: In males, the average height of the OF was 8.27 mm and 8.13 mm in females, while the average width of the OF was 6.34 mm in males and 5.83 mm in females. The SOF average length was 21.09 mm in males and 17.58 mm in females. The widths of the SOF in the three thirds (anterior, middle and posterior) in males were 5.14/4.77/7.11 mm and 2.28/3.48/5.80 mm in females. The average length of the IOF was 33.05 mm in males and 32.30 mm in females. The widths of the IOF in the three thirds (anterior, middle and posterior) were 5.61/3.92/4.70 mm in males and 7.24/4.68/4.08 mm in females. Conclusions: The OF height and width were higher in males compared to females. The SOF length and width were higher in males compared to females. The IOF length was higher in males for the right orbit and higher in females for the left orbit. The IOF width for both orbits was higher in females in the anterior and middle third, and higher for males in the posterior third. Evaluation of dry skulls using laser scanning is reliable and recommended for data accuracy. Background and aims: This study aimed to examine the cumulative effects of body mass index (BMI), body roundness index (BRI), pulse pressure (PP), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) on Type 2 diabetes (T2D) morbidity. Methods: A total of 78,456 participants aged older than 45 years were extracted from basic public health services in China. During the 2-year follow-up, 6,942 individuals had developed T2D. The binary logistic regression models and multinomial logistic regression models were conducted to investigate the effects of cumulative metabolic parameters on incident T2D, prediabetes regression and progression. Results: We found statistically deleterious impacts of exposure to high cumulative BMI, BRI, PP, TG and low cumulative HDL on T2D morbidity and prediabetes progression. Compared to the group with low cumulative of all five parameters, the adjusted ORs for new-onset T2D for participants presenting with 1–2, 3, and 4–5 elevated metabolic parameters were 1.41(1.31,1.52), 1.93(1.74,2.13) and 2.21(1.94,2.51), respectively. There was additive interaction between FPG level and cumulative metabolic parameters with T2D. Compared with participants with the lowest quartile of FPG and low cumulative of all 5 parameters, those with the highest quartile of FPG and high cumulative of 4–5 parameters had a 14.63 [95% CI (12.27, 17.42)] higher risk of incident T2D. Conclusions: Participants with more numbers of high-cumulative metabolic parameters were associated with a higher risk of incident T2D and prediabetes progression. Craniofacial anthropometry is important for identity, diagnosis of congenital anomalies etc. The incidence of craniofacial abnormalities is high in the Southeast Asian region. The population of Meghalaya differs in features from other states of Northeast India and the neighbouring East Asia. The objective was to study the craniofacial anthropometric features of the ethnic adults in the Meghalaya state of Northeast India. This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2022 to 2023 in the ENT OPD. OPD patients of Meghalayan ethnicity were included in the study. Head length (HL), head breadth (HB), Cephalic index (CI), intercanthal distance (ICD), lateral canthal distance (LCD) and ear length (EL) were measured. A total of 104 adults were included. The majority of the individuals belonged to the Khasi community 51 (49%) followed by the Garo community 27 (26%) and the Jaintia community 26 (25%). The mean ± S.D age of the total sample population was 29.5 ± 8.4 years. The mean CI of the total sample population was 79.13 (mesocephalic). No statistically significant difference was noted between male-female CI in the total and subpopulation groups. In our study, the common head types were dolichocephalic (29%), brachycephalic (29%), mesocephalic (21%), hyperbrachycephalic (16%) and ultrabrachycephalic (5%). A statistically significant difference was noted between Khasi and Jaintia in HL, HW, CI, LCD; between Khasi and Garo in HL, ICD, LCD and between Garo and Jaintia in HW, CI, ICD. We believe our conventional craniofacial anthropometry data could add to the pool of regional anthropometry data and be used for future scientific purposes like anthropology, maxillofacial surgeries, designing helmets, forensic analysis, and gender differentiation. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the normative percentiles for liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using shear wave elastography in an adult Asian Indian population as part of the preventive radiology initiative of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). Methods LSMs were ascertained by two-dimensional (2D) shear wave elastography using the Mindray Resona series of ultrasound machines. The image quality was assessed using the motion stability index (M-STB) and reliability (RLB) map. Ten acquisitions were documented, and an interquartile range-to-median (IQR/M) ratio ≤30% kilopascal (kPa) units was considered a good-quality measurement. A subgroup of the study population without comorbidities was chosen to derive the normative percentile distribution of LSM using a generalized least squares multivariable fractional polynomial regression model that adjusted for sex and body mass index (BMI). The effectiveness of the estimated percentiles was assessed on the entire study population using the greater than 90th percentile value of the LSM as the cutoff for abnormality. Results The study included 852 people who underwent shear wave elastography from June 2022 to July 2023. The magnitude of compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) and clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) was 6.81% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.30–8.7) and 4.91% (95% CI: 3.67–6.60), respectively. The normative percentiles were estimated from 282 persons without associated comorbidity and risk factors. The mean age (standard deviation [SD]) of the normal individuals was 40.90 ± 12.92 years, and 210 (71.47%) were males. The mean age (SD) of the 570 persons excluded from the normative percentiles analysis was 47.94 (12.49) years and 72.11% were males. The sex- and BMI-adjusted age-specific 90th percentiles of LSM were 8.76, 8.78, 8.96, 8.97, 9.25, and 9.45 kPa for 18 to 20, 21 to 30, 31 to 40, 41 to 50, 51 to 60, and 61 to 70 years, respectively. Conclusion The sex- and BMI-adjusted age-specific 90th percentiles for LSM using shear wave elastography in Asian Indian adults are almost similar to the greater than 9 kPa cutoff proposed by the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound Liver Elastography Consensus Statement guidelines to discriminate cACLD and CSPH from normal individuals. Background: Available conventional tibial tubercle lateralization (TTL) parameters fail to account for individual patient size or anatomy. Purposes: To evaluate the predictive ability of individualized TTL parameters and clarify the best predictor of patellar dislocation (PD) and to determine the relationship of the best predictor with other risk factors of PD with quadriceps isotonic contraction. Study Design: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2. Methods: A total of 15 patients with PD (28 knees) and 14 controls (28 knees) underwent 4-dimensional computed tomography, and the image with the knee fully extended and quadriceps isotonically contracted was selected for evaluation. The following TTL parameters were measured on the images: tibial tubercle–trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance, tibial tubercle–Roman arch distance, and tibial tubercle–posterior cruciate ligament distance, as well as their ratios to femoral condylar width and patellar width (PW). In addition, the following parameters were measured: Insall-Salvati ratio, Blackburne-Peel ratio, Caton-Deschamps ratio, modified Insall-Salvati ratio, bisect offset index, congruence angle, lateral patellar tilt, lateral trochlear inclination, sulcus depth, sulcus angle, trochlear groove medialization, patella–patellar tendon angle, patellofemoral axis angle (P-FAA), patellar articular facet–patellar tendon angle, patellar articular facet–femoral axis angle (PA-FAA), and patellar shape according to Wiberg type. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated to access the diagnostic accuracy of the TTL parameters for PD, and the TTL parameters with high diagnostic ability were evaluated for correlation with the remaining parameters. Results: The TT-TG/PW ratio had the best diagnostic ability for PD (AUC = 0.890). The TT-TG/PW ratio was positively correlated with bisect offset index, congruence angle, lateral patellar tilt, P-FAA and PA-FAA (r = 0.610, 0.465, 0.635, 0.553 and 0.418, respectively; P ≤.027 for all), and TT-TG/PW ratio was greater in knees with type II versus type III patella (P =.017). Conclusion: With the knee fully extended and quadriceps isotonically contracted, the TT-TG/PW ratio was found to be the best predictor of PD and reflected individualized TTL, which helps with clinical preoperative planning. Background: Increases in peak shoulder distraction force and peak elbow valgus torque may influence throwing-arm pain and injury risk in youth pitchers. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to determine whether shoulder distraction force and elbow valgus torque while accounting for anthropometrics and pitch velocity can predict the presence of pain in youth baseball pitchers. It was hypothesized that throwing-arm pain could be predicted using the concept of biomechanical efficiency, where a pitcher who is less efficient (having higher force or torque with the same pitch velocity) is more likely to experience pain. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: A total of 38 youth baseball pitchers (mean age, 13.3 ± 1.7 years) were divided into a pain group and pain-free group based on presence of throwing-arm pain as reported on a health history questionnaire. Each pitcher threw 3 maximal-effort fastballs to a catcher at regulation distance, and kinematics were measured using an electromagnetic motion-capture system (minimum 100 Hz). Height and weight as well as mean peak shoulder distraction force, peak elbow valgus torque, and pitch velocity across the 3 trials were evaluated. Logistic regression analyses determined whether shoulder distraction force or elbow valgus torque could predict the presence of throwing-arm pain when holding anthropometrics (body weight for shoulder distraction force; body weight and height for elbow valgus torque) and pitch velocity constant. Results: Shoulder distraction force significantly predicted the presence of throwing-arm pain after accounting for body weight and pitch velocity (χ2 = 9.49; P =.023). Specifically, for every 1-N increase in peak shoulder distraction force while holding body weight and pitch velocity constant, there was a 0.6% increased likelihood of experiencing throwing-arm pain. Elbow valgus torque could not predict the presence of pain when holding body weight, height, and pitch velocity constant. Conclusion: The models demonstrated that increases in peak shoulder distraction forces when holding pitch velocity and body weight constant increased a youth baseball pitcher's likelihood of experiencing throwing-arm pain. The study results support the concept of the biomechanical efficiency framework by offering evidence that maintaining pitch velocity with a lower joint load led to a lower likelihood of pain. Objective: To investigate the factors associated with diabesity in older women. Methods: This epidemiological study used a cross‐sectional design and included 196 older women (72.70 ± 7.20 years) from Jequié, Bahia, Brazil. Diabesity was defined as having both an elevated abdominal circumference (≥88 cm) and diabetes mellitus. For the inferential analyses, we constructed crude models followed by a multiple hierarchical explanatory model, with the following levels: Level 1 (socioeconomic variables), Level 2 (behavioral aspects), and Level 3 (health conditions). Poisson regression with a robust estimator was employed, and we calculated Prevalence Ratios (PR) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI). Results: The prevalence of abdominal obesity, diabetes mellitus, and diabesity were 79.60%, 27.80%, and 22.40%, respectively. Women who were insufficiently active had a higher likelihood of diabesity (PR: 2.04; 95% CI: 1.22–3.41), as did those who spent more time in sedentary behavior (PR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.04–3.16), used three or more continuous medications (PR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.29–4.89), or reported a negative self‐perception of health (PR: 2.57; 95% CI: 1.03–5.80). Conclusion: The study identified several factors associated with diabesity in older women: insufficient physical activity, prolonged sedentary behavior, polypharmacy, and negative self‐perception of health. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the anthropometry and body composition of vegetarian and omnivorous adults living in Portugal, while exploring nutritional and health parameters underlying observed differences. Methods: 425 omnivorous (OMNI), lacto-ovo-vegetarian (LOV), or vegan (VEG) healthy adults were recruited. Anthropometry was measured, and bioelectrical impedance analysis was performed. Participants answered food frequency, sociodemographic, and lifestyle questionnaires. Serum iron, ferritin, and CRP were quantified by spectrophotometry, and serum B12 vitamin and homocysteine were quantified by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Results: Total protein intake significantly decreased with increasing strictness of vegetarian habits (median (P25; P75) in g/day: 98.6 (79.5; 123.1), 90.4 (65.9; 121.0), and 87.6 (59.8; 118.5) for OMNI, LOV and VEG, respectively; p = 0.020), and carbohydrate intake was the highest in LOV (median (P25; P75) in g/day: 231.5 (178.4; 287.9), 283.9 (227.3; 342.6), and 263.0 (222.0; 348.3) for OMNI, LOV and VEG, respectively; p = 0.001). VEG were the main users of B12 vitamin (93% in VEG vs. 17% in OMNI and 59% in LOV, p = 0.001), and LOV were the main users of iron supplements (29% in LOV vs. 14% in OMNI and 13% in VEG, p = 0.042), respectively. Blood levels of B12 vitamin correlated negatively with blood homocysteine (rs = −0.386, p < 0.001) and positively with % muscle mass (rs = 0.136, p = 0.005). Participants using iron supplements presented higher C-reactive protein (CRP) (p = 0.014) and they had lower % MM (p = 0.003). Finally, when compared to being OMNI, being LOV independently associated with: (a) having +4.8% (p = 0.002) of fat mass, which could be due to higher carbohydrate intake, and (b) having −2.2% (p = 0.043) of muscle mass. Our data suggest that the association between diet and muscle mass could be attenuated in VEG due to B12 supplementation and/or aggravated in LOV due to iron supplementation-associated inflammation. Intramedullary nails (ILNs) are commonly used in orthopedic surgery for the fixation of long bone fractures and limb lengthening. Understanding the structural mechanics (i.e. nail bend) of an ILN device is crucial in determining its performance under various loading conditions. Furthermore, nail diameter was found to play a key role in an ILN's susceptibility to plastic deformity. This study aims to investigate the degree of nail bending and incidence of plastic deformity in patients receiving antegrade femoral ILNs (PRECICE, NuVasive, Inc.). Retrospectively evaluated 130 ILNs (PRECICE, NuVasive, Inc.) in 100 adult patients who underwent limb lengthening done in a single center. Patients who had concomitant osteotomies, tibial lengthening, malunion, non-union, mechanical failure, or revision surgery for any reason were excluded. All nails were inserted through the greater trochanter or piriformis. Patients' age, weight, height, and body mass index (BMI)were extracted. Radiologic assessments involved analyzing long lower limb standing X-rays before, during, and at consolidation for total distraction and nail bend. Naildiameter and patient characteristics were directly sourced from medical records. Nail bend at consolidation averaged 2.4° (SD 2.4), ranging from 0 to 9. Additionally, total femoral lengthening was assessed, with a mean value of 5.3 cm (SD 2.1). A significant positive association was observed in the nail bend and weight (weight in kg/nail diameter in mm) coefficient (P < 00.01). Bilateral limb lengthening was also correlated to increase nail bend (P < 00.05). Patient's weight to nail diameter ratio and bilateral limb lengthening were found to be significant factors affecting nail bend. These findings advance our understanding of the interrelation between the nail biomechanical profile and the patient's physical attributes, offering important implications for limb lengthening. III. Background: Lifestyle behaviors including physical activity, sleep, nutrition, smoking, and alcohol consumption are independently associated with health, yet the relationship between these behaviors and mental health has not been explored among airline pilots. The aim of this study was to measure the association between health behaviors and mental health. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted among 502 airline pilots. The primary outcome measure was the mental component score (MCS), derived from the Short Form Health Survey 12v2. We collected information regarding age, sex, ethnicity, height, body mass, alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking status, moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA), fruit and vegetable intake, and sleep duration. Results: After controlling for demographic and anthropometric parameters, MVPA, fruit and vegetable intake, and sleep duration were positively correlated with MCS (p ≤ 0.001), and alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking were negatively correlated with MCS (p ≤ 0.001). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed alcohol consumption was the strongest predictor of MCS (β = −0.308, p ≤ 0.001), followed by smoking (β = −0.236, p ≤ 0.001), MVPA (β = 0.233, p ≤ 0.001), sleep (β = 0.148, p ≤ 0.001), and fruit and vegetable intake (β = 0.097, p = 0.003). Conclusion: The results suggest that greater physical activity, sleep duration, and fruit and vegetable intake are associated with better mental health. Background: Menopause induces physiological changes in women, including increased risks of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and muscle loss, which can be mitigated by physical exercise. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week multicomponent exercise programme, performed 2 or 3 days per week, on health and fitness parameters in postmenopausal women. Methods: Eighty-three postmenopausal women (aged 50–65 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (CG, n = 27), 2 days/week exercise group (EG2, n = 28), and 3 days/week exercise group (EG3, n = 28). The intervention included strength, balance, aerobic, and flexibility exercises. Anthropometric measurements (body weight, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, lean body mass, body fat percentage), lipid profile, and isometric strength were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Data were analysed using a repeated-measures ANOVA, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Results: Significant reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio were observed in EG2 and EG3 compared to CG. Lean body mass increased significantly in both EG2 (p < 0.001, ES = 1.37) and EG3 (p < 0.001, ES = 1.50). EG3 showed a greater reduction in body fat percentage than EG2 (p = 0.049). Strength and balance improved significantly in both experimental groups compared to CG, with no significant differences between EG2 and EG3. EG3 also showed superior improvements in lipid profile compared to EG2 and CG. Conclusion: A multicomponent exercise programme, particularly with higher frequency (3 days per week), improves body composition, strength, balance, and lipid profile in postmenopausal women. Background: Postmenopausal women frequently encounter a range of symptoms, including fatigue, diminished physical strength, reduced energy levels, vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes, and vaginal atrophy, all of which adversely affect their overall quality of life. Engaging in physical activity and structured exercise may effectively alleviate these symptoms and enhance overall well-being. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity and quality of life in postmenopausal Greek women. Methods: This cross-sectional clinical study included 219 postmenopausal women. Women with natural menopause for at least 12 consecutive months were enrolled in this descriptive, cross-sectional study. The female participants were asked to fill out the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form (IPAQ), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the EuroQol (EQ-5D-5L) instrument. Anthropometric measurements included weight, height, and waist circumference measurements. Results: A total of 219 postmenopausal women with an age of 61.4 ± 6.1 years and body mass index (BMI) of 25.6 ± 3.7 kg/m2 were studied. Out of the total postmenopausal women studied, 64.8% were physically active. The mean value of MET-min/week was M = 1383.46 ± 1030.12. Physical activity among postmenopausal Greek women showed a strong correlation of PA with quality of life (r = 0.5; p ≤ 0.001) and age (r = 0.55; p ≤ 0.001) and a medium correlation with the HADS (r = 0.4; p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: There was a 64.8% prevalence of physically active postmenopausal Greek women. The findings underscore the significance of fostering physical activity and quality of life among postmenopausal women to formulate efficacious therapeutic interventions. The results demonstrate a correlation between physical activity and the age of female participants, quality of life, and the HADS and can be used to improve postmenopausal women's physical activity levels, which is recommended as a strategy for improving the quality of life in postmenopausal women. Background/Objectives: Although the health benefits related to physical exercise for adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) have been recognized, studies indicate that individuals with CP at school age are less involved in physical activities than their typical peers and are twice as likely to engage in sedentary behaviors. Therefore, our study aims to investigate the effects of a physical exercise program on physical fitness, stress, anxiety, and quality-of-life variables. Methods: A total of 15 teenagers with ambulatory CP (n = 8 boys, n = 7 girls, between 12 and 18 years old; M = 14.35; SD = 1.76) completed a 12-week program based on a mixed-method approach with face-to-face and live online activities. The outcome measures were physical fitness, stress, anxiety, and quality of life. Results: The 12-week exercise program resulted in gains in muscular strength, flexibility, and aerobic endurance tests, characterized by an increase in average walking speed and average VO2 max. There was also a significant change in the perception of emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress reported by the participants. Conclusions: The program proved to be effective in physical fitness tests and perception of emotional states. Background: Several studies have documented the detrimental impacts of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure to a range of pediatric respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, and reduced lung function. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of SHS exposure on lung function, physical fitness, and body mass index (BMI) in children aged 10 to 14 years. Methods: This cross-sectional study included children aged 10 to 14 years at the Elementary School "Trilj" in Trilj, Croatia. Data on SHS exposure were collected using a questionnaire. Antropometric and spirometry measurements were performed. Physical fitness was assessed using the shuttle run (BEEP) test. Results: This study included 157 children, 89 (56.69%) boys and 68 (43.31%) girls. Children exposed to every day SHS in households had significantly lower values of forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF) (p < 0.001) and higher z-score BMI levels (p = 0.018) in comparison to unexposed children. Logistic regression showed that children unexposed to SHS had higher odds for better results in the BEEP test (OR 62.45, 95% CI 21.26–179.24, p < 0.001). Children with poorer physical fitness, expressed by lower BEEP score levels, had significantly lower FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF (p < 0.001). Background/Objectives: It is vital to identify children whose weight status means that they may benefit from medical or behavioural support, but adult visual judgements of child weight status are inaccurate, and children are seldom routinely weighed and measured. Consequently, there is a need for validated visual tools for use in training, communication, and interventions relating to child weight. Methods: This paper presents validation data for a set of innovative photo-realistic colour body size scales depicting boys and girls aged 4–5 and 10–11. Each age- and gender-specific scale consists of 7 figures based on three-dimensional (3D) scans of 388 children to accurately represent the change in body size caused by changing adiposity. To assess scale validity, 238 adult participants (105 men, 132 women, 1 non-binary individual) undertook two tasks: rating figure adiposity using a visual analogue scale and ranking figures in ascending order of adiposity (OSF Reference: gdp9j). Results: Participants accurately estimated the relative adiposity of each figure, i.e., they were able to tell the difference between figures and correctly rank them by size. This demonstrates scale validity for use in body size tasks. One hundred and fifty-one participants also provided 3-day test–retest data, which demonstrates excellent short-term reliability. Conclusions: Overall, the MapMe child body size scales provide an anthropometrically accurate, valid, reliable, and usable tool for size-related tasks and communication with adults regarding child weight. Background: Antiseizure medications (ASMs) are crucial for managing epilepsy in children. However, a well-documented side effect of ASMs is their impact on bone health, often due to interference with vitamin D metabolism. This can lead to vitamin D deficiency in children with epilepsy. This study aimed to determine if a daily dose of 400 IU or 1000 IU would maintain adequate vitamin D levels in children with epilepsy. Methods: A phase IV randomized controlled trial enrolled children aged 2–16 years with epilepsy and receiving antiseizure medications. Children were divided into two groups: the monotherapy group, which was defined as children on one antiseizure medication (ASM), and the polytherapy group, which was defined as children receiving two or more ASMs. Eligible children with levels above 75 nmol/L were randomized to receive a maintenance dose of either 400 IU/day or 1000 IU/day of cholecalciferol. Baseline and 6-month assessments included demographic data, anthropometric measurements, seizure type, medications, seizure control, and 25(OH)D level. Results: Out of 163 children, 90 were on monotherapy and 25 on polytherapy. After 6 months of vitamin D maintenance, the proportion of children with 25(OH)D concentration below 75 nmol/L was 75.0% in the 400 IU group and 54.8% in the 1000 IU group. In the monotherapy group, baseline seizure-free children increased from 69% to 83.6% after treating vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion: Daily vitamin D supplementation with 1000 IU may be beneficial for children with epilepsy, particularly those receiving monotherapy, to maintain sufficiency and potentially improve seizure control. Objective: Increasing the awareness of adolescents about hedonic hunger, understanding the difference between homeostatic hunger and hedonic hunger, and adolescents learning to control themselves to stop excessive food consumption are extremely important for a healthy adulthood. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of the multi-strategy nutrition education programs (MSNEP) on hedonic hunger, food addiction, nutrition literacy, and nutritional status in adolescents. Methods: This study was planned using a pre-test and post-test design. The MSNEP was conducted with 132 adolescents (11–15 years; 69 boys, 63 girls) for 4 weeks (45 min–1 h/session). Data were obtained using questionnaires with face-to-face interviews at pre-education (baseline) and post-education (week 4 and week 8). The survey form included sociodemographic information, nine item short version of Children's Power of Food Scale (C-PFS-9), the Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children 2.0 (YFAS-C 2.0), the Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale (ANLS), anthropometric measurements, and 24-hour dietary recall. Results: A decrease in C-PFS-9 total scores was found compared to the baseline (p < 0.001). While the YFAS-C 2.0 score decreased in boys compared to the baseline (p < 0.05), no significant difference was found in girls (p > 0.05). A difference was found in the ANLS scores for girls (p = 0.01), but no difference was found in the scores for boys during the study (p > 0.05). At week 4, the consumption of dairy products, legumes, vegetables and fruits, bread and grains, nuts, and hard-shelled seeds increased compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). Also, daily protein and fiber intake increased (p < 0.05). Accordingly, a higher YFAS-C 2.0 score predicted greater hedonic hunger. A lower ANLS score was a predictor for higher food taste and food available scores. Conclusions: In conclusion, the MSNEP was found to have positive effects on hedonic hunger, food addiction, nutritional literacy, and healthy eating behaviors. The study revealed differences between girls and boys. In order to maintain healthy body weights in adolescents, it is recommended that the MSNEP be provided in schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
