Submarine hydrate mining can trigger geological disasters, including submarine landslides and seafloor subsidence due to excess pore pressure and weakened layers, which may potentially lead to the reactivation of faults and increased seismic activity. However, current research encounters challenges in assessing geotechnical issues associated with long-term and large-scale production from well grids located in sloped areas. Limited by the complexity of the hydrate sediment, a multifield coupled numerical model of hydrate slope in the Shenhu area was established. Utilizing the modified Mohr–Coulomb model as the constitutive model for hydrate-bearing sediments to track the dynamic reduction in strength and employing the shear strength method to assess submarine slope stability, a series of depressurization strategies are applied to evaluate the risks associated with submarine landslides and seafloor subsidence. Results show that the hydrate dissociation tends to stagnate after a period of mining. The strength of the hydrate decomposed area is severely reduced, and a volume deficit occurs in this area, causing formation displacement. The peripheral region of the decomposed area is compacted by high stress, resulting in a serious decrease in permeability and porosity, which limits the continued decomposition of hydrates. The large-scale submarine landslides with hydrates decomposition will not appear in this block. However, several meters' seafloor subsidence over a wide range risks engineering safety significantly. The amount of seafloor subsidence in the first 50 days is approximately half of the final settlement. A higher production pressure drop can speed up the recovery rate while resulting in more significant seafloor subsidence and slippage. High metastatic propensity of osteosarcoma leads to its therapeutic failure and poor prognosis. Although nuclear activation miRNAs (NamiRNAs) are reported to activate gene transcription via targeting enhancer and further promote tumor metastasis, it remains uncertain whether NamiRNAs regulate osteosarcoma metastasis and their exact mechanism. Here, we found that extracellular vesicles of the malignant osteosarcoma cells (143B) remarkably increased the migratory abilities of MNNG cells representing the benign osteosarcoma cells by two folds, which attributed to their high miR‐1246 levels. Specially, miR‐1246 located in nucleus could activate the migration gene expression (such as MMP1) to accelerate MNNG cell migration through elevating the enhancer activities via increasing H3K27ac enrichment. Instead, MMP1 expression was dramatically inhibited after Argonaute 2 (AGO2) knockdown. Notably, in vitro assays demonstrated that AGO2 recognized the hybrids of miR‐1246 and its enhancer DNA via PAZ domains to prevent their degradation from RNase H and these protective roles of AGO2 may favor the gene activation by miR‐1246 in vivo. Collectively, our findings suggest that miR‐1246 could facilitate osteosarcoma metastasis through interacting with enhancer to activate gene expression dependent on AGO2, highlighting the nuclear AGO2 as a guardian for NamiRNA‐targeted gene activation and the potential of miR‐1246 for osteosarcoma metastasis therapy. Field observations were combined with a coupled hydrodynamic and water quality model to investigate the spatial and temporal variation in Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in Jinmeng Bay, China. The relatively high Chl-a values were distributed in the inshore waters, mainly due to the abundant nutrient inflow from the Tanghe River. The model's results indicate that the Chl-a concentration was much higher in seaweed beds surrounded by artificial islands and reefs under the southeasterly wind, largely due to the fact that pollutants are prone to accumulate in coastal areas where flow is attenuated by the presence of natural and artificial marine structures. It was also found that the southwesterly winds suppress the inflow of nutrients from the Tanghe River to the coastal areas, and, therefore, lower the Chl-a levels. River input and wind forcing are the major factors that influence Chl-a concentrations in the anthropogenically influenced bay. This finding provides useful guidance for the prediction and mitigation of green tides in Jinmeng Bay in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the recent development from grey infrastructures to green infrastructures, artificial reefs become more popular in coastal protection projects. To investigate the responses of beach profile evolution to the presence of an artificial reef, a non-hydrostatic model is established. Both hydrodynamic and morphodynamic evolution for the beach with and without an artificial reef are compared under regular wave conditions. In addition, the protected beach profile evolution by an artificial reef is discussed under irregular wave conditions. Three key parameters in non-hydrostatic simulation are considered for sensitivity analysis, including maximum wave steepness criterium (maxbrsteep), water depth factor (depthscale), and equilibrium sediment concentration factor (sedcal). The numerical results under regular wave conditions indicate that the artificial reef enhances wave attenuation by inducing wave breaking. In addition, the artificial reef reduces local flow velocity and offshore sediment transport by 51%, therefore decrease the total erosion by 53%. Over the artificial reef, wave skewness and asymmetry go through a drastic change. Under irregular wave conditions, short waves contribute to the wave energy mainly and reflection-induced standing wave effects decline considerably. It demonstrates that the artificial reef can protect the beach from regular and irregular waves by reducing erosion and offshore transport of suspended sediments. Moreover, in the wave breaking area, the increase of maximum wave steepness criterium may give arise to the wave height. The morphological evolution is more sensitive to water depth factor than equilibrium sediment concentration factor, because the former is a controlling factor for beach profile characteristics while the latter forms the sandbar varying irregularly in shape. Ocean wind speed and wind direction are estimated simultaneously using the normalized radar cross sections [[sigma].sup.0] corresponding to two neighboring (25-km) blocks, within a given synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image, having slightly different incidence angles. This method is motivated by the methodology used for scatterometer data. The wind direction ambiguity is removed by using the direction closest to that given by a buoy or some other source of information. We demonstrate this method with 11 ENVISAT Advanced SAR sensor images of the Gulf of Mexico and coastal waters of the North Atlantic. Estimated wind vectors are compared with wind measurements from buoys and scatterometer data. We show that this method can surpass other methods in some cases, even those with insufficient visible wind-induced streaks in the SAR images, to extract wind vectors. Conventional horizontal or vertical polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images seldom perform well in detecting azimuthally traveling ocean waves. However, theoretical analyses suggest that linear-polarimetric backscatter measurements may be more sensitive to these waves and, therefore, that a SAR with linear polarization is expected to give a better measurement of azimuthally traveling ocean waves. We derive the polarization-orientation modulation transform function and tilt modulation transform function of the linear-polarimetric SAR. Through numerical simulations based on these formulations, we examine the effects of radar and ocean wave parameters on linear-polarimetric SAR image spectra. We suggest a method to eliminate the 180[degrees] directional ambiguity in determining the true wave direction. Our numerical simulations show that the correlation between ocean wave spectra and SAR image spectra is improved for larger radar incidence angles and longer ocean waves. For real aperture radar, we suggest that the polarimetric modulation allows measurement of waves travelling in the azimuth direction. Moreover, as suggested by Schuler et al., this may be the dominant modulation for many SAR aircraft measurements, particularly for moderate sea states. Sea level rise increases community risks from erosion, wave flooding, and tides. Current management typically protects existing development and infrastructure with coastal armoring. These practices ignore long-term impacts to public trust coastal recreation and natural ecosystems. This adaptation framework models physical responses to the public beach and private upland for each adaptation strategy over time, linking physical changes in widths to damages, economic costs, and benefits from beach recreation and nature using low-lying Imperial Beach, California, as a case study. Available coastal hazard models identified community vulnerabilities, and local risk communication engagement prioritized five adaptation approaches—armoring, nourishment, living shorelines, groins, and managed retreat. This framework innovates using replacement cost as a proxy for ecosystem services normally not valued and examines a managed retreat policy approach using a public buyout and rent-back option. Specific methods and economic values used in the analysis need more research and innovation, but the framework provides a scalable methodology to guide coastal adaptation planning everywhere. Case study results suggest that coastal armoring provides the least public benefits over time. Living shoreline approaches show greater public benefits, while managed retreat, implemented sooner, provides the best long-term adaptation strategy to protect community identity and public trust resources. To develop the blue economy, one of the most critical factors is ocean space. Marine-related industries, such as offshore wind power, marine fishery, shipping and offshore oil, compete in near-shore and offshore space. The marine spatial planning is crucial for the development of these industries. The first Chinese pilot and commercial offshore wind projects were put into operation in 2007 and 2010 respectively. In the past decade, China's offshore wind power industry has experienced very high growth rates. According to the statistics of World Wind Energy Council, the installed capacity of China's offshore wind power reached 2790MW in 2017, accounting for 14.83% of the global capacity and ranking third after United Kingdom (36.33%) and Germany (28.46%). It is estimated that the development of China's offshore wind power industry will accelerate, and play a more important role in the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable energy system. The main objective of this paper is to study the spatial distribution and its evolution of China's offshore wind industry. It is organized as follow. Firstly, based on the latest data, the development of China's offshore wind power industry, including the existing, under construction projects, spatial distribution and the latest plan, has been reviewed. Secondly, it discusses the evolution of the spatial planning, the industry distribution, competition among marine industries and the coordination of government's departments. Thirdly, the underlying causes of the rapid and extensive expansion of offshore wind industry are studied. Finally, some policy recommendations are provided for the healthy and sustainable development of China's offshore wind power industry from the perspective of spatial planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ten-eleven translocation (Tet) proteins are key players involved in the dynamic regulation of cytosine methylation and demethylation. Inactivating mutations of Tet2 are frequently found in human malignancies, highlighting the essential role of Tet2 in cellular transformation. However, the factors that control Tet enzymatic activity remain largely unknown. Here, we found that methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 3 (MBD3) and its homolog MBD3-like 2 (MBD3L2) can specifically modulate the enzymatic activity of Tet2 protein, but not Tet1 and Tet3 proteins, in converting 5-methylcytosine (5mC) into 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC). Moreover, MBD3L2 is more effective than MBD3 in promoting Tet2 enzymatic activity through strengthening the binding affinity between Tet2 and the methylated DNA target. Further analysis revealed pronounced decreases in 5mC levels at MBD3L2 and Tet2 co-occupied genomic regions, most of which are promoter elements associated with either cancer-related genes or genes involved in the regulation of cellular metabolic processes. Our data add new insights into the regulation of Tet2 activity by MBD3 and MBD3L2, and into how that affects Tet2-mediated modulation of its target genes in cancer development.
