We propose a new proton beam-dump experiment, SHADOWS, to search for a large variety of feebly-interacting particles possibly produced in the interactions of a 400 GeV proton beam with a high-Z material dump. SHADOWS will use the 400 GeV primary proton beam extracted from the CERN SPS currently serving the NA62 experiment in the CERN North area. SHADOWS will take data off-axis concurrently to the HIKE experiment when the P42 beam line is operated in beam-dump mode to accumulate up to 5 · 10^19 protons on target in 4 years of operation. This document describes the main achievements with respect to the Expression of Interest and represents an intermediate step towards the Proposal.

Linear accelerator 4 (Linac4) is designed to accelerate negative hydrogen ions for injection into the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB). It will become the source of proton beams for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) after the long shutdown in 2019–2020. Linac4 will accelerate H– ions, consisting of a hydrogen atom with an additional electron, to 160 MeV energy and then inject them into the PSB, which is part of the LHC injection chain. The new accelerator comprises an ion source and four types of accelerating structures. The particles are accelerated first to 3 MeV energy by a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), then to 50 MeV by three Drift Tube Linacs (DTL) tanks, then to 100 MeV by seven Cell-Coupled Drift Tube Linac (CCDTL) modules, and finally to 160 MeV by twelve Pi-Mode Structures (PIMS). A chopper line placed between the RFQ and the first DTL tank modulates the linac beam at the PSB injection frequency. Linac4 includes transfer and measurement lines up to the PSB injection, where the ions are stripped of their two electrons to leave only protons. Linac4 is 76 metres long and located 12 metres below ground. The first low-energy beams were produced in 2013 and after the commissioning of all accelerating structures the milestone energy of 160 MeV was reached in 2016. Linac4 will be connected to the PSB during the long shutdown of 2019–20, after which it will replace the 50 MeV Linac2 as source of protons for the LHC. The Linac4 is a key element in the project to increase the luminosity of the LHC during the next decade.

This Report gives a full description of the ELENA Ring to be built within the circumference of the Antiproton Decelarator (AD) Ring, in Building 193 at CERN. The ELENA ring will further decelerate the antiprotons coming from the AD at the momentum of 100 MeV/c down to 13.7 MeV/c, which corresponds to the kinetic energy of 100 keV before extracting to the physics experiments in the same building. The history of such an extra low energy antiproton ring at CERN goes a long way back, and even to the Decelerator’s previous incarnation, the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR), which came into operation in 1983. Already at that time, there were physics’ requests to further decelerate the antiprotons expected from LEAR by proposals for ELENA. Appendix I illustrates the cover pages of two such CERN documents from 1982.

Linac4 is a new H- linear accelerator at CERN replacing Linac2 as injector to the PS Booster. Almost 100 electro-magnets of different types are needed for the Linac4 project. Following a detailed analysis of the requirements and constraints, several magnet designs have been studied and are well advanced. This paper presents the design considerations, main parameters and characteristics of the new Linac4 magnets and summarizes the present status.

MedAustron, a future centre for ion-therapy and research in Austria will comprise an accelerator facility based on a synchrotron for the delivery of protons and light ions for cancer treatment and for clinical and nonclinical research [1]. The main dipole for the synchrotron went through an extensive design process to meet the stringent requirements. The local and integrated field quality was optimized. The residual field levels in the magnet gap were calculated and the dynamic behaviour of the dipole magnet was studied, both in 2D and 3D, using OPERA. The pole profile has been optimized to reduce sextupolar components in the integrated field by adjusting the shims on the pole edge. A Rogowski-profile at the pole ends and the use of stainless-steel tension straps shall enhance the dynamic behaviour and guarantee a small time constants. Appropriate pole-end shimming will be used to compensate for residual multi-pole components and to fine-tune the magnetic length. The results of this comprehensive design study are summarized in this paper.

The implementation of the new Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) at the CERN Proton Synchrotron required major hardware changes for the nearly 50-year old accelerator. The installation of new Pulse Forming Networks (PFN) and refurbished kicker magnets for the extraction, new sextupole and octupole magnets, new power converters, together with an in-depth review of the machine aperture leading to the design of new vacuum chambers was required. As a result, a heavy programme of interventions had to be scheduled during the winter shut-down 2007-8. The newly installed hardware and its commissioning is presented and discussed in details.

Linac4 is an H- linear accelerator, intended to replace Linac2 as injector to the PS Booster (PSB). By delivering to the PSB a beam at 160 MeV energy, Linac4 will provide the conditions to double the brightness and intensity of the beam from the PSB, thus removing the first bottleneck towards higher brightness for the LHC and simplifying operation. Moreover, this new linac constitutes an essential component of any of the envisaged LHC upgrade scenarios and could open the way to future extensions of the CERN accelerator complex towards higher performance. This Technical Design Report presents a detailed technical overview of the Linac4 design as it stands at end 2006.

Since 2001 considerable effort has been devoted to the study of a possible replacement of the continuous-transfer extraction mode from the PS to the SPS. Such an approach, called Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE), is based on capture of the beam inside stable islands of transverse phase space, generated by sextupoles and octupoles, thanks to a properly chosen tune variation. Both numerical simulations and measurements with beam were performed to understand the properties of this new extraction mode. The experimental study was completed at the end of 2004 and by the end of 2005 a scheme to implement this novel approach in the PS machine was defined and its performance assessed. This design report presents the outcome of the studies undertaken both in terms of technical issues as well as of resources necessary to implement the proposed scheme.

A sizeable part of the LHC physics programme foresees lead-lead collisions with a design luminosity of 1027 cm-2 s-1. This will be achieved after an upgrade of the ion injector chain comprising Linac3, LEIR, PS and SPS machines [1,2]. Each LHC ring will be filled in 10 min by almost 600 bunches, each of 7×107 lead ions. Central to the scheme is the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) [3,4], which transforms long pulses from Linac3 into high-brilliance bunches by means of multi-turn injection, electron cooling and accumulation. Major limitations along the chain, including space charge, intrabeam scattering, vacuum issues and emittance preservation are highlighted. The conversion from LEAR (Low Energy Antiproton Ring) to LEIR involves new magnets and power converters, high-current electron cooling, broadband RF cavities, and a UHV vacuum system with getter (NEG) coatings to achieve a few 10-12 mbar. Major hardware changes in Linac3 and the PS are also covered. An early ion scheme with fewer bunches (but each at nominal intensity) reduces the work required for early LHC ion operation in spring 2008.

Since the year 2001 considerable efforts were devoted to the study of a possible replacement of the Continuous Transfer (CT) extraction mode from the PS to the SPS. Such an approach is based on the use of stable islands of phase space, generated by sextupoles and octupoles, to capture the beam inside, thanks to a properly chosen tune variation. Both numerical simulations and measurements with beam were performed to understand the properties of this new extraction mode. Recently, a Study Group was set-up with the mandate of studying this novel extraction in view of using it as a replacement for the CT, as well as technical issues related with this approach. The results of the analysis carried out so far, and the conclusions of the Study Group are presented and discussed in this report.

This report presents the actual QTG design. The quadrupole magnets are part of the "CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso" transfer line TT40. The design is optimized for a nominal beam energy of 400 GeV. The quadrupoles are resistive iron-dominated magnets with a gradient of 40 T/m and an inscribed radius of 22.5 mm. The 2200 mm long yokes will be built form low carbon steel laminations stacked between non-laminated end plates.

In November 2001, it was decided by the PS management board to replace a PS main magnet unit. Main Magnet Unit 1 (MU1) seemed to be the most promising candidate. Therefore the replacement (spare magnet number T 39) has to be tested and inspected to see if it still guarantees a reliable performance for the forthcoming years in operation after more than 15 years of storage. The results of these tests and measurements are subject of this report.

To prove that radial shims installed in the extraction regions of the PS ring have a non-negligible influence on the magnetic flux, a finite element simulation in ANSYS was carried out. A magnetic model was created for each half unit, which hold additional magnetic elements. It was found that these shims cause a decrease of the magnetic field in the main dipoles at the central orbit. From the result of the analysis, this field reduction could be quantified and the additional kicks, seen by the beam, were calculated.

In order to find out if there is any deformation of the PS-magnets due to the strong attracting magnetic force between the pole faces and to estimate how much this deformation could be, a series of inclination measurements was taken on the PS-main magnets near the extraction areas. The results of these measurements are shown in this report.

To produce dense pbar beams at very low energies (100-200 keV), a small decelerator ring could be built and installed between the existing AD ring and the experimental area. Phase-space blowup during deceleration would be compensated by electron cooling in order to obtain final emittances comparable to the 5MeV beam presently delivered by the AD. This report describes preliminary machine parameters and layout of ELENA and also gives an approximate estimate of cost and manpower needs.
