Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which are more economical than proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), stand out in the context of the rapid development of renewable energy. Superacid-catalyzed ether-free aromatic polymers have recently received a lot of attention due to their exceptional performance, but their development has been hampered by the trade-off between the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, we introduced fluoroketones containing different numbers of fluorinated groups (x = 0, 3 and 6) in the main chain of p-terphenyl piperidine because of the favorable hydrophobic properties of fluorinated groups. The results show that fluorinated AEMs can enhance OH - conductivity by building more aggregated hydrophilic channels while ensuring dimensional stability. The PTF6-QAPTP AEM with more fluorinated groups has the most excellent performance at 80 °C with an OH - conductivity of 142.7 mS cm -1 and a swelling ratio (SR) of only 4.55 %. Additionally, it exhibits good alkali durability, with the OH - conductivity and quaternary ammonium (QA) cation retaining at 93.45% and 92.6%, respectively, after immersion in a 2 M NaOH solution at 80 °C for 1200 h. In addition, the power density of the PTF6-QAPTP based single cell reaches 849 mW cm -2 when the current density is 1600 mA cm -2 . Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have emerged as a promising alternative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their adaptability to low-cost stack components and non-noble-metals catalysts. However, the poor alkaline resistance and low OH - conductivity of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have impeded the large-scale implementation of AEMFCs. Herein, the preparation of a new type of AEMs with crown ether macrocycles in their main chains via a one-pot superacid catalyzed reaction was reported. The study aimed to examine the influence of crown ether cavity size on the phase separation structure, ionic conductivity and alkali resistance of anion exchange membranes. Attributed to the self-assembly of crown ethers, the poly (crown ether) (PCE) AEMs with dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether (QAPCE-18-6) exhibit an obvious phase separated structure and a maximum OH - conductivity of 122.5 mS cm -1 at 80 °C (ionic exchange capacity is 1.51 meq g -1 ). QAPCE-18-6 shows a good alkali resistance with the OH - conductivity retention of 94.5% albeit being treated in a harsh alkali condition. Poly(aryl piperidinium) (PAP) anion exchange membranes (AEMs) furnish an important avenue for the commercialization of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), but their ionic conductivity and alkali resistance still need to be improved. Here, we report the synthesis of PAP AEMs with a branched structure by the acid-catalyzed reaction and compare them with the main-chain AEMs. The experimental results show that the branched AEMs have higher OH - conductivity and alkaline resistance than the poly(terphenyl piperidine) (PTPQ1) AEM. The alkaline stability and OH - conductivity of the AEMs were further improved by a flexible multi-cation crosslinker. The results show that the branched poly(p-terphenyl triphenylmethane 1-methyl piperidine) membrane crosslinked by multi-cation (PTTPQ4-40) shows an excellent OH - conductivity (155.3 mS cm -1 ) at 80 °C. The OH - conductivity of the PTTPQ4-40 membrane was maintained at 92.1% after soaking in 2 M NaOH for 1080 h at 80 °C. In addition, the peak power density (PPD) of the crosslinked PTTPQ4-40 membrane can reach 656.7 mW cm -2 . Compared to the PTPQ1 AEM, the PPD of the crosslinked PTTPQ4-40 AEM is increased by 38.6% in H 2 -O 2 . Root zone microbial structure is particularly complex in plants with rhizosheaths, and greater understanding of the rhizosheath may play an important role in the future development of sustainable agricultural practices. However, one important reason to focus study on rhizosheath microbial structure is that there is no definite method for rhizosheath separation. The aim of this study was to explore rhizosheath isolation methods and the diversity characteristics of microorganisms around the rhizosphere. In this study, we isolated the rhizosheath of Stipa grandis, a dominant species in desert steppe, and the microorganisms in the roots, root epidermis, rhizosheath and rhizosphere soil were extracted and sequenced by 16S rRNA and ITS. The alpha diversity index of bacteria in Stipa grandis rhizosphere soil was the greatest, followed by rhizosheath, and the alpha diversity index of endophytic bacteria in root system was the smallest. The alpha diversity index of fungi in the rhizosheath and rhizosphere soil were significantly higher than that in the root epidermis and root system. There were significant differences in bacterial community structure between the root epidermis, endophytic bacteria, rhizosheath and rhizosphere soil. Unlike bacterial community structure, the community structure of fungi in the root epidermis was similar that of endophytic fungi, but significantly different from those in rhizosheath and rhizosphere soil. This study demonstrated a feasible method for separating plant rhizosheath and root epidermis. We suggest that the root epidermis can act as the interface between the host plant root and the external soil environment. We will have to re-examine the biological and ecological significance of rhizosheath and microorganisms in rhizosheath, as well as the mechanism explaining the close relationship of the rhizosheath and the plant root epidermis. Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are a crucial constituent for alkaline fuel cells. As the core component of fuel cells, the low performance AEMs restrict the development and application of the fuel cells. Herein, the trade-off between the OH - conductivity and dimensional stability was solved by constructing AEMs with adequate OH - conductivity and satisfactory alkali resistance using Tröger's base (TB) poly (crown ether)s (PCEs) as the main chain, the embedded quaternary ammonium (QA) and Na + -functionalized crown ether units as the cationic group. Crown ether is an electron donator, and can capture Na + to form Na + -functionalized crown ether units to conveniently transfer OH - and significantly promote the alkaline stability of the AEMs. The influence of the Na + -functionalized crown ether units on the performance of AEMs was studied in detail. The PCEs based AEMs show an obvious hydrophobic-hydrophilic microphase separation. These features make them ideal platforms for the OH - conduction applications. As expected, the as-prepared PCEs-QA-100% (100% is the degree of cross-linking) AEM with an ionic exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.07 meq g -1 has a high OH - conductivity of 159 mS cm -1 at 80 °C. A novel two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate framework-graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite (ZIF-L@GO) is designed as an inorganic filler in sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). ZIF-L with unique leaf-like morphology is grown in-situ on the GO sheet in aqueous media at room temperature. The terminal imidazole linker in ZIF-L@GO and the -SO 3 H in SPEEK can form acid-base pairs in the membrane interface to produce low energy proton conduction highway. Benefiting from the unique structural advantage, the hybrid SP-ZIF-L@GO membranes displayed promoted physicochemical and electrochemical performances over the pure SPEEK. The SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 achieved a proton conductivity of 0.265 and 0.0364 S cm -1 at 70 °C-100% RH and 90 °C-40% RH, 1.76- and 6.24-fold higher than pure SPEEK, respectively. Meanwhile, a single cell based on SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 had an output power up to 652.82 mW cm -2 at 60 °C, 1.45 times higher than the pure SPEEK. In addition, the durability test was performed by holding open circuit voltage (OCV) for 24 h. The SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 provided better long-term stability than the pure SPEEK. Robotics in spinal surgery has significant potential benefits for both surgeons and patients, including reduced surgeon fatigue, improved screw accuracy, decreased radiation exposure, greater options for minimally invasive surgery, and less time required to train residents on techniques that can have steep learning curves. However, previous robotic systems have several drawbacks, which are addressed by the innovative ExcelsiusGPS TM robotic system. The robot is secured to the operating room floor, not the patient. It has a rigid external arm that facilitates direct transpedicular drilling and screw placement, without requiring K-wires. In addition, the ExcelsisuGPS TM has integrated neuronavigation, not present in other systems. It also has surveillance marker that immediately alerts the surgeon in the event of loss of registration, and a lateral force meter to alert the surgeon in the event of skiving. Here, we present the first spinal surgery performed with the assistance of this newly approved robot. The surgery was performed with excellent screw placement, minimal radiation exposure to the patient and surgeon, and the patient had a favorable outcome. We report the first operative case with the ExcelsisuGPS TM , and the first spine surgery utilizing real-time image-guided robotic assistance.

Background: The ExcelsiusGPS® (Globus Medical, Inc., Audubon, PA) is a next-generation spine surgery robotic system recently approved for use in the United States. The objective of the current study is to assess pedicle screw accuracy and clinical outcomes among two of the first operative cases utilizing the ExcelsiusGPS® robotic system and describe a novel metric to quantify screw deviation., Methods: Two patients who underwent lumbar fusion at a single institution with the ExcelsiusGPS® surgical robot were included. Pre-operative trajectory planning was performed from an intra-operative CT scan using the O-arm (Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis, MN). After robotic-assisted screw implantation, a post-operative CT scan was obtained to confirm ideal screw placement and accuracy with the planned trajectory. A novel pedicle screw accuracy algorithm was devised to measure screw tip/tail deviation distance and angular offset on axial and sagittal planes. Screw accuracy was concurrently determined by a blinded neuroradiologist using the traditional Gertzbein-Robbins method. Clinical variables such as symptomatology, operative data, and post-operative follow-up were also collected., Results: Eight pedicle screws were placed in two L4-L5 fusion cases. Mean screw tip deviation was 2.1 mm (range 0.8-5.2 mm), mean tail deviation was 3.2 mm (range 0.9-5.4 mm), and mean angular offset was 2.4 degrees (range 0.7-3.8 degrees). All eight screws were accurately placed based on the Gertzbein-Robbins scale (88% Grade A and 12% Grade B). There were no cases of screw revision or new post-operative deficit. The Excelsius GPS (Globus Medical, Inc.) was approved by the FDA in 2017. This novel robot allows for real-time intraoperative imaging, registration, and direct screw insertion through a rigid external arm-without the need for interspinous clamps or K-wires. The authors present one of the first operative cases utilizing the Excelsius GPS robotic system in spinal surgery. A 75-year-old man presented with severe lower back pain and left leg radiculopathy. He had previously undergone 3 decompressive surgeries from L3 to L5, with evidence of instability and loss of sagittal balance. Robotic assistance was utilized to perform a revision decompression with instrumented fusion from L3 to S1. The usage of robotic assistance in spinal surgery may be an invaluable resource in minimally invasive cases, minimizing the need for fluoroscopy, or in those with abnormal anatomical landmarks. Background: We used recombinant adeno-associated virus vector of adiponectin (AAV2/1-Acrp30) to study the effects of increased levels of adioponectin (by the administration of rAAV2/1-Acrp30) on arteriosclerosis, glucose and lipid metabolism in Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats with arteriosclerosis., Methods: Thirty GK rats with arteriosclerosis were divided into 3 equal groups: control group 1, control group 2 and the rAAV2/1-Acrp30-administered group. Saline, virus vector or rAAV2/1-Acrp30 (10 12 ng/ml) vector genomes administered to the rats in the corresponding group by intramuscular injection to the posterior limb by single administration, respectively. After 8 weeks, fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, serum insulin, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein were measured in each group, and the ultrastructure of the aorta was seen by light and electron microscopy., Results: Compared with control groups 1 and 2, in the rAAV2/1-Acrp30 group, there was a decrease in urine volume, fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein, and an increase in body weight and high-density lipoprotein (p< 0.05), while the level of serum insulin was not changed (p>0.05). Ultrastructure studies of the aorta showed that aortosclerosis in the rAAV2/1-Acrp30-administered group was less, and fewer lipid droplet vacuoles were seen in the vascular endothelial cytoplasm. Also various cell organelles and internal elastic lamina were seen, and there was no formation of lipid droplet and foam cells in the cytoplasm of the media of the smooth muscle., Conclusion: Adiponectin could improve blood glucose and lipid parameters and decrease atherosclerosis in the aorta of GK rats., (Copyright 2012, NMJI.)

The COMPASS (condensed-phase optimized molecular potentials for atomistic simulation studies) force field with two sets of partial atomic charges of water was used to simulate adsorption and diffusion behavior of water/methanol and water/ethanol mixtures in zeolite 4A at 298 K. The adsorption of alcohol first increased and then decreased with increasing pressure, whereas the adsorption of water increased progressively until an adsorption equilibrium was reached. Both the adsorbed molecules and the zeolite framework were treated as a fully flexible model in MD simulations. The simulation results show that the effects of the size and steric hindrance of the diffusing molecules on diffusivity are significant. The diffusivity of water, methanol, and ethanol molecules decreases by 1 order of magnitude in the order of water > methanol > ethanol. The diffusivity of water molecules depends on the mass fraction and the partial charges of water in zeolite 4A. The ethanol and methanol molecules have restricted motion through the alpha-cages, whereas the water molecules can easily pass through the alpha-cages window at low feed alcohol concentrations. And the extent of hydrogen bonding increased with increasing water concentration.

Bis(trialkylsilyl) precursor was used to modify polymer membranes for the first time. Novel organic-inorganic hybrid membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTEE) were prepared through a sol-gel method for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The permeability and selectivity of the membranes were improved simultaneously. The physicochemical properties of the hybrid membranes were investigated. With increasing BTEE content, the amorphous region in the hybrid membranes increased and became more compact. Phase separation took place in the hybrid membranes containing abundant BTEE, and silica particles distributed in the PVA matrix homogeneously. Compared to PVA membranes, the hybrid membranes exhibit high thermal stability and improved separation performances. Silica-hybrids reduced significantly the swelling of PVA membranes in an aqueous solution. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter of water with membranes chi13 increased with increasing BTEE content, whereas that of ethanol with membranes chi23 decreased. Diffusion behavior of water and ethanol through the membranes were analyzed using the Maxwell-Stefan equation. When BTEE content was below 6 wt%, diffusion coefficient of water D13 increased remarkably and that of ethanol D23 decreased slightly.

Chitosan-silica hybrid membranes (CSHMs) were prepared by cross-linking chitosan (CS) with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTEOS). The dynamic behaviors of the CS membrane and the CSHM were investigated in pervaporation (PV) of methanol/dimethyl carbonate (MeOH/DMC) mixtures. The membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), contact angle meter, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The transition state of PV processes were studied. During the PV processes, the amorphous region of the membranes increases and the contact angle between MeOH and the membrane decreases within a range of operating time and then remains almost constant implying a reconstruction occurred on the membrane surface. The silica is well distributed in the CSHM matrix and the thermal stability of the CSHM is enhanced. The time for a PV process to reach a steady state decreases with increasing MeOH concentration or feed temperature, and it is longer for the CSHM than the CS membrane under the same operating condition. Swelling experiments show that the degree of swelling (DS) is greatly depressed by cross-linking CS with APTEOS. Sorption data indicate that the selectivity of solubility and diffusion of the CSHM are greatly improved over the CS membrane. The CSHM presents superior separation behaviors over other membranes with a flux of 1265 g/(hm(2)) and separation factor of 30.1 in PV separation of 70 wt% MeOH in feed at 50 degrees C.
