Tomato is a model system for studying fleshy fruit development. After fertilization, cell division and expansion in the pericarp are crucial for fruit development and determine the final fruit size. TKN3 was found to be expressed in the tomato ovary wall/pericarp of zero to two days post-anthesis fruits as a KNOX I class member, but its function in fruit development was elusive. Here, we found that mutations of TKN3 by CRISPR/Cas9 caused fruit developmental defects, and fruit weight was dramatically reduced in the tkn3cr mutant. Histological observation of fruit pericarps revealed that mutation of TKN3 repressed cell expansion after fertilization, leading to flattened cells in the mesocarp and thereby thinner pericarps in red fruits. Moreover, tkn3cr mutants also displayed pleiotropic phenotypes including enlarged leaves and floral organs, indicating conserved functions in meristem maintenance and leaf development. Yeast two-hybrid and BiFC assays further showed that TKN3 could interact with Solyc10g086640 (a homolog of Arabidopsis PNY), which has a similar expression pattern as TKN3. Genome-wide identification of genes regulated by TKN3 indicated that the auxin and gibberellin (GA) pathways might mediate the function of TKN3. Our works revealed that TKN3 controls cell expansion in pericarps, and provides new insights into the roles of KNOX proteins in fruit development.

To tackle the efficiency droop, we employed an epitaxial structure engineering approach and utilized SimuLED software to thoroughly investigate the influence of the quantum barrier (QB) thickness on the performance of Micro-LEDs, and delve into the corresponding carrier transport behavior. The results demonstrate that the effect of QB thickness on the performance of Micro-LEDs is closely related to injection current density. Within the current density range of 0–30 A/cm2, a thicker QB layer leads to a higher internal quantum efficiency (IQE) for Micro-LEDs. Conversely, when the current density is in the range of 30–100 A/cm2, employing a thinner QB layer in the LED structure can yield higher IQE values. In addition, this work suggests that tunneling effects and Quantum Confined Stark Effect (QCSE) dominate at different current densities, resulting in an opposite dependency of IQE on QB thickness. Furthermore, our findings indicate that adjusting QB thickness can significantly affect both the peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) and peak current density of Micro-LEDs.

Abstract Introduction Ovarian adenomyoma is a rare gynecological tumor with a high misdiagnosis rate, leading many patients to undergo unnecessary surgeries that may affect fertility. Menstrual abdominal pain is the most common symptom, and auxiliary examinations often cannot clarify its nature. It often relies on intraoperative diagnosis, and surgical resection can achieve good therapeutic effects. Case presentation A 50-year-old woman presented with lower abdominal pain during her menstrual period for the past two months. She had a previous medical history of uterine adenomyomectomy, ovarian cystectomy, and a cesarean section. Ultrasound revealed a 5.7 × 3.8 × 4.3 cm mass on the posterior wall of the uterus, a 9.9 × 5.6 × 8.2 cm hypoechoic mass in the right posterior part of the uterus, and a 2.8 × 2.2 × 2.7 cm anechoic mass in the left ovary. CA125 (Carbohydrate antigen 125) 191.80U/ml (0–30). MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) imaging confirmed a 7.9 × 6.2 × 7.2 cm fibroid on the right posterior wall of the uterus. Consider partial degeneration of multiple uterine fibroids and benign cystic degeneration in the lower left abdomen. Surgical resection was performed smoothly, and the diagnosis was confirmed by postoperative pathology. Conclusion Ovarian adenomyoma is a rare benign gynecologic tumour with a high rate of misdiagnosis. When a patient presents with recent lower abdominal pain or dysmenorrhea, a history of endometriosis or myomectomy, and MRI findings showing irregular bleeding patterns in a pelvic mass, the possibility of extrauterine adenomyosis should be considered. Minimally invasive treatment options, such as single-port laparoscopy or vaginal dissection, may offer advantages, but caution should be exercised due to the potential for malignant tumors. Preserving fertility is something worth exploring. We hope to provide warnings to more gynaecologists and reduce misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment.

Abstract Background Fungal spondylitis often occurs in patients with immune dysfunction, and its diagnosis and treatment pose certain challenges. However, even in immunocompromised patients, Aspergillus spondylitis remains rare. This case reports the diagnostic and therapeutic experience of fungal spondylitis in a patient with consolidated cirrhosis and no significant immune impairment. Case presentation A 45-year-old agricultural worker had chest and back pain for 6 months. The patient’s pain was a persistent dull ache that worsened with chronic coughing and postural changes and decreased when he was laying down. Based on the patient’s clinical presentation, biochemical tests and imaging, considered possible spinal tuberculosis. Empirical anti-tuberculosis treatment was not successful. Due to the failure of medication and the formation of an epidural abscess, the decision was made to proceed with surgical treatment. Intraoperative tissue specimens were subjected to high throughput testing for culture, tuberculosis gene X-pert and high-throughput detection of macro-gene infectious agents. It was confirmed that the spinal infection was caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. Tuberculosis medication was ceased and antifungal therapy with voriconazole was started. Three months after surgery, the patient recovered well with no fever or pain. Discussion and conclusion In summary, in addition to patients with low immune function who should be evaluated for fungal spondylitis, patients with infectious diseases of the spine who are immunocompetent but have comorbid cirrhosis should be evaluated when treatment fails. If the diagnosis cannot be made by conventional or unconventional methods, surgical methods should be used in a timely manner for diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disease with high morbidity and mortality. Notably, the pathogenesis and progression of COPD are related to lung infection, inflammatory response, and biological dysfunction in alveolar epithelial cells. Studies also found that periodontitis is an independent risk factor for COPD. The inhalation of periodontal pathogens into the respiratory system is the most common method for periodontal pathogens to promote the development of COPD. Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), the keystone pathogen in periodontitis, has been found to migrate to the lungs, triggering inflammatory reactions and causing decreased lung function. However, the impact of P. gingivalis infection on the biological function of alveolar epithelial cells remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of P. gingivalis infection on the biological functions of alveolar epithelial cells. Methods Mouse alveolar epithelial cells (MLE-12) were co-cultured with P. gingivalis and treated with autophagy inhibitor chloroquine (CQ) or LC3 siRNA in vitro. MTT assay and EdU staining were used to detect cell viability, and the TUNEL assay kit and Annexin V-FITC/PI method were used to detect cell apoptosis. Western blot was used to detect autophagic markers LC3 and P62, and mRFP-GFP-LC3 was used to observe autophagic flux. Results P. gingivalis inhibited the viability of alveolar epithelial cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. P. gingivalis also promoted autophagy and apoptosis of alveolar epithelial cells in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, we found that inhibiting autophagy using CQ or silencing LC3 with siRNA significantly reduced cell apoptosis and viability damage induced by P. gingivalis. Thus, these data indicated the synergistic effect of autophagy in P. gingivalis-induced biological dysfunction of alveolar epithelial cells. Conclusion P. gingivalis infection can cause biological dysfunction of alveolar epithelial cells, manifested as decreased cell viability, increased autophagy and apoptosis. Notably, the up-regulation of autophagy induced by P. gingivalis plays a synergistic role in this dysfunction.

Abstract Background Post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal death worldwide. However, the effect of blood transfusion in patients undergoing cesarean section remains unclear. Materials and methods The analysis was based on the retrospective evaluation of the pre- and post-operative data for 1231 patients who underwent a cesarean section at our hospital between January 2016 and June 2020. Patients were classified into the blood transfusion group (BT) and the no blood transfusion group (NBT) based on their intra-operative blood transfusion status. Results After propensity score matching, 322 patients were included in both groups and between-group differences in length of hospital stay (LOS), perioperative systemic inflammation indicators, and post-operative complications were evaluated. The LOS was longer in the BT (median, 6.6 days) than the NBT (median, 4.2 days) group (P = 0.026). The post-operative complication rate was higher for the BT than NBT group, as follows: vomiting, 3.2% vs. 4.9%, P = 0.032; fever, 5.41% vs. 2.24%, P = 0.032; wound complications, 15.44% vs. 10.45%, P = 0.028; and intestinal obstructions, 5.88% vs. 2.75%, P = 0.034. Systemic inflammation indicators increased significantly, from the pre-operative baseline, for both groups at post-operative day (POD) 1 and POD3. On multivariate analysis, intra-operative blood transfusion was associated with a longer LOS (hazard ratio, 1.52; 95% confidence interval, 1.07–2.25). Conclusion Intraoperative blood transfusion for cesarean section was associated with increased levels of systemic inflammation indicators, higher post-operative complication rates, and prolonged hospital stay.

Abstract Background Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) planning optimization involves iterative adjustment of numerous parameters, and hence requires repeatedly dose recalculation. In this study, we used the deep learning method to develop a fast and accurate dose calculation method for VMAT. Methods The classical 3D UNet was adopted and trained to learn the physics principle of dose calculation. The inputs included the projected fluence map (FM), computed tomography (CT) images, the radiological depth and the source-to-voxel distance (SVD). The projected FM was generated by projecting the accumulated FM between two consecutive control points (CPs) onto the patient’s anatomy. The accumulated FM was calculated by simulating the movement of the multi-leaf collimator (MLC) from one CP to the next. The dose, calculated by the treatment planning system (TPS), was used as ground truth. 51 head and neck VMAT plans were used, with 43, 1 and 7 cases as training, validation, and testing datasets, respectively. Correspondingly, 7182, 180 and 1260 CP samples were included in the training, validation, and testing datasets. Results This presented method was evaluated by comparing the derived dose distribution to the TPS calculated dose distribution. The dose profiles coincided for both the single CP and the entire plan (summation of all CPs). But the network derived dose was smoother than the TPS calculated dose. Gamma analysis was performed between the network derived dose and the TPS calculated dose. The average gamma pass rate was 96.56%, 98.75%, 98.03% and 99.30% under the criteria of 2% (tolerance) -2 mm (distance to agreement, DTA). 2%-3 mm, 3%-2 mm and 3%-3 mm. No significant difference was observed on the critical indices including the max, mean dose, and the relative volume covered by the 2000 cGy, 4000 cGy and the prescription dose. For one CP, the average computational time of the network and TPS was 0.09s and 0.53s. And for one patient, the average time was 16.51s and 95.60s. Conclusion The dose distribution derived by the network showed good agreement with the TPS calculated dose distribution. The computational time was reduced to approximate one-sixth of its original duration. Therefore the presented deep learning-based dose calculation method has the potential to be used for planning optimization.

Abstract Background Grazing livestock emits methane through rumen intestinal activity, however, its impact on plant growth in grassland while grazing still has not been explored in detail. Therefore, the study examined the effects of methane pulse spray (MPS), according to grazing intensity, at four grazing intensities (0, 3.6, 5.0, and 6.5 sheep·hm− 2 yr− 1) on seed germination and seedling growth of common vetch (Vicia sativa), while two irrigation rates (35 and 53 ml d− 1) were employed to simulate the precipitation. Results The study revealed significant interactions between MPS and irrigation rate on seed germination and seedling growth parameters. Under moderate MPS intensities (0.74 and 1.04 mol m− 2), seed germination rate, potential, index, and vigor index improved, especially at higher irrigation rates (53 ml d− 1). Conversely, excessive MPS (1.33 mol m− 2) inhibited particularly at the germination rate and growth,. The seedling growth dynamics fitted a logistic model, with MPS advancing the rapid growth phase and increasing maximum growth rates. Conclusions This study demonstrates that low to moderate levels of MPS from ruminants can promote seed germination and seedling growth of common vetch, while excessive MPS inhibits these processes. Irrigation enhances plant sensitivity to MPS, with wetter conditions (620 mm yr− 1) facilitating a more pronounced response. The findings introduce a new model elucidating plant responses to external perturbations, which can inform grazing management strategies in diverse ecosystems. In wetter regions, moderate grazing intensities may leverage MPS benefits, while arid regions require careful grazing regulation to maintain grassland-livestock balance.

Abstract Corticosteroids have always been recommended for severe cases of COVID-19. However, the efficacy of treatment with corticosteroids for COVID-19 during the SARS-CoV-2 omicron outbreak in China has not been reported. Clinical data from 406 patients hospitalized for severe/critical COVID-19 from December 2022 to January 2023 at six hospitals in Chongqing were retrospectively analyzed. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at 28 days in the groups with and without corticosteroids treatment after propensity score matching (PSM). Secondary outcomes were to compare in-hospital mortality and length of survival time with corticosteroids and those without corticosteroids. This study included 406 patients with severe or critical COVID-19, divided into the corticosteroids group (231, 56.9%) and non-corticosteroids group (175, 43.1%). After PSM, the use of corticosteroids did not reduce all-cause mortality at 28 days (42.5% vs. 39.1%). Univariate analysis showed that corticosteroids were not associated with improved all-cause mortality at 28 days [hazard ratio (HR), 1.019; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.639–1.623; p = 0.938]. Multivariate analysis showed similar results (HR, 1.047; 95% CI, 0.633–1.732; p = 0.858). Among non-survivors, the survival time was significantly larger in those who received corticosteroids compared with the non-corticosteroid users [median 13 (IQR 6.5–15.5) vs. 6 (4-11.25), p = 0.007]. The use of systemic corticosteroids in severe/critical COVID-19 may provide certain potential survival benefits but does not improve prognosis.

The sea cucumber is an invertebrate with significant economic value and is extensively consumed as a tonic food in Asian countries due to its high nutritional value. Sea cucumber polysaccharides, important bioactive substances found in sea cucumbers, exhibit diverse biological activities, including anticoagulant, antitumor, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and insulin resistance-alleviating activities. Sea cucumber polysaccharides include fucosylated chondroitin sulfate (FCS) and fucoidan (FUC). FCS exists in the body wall of sea cucumbers and has a backbone structure similar to that of mammalian chondroitin sulfate. Compared with sea cucumber FCS, sea cucumber FUC has a simpler chemical structure and is a linear polysaccharide consisting of only α-L-fucose and sulfate groups. It has been shown that the structural properties of sea cucumber polysaccharides (molecular mass, sulfated fucose branches, sulfate group content and sulfation patterns) have a large influence on their biological activities. At present, there are many studies on the biological activities of sea cucumber polysaccharides, but systematic research and analysis on their chemical structures are still lacking. This review focuses on outlining the chemical structures, biological activities, action mechanisms and structure-activity relationship of sea cucumber polysaccharides, with a view to providing a reference for further research and application of sea cucumber polysaccharides.

Abstract Grounded Situation Recognition (GSR) aims to generate structured image descriptions. For a given image, GSR needs to identify the key verb, the nouns corresponding to roles, and their bounding-box groundings. However, current GSR research demands numerous meticulously labeled images, which are labor-intensive and time-consuming, making it costly to expand detection categories. Our study enhances model accuracy in detecting and localizing under data scarcity, reducing dependency on large datasets and paving the way for broader detection capabilities. In this paper, we propose the Grounded Situation Recognition under Data Scarcity (GSRDS) model, which uses the CoFormer model as the baseline and optimizes three subtasks: image feature extraction, verb classification, and bounding-box localization, to better adapt to data-scarce scenarios. Specifically, we replace ResNet50 with EfficientNetV2-M for advanced image feature extraction. Additionally, we introduce the Transformer Combined with CLIP for Verb Classification (TCCV) module, utilizing features extracted by CLIP’s image encoder to enhance verb classification accuracy. Furthermore, we design the Multi-source Verb-Role Queries (Multi-VR Queries) and the Dual Parallel Decoders (DPD) modules to improve the accuracy of bounding-box localization. Through extensive comparative experiments and ablation studies, we demonstrate that our method achieves higher accuracy than mainstream approaches in data-scarce scenarios. The translation of A.A. Shtukin’s poem “The Song of the Bride”, which is part of the collection of ancient Chinese hymns and songs “Shijing”, is being considered. The relevance of the study is determined by the interest of Chinese researchers in the quality of translations of Chinese poetry into European languages, particularly Russian. There is noted interest from both Chinese and Russian researchers in the translation of the book “Shijing”, as it varies depending on the perception of foreign cultures. The features of A.A. Shtukin’s translation of the poem “The Song of the Bride” are highlighted in terms of the images he created and the linguistic specifics. It is pointed out that Shtukin’s translation of the poems from “Shijing” is recognized as one of the best. The analysis of the translation revealed the following characteristics: the preservation of the original work’s color through botanical metaphors, sound, and structural organization of the text. Some shortcomings in conveying the atmosphere of ancient Chinese lyricism from the perspective of native Chinese speakers who also speak Russian were also identified; the translation differs from the original in that it insufficiently conveys the atmosphere of ancient Chinese lyricism, which can be easily explained by the differences in worldviews among speakers of different languages.

The inhibition of Mo segregation and phase precipitation is vital for improving the hot workability and corrosion resistance of superaustentic stainless steels (SASS). The boron non-equilibrium segregation of S31254 SASS was implemented through solid solution, air cooling, and diffusion at low-temperature treatment (SADT). The precipitation process and intergranular corrosion (IGC) of S31254 SASS with various boron distributions were researched at a sensitive temperature. The second phases were observed and identified by SEM and TEM. IGC susceptibility was evaluated by double-loop potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) measurements. The SADT treatment promoted more segregation of B at the grain boundary, leading to lower amounts of grain boundary precipitation before aging for 6 h. The decrease of σ phases in B-regulated samples enhances the IGC resistance, compared with the samples without B addition specimens.

Abstract Background The vast majority of pancreatic cancers have been shown to be insensitive to single-agent immunotherapy. Exploring the mechanisms of immune resistance and implementing combination therapeutic strategies are crucial for PDAC patients to derive benefits from immunotherapy. Deletion of BAP1 occurs in approximately 27% of PDAC patients and is significantly correlated with poor prognosis, but the mechanism how BAP1-deletion compromises survival of patients with PDAC remain a puzzle. Methods Bap1 knock-out KPC (KrasG12D/+; LSLTrp53R172H/+; Pdx-1-Cre) mice and control KPC mice, syngeneic xenograft models were applied to analysis the correlation between BAP1 and immune therapy response in PDAC. Immunoprecipitation, RT-qPCR, luciferase and transcriptome analysis were combined to revealing potential mechanisms. Syngeneic xenograft models and flow cytometry were constructed to examine the efficacy of the inhibitor of SIRT1 and its synergistic effect with anti-PD-1 therapy. Result The deletion of BAP1 contributes to the resistance to immunotherapy in PDAC, which is attributable to BAP1’s suppression of the transcriptional activity of HSF1. Specifically, BAP1 competes with SIRT1 for binding to the K80 acetylated HSF1. The BAP1-HSF1 interaction preserves the acetylation of HSF1-K80 and promotes HSF1-HSP70 interaction, facilitating HSF1 oligomerization and detachment from the chromatin. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the targeted inhibition of SIRT1 reverses the immune insensitivity in BAP1 deficient PDAC mouse model. Conclusion Our study elucidates an unrevealed mechanism by which BAP1 regulates immune therapy response in PDAC via HSF1 inhibition, and providing promising therapeutic strategies to address immune insensitivity in BAP1-deficient PDAC.

Abstract Background Many complications may occur after placement of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP shunt) for hydrocephalus, and delayed shunt insufficiency (DSI) is among the most common. It is often caused by abdominal adhesions, which increases the difficulty of diagnosis. This study aimed to explore the clinical value of dynamic plain abdominal radiography (DPAR) as a simple diagnostic method for patients with DSI due to terminal adhesion of the peritoneal shunt after VP surgery. Methods A total of 30 patients with high suspicion of DSI due to abdominal adhesions after VP surgery were included. DPAR was used for prospective assessment. The interval between the first and second PAR was 4–6 h before surgery. If two plain abdominal radiography at different times indicated that the end of the shunt tube in the abdominal segment was fixed, it was diagnosed as DSI due to adhesion of the shunt tube at the abdominal end. The peritoneal end of the shunt tube was surgically repositioned. Postoperative DPAR was repeated to evaluate the distance of the shunt outlet within the abdominal segment. Results All cases showed clinical symptoms or imaging findings of shunt insufficiency. The diagnostic accuracy of DPAR was 96.67% (29/30). The end of the shunt tube in the abdominal segment of the preoperative group was fixed with abdominal plain film twice with a mean difference of 1.74 ± 1.18 cm. The mean postoperative change in the position of the end of the shunt tube in the abdominal section was 9.36 ± 2.64 cm, showing a significant difference compared with the preoperative group (P

Abstract Purpose In this study, we aim to explore the efficacy of paxlovid on reducing mortality of COVID-19 patients in clinical setting, especially whether paxlovid modifies the risk of death in these severe and critical patients. Methods Our retrospective cohort study was conducted on the medical records of patients, consecutively admitted for COVID-19 to five hospitals in Chongqing, China from Dec 8, 2022 to Jan 20, 2023. Based on whether patients received paxlovid during their hospitalization, patients were grouped as paxlovid group and non-paxlovid group. We used 1:1 ratio propensity score matching (PSM) in our study to adjust for confounding factors and differences between groups. Statistical analysis were performed by SPSS 23.0. The differences in 28-day mortality between these two groups and its influencing factors were the main results we focused on. Results There were 1018 patients included in our study cohort. With 1:1 ratio PSM, each of the paxlovid group and non-paxlovid group included 237 patients. The results showed that patients using paxlovid have a lower 28-day mortality in overall population either before PSM (OR 0.594, 95% CI 0.385–0.917, p = 0.019) or after PSM (OR 0.458, 95% CI 0.272–0.774, p = 0.003) with multivariable adjusted logistic regression models. Meanwhile, in severe subgroup, it showed similar findings.With paxlovid treatment, it showed a significantly lower 28-day mortality in severe subgroup both before PSM (28% vs.41%, p = 0.008) and after PSM (19% vs.32%, p = 0.007). Conclusion Paxlovid can significantly reduce the risk of 28-day mortality in overall population and severe subgroup patients.This study distinguished the severe subgroup patients with COVID-19 who benefit more from paxlovid treatment.

The assembly process information of wind turbines is usually scattered in process documents consisting of multi-modal information, such as 3D models, natural texts, and images. Therefore, the cost of maintaining data and extracting process knowledge is high while the efficiency is low. To solve this problem, a multi-modal knowledge graph-based modeling method for the assembly process knowledge of wind turbines is proposed with multi-source heterogeneous data. First, the concepts in multi-modal process knowledge graph of wind turbine (MPKG-WT) are defined by analyzing the process characteristics of wind turbines to complete the construction of ontology. Then, based on the characteristics of multi-source heterogeneous data and multi-modal information, data analysis, knowledge extraction, and semantic similarity calculation are leveraged to realize the automatic instantiation of the graph. Finally, taking the process data of a wind turbine enterprise as an example, MPKG-WT is constructed and verified by implementing an auxiliary system for process design. The results show that MPKG-WT is more informative than the single-modal graph, and the data in different modals can complement each other, which leads to significant improvements in the efficiency of process design.

This work analyses how the different U-space service providers (USSPs) managing a shared airspace volume will impact on the other’s performance. The paper demonstrates how the various strategic planning USSPs capabilities, ranging from procedures and policies, trajectory representation, as well as the deconflicting strategies, impact on the use of this common resource in terms of effective airspace capacity. The paper brings to practice the concept of Reasonable Time to React by proposing a planning timeline with common milestones for the implementation of the required authorization procedures prior to the flight. The paper analyses how these milestones impact on the effective airspace capacity. Also, the First-Come First-Served planning policy is compared with respect to a more efficient batch planning policy, where flight plan batches are processed to mitigate the potential conflicts existing at the strategic phase. Furthermore, the paper discusses how the capabilities supported by the USSP to represent the trajectory and its associated uncertainty will be also key to optimize the use the airspace. Based on a CORUS-XUAM VLD scenario, a simulation analysis will assess how the USSPs’ capabilities to manage flight planning activities impact on the effective occupation of airspace, jeopardizing in some cases not just the own performance but also that of other airspace users.

HfC-SiC modified C/C composites containing in situ formed Si-HfC-HfSi2 ablation resistant layer and SiC oxidation resistant layer were successfully prepared by reactive melt infiltration (RMI) combined with gaseous silicon infiltration (GSI). A comparative study was conducted on the anti-oxidation and anti-ablation performance of the C/C-HfC-SiC composites with GSI (noted as RG-CHS) and without GSI (noted as R-CHS). After oxidation at 1,500 °C for 200 min, the oxide film of RG-CHS remained intact. The mass and linear ablation rates decreased from 1.31 mg/s and 7.36 μm/s to 0.12 mg/s and −0.22 μm/s after GSI process, respectively. The introduction of low melting point phases and reducing surface defects can improve the high temperature oxidation resistance and plasma ablation resistance of the composites.

Molecular sieves possess unique properties and have emerged as the predominant catalysts with shape selectivity in the petrochemical industry because of their well-defined pore architectures. However, the existence of a constrained pore surroundings of molecular sieves can limit intracrystalline diffusion, leading to underutilization of the active volume of the molecular sieve or rapid catalysts deactivation during catalytic processes. Moreover, the mechanism of adsorption and diffusion of molecules inside molecular sieves is crucial for the optimization and advancement of catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis. Due to the complexity of the diffusion process in molecular sieve materials, it is very necessary to develop characterization methods that are more sensitive and informative for studying the adsorption and diffusion of guests inside pores. Advancements in characterization techniques and theoretical calculations have led to a more profound comprehension of the adsorption and diffusion properties of molecular sieves at the microscopic scale. This article mainly summarizes the research progress of molecular adsorption and diffusion in molecular sieve materials using advanced 129Xe NMR, hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe NMR, and pulsed-field gradient (PFG) NMR techniques in recent years and focuses on the principles of these techniques and applicability of the relationship of adsorption-diffusion using these techniques within several molecular sieve systems. Moreover, the effects of the topology and pore connectivity of molecular sieves on the adsorption and diffusion of guest molecules as well as the effects of intracrystalline diffusion on catalytic reactions are discussed.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) and cells are crucial components of natural tissue microenvironments, and they both demonstrate dynamic mechanical properties, particularly viscoelastic behaviors, when exposed to external stress or strain over time. The capacity to modify the mechanical properties of cells and ECM is crucial for gaining insight into the development, physiology, and pathophysiology of living organisms. As an illustration, researchers have developed hydrogels with diverse compositions to mimic the properties of the native ECM and use them as substrates for cell culture. The behavior of cultured cells can be regulated by modifying the viscoelasticity of hydrogels. Moreover, there is widespread interest across disciplines in accurately measuring the mechanical properties of cells and the surrounding ECM, as well as exploring the interactive relationship between these components. Nevertheless, the lack of standardized experimental methods, conditions, and other variables has hindered systematic comparisons and summaries of research findings on ECM and cell viscoelasticity. In this review, we delve into the origins of ECM and cell viscoelasticity, examine recently developed methods for measuring ECM and cell viscoelasticity, and summarize the potential interactions between cell and ECM viscoelasticity. Recent research has shown that both ECM and cell viscoelasticity experience alterations during in vivo pathogenesis, indicating the potential use of tailored viscoelastic ECM and cells in regenerative medicine.

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) deliver potential applications in electrochromism and energy storage. However, the poor intrinsic conductivity of MOFs in electrolytes seriously hampers the development of the above‐mentioned electrochemical applications, especially in one MOF electrode. Herein, a new Ni‐based MOF (denoted Ni‐DPNDI) is proposed with enhanced conductivity by π‐delocalized DPNDI connectors. Predictably, the obtained Ni‐DPNDI MOF achieves a conductivity of up to 4.63 S∙m−1 at 300 K. Profiting from its unique electronic structure, the Ni‐DPNDI MOF delivers excellent electrochromic and energy storage performance with a great optical modulation (60.8%), a fast switching speed (tc = 7.9 s and tb = 6.4 s), a moderate specific capacitance (25.3 mAh·g−1) and good cycle stability over 2000 times. Meanwhile, energy storage capacity is visual by the coloration states of Ni‐DPNDI film. As a proof of the potential application, a large‐area (100 cm2) electrochromic energy storage smart window is further designed and displayed. The strategy provides an interesting alternative to porous multifunctional materials for the new generation of electronic devices with diverse applications.

Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant, has been extensively studied for its potential therapeutic effects on various central nervous system (CNS) disorders, including epilepsy, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, and stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the pharmacological mechanisms of CBD have not been fully elucidated due to the complexity of their targets. In this study, we reported that the transient receptor potential canonical 4 (TRPC4) channel, a calcium-permeable, non-selective cation channel, could be inhibited by CBD. TRPC4 is highly abundant in the central nervous system and plays a critical role in regulating axonal regeneration, neurotransmitter release, and neuronal network activity. Here, we used whole-cell electrophysiology and intracellular calcium measurements to identify the inhibitory effects of CBD on TRPC4, in which CBD was found to inhibit TRPC4 channel with an IC50 value of 1.52 μM TRPC4 channels function as receptor-operated channels (ROC) and could be activated by epinephrine (EP) via G proteins. We show that CBD can inhibit EP-evoked TRPC4 current in vitro and EP-evoked neuronal excitability in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). These results are consistent with the action of TRPC4-specific inhibitor Pico145, suggesting that TRPC4 works as a functional ionotropic receptor of CBD. This study identified TRPC4 as a novel target for CBD in the CNS and suggested that CBD could reduce the pyramidal neuron excitability by inhibiting TRPC4-containing channels in the mPFC.

Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to assess whether ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) ion irradiations can induce the FLASH effect in animal models. Methods: A comprehensive search of the Web of Science, PubMed, and EMBASE databases was conducted from inception until March 20, 2023, to identify studies involving irradiated animals subjected to proton or carbon ion beams at varying dose rates. The research content should include various indicators that can reflect the effect and safety of radiation, such as survival, normal tissue toxicity, inflammatory response, tumor volume, etc Results: Compared to conventional dose rate (CONV) ion irradiations, UHDR ion irradiations can significantly improve mouse survival (HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.78, I 2 = 0%) and maintain comparable tumor control. There was no significant impact of different dose rates on the survival of zebrafish embryos (SMD 0.11, 95% CI −0.31 to 0.53, I 2 = 85%). Subgroup analysis showed that radiation dose was an important factor affecting the survival of zebrafish embryos. Achieving normal tissue sparing may require higher radiation dose under UHD.In mouse and zebrafish embryo models, normal tissue sparing did not always occur after UHDR ion irradiations. In addition, only a limited number of cytokines (CXCL1, IL-6, GM-CSF, G-CSF, HMGB1, and TGF-β) and immune cells (microglia and myeloid cells) showed differences at different dose rates. Conclusions: UHDR ion irradiation can achieve FLASH effect, but the reproducibility of normal tissue sparing remains a challenge. Compared to CONV irradiation, UHDR ion irradiations demonstrated equivalent or even superior tumor control.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is one of the major subtypes of heart failure (HF) and no effective treatments for this common disease exist to date. Cardiac fibrosis is central to the pathology of HF and a potential avenue for the treatment of HFpEF. To explore key fibrosis‐related genes and pathways in the pathophysiological process of HFpEF, a mouse model of HFpEF was constructed. The relevant gene expression profiles were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, and single‐sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA) was performed targeting fibrosis‐related pathways to explore differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in healthy control and HFpEF heart tissues with cross‐tabulation analysis of fibrosis‐related genes. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed on the identified fibrosis‐related genes. The two most significant DEGs were selected, and further validation was conducted in HFpEF mice. The results indicated that myocardial fibrosis was significantly upregulated in HFpEF mice compared to healthy controls, while the ssGSEA results revealed significant differences in the enrichment of nine fibrosis‐related pathways in HFpEF myocardial tissue, with 112 out of 798 DEGs being related to fibrosis. The in vivo results demonstrated that expression levels of resistin‐like molecule gamma (Relmg) and adenylate cyclase 1 (Adcy1) in the heart tissues of HFpEF mice were significantly higher and lower, respectively, compared to healthy controls. Taken together, these results suggest that Relmg and Acdy1 as well as the fibrosis process may be potential targets for HFpEF treatment.

Abstract Background Esophagogastric junction cancer (EJC) refers to malignant tumors that develop at the junction between the stomach and the esophagus. TUSC1 is a recently identified tumor suppressor gene known for its involvement in various types of cancer. The objective of this investigation was to elucidate the regulatory influence of DNA methylation on TUSC1 expression and its role in the progression of EJC. Methods Bioinformatics software was utilized to analyze the expression of TUSC1, enriched pathways, and highly methylated sites in the promoter region. TUSC1 expression in EJC was assessed using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot (WB), and immunohistochemistry. Methylation-specific PCR was employed to detect the methylation level of TUSC1. To analyze the effects of TUSC1 and 5-AZA-2 on tumor cell proliferation, migration, invasion, cell cycle, and apoptosis, several assays including CCK-8, colony formation, transwell, and flow cytometry were conducted. The expression of MDM2 was assessed using qRT-PCR and WB. WB detected the expression of p53, and p-p53, markers for EJC cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and apoptosis. The role of TUSC1 in tumor occurrence in vivo was examined using a xenograft mouse model. Results TUSC1 expression was significantly downregulated in EJC. Overexpression of TUSC1 and treatment with 5-AZA-2 inhibited the malignant progression of EJC cells. In EJC, low methylation levels promoted the expression of TUSC1. Upregulation of TUSC1 suppressed the expression of MDM2 and activated the p53 signaling pathway. Inactivation of this pathway attenuated the inhibitory effect of TUSC1 overexpression on EJC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and other behaviors. Animal experiments demonstrated that TUSC1 overexpression inhibited EJC tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. Conclusion TUSC1 was commonly downregulated in EJC and regulated by methylation. It repressed the malignant progression of EJC tumors by mediating the p53 pathway, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic target for EJC.

Abstract Background Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that periodontitis is an independent risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the mechanism underlying the association between these two diseases remains unclear. The lung microbiota shares similarities with the oral microbiota, and there is growing evidence to suggest that the lung microbiome could play a role in the pathogenesis of COPD. This study aimed to investigate whether periodontal pathogens could contribute to the pathogenesis of COPD in a mouse model. Methods We established mouse models with oral infection by typical periodontal pathogens, porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg group) or fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn group), over a three-month period. Mice that did not receive oral infection were set as the control group (C group). We assessed the level of alveolar bone resorption, lung function, and histological changes in the lungs of the mice. Additionally, we measured the levels of inflammatory factors and tissue damage associated factors in the lung tissues. Results Lung function indices, including airway resistance, peak inspiratory/expiratory flow and expiratory flow-50%, were significantly reduced in the Fn group compared to the C group. Additionally, histological examination revealed an increased number of inflammatory cells and bullae formation in the lung tissue sections of the Fn group. Meanwhile, levels of inflammatory factors such as IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α, as well as tissue damage associated factors like matrix metalloproteinase-8 and neutrophil elastase, were significantly elevated in the lung tissue of the Fn group in comparison to the C group. The Pg group also showed similar but milder lung changes compared to the Fn group. Pg or Fn could be detected in the lungs of both oral infected groups. Conclusion The results indicated that oral periodontal pathogens infection could induce COPD-like lung changes in mice, and they may play a biological role in the association between periodontitis and COPD.

Abstract Zika virus (ZIKV) infection may lead to severe neurological consequences, including seizures, and early infancy death. However, the involved mechanisms are still largely unknown. TRPC channels play an important role in regulating nervous system excitability and are implicated in seizure development. We investigated whether TRPCs might be involved in the pathogenesis of ZIKV infection. We found that ZIKV infection increases TRPC4 expression in host cells via the interaction between the ZIKV-NS3 protein and CaMKII, enhancing TRPC4-mediated calcium influx. Pharmacological inhibition of CaMKII decreased both pCREB and TRPC4 protein levels, whereas the suppression of either TRPC4 or CaMKII improved the survival rate of ZIKV-infected cells and reduced viral protein production, likely by impeding the replication phase of the viral life cycle. TRPC4 or CaMKII inhibitors also reduced seizures and increased the survival of ZIKV-infected neonatal mice and blocked the spread of ZIKV in brain organoids derived from human-induced pluripotent stem cells. These findings suggest that targeting CaMKII or TRPC4 may offer a promising approach for developing novel anti-ZIKV therapies, capable of preventing ZIKV-associated seizures and death.

Abstract In the wave of research on autonomous driving, 3D object detection from the Bird’s Eye View (BEV) perspective has emerged as a pivotal area of focus. The essence of this challenge is the effective fusion of camera and LiDAR data into the BEV. Current approaches predominantly train and predict within the front view and Cartesian coordinate system, often overlooking the inherent structural and operational differences between cameras and LiDAR sensors. This paper introduces CL-FusionBEV, an innovative 3D object detection methodology tailored for sensor data fusion in the BEV perspective. Our approach initiates with a view transformation, facilitated by an implicit learning module that transitions the camera’s perspective to the BEV space, thereby aligning the prediction module. Subsequently, to achieve modal fusion within the BEV framework, we employ voxelization to convert the LiDAR point cloud into BEV space, thereby generating LiDAR BEV spatial features. Moreover, to integrate the BEV spatial features from both camera and LiDAR, we have developed a multi-modal cross-attention mechanism and an implicit multi-modal fusion network, designed to enhance the synergy and application of dual-modal data. To counteract potential deficiencies in global reasoning and feature interaction arising from multi-modal cross-attention, we propose a BEV self-attention mechanism that facilitates comprehensive global feature operations. Our methodology has undergone rigorous evaluation on a substantial dataset within the autonomous driving domain, the nuScenes dataset. The outcomes demonstrate that our method achieves a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 73.3% and a nuScenes Detection Score (NDS) of 75.5%, particularly excelling in the detection of cars and pedestrians with high accuracies of 89% and 90.7%, respectively. Additionally, CL-FusionBEV exhibits superior performance in identifying occluded and distant objects, surpassing existing comparative methods.

Abstract Background The effect of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) can be influenced by the degree of coronary artery stenosis. However, the association between the severity of NAFLD and MACEs in patients who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is unclear. Methods A total of 341 NAFLD patients who underwent CCTA were enrolled. The severity of NAFLD was divided into mild NAFLD and moderate-severe NAFLD by abdominal CT results. The degree of coronary artery stenosis was evaluated by using Coronary Artery Disease Reporting and Data System (CAD-RADS) category. Cox regression analysis and Kaplan–Meier analysis were used to assess poor prognosis. Results During the follow-up period, 45 of 341 NAFLD patients (13.20%) who underwent CCTA occurred MACEs. Abstract To compare diffusion-kurtosis imaging (DKI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) parameters of single-shot echo-planar imaging (ss-EPI) and readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (rs-EPI) in the differentiation of luminal vs. non-luminal breast cancer using histogram analysis. One hundred and sixty women with 111 luminal and 49 non-luminal breast lesions were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent ss-EPI and rs-EPI sequences on a 3.0T scanner. Abstract Accumulating evidence indicates that exosomal proteins are critical in diagnosing malignant tumors. To identify novel exosomal biomarkers for lung cancer diagnosis, we isolated plasma exosomes from 517 lung cancer patients and 168 healthy controls (NLs)—186 lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients (screening (SN): 20, validation (VD): 166), 159 lung squamous carcinoma (LUSC) patients (SN: 20, VD: 139), 172 benign nodules (LUBN) patients (SN: 20, VD: 152) and 168 NLs (SN: 20, VD: 148)—and randomly assigned them to the SN or VD group. Proteomic analysis by LC–MS/MS and PRM were performed on all groups. The candidate humoral markers were evaluated and screened by a machine learning method. All selected biomarkers were identified in the VD groups. For LUAD, a 7-protein panel had AUCs of 97.9% and 87.6% in the training and test sets, respectively, and 89.5% for early LUAD. For LUSC, an 8-protein panel showed AUCs of 99.1% and 87.0% in the training and test sets and 92.3% for early LUSC. For LUAD + LUSC (LC), an 8-protein panel showed AUCs of 85.9% and 80.3% in the training and test sets and 87.1% for early LC diagnosis. Areal density gradient flyers (ADGFs) have important applications in quasi-isentropic compression and high strain rate loading. The wave impedance gradient distribution of the reported ADGFs is single, and the effects of different wave impedance gradient distributions and spikes number density on the loading results are unknown. In this study, the resin-based ADGFs with different spike areal density distribution and spikes number density were designed and prepared using projection micro stereolithography technology (PμSL). The printing accuracy of ADGFs was evaluated using three-dimensional optical profiler, optical microscope, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and ultra depth of field microscope. The loading process of the ADGF on the target was studied by experiment and simulation. The simulation result was consistent with the experimental result. Augmenting the wave impedance distribution index (P) of spikes and spikes number density increases the loading strain rate. Due to the high printing accuracy of PμSL, the fine ADGF structures with large spikes number density can be prepared, thereby promoting the formation of quasi-isentropic compression plane waves. This work realizes the regulation of loading strain rate under shockless quasi-isentropic compression, which is significant for understanding the mechanical response of materials under high strain rate loads.

PurposeVolumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a new treatment modality in modern radiotherapy. To ensure the quality of the radiotherapy plan, a physics plan review is routinely conducted by senior clinicians; however, this process is less efficient and less accurate. In this study, a multi-task AutoEncoder (AE) is proposed to automate anomaly detection of VMAT plans for lung cancer patients.MethodsThe feature maps are first extracted from a VMAT plan. Then, a multi-task AE is trained based on the input of a feature map, and its output is the two targets (beam aperture and prescribed dose). Based on the distribution of reconstruction errors on the training set, a detection threshold value is obtained. For a testing sample, its reconstruction error is calculated using the AE model and compared with the threshold value to determine its classes (anomaly or regular). The proposed multi-task AE model is compared to the other existing AE models, including Vanilla AE, Contractive AE, and Variational AE. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and the other statistics are used to evaluate the performance of these models.ResultsAmong the four tested AE models, the proposed multi-task AE model achieves the highest values in AUC (0.964), accuracy (0.821), precision (0.471), and F1 score (0.632), and the lowest value in FPR (0.206).ConclusionThe proposed multi-task AE model using two-dimensional (2D) feature maps can effectively detect anomalies in radiotherapy plans for lung cancer patients. Compared to the other existing AE models, the multi-task AE is more accurate and efficient. The proposed model provides a feasible way to carry out automated anomaly detection of VMAT plans in radiotherapy.

This review rigorously assesses the burgeoning research into the role of polyphenols in modulating mitophagy, an essential cellular mechanism for the targeted removal of impaired mitochondria. These natural compounds, known for their low toxicity, are underscored for their potential in therapeutic strategies against a diverse array of diseases, such as neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal disorders. The analysis penetrates deeply into the molecular mechanisms whereby polyphenols promote mitophagy, particularly by influencing crucial signaling pathways and transcriptional regulators, including the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1)/parkin and forkhead box O3 (FOXO3a) pathways. Noteworthy discoveries include the neuroprotective properties of resveratrol and curcumin, which affect both autophagic pathways and mitochondrial dynamics, and the pioneering integration of polyphenols with other natural substances to amplify therapeutic effectiveness. Furthermore, the review confronts the issue of polyphenol bioavailability and emphasizes the imperative for clinical trials to corroborate their therapeutic viability. By delivering an exhaustive synthesis of contemporary insights and recent advancements in polyphenol and mitophagy research, this review endeavors to catalyze additional research and foster the creation of innovative therapeutic modalities that exploit the distinctive attributes of polyphenols to manage and prevent disease.

The acoustic emission (AE) characteristic signal can reveal the mechanical properties of rock materials and the development characteristics of internal microcracks. Rocks with different mineral development characteristics produce different AE signals during fracture. This study selected variable metagabbros with varying feldspathic development for AE tests under splitting load. The results demonstrated that the characteristics of AE ringing counts during the Brazilian fracture of metagabbro were closely correlated with the content of felsic minerals. The cumulative AE ringing count of metagabbros with feldspar nondevelopment exceeded 250 000, while those of metagabbros with feldspar development did not reach 200 000. As the feldspathic mineral content increases, the AE ringing counts of metagabbro exhibit an increasing trend in the high-energy (1e6–+∞ aJ) and high-amplitude (90–100 dB) intervals. With the development of feldspar minerals, the fracture mode of metagabbro gradually changed from shear failure to tensile failure. The higher the development of felsic minerals, the higher the stress level corresponding to the maximum fractal dimension, the greater the energy released by rock failure, and the more severe the damage. This study is of great significance for revealing the mechanism of rock rupture.

Tumor growth and metastasis rely on angiogenesis. In recent years, long non-coding RNAs have been shown to play an important role in regulating tumor angiogenesis. Here, we review the multidimensional modes and relevant molecular mechanisms of long non-coding RNAs in regulating tumor angiogenesis. In addition, we summarize new strategies for tumor anti-angiogenesis therapies by targeting long non-coding RNAs. The aim of this study is to provide new diagnostic targets and treatment strategies for anti-angiogenic tumor therapy.

In this study, a composite consisting of a thermosensitive hydrogel (polyvinyl alcohol‐carboxylic acid hydrogel (PCF)) and a multifunctional nanoparticle (Fe3O4@Au/Mn(Zn)‐4‐carboxyphenyl porphyrin/polydopamine (FAMxP)) is developed to combine tumor immunogenic cell death (ICD)/immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy under the guidance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence imaging (FI). It can not only further recognize the target cells through the folate receptor of tumor cells, but also produce thermal dissolution after exposure to near‐infrared light to slowly release FAMxP in situ, thereby prolonging the treatment time and avoiding tumor recurrence. As FAMxP entered the tumor cells, it released FAMx in a pH‐dependent manner. Chemodynamic, photothermal and photodynamic therapy can cause significant ICD in cancer cells. ICB can thus be further enhanced by injecting anti‐programmed cell death ligand 1, improving the effectiveness of tumor treatment. The developed PCF‐FAMxP composite hydrogel may represent an updated drug design approach with simple compositions for cooperative MRI/FI‐guided targeted therapeutic pathways for tumors.

Abstract The atmospheric CO2 growth rate is a fundamental measure of climate forcing. NOAA's growth rate estimates, derived from in situ observations at the marine boundary layer (MBL), serve as the benchmark in policy and science. However, NOAA's MBL‐based method encounters challenges in accurately estimating the whole‐atmosphere CO2 growth rate at sub‐annual scales. Here we introduce the Growth Rate from Satellite Observations (GRESO) method as a complementary approach to estimate the whole‐atmosphere CO2 growth rate utilizing satellite data. Satellite CO2 observations offer extensive atmospheric coverage that extends the capability of the current NOAA benchmark. We assess the sampling errors of the GRESO and NOAA methods using 10 atmospheric transport model simulations. The simulations generate synthetic OCO‐2 satellite and NOAA MBL data for calculating CO2 growth rates, which are compared against the global sum of carbon fluxes used as model inputs. We find good performance for the NOAA method (R = 0.93, RMSE = 0.12 ppm year−1 or 0.25 PgC year−1). GRESO demonstrates lower sampling errors (R = 1.00; RMSE = 0.04 ppm year−1 or 0.09 PgC year−1). Additionally, GRESO shows better performance at monthly scales than the NOAA method (R = 0.76 vs. 0.47, respectively). Due to CO2's atmospheric longevity, the NOAA method accurately captures growth rates over 5‐year intervals. GRESO's robustness across partial coverage configurations (ocean or land data) shows that satellites can be promising tools for low‐latency CO2 growth rate information, provided the systematic biases are minimized using in situ observations. Along with accurate and calibrated NOAA in situ data, satellite‐derived growth rates can provide information about the global carbon cycle at sub‐annual scales.

The bilateral teleoperation system is susceptible to model parameter uncertainty and unknown disturbances in both the master and slave manipulators, resulting in instability and inaccuracies in the force and position tracking performance. To address these issues, a novel nonlinear model reference adaptive impedance controller has been designed to achieve coordinated force and position synchronization of dual manipulators. The adaptive control laws, based on sliding mode functions, have been designed to compensate for the uncertainty of the manipulator model. Furthermore, an adaptive estimation law has been employed to appraise the unknown upper bound of external disturbances. This ensures that the closed-loop model parameters of the dual manipulator converge to the reference impedance model respectively. Simultaneously, it enables the position error between the reference model response and the end-effector task space position to asymptotically converge to zero. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller, simulations have been conducted on the MATLAB platform and experiments on a single degree of freedom teleoperation system have been performed. The results demonstrate that the controller exhibits strong robustness and has the capability of force-position tracking ability.

Abstract The development of optoelectronics mimicking the functions of the biological nervous system is important to artificial intelligence. This work demonstrates an optoelectronic, artificial, afferent-nerve strategy based on memory-electroluminescence spikes, which can realize multiple action-potentials combination through a single optical channel. The memory-electroluminescence spikes have diverse morphologies due to their history-dependent characteristics and can be used to encode distributed sensor signals. As the key to successful functioning of the optoelectronic, artificial afferent nerve, a driving mode for light-emitting diodes, namely, the non-carrier injection mode, is proposed, allowing it to drive nanoscale light-emitting diodes to generate a memory-electroluminescence spikes that has multiple sub-peaks. Moreover, multiplexing of the spikes can be obtained by using optical signals with different wavelengths, allowing for a large signal bandwidth, and the multiple action-potentials transmission process in afferent nerves can be demonstrated. Finally, sensor-position recognition with the bio-inspired afferent nerve is developed and shown to have a high recognition accuracy of 98.88%. This work demonstrates a strategy for mimicking biological afferent nerves and offers insights into the construction of artificial perception systems.

Abstract Background To compare the compartmentalized diffusion-weighted models, intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and restriction spectrum imaging (RSI), in characterizing breast lesions and normal fibroglandular tissue. Methods This prospective study enrolled 152 patients with 157 histopathologically verified breast lesions (41 benign and 116 malignant). All patients underwent a full-protocol preoperative breast MRI, including a multi-b-value DWI sequence. The diffusion parameters derived from the mono-exponential model (ADC), IVIM model (Dt, Dp, f), and RSI model (C1, C2, C3, C1C2, F1, F2, F3, F1F2) were quantitatively measured and then compared among malignant lesions, benign lesions and normal fibroglandular tissues using Kruskal-Wallis test. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for the pairwise comparisons. Diagnostic models were built by logistic regression analysis. The ROC analysis was performed using five-fold cross-validation and the mean AUC values were calculated and compared to evaluate the discriminative ability of each parameter or model. Results Almost all quantitative diffusion parameters showed significant differences in distinguishing malignant breast lesions from both benign lesions (other than C2) and normal fibroglandular tissue (all parameters) (all P < 0.0167). Abstract Background Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) is a rare type of thyroid cancer. Accurate prediction of lateral cervical lymph node metastases (LCLNM) in MTC patients can help guide surgical decisions and ensure that patients receive the most appropriate and effective surgery. To our knowledge, no studies have been published that use radiomics analysis to forecast LCLNM in MTC patients. The purpose of this study is to develop a radiomics combined with thyroid imaging reporting and data system (TI-RADS) model that can use preoperative thyroid ultrasound images to noninvasively predict the LCLNM status of MTC. Methods We retrospectively included 218 MTC patients who were confirmed from postoperative pathology as LCLNM negative (n=111) and positive (n=107). Ultrasound features were selected using the Student’s t-test, while radiomics features are first extracted from preoperative thyroid ultrasound images, and then a two-step feature selection approach was used to select features. These features are then used to establish three regularized logistic regression models, namely the TI-RADS model (TM), the radiomics model (RM), and the radiomics-TI-RADS model (RTM), in 5-fold cross-validation to determine the likelihood of the LCLNM. The application of solar steam generation in seawater desalination is an effective way to solve the shortage of fresh water resources. At present, many kinds of photothermal conversion materials have been developed and used as evaporators in seawater desalination. However, some evaporators need additional thermal insulation or water supply devices to achieve efficient photothermal conversion. In addition, their complex, time consuming and no scalable preparation process, high cost of raw materials and poor salt resistance hinder the practical application of these evaporator. Owing to its distinctive nanoporous structure, diatomite as fossilized single-cells algae diatoms is a promising natural silica-based material for seawater desalination. They are taken from sea and that makes true sense to use them in the sea. Herein, we report the first example of synthesis robust three-dimensional (3D) natural-diatomite composite by assembling polyaniline nanoparticles covered diatomite into the polyvinyl alcohol pre-treated melamine foam frameworks and demonstrate its application as new evaporator for seawater desalination. The porous framework does not only improve the sunlight scattering efficiency, but also offer large network of channels for water transportation. The inherent mechanism behind salt desalination process involves the absorption of water molecules on the surface of the internal silica micro-nano pores, and evaporation under the heat induced by the polyaniline absorbed sunlight. Meanwhile, the metal ions are segregated by many available pores and channels to achieve the self-desalting effect. The developed evaporator possesses the superiority of multi-stage pore structure, strong hydrophilicity, low thermal conductivity, excellent light absorption, fast water transportation and salt-resistant crystallization as well as good durability. The evaporation rate without an additional device is found to be 1.689 kg m−2 h−1 under 1-Sun irradiation, and the energy conversion efficiency is as high as 95%. This work creates a platform and develops the prospect of employing green and sustainable natural-diatomite composite evaporator for practical applications of seawater desalination.
