Overhead transmission lines are the main means of power transmission in China. These transmission lines are very susceptible to the influence of severe weather (such as rain and snow) in alpine mountainous areas, and easy to suffer from icing. The research on deicing mainly focuses on the removal of ice,and the research on preventing or slowing down the formation of icing on transmission lines is relatively deficient.Hence, based on the Cassie model and the VOF (volume of fluid) method, the shape changes and behavior characteristics of water droplets on the surface of V-shaped,rectangular and circular microgrooves were simulated, and the hydrophobicity of V-shaped microgrooves was found to be the best.Subsequently, the ZS-611 and ZS-711,two kinds of new hydrophobic anti-ice coatings which could generate V-shaped microgrooves on the cable surface, were selected to conduct icing test on the cable. Results showed that compared with the untreated cable, the icing condition of the cables covered with coatings was better, and the anti-icing effect of the cable treated with ZS-711 was the best.
