MicroRNAs are reportedly involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy. We previously identified 7 differentially expressed microRNAs in Parkinson’s disease patients and control sera (miR-30c, miR-31, miR-141, miR-146b-5p, miR-181c, miR-214, and miR-193a-3p). To investigate the expression levels of the 7 serum microRNAs in Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy, 23 early Parkinson’s disease patients (who did not take any anti- Parkinson’s disease drugs), 23 multiple system atrophy patients, and 24 normal controls were recruited at outpatient visits in this study. The expression levels of the 7 microRNAs in serum were detected using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate whether microRNAs can differentially diagnose Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy. Clinical scales were used to analyze the correlations between serum microRNAs and clinical features. The results indicated that miR-214 could distinguish Parkinson’s disease from the controls, and another 3 microRNAs could differentiate multiple system atrophy from the controls (miR-141, miR-193a-3p, and miR-30c). The expression of miR-31, miR-141, miR-181c, miR-193a-3p, and miR-214 were lower in multiple system atrophy than in Parkinson’s disease (all P < 0.05). Combinations of microRNAs accurately discriminated Parkinson’s disease from multiple system atrophy (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.951). For the correlation analysis, negative correlations were discovered between the expression of miR-214 and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and Parkinson’s Disease Non-Motor Symptom scores (all P < 0.05). Our results demonstrate that the distinctive characteristics of microRNAs differentiate Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy patients from healthy controls and may be used for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy.

Background: Sarcopenia is a syndrome marked by a gradual and widespread reduction in skeletal muscle mass and strength, as well as a decline in functional ability, which is associated with malnutrition, hormonal changes, chronic inflammation, disturbance of intestinal flora, and exercise quality. Pancreatoduodenectomy is a commonly employed clinical intervention for conditions such as pancreatic head cancer, ampulla of Vater cancer, and cholangiocarcinoma, among others, with a notably high rate of postoperative complications. Sarcopenia is frequent in patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy. However, data regarding the effects of sarcopenia in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) are both limited and inconsistent., Aim: To assess the influence of sarcopenia on outcomes in patients undergoing PD., Methods: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases were screened for studies published from the time of database inception to June 2023 that described the effects of sarcopenia on the outcomes and complications of PD. Two researchers independently assessed the quality of the data extracted from the studies that met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3.5 and Stata 14.0 software was conducted. Forest and funnel plots were used, respectively, to demonstrate the outcomes of the sarcopenia group vs the non-sarcopenia group after PD and to evaluate potential publication bias., Results: Sixteen studies encompassing 2381 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The patients in the sarcopenia group ( n = 833) had higher overall postoperative complication rates [odds ratio (OR) = 3.42, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.95-5.99, P < 0.0001], higher Clavien-Dindo class ≥ III major complication rates (OR = 1.41, 95%CI: 1.04-1.90, P = 0.03), higher bacteremia rates (OR = 4.46, 95%CI: 1.42-13.98, P = 0.01), higher pneumonia rates (OR = 2.10, 95%CI: 1.34-3.27, P = 0.001), higher pancreatic fistula rates (OR = 1.42, 95%CI: 1.12-1.79, P = 0.003), longer hospital stays (OR = 2.86, 95%CI: 0.44-5.28, P = 0.02), higher mortality rates (OR = 3.17, 95%CI: 1.55-6.50, P = 0.002), and worse overall survival (hazard ratio = 2.81, 95%CI: 1.45-5.45, P = 0.002) than those in the non-sarcopenia group ( n = 1548). However, no significant inter-group differences were observed regarding wound infections, urinary tract infections, biliary fistulas, or postoperative digestive bleeding., Conclusion: Sarcopenia is a common comorbidity in patients undergoing PD. Anonymous password-authenticated key exchange (APAKE) allows a client to authenticate herself and to establish a secure session key with a remote server via only a low-entropy password, while keeping her actual identity anonymous to the third party as well as to the server. Since that APAKE protocol enjoys both the convenience of password authentication and the advantage of privacy protection, researchers have paid much attention to them. However, most of the existing APAKE protocols are designed in the symmetric setting which does not take into consideration the threat of password file leakage. To mitigate the damage of server compromise, we propose a verifier-based anonymous password-authenticated key exchange protocol, in which the server holds a verifier corresponding to each client instead of the clear password. The construction of our protocol is built on standard cryptographic primitives such public key encryption, smooth projective hash functions and password hashing schemes. The resulting protocol is proved secure in the standard model, i.e., without resorting to random oracles. Comparisons with other similar schemes show that our protocol guarantees stronger security while enjoys considerable efficiency in terms of computational cost.

The title compound, C(18)H(13)BrN(2)O(2), was synthesized by the reaction of 2-hydr-oxy-1-naphthaldehyde with 4-bromo-benzohydrazide. This Schiff base mol-ecule has an E configuration about the C=N bond and is almost planar, the dihedral angle between the mean planes through the substituted benzene ring and the naphthyl system being 6.6 (2)°. There is an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond involving the naphthyl hydr-oxy substituent and the N' atom of the hydrazide group. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked through inter-molecular N--H⋯O hydrogen bonds to form chains extending along the b direction.
