Investigation of the energy structure of multicharged ions formed in a hot laser plasma requires progression from the vacuum ultraviolet to the soft X-ray region of the spectrum, as a large part of the transitions of astrophysical interest lie precisely in this range. In the apparatus described in the report for analyzing the soft X-ray radiation of a laser plasma, a convex crystal was used as the dispersing element. A spectrogram was obtained containing about 40 lines of highly ionized iron in the region of 10-16A.

The paper deals with experimental investigation of gas-dynamic properties of the laser plasma, created by focusing power laser radiation on the carbon target surface. The time dependence of the plasma pressure in the heated part, mass flux from the target surface and heated plasma mass are measured by the method of time scanning of the interferogram split image with an image converter tube. The gas-dynamic processes taking place in the heated plasma are discussed. It is observed that in the case of a multimode Q-switched laser the plasma pressure maximum is reached at the pulse beginning. Electron density measurements in a carbon plasma created by heating a solid target with about 1 GW emission from a glass laser were performed. The dependence of Ne on the distance from the target was determined by Stark broadening of H-like Carbon VI spectral lines in the vacuum and quartz ultraviolet regions. The Doppler shift of Carbon IV ion absorption lines (like Fraunhofer solar lines) permitted the measurement of the asymptotic gas-dynamic velocity of ion expansion., Trans. of Akademiya Nauk SSSR.
