Phosphorus recovery is essential, especially from wastewater containing high levels of phosphorus from the semiconductor industries, food companies, and livestock. This study aims to determine how pH, Fe/P molar ratio, and Zn/P molar ratio affect the crystallization of ferrous phosphate. Response surface methodology—central composite design was utilized to optimize the recovery efficiency of ferrous phosphate in a fluidized bed crystallization reactor. The pH and Fe/P molar ratio were adjusted within the ranges of 3.8 to 9.6 and 0.58 to 3.40, respectively, for the fluidized bed crystallization. The Zn/P molar ratio parameter was set between 0.1 and 1.0 to evaluate the impact of zinc. Following optimization by response surface analysis, the phosphorus removal efficiency was nearly 100% at pH 7.3, Fe/P molar ratio of 2.5, and the phosphate crystal efficiency was 60.3% at pH 6.8, Fe/P molar ratio of 1.9. In addition, the study discovered that zinc ion would significantly reduce the efficiency of ferrous phosphate recovery during the crystallization process, with the maximum phosphate crystal efficiency declines to 47% at Zn/P molar ratio of 0.5. Zinc-ion energy storage devices (ZESDs), including zinc ion capacitors and zinc ion batteries, are being intensely pursued due to their abundant resources, economic effectiveness, high safety, and environmental friendliness. Carbon materials play their important role in the development of ZESDs, from cathode, electrolyte, to metallic Zn anode. Though thrilling development has been achieved in ZESDs, they still face the challenges of unsatisfactory capacity and kinetics for cathode, and irreversibility and low utilization rate of Zn anode. Hence, the roles of carbon materials in ZESDs are systematically discussed, starting with investigating carbons with different dimensions as cathodes and the corresponding strategies to improve their performance. Also, carbons as coatings or skeletons for other types of cathode materials are introduced. Besides, the functions of carbons in electrolyte development are explored. Further, the influence of carbon materials on Zn anode is elucidated with the corresponding operational mechanisms. Finally, an outlook for carbon materials in ZESDs is provided. We envision the presented minireview can pay way on exploring novel carbon research towards next-generation energy storage technologies.

A new phenanthroline derivative bearing imidazole group, (2-(3,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)-1-p-tolyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10]phenanthroline) has been devised. The derivative serves as a multifunctional probe, exhibiting a highly sensitive colorimetric response to Fe2+ ion and a selectively ratiometric fluorescent response to Zn2+ ion in a buffer-ethanol solution. The colorless-to-red visual color change upon addition of Fe2+ accompanied by enhanced absorption makes this derivative a suitable naked-eye sensor for Fe2+ ion. Moreover, the derivative displayed a Zn2+-induced red-shift of emission (44 nm), showing a color change from blue to light cyan under a 365-nm UV lamp. Its practical imaging applicability for intracellular Zn2+ was confirmed in HeLa cells using a confocal microscope. The existing strategies for myocardial infarction therapy mainly focus on reinstating myocardial blood supply, often disregarding the intrinsic and intricate microenvironment created by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that accompanies myocardial infarction. This microenvironment entails cardiomyocytes apoptosis, substantial vascular cell death, excessive inflammatory infiltration and fibrosis. In such situation, the present study introduces a zinc-based nanozyme injectable multifunctional hydrogel, crafted from ZIF-8, to counteract ROS effects after myocardial infarction. The hydrogel exhibits both superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like and catalase (CAT)-like enzymatic activities, proficiently eliminating surplus ROS in the infarcted region and interrupting ROS-driven inflammatory cascades. Furthermore, the hydrogel's exceptional immunomodulatory ability spurs a notable transformation of macrophages into the M2 phenotype, effectively neutralizing inflammatory factors and indirectly fostering vascularization in the infarcted region. For high ROS and demanding for zinc of the infarcted microenvironment, the gradual release of zinc ions as the hydrogel degrades further enhances the bioactive and catalytic performance of the nanozymes, synergistically promoting cardiac function post myocardial infarction. In conclusion, this system of deploying catalytic nanomaterials within bioactive matrices for ROS-related ailment therapy not only establishes a robust foundation for biomedical material development, but also promises a holistic approach towards addressing myocardial infarction complexities. The specificity, programmability and biocompatibility of DNA materials make them advantageous for applications in bio-detection and drug delivery. To further expand the applications and synthesis methods of DNA materials, in this study, Zn2+/DNA self-assembled nanoparticles (ZDNPs) with tumor-responsive marker microRNA-21 (miR-21) are simply and efficiently synthesized by utilizing the cooperative interaction between DNA and metal ions. Through the specific complementarity of the DNA hairpin structure in ZDNPs with miR-21, the fluorescent signal is activated and Zn2+ is released, which result in intracellular ROS production and can be used for fluorescence imaging and oxidative stress therapy of tumor. The synthesized ZDNPs are uniformly shaped spherical particles that can effectively load Zn2+. Depending on the responsive experiment of ZDNPs to miR-21, it is verified that there is a good linear fluorescence response signal with specificity between ZDNPs and miR-21 concentration. The linear response range is 5~160 nmol/L, and the detection limit is 5 nmol/L. The intracellular effects of ZDNPs are also investigated, and the results show that they can perform responsive fluorescence imaging, and mediate apoptosis of tumor cells through the oxidative stress pathway. As for in vivo fluorescence imaging and tumor therapy, ZDNPs demonstrate specific and sustained tracing ability at tumor lesion sites and produce significant growth inhibition effects on tumor. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical obtained from Cannabis sativa; it has therapeutic effects on anxiety and cognition and anti-inflammatory properties. Although pharmacological applications of CBD in many types of tumors have recently been reported, the mechanism of action of CBD is not yet fully understood. In this study, we perform an mRNA-seq analysis to identify the target genes of CBD after determining the cytotoxic concentrations of CBD using an MTT assay. CBD treatment regulated the expression of genes related to DNA repair and cell division, with metallothionein (MT) family genes being identified as having highly increased expression levels induced by CBD. It was also found that the expression levels of MT family genes were decreased in colorectal cancer tissues compared to those in normal tissues, indicating that the downregulation of MT family genes might be highly associated with colorectal tumor progression. A qPCR experiment revealed that the expression levels of MT family genes were increased by CBD. Moreover, MT family genes were regulated by CBD or crude extract but not by other cannabinoids, suggesting that the expression of MT family genes was specifically induced by CBD. A synergistic effect between CBD and MT gene transfection or zinc ion treatment was found. In conclusion, MT family genes as novel target genes could synergistically increase the anticancer activity of CBD by regulating the zinc ions in human colorectal cancer cells. Metal-binding proteins, including proteases, play critical roles in the replication and pathogenesis of RNA viruses. This study conducted a comprehensive analysis to elucidate the landscape of metalloproteins and identify metal-binding proteases within RNA viruses. The analysis revealed the presence of predicted metalbinding proteins in 19 significant RNA viral families, encompassing 45 viral genera and 375 viral species. The predicted metalloproteome primarily consisted of magnesium (47%) and zinc (40%) binding proteins, with manganese (11%) binding proteins also identified. Through advanced bioinformatics tools, a data set of 905 carefully selected metalloproteins underwent rigorous functional characterization. The prevalence of polyproteins (37%), RNA polymerases (22%), and proteases (10%) was observed. Furthermore, metal ion binding was achieved in viral structural, non-structural, and accessory proteins such as integrase and methyltransferase. The in-depth investigation focused on protease domains, identifying a refined set of 456 non-redundant protease domains. Among them, 78 protease domains were determined to possess metal-binding properties, with zinc and magnesium binding emphasized. The findings provide significant insights into metal-binding proteases' distribution and evolutionary patterns, particularly in major human RNA viral proteases. Sequence similarity network analysis highlighted the presence of different classes of peptidases in viral families, such as zinc-binding peptidase C30 in the coronaviridae family, including human coronavirus proteases, and peptidase C16 in all genera of coronaviruses. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the immense potential of metal-binding proteases as therapeutic targets. Continued exploration of metal-binding proteomes will further enhance our understanding of metal-dependent biological processes and facilitate the development of innovative antiviral strategies. Biofouling is a major concern in marine industries. The use of traditional toxic antifouling coatings is forbidden or severely restricted. This study aimed to provide a green and effective antifouling coating. The coating was prepared using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix and Cu-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu). Four samples with different ZnS:Cu contents (1, 10, 20, and 50 wt%) were prepared. Pristine PDMS (0 wt%) was used as the control. The results showed that all coatings had hydrophobic surfaces conducive to combating biofouling. In tests against B. Subtilis, the 1, 10, 20, and 50 wt% samples showed enhanced antifouling capabilities compared to the 0 wt% sample. In static and dynamic tests against Chlorella, the antifouling capability increased with increasing ZnS:Cu content and the 50 wt% sample showed the best antifouling capability. The possible antifouling mechanisms of these coatings include the release of ions (Zn2+ and Cu+), induction of deformation, and fluorescence emission. Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) at 20, 50, 100, and 200 μg/mL on the quality of seminal plasma‐free boar sperm stored at 17°C for 7 days and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods Boar sperm were collected and incubated in non‐capacitation/capacitation medium to analyze sperm quality. Results In the non‐capacitated state, the addition of ZnCl2 at 20 and 50 μg/mL improved the survival rate and plasma membrane integrity of boar sperm (p < 0.05). Compared to the control group, the addition of ZnCl2 significantly increased total antioxidative capacity and CuZn superoxide dismutase activity, while reducing the malondialdehyde content (p < 0.05). ZnCl2 at 100 and 200 μg/mL significantly decreased sperm motility, protein kinase A (PKA) substrate phosphorylation, and tyrosine phosphorylation. These proteins were mainly located on the mid‐pieces of the flagellum. The addition of ZnCl2 at 20 and 50 μg/mL conveyed a protective effect to boar sperm stored at 17°C. Furthermore, ZnCl2 at 100 and 200 μg/mL inhibited sperm motility via tyrosine phosphorylation, thus preventing the ‘capacitation‐like’ state. In the capacitated state, there was no change in PKA substrate phosphorylation and tyrosine phosphorylation of the mid‐pieces of the flagellum compared to the control groups, indicating that the addition of Zn2+ did not negatively affect capacitation of preserved sperm. Conclusions ZnCl2 showed protective capacity to the preservation extender used for boar sperm during the process of 17°C storage, and the optimal concentration of ZnCl2 for the preservation extender was 100 μg/mL.

Background: Early screening of prostate cancer (PCa) is pivotal but challenging in the clinical scenario due to the phenomena of false positivity or false negativity of some serological evaluations, e.g. PSA testing. Decline of serum Zn2+ levels in PCa patients reportedly plays a crucial role in early screening of PCa. Accordingly, we combined 4 indices comprising the serum levels of total PSA (tPSA), free PSA (fPSA), Zn2+ and demographic information (especially age) in order to ameliorate the efficacies of PCa screening with support vector machine (SVM) algorithms. Methods: A total of 858 male patients with prostate disorders and 345 healthy male controls were enrolled. Patients’ data included 4 variables and serum Zn2+ was quantified via a self-invented Zn2+ responsive AIE-based fluorescent probe as previously published. tPSA and fPSA were routinely determined by a chemiluminescent method. Mathematical simulations were conducted to establish a SVM model for the combined diagnostics with the four variables. Moreover, ROC and its characteristic AUC were also employed to evaluate the classification efficacy of the model. Sigmoid function was utilized to estimate corresponding probabilities of classifying the clinical subjects as per 5 grades, which were incorporated into our established prostate index (PI) stratification system. Results: In SVM model, the mean AUC of the ROC with the quartet of variables was approximately 84% for PCa diagnosis, whereas the mean AUC of the ROCs with tPSA, fPSA, [Zn2+] or age alone was 64%, 62%, 55% and 59%, respectively. We further established an integrated prostate index (PI) stratification system with 5 grades and a software package to support clinicians in predicting PCa, with the accuracy of our risk stratification system being 83.3%, 91.6% and 83.3% in predicting normal, benign and PCa cases in corresponding groups. Follow-up findings especially MRI results and PI-RADS scores supported the reliability of this stratification platform as well. Conclusion: Findings from our present study demonstrated that index combination via SVM algorithms may well facilitate clinicians in early differential screening of PCa. Meanwhile, our established PI stratification system based on SVM model and Sigmoid function provided substantial accuracy in preclinical risk prediction of developing prostate cancer.

As known, in the synthesis of conductive polyaniline polymer from aniline monomer, the polymerization medium must be acidic. In order to make the polymerization medium acidic, protonic acids such as HCl and H2SO4 are generally used. In this study, two acids have been used to make the polymerization medium acidic. One of them, as we know, is H2SO4 as a protonic acid. The other acid is the zinc ion, which is a Lewis acid. The metal ion has never been used for this purpose up to now. Two polyaniline polymers have been synthesized to prove that conductive polymers can also be synthesized in the presence of metal ions instead of protonic acid. One of them is the polyaniline polymer, synthesized in the presence of H2SO4(PANI). The other polymer is polyaniline polymer, synthesized in the presence of zinc ions as acid (PANI-Zn-PSS). The synthesized polymers have been characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), X-ray diffraction diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis.), thermal analysis techniques (thermo-gravimetric analysis, TGA)/differential thermal analysis, DTA) and electrical conductivity measurements kit. Remarkably, 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, the similar crystal system and unit cell parameters as 2, but with a space group distinct from 1 and 2, i.e., 1 is the noncentrosymmetric space group C2, whereas 2 is the centrosymmetric space group C2/m. This polar structure for 1 is induced by the presence of alternating arrangements of distinguishable two axial Zn–N bonds within [Zn(CN2pyzdione)2(pyz)]2– chains. Indeed, solid-state circular dichroism spectra of 1 exhibit significant Cotton effects, as evidenced by the polar space group C2. Moreover, these Cotton effects show clear temperature-dependence depending on contents of H2O molecules of 1.

The abuse of antibiotics makes bacterial infection an increasingly serious global health threat. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are the ideal alternative antibacterial approach for quick and effective sterilization. Although various antibacterial strategies based on ROS have been developed, many of them are still limited by insufficient antibacterial efficiency. Here, we have developed an acid-enhanced dual-modal antibacterial strategy based on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF8) -derived nanozyme. ZIF8, which can release Zn2+, is chosen as the carrier to integrate glucose oxidase (GOx) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) which can produce ROS via a cascade catalytic reaction. Thus, the bactericidal capability of ROS and Zn2+ have been integrated. More importantly, gluconic acid, a “by-product” of the catalytic reaction, can generate an acidic environment to promote both the ROS-producing and Zn2+-releasing, enhancing the overall antibacterial performance further. This triple-synergistic strategy exhibits extraordinary bactericidal ability at a low dosage of 4 μg/mL (for S. aureus) and 8 μg/mL (for E. coli), which shows a great potential of MOF-derived nanozyme for efficient bacterial eradication and diverse biomedical applications.

Calcite mesocrystals were proposed, and have been widely reported, to form in the presence of polymer additives via oriented assembly of nanoparticles. However, the formation mechanism and the role of polymer additives remain elusive. Here, inspired by the biomineralization process of sea urchin spine comprising magnesium calcite mesocrystals, we show that calcite mesocrystals could also be obtained via attachment of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles in the presence of inorganic zinc ions. Moreover, we demonstrate that zinc ions can induce the formation of temporarily stabilized amorphous nanoparticles of less than 20 nm at a significantly lower calcium carbonate concentration as compared to pure solution, which is energetically beneficial for the attachment and occlusion during calcite growth. The cation-mediated particle attachment crystallization significantly improves our understanding of mesocrystal formation mechanisms in biomineralization and offers new opportunities to bioprocess inspired inorganic ions regulated materials fabrication. Zinc was used as a cationic additive to mediate the crystallization of amorphous 3 calcium carbonate, leading to the formation of calcite mesocrystals via a particle 4 attachment crystallization mechanism. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the interaction between zinc ions and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by ultraviolet-visible, fluorescence, circular dichroism, and FTIR spectroscopies. HRP conformation analysis revealed a noticeable decrease in α-helix from 47% for the free enzyme to 17% for HRP–Zn2+ and a reduction in tertiary structures of the enzyme through a Zn2+ interaction. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity of HRP was decreased significantly by Zn2+. The linear relationship of HRP emission data and inhibitor concentration indicated that the extinction process is linear and occurs uniformly with increasing Zn2+ concentration. Biopolymers are an emerging class of novel materials with diverse applications and properties such as superior sustainability and tunability. Here, applications of biopolymers are described in the context of energy storage devices, namely lithium-based batteries, zinc-based batteries, and capacitors. Current demand for energy storage technologies calls for improved energy density, preserved performance overtime, and more sustainable end-of-life behavior. Lithium-based and zinc-based batteries often face anode corrosion from processes such as dendrite formation. Capacitors typically struggle with achieving functional energy density caused by an inability to efficiently charge and discharge. Both classes of energy storage need to be packaged with sustainable materials due to their potential leakages of toxic metals. In this review paper, recent progress in energy applications is described for biocompatible polymers such as silk, keratin, collagen, chitosan, cellulose, and agarose. Fabrication techniques are described for various components of the battery/capacitors including the electrode, electrolyte, and separators with biopolymers. Of these methods, incorporating the porosity found within various biopolymers is commonly used to maximize ion transport in the electrolyte and prevent dendrite formations in lithium-based, zinc-based batteries, and capacitors. Overall, integrating biopolymers in energy storage solutions poses a promising alternative that can theoretically match traditional energy sources while eliminating harmful consequences to the environment. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical obtained from Cannabis sativa; it has therapeutic effects on anxiety and cognition and anti-inflammatory properties. Although pharmacological applications of CBD in many types of tumors have recently been reported, the mechanism of action of CBD is not yet fully understood. In this study, we perform an mRNA-seq analysis to identify the target genes of CBD after determining the cytotoxic concentrations of CBD using an MTT assay. CBD treatment regulated the expression of genes related to DNA repair and cell division, with metallothionein (MT) family genes being identified as having highly increased expression levels induced by CBD. It was also found that the expression levels of MT family genes were decreased in colorectal cancer tissues compared to those in normal tissues, indicating that the downregulation of MT family genes might be highly associated with colorectal tumor progression. A qPCR experiment revealed that the expression levels of MT family genes were increased by CBD. Moreover, MT family genes were regulated by CBD or crude extract but not by other cannabinoids, suggesting that the expression of MT family genes was specifically induced by CBD. A synergistic effect between CBD and MT gene transfection or zinc ion treatment was found. In conclusion, MT family genes as novel target genes could synergistically increase the anticancer activity of CBD by regulating the zinc ions in human colorectal cancer cells.

In this work, an acylhydrazone derivative (QN62) was developed via the one-step condensation of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic hydrazide with quinoline-8-carboxaldehyde. The structure of the QN62 compound was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HR-MS (ESI), and X-ray crystallography. As a dual-functional turn-on fluorescence chemosensor, QN62 exhibited rapid recognition for Zn2+ in DMSO-H2O (4:1, v/v) and Mg2+ in ethanol-H2O (9:1, v/v). The enhancement in fluorescence detection was associated with the coordination reaction between QN62 and the target ions, which promoted intramolecular charge transfer and prevented the CN isomerization process. Simultaneously, a rapid color change from colorless to yellowish-green or yellow under UV light (365 nm) was easily visible to the naked eye. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection and limit of quantification were 32.3 nM and 97.8 nM for Zn2+ and 16.1 nM and 48.9 nM for Mg2+, respectively. The recognition mechanism was reasonably speculated based on analysis of the Job’s plot, HR-MS, 1H NMR, and density functional theoretical calculations. Utilizing silica-gel plates fabricated from the QN62 chemosensor, the visual and rapid identification of Zn2+ and Mg2+ was successfully achieved, which could provide a convenient approach for on-site detection in environmental fields. The QN62 chemosensor could also quantify trace amounts of Zn2+ and Mg2+ in water samples. Furthermore, the cell imaging experiments indicated that QN62 could effectively sense intracellular Zn2+ and Mg2+, providing potential applications in biological systems.

Tetracycline (TC) is an antibiotic that has been widely used in the animal husbandry. Thus, TC residues may be found in animal products. Developing simple and sensitive methods for rapid screening of TC in complex samples is of great importance. Herein, we demonstrate a fluorescence-sensing method using Zn2+ as sensing probes for the detection of TC. Although TC can emit fluorescence under the excitation of ultraviolet light, its fluorescence is weak because of dynamic intramolecular rotations, leading to the dissipation of excitation energy. With the addition of Zn2+ prepared in tris(hydroxymethyl)amino-methane (Tris), TC can coordinate with Zn2+ in the Zn2+-Tris conjugates to form Tris-Zn2+-TC complexes. Therefore, the intramolecular motions of TC are restricted to reduce nonradiative decay, resulting in the enhancement of TC fluorescence. Aggregation-induced emission effects also play a role in the enhancement of TC fluorescence. Our results show that the linear dynamic range for the detection of TC is 15–300 nM. Moreover, the limit of detection was ~7 nM. A straightforward methodology was employed for the self-reinforcement of zinc ions (Zn+2) within the polyelectrolyte complexation of xanthan gum (XG) and chitosan (CS) using D (+)-glucuronic acid-δ-lactone (GDL) as an acidifying agent in aqueous environment. The self-reinforcement and polyelectrolyte complexation between XG and CS was primarily achieved by maintaining acidic conditions through the use of GDL. GDL produces H+ ions, not only in converting ZnO to Zn+2 ions but also in facilitating the polyelectrolyte complexation between XG and CS. The confirmation of Zn+2 self-reinforcement was evident through the disappearance of ZnO, as observed in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns. The compressive properties of self-reinforced Zn+2 within XG-CS hydrogels were evaluated, and their compressive strength was found to depend significantly on the reinforcement of ZnO nanoparticles. Incorporating 1 wt% ZnO improved the compressive strength of the hydrogels, decreasing further with an increasing amount of ZnO (3 wt%), as confirmed by compressive analysis. Detailed SEM images conclusively demonstrated The hydrogels porous structure, and elemental analysis verified the presence of Zn+2 ions. The antibacterial activity of Zn+2 reinforced XG-CS hydrogel showed excellent antibacterial activity towards both positive and negative bacteria. Furthermore, the biocompatibility analysis was assessed through an in vitro study that confirmed good biocompatibility towards NIH3T3 fibroblast cells. Thus, a robust inhibitory effect of bacterial growth and biocompatibility of developed hydrogels hold promise in advanced wound dressings for infected wounds. A colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe 2-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (probe 1), was designed and synthesized for sensitive and selective detection of Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions in methanol, test paper and actual water samples. When probe 1 was excited at 350 nm in methanol solution, in the presence of alkali metal ions, alkali-earth metal ions and a variety of transition metal ions, it showed sensitive fluorescence selectivity to Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions. With the addition of Zn2+, the color of the solution changed from purple to cyan with the naked eye, and with the addition of Cd2+, the color of the solution changed from purple to blue. The fluorescence intensity of probe 1 showed a good linear relationship with Zn2+ and Cd2+ concentrations, and the detection limits were 0.04 μM and 0.11 μM, respectively. The binding mode of probe 1 and Cd2+ was discussed according to the 1-Cd single X-ray crystal structure. In addition, the results of strip test and real water sample test showed that probe 1 has potential application in environmental metal ion recognition and detection.

The design and synthesis of three new 1,8-naphthalimide-based fluorescent sensors (1–3) for the detection of Zn2+ in aqueous solution is described. The structural architect of these sensors contains 1,8-naphthalimide scaffold as a fluorophore attached to 2,2′-dipicolylamine (DPA) and bis(2-quinolinylmethyl)amine (DQA) receptors through an amide linkage. The addition of Zn2+ to the solutions of sensors (1–3) led to enhanced fluorescence intensity, ranging between 2.5 and 14 folds. At physiological pH (pH = 7.4), these sensors exhibited high selectivities for Zn2+ over a wide range of competing metal cations, displaying high sensitivities with a limit of detections of 120, 81.7 and 79.2 nM, respectively. This suggests that these sensors can detect chronic Zn2+ concentration for freshwater (>1.84 μM), designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. DFT simulations performed on the more stable stacked conformations of unbound and Zn2+ bounded states suggested that the latter display higher density of excited states than the unbound sensors. Moreover, the stacked conformer of sensor 3 was significantly more stable as compared to sensors 1 and 2, which was attributed to a stronger Van Der Waals (VDW) interaction between DQA and 1,8-naphthalimide. The Zn2+ binding leads to enhanced electronic coupling between the HOMOs and LUMOs, making excited states more populated which then undergoes geometric relaxation before emitting light and relaxing back to the ground states. The lower energy separation (5.0 eV) between the HOMO and the first Zn2+ d-orbital in sensor 3 as compared to sensors 1 and 2 results in enhanced density of the generated states and subsequently higher intensity upon binding with Zn2+.

Optical chemosensors caused a revolution in the field of sensing due to their high specificity, sensitivity, and fast detection features. Imidazole derivatives have offered promising features in the literature as they bear suitable donor/acceptor groups for the selective analytes in the skeleton. In this work, an isoindole-imidazole containing a Schiff base chemosensor (1-{3-[(2-Diethylamino-ethylimino)-methyl]-2-hydroxy-5-methyl-phenyl}-2H-imidazo[5,1-a]isoindole-3,5-dione) was designed and synthesized. The complete sensing phenomena have been investigated by means of UV-Vis, fluorescence, lifetime measurement, FT-IR, NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic techniques. The optical properties of the synthesized ligand were investigated in 3:7 HEPES buffer:DMSO medium and found to be highly selective and sensitive toward Zn2+ ion through a fluorescence turn-on response with detection limit of 0.073 μm. Furthermore, this response is effective in gel form also. The competition studies reveal that the response of the probe for Zn2+ ion is unaffected by other relevant metal ions. The stoichiometric binding study was performed utilizing Job's method which indicated a 1:1 sensor–Zn2+ ensemble. Computational calculations were performed to pinpoint the mechanism of sensing. Kelp and laver are large economic macroalgae in China, which are rich in nutrients, especially Mn and Zn. Excessive intake of Mn and Zn can be harmful to the human body. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a convenient and efficient method to detect the contents of Mn and Zn in macroalgae. In this experiment, red carbon dots (R-CDs) doped with N and S elements were prepared by the thermal solvent method. The obtained R-CDs displayed excitation wavelength-independent fluorescent emission in the red spectral region. The R-CDs were used to construct a fluorescent probe for specific recognition of Mn2+ and Zn2+, achieving high-sensitivity detection of Mn2+ and Zn2+. The detection results showed a good linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and Mn2+ concentration, and the calculated detection limit was 0.23 nmol/L. For the detection of Zn2+, the detection limit was estimated as 19.1 nmol/L. At the same time, the content distribution of Mn and Zn elements in macroalgae produced in Fujian was investigated by the constructed fluorescence probe. It was found that kelp, laver, and their products are rich in Mn and Zn elements, and the content of Mn and Zn elements in laver is higher than that in kelp, which can be used as the optimal food supplement for Mn and Zn elements. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe NA for Zn2+ detection based on 1,8-naphthalene dicarboxylic anhydride and dimethylpyridine amine was synthesized. Probe NA has specific recognition and real-time monitoring functions for Zn2+. Based on Job's plotting curve, it is inferred that the coordination ratio between probe NA and Zn2+ is 3:1, forming a complex of [Zn(NA) 3 ]2+. The [Zn(NA) 3 ]2+ exhibits obvious yellow fluorescence at 550 nm. Probe NA can achieve quantitative detection of Zn2+ with a detection limit of 7.52 × 10−9 M, with high selectivity and anti-interference ability. Probe NA can stably exist in a wide pH range (2–10). This indicates that it can detect Zn2+ in complex environments. In addition, based on the low cytotoxicity, high sensitivity, and real-time monitoring characteristics of probe NA, we have expanded it to real-time monitoring of Zn2+ in organisms (HUVEC cells and live mice), as well as qualitative and quantitative detection of Zn2+ concentration in food and drugs. Biopolymers are an emerging class of novel materials with diverse applications and properties such as superior sustainability and tunability. Here, applications of biopolymers are described in the context of energy storage devices, namely lithium-based batteries, zinc-based batteries, and capacitors. Current demand for energy storage technologies calls for improved energy density, preserved performance overtime, and more sustainable end-of-life behavior. Lithium-based and zinc-based batteries often face anode corrosion from processes such as dendrite formation. Capacitors typically struggle with achieving functional energy density caused by an inability to efficiently charge and discharge. Both classes of energy storage need to be packaged with sustainable materials due to their potential leakages of toxic metals. Zinc deficiency or excess leads to neurological disorders. However, it is still unclear whether and how zinc ion regulates synapse formation. Here, we investigated the effect of zinc on synapse formation in a cultured neuron system, and found that synapse formation and synaptic transmission were regulated by zinc ions. Finally, we identified that PTPRM is the key gene involved in synapse formation regulated by zinc ions. Enzymes are catalysts of biological processes. Significant insight into their catalytic mechanisms has been obtained by relating site-directed mutagenesis studies to kinetic activity assays. However, revealing the detailed relationship between structural modifications and functional changes remains challenging owing to the lack of information on reaction intermediates and of a systematic way of connecting them to the measured kinetic parameters. Here, a systematic approach to investigate the effect of an active-site-residue mutation on a model enzyme, human carbonic anhydrase II (CA II), is described. Firstly, structural analysis is performed on the crystallographic intermediate states of native CA II and its V143I variant. The structural comparison shows that the binding affinities and configurations of the substrate (CO2) and product (HCO3−) are altered in the V143I variant and the water network in the water-replenishment pathway is restructured, while the proton-transfer pathway remains mostly unaffected. This structural information is then used to estimate the modifications of the reaction rate constants and the corresponding free-energy profiles of CA II catalysis. Finally, the obtained results are used to reveal the effect of the V143I mutation on the measured kinetic parameters (kcat and kcat/Km) at the atomic level. It is believed that the systematic approach outlined in this study may be used as a template to unravel the structure–function relationships of many other biologically important enzymes.

Bromide (Br−) ion conductivity in the LaOBr-type solid was successfully improved by partial replacement of the La3+ ion sites in LaOBr with lower valent Zn2+ and Sr2+ ion. Here, Zn2+ ion having high electronegativity was introduced together with Sr2+ ion to form large number of Br− ion vacancies for Br− ion migration, since higher electronegativity of cation is effective for building a strong bond with the surrounding anions inside the LaOBr lattice. As a result, a high concentration of Br− vacancies was successfully introduced with prohibiting the lattice collapse, and the extraordinary high Br− ion conductivity was obtained for the La0.80Sr0.15Zn0.05OBr0.80 solid.

β-Galactosidase plays an important role in medicine and dairy industry. In this study, a new glycoside hydrolase family 42 (GH42) β-galactosidase-encoding gene, gal42 , was cloned from a newly isolated marine bacterium Bacillus sp. BY02 and expressed in Escherichia coli. Structural characterization indicated that the encoding β-galactosidase, Gal42, is a homotrimer in solution, and homology modeling indicated that it retains the zinc binding sites of the Cys cluster. The reaction activity of Gal42 was significantly increased by Zn2+ (229.6%) and other divalent metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, and Co2+), while its activity was inhibited by EDTA (53.9%). Meanwhile, the thermo-stability of the Gal42 was also significantly enhanced by 5 and 10 mM of zinc ion supplement, which suggested that the "Cys-Zn" motif played important roles in both structural stability and catalytic function. Furthermore, Gal42 showed effective lactose hydrolysis activity, which makes the enzyme hydrolyze the lactose in milk effectively. Zinc-ion batteries have attracted significant attention for practical energy storage because of their uniqueness in terms of high capacity, safety and low cost. However, due to the instability of electrodes, large-scale practical applications are challenging. 3D electrodes with high porosity and specific surface area provide an opportunity to solve these problems, increasing their stability, energy density and mechanical properties. Herein, an ultrapressure-resistant self-supporting SiOC@Cu 2 Se 3D cathode was fabricated and applied in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The battery with the as-obtained cathode delivers a maximum compressive strength of 89.23 MPa and a toughness up to 16453 kJ m−3. In addition, the structural electrodes possess a specific capacity of 2.9 mWh cm−3 at a current density of 4.88 mA cm−3, demonstrating excellent deformation resistance and high specific capacity. Ex situ XRD and EDS show an interesting Cu 2 Se to Cu 2 O transformation during the first charge and discharge cycle. As expected, the electrode prepared in this paper provides a novel idea to manufacture 3D structured zinc-ion batteries with high specific capacity and excellent deformation resistance, fulfilling the demand for energy storage in astronautic industries and space exploration facing shock and high-pressure environments. Zinc ion (Zn2+) is a necessary transition metal ion in the human body and plays a vital role in biological systems. Therefore, it is meaningful for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of Zn2+. Herein, a "switch-on" fluorescence sensing platform for the detection of Zn2+ was successfully established. In this work, we report an optical nanoprobe with amino functional groups based on porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (PCN-NH2) through a simple treatment method. The modification of the salicylaldehyde (SA) through the C=N acts as a quencher of PCN-NH2 and the ligand of Zn2+ can effectively inhibit the fluorescence emission of PCN-NH2. The complex of porphyrin-based metal-organic framework and salicylaldehyde (PCN/SA) acts as the fluorescence sensing probe. The presence of Zn2+ results in the new emission peak at 448 nm due to the formation of a complex between Zn2+ and SA. The corresponding fluorescence signal changes were used to accurately detect the concentration of Zn2+. The fluorescence sensing platform shows advantages, including rapid response, high sensitivity, and excellent specificity with a linear detection range of Zn2+ between 0.1 and 250 μM, and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.07 μM. Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) attract increasing attention due to their low cost, safety, environmental protection, and potential application in stationary energy storage. However, the realization of high discharge voltage, high cycle stability, and high energy density is still the main challenge. Herein, we report a highly stable V2O3 sample synthesized by the reduction method of boron with high-temperature molten salt. In this method, molten salt was used as solvent to react between solid and liquid, and the ion velocity is significantly accelerated; the reaction temperature and time are effectively reduced. The electrochemical performance results show that V2O3 can provide a maximum discharge specific capacity of 207 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. The V2O3 electrode exhibits a high specific discharge capacity of 110 mAh g−1 after 2500 cycles at 3 A g−1; the capacity retention rate is 82.1%. Its electrochemical performance is obviously better than that of commercial V2O3. The electrochemical kinetic studies show that V2O3 electrode has a fast diffusion coefficient of zinc ions. This work provides an effective strategy to enhance the energy density and cycling stability of aqueous zinc ion-based batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrogenated natural rubber (HNR) was prepared by emulsion hydrogenation using different metal ion catalysts. The isothermal oxidation induction time (OIT) of raw rubber and the change of tensile properties of vulcanizate before and after thermal oxidative aging were studied. And the effect of metal ion catalysts on the thermal oxidative aging properties of HNR was investigated. The results showed that the copper ions in the hydrogen peroxide/hydrazine hydrate/copper ion catalytic system had great influence on the thermal oxidative aging properties of the materials. The tensile properties of HNR prepared with copper ions after thermal oxidative aging were higher than those of natural rubber latex, and the OIT was shortened to 2.5 min. The HNR sample prepared after replacing copper ions with zinc ions had better thermal oxidative aging properties, with the change rate of tensile strength reduced to 23.91%, the change rate of elongation at break reduced to 32.12%, and the OIT at 150 ℃ extended to 32.4 min after thermal oxidative aging at 100 ℃ for 72 h.

People are no longer satisfied with only comfortable textile clothing with advanced technology and elevated standard of living and, thus, are gradually preferring functional textiles. In the meanwhile, the spread of medical knowledge has educated the public about the antimicrobial concept. In this study, composed of different twist coefficients and different numbers of plies, the zinc ion twisted yarns are made into knitted fabrics. Next, the knitted fabrics are examined for water vapor transmission rate and antimicrobial efficacy. The test results indicate that the water vapor transmission rate is 1013 g/m2/day for 2Zn-0C-K and 981 g/m2/day for 3Zn-0C-K. However, a rise in the twist coefficient adversely affects the water vapor transmission rate. The fabric 2Zn-3C-K exhibits the maximal air permeability of 265 cm3/cm2/s and 3Zn-3C-K 186 cm3/cm2/s. Regardless of whether it is at OD600, colony count observation, or antibacterial rate, 3Zn-5C-K exhibits the maximal antibacterial rate with the value being 0.45 at OD600 and the optimal antimicrobial efficacy being 85%. To sum up, based on the interest of the test results, production cost, and manufacturing process evaluation, 2Zn-5C-K is the optimal nonwoven fabric that achieved the maximal effects. Kelp and laver are large economic macroalgae in China, which are rich in nutrients, especially Mn and Zn. Excessive intake of Mn and Zn can be harmful to the human body. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a convenient and efficient method to detect the contents of Mn and Zn in macroalgae. In this experiment, red carbon dots (R-CDs) doped with N and S elements were prepared by the thermal solvent method. The obtained R-CDs displayed excitation wavelength-independent fluorescent emission in the red spectral region. The R-CDs were used to construct a fluorescent probe for specific recognition of Mn2+ and Zn2+, achieving high-sensitivity detection of Mn2+ and Zn2+. The detection results showed a good linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and Mn2+ concentration, and the calculated detection limit was 0.23 nmol/L. For the detection of Zn2+, the detection limit was estimated as 19.1 nmol/L. At the same time, the content distribution of Mn and Zn elements in macroalgae produced in Fujian was investigated by the constructed fluorescence probe. It was found that kelp, laver, and their products are rich in Mn and Zn elements, and the content of Mn and Zn elements in laver is higher than that in kelp, which can be used as the optimal food supplement for Mn and Zn elements.

Optical chemosensors caused a revolution in the field of sensing due to their high specificity, sensitivity, and fast detection features. Imidazole derivatives have offered promising features in the literature as they bear suitable donor/acceptor groups for the selective analytes in the skeleton. In this work, an isoindole-imidazole containing a Schiff base chemosensor (1-{3-[(2-Diethylamino-ethylimino)-methyl]-2-hydroxy-5-methyl-phenyl}-2H-imidazo[5,1-a]isoindole-3,5-dione) was designed and synthesized. The complete sensing phenomena have been investigated by means of UV-Vis, fluorescence, lifetime measurement, FT-IR, NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic techniques. The optical properties of the synthesized ligand were investigated in 3:7 HEPES buffer:DMSO medium and found to be highly selective and sensitive toward Zn2+ ion through a fluorescence turn-on response with detection limit of 0.073 μm. Furthermore, this response is effective in gel form also. The competition studies reveal that the response of the probe for Zn2+ ion is unaffected by other relevant metal ions. The stoichiometric binding study was performed utilizing Job’s method which indicated a 1:1 sensor–Zn2+ ensemble. Computational calculations were performed to pinpoint the mechanism of sensing.

Abstract In order to keep rapid pace with increasing demand of wearable and miniature electronics, zinc‐based microelectrochemical energy storage devices (MESDs), as a promising candidate, have gained increasing attention attributed to low cost, environmental benign, and high performance. Herein, this review summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art advances of zinc‐based MESDs in microbatteries (MBs) and microsupercapacitors and highlights merits of cost effectiveness and high performance for miniaturized smart integrated systems. First, an introduction is given to present importance of zinc‐based MESDs. Second, current status with representative fiber, in‐plane and sandwiched configurations are illustrated in detail, particularly with a focus on the reasonable construction of multifunctional MBs and microsupercapacitors and deep understanding of energy storage mechanisms. Then, achievements for smart systems are overviewed to highlight environmental adaptability, integratable properties, and scalability in targeting applications. Finally, critical perspectives and challenges on the synergistic optimization of whole device are discussed to demonstrate forward‐looking developmental directions of zinc‐based MESDs.

Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy among men worldwide. However, conventional chemotherapy, such as taxane therapy, fails to exhibit efficient treatment for almost half of the patients. In this study, a nano-drug delivery system based on black phosphorus nanosheets (BP NSs) was developed, which was then employed as a multifunctional nanoplatform for targeted combinational chemo-photothermal therapy against prostate cancer. Zinc ion (Zn2+), which has been proven to be able to inhibit prostate cancer cell proliferation, was also introduced into this system. Zn2+ coordination could not only enhance the therapeutic effect of combined chemo-photothermal therapy, but also improve the intrinsic instability of BP NSs through the stabilization of its lone pair electrons. The in vivo study showed the outstanding performance of this system in targeted photothermal/chemotherapy of prostate cancer without side effect to normal organs.

A practical hydrazine-carbothioamide-based fluorescent chemosensor TCC (N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(thiophene-2-carbonyl)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide) was applied for Zn2+ detection. TCC exhibited selective fluorescence emission for Zn2+ and did not show any interference with other metal ions. In particular, TCC was utilized for the detection of Zn2+ in paper strips, zebrafish and real water samples. TCC could detect Zn2+ down to 0.39 μM in the solution phase and 51.13 μM in zebrafish. The association ratio between TCC and Zn2+ was determined to be 2:1 by ESI-mass and Job plot. The sensing mechanism of TCC for Zn2+ was illustrated to be a chelation-enhanced fluorescence process through spectroscopic experiments and theoretical calculations.

The lactosylated poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVIm-Lac) with various lactosylated degrees has been synthesized for the co-delivery of zinc ions (Zn) and plasmid DNA (pDNA). The Zn/DNA/PVIm-Lac complex formation has achieved the specific delivery of zinc ions to HepG2 cells. Especially, the resulting hepatocyte-specific delivery of zinc ions has increased the number of insulin receptors on the cell surface. Consequently, the Zn/DNA/PVIm-Lac complexes have suppressed insulin receptor internalization on the surface of the HepG2 cells, expecting to offer unique therapy to inhibit hepatic insulin clearance.

It is widely accepted that the addition of zinc leads to the formation of neurotoxic nonfibrillar aggregates of beta-amyloid peptides Aβ40 and Aβ42 and at the same time destabilizes amyloid fibrils. However, the mechanism of the effect of zinc on beta-amyloid is not fully understood. In this study, a fast zinc-induced aggregation of Aβ16 (as compared to a system without zinc) via the formation of Aβ16 dimers with one zinc ion coordinated in the metal-binding site 11EVHH14, followed by their polymerization, has been studied by molecular dynamics. The best aggregation was shown by the system composed of Aβ16 dimers bound by one zinc ion, with no additional zinc in solution. The presence of Aβ16 dimers was a major condition, sufficient for fast aggregation into larger complexes. It has been shown that the addition of zinc to a system with already formed dimers does not substantially affect the characteristics and rate of aggregation. At the same time, an excessive concentration of zinc at the early stages of the formation of conglomerates can negatively affect aggregation, since in systems where zinc ions occupied the 11EVHH14 coordination center and the His6 residue of every Aβ16 monomer, the aggregation proceeded more slowly and the resulting complexes were not as large as in the zinc-free Aβ system. Thus, this study has shown that the formation of Aβ16 dimers bound through zinc ions at the 11EVHH14 sites of the peptides plays an important role in the formation of neurotoxic non-fibrillar aggregates of beta-amyloid peptide Aβ16. The best energetically favorable structure has been obtained for the complex of two Aβ16 dimers with two zinc ions.

Bromide (Br−) ion conductivity in the LaOBr-type solid was successfully improved by partial replacement of the La3+ ion sites in LaOBr with lower valent Zn2+ and Sr2+ ion. Here, Zn2+ ion having high electronegativity was introduced together with Sr2+ ion to form large number of Br− ion vacancies for Br− ion migration, since higher electronegativity of cation is effective for building a strong bond with the surrounding anions inside the LaOBr lattice. As a result, a high concentration of Br− vacancies was successfully introduced with prohibiting the lattice collapse, and the extraordinary high Br− ion conductivity was obtained for the La0.80Sr0.15Zn0.05OBr0.80 solid. A 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.1PbTiO3 (PMNT) relaxor ferroelectric ceramic is a good dielectric and electrostrictive actuator material. Nevertheless, important engineering problems of further enhancing its electrostrictive effect and increasing its thermal stability must be solved to promote its applications. In this work, the Zn-doped PMNT (PMNT/xZn2+) ceramics were prepared by the niobite precursor synthesis method. The transition of the PMNT/xZn2+ ceramics from relaxor ferroelectric to normal ferroelectric was realized, increasing the residual polarization (Pr), saturation polarization (Pm), the ferroelectric-paraelectric transition temperature at εmax (Tm) and electric field induced strain (S) from x = 0.0 (Pr = 5.3294 μC/cm2, Pm = 26.6690 μC/cm2, Tm = 45°C, S = 1.08‰) to x = 8.0 (Pr = 19.9005 μC/cm2, Pm = 30.3718 μC/cm2, Tm = 70°C, S = 1.42‰). In addition, the upper temperature limit of the materials with a large electrostrictive effect (greater than 1‰) was extended from 40°C to 80°C. The main reason for these improved properties is that the magnesium ions were replaced by the highly reactive zinc ions at the B-site of the ferroelectric perovskite structure during the sintering and formed a certain amount of component segregation that increased the size of the polar nanoregions/domains and improved the polarizability of the materials.
