Abstract

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extra-galactic sources with unknown physical mechanisms. They emit millisecond-duration radio pulses with isotropic equivalent energy of $10^{36}\sim10^{41}$ ergs. This corresponds to a brightness temperature of FRB emission typically reaching the level of $10^{36}$ K, but can be as high as above $10^{40}$ K for sub-microsecond timescale structures, suggesting the presence of underlying coherent relativistic radiation mechanisms. polarization carries the key information to understand the physical origin of FRBs, with linear polarization usually tracing the geometric configuration of magnetic fields and circular polarization probing both intrinsic radiation mechanisms and propagation effects. Here we show that the repeating sources FRB 20201124A emits $90.9\pm 1.1\%$ circularly polarized radio pulses. Such a high degree of circular polarization was unexpected in theory and unprecedented in observation in the case of FRBs, since such a high degree of circular polarization was only common among Solar or Jovian radio activities, attributed to the sub-relativistic electrons. We note that there is no obvious correlation between the degree of circular polarization and burst fluence. Besides the high degree of circular polarization, we also detected rapid swing and orthogonal jump in the position angle of linear polarization. The detection of the high degree circular polarization in FRB 20201124A, together with its linear polarization properties that show orthogonal modes, place strong constraints on FRB physical mechanisms, calling for an interplay between magnetospheric radiation and propagation effects in shaping the observed FRB radiation., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in National Science Review

Abstract

We report the first detection of polarization angle (PA) orthogonal jumps, a phenomenon previously only observed from radio pulsars, from a fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A. We find three cases of orthogonal jumps in over two thousand bursts, all resembling those observed in pulsar single pulses. We propose that the jumps are due to the superposition of two orthogonal emission modes that could only be produced in a highly magnetized plasma, and they are caused by the line of sight sweeping across a rotating magnetosphere. The shortest jump timescale is of the order of one-millisecond, which hints that the emission modes come from regions smaller than the light cylinder of most pulsars or magnetars. This discovery provides convincing evidence that FRB emission originates from the complex magnetosphere of a magnetar, suggesting an FRB emission mechanism that is analogous to radio pulsars despite a huge luminosity difference between two types of objects., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted by APJL

Recent research has highlighted the role of various genes in the pathogenesis and progression of OA, with nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) emerging as a critical player. NRF2, a vital transcription factor, plays a key role in regulating the OA microenvironment and slowing the disease’s progression. It modulates the expression of several antioxidant enzymes, such as Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and NAD(P)H oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), among others, which help reduce oxidative stress. Furthermore, NRF2 inhibits the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, thereby decreasing inflammation, joint pain, and the breakdown of cartilage extracellular matrix, while also mitigating cell aging and death. This review discusses NRF2’s impact on oxidative stress, inflammation, cell aging, and various cell death modes (such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and ferroptosis) in OA-affected chondrocytes. The role of NRF2 in OA macrophages, and synovial fibroblasts was also discussed. It also covers NRF2’s role in preserving the cartilage extracellular matrix and alleviating joint pain. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of NRF2’s protective mechanisms in OA, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target and underscoring its significance in the development of novel treatment strategies for OA.Keywords: nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, osteoarthritis, chondrocytes, inflammation, oxidative stress

Abstract

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

However, there is a lack of analytical and descriptive investigations on the trajectory, essential research directions, current research scenario, pivotal focuses, and future perspectives. This research aims to provide a thorough update on the progress in AI for MSK diseases over the last 24 years.Methods: Data from the Web of Science database, covering January 1, 2000, to March 1, 2024, was analyzed. Using advanced analytical tools, we conducted comprehensive scientometric and visual analyses.Results: The findings highlight the predominant influence of the USA, which accounts for 28.53% of the total publications and plays a key role in shaping research in this field. Notable productivity was seen at institutions such as the University of California, San Francisco, Harvard Medical School, and Seoul National University. Valentina Pedoia is identified as the most prolific contributor. Scientific Reports had the highest number of publications in this area. The five most significant diseases are joint diseases, bone fractures, bone tumors, cartilage diseases, and spondylitis.Conclusion: This comprehensive scientometric assessment benefits both experienced researchers and newcomers, providing quick access to essential information and fostering the development of innovative concepts in this field. There is a significant need for a thorough scientometric analysis that recapitulates the relationship between PCD and OA. This study aimed to collect articles and reviews focusing on PCD in OA, extracting data from January 1st, 2013, to October 31st, 2023, using the Web of Science. Various tools, including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Pajek, Scimago Graphica, and the R package, were employed for scientometric and visualization analyses. Notably, China, the USA, and South Korea emerged as major contributors, collectively responsible for more than 85% of published papers and significantly influencing research in this field. Among different institutions, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi’an Jiao Tong University, and Zhejiang University exhibited the highest productivity. Prolific authors included Wang Wei, Wang Jing, and Zhang Li. Osteoarthritis and Cartilage had the most publications in this area. Keywords related to PCD in OA prominently highlighted ‘chondrocytes’, ‘inflammation’, and ‘oxidative stress’, recognized as pivotal mechanisms contributing to PCD within OA. This study presents the first comprehensive scientometric analysis, offering a broad perspective on the knowledge framework and evolving patterns concerning PCD in relation to OA over the last decade. Such insights can aid researchers in comprehensively understanding this field and provide valuable directions for future explorations. The T2DM combined with atherosclerosis guinea pig models were established in the model and intervention groups. After successful modeling, spleen-and-stomach-tonifying, yin-fire-purging, and yang-raising decoction were administered intragastrically to the intervention group, while the same volume of normal saline was administered via gavage to the blank and model groups. After 6 weeks of continuous gavage, guinea pigs were sacrificed in all groups, the colon contents were obtained, and the diversity and structural differences of intestinal microbiota were analyzed via bioinformatics. Serum was collected to detect differences in lipids, TMAO, oxidative stress, and inflammation markers between groups.Results: Compared to the blank group, the species diversity of the intestinal microbiota in the model and intervention groups was significantly reduced. Based on the results of Analysis of Similarities and Multiple Response Permutation Procedure, the microbiota structure of the intervention group was closer to that of the blank group. After modeling, the blood lipid levels of guinea pigs increased significantly, and drug intervention significantly reduced the levels of TC, TG, and LDL-C (P < 0.05). TMAO expression was significantly increased after modeling (P < 0.05), while drug intervention reduced TMAO expression (P < 0.05). Abstract

We report the phase-connected timing ephemeris, polarization pulse profiles, Faraday rotation measurements, and Rotating-Vector-Model (RVM) fitting results of twelve millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in the Commensal radio Astronomy FAST survey (CRAFTS). The timing campaigns were carried out with FAST and Arecibo over three years. Eleven of the twelve pulsars are in neutron star - white dwarf binary systems, with orbital periods between 2.4 and 100 d. Ten of them have spin periods, companion masses, and orbital eccentricities that are consistent with the theoretical expectations for MSP - Helium white dwarf (He WD) systems. The last binary pulsar (PSR J1912$-$0952) has a significantly smaller spin frequency and a smaller companion mass, the latter could be caused by a low orbital inclination for the system. Its orbital period of 29 days is well within the range of orbital periods where some MSP - He WD systems have shown anomalous eccentricities, however, the eccentricity of PSR J1912$-$0952 is typical of what one finds for the remaining MSP - He WD systems., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepted

Laminin genes were recently identified to affect the brain’s overall thickness through neurogenesis, differentiation, and migration in depression. This study aims to explore the effects of the LAMA2’s single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), a subunit gene of laminin, on the detected brain regions of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).Methods: The study included 89 patients with MDD and 60 healthy controls with T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging and blood samples for genotyping. The interactions between LAMA2 gene SNPs and diagnosis as well as duration of illness (DOI) were explored on brain measures controlled for age, gender, and site.Results: The right transverse temporal gyrus and right parahippocampal gyrus showed reduced thickness in MDD. Almost all seven LAMA2 SNPs showed significant interactions with diagnosis on both gyrus (corrected p < 0.05 or trending). Abstract

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed millisecond-duration radio bursts. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1863 bursts in 82 hr over 54 days from the repeating source FRB~20201124A. These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which probes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarisation in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarisation of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarisations as well as polarisation angle as a function of wavelength were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetised immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (au; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy reveal a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low stellar density, interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. Abstract

The dispersive sweep of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been used to probe the ionized baryon content of the intergalactic medium, which is assumed to dominate the total extragalactic dispersion. While the host galaxy contributions to dispersion measure (DM) appear to be small for most FRBs, in at least one case there is evidence for an extreme magneto-ionic local environment and a compact persistent radio source. Here we report the detection and localization of the repeating FRB 20190520B, which is co-located with a compact, persistent radio source and associated with a dwarf host galaxy of high specific star formation rate at a redshift $z=0.241\pm0.001$. The estimated host galaxy DM $\approx 903^{+72}_{-111}$ pc cm$^{-3}$, nearly an order of magnitude higher than the average of FRB host galaxies, far exceeds the DM contribution of the intergalactic medium. Abstract

We report the follow-up of 10 pulsars discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio-Telescope (FAST) during its commissioning. The pulsars were discovered at a frequency of 500-MHz using the ultra-wide-band (UWB) receiver in drift-scan mode, as part of the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS). We carried out the timing campaign with the 100-m Effelsberg radio-telescope at L-band around 1.36 GHz. Along with 11 FAST pulsars previously reported, FAST seems to be uncovering a population of older pulsars, bordering and/or even across the pulsar death-lines. We report here two sources with notable characteristics. PSR J1951$+$4724 is a young and energetic pulsar with nearly 100% of linearly polarized flux density and visible up to an observing frequency of 8 GHz. PSR J2338+4818, a mildly recycled pulsar in a 95.2-d orbit with a Carbon-Oxygen white dwarf (WD) companion of $\gtrsim 1\rm{M}_{\odot}$, based on estimates from the mass function. This system is the widest WD binary with the most massive companion known to-date. Conspicuous discrepancy was found between estimations based on NE2001 and YMW16 electron density models, which can be attributed to under-representation of pulsars in the sky region between Galactic longitudes $70^o

Abstract

The event rate, energy distribution, and time-domain behaviour of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) contains essential information regarding their physical nature and central engine, which are as yet unknown. As the first precisely-localized source, FRB 121102 has been extensively observed and shows non-Poisson clustering of bursts over time and a power-law energy distribution. However, the extent of the energy distribution towards the fainter end was not known. Here we report the detection of 1652 independent bursts with a peak burst rate of 122~hr^{-1}, in 59.5 hours spanning 47 days. A peak in the isotropic equivalent energy distribution is found to be ~4.8 x 10^{37} erg at 1.25~GHz, below which the detection of bursts is suppressed. The burst energy distribution is bimodal, and well characterized by a combination of a log-normal function and a generalized Cauchy function. The large number of bursts in hour-long spans allow sensitive periodicity searches between 1 ms and 1000 s. The non-detection of any periodicity or quasi-periodicity poses challenges for models involving a single rotating compact object. In cold atom experiments, each image of light refracted and absorbed by an atomic ensemble carries a remarkable amount of information. Numerous imaging techniques including absorption, fluorescence, and phase-contrast are commonly used. Other techniques such as off-resonance defocused imaging (ORDI), where an in-focus image is deconvolved from a defocused image, have been demonstrated but find only niche applications. The ORDI inversion process introduces systematic artifacts because it relies on regularization to account for missing information at some spatial frequencies. In the present work, we extend ORDI to use multiple cameras simultaneously at degrees of defocus, eliminating the need for regularization and its attendant artifacts. We demonstrate this technique by imaging Bose-Einstein condensates, and show that the statistical uncertainties in the measured column density using the multiple-camera off-resonance defocused (MORD) imaging method are competitive with absorption imaging near resonance and phase contrast imaging far from resonance. Abstract

We present a detailed single-pulse analysis for PSR B1929+10 based on observations with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The main pulse and interpulse are found to be modulated with a periodicity of $\sim12$ times the pulsar's rotational period ($P$). The $\sim12P$ modulation is confirmed as a periodic amplitude modulation instead of systematic drifting. The periodic amplitude modulation in the IP is found to be anti-correlated with that in the weak preceding component of the MP (MP_I), but correlated with that in the first two components of the MP (MP_II), which implies that the modulation patterns in the IP and the MP are phase-locked. What is more interesting is that the modulation in MP_II is delayed that in the IP by about 1P. Furthermore, high sensitivity observations by FAST reveal that weak emission exists between the MP and the IP. In addition, we confirm that the separation between the IP and the MP is independent of radio frequency. The above results are a conundrum for pulsar theories and cannot be satisfactorily explained by the current pulsar models. Therefore, our results observed with FAST provide an opportunity to probe the structure of pulsar emission and the neutron star's magnetosphere., Comment: 13 pages 12 figures

Non-invasive characteristics such as gender, age, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were collected and used as input variables to train and evaluate ML models for MetS identification. Several ML models were used for MetS identification, including logistic regression (LR), k-nearest neighbors algorithm (k-NN), naive bayesian (NB), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM).Results: Our ML models all showed good performance in the 10-fold cross-validation except for the SVM model. In the external validation, the NB model exhibited the best performance with an AUC of 0.976, accuracy of 0.923, sensitivity of 98.32%, and specificity of 91.32%.Conclusion: This study proposed a new non-invasive method for early and low-cost identification of MetS by using ML models. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to compare the differences in primary patency between the treatment groups.Results: In total, 132 of 139 enrolled patients (94.96%) achieved technical success following treatment. The perioperative mortality rate was 1.44% (2/139), and postoperative complications occurred in two patients. Among the patients who successfully underwent surgery, 120 underwent endovascular treatment (110 patients with stenting and 10 patients with thrombolysis before stenting), 10 underwent hybrid surgery, and 2 underwent open surgery. The follow-up data were compared between the endovascular and hybrid groups. At the end of the follow-up period, the patency rates in the hybrid and endovascular groups were 100% and 89.17% (107/120), respectively. The endovascular group achieved primary patency rates of 94.12%, 92.44%, and 89.08% at 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively, respectively, whereas the primary patency rate remained at 100% in the hybrid group, with no significant variation between the endovascular and hybrid groups (P = 0.289). The endovascular group was further divided into a stent subgroup (110 patients) and a thrombolysis/stent subgroup (10 patients), and no prominent variation was noted in the primary patency between the two subgroups (P = 0.276).Conclusion: Although open surgery is the gold standard treatment for TASC II D-type AIOD, endovascular and hybrid treatments are feasible and effective. Abstract

Anderson localization is a single particle localization phenomena in disordered media that is accompanied by an absence of diffusion. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) describes an interaction between a particle's spin and its momentum that directly affects its energy dispersion, for example creating dispersion relations with gaps and multiple local minima. We show theoretically that combining one-dimensional spin-orbit coupling with a transverse Zeeman field suppresses the effects of disorder, thereby increasing the localization length and conductivity. This increase results from a suppression of back scattering between states in the gap of the SOC dispersion relation. Here, we focus specifically on the interplay of disorder from an optical speckle potential and SOC generated by two-photon Raman processes in quasi-1D Bose-Einstein condensates. We first describe back-scattering using a Fermi's golden rule approach, and then numerically confirm this picture by solving the time-dependent 1D Gross Pitaevskii equation for a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate with SOC and disorder. We find that on the 10's of millisecond time scale of typical cold atom experiments moving in harmonic traps, initial states with momentum in the zero-momentum SOC gap evolve with negligible back-scattering, while without SOC these same states rapidly localize., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present timing solutions and analyses of 11 pulsars discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). These pulsars were discovered using an ultra-wide bandwidth receiver in drift-scan observations made during the commissioning phase of FAST, and were then confirmed and timed using the 64-m Parkes Radio Telescope. Each pulsar has been observed over a span of at least one year. Highlighted discoveries include PSR J0344-0901, which displays mode-changing behaviour and may belong to the class of so-called `swooshing' pulsars (alongside PSRs B0919+06 and B1859+07); PSR J0803-0942, whose emission is almost completely linearly polarised; and PSRs J1900-0134 and J1945+1211, whose well defined polarisation angle curves place stringent constraints on their emission geometry. We further discuss the detectability of these pulsars by earlier surveys, and highlight lessons learned from our work in carrying out confirmation and monitoring observations of pulsars discovered by a highly sensitive telescope, many of which may be applicable to next-generation pulsar surveys. Abstract

Glitches correspond to sudden jumps of rotation frequency ($\nu$) and its derivative ($\dot{\nu}$) of pulsars, the origin of which remains not well understood yet, partly because the jump processes of most glitches are not well time-resolved. There are three large glitches of the Crab pulsar, detected in 1989, 1996 and 2017, which were found to have delayed spin-up processes before the normal recovery processes. Here we report two additional glitches of the Crab pulsar occurred in 2004 and 2011 for which we discovered delayed spin up processes, and present refined parameters of the largest glitch occurred in 2017. The initial rising time of the glitch is determined as $<0.48$ hour. We also carried out a statistical study of these five glitches with observed spin-up processes. The two glitches occurred in 2004 and 2011 have delayed spin-up time scales ($\tau_{1}$) of $1.7\pm0.8$\,days and $1.6\pm0.4$\,days, respectively. We find that the $\Delta{\nu}$ vs. $|\Delta{\dot\nu}|$ relation of these five glitches is similar to those with no detected delayed spin-up process, indicating that they are similar to the others in nature except that they have larger amplitudes. For these five glitches, the amplitudes of the delayed spin-up process ($|\Delta{\nu}_{\rm d1}|$) and recovery process ($\Delta{\nu}_{\rm d2}$), their time scales ($\tau_{1}$, $\tau_{2}$), and permanent changes in spin frequency ($\Delta{\nu}_{\rm p}$) and total frequency step ($\Delta{\nu}_{\rm g}$) have positive correlations. From these correlations, we suggest that the delayed spin-up processes are common for all glitches, but are too short and thus difficult to be detected for most glitches., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Cation-disordered rocksalt (DRX) materials have emerged as a class of novel high-capacity cathodes for Li-ion batteries. However, the commercialization of DRX cathodes will require reducing their capacity decay, which has been associated with oxygen loss during cycling. Recent studies show that fluorination of DRX cathodes can effectively reduce oxygen loss and improve cycling stability; however, the underlying atomic-scale mechanisms remain elusive. Herein, using a combination of electrochemical measurements, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy, the correlation between the electrochemical properties and structural evolution in Mn-redox-based DRX cathodes, Li1.2Ti0.4–xMn0.4+xO2.0-xFx (x = 0 and 0.2) is examined. It is found that fluorination strongly suppresses structural amorphization and void formation initiated from the particle surface, therefore greatly enhancing the cyclability of the cathode. A novel rocksalt-to-spinel-like structural transformation in the DRX bulk is further revealed, which surprisingly contributes to a gradual capacity increase during cycling. The results provide important insight for the design of novel DRX cathodes with high capacity and long cycle life.

Grayscale ultrasound (US) of the rectus femoris was performed to measure thickness (RFthick) and cross-sectional area (RFcsa). Shear wave elastography was used to determine the mean elasticity index (SWEmean) of the rectus femoris (SWERFmean), vastus lateralis (SWEVLmean) and vastus medialis (SWEVMmean). Clinical features included dyspnea index score (modified British Medical Research Council (MMRC) score), COPD Assessment Test (CAT), the Five-Repetition Sit-to-Stand Test (5STS) and the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). We compared the differences between US parameters and SWEmean in healthy controls and COPD patients. We also described the correlation between US parameters, SWEmean and clinical features of patients with COPD.Results: The intra-observer repeatability for the performance of using SWE to measure quadriceps stiffness was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)> 0.75, p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in the SWEmean of the quadriceps (p < 0.001), but no significant difference in terms of RFthic and RFcsa (p > 0.05) between healthy controls and COPD patients. The SWERFmean was positively correlated with the 6MWT (r = 0.959, p < 0.001), and negatively related to the mMRC (r=− 0.825, p < 0.001), CAT (r=− 0.993, p < 0.001) and 5STS (r=− 0.936, p < 0.001). However, the RFthic, RFcsa, SWEVLmean and SWEVMmean were not correlated with clinical features (p > 0.05).Conclusion: As a supplement to US, SWE reflects changes of stiffness in the quadriceps of COPD patients, and can expanding the dimension of US for assessing the quadriceps. We trap individual 1D Bose gases and obtain the associated equation of state by combining calibrated confining potentials with in-situ density profiles. Our observations agree well with the exact Yang-Yang 1D thermodynamic solutions under the local density approximation. Abstract

We describe PSR J1926-0652, a pulsar recently discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Using sensitive single-pulse detections from FAST and long-term timing observations from the Parkes 64 m radio telescope, we probed phenomena on both long and short timescales. The FAST observations covered a wide frequency range from 270 to 800 MHz, enabling individual pulses to be studied in detail. The pulsar exhibits at least four profile components, short-term nulling lasting from 4 to 450 pulses, complex subpulse drifting behaviors and intermittency on scales of tens of minutes. While the average band spacing P 3 is relatively constant across different bursts and components, significant variations in the separation of adjacent bands are seen, especially near the beginning and end of a burst. Band shapes and slopes are quite variable, especially for the trailing components and for the shorter bursts. We show that for each burst the last detectable pulse prior to emission ceasing has different properties compared to other pulses. These complexities pose challenges for the classic carousel-type models.

Abstract

Layered LiNi0.4Mn0.4Co0.18Ti0.02O2 cathode powders were ball-milled for various lengths of time. The structural properties of the pristine and milled powders, which have different particle sizes were examined with X-ray diffraction, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy to determine the effect of milling on structure. Electrochemical testing in halfcells was also carried out and shows that milling plays an important role in the performance of these cathode materials; as milling time increases, there is a decrease in initial discharge capacity. The first cycle irreversible capacity also increases for milled samples, as does capacity loss upon cycling under some regimes.The electrochemical degradation is strongly correlated with damage to the lamellar structure of cathode particles induced by milling, and lithium carbonate formation.

Here, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of SMC for treating insomnia using both scales and polysomnography (PSG).Patients and Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was performed. Twenty-six insomnia patients randomly received SMC (n = 11) or placebo (n = 15) for four weeks. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), 9-items Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), 7-items Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) were applied at the baseline and the 2nd, 4th week after treatment. Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale was used to assess adverse reactions. We used PSG to record and analyze sleep features at baseline and after four weeks.Results: PSQI, ISI, PHQ-9, HAMD-17, and HAMA scores decreased significantly after SMC treatment. Also, the total sleep time, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep latency, stage 2 sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep, and sleep efficiency improved significantly after SMC treatment. In the placebo group, the only significant change was the decrease of PHQ-9 at week-2. Abstract

We report identification of the optical counterpart to the companion of the millisecond pulsar J2317+1439. At the timing position of the pulsar, we find an object with $g=22.96\pm0.05$, $r=22.86\pm0.04$ and $i=22.82\pm0.05$. The magnitudes and colors of the object are consistent with it being a white dwarf. By comparing with white dwarf cooling models, we estimate that it has a mass of $0.39^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$ M$_{\odot}$, an effective temperature of $8077^{+550}_{-470}$ K and a cooling age of $10.9\pm0.3$ Gyr. Combining our results with published constraints on the orbital parameters obtained through pulsar timing, we estimate the pulsar mass to be $3.4^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ M$_{\odot}$. The emission geometries, e.g. the emission region height, the beam shape, and radius-to-frequency mapping, are important predictions of pulsar radiation model. The multi-band radio observations carry such valuable information. In this paper, we study two bright pulsars, (PSRs B0329+54 and B1642-03) and observe them in high frequency (2.5 GHz, 5 GHz, and 8 GHz). The newly acquired data together with historical archive provide an atlas of multi-frequency profiles spanning from 100 MHz to 10 GHz. We study the frequency evolution of pulse profiles and the radiation regions with the these data. We firstly fit the pulse profiles with Gaussian functions to determine the phase of each component, and then calculate the radiation altitudes of different emission components and the radiation regions. We find that the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model can reproduce the radiation geometry of these two pulsars. But for PSR B0329+54 the radiation can be generated in either annular gap (AG) or core gap (CG), while the radiation of PSR B1642-03 can only be generated in the CG. This difference is caused by the inclination angle and the impact angle of these two pulsars. The relation of beaming angle (the angle between the radiation direction and the magnetic axis) and the radiation altitudes versus frequency is also presented by modelling the beam-frequency evolution in the ICS model. The multi-band pulse profiles of these two pulsars can be described well by the ICS model combined with the CG and AG.

Abstract Severe pulmonary hypertension (PH) is not common even in patients with severe chronic lung disease (CLD) but data on hemodynamic characteristics among patients with severe CLD is scarce. All adult patients who had right heart catheterization for lung transplant assessment for severe CLD in the only lung transplant service and for PAH management in the only tertiary pulmonary hypertension service in Hong Kong from 2010 to 2020 were included and classified into CLD group and PAH group. Patient characteristics and hemodynamic parameters were analyzed. There were 153 patients included with 106 patients in the CLD group and 47 in the PAH group. There were only 19.8% of the patients in the CLD group had severe pulmonary hypertension. The involvement of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in human cancers attracts much concern. The intention of this study was to investigate the expression of circ_101341 and explore its function in ccRCC.Materials and Methods: The expression of circ_101341, miR-411 and Egl nine homolog 3 (EGLN3) was measured using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Cell proliferation was assessed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and colony formation assay. Cell migration and invasion were monitored by transwell assay. Xenograft model was established to explore the role of circ_101341 in vivo. The protein levels of E-cadherin (E-cad), N-cadherin (N-cad), matrix metalloprotein-9 (MMP9) and EGLN3 were detected by Western blot. Bioinformatic analysis was conducted using Circinteractome and starBase. The targeted relationship was verified using dual-luciferase reporter assay, RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay and RNA pull-down assay.Results: The expression of circ_101341 was elevated in ccRCC tissues and cells. Functionally, circ_101341 knockdown depleted proliferation, migration and invasion of ccRCC cells in vitro and restricted tumor growth in vivo. Circ_101341 directly targeted miR-411, and miR-411 inhibition revised the inhibitory effects of circ_101341 knockdown on proliferation, migration and invasion in ccRCC cells. Abstract

Hybrid glasses connect emerging fields of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the glass-formation, amorphization, and melting processes of these structurally diverse and chemically versatile systems. Most zeolites, including MOFs, amorphize around the glass transition, devitrifying and then melting at much higher temperatures. The relationship between the two processes has so far not been investigated. Herein we show how heating first results in a low density perfect glass, following an order-order transition, leading to a super-strong liquid of low fragility that dynamically controls MOF collapse. A subsequent order-disorder transition creates a high density liquid of greater fragility. After crystallization and melting, subsequent cooling results in a stable glass virtually identical to the high density phase. Furthermore, the wide-ranging melting temperatures of different MOFs suggest these can be differentiated by topology. Abstract

Carbonation and chloride attack are the main causes of the corrosion of rebars in concrete. In the past, attempts have been made to develop various sensors to monitor these deterioration mechanisms. However, amongst the most popular sensors, the Electrical Resistance Sensor cannot differentiate each individual deterioration mechanism, whilst the long term stability and the need for recalibration are the two main limitations of the Fibre Optical Sensor. The optical fibre Raman system, combining the fingerprint characterisation capacity of Raman spectroscopy and the light transmission capacity of optical fibres, offers the potential for monitoring the deterioration mechanisms in concrete. This thesis reports a detailed study to investigate the qualitative and quantitative working capacity of the optical fibre Raman system for characterising carbonation and chloride attack in cementitious materials. Two optical fibre Raman systems were developed to characterise the deterioration mechanisms in hardened PC and PFA/GGBS blended pastes, namely, a ‘coaxial’ optical fibre Raman system for characterising carbonation and a ‘transmission’ optical fibre Raman system for characterising chloride attack, respectively. The results showed that the calcium carbonate polymorphs (e.g., calcite, vaterite and aragonite) formed during the carbonation were successfully identified and the variation in the content of calcium carbonates over depth was also clearly differentiated and verified by bench-mounted Raman and Thermogravimetry (TG) analyses, demonstrating its good potential for establishing carbonation profiles. On the other hand, the chlorides and the chloride content were also successfully established and verified by bench-mounted Raman spectroscopy and chloride meter. The results from this thesis demonstrate a good potential for the optical fibre Raman system to be developed into a novel sensor system for monitoring the durability of concrete structures. However, the insufficient working capacity and the interferences from the addition of PFA and GGBS still need to be addressed in the future.

CT findings and clinical data, including age, gender, clinical symptoms, serological biomarkers, tumor size, and tumor location, were compared between SRCC and AC. CT texture features were quantified on portal phase images using three-dimensional analysis. A list of texture parameters was generated with MaZda software for the classification of tumors. The texture features, clinical data and CT findings were statistically analyzed for the discrimination ability of SRCC and AC, and the potential predictive parameters that may be used to differentiate the two groups were subsequently tested using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and logistic regression analyses. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) provided a range of values for establishing the cutoff value, as well as the sensitivity and specificity of prediction for each significant variable.Results: SRCC occurred more often in men than AC did (80.39% vs 49.02%, P < 0.01). The patients were younger in the SRCC group than in the AC group, without a statistically significant difference (55.84 vs 59.20 years, P = 0.216). There were no significant differences in the clinical symptoms, tumor size, or tumor location between the two groups (P=0.505, P=0.19, P=0.843, respectively). The elevation of serological biomarker CA724 was more common in SRCC than in AC (P< 0.001). Perc.01%3D, Perc.10%3D and s(1,0,0) SumAverg were lower in the SRCC group than in the AC group during the portal phase, with the areas under curve (AUCs) of 0.892–0.929, sensitivity of 76.5–84.3% and specificity of 88.2–96.1%. Second, we knocked down HPV16 E7 in SiHa sphere cells and overexpressed HPV16 E7 in U2OS sphere cells. Third, we used RNA-seq analysis and Western blotting to screen and identify the expression of differentially expressed genes in SiHa cells with HPV16 E7 knockdown.Results: We found that both SiHa and CaSki cells grew as cell spheres (oncospheres) and shared the properties of cancer stem cells, including high expression of stem cell marker OCT4 and SOX2, self-renew, and resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. The stem-like properties were deprived when HPV16 E7 was knocked down in SiHa sphere cells and maintained when HPV16 E7 was over-expressed in U2OS sphere cells. APH1B was up-regulated, among differential expression genes, in SiHa cells with HPV16 E7 knockdown and modulated cellular stemness and SiHa sphere cells with APH1B knockdown regained the stem-like properties deprived by E7 inhibition.Conclusion: HPV16 E7 possesses the capacity to maintain cellular stemness and APH1B may participate in this process in cervical cancer sphere cells.Keywords: cervical cancer, HPV, cancer stem cell, APH1B
