Past studies have shown that activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) kinase (MEK)/ERK is a common cause for resistance of melanoma cells to death receptor–mediated or mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. We report in this study that inhibition of the MEK/ERK pathway also sensitizes melanoma cells to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced apoptosis, and this is mediated, at least in part, by caspase-4 activation and is associated with inhibition of the ER chaperon glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) expression. Treatment with the ER stress inducer tunicamycin or thapsigargin did not induce significant apoptosis in the majority of melanoma cell lines, but resistance to these agents was reversed by the MEK inhibitor U0126 or MEK1 small interfering RNA (siRNA). Induction of apoptosis by ER stress when MEK was inhibited was caspase dependent with caspase-4, caspase-9, and caspase-3 being involved. Caspase-4 seemed to be the apical caspase in that caspase-4 activation occurred before activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 and that inhibition of caspase-4 by a specific inhibitor or siRNA blocked activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3, whereas inhibition of caspase-9 or caspase-3 did not inhibit caspase-4 activation. Moreover, overexpression of Bcl-2 inhibited activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 but had minimal effect on caspase-4 activation. Inhibition of MEK/ERK also resulted in down-regulation of GRP78, which was physically associated with caspase-4, before and after treatment with tunicamycin or thapsigargin. In addition, siRNA knockdown of GRP78 increased ER stress-induced caspase-4 activation and apoptosis. Taken together, these results seem to have important implications for new treatment strategies in melanoma by combinations of agents that induce ER stress and inhibitors of the MEK/ERK pathway. BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal involvement in Behçet's disease (GIBD) and Crohn’s disease (CD) are inflammatory diseases sharing a considerable number of similarities. However, different from CD, the operative and postoperative management of GIBD remains largely empirical because of the lack of comprehensive treatment guidelines. AIM To compare surgical patients with GIBD and those with CD in a medical center and identify notable clinical features and effective postoperative treatment for surgical patients with GIBD. METHODS We searched patients diagnosed with CD and GIBD who underwent operations for gastrointestinal complications from 2009 to 2015 at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. A total of 10 surgical patients with GIBD and 106 surgical patients with CD were recruited. Information including demographic data, medication, and operative and postoperative parameters were collected and analyzed. As the incidence of surgical GIBD is low, their detailed medical records were reviewed and compared to previous studies. Moreover, the prognoses of CD and GIBD were evaluated respectively between groups treated with biological and non-biological agents. RESULTS Indication for first surgery was often acute intestinal perforation for GIBD patients (7/10 vs 0/106, P < 0.001), whereas intestinal fistulae (0/10 vs 44/106, P = 0.013) and ileus (0/10 vs 40/106, P = 0.015) were the indications for surgical CD patients. Approximately 40% of patients with GIBD and 23.6% of patients with CD developed postoperative complications, 50% of patients with GIBD and 38.7% of patients with CD had recurrence postoperatively, and 40% (4/10) of patients with GIBD and 26.4% (28/106) of patients with CD underwent reoperations. The average period of postoperative recurrence was 7.87 mo in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and 10.43 mo in patients with CD, whereas the mean duration from first surgery to reoperation was 5.75 mo in BD patients and 18.04 mo in CD patients. Surgical patients with GIBD more often used corticosteroids (6/10 vs 7/106, P < 0.001) and thalidomide (7/10 vs 9/106, P < 0.001) postoperatively, whereas surgical patients with CD often used infliximab (27/106), azathioprine, or 6-mercaptopurine (74/106) for maintenance therapy. CONCLUSION Patients suffering GIBD require surgery mostly under emergency situations, which may be more susceptible to recurrence and reoperation and need more aggressive postoperative treatment than patients with CD.

Dual-modal magnetic resonance/fluorescent imaging (MRI/FI) attracts moreandmoreattentions in diagnosis of tumors. A corresponding dual-modal imaging agent with sufficient tumor sensitivity and specificity should be matched to improve imaging quality. Tripeptide (RGD) and pentapeptide (YIGSR) were selected as the tumor-targeting groups and attached to gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) and rhodamine B (RhB), and then make two novel polypeptide-based derivatives (RGD-Gd-DTPA-RhB and YIGSR-Gd-DTPA-RhB), respectively. These derivatives were further characterized and their properties, such as cell uptake, cell cytotoxicity, MRI and FI assay, were measured. YIGSR-Gd-DTPA-RhB and RGD-Gd-DTPA-RhB had high relaxivity, good tumor-targeting property, low cell cytotoxicity and good red FI in B16F10 melanoma cells. Moreover, YIGSR-Gd-DTPA-RhB and RGD-Gd-DTPA-RhB possessed high uptake to B16F10 melanoma, and then achieve highly enhanced FI and MRI of tumors in mice for a prolonged time. Therefore, YIGSR-Gd-DTPA-RhB and RGD-Gd-DTPA-RhB can be applied as the potential agents for tumor targeted MRI/FI in vivo.

Background Good’s syndrome (GS) is an immunodeficiency disease, causing thymoma, low or absent B-cells, hypogammaglobulinemia, and defects in cell-mediated immunity. The most common clinical presentation is recurrent infection, followed by refractory diarrhea, due to the immunodeficiency. However, there are only few reports on intestinal endoscopy and pathology. Case summary We report here two typical GS cases with diarrhea as the prominent manifestation. Both cases presented with thymoma combined with immunodeficiency, characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, low or absent B lymphocytes, and decreased T-cells with inverted CD4+/CD8+ T-cell ratio, while two GS patients were evaluated by endoscopy revealed mucosal edema and fine-granular or nodular appearance changes in the small intestine. Histological examination showed chronic inflammation and villous atrophy. A very interesting finding is that the inflammatory cell infiltration in the two GS cases was different. In one case, predominantly CD138+ plasma cells with only scattered CD3+ T-cells infiltration were revealed, while in another, it showed predominantly T-cells infiltration without plasma cells in the lamina propria. Although GS cases shared various clinical characteristics with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) cases, they still differed from CVID cases in terms of its late onset, lack of familial clusters, low or absent peripheral blood B lymphocytes, absence of lymphoid hyperplasia, and plasma cells infiltration in the lamina propria in some patients. Although both patients had been diagnosed previously with recurrent diarrhea, respiratory infection, and thymoma, the association between these conditions and the possibility of GS was not recognized. The patients had remained misdiagnosed for 2 and 4 years, respectively, even after receiving the diagnosis of thymoma. The rarity of GS was likely the primary cause for the lack of disease recognition. Reporting of these cases will help to alert clinicians and raise awareness of this disease. Conclusion GS should be considered among the differential diagnoses for patients with unexplained recurrent diarrhea and opportunistic infection. Although it was regarded as a subset of CVID with thymoma, GS had a different clinical-pathological feature from CVID.

Using corpus analysis and error analysis, this study investigates English-speaking, Japanese-speaking, and Korean-speaking Chinese learners’ acquisition of various meanings of hai in Mandarin Chinese, including its temporal meaning ‘still, yet’ as well as its abundant atemporal meanings involving addition, comparison and counter-expectation. We found a preponderance of misselection errors across the three groups of learners. The next most common error type for the Japanese-speaking and Korean-speaking learners was omission, while omission and over-inclusion were equally challenging for the English-speaking learners. Further analysis of errors in misselection shows that many learners failed to distinguish the temporal hai from the atemporal haishi required in a concessive sentence for the counter-expectation meaning.

A new bis- N-heterocyclic carbene palladium complex, (C13H9N2F2)2PdCl2, is synthesized by a three-step reaction and characterized by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as by X-ray crystallography. This new bis- N-heterocyclic carbene palladium complex has excellent stability and is capable of efficiently catalyzing the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction of aryl halides with acrylates.

BACKGROUND Fistulas are common complications of Crohn’s disease (CD). Gastrocolic fistulas (GFs) are rare, occult and potentially life-threatening complications. Few cases of GFs have been reported. Oral agent contrast-enhanced ultrasound (OA-CEUS) is a novel technique of ultrasound (US) for gut. Contrast agent made by Chinese yam is taken orally to dilate the lumen of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Thus, the impediment of gas inside gastrointestinal tract is removed and a good acoustic window is provided for gastroin-testinal tract scanning. This paper describes a case of GF secondary to CD detected by OA-CEUS when it was missed by endoscopy and computed tomography (CT). To our knowledge, this is the first report of GF secondary to CD detected by OA-CEUS up to date. CASE SUMMARY A 29-year-old woman with a 6-year history of CD was admitted to our hospital for abdominal pain and diarrhea for 5 months without obvious predisposing causes. Initial gastroscopy failed to show any evidence of lesions. Colonoscopy revealed multiple erosions, mucosal nodularity, linear ulcers and a cobblestone appearance. A CT scan of her abdomen showed a complex multilocular structure adherent to the greater curvature of the stomach in her left lower abdomen, with fluid, gas and significant surrounding inflammation. CT also demonstrated an abdominal abscess, which was later treated with US-guided drainage. Colonoscopy, gastroscopy and CT missed the presence of a GF. OA-CEUS was performed. A contrast agent made from Chinese yam was taken orally to dilate the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. A good acoustic window was provided for gastrointestinal tract scanning and the impediment of gas inside the gastrointestinal tract was removed. With the aid of the “window”, a canal with hypoechoic wall was identified connecting the greater curvature of stomach to the splenic colon flexure in free sections. We also observed the hyperechoic gas flowing dynamically inside the canal. Thus, a GF was suspected. US is the first imaging modality taking GF into account. At the same time, OA-CEUS identified the site of the fistula and its two orifices. Gastroscopy was performed again, revealing a small ulcer approximately 5 mm in diameter, which was considered as an orifice. On the basis of OA-CEUS and other examinations, the patient was diagnosed with a GF secondary to CD. Then, laparoscopic exploration, partial stomach resection, transverse colostomy and abdominal abscess drainage were performed. The patient recovered uneventfully. CONCLUSION GFs are rare, occult and potentially life-threatening complications in CD. US is one of the first-line modalities to evaluate CD and its complications. OA-CEUS, a novel technique of US for gut, may be helpful in reducing the possibility of a missed diagnosis of GF.

Background: The role of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of EBV in the blood and intestinal mucosa of patients with IBD and evaluate the association between EBV positivity and IBD. Methods: Patients with IBD, hospitalized between January 2015 and April 2018, were enrolled. The EBV-DNA load in blood samples from each subject was analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. EBV-encoded small-RNA 1 (EBER-1) was detected by in-situ hybridization in intestinal mucosa tissue sections of patients with IBD. Result: EBV-DNA was detected in 48 out of 568 patients with IBD (8.4%), and EBER-1 positivity was detected in 27 of these patients (56.3%). Refractory IBD and severe mucosal inflammation were more common in patients with detectable levels of EBER-1 than in those without; the number of EBER-1-positive cells positively correlated with mucosal inflammation (P value < 0.05). Age (≥60 years old) and use of azathioprine were risk factors for EBV infection. There was no significant difference in clinical remission rate and surgical rate between the EBER-1 positive group and EBER-1 negative group, antiviral group and the non-antiviral group, among IBD patients who tested positive for EBV-DNA. Conclusion: Elderly patients with IBD, treated with azathioprine, are more susceptible to EBV positivity. Further, EBV mucosal detection correlated with the severity of mucosal damage and refractoriness, but not prognosis.

This study examines the uses of Mandarin Chinese buguo ‘but’ as a contrastive discourse marker (CM) in spoken discourse. The data were taken from casual conversations, TV/radio single-interviewee interviews and TV panel news interviews. We found that two main types of the CM buguo were used to mark contrast: restrictive buguo and cancellative buguo. Restrictive buguo is similar to the adv buguo in usage in that it modifies the validity of the preceding proposition to signal implicit contrast. Cancellative buguo is used to cancel the validity of a previous proposition to indicate explicit contrast. As such, restrictive buguo can serve as a topic-shift marker and to convey implicit disagreement; cancellative buguo often acts as a topic-change marker used to introduce explicit disagreement. In particular, both restrictive buguo and cancellative buguo can serve as metacoherence markers, which are often employed by interview hosts/hostesses to make the discourse optimally coherent.

The Sinian Doushantuo Formation is the oldest shale gas reservoir discovered in the world, which contains good shale gas shows as the Eyangye-1 and Zidi-1 wells in the Yichang Region of western Hubei province, China. The shales in the Doushantuo Formation feature considerable thickness (135 m), high gas content (4.83 m3/t) and high fragile mineral content (up to 75%). Due to the influences of the sedimentary environment, the shale reservoirs here have high dolomitic content (54%) and abruptly changes in vertical lithofacies. Moreover, the characteristics of the shale sweet-spot differ significantly from that in the Wufeng Formation and Longmaxi Formation in southeast Sichuan Basin. A high-resolution sequence stratigraphic correlation was performed on the shales of the Doushantuo Formation at the Eyangye-1 well, Zidi-1 well, Zidi-2 well and some outcrop profiles in Yichang area for the identification of their sedimentary microfacies characteristics. A comprehensive comparative analysis was made by incorporating the elemental geochemistry, wireline and mud logging data of the well to further identify the sweet-spot interval therein. With the analysis of Eyangye-1 well, the sweet-spot interval of the Doushantuo Formation is 3360−3408 m, of which sedimentary microfacies is deepwater reduced environment with many pyrite laminaes, and the TOC is high to 3.42%, the Ro is 3.3%, the organic and matrix pore are well developed and the aperture more than 50 nm, the porosity is 2.7%, the desorption gas content average is 2.16%, and the main mineral is dolomitic (54%) and siliceous quartz (21%). Additionally, these parameters combined with previous studies will shed light on evaluating and characterizing the layers therein, also provide referential geological data for the following exploration and development activities of this shale system.

Construction vibration during deep excavation supported by diaphragm walls was experimentally investigated. First, measurement on the ground vibration induced by panel excavation for diaphragm wall installation was made inside a construction site. Results showed that the vibration level during excavation was much higher than ambient vibration at most frequencies, especially near the fundamental frequencies of the ground and the grab, and the strongest vibration was induced by the grab impacting the ground and guide walls. At another site, indoor ground-borne vibration was measured at two zebrafish laboratories at B1 and 3F of adjacent buildings during phases of existing pavement demolition, panel excavation, and basement excavation. The behavior of zebrafishes was observed simultaneously to examine the influence of vibration. Pavement demolition caused considerable increase in vibration level at B1 for nearly all frequencies, whereas at 3F the increment was more remarkable yet limited to a narrower bandwidth. Excavation of both panel and basement slightly enhanced the vibration magnitude at B1 at frequencies above 63 Hz or higher yet was hardly influential at 3F. Zebrafishes at B1 exhibited more startle response than those at 3F in all phases possibly because the construction vibration at B1 fell within the frequency range of vibration detection of zebrafishes. According to ISO 2631-1, this indoor vibration was perceptible to people only in some situations yet caused no discomfort.

Chinese herbal formulas including the lung-cleaning and toxicity-excluding (LCTE) soup have played an important role in treating the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (caused by SARS-CoV-2) in China. Applying LCTE outside of China may prove challenging due to the unfamiliar rationale behind its application in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. To overcome this barrier, a biochemical understanding of the clinical effects of LCTE is needed. Here, we explore the chemical compounds present in the reported LCTE ingredients and the proteins targeted by these compounds via a network pharmacology analysis. Our results indicate that LCTE contains compounds with the potential to directly inhibit SARS-CoV-2 and inflammation, and that the compound targets proteins highly related to COVID-19’s main symptoms. We predict the general effect of LCTE is to affect the pathways involved in viral and other microbial infections, inflammation/cytokine response, and lung diseases. Our work provides a biochemical basis for using LCTE to treat COVID-19 and its main symptoms., Deng-hai Zhang et al. report a network pharmacology analysis of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) lung-cleaning and toxicity-excluding (LCTE) soup. By exploring the chemical compounds that make up LCTE and the likely pathways and proteins that they target, the authors show that LCTE may have the potential to directly inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 virus and relieve inflammatory symptoms.

Our work provided chemical biological explanations for using LCTE to treat COVID-19.

Food coloring is often used as a coloring agent in foods, medicines and cosmetics, and it was reported to have certain carcinogenic and mutagenic effects in living organisms. Investigation of physiological parameters using zebrafish is a promising methodology to understand disease biology and drug toxicity for various drug discovery on humans. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a well-acknowledged model organism with combining assets such as body transparency, small size, low cost of cultivation, and high genetic homology with humans and is used as a specimen tool for the in-vivo throughput screening approach. In addition, recent advances in microfluidics show a promising alternative for zebrafish manipulation in terms of drug administration and extensive imaging capability. This pilot work highlighted the design and development of a microfluidic detection platform for zebrafish larvae through investigating the effects of food coloring on cardiovascular functionality and pectoral fin swing ability. The zebrafish embryos were exposed to the Cochineal Red and Brilliant Blue FCF pigment solution in a concentration of (0.02‰, 0.2‰) cultured in the laboratory from the embryo stage to hatching and development until 9 days post fertilization (d.p.f.). In addition, zebrafish swimming behaviors in terms of pectoral fin beating towards the toxicity screening were further studied by visualizing the induced flow field. It was evidenced that Cochineal Red pigment at a concentration of 0.2‰ not only significantly affected the zebrafish pectoral fin swing behavior, but also significantly increased the heart rate of juvenile fish. The higher concentration of Brilliant Blue FCF pigment (0.2%) increased heart rate during early embryonic stages of zebrafish. However, zebrafish exposed to food coloring did not show any significant changes in cardiac output. The applications of this proposed platform can be further extended towards observing the neurobiological/hydrodynamic behaviors of zebrafish larvae for practical applications in drug tests.

Uremic pruritus (UP) is prevalent among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which causes severe itching and affects their quality of life. Additionally, patients experience fatigue and depression, and an increased risk of mortality has also been reported. A meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has indicated that Chinese herbal bath therapy (CHBT) had adjuvant benefits in improving UP in ESRD patients, and previous studies have reported that herb combinations were more useful than treatment with a single herb. Association rule analysis has been used to evaluate potential correlations between herb combinations, and Apriori algorithms are one of the most powerful machine-learning algorithms available for identifying associations within databases. Therefore, we used the Apriori algorithm to analyze association rules of potential core herb combinations for use in CHBT for UP treatment using data from a meta-analysis of 17 RCTs that used CHBT for UP treatment. Data on 43 CHBT herbs were extracted from 17 RCTs included for analysis and we found 19 association rules. The results indicated that the following herb combinations {Chuanxiong, Baijili} ≥ {Dahuang} and {Dahuang, Baijili} ≥ {Chuanxiong} were most strongly associated, implying that these herb combinations represent potential CHBT treatments for UP.

Given the dynamic and uncertain production environment of job shops, a scheduling strategy with adaptive features must be developed to fit variational production factors. Therefore, a dynamic scheduling system model based on multi-agent technology, including machine, buffer, state, and job agents, was built. A weighted Q-learning algorithm based on clustering and dynamic search was used to determine the most suitable operation and to optimize production. To address the large state space problem caused by changes in the system state, four state features were extracted. The dimension of the system state was decreased through the clustering method. To reduce the error between the actual system states and clustering ones, the state difference degree was defined and integrated with the iteration formula of the Q function. To select the optimal state-action pair, improved search and iteration update strategies were proposed. Convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm and simulation experiments indicated that the proposed adaptive strategy is well adaptable and effective in different scheduling environments, and shows better performance in complex environments. The two contributions of this research are as follows: (1) a dynamic greedy search strategy was developed to avoid blind searching in traditional strategy. (2) Weighted iteration update of the Q function, including the weighted mean of the maximum fuzzy earning, was designed to improve the speed and accuracy of the improved learning algorithm.

Acute pancreatitis is rarely associated with drugs. Acetaminophen overdose is a well-known cause of hepatic toxicity, but drug-induced pancreatitis is rarely reported, especially after mild overdose. A 32-year-old woman presented with nausea and vomiting for 12 h, but no abdominal pain following an overdose of eight Tylenol tablets containing acetaminophen (325 mg acetaminophen per tablet). Laboratory results on admission showed abnormal amylase and lipase levels but completely normal liver function. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed mild swelling of the pancreas without fluid collection around the pancreas. The patient complained of severe abdominal pain five days after admission when attempting to drink water and liquids. Eight days after admission, fluid around the pancreas was observed by computed tomography. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with acetaminophen-induced acute pancreatitis after exclusion of common causes. Routine treatment for pancreatitis and N-acetylcysteine were administered to prevent disease progression. The patient was discharged in good condition.

Objective To report drug-induced oesophageal ulceration in adult patients treated with doxycycline for acne vulgaris. Methods This retrospective case series included data from adult patients treated with oral doxycycline therapy for acne vulgaris, who had presented with oesophageal ulceration at the Third People’s Hospital of Hangzhou between June 2016 and December 2017, and whose diagnosis was confirmed by gastroscopy. Clinicodemographic data were analysed, including symptom onset, endoscopy results, that were assessed for classic features of oesophageal ulceration. Patients were questioned regarding medication intake. Results A total of 12 patients were included (mean age, 23.50 ± 3.20 years), eight (66.67%) of whom were female. Based on history of medication and endoscopic findings, these patients were diagnosed with doxycycline-induced oesophageal ulceration. Most patients were found to have taken the medication at bedtime, just before lying down, and/or with insufficient water. Conclusion Doxycycline may cause oesophageal irritation when not taken with sufficient water, or taken just before lying down to sleep. Prescribing physicians should be aware of these issues, and instruct patients as to the correct method for intake of doxycycline.

Objective: To study the correlation of PRPS1 and JAB1 expression in the bone marrow tissue of acute leukemia with the apoptosis and invasion of tumor cells. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with acute leukemia by bone marrow aspiration biopsy in Edong medical group Huangshi central hospital between February 2015 and December 2017 were selected as the AL group of the research, and patients who received bone marrow aspiration biopsy and were without significant abnormality in Edong medical group Huangshi central hospital during the same period were selected as the control group of the research. RNA was extracted to determine the mRNA expression of PRPS1, JAB1, apoptosis genes and invasion genes, and protein was extracted to determine the protein expression of PRPS1 and JAB1. Results: Both mRNA expression and protein expression of PRPS1 and JAB1 in bone marrow tissues of AL group were significantly higher than those of control group; AuroraA, Bcl-2, β-catenin, MMP2, MMP9, N-cadherin and Msi2 mRNA expression in bone marrow tissues of AL group were significantly higher than those of control group whereas Bax, C/EBPα, RUNX3 and TIMP3 mRNA expression were significantly lower than those of control group, and the PRPS1 and JAB1 mRNA expression in bone marrow tissues of AL group were positively correlated with AuroraA, Bcl-2, β-catenin, MMP2, MMP9, N-cadherin and Msi2 mRNA expression, and negatively correlated with Bax, C/EBPα, RUNX3 and TIMP3 mRNA expression. Conclusion: The high expression of PRPS1 and JAB1 in the bone marrow tissue of acute leukemia can inhibit cell apoptosis and promote cell invasion.

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), which cause severe global agricultural losses, can establish a special niche in the root vascular cylinder of crops, making them difficult to control. Endophytic bacteria have great potential as biocontrol organisms against Meloidogyne incognita. Three endophytic bacteria were isolated from plant tissues and showed high nematicidal activity against M. incognita second-stage juveniles (J2) in vitro. The gyrB gene sequence amplification results indicated that the three isolates were Bacillus cereus BCM2, B. cereus SZ5, and B. altitudinis CCM7. The isolates colonized tomato roots rapidly and stably during the colonization dynamic experiment. Three pot experiments were designed to determine the potential of three endophytic bacterial isolates on control of root-knot nematodes. The results showed that the preinoculated B. cereus BCM2 experiment significantly reduced gall and egg mass indexes. The inhibition ratio of gall and egg mass was up to 81.2 and 75.6% on tomato roots and significantly enhanced shoot length and fresh weight. The other two experiments with inoculated endophytic bacteria and M. incognita at the same time or after morbidity had lower inhibition ratios compared with the preinoculated endophytic bacteria experiment. The confocal laser-scanning microscopy method was used to further study the possible mechanism of endophytic bacteria in the biocontrol process. The results showed the localization pattern of the endophytic bacteria B. cereus BCM2-(str′)-pBCgfp-1 in tomato root tissues. Root tissue colonized by endophytic bacteria repelled M. incognita J2 infection compared with the untreated control in a repellence experiment. We isolated an endophytic B. cereus strain that stably colonized tomato and controlled M. incognita effectively. This strain has potential for plant growth promotion, successful ecological niche occupation, and M. incognita J2 repellent action induction. It plays an important role in endophytic bacteria against root-knot nematodes.

Furosine (N&epsilon, (2-furoylmethyl)-l-lysine) is formed during the early stages of the Maillard reaction from a lysine Amadori compound and is frequently used as a marker of reaction progress. Furosine is toxic, with significant effects on animal livers, kidneys, and other organs. However, reports on the formation of furosine in processed velvet antler are scarce. In this study, we have quantified the furosine content in processed velvet antler by using UPLC-MS/MS. The furosine contents of velvet antler after freeze-drying, boiling, and processing without and with blood were 148.51&ndash, 193.93, 168.10&ndash, 241.22, 60.29&ndash, 80.33, and 115.18&ndash, 138.99 mg/kg protein, respectively. The factors affecting furosine formation in processed velvet antler, including reducing sugars, proteins, amino acids, and process temperature, are discussed herein. Proteins, amino acids, and reducing sugars are substrates for the Maillard reaction and most significantly influence the furosine content in the processed velvet antler. High temperatures induce the production of furosine in boiled velvet antler but not in the freeze-dried samples, whereas more furosine is produced in velvet antler processed with blood, which is rich in proteins, amino acids, and reducing sugars, than in the samples processed without blood. Finally, wax slices rich in proteins, amino acids, and reducing sugars produced more furosine than the other parts of the velvet antler. These data provide a reference for guiding the production of low-furosine velvet antler and can be used to estimate the consumer intake of furosine from processed velvet antler.

A new Zinc(II) coordination polymer, {[Zn(ip)(H2L)]·4H2O}n [H2ip = isophthalic acid; H2L = 3-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole], is reported here. It has been structurally characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis, IR spectra, fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetry analysis and X-ray powder diffraction patterns. It belongs to the triclinic system, space group P-1 with a = 8.7934(3) Å, b = 10.1639(3) Å, c = 12.3203(5) Å, α = 75.174(3)°, β = 81.739(3)°, γ = 79.578(4)°, V = 1041.40(7) Å3, Z = 2, Dc = 1.638 g/cm3, Mr = 513.77, F(000) = 528, R = 0.0344 and wR = 0.0798. The single X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the compound exhibits 2D layer structure. Moreover, thermal behavior and luminescence properties of the compound were also studied.

Dissolved iron exerts significant effects on mineral leaching, impurity removal, and solution purification in the zinc hydrometallurgy process. To date, iron oxidation and migration behaviors are yet to be fully understood and further research on effective regulation mechanisms of iron is required. In this paper, zinc sulfide concentrate was used as the research object. The behaviors of both Zn and Fe during pressure leaching were investigated for varying temperature, acid addition, and leaching time. At temperature of 100~160 &deg, C, H2SO4/Zn ratio of 0.9:1&ndash, 1.25:1, and leaching time of 0.5&ndash, 2.5 h, the zinc extraction increased with temperature, acidity and leaching time. The iron extraction, however, varied differently with increasing temperature, acidity and leaching time: (A) it increased with temperature to 150 &deg, C and then decreased at higher temperature, and (B) displayed an initial increase followed by a decrease with respect to the leaching time. Based on the characteristics of the residue phase, chemical phase analysis was used to analyze the residue in detail. The extent of dissolution of iron-containing minerals and the extent of precipitation of ferric ions during the leaching process were quantitatively calculated.
