Capabilities for continuous monitoring of pressures and temperatures at critical skin interfaces can help to guide care strategies that minimize the potential for pressure injuries in hospitalized patients or in individuals confined to the bed. Description, Thermoforming is a versatile technique to fabricate stretchable and customizable 3DEs for a variety of wearable applications., Recently, three-dimensional electronics (3DE) is attracting huge interest owing to the increasing demands for seamless integration of electronic systems on 3D curvilinear surfaces. However, it is still challenging to fabricate 3DE with high customizability, conformability, and stretchability. Here, we present a fabrication method of 3DE based on predistorted pattern generation and thermoforming. Through this method, custom-designed 3DE is fabricated through the thermoforming process. The fabricated 3DE has high 3D conformability because the thermoforming process enables the complete replication of both the overall shape and the surface texture of the 3D mold. Furthermore, the usage of thermoplastic elastomer and a liquid metal–based conductive electrode allows for high thermoformability during the device fabrication as well as high stretchability during the device operation. We believe that this technology can enable a wide range of new functionalities and multiscale 3D morphologies in wearable electronics.

Outbreaks of airborne pathogens pose a major threat to public health. Here we present a single-step nanocoating process to endow commercial face mask filters with photobiocidal activity, triboelectric filtration capability, and washability. These functions were successfully achieved with a composite nanolayer of silica-alumina (Si-Al) sol-gel, crystal violet (CV) photosensitizer, and hydrophobic electronegative molecules of 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES). The transparent Si-Al matrix strongly immobilized the photosensitizer molecules while dispersing them spatially, thus suppressing self-quenching. During nanolayer formation, PFOTES was anisotropically rearranged on the Si-Al matrix, promoting moisture resistance and triboelectric charging of the Si-Al/PFOTES-CV (SAPC)-coated filter. The SAPC nanolayer stabilized the photoexcited state of the photosensitizer and promoted redox reaction. Compared to pure-photosensitizer-coated filters, the SAPC filter showed substantially higher photobiocidal efficiency (∼99.99 % for bacteria and a virus) and photodurability (∼83 % reduction in bactericidal efficiency for the pure-photosensitizer filter but ∼0.34 % for the SAPC filter after 72 h of light irradiation). Moreover, after five washes with detergent, the SAPC filter maintained its photobiocidal and filtration performance, proving its reusability potential. Therefore, this SAPC nanolayer coating provides a practical strategy for manufacturing an antimicrobial and reusable mask filter for use during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Bioresorbable electronic stimulators are of rapidly growing interest as unusual therapeutic platforms, i.e., bioelectronic medicines, for treating disease states, accelerating wound healing processes and eliminating infections. Here, we present advanced materials that support operation in these systems over clinically relevant timeframes, ultimately bioresorbing harmlessly to benign products without residues, to eliminate the need for surgical extraction. Our findings overcome key challenges of bioresorbable electronic devices by realizing lifetimes that match clinical needs. The devices exploit a bioresorbable dynamic covalent polymer that facilitates tight bonding to itself and other surfaces, as a soft, elastic substrate and encapsulation coating for wireless electronic components. We describe the underlying features and chemical design considerations for this polymer, and the biocompatibility of its constituent materials. In devices with optimized, wireless designs, these polymers enable stable, long-lived operation as distal stimulators in a rat model of peripheral nerve injuries, thereby demonstrating the potential of programmable long-term electrical stimulation for maintaining muscle receptivity and enhancing functional recovery.

Significance Skin-interfaced, wireless devices for clinical-grade monitoring of physiological parameters are of growing interest for uses that range from healthcare to sports performance. This paper introduces a multifunctional skin-mounted microfluidic platform for capture and biomarker analysis of microliter volumes of sweat, a biofluid that can be collected noninvasively, with potential relevance in biophysical sensing. The focus is on colorimetric and digital assessments of a collection of parameters related to stress, including concentrations of vitamin C, cortisol, and glucose, along with quantitative measurements of sweat rate and galvanic skin response. The results represent important additions to a portfolio of emerging capabilities in skin-interfaced technologies for physiological monitoring, with particular relevance to conditions that follow from unhealthy levels of physical and mental stress., Soft microfluidic systems that capture, store, and perform biomarker analysis of microliter volumes of sweat, in situ, as it emerges from the surface of the skin, represent an emerging class of wearable technology with powerful capabilities that complement those of traditional biophysical sensing devices. These wireless, battery-free, skin-interfaced devices combine lateral flow immunoassays for cortisol, fluorometric assays for glucose and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and digital tracking of skin galvanic responses. Systematic benchtop evaluations and field studies on human subjects highlight the key features of this platform for the continuous, noninvasive monitoring of biochemical and biophysical correlates of the stress state.

Bioresorbable drug release platforms offer advanced treatment for hormone imbalances, malignant cancers, and diabetic conditions., Implantable drug release platforms that offer wirelessly programmable control over pharmacokinetics have potential in advanced treatment protocols for hormone imbalances, malignant cancers, diabetic conditions, and others. We present a system with this type of functionality in which the constituent materials undergo complete bioresorption to eliminate device load from the patient after completing the final stage of the release process. Here, bioresorbable polyanhydride reservoirs store drugs in defined reservoirs without leakage until wirelessly triggered valve structures open to allow release. These valves operate through an electrochemical mechanism of geometrically accelerated corrosion induced by passage of electrical current from a wireless, bioresorbable power-harvesting unit. Evaluations in cell cultures demonstrate the efficacy of this technology for the treatment of cancerous tissues by release of the drug doxorubicin. Complete in vivo studies of platforms with multiple, independently controlled release events in live-animal models illustrate capabilities for control of blood glucose levels by timed delivery of insulin.

Solution-processed metal grid transparent conductors with low sheet resistance, high optical transmittance and good mechanical flexibility have great potential for use in flexible optoelectronic devices. However, there are still remaining challenges to improve optoelectrical properties and electromechanical stability of the metallic structures due to random loose packings of nanoparticles and the existence of many pores. Here we introduce a selective multi-nanosoldering method to generate robust metallic layers on the thin metal grid structures (< a thickness of 200 nm), which are generated via self-pining assisted direct inking of silver ions. The selective multi-nanosoldering leads to lowering the sheet resistance of the metal grid transparent conductors, while keeping the optical transmittance constant. Also, it reinforces the electromechanical stability of flexible metal grid transparent conductors against a small bending radius or a repeated loading. Finally, organic light-emitting diodes based on the flexible metal grid transparent conductors are demonstrated. Our approach can open a new route to enhance the functionality of metallic structures fabricated using a variety of solution-processed metal patterning methods for next-generation optoelectronic and micro/nanoelectronic applications.

Through the direct decomposition of an Al precursor ink AlH3{O(C4H9)2}, we fabricated an Al-coated conductive fiber filter for the efficient electrostatic removal of airborne particles (>99%) with a low pressure drop (~several Pascals). The effects of the electrical and structural properties of the filters were investigated in terms of collection efficiency, pressure drop, and particle deposition behavior. The collection efficiency did not show a significant correlation with the extent of electrical conductivity, as the filter is electrostatically charged by the metallic Al layers forming electrical networks throughout the fibers. Most of the charged particles were collected via surface filtration by Coulombic interactions; consequently, the filter thickness had little effect on the collection efficiency. Based on simulations of various fiber structures, we found that surface filtration can transition to depth filtration depending on the extent of interfiber distance. Therefore, the effects of structural characteristics on collection efficiency varied depending on the degree of the fiber packing density. This study will offer valuable information pertaining to the development of a conductive metal/polymer composite air filter for an energy-efficient and high-performance electrostatic filtration system.

We developed a method for direct imprinting of thermally reduced Ag nanoparticles via deformation-driven ink injection to yield high-performance metal grid transparent conductors (TCs). A grid patterned mold was created to have a macroscale cavity by designing a “reservoir” that captured outgoing ink and injected the captured ink into the grid patterned mold cavity by a roof deformation. The ink supply from the reservoir contributed to not only improving the ink filling, but also decreasing the linewidth of the grid patterned mold cavity due to a sidewall deformation on the liquid film. The metal grid TCs fabricated using the reservoir-assisted mold performed better than the metal grids prepared using the typical mold in terms of the sheet resistance (4.7 vs. 12.6 Ω sq−1) and transmittance at 550 nm (93.5 vs. 90.7%), respectively. The metal grid TCs were embedded into large-scale, flexible, and transparent films, which showed a reasonable electromechanical stability under repeated bending. The metal grid embedded TCs were fabricated for application in touch screen panels. Our approach provides a new route for fabrication of high-performance, solution-processed micro/nanoscale metal grid TCs and hybrid TCs based on Ag nanowires, graphene, or carbon nanotubes for use in a variety of next-generation flexible optoelectronic devices.

Next-generation transparent conductors (TCs) require excellent electromechanical durability under mechanical deformations as well as high electrical conductivity and transparency. Here we introduce a method for the fabrication of highly conductive, low-porosity, flexible metal grid TCs via temperature-controlled direct imprinting (TCDI) of Ag ionic ink. The TCDI technique based on two-step heating is capable of not only stably capturing the Ag ionic ink, but also reducing the porosity of thermally decomposed Ag nanoparticle structures by eliminating large amounts of organic complexes. The porosity reduction of metal grid TCs on a glass substrate leads to a significant decrease of the sheet resistance from 21.5 to 5.5 Ω sq−1 with an optical transmittance of 91% at λ = 550 nm. The low-porosity metal grid TCs are effectively embedded to uniform, thin and transparent polymer films with negligible resistance changes from the glass substrate having strong interfacial fracture energy (~8.2 J m−2). Finally, as the porosity decreases, the flexible metal grid TCs show a significantly enhanced electromechanical durability under bending stresses. Organic light‐emitting diodes based on the flexible metal grid TCs as anode electrodes are demonstrated.

This paper presents a deterministic bead-in-droplet ejection (BIDE) technique that regulates the precise distribution of microbeads in an ejected droplet. The deterministic BIDE was realized through the effective integration of a microfluidic single-particle handling technique with a liquid dispensing system. The integrated bead dispenser facilitates the transfer of the desired number of beads into a dispensing volume and the on-demand ejection of bead-encapsulated droplets. Single bead–encapsulated droplets were ejected every 3 s without any failure. Multiple-bead dispensing with deterministic control of the number of beads was demonstrated to emphasize the originality and quality of the proposed dispensing technique. The dispenser was mounted using a plug-socket type connection, and the dispensing process was completely automated using a programmed sequence without any microscopic observation. To demonstrate a potential application of the technique, bead-based streptavidin–biotin binding assay in an evaporating droplet was conducted using ultralow numbers of beads. The results evidenced the number of beads in the droplet crucially influences the reliability of the assay. Therefore, the proposed deterministic bead-in-droplet technology can be utilized to deliver desired beads onto a reaction site, particularly to reliably and efficiently enrich and detect target biomolecules.

Akt/PKB plays pivotal roles in many physiological responses such as proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. Here we show that tyrosine phosphorylation of Akt/PKB is essential for the subsequent phosphorylation at Thr 308 . Tyrosine phosphorylation of Akt/PKB was induced by stimulation of COS-7 cells with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF) and its phosphorylation was significantly enhanced by constitutive targeting of Akt/PKB to the plasma membrane by myristoylation. Interestingly, incubation of affinity purified Myc-tagged Akt/PKB with purified EGF receptor resulted in tyrosine phosphorylation as well as Ser 473 phosphorylation of Akt/PKB. In addition, tyrosine-phosphorylated Akt/PKB could directly associate with activated EGF receptor in vitro. Finally, alanine mutation at putative tyrosine phosphorylation site (Tyr 326 ) abolished EGF induced Thr 308 phosphorylation of wild type as well as constitutively active form of Akt/PKB. Given these results we suggest here that direct tyrosine phosphorylation of Akt/PKB by EGF receptor could be another mechanism of EGF-induced control of many physiological responses.

Rationale and Objectives. We evaluated the differences between combined hydrostatic and hypervolemic edema and oleic acid-induced edema on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans. Methods. Twelve anesthetized and ventilated pigs were studied. Hydrostatic edema was induced by ligation of the abdominal aorta and infusion of normal saline ( n = 4); permeability edema was induced by intravenous injection of oleic acid ( n = 4). Four pigs were studied as normal controls. Serial scans were obtained before and after induction of edema at a constant position in the caudal lobe of the lung. The distribution of edema was assessed visually. Cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the pulmonary artery and vein were measured both at the lobar and segmental levels. Results. Gravity-dependent opacity, peribronchovascular fluid collection, prominent centrilobular core, thickening of the interlobular septa, and air-space consolidation at the dependent site were the sequential HRCT findings of hydrostatic edema. Randomly distributed, diffuse patchy high attenuation areas with a tendency for predilection in the subpleural and peripheral areas of the secondary lobule were the findings of oleic acidinduced edema. Hydrostatic edema increased the mean CSAs of the lobular vein by 137.8% ± 78.7, but oleic acid edema decreased the mean CSAs by 33.2% ± 22.7. Changes in the mean CSAs of the pulmonary arteries were not significant. The mean vein-to-artery ratio increased significantly in hydrostatic edema but decreased in oleic acid edema. Conclusion. HRCT findings for hydrostatic and oleic acid-induced pulmonary edema differed both in distribution of edema and in pulmonary vascular response.

Background Hypertension is an important risk factor for sudden cardiac death, of which the incidence increases with increases in blood pressure. Prolonged QT dispersion has been identified to indicate increased risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. In this study, QT dispersion was investigated in hypertensive patients during the strain phase of the Valsalva maneuver. Methods The study population included 75 subjects: 25 with normal blood pressure (Control), 25 with stage I hypertension (Group A), and 25 with stage II hypertension (Group B).
