This paper presents a novel miniaturization approach by co-designing together a filter and an antenna. Indeed, contrary to a classical filter-antenna design, which presents a $50~\Omega $ transition between the filter and the antenna, the co-design methodology proposed in this paper will prove that both the antenna and the filter can be optimized on a complex impedance. For this impedance, different from $50~\Omega $ , the antenna volume can be reduced by more than 50% while presenting a high radiation efficiency. Moreover, the filter performance will be optimized on complex impedance loads without being affected compared to a classical $50~\Omega $ filter. This new approach will be detailed and compared to a classical one in order to validate the improvement achieved by this co-design methodology. Prototypes have been manufactured and measurements confirm the benefits observed during the design phase.

In the context of climate change, height and frequency variations in extreme sea levels (ESLs) are studied using deterministic and probabilistic approaches. However, this type of approach does not highlight the dynamic effects (waves, currents) generated by metocean events (storms, cyclones, long swells, and tsunamis) beyond their effects on sea levels. In particular, ESL estimates are calculated by considering the main determining physical factors but cannot include all the effects of these factors. Ultimately, this can lead to confusion between ESL and hazard. This article proposes a systemic assessment method to analyze coastal hazard changes at regional scales, integrating parameters influencing sea levels, as well as factors describing the geomorphological context (length and shape of the coast, width of the continental shelf), metocean events, and the marine environment (e.g., coral reef state and sea ice extent). French mainland and overseas territories were selected to apply the method. The present study highlights the need to consider not only the sea level variability, but also the current and future characteristics of metocean events. The long, concave coasts bordered by a wide continental shelf appear particularly sensitive to variations in the intensity or trajectory of metocean events. Coral reef degradation in the tropics and the decrease in seasonal sea ice extent in the polar regions can also significantly change the nearshore hydrodynamics and impacts on the shoreline. These results help us to predict the types of hazard (shoreline erosion, rapid submersion, and/or permanent flooding) that will increase the most in different coastal zones.

Summary: Background: COVID-19 in paediatric ages could result in hospitalizations and death. In addition, excluding children from vaccination could turn them into reservoirs of the SARS-COV-2. Safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines are urgently needed for large-scale paediatric vaccination. ISMAELILLO study aimed to evaluate safety and immunogenicity of two strengths of a new recombinant receptor-binding domain (RBD) protein vaccine (Abdala) in paediatric population. Methods: A double-blinded, multicentre, randomised, phase 1/2 clinical trial was conducted in nine polyclinics in the province of Camagüey, Cuba. Healthy children and adolescents were stratified according to age (3–11 years old, or 12–18 years old) and they were randomly assigned (1:1; block size four) in two dosage level groups of vaccine to receive three intramuscular doses of 25 μg or 50 μg of RBD, 14 days apart. Main safety endpoint was analyzed as the percentage of serious adverse reactions during vaccination up to 28 days after the third dose (Day 56) in participants who received at least one dose vaccination. The primary immunogenicity endpoint assessed was seroconversion rate of anti-RBD IgG antibody at day 56. The immunogenicity outcomes were assessed in the per-protocol population. This trial is registered with Cuban Public Registry of Clinical Trials, RPCEC00000381. Findings: Between July 15, 2021, and August 16, 2021, 644 paediatric subjects were screened, of whom 592 were enrolled after verifying that they met the selection criteria: firstly 88 were included in Phase 1 of the study and 504 who completed Phase 2. The vaccine was well tolerated. Injection site pain was the most frequently reported local event (143 [8·4%] of 1707 total doses applied), taking place in 66/851 (7·8%) in the 25 μg group and in 77/856 (9·0%) in the 50 μg. The most common systemic adverse event (AE) was headache: 23/851 (2·7%) in the 25 μg group and 19/856 (2·2%) in the 50 μg. Reactogenicity was mild or moderate in severity, represented in 75% of cases by local symptoms, completely resolved in the first 24–48 h. Twenty-eight days after the third dose, seroconversion anti-RBD IgG were observed in 98·2% of the children and adolescents (231/234) for the 50 μg group and 98·7% (224/228) for the 25 μg group without differences between both strength. The specific IgG antibody geometric mean titres (GMT) showed higher titres between participants who received Abdala 50 μg (231·3; 95% CI 222·6–240·4) compared to those who received 25 μg (126·7; 95% CI 121·9–131·7). We analyze Spitzer spectra of 140 active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected in the hard X-rays (14–195 keV) by the Burst Alert Telescope on board Swift. This sample allows us to probe several orders of magnitude in black hole masses (10 ^6 –10 ^9 M _⊙ ), Eddington ratios (10 ^−3 –1), X-ray luminosities (10 ^42 –10 ^45 erg s ^−1 ), and X-ray column densities (10 ^20 –10 ^24 cm ^−2 ). The AGN emission is expected to be the dominant source of ionizing photons with energies ≳50 eV, and therefore, high-ionization mid-infrared (MIR) emission lines such as [Ne v ] 14.32, 24.32 μ m and [O iv ] 25.89 μ m are predicted to be good proxies of AGN activity, and robust against obscuration effects. We find high detection rates (≳85%–90%) for the MIR coronal emission lines in our AGN sample. The luminosities of these lines are correlated with the 14–150 keV luminosity (with a typical scatter of σ ∼0.4–0.5 dex), strongly indicating that the MIR coronal line (CL) emission is driven by AGN activity. CLs are also tightly correlated to the bolometric luminosity ( σ ∼0.2–0.3 dex), calculated from careful analysis of the spectral energy distribution. We find that the relationship between the CL strengths and L _14–150 keV is independent of black hole mass, AGN luminosity, and Eddington ratio, and mostly not affected by high X-ray column densities. This confirms that the MIR CLs can be used as unbiased tracers of the AGN power for X-ray luminosities in the 10 ^42 –10 ^45 erg s ^−1 range.

Eight years of upper-tropospheric (UT) ice crystal measurements with the backscatter cloud probe (BCP), installed on commercial aircraft operated as part of the In-Service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS), have been analyzed to assess the frequency and characteristics of extreme ice crystal events (EIEs), defined in this study as encounters with clouds that have number concentrations exceeding 5000 L−1. A total of 3196 events, in clouds of horizontal extent ≥ 2.5 km, were identified during the period from December 2011 to March 2020 in the latitude band between 30∘ S and 30∘ N. Regions of anthropogenic sources of carbon monoxide, with particles that can alter cloud microphysics, were attributed to these EIEs in UT clouds using the SOFT-IO model. The evaluation of low- and upper-level kinematic variables from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA5) reanalysis, combined with spatial distributions of aerosol optical depth and regions of biomass burning, highlights the physical mechanisms by which the particles are lofted to flight levels in regions of deep convection. The maps of lightning frequency, derived from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), provide additional evidence of the role of deep convection in transporting aerosol particles, cloud hydrometeors and carbon monoxide to aircraft cruising altitudes. The evaluation of aerosol particle mass concentrations and composition from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) contributes additional evidence for a link between regions of EIEs and surface emissions of dust, black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC) and sulfate particles. Given the composition of the source aerosols and the role of deep convection in their transport to the UT, the sampled ice clouds likely originate from the homogeneous or heterogeneous freezing of droplets formed on these particles, as has been reported in previous studies. The results from this study, which have been obtained from a large sample of measurements, have ramifications related to satellite measurement validation, weather forecasting and climate change. In addition, over 2000 of the randomly sampled clouds had derived ice water contents larger than 1 g m−3, a concentration that is considered potentially hazardous to commercial aircraft operations.

Peptide mapping is an important tool used to confirm that the correct sequence has been expressed for a protein and to evaluate protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) that may arise during the production, processing, or storage of protein drugs. Our new orally administered drug (Ab-1), a single-domain antibody, is highly stable and resistant to proteolysis. Analysis via the commonly used tryptic mapping method did not generate sufficient sequence coverage. Alternative methods were needed to study the Ab-1 drug substance (75 mg/mL) and drug product (3 mg/mL). To meet these analytical needs, we developed two new peptide mapping methods using lysyl endopeptidase (Lys-C) digestion. These newly developed protein digestion protocols do not require desalting/buffer-exchange steps, thereby reducing sample preparation time and improving method robustness. Additionally, the protein digestion is performed under neutral pH with methionine acting as a scavenger to minimize artifacts, such as deamidation and oxidation, which are induced during sample preparation. Further, the method for low-concentration samples performs comparably to the method for high-concentration samples. Both methods provide 100% sequence coverage for Ab-1, and, therefore, enable comprehensive characterization for its product quality attribute (PQA) assessment. Both methods can be used to study other antibody formats.

Abstract Motor synergies are neural organizations of a set of redundant motor effectors that interact with one another to compensate for each other’s error and ensure the stabilization of a performance variable. Recent studies have demonstrated that central nervous system synergistically coordinates its numerous motor effectors through Bayesian multi-sensory integration. Deficiency in sensory synergy weakens the synergistic interaction between the motor effectors. Here, we scrutinize the neuromechanical mechanism underlying this phenomenon through spectral analysis and modeling. We validate our model-generated results using experimental data reported in the literature collected from participants performing a finger force production task with and without tactile feedback (manipulated through injection of anesthetic in fingers). Spectral analysis reveals that the error compensation feature of synergies occurs only at low frequencies. Modeling suggests that the neurophysiological structures involving short-latency back-coupling loops similar to the well-known Renshaw cells explain the deterioration of synergy due to sensory deprivation.

The first record of the little sleeper shark, Somniosus rostratus (Risso, 1827), from the Tunisian coast, is presented in this note. It was an adult female measuring 990 mm total length and weighing 4500 g. The capture occurred off Ras Jebel located in north-eastern Tunisia at a depth of 120 m. The specimen is herein described including morphological measurements, color, and dental formula. Due to a lack of records, the real status of the species in the Mediterranean Sea remains questionable. Somniosus rostratus is rarely caught in this sea because it lives in deep bottoms poorly exploited by commercial vessels. However, recent captures of specimens and occurrence of nursery grounds suggest that a viable population of S. rostratus is probably established in this sea.

A specimen of Physiculus dalwigki Kaup, 1758 measuring 218 mm in total length, 190 mm in standard length, and weighing 90 g was caught off the northern Tunisian coast. This capture constitutes the first record of this fish from the Tunisian coast. The specimen is described including morphological measurements, meristic counts, and color. Due to a lack of records, the real status of the species in the Tunisian waters still remains questionable. Physiculus dalwigki occurs only off northern Spain and south to the Strait of Gibraltar in the waters surrounding Madera and the Azores Islands, and in the Mediterranean Sea from Nice (southern France) to the Tunisian coast. Therefore, it appears that P. dalwigki is displaying a disjoint distribution with the exclusion of a large western region of the Mediterranean Sea.

A suite of instruments was deployed to simultaneously measure nitrous acid (HONO), nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), volatile organic compounds (VOCs – including formaldehyde, HCHO) and meteorological parameters near a typical industrial zone in Nanjing in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China from 1 to 31 December 2015. High levels of HONO were detected using a wet-chemistry-based method. HONO ranged from 0.03 to 7.04 ppbv with an average of 1.32±0.92 ppbv. Elevated daytime HONO was frequently observed with a minimum of several hundred parts per trillion by volume (pptv) on average, which cannot be explained by the homogeneous OH + NO reaction (POH+NO) and primary emissions (Pemission), especially during periods with high particulate matter (PM2.5) loadings. HONO chemistry and its impact on the atmospheric oxidation capacity in the study area were further investigated using a Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) box model. The results show that the average hydroxyl radical (OH) production rate was dominated by the photolysis of HONO (7.13×106 molec. cm−3 s−1), followed by the ozonolysis of alkenes (3.94×106 molec. cm−3 s−1), the photolysis of O3 (2.46×106 molec. cm−3 s−1) and the photolysis of HCHO (1.60×106 molec. cm−3 s−1) during the campaign period, especially within plumes that originated from the industrial zone. Model simulations indicated that heterogeneous chemistry played an important role in HONO formation. The average nighttime NO2 to HONO conversion rate was determined to be ∼0.8 % h−1. A good correlation between nocturnal HONO∕NO2 and the product of particle surface area density (S∕V) and relative humidity (RH), S/V⋅RH, supports the heterogeneous NO2∕H2O reaction mechanism. The other HONO source, designated as Punknonwn, was about twice as high as POH+NO on average and displayed a diurnal profile with an evidently photo-enhanced feature, i.e., photosensitized reactions of NO2 may be an important daytime HONO source. Nevertheless, our results suggest that daytime HONO formation was mostly due to the light-induced conversion of NO2 on aerosol surfaces, whereas heterogeneous NO2 reactions on the ground surface dominated nocturnal HONO production. Our study indicated that an elevated PM2.5 level during haze events can promote the conversion of NO2 to HONO by providing more heterogeneous reaction sites, thereby increasing the atmospheric oxidation capacity, which may further promote the formation of secondary air pollutants. Highlights: High levels of HONO, with an average of 1.32±0.92 ppbv, were observed near one of the largest industrial zones in the YRD region of China. HONO photolysis and alkene ozonolyses contributed the most to OH production and, hence, the atmospheric oxidation capacity. High loading of PM2.5 provided additional reaction surfaces for HONO formation. Heterogeneous formation mechanisms were the most important daytime HONO sources and were further enhanced by sunlight.

Heterogeneity of therapeutic Monoclonal antibody (mAb) drugs are due to protein variants generated during the manufacturing process. These protein variants can be critical quality attributes (CQAs) depending on their potential impact on drug safety and/or efficacy. To identify CQAs and ensure the drug product qualities, a thorough characterization is required but challenging due to the complex structure of biotherapeutics. Past characterization studies for basic and acidic variants revealed that full characterizations were limited to the basic charge variants, while the quantitative measurements of acidic variants left gaps. Consequently, the characterization and quantitation of acidic variants are more challenging. A case study of a therapeutic mAb1 accounted for two-thirds of the enriched acidic variants in the initial characterization study. This led to additional investigations, closing the quantification gaps of mAb1 acidic variants. This work demonstrates that a well-designed study with the right choices of analytical methods can play a key role in characterization studies. Thus, the updated strategies for more complete antibody charge variant characterization are recommended.

Moringa oleifera is an oilseed crop with poten­tial for biodiesel production. The second step in this process is the extraction of oil. Extraction in hot water, with a Soxhlet apparatus and the ultrasound technique are the most commonly used methods. The aim of the present work was to obtain a phenomenological model for the Moringa oleifera oil extraction process using Soxhlet. Effective diffusivity for Moringa oil through the kernels is obtained, using the kinetics of the extraction process (experimentally determined) and the Fick’s diffusion second law for non-steady state. The value of 0.685·10-12 m2/s fully matched reports on effective diffusion coefficient for other solids. It was also verified from the statistical analysis and a linear fit for experimental data that the model can be used to describe the oil extraction process of Moringa oleifera in the Soxhlet extractor, responding to the diffusive phenomenon (process controlled by internal resistance).

In this work we report the study of the ozonolysis of 2,5-dihydrofuran and 2,3-dihydrofuran and the reaction conditions leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosols. The reactions have been carried out in a Teflon chamber filled with synthetic air mixtures at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The ozonolysis only produced particles in the presence of SO2. Rising relative humidity from 0 to 40 % had no effect on the production of secondary organic aerosol in the case of 2,5-dihydrofuran, while it reduced the particle number and particle mass concentrations from the 2,3-dihydrofuran ozonolysis. The water-to-SO2 rate constant ratio for the 2,3-dihydrofuran Criegee intermediate was derived from the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yields in experiments with different relative humidity values, kH2O/kSO2 = (9.8 ± 3.7) × 10−5. The experimental results show that SO3 may not be the only intermediate involved in the formation or growth of new particles in contrast to the data reported for other Criegee intermediate–SO2 reactions. For the studied reactions, SO2 concentrations remained constant during the experiments, behaving as a catalyst in the production of condensable products. Computational calculations also show that the stabilised Criegee intermediates from the ozonolysis reaction of both 2,5-dihydrofuran and 2,3-dihydrofuran may react with SO2, resulting in the regeneration of SO2 and the formation of low-volatility organic acids.

A critical review of the definition of «food security in the context of the views of economists was conducted». The main indicators were analyzed that make it possible to determine the actual food security (FS) level of the country and the region. The methodology for determining the indicators for assessing the state of the food security, which exists at present, requires new approaches and improvements. The conducted research allowed the authors to combine indicators into groups. The research has shown that for the sake of a comprehensive, complete analysis of the state of food security, it is necessary to take into account the indicators: socio-economic, which takes into account such components as level and quality of life, solvency of the population, demographic factor; macroeconomic, such as gross aggregate product, gross domestic product, personal income, because the problem is systemic and related to the development of the country and its individual regions. From the author's point of view, in the strategic perspective, Ukraine should make the transition to the food safety indicators proposed by the Committee on World Food Security.

A proton transfer reaction ion-drift chemical ionization mass spectrometer (PTR-ID-CIMS) equipped with a hydronium (H3+O) ion source was developed and deployed near an industrial zone in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China in spring 2015 to investigate industry-related emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Air pollutants including formaldehyde (HCHO), aromatics, and other trace gases (O3 and CO) were simultaneously measured. Humidity effects on the sensitivity of the PTR-ID-CIMS for HCHO detection were investigated and quantified. The performances of the PTR-ID-CIMS were also validated by intercomparing with offline HCHO measurement technique using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (DNPH) cartridges and the results showed fairly good agreement (slope = 0.81, R2 = 0.80). The PTR-ID-CIMS detection limit of HCHO (10 s, three-duty-cycle averages) was determined to be 0.9–2.4 (RH = 1–81.5 %) parts per billion by volume (ppbv) based on 3 times the standard deviations of the background signals. During the field study, observed HCHO concentrations ranged between 1.8 and 12.8 ppbv with a campaign average of 4.1 ± 1.6 ppbv, which was comparable with previous HCHO observations in other similar locations of China. However, HCHO diurnal profiles showed few features of secondary formation. In addition, time series of both HCHO and aromatic VOCs indicated strong influence from local emissions. Using a multiple linear regression fit model, on average the observed HCHO can be attributed to secondary formation (13.8 %), background level (27.0 %), and industry-related emissions, i.e., combustion sources (43.2 %) and chemical productions (16.0 %). Moreover, within the plumes the industry-related emissions can account for up to 69.2 % of the observed HCHO. This work has provided direct evidence of strong primary emissions of HCHO from industry-related activities. These primary HCHO sources can potentially have a strong impact on local and regional air pollution formation in this area of China. Given the fact that the YRD is the largest economic zone in China and is dense with petrochemical industries, primary industrial HCHO emissions should be strictly monitored and regulated.

Buts: identifier et caractériser les troubles érectiles chez des patients pris en charge pour la maladie de Lapeyronie (MLP). Matériel et méthodes: étude prospective monocentrique colligeant 25 patients pris en charge pour la MLP dans un hôpital du Sénégal entre Janvier 2012 et décembre 2013. Les variables de l’étude étaient: l’âge, l’existence ou non d’une insuffisance érectile selon l’indice international de la fonction érectile 5 (IIEF5), les facteurs de comorbidité, le profil psychologique, les plaques de Lapeyronie, le degré et l’orientation de la courbure, la possibilité ou non d’intromission et le traitement du trouble érectile. Résultat: l’âge moyen était de 57 ± 8,7 ans. Onze patients avaient une dysfonction érectile (DE), 3 étaient en phase aigue et 8 en phase séquellaire. Le score IIEF-5 moyen était de 16,5 ± 4,3. Les facteurs de comorbidité tels que l’HTA et le diabète étaient notés chez 13 patients (52%). La plupart des plaques avaient une taille qui n’excédait pas 3 cm. Le degré de courbure moyen était de 33,6 ± 16,4 degrés. La majorité des patients (52%) avait une intromission sans gêne. Le degré d’incurvation avait un impact sur l’intromission lors des rapports sexuels à partir de 45 degrés. L’anxiété a été rapportée chez 19 patients (76%) parmi lesquels il existait 9 cas d’insuffisance de l’érection. Le traitement des troubles de l’érection a consisté à l’administration de sildénafil 50 mg. Il était noté une amélioration du score IIEF-5 après traitement chez la plupart des patients. Conclusion: La MLP peut altérer la vie sexuelle du patient. Ces troubles sont liés à l’affection elle-même et/ou au terrain sur lequel la maladie se développe.

But: Déterminer la fréquence et le profil des formes familiales de cancer de la prostate chez les sénégalais. Patients et méthodes: Nous avons effectué une étude prospective entre janvier 2008 et décembre 2010. Elle portait sur des familles sénégalaises ayant en leur sein un cas de cancer de la prostate. L’étude consistait à dépister le cancer de la prostate chez les apparentés de premier degré de 40 ans ou plus. Résultats: Parmi les 237 apparentés éligibles au dépistage,119 avaient participé. Ils étaient 79 frères (66,3%) et 40 fils (33,6%). L’âge moyen des apparentés-fils était de 48,1 ± 6,4 ans (40-65 ans) et celui des apparentés-frères était de 63,2 ± 12,7 ans (40-93 ans). L’aspect de la prostate au toucher rectal était normal dans 78,9% des cas. Le taux médian de PSA total était de 1,2 ng/ml (0,1 et 45,8 ng/ml). Cinq apparentés ayant une anomalie au toucher rectal et/ou un taux de PSA total supérieur à 2,5 ng/ml avaient subi une biopsie prostatique. Ces biopsies avaient mis en évidence un cas d’adénocarcinome, deux cas de PIN (néoplasie intra-épithéliale) de haut grade et deux cas d’adénomyofibrome. Conclusion: Dans cette étude l’association de la race noire et d’un facteur de risque familial ne semblait pas augmenter la fréquence du cancer de la prostate dans notre pays. Cependant d’autres études sur cette question sont nécessaires.

Buts: rapporter les aspects étiopathogéniques, cliniques et thérapeutiques des rétrécissements iatrogènes de l’urètre (RIU). Patients et méthodes: étude prospective et descriptive colligeant 28 patients pris en charge pour RIU dans un service d’urologie au Sénégal du 1er Janvier 2012 au 30 Septembre 2013. L’âge, le lieu de provenance, les motifs de consultation, les délais de consultation, le type de manœuvres urétrales, l’examen physique, les examens complémentaires, les modalités thérapeutiques et leurs résultats ont été analysés. Résultats: l’âge moyen était de 34,5 ± 19,4 ans. La majorité des patients (89,5%) avait été adressée par des confrères exerçant dans des structures sanitaires où il n y avait pas un service d’urologie. Le délai de consultation moyen était de 5,4 ± 4,5 mois. La dysurie était la plainte la plus observée. Le cathétérisme urétral était la source la plus fréquente de RIU (75 %) et la sonde de Foley en latex a été la plus utilisée (86%). La débitmètrie avait été réalisée chez 04 patients et elle mettait en évidence une baisse du débit urinaire maximum en faveur d’une sténose urétrale. Les clichés d’UCRM avaient permis de confirmer la sténose urétrale chez 22 patients (79 %) et l’urètre bulbaire était le siège de prédilection. La dilatation urétrale aux bougies métalliques (Béniquets) avait été le moyen thérapeutique le plus noté. Avec un délai de suivi de 13 mois, les résultats thérapeutiques évalués sur l’existence ou non d’une dysurie étaient satisfaisants. Conclusion: Le RIU avait une incidence élevé. Le cathétérisme urétral a été la source la plus fréquente de RIU. Les sténoses peu étendues de l’urètre bulbaire étaient les formes les plus nombreuses et leur traitement par dilatation aux bougies métalliques a donné des résultats satisfaisants.

Objectives: To report our experience with urethroplasties due to male urethral stricture disease and to identify factors affecting the results. Patients and Methods: Between January 2007 and December 2010, 75 urethroplasties performed due to male urethral stricture were prospectively collected. Results: The mean age of patients was 52.6 years (median: 56 years) for urethroplasties by substitution and 47.3 years (median: 47.5 years) for anastomotic urethroplasties. The most common localization of urethral stricture was the bulbar urethra (63.3%). The length of the stricture averaged 1.95 ± 0.72 cm (median 2 cm) in anastomotic urethroplasties and 4.40 ± 1.54 cm (median 4 cm) in urethroplasties by substitution. The success rate was 69.8% (37/53) for anastomotic urethroplasties, 23.1% (3/13) for urethroplasties using Quartey's technique, 25% (1/4) for Blandy's urethroplasties. The success rate was 81% (17/21) in patients operated on by experienced surgeons, and 53.7% (29/54) in those operated on by young surgeons (p = 0.02). As Web-based course delivery continues to emerge and thrive as a legitimate alternative to classroom instruction, educational institutions and online instructors face the challenge of building and sustaining student trust in e-learning. The present study represents an attempt to address the challenge by identifying the social and technical factors that can likely induce or influence students’ perception about the trustworthiness of an e-learning course and integrating the factors into a socio-technical framework that can be empirically validated. The methodology used and the data obtained from a university-wide survey conducted in an American university are reported in this paper. The results indicate that two underlying dimensions, Course Instruction and Privacy and Security, exist among the 12 trust-inducing factors. Although all 12 factors were found to contribute to the respondents’ perception of the trustworthiness of an e-learning course, the Course Instruction dimension was rated about 10% higher than the Privacy and Security dimension. This suggests that the social and course design factors (e.g., reputation, design quality, instructor socio-communicative style), when used effectively, can help overcome students’ privacy and security concerns for an e-learning course. In Europe, river floods have been increasing in frequency and severity. These circumstances require the management of flood risk by integrating new concepts like urban resilience. Nevertheless, urban resilience seems to have no accurate meanings. That is why researchers are primarily concerned with defining resilience. Nevertheless, focus on research object seems to be more important than focus on conceptual debate (Resilience of what? Rather than what is resilience?). Thus the methodology designed here is focused on urban considerations. In fact, a system approach emphasizes technical networks' importance concerning urban resilience. Principles and assumptions applied in this research finally lead to the analysis of how urban networks are able to face natural hazards. In this context, a Web-GIS has been developed for analyzing resistance capacity, absorption capacity and recovery capacity of different technical networks. A first application has been carried out on a French agglomeration in order to analyze road network absorption capacity. This application is very specific but, thanks to this example, it is already possible to highlight the methodology's usefulness.

Natural hazards threaten the urban system and its components that are likely to fail. With their high degree of interdependency, urban networks and services are critical issues for the resilience of a city. And yet, network managers are scarcely aware of their flaws and dependencies and they are reluctant to take them into account. In order to develop an operational tool to improve urban resilience, we propose here an auto-diagnosis method to be completed by network managers. The subsequent confrontation of all diagnoses is the basis of collaborative research for problem identification and solution design. The tool is experimented with the Parisian urban transport society.

Two specimens of the west African goatfish, Pseudupeneus prayensis (Cuvier, 1829), were found for the first time off the Tunisian coast, in northern area. They constituted the third Mediterranean record of this fish. Both specimens were studied and described, and some biological observations were reported. Same taxonomic characters were concomitantly determined on two west African goatfish caught off the coast of Senegal, for comparison. The occurrence of Pseudupeneus prayensis in the area and the Mediterranean Sea is discussed and commented.

The reactions of Cl atoms with a series of unsaturated aldehydes have been investigated for the first time using a relative method. In order to obtain additional information for a qualitative structure versus reactivity discussion, we have also determined the rate coefficients for the reactions of atomic chlorine with their respective saturated aldehydes. These relative measurements were performed at room temperature and atmospheric pressure of air and N2, by using ethane, propene and 1-butene as reference compounds. The weighted average relative rate constants obtained, kCl±2σ (in units of cm3 molecule−1 s−1) were: trans-2-pentenal (1.31±0.19)×10−10; trans-2-hexenal (1.92±0.22)×10−10; trans-2-heptenal (2.40±0.29)×10−10; n-pentanal (2.56±0.27)×10−10; n-hexanal (2.88±0.37)×10−10; n-heptanal (3.00±0.34)×10−10. Finally, results and atmospheric implications are discussed and compared with the reactivity with OH and NO3 radicals.

La linfadenitis caseosa (LAC) es una enfermedad bacteriana supurativa crónica que afecta a ovinos. El agente etiológico es Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. El diagnóstico diferencial con otras afecciones que presentan manifestaciones clínicas similares sólo puede hacerse sobre la base del aislamiento y la identificación del agente etiológico. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar metabólica y genéticamente al agente causal de abscesos granulomatosos observados en ovinos en la región patagónica. En las muestras, se observó un contenido caseoso rodeado de una membrana fibrosa, y en el examen histopatológico, un centro de necrosis caseosa rodeado por células epitelioides, linfocitos y polinucleares. Mediante estudios microscópicos, bacteriológicos y moleculares fue confirmada la infección causada por C. pseudotuberculosis biovar ovis.Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is a chronic bacterial, infectious and contagious disease caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. It affects sheep and results in abscesses of the lymph nodes in subcutaneous tissue, as well as in internal organs such as lungs, liver and kidneys. Differential diagnosis of the disease is based on the isolation and biochemical identification of the etiological agent. The purpose of this study was to characterize the bacteria isolated from typical CLA lesions in sheep from Patagonia, Argentina, at metabolic and genetic levels. Macroscopic observations show a fibrous membrane containing caseous necrotic tissue. Histopathological analysis shows an eosinophilic necrotic area surrounded by epitheloid cells and polymorphonuclear infiltration. Other analyses performed such as microscopic observations, in vitro culture, biochemical tests and 16s rDNA sequencing confirmed diagnosis of caseous lymphadenitis due to C. pseudotuberculosis.

We recently showed that variants in GJB2 explained Hearing Impairment (HI) in 34.1% ( n = 15/44) of multiplex families in Senegal. The present study aimed to use community-based nationwide recruitment to determine the etiologies and the clinical profiles of childhood HI in Senegal. Participants with early onset HI were included after clinical examination, including audiological assessment by pure tone audiometry and/or auditory brainstem response. We investigated a total of 406 participants from 295 families, recruited from 13/14 administrative regions of Senegal. Male/female ratio was 1.33 (232/174). Prelingual HI was the most common type of HI and accounted for 80% ( n = 325 individuals). The mean age at medical diagnosis for congenital HI was computed at 3.59 ± 2.27 years. Audiological evaluation showed sensorineural HI as the most frequently observed HI (89.16%; n = 362 individuals). Pedigree analysis suggested autosomal recessive inheritance in 61.2% (63/103) of multiplex families and sporadic cases in 27 families (26.2%; 27/103), with a consanguinity rate estimated at 93% (84/90 families). Genetic factors were likely involved in 52.7% (214/406) of the cases, followed by environmental causes (29.57%; 120/406). In 72 cases (17.73%), the etiology was unknown. Clinically, non-syndromic HI was the most common type of HI (90.6%; n = 194/214 individuals). Among families segregating syndromic cases, type 2 Waardenburg syndrome was the most common (36.3%; 4/11 families). This study revealed putative genetic factors, mostly associated with high consanguinity rate, as the leading causes of early-onset HI in Senegal. This study aimed to investigate GJB2 (MIM: 121011) and GJB6 (MIM: 604418) variants associated with familial non-syndromic hearing impairment (HI) in Senegal. We investigated a total of 129 affected and 143 unaffected individuals from 44 multiplex families by segregating autosomal recessive non-syndromic HI, 9 sporadic HI cases of putative genetic origin, and 148 control individuals without personal or family history of HI. The DNA samples were screened for GJB2 coding-region variants and GJB6-D3S1830 deletions. The mean age at the medical diagnosis of the affected individuals was 2.93 ± 2.53 years [range: 1−15 years]. Consanguinity was present in 40 out of 53 families (75.47%). Variants in GJB2 explained HI in 34.1% (n = 15/44) of multiplex families. A bi-allelic pathogenic variant, GJB2: c.94C>T: p.(Arg32Cys) accounted for 25% (n = 11/44 families) of familial cases, of which 80% (n = 12/15) were consanguineous. Interestingly, the previously reported “Ghanaian” founder variant, GJB2: c.427C>T: p.(Arg143Trp), accounted for 4.5% (n = 2/44 families) of the families investigated. Among the normal controls, the allele frequency of GJB2: c.94C>T and GJB2: c.427C>T was estimated at 1% (2/148 ∗ 2) and 2% (4/148 ∗ 2), respectively. No GJB6-D3S1830 deletion was identified in any of the HI patients. This is the first report of a genetic investigation of HI in Senegal, and suggests that GJB2: c.94C>T: p.(Arg32Cys) and GJB2: c.427C>T: p.(Arg143Trp) should be tested in clinical practice for congenital HI in Senegal.

This study investigated the seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) immunoglobulin G (IgG) during the first pandemic wave in Senegal. The seroprevalence rate of SARS-CoV-2 IgG was assessed in 10 cities in Senegal by testing plasma from volunteers attending healthcare clinics for reasons unrelated to coronavirus disease 2019 ( n =3231) between June and October 2020. Founder mutations have been reported in BRCA1 and BCRA2 in different ethnic groups with inherited breast cancer. Testing of targeted mutations in specific populations is important for cancer prevention in mutation carriers. In Sub-Saharan Africa, only a few studies have reported specific founder mutations in inherited breast cancer. The pathogenic variant c.815_824dup of BRCA1 has been reported as the most frequent among African American populations with inherited breast cancer and was supposed to have a West African origin. Recent report from Senegal identified this variant in women with inherited breast cancer at the highest frequency ever reported. The variant was linked to a common haplotype confirming its founder effect in West Africa. Background: Hemodialysis patients are among high-risk groups for COVID-19. Africa is the continent with the lowest number of cases in the general population but we have little information about the disease burden in dialysis patients., Objectives: This study aimed to describe the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the hemodialysis population of Senegal., Patients and Methods: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional survey, between June and September 2020 involving 10 public dialysis units randomly selected in eight regions of Senegal. After seeking their consent, we included 303 patients aged ≥ 18 years and hemodialysis for ≥ 3 months. Clinical symptoms and biological parameters were collected from medical records. Patients' blood samples were tested with Abbott SARS-CoV-2 Ig G assay using an Architect system. Statistical tests were performed with STATA 12.0., Results: Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was 21.1% (95% CI = 16.7-26.1%). We noticed a wide variability in SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence between regions ranging from 5.6 to 51.7%. Among the 38 patients who underwent nasal swab testing, only six had a PCR-confirmed infection and all of them did seroconvert. Suggestive clinical symptoms were reported by 28.1% of seropositive patients and the majority of them presented asymptomatic disease. After multivariate analysis, a previous contact with a confirmed case and living in a high population density region were associated with the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies., Conclusion: This study presents to our knowledge the first seroprevalence data in African hemodialysis patients. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has had a dramatic global impact on public health and social and economic infrastructures. Here, we assess the immunogenicity and anamnestic protective efficacy in rhesus macaques of an intradermal (i.d.)-delivered SARS-CoV-2 spike DNA vaccine, INO-4800, currently being evaluated in clinical trials. Vaccination with INO-4800 induced T cell responses and induced spike antigen and RBD binding antibodies with ADCP and ADCD activity. Sera from the animals neutralized both the D614 and G614 SARS-CoV-2 pseudotype viruses. Several months after vaccination, animals were challenged with SARS-CoV-2 resulting in rapid recall of anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein T cell and neutralizing antibody responses. These responses were associated with lower viral loads in the lung. Background: A vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 is of high urgency. Here the safety and immunogenicity induced by a DNA vaccine (INO-4800) targeting the full length spike antigen of SARS-CoV-2 are described., Methods: INO-4800 was evaluated in two groups of 20 participants, receiving either 1.0 mg or 2.0 mg of vaccine intradermally followed by CELLECTRA® EP at 0 and 4 weeks. Thirty-nine subjects completed both doses; one subject in the 2.0 mg group discontinued trial participation prior to receiving the second dose. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04336410., Findings: The median age was 34.5, 55% (22/40) were men and 82.5% (33/40) white. Through week 8, only 6 related Grade 1 adverse events in 5 subjects were observed. None of these increased in frequency with the second administration. No serious adverse events were reported. All 38 subjects evaluable for immunogenicity had cellular and/or humoral immune responses following the second dose of INO-4800. By week 6, 95% (36/38) of the participants seroconverted based on their responses by generating binding (ELISA) and/or neutralizing antibodies (PRNT IC 50 ), with responder geometric mean binding antibody titers of 655.5 [95% CI (255.6, 1681.0)] and 994.2 [95% CI (395.3, 2500.3)] in the 1.0 mg and 2.0 mg groups, respectively. For neutralizing antibody, 78% (14/18) and 84% (16/19) generated a response with corresponding geometric mean titers of 102.3 [95% CI (37.4, 280.3)] and 63.5 [95% CI (39.6, 101.8)], in the respective groups. By week 8, 74% (14/19) and 100% (19/19) of subjects generated T cell responses by IFN-ɣ ELISpot assay with the median SFU per 10 6 PBMC of 46 [95% CI (21.1, 142.2)] and 71 [95% CI (32.2, 194.4)] in the 1.0 mg and 2.0 mg groups, respectively. Arginase is a complex and unique enzyme that plays diverse roles in health and disease. By metabolizing arginine, it can shape the outcome of innate and adaptive immune responses. The immunomodulatory capabilities of arginase could potentially be applied for local immunosuppression or induction of immune tolerance. With the use of an enhanced DNA delivery approach, we designed and studied a DNA-encoded secretable arginase enzyme as a tool for immune modulation and evaluated its immunomodulatory function in vivo . Strong immunosuppression of cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) and CD8 T cells, as well as macrophages and dendritic cells, was observed in vitro in the presence of an arginase-rich supernatant. To further evaluate the efficacy of DNA-encoded arginase on in vivo immunosuppression against an antigen, a cancer antigen vaccine model was used in the presence or absence of DNA-encoded arginase. Significant in vivo immunosuppression was observed in the presence of DNA-encoded arginase. The efficacy of this DNA-encoded arginase delivery was examined in a local, imiquimod-induced, psoriasis-like, skin-inflammation model. Pretreatment of animals with the synthetic DNA-encoded arginase led to significant decreases in skin acanthosis, proinflammatory cytokines, and costimulatory molecules in extracted macrophages and dendritic cells. The coronavirus family member, SARS-CoV-2 has been identified as the causal agent for the pandemic viral pneumonia disease, COVID-19. At this time, no vaccine is available to control further dissemination of the disease. We have previously engineered a synthetic DNA vaccine targeting the MERS coronavirus Spike (S) protein, the major surface antigen of coronaviruses, which is currently in clinical study. Here we build on this prior experience to generate a synthetic DNA-based vaccine candidate targeting SARS-CoV-2 S protein. The engineered construct, INO-4800, results in robust expression of the S protein in vitro. Following immunization of mice and guinea pigs with INO-4800 we measure antigen-specific T cell responses, functional antibodies which neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 infection and block Spike protein binding to the ACE2 receptor, and biodistribution of SARS-CoV-2 targeting antibodies to the lungs. This preliminary dataset identifies INO-4800 as a potential COVID-19 vaccine candidate, supporting further translational study.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the most incriminated genes in inherited breast/ovarian cancers. Several pathogenic variants of these genes conferring genetic predisposition have been described in different populations but rarely in sub-Saharan Africa. The objectives of this study were to identify pathogenic variants of the BRCA genes involved in hereditary breast cancer in Senegal and to search for a founder effect. We recruited after free informed consent, 27 unrelated index cases diagnosed with breast cancer and each having a family history. Mutation screening of the genes identified a duplication of ten nucleotides c.815_824dupAGCCATGTGG, (p.Thr276Alafs) (NM_007294.3) located in exon 11 of BRCA1 gene, in 15 index cases (allelic frequency 27.7%). The pathogenic variant has been previously reported in African Americans as a founder mutation of West African origin. Haplotypes analysis of seven microsatellites surrounding the BRCA1 gene highlights a shared haplotype encompassing ~400 kb between D17S855 and D17S1325. This haplotype was not detected in none of 15 healthy controls. Estimation of the age of the pathogenic variant suggested that it occurred ~1400 years ago. Background: Pathogenic variants associated with hereditary breast cancer have been reported for BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA1/2) genes in patients from multiple ethnicities, but limited information is available from sub-Saharan African populations. We report a BRCA2 pathogenic variant in a Senegalese family with hereditary breast cancer., Methods: An index case from a consanguineous family and nineteen healthy female relatives were recruited after informed consent. Along with this family, 14 other index cases with family history of breast cancer were also recruited. For the control populations we recruited 48 healthy women with no cancer diagnosis and 48 women diagnosed with sporadic breast cancer without family history. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood. All BRCA2 exons were amplified by PCR and sequenced. Sequences were compared to the BRCA2 GenBank reference sequence (NM_000059.3) using Alamut Software., Results: We identified a novel nonsense pathogenic variant c.5219 T > G; p.(Leu1740Ter) in exon 11 of BRCA2 in the index case. The pathogenic variant was also identified in three sisters and one daughter, but was absent in the controls and unrelated cases., Conclusions: This is the first report of a novel BRCA2 pathogenic variant in a Senegalese family with hereditary breast cancer. This result confirms the diversity of hereditary breast cancer pathogenic variants across populations and extends our knowledge of genetic susceptibility to breast cancer in Africa.
