When organic matter, especially sodium oxalate (Na2C2O4), accumulates to a certain extent, it will seriously affect the alumina production process in the refinery and therefore urgently needs to be removed. This work attempts to illuminate the benefits of ultrasonic intensification of the crystallization process of Na2C2O4, taking the alumina refinery waste liquor, i.e., flat plate washing liquor, as a case study. The effects of different operating parameters (seed crystal addition amount, caustic soda concentration, reaction time, ultrasonic power) on the crystallization behavior and yield are discussed, and it is found that ultrasonic can increase the Na2C2O4 removal rate to 70.4%. The addition of ultrasonic promotes the morphological evolution of Na2C2O4 and is of great significance to the optimization of the components of the precipitated Na2C2O4. Specifically, the proportion of Na2C2O4 in the crystallized product reaches 64% with conventional conditions, while it reaches 77% with ultrasonic conditions. Therefore, ultrasonic can greatly reduce the alkali loss caused by the crystallization process of Na2C2O4 in flat plate washing liquor, which has great economic benefits.

Abstract The active center for the adsorption and activation of carbon dioxide plays a vital role in the conversion and product selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Here, we find multiple metal sulfides CuInSnS4 octahedral nanocrystal with exposed (1 1 1) plane for the selectively photocatalytic CO2 reduction to methane. Still, the product is switched to carbon monoxide on the corresponding individual metal sulfides In2S3, SnS2, and Cu2S. Unlike the common metal or defects as active sites, the non-metal sulfur atom in CuInSnS4 is revealed to be the adsorption center for responding to the selectivity of CH4 products. The carbon atom of CO2 adsorbed on the electron-poor sulfur atom of CuInSnS4 is favorable for stabilizing the intermediates and thus promotes the conversion of CO2 to CH4. Both the activity and selectivity of CH4 products over the pristine CuInSnS4 nanocrystal can be further improved by the modification of with various co-catalysts to enhance the separation of the photogenerated charge carrier. This work provides a non-metal active site to determine the conversion and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Photocatalytic H2 evolution has been regarded as a promising technology to alleviate the energy crisis. Designing graphitic carbon nitride materials with a large surface area, short diffusion paths for electrons, and more exposed reactive sites are beneficial for hydrogen evolution. In this study, a facile method was proposed to dope P into a graphitic carbon nitride framework by calcining melamine with 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid. Meanwhile, PCN nanosheets (PCNSs) were obtained through a thermal exfoliation strategy. Under visible light, the PCNS sample displayed a hydrogen evolution rate of 700 μmol·g−1·h−1, which was 43.8-fold higher than that of pure g-C3N4. In addition, the PCNS photocatalyst also displayed good photostability for four consecutive cycles, with a total reaction time of 12 h. Its outstanding photocatalytic performance was attributed to the higher surface area exposing more reactive sites and the enlarged band edge for photoreduction potentials. This work provides a facile strategy to regulate catalytic structures, which may attract great research interest in the field of catalysis.

Abstract Efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to high‐calorific‐value CH4, an ideal target product, is a blueprint for C1 industry relevance and carbon neutrality, but it also faces great challenges. Herein, we demonstrate unprecedented hybrid SiC photocatalysts modified by Fe‐based cocatalyst, which are prepared via a facile impregnation‐reduction method, featuring an optimized local electronic structure. It exhibits a superior photocatalytic carbon‐based products yield of 30.0 µmol g−1 h−1 and achieves a record CH4 selectivity of up to 94.3%, which highlights the effectiveness of electron‐rich Fe cocatalyst for boosting photocatalytic performance and selectivity. Specifically, the synergistic effects of directional migration of photogenerated electrons and strong π‐back bonding on low‐valence Fe effectively strengthen the adsorption and activation of reactants and intermediates in the CO2 → CH4 pathway. This study inspires an effective strategy for enhancing the multielectron reduction capacity of semiconductor photocatalysts with low‐cost Fe instead of noble metals as cocatalysts.

High content sulfur (S2−) in Bayer liquor can increase alkali consumption, accelerate equipment corrosion, especially seriously affect alumina production. The removal of S2− in Bayer liquor is studied using ultrasonic enhanced ozone method, which significantly improves the removal efficiency. Results indicate that the best removal efficiency of 93.83 % is obtained with reaction duration of 20 min, oxygen flow rate of 80 L/h, ultrasonic power of 60 W and reaction temperature of 60 °C. The comparative analysis shows that the removal efficiency of S2− is 25.34 % higher than that of ozone (O3) system after introducing ultrasound (US), indicating that US accelerates the mass transfer process of O3 and increases the hydroxyl radicals (·OH) content. For further explanation of the mechanism of US/O3 system, EPR and XPS spectra are applied to analyze the content of free radical and the form of sulfur in Bayer liquor, indicating that the content of free radical in US/O3 system is more than US and O3 systems, and all sulfur is converted to SO42− after full oxidation.

Visible-light-driven N2 reduction into NH3 in pure H2O provides an energy-saving alternative to the Haber–Bosch process for ammonia synthesizing. However, the thermodynamic stability of N≡N and low water solubility of N2 remain the key bottlenecks. Here, we propose a solution by developing a WO3−x hollow sphere with oxygen vacancies. Experimental analysis reveals that the hollow sphere structure greatly promotes the enrichment of N2 molecules in the inner cavity and facilitates the chemisorption of N2 onto WO3−x-HS. The outer layer’s thin shell facilitates the photogenerated charge transfer and the full exposure of O vacancies as active sites. O vacancies exposed on the surface accelerate the activation of N≡N triple bonds. As such, the optimized catalyst shows a NH3 generation rate of 140.08 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 7.94 times higher than the counterpart WO3-bulk.

Van der Waals heterostructures made up of different two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered considerable attention as anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and doping can significantly influence their electronic structures and lithium diffusion barriers. In this work, the effects of heteroatom (X = N, O, P, and S) doping in the graphene of the graphene/silicene (G/Si) heterostructure are comprehensively examined by using first-principles calculations. The stacking stability and mechanical stiffness of G/Si and doped G/Si (XG/Si) exhibit that N-doping can improve the structural stability of G/Si, thereby ensuring good cycling performance. The densities of states reveal that the dopants (N, O, and S) can greatly increase the electronic conductivity of G/Si. Importantly, the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of Li are primarily affected by the dopant and the doping site, resulting in ultrafast Li diffusivity. Therefore, N-doped G/Si at doping site 1 (S1) shows a good and balanced property, which exhibits high potential to enhance the electrical performance of G/Si materials and offers a reference for selecting dopants in other 2D anode materials for LIBs.

Abstract Manufacturability evaluation is an effective way to shorten the development period, optimize manufacturing processes, and reduce product costs. The manufacturability of a product depends on the processing ability of specific manufacturing resources. The development of a manufacturing resources model serves as the foundation for manufacturability evaluation. To better utilize the information on manufacturing resources, this study adopted a hybrid approach by integrating the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm and the genetic algorithm to group manufacturing resources based on manufacturing and geometric features. The information model of manufacturing resources was built by using the object-oriented method. Subsequently, the framework to evaluate manufacturing capability based on manufacturing resources was defined. Further, an application sample was exploited and its results were analyzed. The results of the subgroup showed that the hybrid algorithm was reliable and valid and helped improve the overall performance of the company chosen for this study. The proposed approach enhanced feasibility in decision-making and facilitated the management to make more informed decisions.

The Shanxi Formation Shan-2 Lower Sub-member transitional shale in the eastern Ordos Basin is characterized by high total organic carbon value, wide distribution, and large single-layer/cumulative thickness; it is the key target interval for transitional shale gas exploration. Based on drilling, logging, 3D seismic, and natural energy spectrum data, this study discusses the spatial distribution and controlling factors of complex lithology in the transitional shale stratum. Using the multi-lithological eigenvalue method, the lithologic differential distribution characteristics of the Shan-2 Lower Sub-member were identified through seismic attribute analysis and post-stack seismic parameter inversion. On this basis, the controlling factors of lithology spatial difference distribution are revealed by paleogeomorphology restoration, the sedimentary environmental indicator characteristics of shale, and seismic facies division. The results indicate that the lithology distribution of transitional shale strata in the Shan-2 Lower Sub-member is significantly different, and the geomorphological pattern of interjacent depressions and highlands lays a foundation for the formation of the sedimentary system. The environmental and energy differences of paleo-sedimentary water form a sedimentary environment with frequent facies transitions, which controls the distribution of sediments. Th/U and Th/K radios, which indicate redox conditions and sedimentary water energy during the early sedimentary stage of the Shan-2 Lower Sub-member, show that the geomorphic uplift area is characterized by a high-energy transitional environment of mainly developed sandstone and silty mudstone, while the depression is relatively low-energy under a brackish water reduction environment, mainly composed of both dark and carbonaceous shale. During the late sedimentary stage of the Shan-2 Lower Sub-member, when geomorphic control was weakened, it presented a shallow-water, high-energy, and oxidized transitional environment, with a lithology dominated by the complex interbedding of fine-grained sandstone, silty shale, shale, carbonaceous shale, and coal seam. Therefore, it is inferred that the Shan-2 Lower Sub-member may have developed as a barrier island-lagoon sedimentary model. The early depositional period was dominated by barrier island-lagoon-tidal flat depositional combination, thence the sedimentary environment gradually evolved into a tidal flat-swamp environment.

Due to their reliability, affordability and high safety, rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have garnered a lot of attention. Nevertheless, undesirable long-term cycle performance and the inadequate energy density of cathode materials impede the development of ZIBs. Herein, we report a layered CaV4O9-MXene (Ti3C2Tx) composite assembled using CaV4O9 nanosheets on Ti3C2Tx and investigate its electrochemical performance as a new cathode for ZIBs, where CaV4O9 nanosheets attached on the surface of MXene and interlamination create a layered 2D structure, efficiently improving the electrical conductivity of CaV4O9 and avoiding the stacking of MXene nanosheets. The structure also enables fast ion and electron transport. Further discussion is conducted on the effects of adding MXene in various amounts on the morphology and electrochemical properties. The composite shows an improved reversible capacity of 274.3 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, superior rate capabilities at 7 A g−1, and a high specific capacity of 107.6 mA h g−1 can be delivered after 2000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1. The improvement of the electrochemical performance is due to its unique layered structure, high electrical conductivity, and pseudo capacitance behavior.

The stoichiometric photoreaction of CO2 with H2O is one of the big challenges in photocatalysis. An artificial photosynthetic system based on a direct and indirect Z-scheme heterostructure is synthesised, enabling simultaneous CO2 reduction to HCOOH and H2O oxidation to O2.

MALAT1-associated small cytoplasmic RNA (mascRNA) is a highly conserved transfer RNA–like (tRNA-like) noncoding RNA whose function remains largely unknown. We show here that this small RNA molecule played a role in the stringent control of TLR-mediated innate immune responses. mascRNA inhibited activation of NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling and the production of inflammatory cytokines in macrophages stimulated with LPS, a TLR4 ligand. Furthermore, exogenous mascRNA alleviated LPS-induced lung inflammation. However, mascRNA potentiated the phosphorylation of IRF3 and STAT1 and the transcription of IFN-related genes in response to the TLR3 ligand poly(I:C) both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, mascRNA was found to enhance K48-linked ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of TRAF6, thereby negatively regulating TLR-mediated MyD88-dependent proinflammatory signaling while positively regulating TRIF-dependent IFN signaling. Additionally, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein H (hnRNP H) and hnRNP F were found to interact with mascRNA, promote its degradation, and contribute to the fine-tuning of TLR-triggered immune responses. Taken together, our data identify a dual role of mascRNA in both negative and positive regulation of innate immune responses.

Mortierella alpina has a strong capacity for lipid accumulation. Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) plays an important role in affecting the flow of intracellular carbon sources and reducing power NADPH for lipid biosynthesis. In this study, the effect of various IDHs (NAD+- and NADP+-specific) in M. alpina on the lipid accumulation was investigated through homologous overexpression. The results showed that the transcription level and enzyme activity of the IDHs from M. alpina (MaIDHs) in homologous overexpressing strains were higher than those of the control strain, but that their biomass was not significantly different. Among the various NAD+-specific MaIDH1/2/3 overexpression, NAD+-MaIDH3 reduced total lipid content by 12.5%, whereas overexpression NAD+-MaIDH1 and NAD+-MaIDH2 had no effect on fatty acid content. Intracellular metabolites analysis indicated that the overexpression NAD+-MaIDH3 strain had reduced the fatty acid accumulation, due to its greater carbon flux with the tricarboxylic acid cycle and less carbon flux with fatty acid biosynthesis. For the NADP+-MaIDH4/5/6 recombinant strains overexpressing only NADP+-MaIDH4 enhanced the total fatty acid content by 8.2%. NADPH analysis suggested that this increase in lipid accumulation may have been due to the great reducing power NADPH is produced in this recombinant strain. This study provides theoretical basis and guidance for the analysis of the mechanism of IDH function and the potential to improve lipid production in M. alpina.

New surface coordination photocatalytic systems that are inspired by natural photosynthesis have significant potential to boost fuel denitrification. Despite this, the direct synthesis of efficient surface coordination photocatalysts remains a major challenge. Herein, it is verified that a coordination photocatalyst can be constructed by coupling Pd and CTAB-modified ZnIn2S4 semiconductors. The optimized Pd/ZnIn2S4 showed a superior degradation rate of 81% for fuel denitrification within 240 min, which was 2.25 times higher than that of ZnIn2S4. From the in situ FTIR and XPS spectra of 1% Pd/ZnIn2S4 before and after pyridine adsorption, we find that pyridine can be selectively adsorbed and form Zn⋅⋅⋅C-N or In⋅⋅⋅C-N on the surface of Pd/ZnIn2S4. Meanwhile, the superior electrical conductivity of Pd can be combined with ZnIn2S4 to promote photocatalytic denitrification. This work also explains the surface/interface coordination effect of metal/nanosheets at the molecular level, playing an important role in photocatalytic fuel denitrification.

For achieving the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, developing hydrogen energy, the green and clean energy, shows a promising perspective for solving the energy and ecological issues. Herein, firstly, we used the hydrothermal method to synthesize the ZnS(en)0.5 as the precursor. Then, ZnS/ZnO composite was obtained by the in situ transformation of ZnS(en)0.5 with heat treatment under air atmosphere. The composition, optical property, morphology, and structural properties of the composite were characterized by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra (Uv-vis Abs), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy image (TEM). Moreover, the content of ZnO in ZnS/ZnO was controlled via adjustment of the calcination times. The visible-light response of ZnS/ZnO originated from the in situ doping of N during the transformation of ZnS(en)0.5 to ZnS/ZnO under heat treatment, which was verified well by XPS. Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiments demonstrated that the sample of ZnS/ZnO-0.5 h with 6.9 wt% of ZnO had the best H2 evolution activity (1790 μmol/h/g) under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm), about 7.0 and 12.3 times that of the pure ZnS and ZnO, respectively. The enhanced activities of the ZnS/ZnO composites were ascribed to the intimated hetero-interface between components and efficient transfer of photo-generated electrons from ZnS to ZnO.

The dolomite reservoir of the fourth member of Dengying Formation in Moxi area of Sichuan Basin is thin, is fast in lateral variation, and has P-impedance difference from the surrounding rock; it is difficult to identify and predict the dolomite reservoir and fluid properties by conventional poststack seismic inversion. Through the correlation analysis of core test data and logging P-S-wave velocity, this work proposed a formula to calculate the shear wave velocity in different porosity ranges and solved the issue that some wells in the study area have no S-wave logging data. AVO forward analysis reveals that whether the gas reservoir of dolomite reservoir is located at the top of the fourth member of Dengying Formation is the main factor affecting the variation of AVO type. Through cross-plotting analysis of elastic parameters, it is found that P-S-wave velocity ratio and fluid factor are sensitive parameters to gas-bearing property of dolomite reservoir in the study area. By comparing the inversion results of prestack parameters such as density, P-wave impedance, S-wave impedance, P-S-wave velocity ratio, and fluid factor, it is found that the gas-bearing prediction of dolomite reservoir by using P-S-wave velocity ratio and fluid factor obtained from simultaneous prestack inversion had the highest coincidence rate with actual drilling data. At last, according to the distribution characteristics of fluid factor and P-S-wave velocity ratio, the favorable gas-bearing areas of dolomite reservoir in the fourth member of Dengying Formation in the study area are finely predicted, and the next favorable exploration areas were pointed out.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a group of plant steroid hormones that play important roles in regulating plant development. In addition, BRs show considerable functional redundancy with other plant hormones such as gibberellins (GAs). BRASSINAZOLE RESISTANT1 (BZR1) and BRI1-EMS-SUPPRESSOR1 (BES1) transcription factors are negative feedback regulators of BR biosynthesis. This study provides evidence for the roles of MdBZR1 and MdBZR1-2like in promoting GA production. These results also show that BRs regulate GA biosynthesis to improve salt tolerance in apple calli. Moreover, this research proposes a regulatory model, in which MdBZR1 and MdBZR1-2like bind to the promoters of GA biosynthetic genes to regulate their expression in a BR-dependent manner. The expression of key GA biosynthetic genes, MdGA20ox1, MdGA20ox2, and MdGA3ox1 in yeast helps to maintain normal growth even under intense salt stress. In summary, this study underscores the roles of MdBZR1 and MdBZR1-2like in improving salt tolerance by regulating GA biosynthesis in apple calli.

A composite concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) tube square column is a new type of composite column, where GFRP is externally wrapped over several GFRP square tubes to form a multicavity GFRP tube, and then concrete is poured inside. External GFRP wrapping methods can be divided into two types: entirely wrapped and strip-type wrapped methods. The former is superior to the latter in terms of performance under stress. However, difficulties are introduced in the construction process of the former, and substantial materials are required to wrap the entire structure. To examine the axial compressive performance for this new type of composite column and the impact of the wrapping method, we designed and fabricated one type of entirely wrapped composite column and two types of strip-type wrapped composite columns with clear spacings of 85 mm and 40 mm, respectively, and performed static axial compression tests. Through tests and numerical simulations, we obtained the failure mode, load–displacement curve, and load–strain curve of the specimen, and analyzed the impact of the externally wrapped GFRP on the mechanical behavior of the composite column. The results show that the composite column reached the peak load before the fracture of the GFRP tube fiber occurred, and the bearing capacity declined sharply to approximately 75% of the peak load after the fiber fractured, then entered a platform section, thereby displaying ductile failure. As the wrapped layers of GFRP strips increased, the load capacity of the specimen exhibited a linear growth tendency. Compared with the performance of the entirely wrapped method, the load capacity of the specimens in the W5040 group declined 9.8% on average, and the peak efficiency of the GFRP strips increased by 50%, thereby indicating that the use of appropriate GFRP layers and strip distance intervals can ensure the appropriate bearing capacity of composite columns and full utilization of GFRP material properties.

A novel microbial fuel cell-assisted electro-permanganate process (MFC-PM) was proposed for enhanced diclofenac degradation compared to that of the permanganate oxidation process. By utilizing eco-friendly bio-electricity in situ, the MFC-PM process could activate the simultaneous anodic biological metabolism of urea and the cathodic electro-permanganate process. Density functional analysis and experimental evidence revealed the reactive manganese species (Mn(VII)aq, Mn(VI)aq, Mn(V)aq, and Mn(III)aq), generated via single electron transfer, contributed to diclofenac degradation in the cathodic chamber. The sites of diclofenac with a high Fukui index were preferable to be attacked by reactive manganese species, and diclofenac degradation was mainly accomplished through the ring hydroxylation, ring opening, and decarboxylation processes. Biological detection revealed clostridia were the primary electron donor in the anode chamber in an anaerobic environment. Furthermore, maximum output power density of 1.49 W m−3 and the optimal removal of 94.75% diclofenac were obtained within 20 min under the conditions of pH = 3.0, [DCF]0 = 60 µM, and [PM]0 = 30 µM. Diclofenac removal efficiency increased with external resistance, higher PM dosage, and lower catholyte pH. In addition, the MFC-PM process displayed excellent applicability in urine and other background substances. The MFC-PM process provided an efficient and energy-free bio-electricity catalytic permanganate oxidation technology for enhancing diclofenac degradation.

Abstract With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the removal of nitrogen-containing compounds (NCCs) from gasoline fuel has become a more and more important research subject. In this work, we have successfully synthesized TiO2/α-Fe2O3 heterogeneous photocatalysts with different mass ratios of TiO2 vs. α-Fe2O3. Taking photocatalytic denitrification of typical alkali NCCs, pyridine, in gasoline fuel under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) as the model reaction, the TiO2/α-Fe2O3 hybrids have exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with pure TiO2 and α-Fe2O3, giving a pyridine removal ratio of ∼100% after irradiation for 240 min. The improved photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the integrative effect of the enhanced light absorption intensity and more efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Importantly, this type of heterogeneous photocatalysts can be easily separate in the reaction medium by an external magnetic field that is very important for industrial purpose. In addition, major reaction intermediates have been identified by the liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) and a tentative photocatalytic denitrification mechanism has been proposed.

A composite concrete column with encased fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) confined concrete cores (EFCCC) is proposed in this paper. The cross-sectional form of the EFCCC column is composed of several orderly arranged FRP confined concrete cores (FCCCs) surrounding a filled core concrete. This novel composite column has several advantages, such as higher compressive capacity, stronger FRP confinement, and ductile response. The compressive experiment is employed to investigate the compressive behavior of the EFCCC column with deferent parameters, such as outside concrete and stirrups. Test results show that the main failure mode of the EFCCC column with and without an outside concrete or stirrups is tensile fracture of the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes. Compared to a reinforced concrete (RC) column, the strength and ductility of the EFCCC column was obviously improved by 20% and 500%, respectively. A finite element model (FEM) based on the Drucker–Prager (D-P) was developed that can accurately predict the axial compression behavior of the composite column with FRP confined concrete core. The predicted results obtained by using this FEM have excellent agreement with the experimental results.

The C-doped CdO photocatalysts were simply prepared by high-temperature solid-state process. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that the carbon was doped into CdO, resulting in the red-shift of the optical absorption of CdO. The photocatalytic behavior of CdO and C-doped CdO was evaluated under the visible light irradiation by using the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution as a model reaction. The C-doped CdO photocatalysts had higher photocatalytic activity over parent CdO under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the H2 production was due to the existence of CdS and the enhancement of visible light photocatalytic activity of H2 production was originated from the doping of carbon into the CdO lattice. The probably reaction mechanism was also discussed and proposed.
