Abstract Liver cirrhosis, a common liver disease, currently lacks specific targeted therapies. This study investigates the potential therapeutic effects of serum circulating proteins on cirrhosis from a genetic perspective, and identified six associated plasma proteins (SERPINA1, PSG5, NCAN, APOE, ADH1B, GM2A). To search for therapeutic drugs associated with circulating proteins, databases such as DrugBank and DGIdb are utilized. Phenome-wide Mendelian Randomization analysis of the six significantly associated proteins revealed that GM2A exhibited no notable side effects as a therapeutic target for cirrhosis, SERPINA1 may offer additional therapeutic benefits for cholelithiasis and emphysema. ADH1B serves as a potential drug target that could simultaneously reduce the risk of alcohol-related disorders and hypertension. Furthermore, PSG5 and APOE might increase the risk of cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and NCAN has the potential to additionally reduce the risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease NAFLD. In conclusions, this study substantiates, from a genetic perspective, the potential therapeutic target role of six plasma proteins in cirrhosis, while comprehensively evaluating their side effects.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects and possible mechanisms of action of ginseng on cerebral vasospasm and early brain injury (EBI) following hemorrhagic stroke. Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (n = 48) were randomly divided into sham operation (sham group), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) model (SAH group), normal saline (NS group), and Ginaton (Extract of Ginkgo Biloba Leaves Drops) intervention (gin group) groups. MCP-1 mRNA and tumor necrosis factor levels were detected using reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. The relative expression of mRNA was detected by Western blotting. Results: (1) Compared with the sham group, the SAH, NS, and gin groups had different degrees of neurological dysfunction. Compared with the SAH and NS groups, the neurological deficits in the gin group were significantly improved (P < 0.05). (2) Compared with the sham group, the relative expression levels of MCP-1 mRNA in the SAH, NS, and gin groups were 5.1 ± 0.9, 3.4 ± 0.6, and 2.5 ± 0.4, respectively; the relative expression levels of mRNA were 13.3 ± 2.4, 11.2 ± 1.8, and 3.8 ± 0.6, respectively. (3) The apoptosis rates of brain tissue in the sham, SAH, NS, and gin groups were 4.8 ± 0.7, 54.2 ± 10.3, 50.1 ± 7.4, and 28.4 ± 4.5, respectively. (4) Western blot showed that the relative expression levels of toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) protein in the sham, SAH, NS, and gin groups were 0.29 ± 0.03, 0.87 ± 0.15, 0.65 ± 0.13, and 0.41 ± 0.17, respectively; the relative expression levels of B protein were 0.21 ± 0.04, 0.96 ± 0.14, 0.73 ± 0.18, and 0.30 ± 0.05, respectively. Gin treatment could inhibit TLR-4 and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) protein expression. Conclusions: Dona tablets may inhibit activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, and SAH-induced inflammatory response, so as to reduce cerebral vasospasm and EBI.

BackgroundNumerous investigations have underscored the causal effect between chronic pain (CP) and gut microbiota, jointly contributing to the onset and development of widespread CP. Nonetheless, there was still uncertainty about the causal effect between gut microbiota and chronic regional pain (CRP).MethodsGenome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data of gut microbial taxa (MiBioGen Consortium: 211 microbiotas and the Dutch Microbiome Project: 207 microbiotas) and eight types of CRP were used to reveal the causal effect between persistent pain in a specific region of the body and gut microbiota. A two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) design was used. In order to ensure the accuracy of the results, multiple sensitivity analyses were employed.ResultsThis study uncovered significant causal associations between six gut microbial taxa and three types of CRP (forward: Genus Parabacteroides for general pain; Class Bacteroidia, Order Bacteroidales, and Phylum Bacteroidetes for back pain. Reverse: knee pain for Genus Howardella and Order Coriobacteriales) by forward and reverse MR analysis. These findings had been verified by a rigorous Bonferroni correction. Furthermore, this research identified 19 microbial taxa that exhibited potential correlations with four types of CRP. There are no significant or potential gut microbiotas that were associated with other types of CRP, including fascial pain, stomach or abdominal pain, and hip pain.ConclusionThis two-sample bidirectional MR analysis unveiled the causality between gut microbial taxa and eight CRP conditions. The findings reveal the interplay between CRP and 6 gut microbiotas while also delineating 19 potential specific microbial taxa corresponding to diverse locations of persistent pain.

Abstract Catalytic glycosylation is a vital transformation in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry due to its ability to expediate the large-scale oligosaccharide synthesis for glycobiology studies with the consumption of minimal amounts of promoters. Herein we introduce a facile and efficient catalytic glycosylation employing glycosyl ortho−2,2-dimethoxycarbonylcyclopropylbenzoates (CCBz) promoted by a readily accessible and non-toxic Sc(III) catalyst system. The glycosylation reaction involves a novel activation mode of glycosyl esters driven by the ring-strain release of an intramolecularly incorporated donor-acceptor cyclopropane (DAC). The versatile glycosyl CCBz donor enables highly efficient construction of O-, S-, and N-glycosidic bonds under mild conditions, as exemplified by the convenient preparation of the synthetically challenging chitooligosaccharide derivatives. Of note, a gram-scale synthesis of tetrasaccharide corresponding to Lipid IV with modifiable handles is achieved using the catalytic strain-release glycosylation. These attractive features promise this donor to be the prototype for developing next generation of catalytic glycosylation.

Abstract Disruption of gamma‐amino butyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) synaptic clustering and a decrease in the number of GABAARs in the plasma membrane are thought to contribute to alteration of the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission, which promotes seizure induction and propagation. The multipass transmembrane protein cleft lip and palate transmembrane protein 1 (Clptm1) controls the forward trafficking of GABAAR, thus decaying miniature inhibitory postsynaptic current (mIPSC) of inhibitory synapses. In this study, using a pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)‐induced epilepsy rat model, we found that Clptm1 regulates epileptic seizures by modulating GABAAR‐mediated inhibitory synaptic transmission. First, we showed that Clptm1 expression was elevated in the PTZ‐induced epileptic rats. Subsequently, we found that downregulation of Clptm1 expression protected against PTZ‐induced seizures, which was attributed to an increase in the number of GABAARγ2s in the plasma membrane and the amplitude of mIPSC. Taken together, our findings identify a new anti‐seizure target that provides a theoretical basis for the development of novel strategies for the prevention and treatment of epilepsy.

Background and aimPrevious studies have reported an association between gut microbiota and cirrhosis. However, the causality between intestinal flora and liver cirrhosis still remains unclear. In this study, bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to ascertain the potential causal effect between gut microbes and cirrhosis.MethodsLarge-scale Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) data of cirrhosis and gut microbes were obtained from FinnGen, Mibiogen consortium, and a GWAS meta-analysis of Alcoholic cirrhosis (ALC). Two-sample MR was performed to determine the causal relationship between gut microbiota and cirrhosis. Furthermore, a bi-directional MR analysis was employed to examine the direction of the causal relations.ResultIn MR analysis, we found that 21 gut microbiotas were potentially associated with cirrhosis. In reverse MR analysis, 11 gut microbiotas displayed potentially associations between genetic liability in the gut microbiome and cirrhosis. We found that the family Lachnospiraceae (OR: 1.59, 95% CI:1.10–2.29) might be harmful in cirrhotic conditions (ICD-10: K74). Furthermore, the genus Erysipelatoclostridium might be a protective factor for cirrhosis (OR:0.55, 95% CI:0.34–0.88) and PBC (OR:0.68, 95% CI:0.52–0.89). Combining the results from the MR analysis and reverse MR analysis, we firstly identified the Genus Butyricicoccus had a bi-directional causal effect on PBC (Forward: OR: 0.37, 95% CI:0.15–0.93; Reverse: OR: 1.03, 95% CI:1.00–1.05).ConclusionWe found a new potential causal effect between cirrhosis and intestinal flora and provided new insights into the role of gut microbiota in the pathological progression of liver cirrhosis.

Background and aimNutrient production by intestinal microbiota corresponds to regulate appetite while gut microbial composition was influenced by diet ingestion. However, the causal relationship between gut microbial taxa and anorexia nervosa (AN) remains unclear. Mendelian Randomization (MR) is a novel research method that effectively eliminates the interference of confounding factors and allows for the exploration of the direct causal effects between exposure and outcome. Presently,artificial intelligence algorithms represented by deep learning have achieved advanced results and been successfully used in fields such as image classification,biometric recognition and medical assisted diagnosis by virtue of ultra-large-scale data sets and powerful computing resources.However,due to many restrictions in the actual environment,it is impossible to obtain a large number of samples or the cost of obtaining samples is too high.Therefore,studying the learning algorithm in the case of small samples is the core driving force to promote the intelligent process,and it has also become a current research hot-spot.Few-shot learning is the algorithm to learn and solve the problem under the condition of limited supervision information.Firstly,it describes the reasons why few-shot learning is difficult to generalize from the perspective of machine learning theory.Secondly,according to the design motivation of the few-shot learning algorithm,existing algorithms are classified into three categories:representation learning,data expansion and learning strategy,and their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed.Thirdly,we summarize the commonly used few-shot learning evaluation methods and the performance of existing models in public data sets.Finally,we discuss the difficulties and future research trends of small sample image classification technology to provide re-ferences for future research.

Mytilus coruscus is a dominant shellfish in the Yangtze estuary and its adjacent sea area. Food deprivation often occurs during their growth due to fluctuations in algal abundance caused by seasonal freshwater flushing and high-density aquaculture mode. To investigate the coping strategies of M. coruscus to starvation stress, electron microscopy and differential proteomic analysis were performed on the critical feeding organ gill of the mussels after 9 days of starvation. The electron microscopy results showed that the cilia of the mussel gills were dissolved, and the gaps between gill filaments widened under starvation. Differential proteomic analysis revealed that phagocytosis-related proteins such as ATPeV1E, ATPeV1C, LAMP1_2 and CTSL were significantly upregulated, and the phagocytosis pathway was significantly enriched (p < 0.05). In addition, the corin content in gill and myeloperoxidase level as well as the number of dead cells in blood were both significantly increased (p < 0.05). What’s more, proteomic data suggested that immune maintenance, cellular transport and metabolism related pathways were significantly enriched, which illustrated an immune and metabolism responses under starvation. This study reveals for the first time that phagocytosis functions as an essential strategy for M. coruscus to cope with starvation, which provides new scientific knowledge and a theoretical basis for understanding the adaptation mechanisms of mussel to starvation and for rational optimization of mussel culture patterns.

Wood quality is an important indicator for modern sawmills. Internal wood characteristics can be derived from their correlations with external appearances. In this study, we developed linear regression models to predict knot size from surface features of Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) using data collected from 53 trees. For this, manual measurements and X-ray computed tomography scanning technology was respectively used to obtain internal and external features of 1,297 knots. Nowadays, diarrheic shellfish toxicity (DSP) toxin and microplastics (MPs) are commonly found in coastal waters worldwide. Due to their widespread use, their persistence and toxicity, they may induce adverse effects on Mytilus coruscus. However, the underlying toxic mechanisms of DSP and MPs on M. coruscus remain unclear. This study explored the physiological index and transcriptome change of the digestive gland of adult M. coruscus exposed for 3 days to polystyrene (PS) MPs (0.2 mg/L, 90-100 μm) and Prorocentrum lima alone or in combination. The results showed that the CAT activity and MDA content significantly increased, respiration rate and feeding rate significantly decreased. The combination of MPs and P. lima caused more structural damage to the rough surface endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria in the digestive glands of M. coruscus. The transcriptome analysis showed that 485 and 220 genes were up- and down-regulated, respectively, after exposure to P. lima; 1,989 up-regulated DEGs and 1,098 down-regulated DEGs were identified after exposure to MP treatment, and 1,004 up-regulated DEGs and 664 down-regulated DEGs were identified after exposure to the combination of P. lima and MPs. The DEGs were mainly enriched in the lysosome, mRNA surveillance pathway, carbon metabolism, the mTOR signaling pathway, the complement and coagulation cascades, and the TNF signaling pathway. The MP, P. lima exposure mainly induced the expression of RNA-binding protein musashi, serine/arginine repetitive matrix protein 1, low affinity immunoglobulin epsilon Fc receptor, toll-like receptor 2, caspase 7, calmodulin, E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase, serine/threonine-protein kinase PRP4, glutathione S-transferase, and heat shock 70 kDa protein. MPs and P. lima poison mainly influence the expression of RNA transport, immune related gene, apoptosis, signal related gene, and antioxidant gene change. The combination of MPs and P. lima has a synergistic toxic effect. This study provides a new insights into its physiological and molecular responses of M. coruscus to MPs and P. lima toxic exposure.

Rainfall variations between seasons could affect phosphorus translocation from rainfed saline soil to wheat plants. Whether deep-banded P application increases wheat yield compared to traditional P placement under rainfed coastal saline conditions remains a question. This study investigated the impact of season, P placement, and genotype on root distribution, agronomic performance, and P utilization in wheat grown under rainfed coastal saline conditions. Four wheat genotypes (two tall genotypes (Alice and Shavano) and two dwarf genotypes (AK58 and LX99)) were grown in a saline field with five P placement treatments (Top-dressed High P input (TopHP), Deep-banded High P input (DeepHP), Top-dressed Reduced P input (TopRP), Deep-banded Reduced P input (DeepRP), and no P supply (No P)) for two consecutive seasons. Root length density (RLD), agronomic traits, nutrient concentrations in grain and straw, and P utilization efficiency were determined. Statistical analysis was employed to compare the P utilization across treatments. TopHP increased RLD at a 0–20 cm depth, while deep-banded P increased RLD at a 20–40 cm depth. The wet season (2021–2022) resulted in higher grain yields, more fertile spikelets, and fewer non-fertile spikelets in all four genotypes than the dry season (2020–2021). The highest 1000-kernel weights occurred in DeepHP or TopHP. Deep-banded P outperformed top-dressed P placement in terms of P utilization efficiency for LX99, Shavano, and AK58 (not Alice) in both seasons. Nutrient concentrations/accumulations showed inconsistent patterns due to significant genotype × P placement interactions. PCA analysis revealed that first two PCs accounted for 56.19% and 60.13% of the variance in the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 seasons, respectively. The first component (PC1) represented root spatial distribution and straw weight, while the second component (PC2) represented 1000-kernel weight, grain number per head, and grain yield. Altered P utilization efficiency mediated by P placement was associated with changes in wheat root distribution, agronomic traits, and nutrient concentrations in straw and grain. The increased wheat yield in the wet season (2021–2022) was attributed to higher rainfall.

Peking Union Medical College sets up a review course of Biochemistry in the general introduction of medicine for the 4+4 clinical medicine pilot class. The mixed classroom design was carried out with Moodle platform to help students with different bachelor education experience to review, consolidate and strengthen their knowledge of Biochemistry as a compulsory course for premedical students. Under the support of Moodle, we created an autonomous learning environment, integrating Macmillan sapling e-learning resources, and establishing a chapter-based pre-class test to improve students' mastery of basic knowledge. Moodle's “Quiz” and “Workshop” were used in case-based learning to help students to link biochemical changes to clinical manifestation of illness. The positive exploration of the teaching mode of Biochemistry by Moodle fits to the training of the students in the pilot class.

Phosphorus (P) management in wheat grown under saline soil conditions requires a better understanding of how P placement and salt stress affect spatial root distribution, plant agronomic performance, and nutrient utilization. A column culture experiment was conducted with two wheat genotypes, Alice and LX99, five P placements (‘Top Dressed High P’, TopHP; ‘Top Dressed Reduced P’, TopRP; ‘Deep Banded High P’, DeepHP; ‘Deep Banded Reduced P’, DeepRP; and ‘No P added’, −P), and two salt stress levels (‘salt stress’, +S; ‘non-salt stress’, −S) to investigate differences in biomass accumulation, nutrient utilization, and root distribution (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–100 cm) among treatments. Deep P placement under non-salt stress increased root distribution at 20–40 cm soil depth for both genotypes compared to top P placement. P application under salt stress increased root weight at all three soil depths in both genotypes and P accumulation in aboveground plant parts (except for LX99 under TopRP). The highest P utilization efficiency occurred in Alice with TopRP and in LX99 with DeepRP under non-salt and salt stresses. Overall, a coordinated adaptation in allocating biomass between belowground and aboveground plant parts, along with altered nutrient utilization, was necessary to reach a growth compromise in response to P supply changes and salinity. Therefore, genotype, P placement depth, and soil salinity should be considered to improve wheat P utilization efficiency under saline conditions.

Microalgae are the primary source of food and energy for marine bivalves, and hence play a vital role in their development and growth. To characterize the microalgal feeding preference and the effects of fatty acid composition and digestive gland microorganisms on Mytilus, four microalgal species (Chlorella vulgaris, Chaetoceros muelleri, Isochrysis zhanjiangensis and Platymonas helgolandica) were used in a mix and single feeding experiments. The feeding preference in the mix feeding was determined using quantitative PCR analysis of water samples obtained at various time periods from biodeposits. The results demonstrated that C. muelleri and I. zhanjiangensis were selectively filtered by M. coruscus, while C. vulgaris and P. helgolandica were preferentially rejected. Individuals of M. coruscus fed with C. muelleri and I. zhanjiangensis had higher levels of fatty acids contents, particularly some unsaturated fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which rose by 63.6% after 28 days feeding with C. muelleri. In the digestive glands of M. coruscus fed these two microalgae diets, the relative abundance of digestion-related bacteria such as Polaribacter was also dramatically enhanced, indicating that they had a greater ability to degrade and metabolize microalgal polysaccharides. The metabolic pathway may also play a dominant role as a feedback reaction to microalgal diet feeding, according to potential function prediction. In comparison to C. vulgaris and P. helgolandica, our findings showed that C. muelleri and I. zhanjiangensis had a better nutritional value and could be utilized more efficiently by M. coruscus, implying that C. muelleri and I. zhanjiangensis may be employed to boost M. coruscus growth and output.

Histidine-containing dipeptides (HCDs) have been demonstrated with important physiological functions in vertebrates. This study was executed to investigate the contents and metabolic profiles of HCDs in an invertebrate, the mussel Mytilus coruscus was selected. The carnosine/anserine analysis indicated that M. coruscus contain anserine with a higher concentration than that of carnosine, and the increases in HCDs concentrations due to β-alanine injection and carnosine injection were observed, confirming that Mytilus belongs to a species with the ability of HCDs synthesis. Further metabolomics analysis was performed based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry technology to explore the effects of β-alanine injection and carnosine injection, respectively, on the whole mussel tissue. A total of 1,868 significantly differential metabolites (SDMs) were detected between the β-alanine injected, carnosine injected, and the control M. coruscus groups. The SDMs induced by β-alanine injection were enriched mainly in energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism of mussel, while carnosine injection mainly disrupted arachidonic acid metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and retinol metabolism in the mussel. The activities of antioxidant enzymes from the whole mussel tissue extracts before and after β-alanine/carnosine injection were measured, and both treatments showed significant elevation of enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Considering the positive effects of β-alanine injection on mussel metabolism, this study provided a clue for the potential application of β-alanine supplementation in mussel farming.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role in the development of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We hypothesized that germline variants in the major EMT regulatory genes (SNAIL1, ZEB1, ZEB2, TWIST1) may influence the development of HBV-related HCC. We included 421 cases of HBsAg-positive patients with HCC, 1371 cases of HBsAg-positive subjects without HCC [patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) or liver cirrhosis (LC)] and 618 cases of healthy controls in the case-control study. Genotype, allele, and haplotype associations in the major EMT regulatory genes were tested. Environment-gene and gene-gene interactions were analysed using the non-parametric model-free multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) method. The SNAIL1rs4647958T>C was associated with a significantly increased risk of both HCC (CT+CC vs. TT: OR=1.559; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.073-2.264; P=0.020) and CHB+LC (CT+CC vs. TT: OR=1.509; 95% CI, 1.145-1.988; P=0.003). Carriers of the TWIST1rs2285681G>C (genotypes CT+CC) had an increased risk of HCC (CG+CC vs. GG: OR=1.407; 95% CI, 1.065-1.858; P=0.016). Histidine-containing dipeptides (HCDs) are a family of non-protein, nitrogen-containing compounds with multiple physiological roles and are mainly present in excitable tissues of vertebrates. The distribution of HCDs in various animal species has been the subject of study for nearly 100 years. The aim of this research was to determine the content of the HCDs in the aquatic species collected from the Zhoushan fishing ground of the East China Sea. Using LC-MS/MS technology, the occurrence of carnosine, anserine, and homocarnosine in skeletal muscle of 38 aquatic species (26 teleosts, 6 molluscs, and 6 crustaceans) and chicken breast was investigated. Of the 38 aquatic species examined, 24 species (23 teleosts and 1 mollusc) contained considerable amounts (>5 ng/g wet tissue) of HCDs, and anserine was the major component of HCDs in their skeletal muscles. Only 5 teleosts contained homocarnosine. Most invertebrates, with the exception of the sepia Uroteuthis chinensis, did not contain HCDs. The present findings greatly expand the HCD distribution data and provide insight into understanding the roles of HCDs in different animals and a nutritional assessment for marine aquatic species.

Background/Aims: Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the major source of extracellular matrix (ECM). Therefore inhibiting HSC activation is considered as an effective strategy to inhibit the process of liver fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanism of methyl helicterate (MH) isolated from Helicteres angustifolia on the activation of HSCs. Methods: HSC-T6 cells were treated with various concentration of MH and autophagy was inhibited by 3-Methyl adenine (3-MA) or RNA interference. Cell viability was observed by MTT assay and cell colony assay. Cell cycle and apoptosis were analyzed using flow cytometry. Autophagic vacuoles were observed by transmission electron microscopy and monodansyl cadaverine (MDC) staining. Moreover, autophagy-related genes and proteins were detected using real-time PCR and Western blot assays, respectively. Results: MH significantly inhibited HSC activation, as evidenced by the inhibition of cell viability, colony formation and the expression of α-SMA and collagen I. MH caused cell cycle arrest in G2/M phase. Moreover, MH significantly induced apoptosis through regulating the mitochondria-dependent pathway and the activity of caspases. MH treatment significantly increased lysosomes and autophagosomes, and enhanced the formation of autophagic vacuoles and autophagic flux. Interestingly, inhibiting autophagy by 3-MA or RNA interference abolished the ability of MH in inhibiting HSC activation. On the other hand, induction of autophagy promoted MH-induced HSC apoptosis. Further study showed that MH-induced HSC apoptosis and autophagy was mediated by the JNK and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that MH-induced HSC apoptosis and autophagy may be one of the important mechanisms for its anti-fibrosis effect.

AIM:To investigate the distribution of serum specific IgE in children with allergic conjunctivitis and associated allergic diseases. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 708 cases of allergic conjunctivitis in children, according to age divided into the infant group(2 months to 1 years old)232 cases, the children group(>1 years to 3 years old)255 cases and the preschool group(>3 years to 6 years old)221 cases. A automatic in vitro detection system was used to detect serum inhaled allergens and food allergen specific IgE by immune capture method. A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the associated allergic diseases and consultation with relevant departments. RESULTS: The sIgE positive rate was the lowest in the infant group(87.1%). There were significant differences in the number of sIgE positive species in the infant group compared with those in the other two groups(χ2=10.96, 21.78; PPPCONCLUSION: With the increase of age, the positive rate and types of allergen in children with allergic conjunctivitis increased gradually. House dust mites become the primary inhalation allergen from infancy. Allergic diseases associated with allergic conjunctivitis in children are consistent with allergic march.

Background: Cardiotoxicity is one of the most serious chronic complications of anthracyclines therapy. Assessment of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) fails to detect subtle cardiac dysfunction of left ventricular (LV). This study aimed to detect and evaluate new parameters of subclinical anthracyclines' cardiotoxicity in children with solid tumor. Methods: A detailed echocardiographic examination was performed in 36 children with hepatoblastoma or rhabdomyosarcoma after receiving anthracyclines' chemotherapy and 36 healthy controls from January 2015 to December 2016. The LVEF, ratio of early diastolic peak velocity of transmitral flow (E) and septal diastolic e' mitral annular peak velocity (e'), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), and LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) were evaluated using M-mode, tissue Doppler imaging (TDI), and two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE), respectively. This study employed a Bac-to-Bac/Bombyx mori bioreactor to mass-produce immunogenic urease subunit B (UreB) from Helicobacter pylori.The signal peptide bombyxin from B. mori was used to promote secretory expression to improve expression levels and was designed and integrated into the UreB gene to generate the Bacmid/BmNPV/(signal peptide)-UreB baculovirus expression system. To determine whether the bombyxin signal peptide resulted in secretory expression of recombinant UreB (rUreB) and to determine the secretory efficiency, we tested the secretory expression level of rUreB in Bm5 cells using ELISA. To further investigate whether secretory expression affected cell viability, cells were evaluated using 0.4% trypan blue staining, and Bacmid/BmNPV/UreB without the signal peptide served as a control. The above recombinant bacmid constructs were injected to silkworm larvae, and the secretory expression level of rUreB was detected using SDS-PAGE and semi-quantitative western blot analysis. The results indicated that the bombyxin signal peptide directed the secretory expression of rUreB and that this expression improved the viability of Bm5 cells. Moreover, the results showed that the expression level of rUreB was 1.5 times higher with the Bacmid/BmNPV constructs containing the bombyxin signal sequence than those without the signal sequence. These results demonstrate that secretory expression can enhance rUreB expression levels and is likely to aid in the large-scale expression and yield of rUreB in silkworm larvae.

The aim of this study was to probe the potential anti-H. pylori activity of the synthetic antimicrobial peptide pexiganan, which is an analog of the peptide magainin, and its nanoparticles (PNPs) that were prepared in our laboratory. To compare their antibacterial effects in vitro and in vivo, studies of H. pylori growth inhibition, kinetics and resistance assays were undertaken. The gastric mucoadhesive efficiency and H. pylori clearance efficiency of pexiganan and PNPs were evaluated in rats and mice infected with H. pylori. The eradication of H. pylori was determined using urease tests and a microbial culture method. We observed that PNPs adhered to gastric mucosa more effectively owing to a prolonged stay in the stomach, which resulted in a more effective H. pylori clearance. In addition, PNPs had greater anti-H. pylori effect than pexiganan in infected mice. The amount of pexiganan required to eradicate H. pylori was significantly less using PNPs than the corresponding pexiganan suspension. The results confirmed that PNPs improved peptide stability in the stomach and more effectively eradicated H. pylori from mice stomachs than pexiganan.

The construction method for QC-LDPC (quasi-cyclic low density parity-check) code with modified two-dimensional generalized reed-solomon (2-D GRS) code is proposed using the generator polynomial of GRS code,so thus the constructed code can have better decoding performance.Meanwhile both the quasi dual-diagonal structure and proper weight distributions are considered during the construction.The QC-LDPC codes with different rates are used to compare with the new designed codes.Experimental results show that the proposed method can accelerate the construction and QC-LDPC codes constructed from the proposed method can have better decoding performance while with low encoding complexity.

A comparative study on the photophysical, electrochemical properties and photovoltaic performances of pure imidazole dyes containing varying linker groups is done. Two new organic dyes containing 4,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazole (BPI) unit as an electron donor, boron dipyrromethene (Bodipy) chromophore as a conjugate bridge, cyanoacetic acid as an electron acceptor, and phenylene (BPI-P) or thienyl (BPI-T) as a additional linker have been synthesized for fabricating dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). A reference dye (DPI-T) with 6,9-dimethoxy-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole as the donor has also been synthesized for comparison. The overall conversion efficiencies of 0.18%, 0.32%, and 1.28% were obtained for DSSCs based on BPI-P, BPI-T, and DPI-T, respectively. DPI-T was found to be more efficient than BPI-P and BPI-T because of its enhanced light harvesting efficiency and better coplanar geometry of the electronic structure.

Background: Delayed puberty can result either from constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDP) or idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH). Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test has been generally accepted as a current method for diagnosing delayed puberty. The objective of this research was to assess the cut-off values and the efficacy of GnRH stimulation test in the diagnosis of delayed puberty in both males and females. Methods: A study of 91 IHH, 27 CDP patients, 6 prepubertal children, and 20 pubertal adults was undertaken. Blood samples were obtained at 0, 30, 60, and 120 min after GnRH administration and the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured. In order to reduce the operational volume and ensure the real-time capability of navigation algorithm of Kalman filtering,a novel filtering method called single-satellite sequential extended Kalman filtering (S3EKF) was proposed based on extended Kalman filtering (EKF) and sequential processing,where the single-satellite was as basic filtering unit.Simulation results show that,compared with the traditional EKF method,the S3EKF method can decrease the computation load efficiently when the number of visible satellites is no less than 7,and the reduction of computation load increases with the increase of the satellite’s visible n r,the decrease will reach more than 50% when the number of visible satellites is no less than 15.On the other hand,the consistency and stability of navigation solution are good when the satellites and their number are time-vraiant in S3EKF method.

The entomopathogenic fungus L. lecanii has been developed as biopesticides and used widely for biological control of several insects in agricultural practice. Due to the lack of isolation/count methods for L. lecanii in soil, the persistence of this fungus in soil appears to have attracted no attention. A selective medium and count method for L. lecanii in soil based on cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was developed, and then the persistence and viability of this fungus in soil were investigated under field conditions between 2012 and 2014. The results showed that the rate of recovery for L. lecanii in soil on the selective CTAB medium was satisfactory. The minimum CFUs for L. lecanii on the selective medium (0.5 g/L CTAB) was about 102 conidia/g soil. The L. lecanii density in soil declined quickly in the first month after inoculation with fungal conidia, kept stable for 6 to 10 months, and then decreased gradually until undetectable. L. lecanii could persist for at least 14 months in the agricultural soil of northern China. The colony growth, conidia yield and germination rate on plates, as well as the median lethal concentration or times (LC50 or LT50) to aphids, mycelium growth in aphids and sporulation on aphids of L. lecanii did not change significantly during the persistence in soil. In general, the count method developed here was a very useful tool for monitoring the dynamics of natural or introduced L. lecanii populations in soil, and the data on the persistence of L. lecanii in soil reported here were helpful for biological control and environmental risk assessment.
