The propagation of coherent longitudinal and transverse waves in random distributions of spherical scatterers embedded in an elastic matrix is studied. The investigated frequency range is the vicinity of the resonance frequencies of the translational and rotational motion of the spheres forced by the waves, where strong dispersion and attenuation are predicted. A technique for making samples made of layers of carbide tungsten beads embedded in epoxy resin is presented, which allows control of the scatterers distribution, induce short-range positional correlations, and minimize the anisotropy of samples. Comparison between phase velocity and attenuation measurements and a model based on multiple scattering theory (MST) shows that bulk effective properties accurately described by MST are obtained from three beads layers. Besides, short-range correlations amplify the effect of mechanical resonances on the propagation of longitudinal and transverse coherent waves. As a practical consequence, the use of short-range positional correlations may be used to enhance the attenuation of elastic waves by disordered, locally resonant, elastic metamaterials, and MST globally correctly predicts the effect of short-range positional order on their effective properties., (© 2024 Acoustical Society of America.)

This paper presents a technique for measuring the complex shear modulus of thin slabs of viscoelastic solids based on the measurement of the reflection and transmission of plane shear waves through a sample inserted between two delays lines. Reproducible shear wave transmission through the sample is achieved by inserting bond layers with controlled thickness between the delay lines and the sample and by characterizing beforehand the bond rheology. The frequency dependent complex shear modulus is quantitatively evaluated from the transmission and reflection coefficients using an exact model of interferences within the delay line-bond-sample-bond-delay line sandwich and by selecting the solution among the muliple solutions of the inverse problem from considerations on time of flight and sample thickness. Thanks to its reproducibility and accuracy, this method appears as an original and efficient technique for quantitatively characterizing the high frequency shear modulus of attenuating materials.

The effective velocity and attenuation of longitudinal waves through random dispersions of rigid, tungsten-carbide beads in an elastic matrix made of epoxy resin in the range of beads volume fraction 2%-10% are determined experimentally. The multiple scattering model proposed by Luppé, Conoir, and Norris [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131(2), 1113-1120 (2012)], which fully takes into account the elastic nature of the matrix and the associated mode conversions, accurately describes the measurements. Theoretical calculations show that the rigid particles display a local, dipolar resonance which shares several features with Minnaert resonance of bubbly liquids and with the dipolar resonance of core-shell particles. Moreover, for the samples under study, the main cause of smoothing of the dipolar resonance of the scatterers and the associated variations of the effective mass density of the dispersions is elastic relaxation, i.e., the finite time required for the shear stresses associated to the translational motion of the scatterers to propagate through the matrix. It is shown that its influence is governed solely by the value of the particle to matrix mass density contrast.

We report an experimental study of the backscattering of a sound wave of frequency f by a surface vibrating harmonically at frequency F (F << f) and amplitude A in the regime where the Doppler effect overcomes bulk nonlinear effects. When the duration to of the analyzed time series of the scattered wave is small compared to the vibration period, the power spectrum of the backscattered wave is proportional to the probability density function of the scatterer velocity, which presents two peaks shifted from f by roughly 2fAomega/c (omega = 2piF). On the contrary, when t0 >> F(-1), sidebands at frequencies f +/- nF (n integer) appear in the power spectrum, which are due to the phase modulation of the backscattered wave induced by its reflection on a moving boundary. We use the backscattered power spectrum to validate the phase modulation theory of the Doppler effect in the latter case for 2kA << 1 and 2kA approximately > 1 (k = 2pif/c, where c is the wave velocity) and we test the validity of an acoustic nonintrusive estimator of A as a function of power spectrum bandwidth and of A itself.
