19. Does digitalization enhance the effects of lean production on social performance?

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to investigate whether Industry 4.0 digital technologies can enhance the effects of lean production on social performance. Design/methodology/approach: Survey data collected from China's manufacturing industry are used to test research hypotheses. Findings: The results reveal that the three dimensions of lean production (internal, customer and supplier) have a significant positive effect on social performance and that digital technology advancement (DTA) positively moderates these relationships. DTA adds only a marginal contribution to social performance. Practical implications: This study addresses a new challenging question from manufacturing firms: how to integrate lean, technology and people? The empirical findings provide timely and insightful practical guidance for managers to better understand the role of digital transformation in the traditional lean context. Originality/value: While digitalization is known to complement lean production, this study shows digitalization also complements the effects of lean production on social performance. Abstract

Global supply networks are becoming increasingly fragmented and complex. At the same time, societal pressures surrounding the environmental accountability of firms are growing, with an increasing number of environmental scandals related to supply networks. Traditional governance frameworks of green supply chain management (GSCM) may be insufficient to deal with this new reality, because they do not consider supply network structure/complexity, and how these factors interact with different governance mechanisms. Our study takes into account the complex interplay between GSCM governance mechanisms, supply network structure/complexity, and environmental performance. We introduce a series of theoretical propositions grounded in an extensive review of the GSCM, supply networks, network complexity, and organizational design literatures. In particular, we argue that supply network structure and complexity directly affect GSCM effectiveness, but that these effects will be contingent upon the type of governance mechanism applied (formal or informal). Based on a theoretical framework derived from the resource-based view (RBV) theory, contents of a database of company profiles of 15 selected LSPs are analysed. Results show that all LSPs have been acquiring physical, human, information, knowledge and relational resources and then bundling them together in various specific manners to create inimitable and firm-specific capabilities. However, only some of them performed well financially. The findings contribute to the conceptualisation and measurement of strategic logistics resources and the identification of resource bundling processes. Abstract

The question of why employees don’t consider environmental goals as important as business goals has become one of the most topical issues in management research. Research on employee involvement in environmental management has revealed lots of organization- level antecedents, such as training, rewards, teamwork, supervisor/top management support. Firm-level studies often implicitly assume that employees react to the firm-level actions universally, neglecting the roles of employee- or individual-level antecedents, such as value, beliefs, personality, commitment, self-efficacy, etc. studied by sociologists (Stern, 2000) and psychologists (Schwartz, 1977). To-date, the few supply chain studies that have examined employees’ engagement in environmental behaviors, despite its importance in environmental initiatives, have focused on only organizational antecedents (Cantor, Morrow and Montabon, 2012; Gattiker et al., 2014) . The paper aims to reveal the joint effects of organizational- and individual-level antecedents to better explain why individual SC employees are (not) motivated to engage in pro-environmental behaviors (PEB). This study is a response to the recent call for more multi-level studies (Carter, Meschnig and Kaufmann, 2015) . By identifying and conceptualizing firm- and individual-levels antecedents and explaining how they are related, this study provides a platform to develop a multi-level theory on supply chain employee’s environmental engagement.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper theorizes and tests the effects of sustainable development of supply chains on cost‐reduction (lean), environmental (green) and financial (profitable) performance. Based on the resource orchestration theory, we argue that internal, supplier and customer sustainable development each orchestrate different types of resource and therefore their effects vary. Structural equation modeling of data from a survey of 203 Thai manufacturers was used to test a new theoretical model. Results confirm that financial performance was achieved through cost reduction created by customer sustainable development supported by internal and supplier sustainable development. On the other hand, better environmental performance created by internal sustainable development generated no financial gains. However, internal, supplier and customer sustainable development positively affected each other, and by acting together they made firms lean, green and profitable. Abstract

The focus of this thesis is to understand the initial formation of inter-firm relationships with the aim of establishing a long-term relationship in the offshore-wind sector. It is common to initiate relationships with pre-existing partners but less is known about how firms form relationships with strangers. This thesis attempts to answer a research question: 'How and why new inter-firm relationships are built in nascent industries with highly uncertain business environments?' The research involves three longitudinal case studies (12 pairs of supplier-buyer relationships) of three offshore wind (OSW) suppliers and one OSW buyer, and their relationships with new partners in a highly uncertain market and political context. By examining the early-stage relationships between a supplier and multiple new customers this study provides insights into supplier selection in the OSW sector. It identifies the main motivations for OSW supply chain companies seeking new partnerships and how they benefit from the new relationships despite facing high market risk and political uncertainty. Furthermore, this research reveals how inter-firm relationships progress (or fail) from one stage to another under high market risk and political uncertainty. This study argues that the way the selective process is being managed is as important as the levels of compatibility and complementarity and makes theoretical contributions on how to achieve greater understanding and knowledge advancement of dynamic relationship life-cycle management, effects of compatibility and complementarity, uncertainty and time series dimensions are made.
