The main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of lead (Pb) at various concentrations, as an abiotic factor, and the cross-talk between Pb and pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris)) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), as a biotic factor, on the defence responses of pea seedlings (Pisum sativum L. cv. Cysterski). The analysis of growth parameters for pea seedlings demonstrated that Pb at a low concentration, i.e., 0.025–0.0625 mM Pb(NO3)2, caused a hormesis effect, i.e., stimulation of seedling growth, whereas Pb at higher concentrations, i.e., 0.01–0.325 mM Pb(NO3)2, inhibited growth, which manifested as the inhibition of length and fresh biomass. The differences in the level of the main defence-related phytohormones, such as abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)—an auxin stimulating plant cell growth—depended on the dose of Pb, aphid infestation and direct contact of the stress factor with the organ. A high accumulation of soluble sugars in the organs of pea seedlings both at sublethal doses and hormetic doses at early experimental time points was observed. At 0 h and 24 h of the experiment, the hormetic doses of Pb significantly stimulated invertase activities, especially in the roots. Moreover, an increase was observed in the pisatin concentration in pea seedlings growing in the presence of different concentrations of Pb and in the case of cross-talk between Pb and A. pisum in relation to the control. Additionally, a significant induction of the expressions of isoflavone synthase (IFS) and 6α-hydroxymaackiain 3-O-methyltransferase (HMM) genes, which participate in the regulation of the pisatin biosynthesis pathway, in pea seedlings growing under the influence of sublethal 0.5 mM Pb(NO3)2 and hormetic 0.075 mM Pb(NO3)2 doses of Pb was noted. The obtained results showed that the response of P. sativum seedlings depends on the Pb dose applied, direct contact of the stress factor with the organ and the duration of contact. Fish provide energy, protein, and other important nutrients, including n-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and iodine. However, some species of fish could contain contaminants such as mercury and dioxins. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of fish consumption in Poland, including of sea and freshwater fish species, referring to some socio-economic determinants. The frequency of consumption was assessed using Food Propensity Questionnaire data from 1489 adults (722 males, 767 females) in 2019–2020. The fish consumption frequency in Polish adults was lower than the recommendation (at least twice a week). About 80% of respondents consumed fish less frequently than recommended. Sea fish were mostly consumed less than once a month (31.8%) or 1–3 times a month (30.9%). Most subjects (44.8%) consumed freshwater fish less than once a month. Consumption also depended educational level, economic status, place of residence, declared health status, and BMI value or BMI status. However, taking into account sex, the occurrence of these relationships was different between men and women. It seems that educational activities and dissemination of proper nutrition principles is necessary in order to increase the consumption of fish in Poland. Atherosclerotic plaque instability increases the risk of stroke. As such, determining the nature of an instability atherosclerotic plaque may speed up qualification for carotid endarterectomy (CEA), thus reducing the risk of acute vascular events. The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic value of oxidized LDL cholesterol (ox‐LDL), matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP‐9) and 8‐hydroxy‐2′‐deoxyguanosine (8‐OHdG) in serum as a prognostic markers of instability atherosclerotic plaques. Serum was collected from 67 patients who underwent CEA in accordance with the qualification criteria. The levels of ox‐LDL, MMP‐9 and 8‐OHdG were assessed by ELISA. The predictive value of the markers was determined based on an ROC curve, and the cut‐off points with the highest sensitivity and specificity were determined. Patients with unstable atherosclerotic plaque had significantly higher serum ox‐LDL, MMP‐9 and 8‐OHdG values. It was found that in patients before CEA, ox‐LDL >31.4 ng/mL was associated with an 82.5% probability of unstable atherosclerotic plaque, MMP‐9 >113.1 ng/mL with 78.6%, and 8‐OHdG >2.15 ng/mL with 64.7%. Multivariate regression analysis found ox‐LDL to be an independent factor associated with plaque instability. Patients with unstable plaques tend to have higher serum levels of ox‐LDL, MMP‐9 and 8‐OHdG compared to those with stable plaques. The optimal cut‐off point for ox‐LDL (AUC 0.86, p <0.0001) was 31.14 ng/mL, with 91.18% sensitivity and 78.79% specificity. The research addresses the pressing need to understand wind conditions for optimal wind energy utilization, a crucial aspect of achieving global energy sustainability. While previous studies have focused on assessing wind energy potential and terrain roughness, gaps persist in understanding how wind and spatial conditions affect blade geometry. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of local wind conditions on wind turbine blade geometry, integrating nonuniform wind inflow due to wind shear into the theoretical model. Through the paper, it explores blade design for varying inflow conditions and analyses the relationship between terrain type and blade designs. A novel approach to wind turbine blade design, utilizing a theoretical model that combines the local momentum theorem with insights from propeller vortex theory was adopted. Through the analysis, the authors demonstrate that variations in terrain significantly influence blade geometry, underscoring the necessity for tailored turbine designs based on local conditions. The findings reveal discrepancies in blade geometry across different turbine capacities and terrain types, offering novel insights into wind turbine performance optimization. By tailoring blade geometry to specific locations enhances resource utilization, offering insights for energy policymakers. The research provides validated methods for optimizing turbine geometric parameters, opening avenues for increased local investment in wind energy and promoting distributed energy development. Introduction: Snapping hip syndrome (SHS) occurs in 5-10% of the global population. A back and forth skip of the tendon of the dysfunctional muscle across the osseous prominence is the most common symptom of this condition. Mainly young generation suffers from SHS. Depending on the structures that cause an audible snap, snapping hip syndrome may be classified into intra-articular and extra-articular types. The main aim of the research was to assess the strength of the major hip muscles and static balance in patients with snapping hip syndrome.
