The Multi-scale Laboratories (MSL) are a network of European laboratories bringing together the scientific fields of analogue modeling, paleomagnetism, experimental rock and melt physics, geochemistry and microscopy. MSL is one of nine (see below) Thematic Core Services (TCS) of the European Plate Observing System (EPOS). The overarching goal of EPOS is to establish a comprehensive multidisciplinary research platform for the Earth sciences in Europe. It aims at facilitating the integrated use of data, models, and facilities, from both existing and new distributed pan European Research Infrastructures, allowing open access and transparent use of data. The TCS MSL network allows researchers to collaborate with other labs and scientists. By becoming part of the rapidly growing TCS MSL network, new laboratories are offered a platform to showcase their research data output, laboratory equipment and information, and the opportunity to open laboratories to guest researchers through the Transnational Access (TNA) program. The EPOS Multi-scale laboratories offer researchers a fully operational data publication chain tailored to the specific needs of laboratory research, from a bespoke metadata editor, through dedicated, (domain-specific) data repositories, to the MSL Portal showcasing these citable data publications. During this process the data publications are assigned with digital object identidiers (DOI), published with open licenses (e.g. CC BY 4.0) and described with standardized and machine-readable rich metadata (following the FAIR Principles to make research data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The diversity of experimental and analytical methods employed in such infrastructures reflects the multi-scale nature of the Earth system and is essential for the understanding of its evolution, for the assessment of geo-hazards, and for the sustainable exploitation of geo-resources. The TCS MSL is committed to make Earth science laboratory data FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. For this purpose, the TCS MSL has developed an online portal that brings together DOI-referenced data publications from research data repositories related to the TCS MSL context (https://epos-msl.uu.nl/). In addition, the TCS MSL has developed a Trans-national access (TNA) program that allows researchers and research teams to apply for physical or remote access to the participating EPOS MSL laboratories. Access is currently supported by national funding or in-kind contribution. Based on the EPOS Data policy & TNA General Principles, access is regulated by common rules and a transparent policy, including procedures and mechanisms for application, negotiation, proposal evaluation, user feedback, use of laboratory facilities and data curation. Access to EPOS Multi-scale laboratories is a unique opportunity to create new synergy, collaboration and innovation, in a framework of trans-national access rules. Unaffiliated European solid Earth sciences laboratories are welcome and encouraged to join the growing TCS MSL community.

In this study, an extensive paleomagnetic sampling (70 sites) was carried out in north-eastern Iran with the aim of reconstructing the rotation history of the outer margin of the Eurasia-Arabia collision area represented by the Ala-Dagh, Binalud and Kopeh-Dagh mountain belts. We sampled the red beds units from the Lower Cretaceous Shurijeh Fm. and from the Middle-Upper Miocene Upper Red Fm (URF). Paleomagnetic results from all the sampled areas show a homogeneous amount of CW rotations measured in the above-mentioned Formations. These paleomagnetic results suggest that the oroclinal bending process that caused the curvature of Alborz mountain belt in north Iran after the Middle-Late Miocene, also extended to the Ala-Dagh, Binalud and Kopeh-Dagh mountain belts, at the north-eastern border of the Arabia-Eurasia deforming zone. Based on our paleomagnetic results and on GPS, seismological, geomorphological and structural data available in the area, a hypothesis of tectonic evolution of the northern Iran-South Caspian Basin area, from Middle-Late Miocene to Present, is here proposed. In this model, the initiation of the oroclinal bending processes in northern Iran occurred about 6–4 myr ago, related to the impinging of North Iran between the South Caspian block and the southern margin of the Turan platform, driven by the northward subduction of the South Caspian basement under the Aspheron-Balkhan Sill. As paleomagnetic results from this study show a pattern of vertical axis rotations that is inconsistent with the present-day kinematics of the northern Iranian blocks as described by seismicity and GPS data, we suggest that the tectonic processes responsible for the bending of northern Iran mountain chains are no longer active and that the westward motion of the South Caspian basin, and therefore the initiation of opposite strike-slip motion along the Ashk-Abad and Shahrud faults, occurred very recently (∼2 My ago). We therefore propose that initiation of the northward subduction of the South Caspian basin below the Apsheron-Balkhan Sill and the westward extrusion of the South Caspian block did not occur at the same time, with the former occurring between the late Miocene and the Pliocene, and the latter during the Pleistocene.

The aim of this study was to verify whether it is possible to discriminate between the different pollution sources present in a mixed land use area of NE Italy on the basis of the magnetic properties and the element content of lichen transplants. Thalli of Pseudevernia furfuracea were collected in a pristine area of the South-Eastern Alps and exposed for 2 months in 40 sites located at the knots of a 700 m step grid covering ca. 40 km2 of a mosaic of agricultural, forested, industrial and urban areas. In this way, the samples could be analyzed after a defined period of time, and compared to pre-exposure conditions. The post-exposure element content and the magnetic data substantially agreed, revealing a rather modest anthropogenic impact on the territory, mostly limited to an industrial park. Since the magnetic mineralogy was homogeneous throughout the entire set of samples, with magnetite-like minerals as the main magnetic carriers, it was not possible to discriminate between PM originating from the different pollution sources. The contribution given by the industrial park could be confirmed by the multivariate analysis of the element data set. Conversely, it was possible to assess the low environmental impact of the largest local industry, a cement plant, located outside the industrial park. Notwithstanding the relatively short time of the survey, P. furfuracea was proven to be an effective accumulator for biomagnetic monitoring studies, its magnetic properties being excellent proxies for heavy metal pollution even when the anthropogenic impact on the territory is low.

In this study, we report an extensive paleomagnetic study (76 sites) carried out in the Alborz Mts. (northern Iran), with the aim of reconstructing the rotation history and the origin of curvature of this orogenic chain. The analyzed deposits are the sedimentary successions of the Upper Red Formation (Miocene), Lower Red Formation (Oligocene) and Eocene clastic units. Paleomagnetic results indicate that the Alborz Mts. can be considered a secondary arc that originated as a linear mountain belt that progressively acquired its present day curvature through opposite vertical axis rotations along its strike. The curvature of the arc was entirely acquired after the middle-late Miocene, which is the age of the youngest investigated sediments (Upper Red Formation). Overall, our paleomagnetic data indicate that the Alborz Mts. can be considered an orocline. Our results define, for the first time, the rotational history of the entire Alborz curved mountain belt, and enable us to reconstruct the paleogeographic and tectonic evolution of northern Iran in the framework of Arabia-Eurasia continental deformation. The kinematics inferred by the pattern of paleomagnetic rotations is at odds with the present day kinematics of northern Iran, characterized by the westward extrusion of the South Caspian block, and by a left lateral shear between Central Iran and the central and western sectors of the Alborz Mts. By integrating paleomagnetic data with stratigraphic, thermochronological, structural and GPS information, we propose that the initiation of South Caspian subduction and the activation of westward extrusion of South Caspian block occurred diachronously and that the initiation of the present-day kinematics of northern Iran was quite recent (Lower Pleistocene
