The early life and professional career of Dr. Satoru Takeuchi, a noted Japanese librarian, educator, and author, are explored here within the context of Japanese library education since World War II. Professor Takeuchi, now retired from the University of Library and Information Science (ULIS) in Tsukuba, Japan, has been an influential educator, administrator, and author in Japan for well over 40 years. He has written and translated books on children's literature, storytelling, library architecture, ethics, and comparative study of libraries and librarianship. His recent analyses of the work of S. R. Ranganathan have been very influential among library education faculty and students throughout the world. This article provides a brief look at a different cultural situation for LIS education, one that is both similar to but still different from the North American centric view. It shows how one individual was greatly influenced by the North American model but made his own adaptations based on Japanese traditions and culture.

Preparation of samples for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization of larger proteins requires enrichment with less abundant, NMR-active, isotopes such as 13C and 15N. This is routine for proteins that can be expressed in bacterial culture where low-cost isotopically enriched metabolic substrates can be used. However, it can be expensive for glycosylated proteins expressed in mammalian culture where more costly isotopically enriched amino acids are usually used. We describe a simple, relatively inexpensive procedure in which standard commercial media is supplemented with 13C-enriched glucose to achieve labeling of all glycans plus all alanines of the N-terminal domain of the highly glycosylated protein, CEACAM1. We demonstrate an ability to detect partially occupied N -glycan sites, sites less susceptible to processing by an endoglycosidase, and some unexpected truncation of the amino acid sequence. The labeling of both the protein (through alanines) and the glycans in a single culture requiring no additional technical expertise past standard mammalian expression requirements is anticipated to have several applications, including structural and functional screening of the many glycosylated proteins important to human health. A review of the history and growth of ASIS&T since its origin as the American Documentation Institute (ADI) reflects the development of the concept of information science. Spearheaded by Watson Davis in 1937, the ADI focused on micro-photographic techniques and bibliography and on documentation principles and practices. Despite a shaky start and meager funding, the ADI adapted to new technologies, terminology and subject analysis methods, and started the journal American Documentation in 1950. Growth in science research in the '50s and '60s sparked an explosion of technical reports, prompting coordination with the Special Libraries Association and other groups and leading to a demand for more specialized professional skills, which was met in the '60s and '70s by expansion and focus on education in information science. The membership shifted to a majority in academia and shrinking minority in industry, and debate continued over the geographic scope and name of the organization, which added "and Technology" to its name in 2000. American Documentation transitioned in stages into the Journal of the American Society for Information and Technology, while the Bulletin and Annual Review were added, and annual conferences provided another educational resource. The publications became the basis of an arrangement with the publisherWiley that would stabilize finances. Over 75 years, from ADI to ASIS to ASIS&T, the organization has met the evolving needs of the information science and technology community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
