Search

We present analyses of Suzaku XIS light curves and spectra of the BL Lac object OJ 287 with observations positioned primarily around proposed recurrent optical outbursts. The first two observations were performed in 2007 April 10 - 13 (epoch 1) and 2007 November 7 - 9 (epoch 2) that respectively correspond to a low and a high optical state and which, within the binary supermassive black hole model for OJ 287, precede and follow the impact flare. The last three observations, made consecutively during 2015 May 3 - 9 (epoch 3), were during the post-impact state of the 2013 disc impact and are the longest continuous X-ray observation of OJ 287 taken before the optical outburst in 2015 December. Intraday variability is found in both the soft (0.5 - 2 keV) and hard (2 - 10 keV) bands. The discrete correction function analysis of the light curves in both bands peaks at zero lag during epochs 2 and 3, indicating that the emission in both bands was cospatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. Power spectral densities of all three light curves are red noise dominated, with a rather wide range of power spectrum slopes. These X-ray spectra are overall consistent with power-laws but with significantly different spectral indices. In the 2015 observations the X-ray spectrum softens during the flare, showing an obvious soft X-ray excess that was not evident in the 2007 observations. We report the study of a huge optical intraday flare on November 12, 2021, at 2 am UT, in the blazar OJ287. In the binary black hole model it is associated with an impact of the secondary black hole on the accretion disk of the primary. Our multifrequency observing campaign was set up to search for such a signature of the impact, based on a prediction made eight years earlier. The first I-band results of the flare have already been reported by \cite{2024ApJ...960...11K}. Here we combine these data with our monitoring in the R-band. There is a big change in the R-I spectral index by $1.0\pm0.1$ between the normal background and the flare, suggesting a new component of radiation. The polarization variation during the rise of the flare suggests the same. The limits on the source size place it most reasonably in the jet of the secondary black hole. We then ask why we have not seen this phenomenon before. We show that OJ287 was never before observed with sufficient sensitivity on the night when the flare should have happened according to the binary model. We also study the probability that this flare is just an oversized example of intraday variability, using the Krakow-dataset of intense monitoring between 2015 and 2023. We find that the occurrence of a flare of this size and rapidity is unlikely. The extreme TeV blazar 1ES 0229+200 is a high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object. It has not shown intraday variability in extensive optical and X-ray observations. Nor has it shown any significant variability on any measurable timescale in the 1-100 GeV energy range over a 14-year span, but variations in the source flux around its average are present in the energy range above 200 GeV. We searched for intraday optical variability in 1ES 0229+200 as part of an ongoing project to search for variability and quasi-periodic oscillations in the high-cadence, nearly uniformly sampled optical light curves of blazars provided by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). 1ES 0229+200 was monitored by TESS in its Sectors 42, 43 and 44. We analysed the data of all these sectors both with the TESS provided lightkurve software and the eleanor reduction pipeline. We detected a strong, essentially symmetric flare that lasted ~6 hours in Sector 42. We fit the flare's rising and declining phases to exponential functions. We also analysed the light curve of Sector 42 using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP) and continuous auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) methods. The Sector 42 light curve displayed in the present work provides the first evidence of a strong, rapid, short-lived optical flare on the intraday timescale in 1ES 0229+200. The variability timescale of the flare provides the upper limit for the size of the emission region to be within (3.3\pm0.2 - 8.3\pm0.5)x10^{15}cm. Away from the flare, the slope of the periodogram's power spectrum is fairly typical of many blazars (\alpha<2), but the nominal slopes for the flaring regions are very steep (\alpha~4.3), which may indicate the electron distribution undergoes a sudden change. Blazars are characterized by largely aperiodic variability on timescales ranging from minutes to decades across the electromagnetic spectrum. The TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) mission provides continuous sampling of blazar variability on timescales ranging from tens of minutes to 27 days for a single sector observation. Proper removal of the background, thermal ramping, and onboard systematic effects are crucial to the extraction of a reliable blazar light curve. Multiple publicly available procedures have been created to correct for these effects. Using ground based observations from the Zwicky Transit Facility (ZTF) and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) as ``ground truth'' observations, we compare 6 different methods (Regression, Cotrending Basis Vectors (CBV), Pixel Level Decorrelation (PLD), eleanor, quaver, and simple differential photometry (SDP)) to each other, and to our ``ground truth'' observations, to identify which methods properly correct light curves of a sample of 11 bright blazars, including the suspected neutrino source TXS~0506+056. In addition to comparing the resulting light curves, we compare the slopes of the power spectral densities, perform least-square fitting to simultaneous ZTF data, and quantify other statistical qualities generated from the light curves of each method. We find that only three of the six methods compared (Simple Differential Photometry, eleanor, and quaver) produce TESS light curves consistent with the ground-based ZTF and ATLAS observations., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables

In a previous paper, we reported evidence for quasi-periodicities in the \textsl{TESS} light curves of BL Lacerate and two other blazars found serendipitously in the SDSS AGN catalog. In this work, we find tentative evidence for quasi-periodic features in the \textsl{TESS} observations of five sources in the fourth catalog of the Fermi--LAT (4FGL) sources: J090453.4$-$573503, J2345$-$1555, B0422+004, J002159.2$-$514028, and B0537$-$441. We analysed the \textsl{TESS} light curves of these blazars that we extracted using a customized approach. The quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are searched for using two timing analysis techniques: generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram and weighted wavelet Z-transform. Their apparent periods lie in the range of 2.8--6.5 days and have at least 3$\sigma$ significance in both of these methods. QPOs at such timescales can originate from the kink instability model which relates the quasi-periodic feature with the growth of kinks in the magnetized relativistic jets. We performed MCMC simulations to obtain the posterior distribution of parameters associated with this model and found the kink period consistent with previous studies., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. We report the time series analysis of TESS light curves of three blazars, BL Lacertae, 1RXS J111741.0+254858, and 1RXS J004519.6+212735, obtained using a customized approach for extracting AGN light curves. We find tentative evidence for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in these light curves that range from 2 to 6 days. Two methods of analysis are used for assessing their significance: generalized Lomb-Scargle periodograms and weighted wavelet Z-transforms. The different approaches of these methods together ensure a robust measurement of the significance of the claimed periodicities. We can attribute the apparent QPOs to the kink instability model which postulates that the observed QPOs are related to the temporal growth of kinks in the magnetized relativistic jet. We confirm the application of this model to BL Lacertae and extend the kink instability model to the other two BL Lac objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an extensive recent multi-band optical photometric observations of the blazar S5 0716+714 carried out over 53 nights with two telescopes in India, two in Bulgaria, one in Serbia, and one in Egypt during 2019 November -- 2022 December. We collected 1401, 689, 14726, and 165 photometric image frames in B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. We montiored the blazar quasi-simultaneously during 3 nights in B, V, R, and I bands; 4 nights in B, V, and R; 2 nights in V, R, and I; 5 nights in B and R; and 2 nights in V and R bands. We also took 37 nights of data only in R band. Single band data are used to study intraday flux variability and two or more bands quasi-simultaneous observations allow us to search for colour variation in the source. We employ the power-enhanced F-test and the nested ANOVA test to search for genuine flux and color variations in the light curves of the blazar on intraday timescales. Out of 12, 11, 53, and 5 nights observations, intraday variations with amplitudes between ~3% and ~20% are detected in 9, 8, 31 and 3 nights in B, V, R, and I bands, respectively, corresponding to duty cycles of 75%, 73%, 58% and 60%. These duty cycles are lower than those typically measured at earlier times. On these timescales color variations with both bluer-when-brighter and redder-when-brighter are seen, though nights with no measurable colour variation are also present. We present the results of our study of cross-correlations between long-term multi-band observations of the radio variability of the blazar 3C 279. More than a decade (2008-2022) of radio data were collected at seven different frequencies ranging from 2 GHz to 230 GHz. The multi-band radio light curves show variations in flux, with the prominent flare features appearing first at higher-frequency and later in lower-frequency bands. This behavior is quantified by cross-correlation analysis, which finds that the emission at lower-frequency bands lags that at higher-frequency bands. Lag versus frequency plots are well fit by straight lines with negative slope, typically ~-30 day/GHz. We discuss these flux variations in conjunction with the evolution of bright moving knots seen in multi-epoch VLBA maps to suggest possible physical changes in the jet that can explain the observational results. Some of the variations are consistent with the predictions of shock models, while others are better explained by a changing Doppler beaming factor as the knot trajectory bends slightly, given a small viewing angle to the jet., Comment: Submitted revised version to MNRAS journal, 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

We study the optical flux and polarization variability of the binary black hole blazar OJ 287 using quasi-simultaneous observations from 2015 to 2023 carried out using telescopes in the USA, Japan, Russia, Crimea, and Bulgaria. This is one of the most extensive quasi-simultaneous optical flux and polarization variability studies of OJ 287. OJ 287 showed large amplitude, ~3.0 mag flux variability, large changes of ~37% in degree of polarization, and a large swing of ~215 degrees in the angle of the electric vector of polarization. During the period of observation, several flares in flux were detected. Those flares are correlated with a rapid increase in the degree of polarization and swings in electric vector of polarization angle. A peculiar behavior of anticorrelation between flux and polarization degree, accompanied by a nearly constant polarization angle, was detected from JD 2,458,156 to JD 2,458,292. We have analyzed the optical light curves of the blazar OJ 287 obtained with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) over about 80 days from 2021 October 13 to December 31, with an unprecedented sampling of 2 minutes. Although significant variability has been found during the entire period, we have detected two exceptional flares with flux nearly doubling and then nearly tripling over 2 days in the middle of 2021 November. We went through the light curves analysis using the excess variance, generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram, and Continuous Auto-Regressive Moving Average (CARMA) methods, and estimated the flux halving/doubling timescales. The most probable shortest variability timescale was found to be 0.38 days in the rising phase of the first flare. We briefly discuss some emission models for the variability in radio-loud active galactic nuclei that could be capable of producing such fast flares., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We report the first extensive optical flux and spectral variability study of the TeV blazar TXS 0506+056 on intra-night to long-term timescales using BVRI data collected over 220 nights between January 21, 2017 to April 9, 2022 using 8 optical ground-based telescopes. In our search for intraday variability (IDV), we have employed two statistical analysis techniques, the nested ANOVA test and the power enhanced F-test. We found the source was variable in 8 nights out of 35 in the R-band and in 2 of 14 in the V-band yielding Duty Cycles (DC) of 22.8% and 14.3%, respectively. Clear colour variation in V - R was seen in only 1 out of 14 observing nights, but no IDV was found in the more limited B, I, and B - I data. During our monitoring period the source showed a 1.18 mag variation in the R-band and similar variations are clearly seen at all optical wavelengths. We extracted the optical (BVRI) SEDs of the blazar for 44 nights when observations were carried out in all four of those wavebands. Aims. We aim to investigate the extreme variability properties of the TeV blazar S4 0954+65 using optical photometric and polarisation observations carried out between 2017 and 2023 using three ground-based telescopes. Methods. We examined an extensive dataset comprised of 138 intraday (observing duration shorter than a day) light curves (LCs) of S4 0954+65 for flux, spectral, and polarisation variations on diverse timescales. For the variable LCs, we computed the minimum variability timescales. We investigated flux-flux correlations and colour variations to look for spectral variations on long (several weeks to years) timescales. Additionally, we looked for connections between optical R-band flux and polarisation degree. Results. We found significant variations in 59 out of 138 intraday LCs. We detected a maximum change of 0.58$\pm$0.11 in V-band magnitude within $\sim$2.64 h and a corresponding minimum variability timescale of 18.21$\pm$4.87 mins on 2017 March 25. During the course of our observing campaign, the source brightness changed by $\sim$4 magnitudes in V and R bands; however, we did not find any strong spectral variations. The slope of the relative spectral energy distribution was 1.37$\pm$0.04. The degree of polarisation varied from $\sim$ 3% to 39% during our monitoring. We observed a change of $\sim$120 degrees in polarisation angle (PA) within $\sim$3 h on 2022 April 13. No clear correlation was found between optical flux and the degree of polarisation. Conclusions. The results of our optical flux, colour, and polarisation study provide hints that turbulence in the relativistic jet could be responsible for the intraday optical variations in the blazar S4 0954+65. Transition blazars exhibit a shift from one subclass to the next during different flux states. It is therefore crucial to study them to understand the underlying physics of blazars. We probe the origin of the multi-wavelength emission from the transition blazar B2 1308+326 using 14-year-long gamma-ray light curve from Fermi and the quasi-simultaneous data from Swift. We used the Bayesian block algorithm to identify epochs of flaring and quiescent flux states and modelled the broadband SEDs for these epochs. We employed the one-zone leptonic model in which the synchrotron emission causes the low-energy part of the SED and the high-energy part is produced by the IC emission of external seed photons. We also investigated its multi-band variability properties and gamma-ray flux distribution, and the correlation between optical and gamma-ray emissions. We observed a historically bright flare from B2 1308+326 across the optical to gamma-ray bands in June and July 2022. The highest daily averaged gamma-ray flux was (14.24$\pm$2.36) $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and was detected on 1 July 2022. The gamma-ray flux distribution was found to be log-normal. The optical and gamma-ray emissions are well correlated with zero time lag. The synchrotron peak frequency changes from $\sim 8 \times$ 10$^{12}$ Hz (in the quiescent state) to $\sim 6 \times$ 10$^{14}$ Hz (in the flaring state), together with a decrease in the Compton dominance providing a hint that the source transitions from a LSP to an ISP. The SEDs for these two states are well-fitted by one-zone leptonic models. The parameters in the model fits are essentially consistent between both SEDs, except for the Doppler-beaming factor, which changes from $\sim$15.6 to $\sim$27 during the transition. We perform correlation and periodicity search analyses on long-term multi-band light curves of the FSRQ 1510-089 observed by the space-based Fermi--Large Area Telescope in gamma-rays, the SMARTS and Steward Observatory telescopes in optical and near-infrared (NIR) and the 13.7 m radio telescope in Metsahovi Radio Observatory between 2008 and 2018. The z-transform discrete correlation function method is applied to study the correlation and possible time lags among these multi band light curves. Among all pairs of wavelengths, the gamma-ray vs. optical/NIR and optical vs. NIR correlations show zero time lags; however, both the gamma-ray and optical/NIR emissions precede the radio radiation. The Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, and REDFIT techniques are employed to investigate the unresolved-core-emission dominated 37 GHz light curve and yield evidence for a quasi-period around 1540 days, although given the length of the whole data set it cannot be claimed to be significant. We present second observations by K2 of OJ~287 and 7 other $\gamma$-ray AGNs obtained in 2017-2018, second and third observations of the lobe-dominated, steep spectrum quasar 3C~207, and observations of 9 additional blazars not previously observed with K2. The AGN were observed simultaneously with K2 and the Fermi Large Area Telescope for 51-81 days. Our full sample, observed in 2014-2018, contained 16 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), 9 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs), and 4 other $\gamma$-ray AGNs. Twelve BL Lacs and 7 FSRQs exhibited fast, jagged light curves while 4 BL Lacs and 2 FSRQs had slow, smooth light curves. Some objects changed their red-noise character significantly between repeated K2 observations. The optical characteristics of OJ~287 derived from the short-cadence K2 light curves changed between observations made before and after the predicted passage of the suspected secondary supermassive black hole through the accretion disk of the primary supermassive black hole. The average slopes of the periodogram power spectral densities of the BL Lacs' and FSRQs' light curves differed significantly, by $\approx 12$\%, with the BL Lac slopes being steeper, and a KS test with a $p$-value of 0.039 indicates that these samples probably come from different populations; however, this result is not as strongly supported by PSRESP analyses. Differences in the origin of the jets from the ergosphere or accretion disk in these two classes could produce such a disparity, as could different sizes or locations of emission regions within the jets., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures. A small subset of extragalactic double radio sources, termed HYMORS (HYbrid MOrpholgy Radio Sources), is distinguished by a very unusual, hybrid morphology in terms of the Fanaroff-Riley (FR) classification. In HYMORS, one radio lobe appears edge-darkened (FR I), while the other shows a well-defined emission peak near its outer edge (edge-brightened, FR II). Such sources are rare but critical for constraining the mechanism responsible for the FR dichotomy, a widely debated issue in extragalactic astrophysics. Here we highlight the need for caution in assigning FR type, in view of some upcoming observational campaigns to confirm HYMORS among the candidates. To illustrate this we highlight the cases of 3 radio sources which have been perceived to be HYMORS, including the radio galaxy 0500+630 (4C +63.07) which has been claimed to be a good, original example of a HYMORS, with a FR I western lobe and a FR II eastern lobe marked by a prominent terminal hot spot. However, its recent VLASS map at 3 GHz has revealed that the western lobe actually extends much farther out than reported and terminates in a well-defined emission peak. This implies that the source is a regular FR II radio galaxy and not a HYMORS. We also provide a brief perspective of the HYMORS phenomenon and underscore the need to confirm a FR I classification by ruling out additional FR II characteristics, such as an inward lobe-widening and spectral steepening, as well as a lack of prominent radio jet within the lobe., Comment: 9 Pages, 2 Figures, Accepted For Publication in JAA

We present a long-term and intraday variability study on optical multiwaveband ($U\!BV\!RI$) data from the blazar AO 0235+164 collected by various telescopes for $\sim$44 years (1975--2019). The blazar was found to be significantly variable over the years in all wavebands with a variation of about six magnitudes between its low and active states. The variations in the different wavebands are highly correlated without any time lag. We did not observe any significant trend in color variation with time, but we observed a bluer-when-brighter trend between the $B-I$ color index and the $R$-magnitude. Optical $BV\!R$-band spectral energy distributions always show a convex shape. Significant intraday variability was frequently seen in the quasi-simultaneous observations of AO\,0235+164 made on 22 nights in $R$ and $V$-bands by the CASLEO and CAHA telescopes during 1999--2019. We also estimated the central supermassive black-hole mass of $7.9\times10^7 M_{\odot}$ by analyzing the broad Mg II emission line in AO 0235+164's spectrum. We report the flux and spectral variability of PG 1553+113 on intra-night (IDV) to short-term timescales using BVRI data collected over 91 nights from 28 February to 8 November 2019 employing ten optical telescopes: three in Bulgaria, two each in India and Serbia, and one each in Greece, Georgia, and Latvia. We monitored the blazar quasi-simultaneously for 16 nights in the V and R bands and 8 nights in the V, R, I bands and examined the light curves (LCs) for intra-day flux and colour variations using two powerful tests: the power-enhanced F-test and the nested ANOVA test. The source was found to be significantly (> 99%) variable in 4 nights out of 27 in R-band, 1 out of 16 in V-band, and 1 out of 6 nights in I-band. No temporal variations in the colours were observed on IDV timescale. During the course of these observations the total variation in R-band was 0.89 mag observed. We also investigated the spectral energy distribution (SED) using B, V, R, and I band data. We found optical spectral indices in the range of 0.878+-0.029 to 1.106+-0.065 by fitting a power law to these SEDs of PG 1553+113. We found that the source follows a bluer-when-brighter trend on IDV timescales. We report the detection of several quasi-periodicities around 0.6--2.5 days in the optical emission of the blazar S4 0954+658. The source was observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in six sectors and it showed these features in all but one of them, with a QPO of 1.52 days apparently present in portions of four of them. We used the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram method to search for significant signals and we confirmed them using a weighted wavelet transform for time-frequency domain analyses. We discuss several possible explanations for these rapid quasi-periodic variations and suggest that an origin in the innermost part of the accretion disk is most likely. We investigate the possible presence of quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) signals in 2103 blazars from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) time-domain survey. We detect a low-frequency QPO signal in five blazars observed over these 3.8-year-long optical r-band ZTF light curves. These periods range from 144 days to 196 days detected at $\gtrsim 4\sigma$ significance levels in both the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform analyses. We find consistent results using the phase dispersion minimization technique. A similar peak is detected in the g-band light curves at a slightly lower significance of 3$\sigma$. Such nearly periodic signals on these timescales in optical wavebands most likely originate from a precessing jet with high Lorentz factor, closely aligned to the observer's line of sight or the movement of plasma blobs along a helical structure in the jet., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 15 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

We present an extensive study on the X-ray intraday variability of ten TeV-emitting high synchrotron peaked blazars (HBLs): 1ES 0229+200, 1ES 0414+009, PKS 0548-322, 1ES 1101-232, 1H 1219+301, H 1426+428, Mrk 501, 1ES 1959+650, PKS 2005-489, and 1ES 2344+514 made with twenty-five XMM-Newton pointed observations during its operational period. Intraday variability has been estimated in three energy bands: soft (0.3--2 keV), hard (2--10 keV) and total (0.3--10 keV). Although seven out of these ten TeV HBLs exhibited some intraday variability at three-sigma levels no major variations exceeding six percent were detected. We explored the spectral properties of the sample by extracting the hardness ratio from the soft and hard bands; no significant variations in the hardness ratio were observed in any source. We performed power spectral density analyses on the variable light-curves by fitting power-laws, yielding slopes lying in the range from 1.11 to 2.93 for different HBLs. We report observations of a bright dumb-bell system of galaxies ($z =0.162$) with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope ($u$GMRT), which show that each member of this gravitationally bound pair of galaxies hosts bipolar radio jets extended on 100 kiloparsec scales. Only two cases of such radio morphology have been reported previously, both being dumb-bell systems, as well. The famous first example, 3C 75, was discovered 4 decades ago, and the second case was discovered 3 decades ago. This implies that such `Twin-Radio-Galaxies' (TRGs) are an exceedingly rare phenomenon. As in the case of its two senior cousins, the bi-polar radio jets of the present TRG (J104454+354055) exhibit strong wiggles and are edge-darkened (Fanaroff-Riley class I). However, there are important differences, too. For instance, the jets in the present TRG do not merge and, moreover, show no signs of distortion due to an external crosswind. This makes the present TRG a much neater laboratory for studying the physics of (sideway) colliding jets of relativistic plasma. We present the most extensive and well-sampled long-term multi-band near-infrared (NIR) temporal and spectral variability study of OJ 287, considered to be the best candidate binary supermassive black hole blazar. These observations were made between December 2007 and November 2021. The source underwent ~ 2 -- 2.5 magnitude variations in the J, H, and Ks NIR bands. Over these long-term timescales there were no systematic trends in either flux or spectral evolution with time or with the source's flux states. However, on shorter timescales, there are significant variations in flux and spectra indicative of strong changes during different activity states. The NIR spectral energy distributions show diverse facets at each flux state, from the lowest to the highest. The spectra are, in general, consistent with a power-law spectral profile (within 10%) and many of them indicate minor changes (observationally insignificant) in the shift of the peak. The NIR spectra generally steepens during bright phases. We briefly discuss these behaviors in the context of blazar emission scenarios/mechanisms, OJ 287's well-known traditional behavior, and implications for models of the source central engine invoked for its long-term optical semi-periodic variations., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables. We present a long term optical $R$ band light curve analysis of the gravitationally lensed blazar AO 0235+164 in the time span 1982 - 2019. Several methods of analysis lead to the result that there is a periodicity of ~8.13 years present in these data. In addition, each of these five major flares are apparently double-peaked, with the secondary peak following the primary one by ~2 years. Along with the well known system, OJ 287, our finding constitutes one of the most secure cases of long term quasi-periodic optical behaviour in a blazar ever found. We present periodicity search analyses on the $\gamma$-ray lightcurve of the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089 observed by the \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope. We report the detection of two transient quasi-periodic oscillations: a 3.6-day QPO during the outburst in 2009 that lasted five cycles (MJD 54906--54923); and a periodicity of 92 days spanning over 650 days from 2018 to 2020 (MJD 58200--58850), which lasted for seven cycles. We employed the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, REDFIT, and the Monte Carlo lightcurve simulation techniques to find any periodicity and the corresponding significance. The 3.6-day QPO was detected at a moderate significance of $\sim$3.5$\sigma$, while the detection significance of the 92-day QPO was $\sim$7.0$\sigma$. We explore a few physical models for such transient QPOs including a binary black hole system, precession of the jet, a non-axisymmetric instability rotating around the central black hole near the innermost stable circular orbit, the presence of quasi-equidistant magnetic islands inside the jet, and a geometric model involving a plasma blob moving helically inside a curved jet., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present the results of variability power spectral density (PSD) analysis using multiwavelength radio to GeV\,$\gamma$-ray light curves covering decades/years to days/minutes timescales for the blazars 3C 279 and PKS 1510-089. The PSDs are modeled as single power-laws, and the best-fit spectral shape is derived using the `power spectral response' method. With more than ten years of data obtained with weekly/daily sampling intervals, most of the PSDs cover ~2-4 decades in temporal frequency; moreover, in the optical band, the PSDs cover ~6 decades for 3C 279 due to the availability of intranight light curves. Our main results are the following: (1) on timescales ranging from decades to days, the synchrotron and the inverse Compton spectral components, in general, exhibit red-noise (slope ~2) and flicker-noise (slope ~1) type variability, respectively; (2) the slopes of $\gamma$-ray variability PSDs obtained using a 3-hr integration bin and a 3-weeks total duration exhibit a range between ~1.4 and ~2.0 (mean slope = 1.60$\pm$0.70), consistent within errors with the slope on longer timescales; (3) comparisons of fractional variability indicate more power on timescales $\leq$100\, days at $\gamma$-ray frequencies as compared to longer wavelengths, in general (except between $\gamma$-ray and optical frequencies for PKS 1510$-$089); (4) the normalization of intranight optical PSDs for 3C\,279 appears to be a simple extrapolation from longer timescales, indicating a continuous (single) process driving the variability at optical wavelengths; (5) the emission at optical/infrared wavelengths may involve a combination of disk and jet processes for PKS\,1510$-$089., Comment: ApJ accepted. The nearby Seyfert type galaxy NGC 1275 contains a bright radio nucleus at its center, revealed through high-spatial resolution imaging to be the source of the jets emanating from the galaxy. Coincident with the emergence of a new component C3 in the nucleus since 2005, flux densities from NGC 1275, at least at radio, millimeter (mm), and gamma-ray frequencies, had been increasing up through 2017 and leveled off afterwards. We analyze the long-term light curves of the nucleus that span the rising trend to 2015 July, and find a pair of approximately year-long quasi-periodic oscillations, with periods of $P_l\simeq 345$\,d and $P_h\simeq 386$\,d respectively, in emission at 1.3-mm wavelength. We discuss the case that there would be a long precession period $P_{\rm prec}\simeq 9$\,yr, causing the appearance of $P_h$ that is slightly higher than $P_l$. The accretion disk around the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) would be precessing at $P_{\rm prec}$, induced by either the Lense-Thirring effect or the existence of a companion SMBH. In the two scenarios, $P_l$ would be the jet wobbling timescale or the SMBH binary period respectively. The finding, which could be verified through high-spatial resolution mm imaging, would not only identify the nature of the jet variation but also help reveal the full features of the galaxy., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present X-ray intraday variability and power spectral density (PSD) analyses of the longest 23 pointed XMM-Newton observations of the blazar 3C 273 that were taken during 2000 -- 2021. These good time intervals contained between 5 and 24.6 hours of data. Variability has been estimated in three energy bands: 0.2 -- 2 keV (soft), 2 -- 10 keV (hard), and 0.2 -- 10 keV (total). Nine of the 23 observations exhibited some variability, though no major variations exceeding 5 per cent were detected. Typical timescales for variability were $\sim 1$ ks. For those variable light curves we find that a power-law model provides good fits to each PSD, with most of the slopes between $-1.7$ and $-2.8$. Although no variations of hardness ratio could be measured in any individual observation, an anti-correlation in flux and hardness ratio is found in long term data that indicates a harder when brighter trend. We present variability analyses of twenty pointed XMM-Newton observations of the high energy peaked TeV blazar PG 1553+113 taken during 2010 to 2018. We found intraday variability in the total X-ray energy range (0.3 -- 10 keV) in 16 out of 19 light curves or a duty cycle of ~84%. A discrete correlation function analysis of the intraday light curves in the soft and hard X-ray bands peaks on zero lag, showing that the emission in hard and soft bands are co-spatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. Red-noise dominates the power spectral density (PSD) of all the LCs although the PSDs have a range of spectral slopes from -2.36 to -0.14. On longer timescales, the optical and UV variability patterns look almost identical and well correlated, as are the soft and hard X-ray bands, but the optical/UV variations are not correlated to those in the X-ray band, indicating that the optical/UV and X-ray emissions are emitted by two different populations of leptons. We have examined 13 pointed observations of the TeV emitting high synchrotron peak blazar PKS 2155-304, taken by the Suzaku satellite throughout its operational period. We found that the blazar showed large-amplitude intraday variabilities in the soft (0.8 - 1.5 keV) and the hard (1.5 - 8.0 keV) bands in the light curves. Spectral variability on intraday timescales is estimated using the hardness ratio. The blazar usually becomes harder when brighter and vice versa, following the typical behavior of high synchrotron peak blazars. The power spectral density (PSD) analyses of 11 out of 13 light curves in the total energy (0.8 - 8.0 keV) are found to be red-noise dominated, with power-law spectral indices that span a large range, from -2.81 to -0.88. Discrete correlation function analyses of all the 13 light curves between the soft and the hard bands show that they are well correlated and peak at, or very close to, zero lag. This indicates that the emissions in soft and hard bands are probably cospatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. Considering fluxes versus variability timescales, we found no correlation on intraday timescales, implying that X-ray emission from PKS 2155-304 is not dominated by simple changes in the Doppler factor. We present time series analyses of three-decade long radio observations of the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+164 made at the University of Michigan Radio Astronomical Observatory operating at three central frequencies of 4.8 GHz, 8.0 GHz and 14.5 GHz. We detected a quasi-periodic oscillation of $\sim$965 days in all three frequency bands in the light curve of the effectively simultaneous observations, along with strong signals at $\sim$1950 d, $\sim$1350 d, and $\sim$660 d. The periodicity is analyzed with three methods: Data Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform, Generalized Lomb-Scargle Periodogram and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform. These methods are chosen as they have different analysis approaches toward robust measurement of claimed periodicities. The QPO at $965\pm 50$ days is found to be significant (at least $3.5\sigma$) and is persistent throughout the observation for all three radio frequencies, and the others, which may be harmonics, are comparably significant in at least the 8.0 GHz and 14.5 GHz bands. Quasi-periodic fluctuations in the light curves of blazars can provide insight into the underlying emission process. This type of flux modulation hints at periodic physical processes that result in emission. CTA 102, a flat spectrum radio quasar at $z=1.032$, has displayed significant activity since 2016. The multi-waveband light curve of CTA 102 shows signs of quasi-periodic oscillations during the 2016-2017 flare. Our goal is to quantify the presence of any periodicity in the emitted flux during the mentioned period and to explore the causes that can give rise to it. Techniques such as the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and weighted wavelet z-transform were employed to observe the power emitted at different frequencies. To quantify the significance of the dominant period, Monte-Carlo techniques were employed considering an underlying smooth bending power-law model for the power spectrum. In addition, the light curve was modeled using an autoregressive process to analytically obtain the significance of the dominant period. Lastly, the light curve was modeled using a generalized autoregressive integrated moving average process to check whether introducing a periodic component results in a statistically preferable model. Significant, simultaneous quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were observed in the $\gamma$-ray and optical fluxes of blazar CTA 102 during its 2016-2017 flare. The periodic flux modulation had a dominant period of $\sim$ 7.6 days and lasted for $\sim$ 8 cycles (MJD 57710-57770). All of the methods used point toward significant ($>4\sigma$) quasi-periodic modulation in both $\gamma$-ray and optical fluxes. Several possible models were explored while probing the origin of the periodicity, and by extension, the 2016--2017 optical flare. We report the detection of a probable $\gamma$-ray quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of around 314 days in the monthly binned 0.1 -- 300 GeV $\gamma$-ray {\it Fermi}-LAT light curve of the well known BL Lac blazar OJ 287. To identify and quantify the QPO nature of the $\gamma$-ray light curve of OJ 287, we used the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP), REDFIT, and weighted wavelet z-transform (WWZ) analyses. We briefly discuss possible emission models for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) that can explain a $\gamma$-ray QPO of such a period in a blazar. Reports of changes in the position of quasi-stationary radio knots over a yearly timescale as well as a strong correlation between gamma-ray and mm-radio emission in previous studies indicate that the signal is probably associated with these knots., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, in press (MNRAS)

We present the results of optical photometric observations of three extreme TeV blazars, 1ES 0229$+$200, 1ES 0414$+$009, and 1ES 2344$+$514, taken with two telescopes (1.3 m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope, and 1.04 m Sampuranand Telescope) in India and two (1.4 m Milankovi\'{c} telescope and 60 cm Nedeljkovi\'{c} telescope) in Serbia during 2013--2019. We investigated their flux and spectral variability on diverse timescales. We examined a total of 36 intraday $R-$band light curves of these blazars for flux variations using the power-enhanced {\it F}-test and the nested ANOVA test. No significant intraday variation was detected on 35 nights, and during the one positive detection the amplitude of variability was only 2.26 per cent. On yearly timescales, all three blazars showed clear flux variations in all optical wavebands. The weighted mean optical spectral index ($\alpha_{BR}$), calculated using $B - R$ color indices, for 1ES 0229$+$200 was 2.09 $\pm$ 0.01. We also estimated the weighted mean optical spectral indices of 0.67 $\pm$ 0.01 and 1.37 $\pm$ 0.01 for 1ES 0414$+$009, and 1ES 2344$+$514, respectively, by fitting a single power-law ($F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$) in their optical ({\it VRI}) spectral energy distributions. A bluer-when-brighter trend was only detected in the blazar 1ES 0414$+$009. We report the detection ($>4\sigma$) of a Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) in the $\gamma$-ray light curve of 3C 454.3 along with a simultaneous marginal QPO detection ($>2.4\sigma$) in the optical light curves. Periodic flux modulations were detected in both of these wavebands with a dominant period of $\sim 47$ days. The $\gamma$-ray QPO lasted for over 450 days (from MJD 56800 to 57250) resulting in over nine observed cycles which is among the highest number of periods ever detected in a blazar light curve. The optical light curve was not well sampled for almost half of the $\gamma$-ray QPO span due to the daytime transit of the source, which could explain the lower significance of the optical QPO. Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) modelling of the light curve revealed a significant, exponentially decaying, trend in the light curve during the QPO, along with the $47$ days periodicity. We explore several physical models to explain the origin of this transient quasi-periodic modulation and the overall trend in the observed flux with a month-like period. These scenarios include a binary black hole system, a hotspot orbiting close to the innermost stable circular orbit of the supermassive black hole, and precessing jets. We conclude that the most likely scenario involves a region of enhanced emission moving helically inside a curved jet. The helical motion gives rise to the QPO and the curvature ($\sim 0.05^{\circ}$ pc$^{-1}$) of the jet is responsible for the observed trend in the light curve., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

We report the results of our optical (VRI) photometric observations of the TeV blazar 1ES 0806$+$524 on 153 nights during 2011-2019 using seven optical telescopes in Europe and Asia. We investigated the variability of the blazar on intraday as well as on long-term timescales. We examined eighteen intraday light curves for flux and color variations using the most reliable power-enhanced F-test and the nested ANOVA test. Only on one night was a small, but significant, variation found, in both $V$ band and $R$ band light curves. The $V-R$ color index was constant on every one of those nights. Flux density changes of around 80 % were seen over the course of these eight years in multiple bands. We found a weighted mean optical spectral index of 0.639$\pm$0.002 during our monitoring period by fitting a power law ($F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$) in 23 optical ($VRI$) spectral energy distributions of 1ES 0806$+$524. We present the results of flux density, spectral index, and polarization intra-night monitoring studies of a sample of eight optically bright blazars, carried out by employing several small to moderate aperture (0.4\,m to 1.5\,m diameter) telescopes fitted with CCDs and polarimeters located in Europe, India, and Japan. The duty cycle of flux variability for the targets is found to be $\sim 45$ percent, similar to that reported in earlier studies. The computed two-point spectral indices are found to be between 0.65 to 1.87 for our sample, comprised of low- and intermediate frequency peaked blazars, with one exception; they are also found to be statistically variable for about half the instances where `confirmed' variability is detected in flux density. In the analysis of the spectral evolution of the targets on hourly timescale, a counter-clockwise loop (soft-lagging) is noted in the flux-spectral index plane on two occasions, and in one case a clear spectral flattening with the decreasing flux is observed. In our data set, we also observe a variety of flux-polarization degree variability patterns, including instances with a relatively straightforward anti-correlation, correlation, or counter-clockwise looping. These changes are typically reflected in the flux-polarization angle plane: the anti-correlation between the flux and polarization degree is accompanied by an anti-correlation between the polarization angle and flux, while the counter-clockwise flux-PD looping behaviour is accompanied by a clockwise looping in the flux-polarization angle representation. In order to find clues to the origin of the "winged" or "X-shaped" radio galaxies (XRGs) we investigate here the parent galaxies of a large sample of 106 XRGs for optical-radio axes alignment, interstellar medium, black hole mass, and large-scale environment. For 41 of the XRGs it was possible to determine the optical major axis and the primary radio axis and the strong tendency for the two axes to be fairly close is confirmed. However, several counter-examples were also found and these could challenge the widely discussed backflow diversion model for the origin of the radio wings. Comparison with a well-defined large sample of normal FR II radio galaxies has revealed that: (i) XRGs possess slightly less massive central black holes than the normal radio galaxies (average masses being log$M_{\rm BH} \sim$ 8.81 $M_{\odot}$ and 9.07 $M_{\odot}$, respectively); (ii) a much higher fraction of XRGs ($\sim$ 80%) exhibits red mid-IR colors ($W2 - W3 > 1.5$), indicating a population of young stars and/or an enhanced dust mass, probably due to relatively recent galaxy merger(s). A comparison of the large-scale environment (i.e., within $\sim$ 1 Mpc) shows that both XRGs and FRII radio galaxies inhabit similarly poor galaxy clustering environments (medium richness being 8.94 and 11.87, respectively). We performed a long-term optical (B, V, R bands), infra-red (J and K bands) and radio band (15, 22, 37 GHz band) study on the flat spectrum radio quasar, 3C 454.3, using the data collected over a period of more than 8 years (MJD 54500--57500). The temporal variability, spectral properties and inter-waveband correlations were studied by dividing the available data into smaller segments with more regular sampling. This helped us constrain the size and the relative locations of the emission regions for different wavebands. Spectral analysis of the source revealed the interplay between the accretion disk and jet emission. The source predominantly showed a redder-when-brighter trend, though we observed a bluer-when-brighter trend at high flux levels which could be signatures of particle acceleration and radiative cooling. Significant correlations with near-zero lag were seen between various optical/infra-red bands, indicating that these emission regions are co-spatial. Correlations with a time lag of about 10--100 days are seen between optical/infra-red and radio bands indicating these emissions arise from different regions. We also observe the DCF peak lag change from year to year. We try to explain these differences using a curved jet model where the different emission regions have different viewing angles resulting in a frequency dependent Doppler factor. This variable Doppler factor model explains the variability timescales and the variation in DCF peak lag between the radio and optical emissions in different segments. We present X-ray flux and spectral analyses of the three pointed Suzaku observations of the TeV high synchrotron peak blazar Mrk 421 taken throughout its complete operational duration. The observation taken on 5 May 2008 is, at 364.6 kiloseconds (i.e., 101.3 hours), the longest and most evenly sampled continuous observation of this source, or any blazar, in the X-ray energy 0.8 - 60 keV until now. We found large amplitude intra-day variability in all soft and hard bands in all the light curves. The discrete correction function analysis of the light curves in soft and hard bands peaks on zero lag, showing that the emission in hard and soft bands are cospatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. The hardness ratio plots imply that the source is more variable in the harder bands compared to the softer bands. The source is harder-when-brighter, following the general behavior of high synchrotron peak blazars. Power spectral densities of all three light curves are red noise dominated, with a range of power spectra slopes. If one assumes that the emission originates very close to the central super massive black hole, a crude estimate for its mass, of ~ 4 * 10^{8} M_{\odot}, can be made; but if the variability is due to perturbations arising there that are advected into the jet and are thus Doppler boosted, substantially higher masses are consistent with the quickest seen variations. We present a detailed spectral and temporal study of the intermediate-type blazar ON 231 during the TeV outburst phase in 2008 June with observations performed by Swift and XMM-Newton. The X-ray flux of the source, which was significantly dominated by the soft photons (below $3-4$ keV), varies between 27$\%$ and 38$\%$ on day timescales, while mild variations were observed in the optical/UV emissions. We found a maximum soft lag of $\sim 1$ hr between the UV and soft X-ray bands, which can be understood if the magnetic field of the emitting region is $\sim 5.6~ \delta^{-1/3}$ G. The $0.6-10$ keV spectra can be well represented by a broken power-law model, which indicates the presence of both synchrotron and inverse Compton components in the studied X-ray regime. The synchrotron part of the SEDs constructed with simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray data follows a log-parabolic shape. A time-resolved spectral analysis shows that the break energy varies significantly between 2.4 and 7.3 keV with the changing flux state of the source, and the similar variations of the spectral slopes of the two components support the SSC scenario. The synchrotron tail, following a log-parabolic function, shows that the peak frequency ($\nu_{p}$) varies by two orders of magnitude ($\sim 10^{14}-10^{16}$ Hz) during the event. A significantly positive $E_{p}-\beta$ relation is observed from both SED and time-resolved spectral analyses. The most feasible scenario for the observed trend during the flaring event could be associated with a magnetic-field-driven stochastic process evolving toward an equilibrium energy level., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a catalog of 290 "winged" or X-shaped radio galaxies (XRGs) extracted from the latest (2014 December 17) data release of the "Very Large Array Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeter." We have combined these radio images with their counterparts in the TIFR GMRT sky survey at 150 MHz, in an attempt to identify any low surface brightness radio emission present in these sources. This has enabled us to assemble a sample of 106 "strong" XRG candidates and 184 "probable" XRG candidates whose XRG designation needs to be verified by further observations. The present sample of 290 XRG candidates is almost twice as large as the number of XRGs currently known. Twenty-five of our 290 XRG candidates (9 "strong" and 16 "probable") are identified as quasars. Double-peaked narrow emission lines are seen in the optical spectra of three of the XRG candidates (two "strong" and one "probable"). Nearly 90% of the sample is located in the FR II domain of the Owen-Ledlow diagram. A few of the strong XRG candidates have a rather flat radio spectrum (spectral index alpha flatter than -0.3) between 150 MHz and 1.4 GHz, or between 1.4 and 5 GHz. Since this is not expected for lobe-dominated extragalactic radio sources (like nearly all known XRGs), these sources are particularly suited for follow-up radio imaging and near-simultaneous measurement of the radio spectrum., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present and analyze the variability of three Seyfert galaxies on intra-day timescales. We have analyzed in a uniform manner the 38 longest ( $>30$ ks) observations made for NGC 4051, MCG$-06-30-15$ and NGC 4151 by XMM-Newton between 2000 and 2015. The nuclei were quite active during essentially all of these observations and the overall X-ray fluxes (0.3-10 keV) varied by an order of magnitude. Most of the observations do appear to show characteristic timescales, estimated through their auto-correlation functions, ranging between $\sim 2.9$ ks and $\sim 45.3$ ks. The hard (2-10 keV) and soft (0.3-02 keV) bands are very well correlated but consideration of their hardness ratios show that the sources typically soften during flares. We also provide new estimates of the central black hole masses for these three AGN that support the hypothesis that Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies have relatively small central black holes.

We present the results of photometric observations of three TeV blazars, 3C 66A, S5 0954+658 and BL Lacertae, during the period 2013--2017. Our extensive observations were performed in a total of 360 nights which produced $\sim$6820 image frames in BVRI bands. We study flux and spectral variability of these blazars on these lengthy timescales. We also examine the optical Spectral Energy Distributions of these blazars, which are crucial in understanding the emission mechanism of long-term variability in blazars. All three TeV blazars exhibited strong flux variability during our observations. The colour variations are mildly chromatic on long timescales for two of them. The nature of the long-term variability of 3C 66A and S5 0954+658 is consistent with a model of a non-thermal variable component that has a continuous injection of relativistic electrons with power law distributions around 4.3 and 4.6, respectively. However, the long-term flux and colour variability of BL Lac suggests that these can arise from modest changes in velocities or viewing angle toward the emission region, leading to variations in the Doppler boosting of the radiation by a factor ~1.2 over the period of these observations., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The latest flare of the regular $\sim$ 12 years quasi-periodic optical outbursts in the binary SMBH candidate system OJ 287 occurred in December 2015. Following this, the source has exhibited enhanced multi-wavelength (MW) variability in spectral, temporal and polarization domains with new features never seen before. Our MW investigation show that the overall MW variability can be divided into two-phase, (i) November 2015 -- May 2016 with variability from near-infrared (NIR) to Fermi-LAT $\rm \gamma$-ray energies (0.1 -- 300 GeV), and (ii) September 2016 -- July 2017 with intense NIR to X-ray variability but without any activity in the Fermi-LAT band, and the very first detection at very high energies (VHEs, E $>$ 100 GeV) by VERITAS. The broadband SEDs during the first phase show a thermal bump in the NIR-optical region and a hardening in the $\rm \gamma$-ray spectra with a shift in its peak. The thermal bump like feature is consistent with the description of the standard accretion-disk associated with the primary SMBH of mass $\sim 1.8\times10^{10} M_\odot$ while the $\rm \gamma$-ray emission can be naturally reproduced by inverse Compton scattering of photons from the broad line region which has been seen during the close encounter duration of the binary SMBHs, thereby suggesting a sub-parsec scale origin. The SEDs during the second phase (VHE detection) is a mixture of typical OJ 287 SED with hardened $\rm \gamma$-ray spectra and an HBL SED and can be explained in a two-zone model, one located at sub-parsec scales and other at parsec scales. During both the phases, the MW variability is simultaneous and almost always accompanied by changes in the polarization properties, exhibiting random and systematic variations, suggesting a strong role of magnetic field and turbulence., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Proceeding BHCB2018, accepted in PoS

We present the results of our optical (VRI) observations of the TeV blazar PG 1553+113 over eight nights in 2016 April. We monitored the blazar quasi-simultaneously in V and R bands each night and examined the light curves (LCs) for intraday flux and color variations using two of the most powerful tests; the power-enhanced F-test and the nested ANOVA test. The source was found to be significantly (> 99%) variable in both V and R bands only on April 13, while clear variations only in R band LCs were seen on April 8 and 12. No temporal variation was seen in the color during the observation period. We did not find any significant correlation between V-R color index and R magnitude on any observing night. We found a mean optical spectral index of $\sim 0.83 \pm 0.02 $ with a maximum variation of 0.21 by fitting a power law ($F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$) in the optical (VRI) spectral energy distribution of PG 1553+113. Since 2016 October, the active galaxy PKS 2247-131 has undergone a gamma-ray outburst, which we studied using data obtained with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The emission arises from a relativistic jet in PKS 2247-131, as an optical spectrum only shows a few weak absorption lines, typical of the BL Lacertae sub-class of the blazar class of active galactic nuclei. Here we report a ~34.5 day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the emission after the initial flux peak of the outburst. Compared to one-year time-scale QPOs, previously identified in blazars in Fermi energies, PKS 2247-131 exhibits the first clear case of a relatively short, month-like oscillation. We show that this QPO can be explained in terms of a helical structure in the jet, where the viewing angle to the dominant emission region in the jet undergoes periodic changes. We detected a possible quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of ~ 71 days in the 0.1 -- 300 GeV gamma-ray Fermi-LAT light curve of the high redshift flat spectrum radio quasar B2 1520+31. We identify and confirm that quasi-period by Lomb Scargle periodogram (LSP), and weighted wavelet z-transform (WWZ) analyses. Using this QPO period, and assuming it originates from accretion-disc fluctuations at the innermost stable circular orbit, we estimate the central supermassive black hole mass to range between ~ 5.4 * 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ for a non-rotating black hole and ~ 6.0 * 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ for a maximally rotating black hole.
