Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major air pollutant affecting human survival, development and health. By predicting the spatial distribution concentration of PM2.5, pollutant sources can be better traced, allowing measures to protect human health to be implemented. Thus, the purpose of this study is to predict and analyze the PM2.5 concentration of stations based on the integrated deep learning of a convolutional neural network long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) model. To solve the complexity and nonlinear characteristics of PM2.5 time series data problems, we adopted the CNN-LSTM deep learning model. We collected the PM2.5data of Qingdao in 2020 as well as meteorological factors such as temperature, wind speed and air pressure for pre-processing and characteristic analysis. Then, the CNN-LSTM deep learning model was integrated to capture the temporal and spatial features and trends in the data. The CNN layer was used to extract spatial features, while the LSTM layer was used to learn time dependencies. Through comparative experiments and model evaluation, we found that the CNN-LSTM model can achieve excellent PM2.5 prediction performance. The results show that the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.91, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is 8.216 µg/m3. The CNN-LSTM model achieves better prediction accuracy and generalizability compared with those of the CNN and LSTM models (R2 values of 0.85 and 0.83, respectively, and RMSE values of 11.356 and 14.367, respectively). Finally, we analyzed and explained the predicted results. We also found that some meteorological factors (such as air temperature, pressure, and wind speed) have significant effects on the PM2.5 concentration at ground stations in Qingdao. In summary, by using deep learning methods, we obtained better prediction performance and revealed the association between PM2.5 concentration and meteorological factors. These findings are of great significance for improving the quality of the atmospheric environment and protecting public health.

Abstract Preeclampsia (PE) is considered as a disease of placental origin. However, the specific mechanism of placental abnormalities remains elusive. This study identified thrombospondin‐1 (THBS1) is downregulated in preeclamptic placentae and negatively correlated with blood pressure. Functional studies show that THBS1 knockdown inhibits proliferation, migration, and invasion and increases the cycle arrest and apoptosis rate of HTR8/SVneo cells. Importantly, THBS1 silencing induces necroptosis in HTR8/SVneo cells, accompanied by the release of damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Necroptosis inhibitors necrostatin‐1 and GSK′872 restore the trophoblast survival while pan‐caspase inhibitor Z‐VAD‐FMK has no effect. Mechanistically, the results show that THBS1 interacts with transforming growth factor B‐activated kinase 1 (TAK1), which is a central modulator of necroptosis quiescence and affects its stability. Moreover, THBS1 silencing up‐regulates the expression of neuronal precursor cell‐expressed developmentally down‐regulated 4 (NEDD4), which acts as an E3 ligase of TAK1 and catalyzes K48‐linked ubiquitination of TAK1 in HTR8/SVneo cells. Besides, THBS1 attenuates PE phenotypes and improves the placental necroptosis in vivo. Taken together, the down‐regulation of THBS1 destabilizes TAK1 by activating NEDD4‐mediated, K48‐linked TAK1 ubiquitination and promotes necroptosis and DAMPs release in trophoblast cells, thus participating in the pathogenesis of PE.

Abstract Background Prenatal exposure to intrauterine inflammation (IUI) is a crucial event in preterm birth (PTB) pathophysiology, increasing the incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders. Gut microbiota and metabolite profile alterations have been reported to be involved in PTB pathophysiology. Method and results In this study, IUI-exposed PTB mouse model was established and verified by PTB rate and other perinatal adverse reactions; LPS-indued IUI significantly increased the rates of PTB, apoptosis and inflammation in placenta tissue samples. LPS-induced IUI caused no significant differences in species richness and evenness but significantly altered the species abundance distribution. Non-targeted metabolomics analysis indicated that the metabolite profile of the preterm mice was altered, and differential metabolites were associated with signaling pathways including pyruvate metabolism. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation between Parasutterella excrementihominis and S4572761 (Nb-p-coumaroyltryptamine) and Mreference-1264 (pyruvic acid), respectively, was observed. Lastly, pyruvic acid treatment partially improved LPS-induced IUI phenotypes and decreased PTB rates and decreased the apoptosis and inflammation in placenta tissue samples. Conclusion This study revealed an association among gut microbiota dysbiosis, metabolite profile alterations, and LPS-induced IUI and PTB in mice models. Our investigation revealed the possible involvement of gut microbiota in the pathophysiology of LPS-induced IUI and PTB, which might be mediated by metabolites such as pyruvic acid. Future studies should be conducted to verify the findings through larger sample-sized animal studies and clinical investigations.

The escalating threat of anthropogenic climate change has spurred an urgent quest for innovative CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) technologies. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as prominent candidates in CO2 capture and conversion due to their large specific surface area, well-defined porous structure, and tunable chemical properties. This review unveils the latest advancements in MOF-based materials specifically designed for superior CO2 adsorption, precise separation, advanced photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, progressive CO2 hydrogenation, and dual functionalities. We explore the strategies that enhance MOF efficiency and examine the challenges of and opportunities afforded by transitioning from laboratory research to industrial application. Looking ahead, this review offers a visionary perspective on harnessing MOFs for the sustainable capture and conversion of CO2.

The rural transformation driven by regime shift is obvious around the world, and there is still insufficient research exploring related effective analytical frameworks and ideas. Transformation adaptation is widely used in the field of disaster research as a concept of dynamic systems’ evolutionary development, emphasizing fundamental changes in the structure or function of systems and promoting equity and justice for communities in social–ecological systems. This paper critically reviews and synthesizes the literature on adaptation to construct an evaluation framework of transformative adaptation of social–ecological systems. This framework is applied to the analysis of the adaptive process, capacity, and outcomes of rural tourism transformation in different cases of Shaanxi Province, China. The results were as follows: (1) The shift of regime state in the process of rural transformation adaptation has diversified, while the tourism regime shift with active adaptation has better adaptive capacity and outcomes; (2) a strong community foundation and benefit-sharing tourism development model can promote adaptation in the rural system; and (3) social relationship networks, farmers’ collective interests and discourse power, and rural economic and material conditions are the key factors affecting the adaptation of rural tourism transformation. This study provides practical analytical tools and opportunities for improving adaptation of the rural tourism transformation at the global level.

Germ cells (GCs) serve as indispensable carriers in both animals and plants, ensuring genetic continuity across generations. While it is generally acknowledged that the timing of germline segregation differs significantly between animals and plants, ongoing debates persist as new evidence continues to emerge. In this review, we delve into studies focusing on male germ cell specifications in plants, and we summarize the core gene regulatory circuits in germ cell specification, which show remarkable parallels to those governing meristem homeostasis. The similarity in germline establishment between animals and plants is also discussed.

Aims: The pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles of voriconazole in intensive care unit (ICU) patients differ from that in other patients. We aimed to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) model to evaluate the effects of using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and those of various biological covariates on the voriconazole PK profile. Methods: Modeling analyses of the PK parameters were conducted using the nonlinear mixed-effects modeling method (NONMEM) with a two-compartment model. Monte Carlo simulations (MCSs) were performed to observe the probability of target attainment (PTA) when receiving CRRT or not under different dosage regimens, different stratifications of quick C-reactive protein (qCRP), and different minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges. Results: A total of 408 critically ill patients with 746 voriconazole concentration–time data points were included in this study. A two-compartment population PK model with qCRP, CRRT, creatinine clearance rate (CLCR), platelets (PLT), and prothrombin time (PT) as fixed effects was developed using the NONMEM. Conclusions: We found that qCRP, CRRT, CLCR, PLT, and PT affected the voriconazole clearance. The most commonly used clinical regimen of 200 mg q12h was sufficient for the most common sensitive pathogens (MIC ≤ 0.25 mg/L), regardless of whether CRRT was performed and the level of qCRP. Abstract Background Substantial studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress placenta and endothelial injury are considered to inextricably critical events in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE). Systemic inflammatory response and endothelial dysfunction are induced by the circulating factors released from oxidative stress placentae. As a novel biomarker of oxidative stress, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) levels are strongly correlated with PE characteristics. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanism underlying the effect of factors is still largely unknown. Methods With the exponential knowledge on the importance of placenta-derived extracellular vesicles (pEVs), we carried out lncRNA transcriptome profiling on small EVs (sEVs) secreted from AOPPs-treated trophoblast cells and identified upregulated lncRNA TDRKH-AS1 as a potentially causative factor for PE. We isolated and characterized sEVs from plasma and trophoblast cells by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and western blotting. The expression and correlation of lncRNA TDRKH-AS1 were evaluated using qRT-PCR in plasmatic sEVs and placentae from patients. Pregnant mice injected with TDRKH-AS1-riched trophoblast sEVs was performed to detect the TDRKH-AS1 function in vivo. To investigate the potential effect of sEVs-derived TDRKH-AS1 on endothelial function in vitro, transcriptome sequencing, scanning electron Microscopy (SEM), immunofluorescence, ELISA and western blotting were conducted in HUVECs. RNA pulldown, mass spectrometry, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), chromatin isolation by RNA purification (ChIRP) and coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP) were used to reveal the latent mechanism of TDRKH-AS1 on endothelial injury. Results The expression level of TDRKH-AS1 was significantly increased in plasmatic sEVs and placentae from patients, and elevated TDRKH-AS1 in plasmatic sEVs was positively correlated with clinical severity of the patients. Moreover, pregnant mice injected with TDRKH-AS1-riched trophoblast sEVs exhibited a hallmark feature of PE with increased blood pressure and systemic inflammatory responses. Pyroptosis, an inflammatory form of programmed cell death, is involved in the development of PE. Indeed, our in vitro study indicated that sEVs-derived TDRKH-AS1 secreted from AOPPs-induced trophoblast elevated DDIT4 expression levels to trigger inflammatory response of pyroptosis in endothelial cells through interacting with PDIA4. Conclusions Herein, results in the present study supported that TDRKH-AS1 in sEVs isolated from oxidative stress trophoblast may be implicated in the pathogenesis of PE via inducing pyroptosis and aggravating endothelial dysfunction.

Abstract Introduction Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication of cataract surgery. In this study, we develop a model to quantitatively predict the probability of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for vision-threatening PCO to improve the life quality of postoperative patients. Methods A registry analysis of cataract procedures performed between the years 2010 and 2021. Following the screening of 16,802 patients (25,883 eyes), 9768 patients (eyes) were enrolled. The cohort was randomly divided into two groups: training (n = 6838) and validation (n = 2930). To identify relevant risk factors, univariate, multivariate, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) algorithm Cox regression analysis were employed, and a nomogram was created to demonstrate the prediction result. Results At 5 years, the overall cumulative incidence of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was 12.0% (1169/9768). The following variables were included in the prediction model: sex [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.53, 95% CI 1.32–1.76], age (HR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.56–0.88), intraocular lens (IOL) material (HR = 2.65, 95% CI 2.17–3.24), high myopia (HR = 2.28, 95% CI 1.90–2.75), and fibrinogen (HR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.72–0.88). In the validation cohort, the area under the curve (AUC) of 1-, 3-, and 5-year predictions for Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy were 0.702, 0.691, and 0.688, respectively. For a subgroup of patients with high myopia, the protective effect of hydrophobic IOL disappeared (HR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.51–1.12, P = 0.127). Conclusion This model could predict the probability of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for vision-threatening PCO after cataract surgery by taking into account factors such as age, gender, IOL material, high myopia, and fibrinogen. Meanwhile, implantation of a hydrophobic IOL in individuals with high myopia did not demonstrate a protective impact against vision-threatening PCO.

Background: Due to media opacity, it is usually difficult to accurately evaluate the postoperative visual acuity in cataracts patients. As a small and portable tool, the critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) device reflects the temporal resolution of visual function and has been widely used in clinical research. However, poor understanding of the technique and equipment limitations have restricted its clinical application in China. Main text: There was a decrease in the CFF value in various ophthalmic diseases, indicating that the CFF is sensitive to detect visual functional changes. A number of studies have shown that the CFF test can accurately distinguish patients with simple cataracts from those with cataracts combined with fundus disease, and, as a visual test, it can more accurately predict postoperative visual acuity without being affected by media opacity. This study comprehensive reviews the basic principles of CFF and its application in ophthalmology, especially in cataracts. Conclusions: As one of the tools for dynamic visual function detection, the CFF test could help doctors to assess the possible presence of fundus disease in cataracts patients, especially in eyes with dense cataracts, and more precisely provide a reasonable visual prognosis than other available visual tests.

BackgroundAmeloblastoma is a locally invasive and aggressive epithelial odontogenic neoplasm. The BRAF-V600E gene mutation is a prevalent genetic alteration found in this tumor and is considered to have a crucial role in its pathogenesis. The objective of this study is to develop and validate a radiomics-based machine learning method for the identification of BRAF-V600E gene mutations in ameloblastoma patients.MethodsIn this retrospective study, data from 103 patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma who underwent BRAF-V600E mutation testing were collected. Of these patients, 72 were included in the training cohort, while 31 were included in the validation cohort. To address class imbalance, synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) is applied in our study. Radiomics features were extracted from preprocessed CT images, and the most relevant features, including both radiomics and clinical data, were selected for analysis. Machine learning methods were utilized to construct models. The performance of these models in distinguishing between patients with and without BRAF-V600E gene mutations was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.ResultsWhen the analysis was based on radiomics signature, Random Forest performed better than the others, with the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.87 (95%CI, 0.68-1.00). The performance of XGBoost model is slightly lower than that of Random Forest, and its AUC is 0.83 (95% CI, 0.60-1.00). The nomogram evident that among younger women, the affected region primarily lies within the mandible, and patients with larger tumor diameters exhibit a heightened risk. Additionally, patients with higher radiomics signature scores are more susceptible to the BRAF-V600E gene mutations.ConclusionsOur study presents a comprehensive radiomics-based machine learning model using five different methods to accurately detect BRAF-V600E gene mutations in patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma. The Random Forest model’s high predictive performance, with AUC of 0.87, demonstrates its potential for facilitating a convenient and cost-effective way of identifying patients with the mutation without the need for invasive tumor sampling for molecular testing. This non-invasive approach has the potential to guide preoperative or postoperative drug treatment for affected individuals, thereby improving outcomes.

Background To figure out the efficacy, effects, safety and patient’s subjective perceptions of phacoemulsification with the active-fluidics system (AFS).Patients and methods This was a prospective, randomized, double-masked, controlled clinical study. Age-related cataract patients were recruited and randomly assigned to the AFS group and gravity-fluidics system (GFS) group in a ratio of 1:1 to have phacoemulsification. Participants were followed up at one day, one week, one month and three months postoperatively (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2100044409).Results The overall included participants were 107 finally. The total aspiration time of the AFS group was significantly less than that of the GFS group (p = .020), while no significant difference existed in cumulative dissipated energy and estimated fluid usage between the two groups. The best corrected visual acuity was significantly better in the AFS group at one day and one week postoperatively (p = .002, p = .038 respectively). The recovery of central corneal thickening and macular superficial vasculature increase was earlier in the AFS group. The central retinal thickness was significantly higher in the GFS group at one month and three months postoperatively (p = .029, p = .016 respectively). The incidence of corneal adverse events was higher in GFS group (p = .035). No serious adverse events occurred in either group. Pain scores and the scores of Cat-PROM5 questionnaire of the AFS group were significantly lower than that of the GFS group (p = .011, p = .002 respectively).Conclusion AFS improves the efficiency, effects, safety and patients’ subjective perceptions of phacoemulsification compared with GFS. It is worthwhile to promote its application in cataract surgery.KEY MESSAGESThe active-fluidics system automatically detects and maintains stable intraocular pressure at the set value.The active-fluidics system improves the efficiency, effects, safety and patients’ subjective perceptions in phacoemulsification.

Abstract Background As one of the severe complications of diabetes mellitus, diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in the working age worldwide. Although panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) was standard treatment, PRP-treated DR still has a high risk of progression. Hence, this study aimed to assess the risk factors and establish a model for predicting worsening diabetic retinopathy (DR-worsening) within five years after PRP. Methods Patients who were diagnosed with severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy or proliferative diabetic retinopathy and treated with PRP were included, and those patients were randomly assigned to either a training or validation cohort. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen potential risk factors for DR-worsening in the training cohort. Then the model was established after including significant independent risk factors and further validated using discrimination and calibration. Results A total of 271 patients were included, and 56.46% of patients had an outcome of DR-worsening. In the training cohort (n = 135), age (odds ratio [OR] = 0.94, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.90–0.98), baseline best corrected visual acuity (logMAR) (OR = 10.74, 95% CI 1.84–62.52), diabetic nephropathy (OR = 9.32, 95% CI 1.49–58.46), and hyperlipidemia (OR = 3.34, 95% CI 1.05–10.66) were screened out as the independent risk factors, which were incorporated into the predictive model. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and calibration slope in the training and validation cohort were 0.79, 0.96 (95% CI 0.60–1.31), and 0.79, 1.00 (95% CI 0.66–1.34), respectively. Two risk groups were developed depending on the best cut-off value of the predicted probability, and the actual probability was 34.90% and 82.79% in the low-risk and high-risk groups, respectively (P

Understanding the functions of enzymes in various physiological processes is important, but the design of signaling probes for fast analysis of enzymatic activity is particularly challenging. Herein, a fluorescence-enhanced probe, 10-methyl-2-nitro-acridone (MNA), was synthesized and applied to analyze nitroreductase (NTR) activity in vitro and in vivo. The detection mechanism is based on the nitro group in MNA reacting toward NTR with high reactivity and generating 10-methyl-2-amino- acridone (MAA) accompanied by an obvious fluorescence signal enhancement at 525 nm emission. The probe shows low cytotoxicity, fast response, and high selectivity and sensitivity with a limit of detection as low as 150 ng·mL−1. The probe was also employed for two-photon fluorescence imaging of NTR in zebrafish in vivo revealing the distribution of NTR. Versus existing NTR probes, the proposed probe shows favorable analytical performance including near-infrared light excitation with no other byproducts produced after the reaction. The superior properties of this signaling probe allow it to become a fluorescence imaging candidate in other biosystems.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether melatonin receptor type 1B (MTNR1B) rs10830963 polymorphism interacts with night shift work on the risk of incident stroke. METHODS: This study included individuals free of stroke at baseline from the UK Biobank. Night-shift work was assessed by the self-reported questions. MTNR1B rs10830963 was directly genotyped (CC, GC, and GG). Incident stroke was ascertained through hospital records and death registries. Cox proportional hazards models were employed to examine the associations of night shift work and MTNR1B rs10830963 with the risk of incident stroke. RESULTS: A total of 242 194 participants were finally included (mean age: 52.95 years; 51.63% women). Over 12-year follow-up, 3287 incident stroke events occurred. Night shift work increased the risk of incident stroke [hazard ratio (HR) 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00–1.28] after adjusting for socio-demographics, and this association attenuated after additional adjustment for lifestyle factors (HR 1.06, 95% CI 0.94–1.20). MTNR1B rs10830963 polymorphism modified the association between night shift work and incident stroke (Pfor interaction =0.010). In the Cox models adjusted for socio-demographics and lifestyle factors, among night-shift workers, minor allele G was associated with a reduced risk of incident stroke (GC versus CC, HR 0.74, 95% CI 0.58–0.95; GG versus CC, HR 0.65, 95% CI 0.40–1.06; P for trend=0.010); while night shift work was associated with a higher stroke risk only among MTNR1B rs10830963 CC carriers (HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.05–1.44) but not GC/GG carriers. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that MTNR1B rs10830963 may potentially modify the associations between night shift work and incident stroke.

Abstract Objectives We aimed to assess the effectiveness and nephrotoxicity of polymyxin B in critically ill patients with nosocomial pneumonia and to evaluate the utility of its therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Methods We retrospectively analyzed patients who received polymyxin B treatment for ≥48 h since the establishment of polymyxin B TDM in a 26‐bed tertiary referral intensive care unit. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to assess the variables associated with polymyxin B effectiveness and nephrotoxicity. Results A total of 62 patients were enrolled. Abstract Background Anti-angiogenic therapy has been shown to be a promising strategy for anti-tumor treatment. Increasing evidence indicates that tumor angiogenesis is affected by exosomes that are secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), but whether exosomes derived from MSCs suppress or promote angiogenesis remain paradoxical. The purpose of this study focused on understanding the potential role of exosomes derived from stem cells of human deciduous exfoliated teeth (SHED-Exos) in regulating angiogenesis and the underlying molecular mechanism. Methods Exosomes were isolated from supernatants of SHED cells using an exosome purification kit and were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis and western blot analysis. Cell Counting Kit-8, flow cytometric assays, western blots, wound healing and transwell migration assays were performed to characterize the roles of SHED-Exos on cell proliferation, apoptosis and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The anti-angiogenic activity of SHED-Exos was assessed via a tube formation assay of endothelial cells and angiogenesis-related factors were analyzed by western blotting. In vivo, we used the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay and an oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) xenograft transplantation model with nude mice that received multi-point injections at three-day intervals to evaluate the effects on angiogenesis. Furthermore, the sequencing of microRNAs (miRNAs) in SHED-Exos was performed to investigate the underlying anti-angiogenic mechanism. Results The results showed that SHED-Exos inhibit cell proliferation and migration and induce apoptosis in HUVECs. SHED-Exos suppress the tube-like structure formation of HUVECs in vitro. SHED-Exos downregulate several angiogenesis-related factors, including VEGFA, MMP-9 and ANGPT1. In vivo, the chick CAM assay verified that treatment with SHED-Exos inhibits micro-vascular formation, and importantly, significantly reduces the micro-vascular formation of tumors generated from xenografted OSCC cells, which was associated with the inhibition of tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, our data suggested that SHED-Exos are enriched with miR-100-5p and miR-1246 and are transferred to endothelial cells, which results in decreased tube formation via the down-regulation of VEGFA expression. Conclusions These results demonstrate that SHED-Exos inhibit angiogenesis in vitro and in vivo, which suggests that SHED-Exos could potentially serve as a novel and effective therapeutic approach for anti-angiogenic treatment.

Abstract Eye tracking is a widely used technique. To enhance eye gaze estimation in different contexts, many eye tracking datasets have been proposed. However, these datasets depend on calibrations in data capture and its applications. We seek to construct a dataset that enables the design of a calibration-free eye tracking device irrespective of users and scenes. To reach this goal, we present ARGaze, a dataset with 1,321,968 pairs of eye gaze images at 32 × 32 pixel resolution and 50 corresponding videos of world views based on a replicable augmented reality headset. The dataset was captured from 25 participants who completed eye gaze tasks for 30 min in both real-world and augmented reality scenes. To validate the dataset, we compared it against state-of-the-art eye gaze datasets in terms of effectiveness and accuracy and report that the ARGaze dataset achieved record low gaze estimation error by 3.70 degrees on average and 1.56 degrees on specific participants without calibrations to the two scenes. Implications for generalising the use of the dataset are discussed.

The severity of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) issue calls for effective detection and management of VOC materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are organic-inorganic hybrid crystals with promising prospects in luminescent sensing for VOC detection and identification. However, MOFs have limitations, including weak response signals and poor sensitivity towards VOCs, limiting their application to specific types of VOC gases. To address the issue of limited recognition and single luminosity for specific VOCs, we have introduced fluorescent guest molecules into MOFs as reference emission centers to enhance sensitivity. This composite material combines the gas adsorption ability of MOFs to effectively adsorb VOCs. We utilized (MIL-125/NH2-MIL-125) as the parent material for adsorbing fluorescent molecules and selected suitable solid fluorescent probes (FGFL-B1) through fluorescence enhancement using thioflavin T and MIL-125. FGFL-B1 exhibited a heightened fluorescence response to various VOCs through charge transfer between fluorescent guest molecules and ligands. The fluorescence enhancement effect of FGFL-B1 on tetrahydrofuran (THF) was particularly pronounced, accompanied by a color change from yellow to yellowish green in the presence of CCl4. FGFL-B1 demonstrated excellent adsorption properties for THF and CCl4, with saturated adsorption capacities of 655.4 mg g−1 and 811.2 mg g−1, respectively. Furthermore, FGFL-B1 displayed strong luminescence stability and reusability, making it an excellent sensing candidate. This study addresses the limitations of MOFs in VOC detection, opening avenues for industrial and environmental applications.

Drought stress is one of the major causes of crop losses. The WRKY families play important roles in the regulation of many plant processes, including drought stress response. However, the function of individual WRKY genes in plants is still under investigation. Here, we identified a new member of the WRKY families, OsWRKY97, and analyzed its role in stress resistance by using a series of transgenic plant lines. OsWRKY97 positively regulates drought tolerance in rice. OsWRKY97 was expressed in all examined tissues and could be induced by various abiotic stresses and abscisic acid (ABA). OsWRKY97-GFP was localized to the nucleus. Various abiotic stress-related cis-acting elements were observed in the promoters of OsWRKY97. The results of OsWRKY97-overexpressing plant analyses revealed that OsWRKY97 plays a positive role in drought stress tolerance. In addition, physiological analyses revealed that OsWRKY97 improves drought stress tolerance by improving the osmotic adjustment ability, oxidative stress tolerance, and water retention capacity of the plant. Furthermore, OsWRKY97-overexpressing plants also showed higher sensitivity to exogenous ABA compared with that of wild-type rice (WT). Overexpression of OsWRKY97 also affected the transcript levels of ABA-responsive genes and the accumulation of ABA. These results indicate that OsWRKY97 plays a crucial role in the response to drought stress and may possess high potential value in improving drought tolerance in rice.

The peel and fruit of Citrus varieties have been a raw material for some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Pure total flavonoids from Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr. (PTFC), including naringin, hesperidin, narirutin, and neohesperidin, have been attracted increasing attention for their multiple clinical efficacies. Based on existing in vitro and in vivo research, this study systematically reviewed the biological functions of PTFC and its components in preventing or treating liver metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, intestinal barrier dysfunction, as well as malignancies. PTFC and its components are capable of regulating glycolipid metabolism, blocking peroxidation and persistent inflammation, inhibiting tumor progression, protecting the integrity of intestinal barrier and positively regulating intestinal microbiota, while the differences in fruit cultivation system, picking standard, manufacturing methods, delivery system and individual intestinal microecology will have impact on the specific therapeutic effect. Thus, PTFC is a promising drug for the treatment of some chronic diseases, as well as continuous elaborate investigations are necessary to improve its effectiveness and bioavailability.

Aims: We aimed to assess the impact of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on voriconazole exposure.Methods: Adult critically ill patients with or without ECMO support receiving intravenous voriconazole therapy were included in this retrospective study conducted in a tertiary referral intensive care unit. The first therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) results of voriconazole in ECMO patients and non-ECMO patients were collected, and the prevalence of subtherapeutic concentrations was analyzed. Multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of ECMO on voriconazole exposure.Results: A total of 132 patients (including 66 patients with ECMO support) were enrolled and their respective first voriconazole trough concentrations (Cmin) were recorded. ObjectiveChemotherapy-related brain impairments and changes can occur in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy and have a substantial impact on survivors’ quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the brain neuropathological alterations and response mechanisms to provide a theoretical basis for rehabilitation strategies. This study aimed to investigate the related brain morphological changes and clarified their correlation with clinical and pathological indicators in patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy.MethodsOverall, 28 patients with chemotherapy, 56 patients without chemotherapy, and 41 healthy controls were categorized in three groups, matched for age, sex, and years of education, and included in the cross-sectional comparison of brain volume and cortical thickness. 14 matched patients before and after chemotherapy were subjected to paired comparison for longitudinal observation of brain morphological changes. Three-dimensional T1-weighted images were acquired from all participants, and quantitative parameters were calculated using the formula of the change from baseline. Correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between abnormal morphological indices and clinical information of patients.ResultsBrain regions with volume differences among the three groups were mainly distributed in frontal lobe and limbic cortex. Additionally, significant differences in cerebrospinal fluid were observed in most ventricles, and the main brain regions with cortical thickness differences were the gyrus rectus and medial frontal cortex of the frontal lobe, transverse temporal gyrus of the temporal lobe, insular cortex, anterior insula, and posterior insula of the insular cortex. According to the paired comparison, decreased brain volumes in the patients after chemotherapy appeared in some regions of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes; limbic cortex; insular cortex; and lobules VI-X and decreased cortical thickness in the patients after chemotherapy was found in the frontal, temporal, limbic, and insular cortexes. In the correlation analysis, only the differentiation degree of the tumor and duration after chemotherapy were significantly correlated with imaging indices in the abnormal brain regions.ConclusionsOur findings illustrate the platinum-related brain reactivity morphological alterations which provide more insights into the neuropathological mechanisms of patients with lung cancer after platinum chemotherapy and empirical support for the details of brain injury related to cancer and chemotherapy.

Abstract p53, the major tumor suppressor, is frequently mutated in many cancers, and up to 84% of human melanomas harbor wild-type p53, which is considered to be an ideal target for melanoma therapy. Here, we evaluated the antitumor activity of a carbazole derivative, 9-ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-carbaldehyde (ECCA), on melanoma cells. ECCA had a selectively strong inhibitory activity against the growth of BRAF-mutated and BRAF-wild-type melanoma cells but had little effect on normal human primary melanocytes. ECCA inhibited melanoma cell growth by increasing cell apoptosis, which was associated with the upregulation of caspase activities and was significantly abrogated by the addition of a caspase inhibitor. In vivo assays confirmed that ECCA suppressed melanoma growth by enhancing cell apoptosis and reducing cell proliferation, and importantly ECCA did not have any evident toxic effects on normal tissues. RNA-Seq analysis identified several pathways related to cell apoptosis that were affected by ECCA, notably, activation of the p53 signaling pathway. Biochemical assays demonstrated that ECCA enhanced the phosphorylation of p53 at Ser15 in melanoma cells harboring wild-type p53, and importantly, the knockdown or deletion of p53 in those cells counteracted the ECCA-induced apoptosis, as well as senescence. Further investigations revealed that ECCA enhanced the phosphorylation of p38-MAPK and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), and treatment with either a p38-MAPK or a JNK inhibitor rescued the cell growth inhibition elicited by ECCA, which depended on the expression of the p53 gene. Finally, the combination of ECCA with a BRAF inhibitor significantly enhanced the growth inhibition of melanoma cells. In summary, our study demonstrates that the carbazole derivative, ECCA, induces melanoma cell apoptosis and senescence through the activation of p53 to significantly and selectively suppress the growth of melanoma cells without affecting normal human melanocytes, suggesting its potential to develop a new drug for melanoma therapy.

Pharmacometric analysis is often used to quantify the differences and similarities between formulation prototypes. In the regulatory framework, it plays a significant role in the evaluation of bioequivalence. While non-compartmental analysis provides an unbiased data evaluation, mechanistic compartmental models such as the physiologically-based nanocarrier biopharmaceutics model promise improved sensitivity and resolution for the underlying causes of inequivalence. In the present investigation, both techniques were applied to two nanomaterial-based formulations for intravenous injection, namely, albumin-stabilized rifabutin nanoparticles and rifabutin-loaded PLGA nanoparticles. The antibiotic rifabutin holds great potential for the treatment of severe and acute infections of patients co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus and tuberculosis. The formulations differ significantly in their formulation and material attributes, resulting in an altered biodistribution pattern as confirmed in a biodistribution study in rats. The albumin-stabilized delivery system further undergoes a dose-dependent change in particle size which leads to a small yet significant change in the in vivo performance. A second analysis was conducted comparing the dose fraction-scaled pharmacokinetic profiles of three dose levels of albumin-stabilized rifabutin nanoparticles. The dose strength affects both the nanomaterial-related absorption and biodistribution of the carrier as well as the drug-related distribution and elimination parameters, increasing the background noise and difficulty of detecting inequivalence. Depending on the pharmacokinetic parameter (e.g., AUC, Cmax, Clobs), the relative (percentage) difference from the average observed using non-compartmental modeling ranged from 85% to 5.2%. A change in the formulation type (PLGA nanoparticles vs. albumin-stabilized rifabutin nanoparticles) resulted in a similar level of inequivalence as compared to a change in the dose strength. A mechanistic compartmental analysis using the physiologically-based nanocarrier biopharmaceutics model led to an average difference of 152.46% between the two formulation prototypes. Albumin-stabilized rifabutin nanoparticles tested at different dose levels led to a 128.30% difference, potentially due to changes in particle size. A comparison of different dose strengths of PLGA nanoparticles, on average, led to a 3.87% difference. This study impressively illustrates the superior sensitivity of mechanistic compartmental analysis when dealing with nanomedicines.

Augmented reality museums allow visitors to jointly view and interact with exhibits. However, real-time exhibit browsing does not accommodate latecomers to museums and offers limited support to temporally separated visitors. To stimulate asynchronous exhibit browsing, we developed a distance-driven user interface that divided the augmented reality exhibit-egocentric space into four distance ranges, each having a set of social networking features and different privileges for exhibit viewing and interaction. The user interface enables asynchronous exhibit browsing for visitors participating at different times. We conducted empirical studies to evaluate how the user interface affected visitors’ collaborative exhibit browsing in terms of perceived usability and learning gains. The results show that the perceived usability of the user interface is consistently high across all distance ranges. The user interface stimulates collaborative exhibit browsing with significant improvements in learning efficiency and learning attention durations, although learning satisfaction showed no difference across the participants. Implications for how the distance-driven user interface can be generalized for other interactive applications are discussed.

Physiological root resorption of deciduous teeth is a normal phenomenon. How the angiogenesis process is regulated to provide adequate levels of oxygen and nutrients in hypoxic conditions when the dental pulp tissue is reduced at the stage of root resorption is not fully understood. In this study, we designed hypoxic preconditioning (2%) to mimic the physiological conditions. We isolated exosomes from hypoxic-preconditioned SHED (Hypo-exos) cells and from normally cultured SHED cells (Norm-exos). We found that treatment with Hypo-exos significantly enhanced the growth, migration and tube formation of endothelial cells in vitro compared with Norm-exos. We also performed matrigel plug assays in vivo and higher expression of VEGF and higher number of lumenal structures that stained positive for CD31 were found in the Hypo-exos treated group. To understand the potential molecular mechanism responsible for the positive effects of Hypo-exos, we performed exosomal miRNA sequencing and validated that Hypo-exos transferred both let-7f-5p and miR-210-3p to promote the tube formation of endothelial cells. Further study revealed that those two miRNAs regulate angiogenesis via the let-7f-5p/AGO1/VEGF and/or miR-210-3p/ephrinA3 signal pathways. Finally, we found that the increased release of exosomes regulated by hypoxia treatment may be related to Rab27a. Taking these data together, the present study demonstrates that exosomes derived from hypoxic-preconditioned SHED cells promote angiogenesis by transferring let-7f-5p and miR-210-3p, which suggests that they can potentially be developed as a novel therapeutic approach for pro-angiogenic therapy in tissue regeneration engineering.

Rice blast is one of the most destructive diseases of rice and is caused by the infection with rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae. In the present study, we obtained 12 bacterial isolates from Sichuan basin neutral purplish soil. Among them, the strain named ZW-10 showed significant activity against M. oryzae. Morphological and biochemical studies, along with 16S rDNA sequencing analysis, proved that the strain belongs to Bacillus velezensis. The cell-free culture filtrate of ZW-10 inhibited the growth of M. oryzae, suggesting the presence of active enzymes and secondary metabolites. The experimental results showed that ZW-10 produced cellulase, protease, and peroxidase. The temperature experiment indicated that the secondary metabolisms of ZW-10 remained active at high temperature. In addition, this strain had good acidity resistance. As shown in leaf experiments in vitro as well as field trials, the liquid culture and the cell-free culture filtrate of ZW-10 had significant inhibitory effects on rice blast. In conclusion, ZW-10 can be used as a potential biological agent in the control of rice blast.

Many proteins in public databases are recognized as proteins with domains of unknown function (DUF). DUF1191 is such a protein family that consists of plant proteins with unknown function. In this study, we analyzed the basic information of four OsDUF1191 members (OsDUF1191.1–OsDUF1191.4) in rice Nipponbare. OsDUF1191 family members can be divided into four categories by phylogenetic analysis. In order to find out whether these members have tissue-specific expression preference, we used real-time polymerase chain reaction to examine the expression in 15 distinct rice tissues. Rice blast is one of the most serious rice diseases. It is caused by Magnaporthe oryzae resulting in rice shortages. Biological control has become a new measure in the control of plant diseases. In this study, we isolated antagonistic bacteria from the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Baizhi (Angelica dahurica) against M. oryzae. Biochemical, physiological and 16S rDNA sequence analysis proved that it was Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and we named the strain Rdx5. The experiment proved that Rdx5 can produce cellulase, protease, indole-3-acetic acid and 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase. The sterilized culture filtrate of Rdx5 had strong antifungal activity after treatment at 100 °C for 30 min. In addition, its antifungal activity did not change in strong acid, neutral and weak alkaline environment. However, under strong alkaline conditions, the antifungal activity decreased significantly. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that Rdx5 could prevent and treat rice blast, since the prevention group performed better than the treatment group. B. amyloliquefaciens Rdx5 might provide an alternative resource for the biocontrol of rice blast.

Purpose: To investigate the dynamic functional connectivity (DFC) and static parameters of graph theory in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and the associations of DFC and topological properties with cognitive performance.Methods: Thirty-three control subjects and 32 SCD individuals were enrolled in this study, and neuropsychological evaluations and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning were performed. Thirty-three components were selected by group independent component analysis to construct 7 functional networks. Based on the sliding window approach and k-means clustering, distinct DFC states were identified. We calculated the temporal properties of fractional windows in each state, the mean dwell time in each state, and the number of transitions between each pair of DFC states. The global and local static parameters were assessed by graph theory analysis. The differences in DFC and topological metrics, and the associations of the altered neuroimaging measures with cognitive performance were assessed.Results: The whole cohort demonstrated 4 distinct connectivity states. Compared to the control group, the SCD group showed increased fractional windows and an increased mean dwell time in state 4, characterized by hypoconnectivity both within and between networks. The SCD group also showed decreased fractional windows and a decreased mean dwell time in state 2, dominated by hyperconnectivity within and between the auditory, visual and somatomotor networks. The number of transitions between state 1 and state 2, between state 2 and state 3, and between state 2 and state 4 was significantly reduced in the SCD group compared to the control group. No significant differences in global or local topological metrics were observed. The altered DFC properties showed significant correlations with cognitive performance.Conclusion: Our findings indicated DFC network reconfiguration in the SCD stage, which may underlie the early cognitive decline in SCD subjects and serve as sensitive neuroimaging biomarkers for the preclinical detection of individuals with incipient Alzheimer's disease.

Individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) are at higher risk of incipient Alzheimer's disease (AD). Spatial navigation (SN) impairments in AD dementia and mild cognitive impairment patients have been well-documented; however, studies investigating SN deficits in SCD subjects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore whether basal forebrain (BF) and entorhinal cortex (EC) atrophy contribute to spatial disorientation in the SCD stage. In total, 31 SCD subjects and 24 normal controls were enrolled and administered cognitive scales, a 2-dimensional computerized SN test, and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning. We computed the differences in navigation distance errors and volumes of BF subfields, EC, and hippocampus between the SCD and control groups. The correlations between MRI volumetry and navigation distance errors were also calculated. Compared with the controls, the SCD subjects performed worse in both egocentric and allocentric navigation. The SCD group showed volume reductions in the whole BF (p < 0.05, uncorrected) and the Ch4p subfield (p < 0.05, Bonferroni corrected), but comparable EC and hippocampal volumes with the controls. In the SCD cohort, the allocentric errors were negatively correlated with total BF (r = −0.625, p < 0.001), Ch4p (r = −0.625, p < 0.001), total EC (r = −0.423, p = 0.031), and left EC volumes (r = −0.442, p = 0.024), adjusting for age, gender, years of education, total intracranial volume, and hippocampal volume. This study demonstrates that SN deficits and BF atrophy may be promising indicators for the early detection of incipient AD patients. The reduced BF volume, especially in the Ch4p subfield, may serve as a structural basis for allocentric disorientation in SCD subjects independent of hippocampal atrophy. Our findings may have further implications for the preclinical diagnosis and intervention for potential AD patients.

Rice blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the three major diseases affecting rice production and quality; it reduces rice grain yield by nearly 30%. In the early stage of this study, a strain of Bacillus velezensis with strong inhibition of M. oryzae was isolated and named ZW10. In vitro assays indicated prolonged germination time of conidia of M. oryzae treated with the antifungal substances of ZW10, 78% of the conidia could not form appressorium, and the conidial tubes expanded to form vacuolar structure and then shrank. The results of FDA-PI composite dyes showed that the antifungal substances of ZW10 inhibited the normal activity of M. oryzae hyphae that were rarely able to infect the epidermal cells of rice leaf sheath in vivo tests. In addition, rice treated with the antifungal substances of ZW10 showed a variety of defense responses, including activation of defense-related enzymes, increased expression of the salicylic acid pathway genes, and accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which might function directly or indirectly in resistance to pathogen attack. The field experiment with rice blast infection in different periods showed that the antifungal substances of ZW10 had the same control effect as carbendazim. The significant biological control activity of ZW10 and its capacity to stimulate host defenses suggest that this B. velezensis strain has the potential to be developed into a biopesticide for the biocontrol of rice blast.

Abstract Devising new catalytic systems for the efficient removal of organic chlorides from contaminated sites has important benefits for the human health. Efficiency requires the use of performing catalysts and the extraction of the contaminant from the environment. Here we describe a novel strategy that combines both aspects. A one‐pot surfactant‐directed approach allows the preparation of ultrafine palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) finely dispersed inside well‐ordered geometric structures, ranging from loose vesicles to nanocubes, from cylindrical to spherical assemblies. These assemblies work as nanoreactors where hydrophobic organic chlorides can be concentrated in the surfactant‐tail environment and efficiently reduced by the PdNP catalysts. As a proof‐of‐concept, we studied the dechlorination of the notorious pollutant 4‐chlorophenol. The nanoreactors display rapid dechlorination ability, excellent catalytic activity, and good stability and recyclability. This study provides a new methodology for effective water remediation that combines the advantages of both extraction and supported heterogeneous catalysis.

Background: Probiotics have been associated with the treatment of depression and anxiety. However, the results reported in the literature have been inconsistent, and no meta-analysis specifically reported probiotics used on participants with varying levels of emotional state.Methods: This meta-analysis aimed to study the effectiveness of probiotics on anxious or depressive symptomatology for participants under stress conditions or with a depressive or anxiety disorder diagnosis. Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched through December 2019 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcomes were depression and anxiety scores. Main inclusion criteria: RCTs of probiotics for participants with a mood or emotional disorder diagnosis or under stress situations; and all participants were adults (age ≥16 years); Assessed by the modified Jadad assessment scale found seven high-quality studies and three low-quality studies.Results: Ten clinical trials (n = 685 total participants) were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All studies were assessed as low or moderate risk of bias. The meta-analysis showed that probiotics could significantly reduce the depression scale for patients with anxiety and depression, and healthy participants under stress. However, there was no significant difference between the probiotics and placebo groups in the reduction of patient anxiety scores, even if they are depressive or anxious patients or healthy participants under stress. Subgroup analysis revealed that probiotics had significant effect on depressive symptoms just in patients with depression, and no significant change in anxiety in patients, and no improvement in participant performance under stress.Conclusions: Probiotics could alleviate depressive symptoms in patients with a depression diagnosis or depression scores also in anxiety disorder diagnosis, and suggesting that probiotics may be adjunct therapies for mood or emotional disorders. Therefore, it is essential that probiotics could be more involved in the treatment of patients with depression in the future. The evidence of probiotics successfully treating depression is still insufficient, and more high-quality studies on patients with depression are still needed.

The traditional Chinese medicine Shen-ling-bai-zhu-san (SLBZS) is described in “Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang.” SLBZS has been shown to be effective against many gastrointestinal diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of SLBZS on experimental colitis in mice and to define the potential mechanisms. Our data suggest that compared to the model group, SLBZS treatment increases mouse body weight and colon length, decreases the DAI score, and improves colonic injury. SLBZS reduces the production of cytokines (IL-1β, IL-18, and TNF-α) in colon tissue and mouse colonic mucosal epithelial (MCME) cells. Mechanistically, SLBZS inhibits inflammation by inhibiting the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways. Further mechanistic analyses showed that SLBZS attenuates the expression levels of pyroptosis-related genes, including NLRP3, ASC, and GSDMD-N in the colons of mice. In addition, SLBZS restores the levels of the colon tight junction proteins ZO-1 and occludin, suggesting that it protects colonic barrier integrity and ameliorates the progression of colitis. In this paper, we demonstrate that SLBZS attenuates DSS-induced ulcerative colitis injury in mice via the MAPK/NF-κB and pyroptosis signaling pathway. These results indicate that SLBZS is a potential drug for the treatment of UC.

Xinjiang, China, is a typical arid and semi-arid region of Central Asia that significantly lacks freshwater resources, and the surface runoff in this region is mainly supplied by mountain glacier and snow cover meltwater. Based on the above background and issues of transnational water resources between Xinjiang and Central Asia along the Silk Road Economic Belt, which were highlighted in the major strategy of “The Belt and Road”, this study analysed the spatial and temporal variations in snow cover and snow cover days in the Xinjiang region from 2001 to 2015. The study area includes four subregions: Northern Xinjiang, Southern Xinjiang, Eastern Xinjiang and the Ili River Valley. Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 8-day snow cover data were used after removing clouds by combining MOD10A2 and MYD10A2. The results showed that seasonal snow cover occurred from October to April in most regions of Xinjiang and that this snow cover consisted of two processes: snow accumulation and snow ablation. The maximum snow cover occurred in January, whereas the minimum snow cover occurred from July to August. During the seasonal snow cover period, the snowfall rates in Northern Xinjiang and the Ili River Valley were higher, while the other regions had a low snowfall probability. To study the relationship between altitude and snow cover, the normalized snow elevation correlation index (NSACI) was calculated. The NSACI showed a significant correlation between snow cover and elevation in most regions of Xinjiang and was classified into five grades. Snow cover days did not fluctuate obviously from 2001 to 2015, and a decreasing trend was observed in the four subregions except for the Ili River Valley (nonsignificant decreasing trend). We also observed a correlation between snow cover and temperature and found that the correlations between monthly snow cover and monthly temperature in the four subregions were strongly related to the underlying land type and global warming background, which also suggests that the special topography of Xinjiang greatly influences both snow cover and climate change.

Purpose. To evaluate visual acuity (VA) and refractive status in patients with cataract and irregular astigmatism with a regular central component after phacoemulsification with implantation of a toric intraocular lens (IOL). Methods. Patients with cataract associated with irregular astigmatism with a regular central component were enrolled. All patients underwent phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation. Biological control as a promising method to combat plant disease has gained public attention in recent years. In the present study, we isolated 12 strains resistant to Magnaporthe oryzae from western Sichuan subalpine soil. Among them, CQ07 exhibited remarkable activity against M. oryzae. The result of 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed that CQ07 is approximately 99% similar to Bacillus australimaris. The sterilized culture filtrate of CQ07 inhibited the growth of M. oryzae, which motivated us to deduce the influence of CQ07 on the pathogenicity of M. oryzae. As shown by experimentation, sterilized culture filtrate (10 μl/ml) of CQ07 can delay and even suppress the germination of conidia and prevent the formation of appressorium in vitro and in vivo. In addition, by simulative field tests, the spraying of conidia suspension diluted with sterilized culture filtrate of CQ07 reduced infection of rice blast. To better control rice blasts, understanding the infection mechanism of M. oryzae and inhibiting the mechanism of the antagonistic strain is of great importance.

As promising heterojunction photocatalysts, the binary CdS-based heterojunctions were investigated extensively. In most of the reported CdS-based heterojunctions, however, electrons come from the semiconductor with wide band gap (e.g., TiO2) would limit the visible-light absorption of CdS and hence lower the performance. In this work, we introduced 1T-MoS2 to form a novel ternary heterojunction, namely CdS/1T-MoS2/TiO2, in which 1T-MoS2 has more positive conduction band than CdS and TiO2. The hydrogen evolution rate of CdS/1T-MoS2/TiO2 reaches 3.15 mmol g−1 h−1, which is approximately 12 and 35 times higher than that of pure CdS and CdS/TiO2 binary heterojunction under the same conditions, respectively. This performance enhancement could be attributed to the presence of 1T-MoS2 and a plausible mechanism is proposed based on photoelectrochemical characterizations. Our results illustrate that the performance of CdS-based heterojunctions for solar hydrogen evolution can be greatly improved by appropriate materials selection.

Biological control is a promising measure in the control of plant disease. In the present study, we isolated 13 endophytic strains from Angelica dahurica. Among them, an endophytic strain which was named GYLH001 exhibited remarkable activity against Magnaporthe oryzae. 16S rRNA sequence analysis, biochemical and physiological proved that it is Bacillus tequilensis. The sterilized culture filtrate of GYLH001 can inhibit the growth of M.oryzae, which suggests the presence of secondary metabolites. Proved by experiment, GYLH001 can produce cellulase, protease, gelatinase, indole-3-acetic acid and 1-amino-cyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase. In addition, the temperature experiment showed that secondary metabolites produced by GYLH001 had good thermal stability. They can remain activity even heated at 100°C for 30 min. They also had good acid-resistance in heavily acidic condition. But under alkaline condition, the antifungal effect decreased significantly. By simulative field tests, the spraying of GYLH001 spore solution could prevent and treat rice blast. Through continuous separation and purification of sterilized culture filtrate and identification by mass spectrometry, the molecular weight of an active substance is 364.26. In the control of rice blast, B. tequilensis GYLH001 has potential as a biological control agent in agriculture.

The crystal form is one of the preferred formulations for biotherapeutics, especially thanks to its ability to ensure high stability of the active ingredient. In addition, crystallization allows the recovery of a very pure drug, thus facilitating the manufacturing process. However, in many cases, crystallization is not trivial, and other formulations, such as the concentrate solution, represent the only choice. This is the case of anti-cluster of differentiation 20 (anti-CD20), which is one of the most sold antibodies for therapeutic uses. Here, we propose a set of optimized crystallization conditions for producing anti-CD20 needle-shaped crystals within 24 h in a very reproducible manner with high yield. High crystallization yield was obtained with high reproducibility using both hanging drop vapor diffusion and meso batch, which is a major step forward toward further scaling up the crystallization of anti-CD20. The influence of anti-CD20 storage conditions and the effect of different ions on the crystallization processes were also assessed. The crystal quality and the high yield allowed the first crystallographic investigation on anti-CD20, which positively confirmed the presence of the antibody in the crystals.

Soil moisture is an important aspect of heat transfer process and energy exchange between land-atmosphere systems, and it is a key link to the surface and groundwater circulation and land carbon cycles. In this study, according to the characteristics of the study area, an advanced integral equation model was used for numerical simulation analysis to establish a database of surface microwave scattering characteristics under sparse vegetation cover. Thus, a soil moisture retrieval model suitable for arid area was constructed. The results were as follows: (1) The response of the backscattering coefficient to soil moisture and associated surface roughness is significantly and logarithmically correlated under different incidence angles and polarization modes, and, a database of microwave scattering characteristics of arid soil surface under sparse vegetation cover was established. (2) According to the Sentinel-1 radar system parameters, a model for retrieving spatial distribution information of soil moisture was constructed; the soil moisture content information was extracted, and the results were consistent with the spatial distribution characteristics of soil moisture in the same period in the research area. (3) For the 0⁻10 cm surface soil moisture, the correlation coefficient between the simulated value and the measured value reached 0.8488, which means that the developed retrieval model has applicability to derive surface soil moisture in the oasis region of arid regions. This study can provide method for real-time and large-scale detection of soil moisture content in arid areas.
