We take a fresh look at the relationship between $K$-regularity and regularity of schemes, proving two results in this direction. First, we show that $K_2$-regular affine algebras over fields of characteristic zero are normal. Second, we improve on Vorst's $K$-regularity bound in the case of local complete intersections; this is related to recent work on higher du Bois singularities., Comment: 10 pages

This paper concerns the computation and identification of the (homological) Conley index over the integers, in the context of discrete dynamical systems generated by continuous maps. We discuss the significance with respect to nonlinear dynamics of using integer, as opposed to field, coefficients. We translate the problem into the language of commutative ring theory. More precisely, we relate shift equivalence in the category of finitely generated abelian groups to the classification of $\mathbb{Z}[t]$-modules whose underlying abelian group is given. We provide tools to handle the classification problem, but also highlight the associated computational challenges.

Suppose $\Gamma$ is a submonoid of a lattice, not containing a line. In this note, we use the natural $\Gamma$-grading on the monoid algebra $R[\Gamma]$ to prove structural results about the relative $K$-theory $K(R[\Gamma], R)$. When $R$ contains a field, we prove a decomposition indexed by the rays in $\Gamma$, and a compatible action by the Witt vectors of $R$ for each $\mathbf N$-grading of $\Gamma$. In characteristic zero, there is additionally an action by Witt vectors for the truncation set $\Gamma$. Finally, we apply this to get a ray-like description of $K_*(R[x_1,...,x_n])$ proposed by J.\,Davis.

We develop the K-theory of sets with an action of a pointed monoid (or monoid scheme), analogous to the $K$-theory of modules over a ring (or scheme). In order to form localization sequences, we construct the quotient category of a nice regular category by a Serre subcategory.

For a fixed $N$, we analyze the space of all sequences $z=(z_1,\dots,z_N)$, approximating a continuous function on the circle, with a given persistence diagram $P$, and show that the typical components of this space are homotopy equivalent to $S^1$. We also consider the space of functions on $Y$-shaped (resp., star-shaped) trees with a 2-point persistence diagram, and show that this space is homotopy equivalent to $S^1$ (resp., to a bouquet of circles).

We establish some structural results for the Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups of schemes over $\mathbb{Z}[1/2]$, including homotopy invariance for Witt groups and a formula for the Witt and Grothendieck-Witt groups of punctured affine spaces over a scheme. Let $V$ be an algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb R$, and $V_{top}$ the space of its complex points. We compare the algebraic Witt group $W(V)$ of symmetric bilinear forms on vector bundles over $V$, with the topological Witt group $WR(V_{top})$ of symmetric forms on Real vector bundles over $V_{top}$ in the sense of Atiyah, especially when $V$ is 2-dimensional. To do so, we develop topological tools to calculate $WR(V_{top})$, and to measure the difference between $W(V)$ and $WR(V_{top})$.

This paper studies the K-theory of categories of partially cancellative monoid sets, which is better behaved than that of all finitely generated monoid sets. A number of foundational results are proved, making use of the formalism of CGW-categories due to Campbell and Zakharevich, and numerous example computations are provided., Comment: 14 pages

We introduce a version of the Brauer--Wall group for Real vector bundles of algebras (in the sense of Atiyah), and compare it to the topological analogue of the Witt group. This work is motivated by the following question in data-driven study of dynamical systems: given a dynamical system that is observed via time series of persistence diagrams that encode topological features of solutions snapshots, what conclusions can be drawn about solutions of the original dynamical system? In this paper we provide a definition of a persistence diagram for a point in $\mathbb{R}^N$ modeled on piecewise monotone functions. We then provide conditions under which time series of persistence diagrams can be used to guarantee the existence of a fixed point of the flow on $\mathbb{R}^N$ that generates the time series. To obtain this result requires an understanding of the preimage of the persistence map. The main theorem of this paper gives conditions under which these preimages are contractible simplicial complexes., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We give a $K$-theoretic criterion for a quasi-projective variety to be smooth. If $\mathbb{L}$ is a line bundle corresponding to an ample invertible sheaf on $X$, it suffices that $K_q(X) = K_q(\mathbb{L})$ for all $q\le\dim(X)+1$., Comment: 11 pages

We show that if $X$ is a toric scheme over a regular commutative ring $k$ then the direct limit of the $K$-groups of $X$ taken over any infinite sequence of nontrivial dilations is homotopy invariant. This theorem was previously known for regular commutative rings containing a field. The affine case of our result was conjectured by Gubeladze. We prove analogous results when $k$ is replaced by an appropriate $K$-regular, not necessarily commutative $k$-algebra.

We introduce the notion of the "covering type" of a space, which is more subtle that the notion of Lusternik Schnirelman category. It measures the complexity of a space which arises from coverings by contractible subspaces whose non-empty intersections are also contractible., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We study the relative Picard group $Pic(f)$ of a map $f:X\to S$ of schemes. If $f$ is faithful affine, it is the relative Cartier divisor group $I(f)$. The relative group $K_0(f)$ has a $\gamma$-filtration, and $Pic(f)$ is the top quotient for the $\gamma$-filtration. When $f$ is induced by a ring homomorphism $A\to B$, we show that the relative "nil" groups $NPic(f)$ and $NK_n(f)$ are continuous $W(A)$-modules.

We introduce a general framework to unify several variants of twisted topological $K$-theory. We focus on the role of finite dimensional real simple algebras with a product-preserving involution, showing that Grothendieck-Witt groups provide interesting examples of twisted $K$-theory. These groups are linked with the classification of algebraic vector bundles on real algebraic varieties.

If $i:A\subset B$ is a commutative ring extension, we show that the group $\mathcal I(A,B)$ of invertible $A$-submodules of $B$ is contracted in the sense of Bass, with $L\mathcal I(A,B)=H^0_{et}(A,i_*\mathbb Z/\mathbb Z)$. Fix a symbol $\underline{a}$ in the mod-$\ell$ Milnor $K$-theory of a field $k$, and a norm variety $X$ for $\underline{a}$. We show that the ideal generated by $\underline{a}$ is the kernel of the $K$-theory map induced by $k\subset k(X)$ and give generators for the annihilator of the ideal. Let $V$ be an algebraic variety over $\mathbb R$. The purpose of this paper is to compare its algebraic Witt group $W(V)$ with a new topological invariant $WR(V_{\mathbb C})$, based on symmetric forms on Real vector bundles (in the sense of Atiyah) on the space of complex points of $V$, This invariant lies between $W(V)$ and the group $KO(V_{\mathbb R})$ of $\mathbb R$-linear topological vector bundles on $V_{\mathbb R}$, the set of real points of $V$. We show that the comparison maps $W(V)\to WR(V_{\mathbb C})$ and $WR(V_{\mathbb C})\to KO(V_{\mathbb R})$ that we define are isomorphisms modulo bounded 2-primary torsion. We give precise bounds for the exponent of the kernel and cokernel of these maps, depending upon the dimension of $V.$ These results improve theorems of Knebusch, Brumfiel and Mah\'e. Along the way, we prove a comparison theorem between algebraic and topological Hermitian $K$-theory, and homotopy fixed point theorems for the latter. We also give a new proof (and a generalization) of a theorem of Brumfiel.

We define and study the Picard group of a monoid scheme and the class group of a normal monoid scheme. To do so, we develop some ideal theory for (pointed abelian) noetherian monoids, including primary decomposition and discrete valuations. The normalization of a monoid turns out to be a monoid scheme, but not always a monoid., Comment: 14 pages

We give many examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ for which Bloch's conjecture holds, for all values of $K^2$ except 9. Our surfaces are equipped with an involution.

We classify all \'etale cohomology operations on $H_\et^n(-,\muell{i})$, showing that they were all constructed by Epstein. We also construct operations $P^a$ on the mod-$\ell$ motivic cohomology groups $H^{p,q}$, differing from Voevodsky's operations; we use them to classify all motivic cohomology operations on $H^{p,1}$ and $H^{1,q}$ and suggest a general classification., Comment: 26 pages

We give conditions for the Mayer-Vietoris property to hold for the algebraic K-theory of blow-up squares of toric varieties in any characteristic, using the theory of monoid schemes. These conditions are used to relate algebraic K-theory to topological cyclic homology in characteristic p. Let $R$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of a smooth projective variety $X$ over a field $\k$ of characteristic~0. We calculate the $K$-theory of $R$ in terms of the geometry of the projective embedding of $X$. In particular, if $X$ is a curve then we calculate $K_0(R)$ and $K_1(R)$, and prove that $K_{-1}(R)=\oplus H^1(C,\cO(n))$. If I is a nilpotent ideal in a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra $A$, Goodwillie defined two isomorphisms from $K_*(A,I)$ to negative cyclic homology, $HN_*(A,I)$. One is the relative version of the absolute Chern character, and the other is defined using rational homotopy theory. The question of whether they agree was implicit in Goodwillie's 1986 Annals paper. In this paper, we show that the two isomorphisms agree. Here are three applications. 1.Cathelineau proved that the rational homotopy character is compatible with the $\lambda$-filtration. It follows that the relative Chern character is also compatible with this filtration for nilpotent ideals. 2.This agreement, together with Cathelineau's result, was used by the authors and Haesemeyer to show that the absolute Chern character, from $K(A)$ to $HN(A)$, is compatible with the $\lambda$-filtration for every commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra. The goal of this paper is to present proofs of two results of Markus Rost: the Chain Lemma and the Norm Principle. These are the final steps needed to complete the publishable verification of the Bloch-Kato conjecture, that the norm residue maps are isomorphisms between Milnor K-theory $K_n^M(k)/p$ and etale cohomology $H^n(k,\mu_p^n)$ for every prime p, every n and every field k containing 1/p. Our proofs of these two results are based on Rost's 1998 preprints, his web site and Rost's lectures at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1999-2000 and 2005.

Recent advances in computational techniques for $K$-theory allow us to describe the $K$-theory of toric varieties in terms of the $K$-theory of fields and simple cohomological data., Comment: 17 pages

Let V be a smooth variety defined over the real numbers. Every algebraic vector bundle on V induces a complex vector bundle on the underlying topological space V(C), and the involution coming from complex conjugation makes it a Real vector bundle in the sense of Atiyah. This association leads to a natural map from the algebraic K-theory of V to Atiyah's ``Real K-theory'' of V(C). Passing to finite coefficients Z/m, we show that the maps from K_n(V ; Z/m) to KR ^{-n}(V(C);Z/m) are isomorphisms when n is at least the dimension of V, at least when m is a power of two. Our key descent result is a comparison of the K-theory space of V with the homotopy fixed points (for complex conjugation) of the K-theory space of the complex variety V(C). When V is the affine variety of the d-sphere S, it turns out that KR*(V(C))=KO*(S). In the last year of his life, Bob Thomason reworked the notion of a model category, used to adapt homotopy theory to algebra, and used homotopy ends to affirmatively solve a problem raised by Grothendieck: find a notion of model structure which is inherited by functor categories. In this paper we explain and prove Thomason's results, based on his private notebooks. The first half presents Thomason's ideas about homotopy ends and its generalizations. This material may be of independent interest. Then we define Thomason model categories and give some examples. The usual proof shows that the homotopy category exists. Let C be a coalgebra over a field k and A its dual algebra. The category of C-comodules is equivalent to a category of A-modules. We use this to interpret the cotensor product M \square N of two comodules in terms of the appropriate Hochschild cohomology of the A-bimodule M \otimes N, when A is finite-dimensional, profinite, graded or differential-graded. We propose an Artinian version of Berger's Conjecture for curves, concerning the module of K\"ahler differentials of an algebra. Our version implies Berger's Conjecture in characteristic 0. We establish our Artinian Berger Conjecture in a number of cases, and prove that Berger's Conjecture holds for curve singularities whose conductor ideal contains the cube of a maximal ideal.
