This work proposes a wavelet shrinkage rule under asymmetric LINEX loss function and a mixture of a point mass function at zero and the logistic distribution as prior distribution to the wavelet coefficients in a nonparametric regression model with gaussian error. Underestimation of a significant wavelet coefficient can lead to the bad detection of features of the unknown function, such as peaks, discontinuities, and oscillations. It can also occur under asymmetrically distributed wavelet coefficients. Thus, the proposed rule is suitable when overestimation and underestimation have asymmetric losses. Statistical properties of the rule, such as squared bias, variance, frequentist, and bayesian risks, are obtained. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the rule against standard methods and an application in a real dataset involving infrared spectra is provided.

In this paper, we employ nonlinear diffusion for the purpose of denoising audio signals in order to have this approach also recognized as a powerful tool for audio signal processing. We apply nonlinear diffusion to wavelet coefficients obtained from different filters associated with orthogonal and biorthogonal wavelets. We use wavelet decomposition to keep signal components well-localized in time. We compare denoising results using nonlinear diffusion with wavelet shrinkage for different wavelet filters. To avoid the problems of relative overlap and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of segmented three-dimensional (3D) multimodal medical images, which limit the effect of medical image diagnosis, a 3D multimodal medical image segmentation algorithm using reinforcement learning and big data analytics is proposed. Bayesian maximum a posteriori estimation method and improved wavelet threshold function are used to design wavelet shrinkage algorithm to remove high-frequency signal component noise in wavelet domain. The low-frequency signal component is processed by bilateral filtering and the inverse wavelet transform is used to denoise the 3D multimodal medical image. An end-to-end DRD U-Net model based on deep reinforcement learning is constructed. The feature extraction capacity of denoised image segmentation is increased by changing the convolution layer in the traditional reinforcement learning model to the residual module and introducing the multiscale context feature extraction module. The 3D multimodal medical image segmentation is done using the reward and punishment mechanism in the deep learning reinforcement algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of 3D multimodal medical image segmentation algorithm, the LIDC-IDRI data set, the SCR data set, and the DeepLesion data set are selected as the experimental data set of this article. The results demonstrate that the algorithm's segmentation effect is effective. When the number of iterations is increased to 250, the structural similarity reaches 98%, the SNR is always maintained between 55 and 60 dB, the training loss is modest, relative overlap and accuracy all exceed 95%, and the overall segmentation performance is superior. Readers will understand how deep reinforcement learning and big data analytics test the effectiveness of 3D multimodal medical image segmentation algorithm.

In bayesian wavelet shrinkage, the already proposed priors to wavelet coefficients are assumed to be symmetric around zero. Although this assumption is reasonable in many applications, it is not general. The present paper proposes the use of an asymmetric shrinkage rule based on the discrete mixture of a point mass function at zero and an asymmetric beta distribution as prior to the wavelet coefficients in a non-parametric regression model. Statistical properties such as bias, variance, classical and bayesian risks of the associated asymmetric rule are provided and performances of the proposed rule are obtained in simulation studies involving artificial asymmetric distributed coefficients and the Donoho-Johnstone test functions. Wavelet thresholding (or shrinkage) attempts to remove the noises existing in the signals while preserving inherent pattern characteristics in the reconstruction of true signals. For data-denoising purpose, we present a new wavelet thresholding procedure which employs the step-down testing idea of identifying active contrasts in unreplicated fractional factorial experiments. The proposed method employs bootstrapping methods to a step-down test for thresholding wavelet coefficients. By introducing the concept of a false discovery error rate in testing wavelet coefficients, we shrink the wavelet coefficients with p-values higher than the error rate. The error rate controls the expected proportion of wrongly accepted coefficients among chosen wavelet coefficients. Bootstrap samples are used to approximate the p-value for computational efficiency. We also present some guidelines for selecting the values of hyper-parameters which affect the performance in the step-down thresholding procedure. Based on some common testing signals and an air-conditioner sounds example, the comparison of our proposed procedure with other thresholding methods in the literature is performed. The analytical results show that the proposed procedure has a potential in data-denoising and data-reduction in a variety of signal reconstruction applications.

The present work aims at developing a new approach towards the analysis of the crack path through the access to the information from the infrared (IR) video imaging of the steady fatigue crack growth. We first test some commonly available infrared image filtering techniques, and then we introduce a new robust algorithm to identify the position of the dynamic crack. The proposed procedure performs the local analysis of the temperature distribution around the fatigue crack tip in the 316L stainless steel. The developed MATLAB framework simplifies the routine processing and permits analyzing multiple experiments reasonably easily. Two filtering procedures - Gaussian and wavelet shrinkage - were implemented and applied successively to denoise the IR images. Both filters produce comparable and good quality results. The new algorithm capable of automatically locating the crack tip position from consecutive filtered IR images is proposed. Remarkably successful results are demonstrated with only small errors caused by materials distortion.

Partial Discharge (PD) measurements of large generators are extremely affected and hampered by noise, making the denoising of PD signal an inevitable issue. Wavelet shrinkage is the most commonly employed method for PD signal denoising. The appropriate mother wavelet and decomposition level are critically important for the denoising performance. In consideration of the PD signal characteristics of large generators, a novel wavelet shrinkage scheme for PD signal denoising is presented. In the scheme, a scale dependent wavelet selection method is proposed; the core idea is that the optimum wavelet at each scale is selected as the one maximizing the energy ratio of coefficients beside and inside the range formed by the threshold, which correspond to the signal to be reserved and noise to be removed, respectively. In addition, taking into account the influence of mother wavelet at each scale on the decomposition level, an approach for decomposition level determination is put forward based on the energy composition after decomposition at each scale. The application results on the simulated signals with different SNR obtained by combining the various pulses and measured signal on-site show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Many existing non-local means (NLM) methods either use Euclidean distance to measure the similarity between patches, or compute weight $\omega _{ij}$ only once and keep it unchanged during the subsequent denoising iterations, or use only the structure information of the denoised image to update weight $\omega _{ij}$. These may lead to the limited denoising performance. To address these issues, this paper proposes the non-local adaptive means (NLAM) for image denoising. NLAM treats weight $\omega _{ij}$ as an optimization variable and iteratively updates its value. We then introduce three unbiased distances, namely, pixel–pixel, patch–patch, and coupled unbiased distances. These unbiased distances are more robust to measure the image pixel/patch similarity than Euclidean distance. Using the coupled unbiased distance, we propose the unbiased distance non-local adaptive means (UD-NLAM). Because UD-NLAM uses only a single patch size to compute weight $\omega _{ij}$ , we introduce multipatch UD-NLAM (MUD-NLAM) to adapt different noise levels. To further improve denoising performance, we then propose a new denoising method called MUD-NLAM with wavelet shrinkage (MUD-NLAM-WS). Experimental results show that the proposed NLAM, UD-NLAM, and MUD-NLAM outperform existing NLM methods, and MUD-NLAM-WS achieves a better performance than the state-of-the-art denoising methods. The paper is devoted to the new model for image decomposition, that splits an image $f$ into three components $u+v+\omega$, with $u$ a piecewise-smooth or the ``cartoon'' component, $v$ a texture component and $\omega$ the noise part in variational approach. This decomposition model is in fact incorporates the advantages of two preceding models: the second-order total variation minimization of Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF2), and wavelet shrinkage for oscillatory functions. This decomposition model is presented as an extension of the three components decomposition algorithm of Aujol et al. in \cite{JAC}. It also continues the idea introduced previously by authors in \cite{TPB}, for two components decomposition model. The ROF2 model was first proposed by Bergounioux et al. in \cite{BP}, it is an improved regularization method to overcome the undesirable staircasing effect. The wavelet shrinkage is well combined to separate the oscillating part due to texture from that due to noise. Experimental results validate the proposed algorithm and demonstrate that the image decomposition model presents effective and comparable performance to other state-of-the-art models.

This paper presents an efficient method for recovery of SIMS signals from strongly noised blurred discrete data. This technique is based on Tikhonov-Miller regularization where a priori model of solution is included. The latter is a denoisy signal obtained using the Kalman filter. This is an interesting estimation method, but it can only be used when the system is described precisely. By comparing the results of the proposed technique with those of the literature, our algorithm gives the best results without artifacts and oscillations related to noise and significant improvement of the depth resolution. While, the gain in FWHM is less improved than those obtained by the wavelet technique. Therefore, this new algorithm can push the limits of SIMS measurements towards its ultimate resolution. Abstract Electroencephalogram (EEG) data inevitably contain large amounts of noise, particularly from ocular potentials in tasks with eye movements, known as electro-oculography (EOG) artifact, which has been a crucial issue in brain–computer-interface studies. This time-frequency characteristic has been substantially dealt with in previous proposed denoising algorithms that relied on a consistent assumption based on the single-noise component model. However, the traditional model is not applicable for biomedical signals that consist of multiple signal components, such as weak EEG signals that are easily recognized as noise because of the signal amplitude with respect to the EOG signal. In consideration of the realistic signal contamination, we designed a novel EEG-EOG signal contamination model to quantitatively validate artifact removal from EEGs. We then proposed the two-stage wavelet shrinkage method with the decomposition of the undecimated wavelet transform (UDWT), which is suitable for signal structure. Open-source clinical intracranial EEGs with the hundred dataset in each behavioral condition were introduced to the validation as "true EEG" before the contamination of artificial EOGs. The quality of the reconstructed EEG signal has evaluated in the frequency spectrum, which represents how much the original specific brain-state characteristic can be reconstructed. Numerical analyses demonstrated that the first stage pursued abrupt changes with high amplitudes provided by assumed EOGs, and the second stage provided the EEG frequency spectrum as observed in the original signal. What the performance exceeded the conventional shrinkage suggests that threshold values is required to be set properly depending on individual amplitudes of contaminated bio-signal sources as our proposed method demonstrated. This result focused on the actual amplitude-frequency structure in the polygenetic signal. It not only provided the decomposition performance, but also revealed how bio-signals are mixed together by using a new standard model for robust validation in the EEG-EOG signal contamination. Time series forecasting is widely used in various areas of human knowledge, especially in the planning and strategic direction of companies. The success of this task depends on the forecasting techniques applied. In this paper, a hybrid approach to project time series is suggested. To validate the methodology, a time series already modeled by other authors was chosen, allowing the comparison of results. The proposed methodology includes the following techniques: wavelet shrinkage, wavelet decomposition at level r, and artificial neural networks (ANN). Firstly, a time series to be forecasted is submitted to the proposed wavelet filtering method, which decomposes it to components of trend and linear residue. Then, both are decomposed via level r wavelet decomposition, generating r + 1 Wavelet Components (WCs) for each one; and then each WC is individually modeled by an ANN. Finally, the predictions for all WCs are linearly combined, producing forecasts to the underlying time series. For evaluating purposes, the time series of Canadian Lynx has been used, and all results achieved by the proposed method were better than others in existing literature.

Biometrics authentication is considered as most secure and reliable method to recognise and identify person's identity. Researchers put efforts to find efficient ways to secure and classify the solutions to biometric problems. In this category, fingerprint recognition (FPR) is most widely used biometric trait for person identification/verification. The present work focuses an FPR technique, which uses the grey‐level difference method, discrete wavelet transforms and edge histogram descriptor for fingerprint representation and matching. Wavelet shrinkage used for noise removal in the image. Ridge flow estimation is calculated using the gradient approach. SVM and Hamming distance similarity measures are used for recognition. The experiment result has been tested on the standard 2000–2004 fingerprint verification competition dataset and the accuracy of proposed algorithm was reported to be well above 98%. The X-ray angiogram image denoising is always one of the most popular research in the field of computer vision. While the methods removed the noise, the useful structure (such as peripheral vascular) had also been smoothed, the fundamental reason is that the denoising methods cannot efficiently distinguish structural areas from flat areas. In this paper, we have proposed a spatially adaptive image denoising (SAID) method which contains two steps: spatially adaptive gradient descent (SAGD) image denoising and dual-domain filter (DDF). The SAGD denoising method contains the following parts: first of all, the wavelet shrinkage method is used to estimate redundant information which is composed of the noise and useful structures; secondly, according to the characteristic of second order matrix, a spatially adaptive gradient factor (SAGF) has been constructed to distinguish the structure from flat areas; finally, the SAGF replaces the original gradient factor and then the SAGD image denoising method is formed. To further improve the quality of the SAGD image, the SAGD image is re-denoised by a modified DDF which is guided with a rotationally invariant non-local filter (RINLF) in spatial domain and gets structural details by wavelet shrinkage in frequency domain. The results of simulation experiments verify that the proposed SAID method can get well quantitative and qualitative results which are even superior to those using the state-of-the-art denoising methods. Even more, the fluctuation of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value is very small with a small disturbance of SAGF, which illustrates that our algorithm is more robust than the prior progressive image denoising (PID) method. Moreover, the comparison results of the extensive experiments on clinical X-ray cardiovascular angiogram images further illustrate that our method can yield clearer cardiovascular images which can provide more useful vascular information for clinicians to analyze and diagnose the cardiovascular diseases. Nonparametric regression techniques provide a very effective and simple way of finding structure in data sets without the imposition of a parametric regression model. Wavelet theory has the potential to provide statisticians with powerful new techniques for nonparametric inference. In this paper, we consider the wavelet shrinkage kernel estimator of regression function with a common one-dimensional probability density function. We investigate a new nonparametric curve estimator and convergence ratio of given estimator by using cross-validation method to choice of wavelet threshold when the observations are taken on the regular grid. At the end we used simulation study to examine our proposed estimator. On the basis of wavelet theory, we propose an outlier-detection algorithm for satellite gravity gradiometry by applying a wavelet-shrinkage-de-noising method to some simulation data with white noise and outliers. The result shows that this novel algorithm has a 97% success rate in outlier identification and that it can be efficiently used for pre-processing real satellite gravity gradiometry data.

An interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) phase denoising algorithm using the local sparsity of wavelet coefficients and nonlocal similarity of grouped blocks was developed. From the Bayesian perspective, the double- l1 norm regularization model that enforces the local and nonlocal sparsity constraints was used. Taking advantages of coefficients of the nonlocal similarity between group blocks for the wavelet shrinkage, the proposed algorithm effectively filtered the phase noise. Applying the method to simulated and acquired InSAR data, we obtained satisfactory results. In comparison, the algorithm outperformed several widely-used InSAR phase denoising approaches in terms of the number of residues, root-mean-square errors and other edge preservation indexes. Speckle is a granular disturbance that affects synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Over the last three decades, many methods have been proposed for speckle reduction, where a tradeoff between despeckling and detail preservation is required. As an attempt to balance the performance on both sides, in this paper, we propose a 2-D S transform shrinkage algorithm using adaptive soft threshold for SAR image despeckling. It follows the idea of the wavelet shrinkage algorithm, but extends its major steps to take into account the peculiarities of S transform, i.e., adding adaptivity in the estimation of speckle standard deviation and threshold function, in an optimized computation procedure. Homogeneous and heterogeneous SAR images are used for quantitative evaluations, and both vintage and prevailing algorithms are used for comparison, which demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. Background subtraction without a separate training phase has become a critical task, because a sufficiently long and clean training sequence is usually unavailable, and people generally thirst for immediate detection results from the first frame of a video. Without a training phase, we propose a background subtraction method based on three-dimensional (3D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Static backgrounds with few variations along the time axis are characterized by intensity temporal consistency in the 3D space-time domain and, hence, correspond to low-frequency components in the 3D frequency domain. Enlightened by this, we eliminate low-frequency components that correspond to static backgrounds using the 3D DWT in order to extract moving objects. Owing to the multiscale analysis property of the 3D DWT, the elimination of low-frequency components in sub-bands of the 3D DWT is equivalent to performing a pyramidal 3D filter. This 3D filter brings advantages to our method in reserving the inner parts of detected objects and reducing the ringing around object boundaries. Moreover, we make use of wavelet shrinkage to remove disturbance of intensity temporal consistency and introduce an adaptive threshold based on the entropy of the histogram to obtain optimal detection results. Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) algorithms allow RADAR systems to set detection thresholds and isolated the target from noise or clutter to keeping the false alarm rate at certain level. In this paper a technique added to Improved Switching IS-CFAR system is used to reduce the non-homogenous effect and clutter wall, this technique is called wavelet de-noising. The detection performance of Improving IS-CFAR using wavelet de-noising (I2S-CFAR) processor is compared with the IS-CFAR detectors for homogeneous, non-homogenous and clutter wall. By using wavelet de-noising a gain in signal to noise ratio (SNR) about 2.6dB achieved for the same probability of detection.

In this study, in order to verify the effectiveness of the variable filter band discrete wavelet transform (VFB-DWT) and construction method of the variable-band filter (VBF), a fetal ECG extraction has been carried out and the main results obtained are as follows. The approach to configuration VBF by selecting the frequency band only where the fetal ECG component is present was effective to configure the optimal base sensible signal. The extraction of the fetal ECG was successful by applying the wavelet shrinkage to VFB-DWT, which used the constructed VBF. The information entropy was selected as an evaluation index, and two kinds of ECG signals are used to evaluate the wavelet transform basis between the wavelet packet transform (WPT) and the VFB-DWT. One is a synthesized signal composed of white noise, the maternal ECG and the fetal ECG. The other signal is the real target signal separated by independent component analysis (ICA) and has the mother's body noise, the maternal ECG and the fetal ECG. The result shows that the basis by VBF of the VFB-DWT is better than the basis of the WPT that was chosen by the best basis algorithm (BBA). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The signals acquired in brain-computer interface (BCI) experiments usually involve several complicated sampling, artifact and noise conditions. This mandated the use of several strategies as preprocessing to allow the extraction of meaningful components of the measured signals to be passed along to further processing steps. In spite of the success present preprocessing methods have to improve the reliability of BCI, there is still room for further improvement to boost the performance even more. Method A new preprocessing method for denoising P300-based brain-computer interface data that allows better performance with lower number of channels and blocks is presented. The new denoising technique is based on a modified version of the spectral subtraction denoising and works on each temporal signal channel independently thus offering seamless integration with existing preprocessing and allowing low channel counts to be used. Results The new method is verified using experimental data and compared to the classification results of the same data without denoising and with denoising using present wavelet shrinkage based technique. Enhanced performance in different experiments as quantitatively assessed using classification block accuracy as well as bit rate estimates was confirmed. Conclusion The new preprocessing method based on spectral subtraction denoising offer superior performance to existing methods and has potential for practical utility as a new standard preprocessing block in BCI signal processing. The rich information available in hyperspectral imagery has provided significant opportunities for material classification and identification. Due to the problem of the “curse of dimensionality” (called Hughes phenomenon) posed by the high number of spectral channels along with small amounts of labeled training samples, dimensionality reduction is a necessary preprocessing step for hyperspectral data. Generally, in order to improve the classification accuracy, noise bands generated by various sources (primarily the sensor and the atmosphere) are often manually removed in advance. However, the removal of these bands may discard some important discriminative information, eventually degrading the classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to automatically select bands without manual band removal. Firstly, wavelet shrinkage is applied to denoise the spatial images of the whole data cube. Then affinity propagation, which is a recently proposed feature selection approach, is used to choose representative bands from the noise-reduced data. Experimental results on three real hyperspectral data collected by two different sensors demonstrate that the bands selected by our approach on the whole data (containing noise bands) could achieve higher overall classification accuracies than those by other state-of-the-art feature selection techniques on the manual-band-removal (MBR) data, even better than the bands identified by the proposed approach on the MBR data, indicating that the removed “noise” bands are valuable for hyperspectral classification, which should not be eliminated. The wavelet method is one among the various methods for recovering infinite dimensional objects like curves, densities, images etc. The wavelet techniques are very effective to remove the noise because of its ability to capture the energy of a signal in few energy transform values. The wavelet methods are based on shrinking the wavelet coefficients in the wavelet domain. This paper concentrates on selecting a threshold for wavelet function estimation. A new threshold value is pro-posed to shrink the wavelet coefficients obtained by wavelet decomposition of a noisy image by considering that the sub band coefficients have a gener-alized Gaussian distribution. The proposed threshold value is based on the power of 2 in the size 2J x 2J of the data that can be computed efficiently. The experiment has been conducted on various test images to compare with the established threshold parameters. The result shows that the proposed threshold value removes the noise significantly. Abstract: In Medical diagnosis operations such as feature extraction and object recognition will play the key role. These tasks will become difficult if the images are corrupted with noise. So the development of effective algorithms for noise removal became an important research area in present days. Developing Image denoising algorithms is a difficult task since fine details in a medical image embedding diagnostic information should not be destroyed during noise removal. Many of the wavelet based denoising algorithms use DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) in the decomposition stage are suffering from shift variance and lack of directionality. To overcome this in this paper we are proposing the denoising method which uses dual tree complex wavelet transform to decompose the image and shrinkage operation to eliminate the noise from the noisy image. In the shrinkage step we used semi-soft and stein thresholding operators along with traditional hard and soft thresholding operators and verified the suitability of dual tree complex wavelet transform for the denoising of medical images. The results proved that the denoised image using DTCWT (Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform) have a better balance between smoothness and accuracy than the DWT and less redundant than UDWT (Undecimated Wavelet Transform). Abstract: By substituting an anisotropic diffusion operator for the isotropic Laplace operator in the directed diffusion equation, adding two different coefficients in the two diffusion terms, and choosing the image denoised by soft wavelet shrinkage as the initial approximate image, an improved directed diffusion equation model is proposed. Abstract: Objective: We propose a method for preprocessing event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data that can lead to enhancement of template-free activation detection. The method is based on using a figure of merit to guide the wavelet shrinkage of a given fMRI data set. Background: Several previous studies have demonstrated that in the root-mean-square error setting, wavelet shrinkage can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of fMRI time courses. However, preprocessing fMRI data in the root-mean-square error setting does not necessarily lead to enhancement of template-free activation detection. Motivated by this observation, in this paper, we move to the detection setting and investigate the possibility of using wavelet shrinkage to enhance template-free activation detection of fMRI data. Methodology: The main ingredients of our method are (i) forward wavelet transform of the voxel time courses, (ii) shrinking the resulting wavelet coefficients as directed by an appropriate figure of merit, (iii) inverse wavelet transform of the shrunk data, and (iv) submitting these preprocessed time courses to a given activation detection algorithm. Two figures of merit are developed in the paper, and two other figures of merit adapted from the literature are described. Results: Receiver-operating characteristic analyses with simulated fMRI data showed quantitative evidence that data preprocessing as guided by the figures of merit developed in the paper can yield improved detectability of the template-free measures. We also demonstrate the application of our methodology on an experimental fMRI data set. Conclusions: The proposed method is useful for enhancing template-free activation detection in event-related fMRI data. It is of significant interest to extend the present framework to produce comprehensive, adaptive and fully automated preprocessing of fMRI data optimally suited for subsequent data analysis steps. In this paper, a new denoising method is proposed for hyperspectral data cubes that already have a reasonably good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (such as 600 : 1). Given this level of the SNR, the noise level of the data cubes is relatively low. The conventional image denoising methods are likely to remove the fine features of the data cubes during the denoising process. We propose to decorrelate the image information of hyperspectral data cubes from the noise by using principal component analysis (PCA) and removing the noise in the low-energy PCA output channels. The first PCA output channels contain a majority of the total energy of a data cube, and the rest PCA output channels contain a small amount of energy. It is believed that the low-energy channels also contain a large amount of noise. Removing noise in the low-energy PCA output channels will not harm the fine features of the data cubes. A 2-D bivariate wavelet thresholding method is used to remove the noise for low-energy PCA channels, and a 1-D dual-tree complex wavelet transform denoising method is used to remove the noise of the spectrum of each pixel of the data cube. Abstract: Noise reduction without any prior knowledge of noise or signals is addressed in this study. Compared with conventional filters, wavelet shrinkage can respect this requirement to reduce noise from received signal in wavelet coefficients. However, wavelet threshold depends on an estimate of noise deviation and a weight relating signal''s length cannot be applied in every case. This paper uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) to explore a suitable threshold in a complete solution space, named PSOShrink. A general-purpose objective function which is derived from blind signal separation (BSS) theory is further proposed. In simulation, four benchmarks signals and three degrading degrees are testing; meanwhile, three existing algorithm with state-of-the-art are performed for comparison. PSOShrink can not only recovers source signals from a heavy blurred signal but also remains details of a source signal from a light blurred signal; moreover, it performs outstanding denoising in every simulation case. Since Donoho et al. proposed the wavelet thresholding method for signal denoising, many different denoising approaches have been suggested. In this paper, we present three different wavelet shrinkage methods, namely NeighShrink, NeighSure and NeighLevel. NeighShrink thresholds the wavelet coefficients based on Donoho's universal threshold and the sum of the squares of all the wavelet coefficients within a neighborhood window. NeighSure adopts Stein's unbiased risk estimator (SURE) instead of the universal threshold of NeighShrink so as to obtain the optimal threshold with minimum risk for each subband. NeighLevel uses parent coefficients in a coarser level as well as neighbors in the same subband. We also apply a multiplying factor for the optimal universal threshold in order to get better denoising results. We found that the value of the constant is about the same for different kinds and sizes of images. Experimental results show that our methods give comparatively higher peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), are much more efficient and have less visual artifacts compared to other methods. For regularly spaced one-dimensional data, wavelet shrinkage has proven to be a compelling method for non-parametric function estimation. We create three new multiscale methods that provide wavelet-like transforms both for data arising on graphs and for irregularly spaced spatial data in more than one dimension. The concept of scale still exists within these transforms, but as a continuous quantity rather than dyadic levels. Further, we adapt recent empirical Bayesian shrinkage techniques to enable us to perform multiscale shrinkage for function estimation both on graphs and for irregular spatial data. We demonstrate that our methods perform very well when compared with several other methods for spatial regression for both real and simulated data. Although we concentrate on multiscale shrinkage (regression) we present our new ‘wavelet transforms’ as generic tools intended to be the basis of methods that might benefit from a multiscale representation of data either on graphs or for irregular spatial data. Abstract: We study a class of numerical schemes for nonlinear diffusion filtering that offers insights on the design of novel wavelet shrinkage rules for isotropic and anisotropic image enhancement. These schemes utilise analytical or semi-analytical solutions to dynamical systems that result from space-discrete nonlinear diffusion filtering on minimalistic images with pixels. We call them locally analytic schemes (LAS) and locally semi-analytic schemes (LSAS), respectively. They can be motivated from discrete energy functionals, offer sharp edges due to their locality, are very simple to implement because of their explicit nature, and enjoy unconditional absolute stability. They are applicable to singular nonlinear diffusion filters such as TV flow, to bounded nonlinear diffusion filters of Perona–Malik type, and to tensor-driven anisotropic methods such as edge-enhancing or coherence-enhancing diffusion filtering. The fact that these schemes use processes within -pixel blocks allows to connect them to shift-invariant Haar wavelet shrinkage on a single scale. This interpretation leads to novel shrinkage rules for two- and higher-dimensional images that are scalar-, vector- or tensor-valued. Unlike classical shrinkage strategies they employ a diffusion-inspired coupling of the wavelet channels that guarantees an approximation with an excellent degree of rotation invariance. By extending these schemes from a single scale to a multi-scale setting, we end up at hybrid methods that demonstrate the possibility to realise the effects of the most sophisticated diffusion filters within a fairly simplistic wavelet setting that requires only Haar wavelets in conjunction with coupled shrinkage rules. In this paper, we generalize the iterative regularization method and the inverse scale space method, recently developed for total-variation (TV) based image restoration, to wavelet-based image restoration. This continues our earlier joint work with others where we applied these techniques to variational-based image restoration, obtaining significant improvement over the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi TV-based restoration. Here, we apply these techniques to soft shrinkage and obtain the somewhat surprising result that a) the iterative procedure applied to soft shrinkage gives firm shrinkage and converges to hard shrinkage and b) that these procedures enhance the noise-removal capability both theoretically, in the sense of generalized Bregman distance, and for some examples, experimentally, in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio, leaving less signal in the residual. Wavelet Shrinkage using DWT has been widely used in de-noising although DWT has a translation variance problem. In this study, we solve this problem by using the translation invariant DWT. For this purpose, we propose a new complex wavelet, the Real-Imaginary Spline Wavelet (RI-Spline wavelet). We also propose the Coherent Dual-Tree algorithm for the RI-Spline wavelet and extend it to the 2-Dimensional. Then we apply this translation invariant RI-Spline wavelet for translation invariant de-noising. Experimental results show that our method, when applied to ECG data, the medical image and the textile surface inspection can obtain better de-noising results than that of conventional Wavelet Shrinkage. Nonlinear diffusion filtering and wavelet shrinkage are two successfully applied methods for discontinuity preserving denoising of signals and images. Recently, relations between both methods have been established taking into account wavelet shrinkage at one scale. In this paper, we propose a new explicit scheme for nonlinear diffusion which directly incorporates ideas from multiscale Haar wavelet shrinkage. We prove that our scheme permits larger time steps while preserving convergence to the mean signal value. Numerical examples demonstrate the behavior of our scheme for two and three scales. In this paper, a new noise reduction algorithm is introduced and applied to the problem of denoising hyperspectral imagery. This algorithm resorts to the spectral derivative domain, where the noise level is elevated, and benefits from the dissimilarity of the signal regularity in the spatial and the spectral dimensions of hyperspectral images. The performance of the new algorithm is tested on two different hyperspectral datacubes: an Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) datacube that is acquired in a vegetation-dominated site and a simulated AVIRIS datacube that simulates a geological site.
