To oxidize trace concentrations of organic contaminants under conditions relevant to surface- and groundwater, air-diffusion cathodes were coupled to stainless-steel cathodes that convert atmospheric O2 into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which then was activated to produce hydroxyl radicals (·OH). By separating H2O2 generation from its activation and employing a flow-through electrode consisting of stainless-steel fibers, the two processes could be operated efficiently in a manner that overcame mass-transfer limitations for O2, H2O2, and trace organic contaminants. The flexibility resulting from separate control of the two processes made it possible to avoid both the accumulation of excess H2O2 and the energy losses that take place after H2O2 has been depleted. The decrease in treatment efficacy occurring in the presence of natural organic matter was substantially lower than that typically observed in homogeneous advanced oxidation processes. Experiments conducted with ionized and neutral compounds indicated that electrostatic repulsion prevented negatively charged ·OH scavengers from interfering with the oxidation of neutral contaminants. Energy consumption by the dual-cathode system was lower than values reported for other technologies intended for small-scale drinking water treatment systems. The coordinated operation of these two cathodes has the potential to provide a practical, inexpensive way for point-of-use drinking water treatment.

Dichloramine (NHCl2) naturally exists in reverse osmosis (RO) permeate due to its application as an antifouling chemical in membrane-based potable reuse treatment. This study investigated mechanisms of background NHCl2 hydrolysis associated with the generation of oxidative radical species in RO permeate, established a kinetic model to predict the oxidative capacity, and examined its removal efficiency on trace organic contaminants in potable reuse. Results showed that NHCl2 hydrolysis generated transient peroxynitrite (ONOO-) and subsequently dissociated into hydroxyl radical (HO•). The maximal HO• exposure was observed at an RO permeate pH of 8.4, higher than that from typical ultraviolet (UV)-based advanced oxidation processes. The HO• exposure during NHCl2 hydrolysis also peaked at a NH2Cl-to-NHCl2 molar ratio of 1:1. The oxidative capacity rapidly degraded 1,4-dioxane, carbamazepine, atenolol, and sulfamethoxazole in RO permeate. Furthermore, background elevated carbonate in fresh RO permeate can convert HO• to carbonate radical (CO3•-). Aeration of the RO permeate removed total carbonate, significantly increased HO• exposure, and enhanced the degradation kinetics of trace organic contaminants. The kinetic model of NHCl2 hydrolysis predicted well the degradation of contaminants in RO permeate. This study provides new mechanistic insights into NHCl2 hydrolysis that contributes to the oxidative degradation of trace organic contaminants in potable reuse systems.

UNLABELLED: Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are indispensable biotechnology facilities for modern cities and play an essential role in modern urban infrastructure by employing microorganisms to remove pollutants in wastewater, thus protecting public health and the environment. This study conducted a 13-month bacterial community survey of six full-scale WWTPs in Hong Kong with samples of influent, activated sludge (AS), and effluent to explore their synchronism and asynchronism of bacterial community. Besides, we compared AS results of six Hong Kong WWTPs with data from 1,186 AS amplicon data in 269 global WWTPs and a 9-year metagenomic sequencing survey of a Hong Kong WWTP. Our results showed the compositions of bacterial communities varied and the bacterial community structure of AS had obvious differences across Hong Kong WWTPs. The co-occurrence analysis identified 40 pairs of relationships that existed among Hong Kong WWTPs to show solid associations between two species and stochastic processes took large proportions for the bacterial community assembly of six WWTPs. The abundance and distribution of the functional bacteria in worldwide and Hong Kong WWTPs were examined and compared, and we found that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria had more diversity than nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Besides, Hong Kong WWTPs could make great contributions to the genome mining of microbial dark matter in the global wanted list. Operational parameters had important effects on OTUs abundance, such as the temperature to the genera of Tetrasphaera, Gordonia and Nitrospira. All these results obtained from this study can deepen our understanding of the microbial ecology in WWTPs and provide foundations for further studies. IMPORTANCE: Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are an indispensable component of modern cities, as they can remove pollutants in wastewater to prevent anthropogenic activities. Activated sludge (AS) is a fundamental wastewater treatment process and it harbors a highly complex microbial community that forms the main components and contains functional groups. Unveiling who is there is a long-term goal of the research on AS microbiology. High-throughput sequencing provides insights into the inventory diversity of microbial communities to an unprecedented level of detail. At present, the analysis of communities in WWTPs usually comes from a specific WWTP and lacks comparisons and verification among different WWTPs. The wide-scale and long-term sampling project and research in this study could help us evaluate the AS community more accurately to find the similarities and different results for different WWTPs in Hong Kong and other regions of the world.

One of the most effective ways to reduce environmental pollution on the earth's surface is the catalytic decomposition method. In this paper, the co-precipitation method was successfully used to synthesize pure and Sm (3, 5, and 7 wt%) doped WO 3 nanoparticles by various weight percentage. The structural and optical properties of prepared NPs were characterized using XRD, SEM, EDS, HR-TEM, XPS, FTIR and UV–Vis. From XRD analysis confirmed the monoclinic phase of WO 3 as well as the substitutional incorporation of Sm in WO 3 lattice. The surface morphology of the obtained samples was studied by SEM and HR-TEM, which shows nanoplate morphology. EDS and XPS analysis element confirmation for W, O and Sm. The systematic decrease of bandgap (E g) from 2.86 to 2.82 eV with increasing Sm doping concentration from 0 to 7 wt% was strong evidenced from UV–Vis analysis. Furthermore, the extensive surface area of the active CV curves and EIS indicating the good to improve photocatalytic performance and photo-generated carriers' separation efficiency. The photodegradation of Methyl Blue (MB) aqueous solution in 120 min under the visible light irradiation is used to assess the photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples. Among the four samples, 7 wt% doped one shows higher degradation efficiency of 94.2 %. Finally, the antibacterial properties of Sm:WO 3 (0, 3, 5 and 7 wt%) NPs against Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 8708) were investigated with the disc diffusion method and zone of inhibition in mm were recorded. Based on the above analysis, the superior antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (18 mm) is rather obtained with Sm:WO 3 (7 wt%) sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This investigation is motivated by the surge of interest in materials, combining high spontaneous magnetization and pseudocapacitance at room temperature. Ferrimagnetic MnFe 2 O 4 offers benefits of high magnetization. However, the non-pseudocapacitive behavior, low capacitance and high resistance of MnFe 2 O 4 are limiting factors for its applications in magnetic pseudocapacitive devices. This investigation demonstrates that nearly ideal pseudocapacitive behavior can be achieved for MnFe 2 O 4 electrodes in Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. High pseudocapacitance is observed in positive and negative potential ranges and two different charging mechanisms are proposed. High capacitance is achieved at a low impedance. The ability to achieve comparable and high areal capacitances in the positive and negative potential ranges facilitates the fabrication of a symmetric pseudocapacitive device, containing ferrimagnetic MnFe 2 O 4 as cathode and anode material for operation in enlarged voltage window of 1.6 V. The symmetric device shows capacitance of 0.92 F cm−2 at a current density of 3 mA cm−2. The individual electrodes and device show good cycling stability. The approach is based on the use of murexide and gallocyanine as redox-active dispersants and charge transfer mediators. The analysis of testing results provides an insight into the influence of chemical structure, charge and redox properties of the dispersants on the capacitive behavior. The ability to fabricate a pseudocapacitive device, containing two ferrimagnetic electrodes is promising for energy storage, water purification and novel applications based on magnetocapacitive effects. Background: Antiviral drugs show significant efficacy in non-severe COVID-19 cases, yet there remains a subset of moderate COVID-19 patients whose pneumonia continues to progress post a complete course of treatment. Plasma-activated water (PAW) possesses anti-SARS-CoV-2 properties. To explore the potential of PAW in improving pneumonia in COVID-19 patients following antiviral treatment failure, we conducted this study. Methods: This was a randomized, controlled trial. Moderate COVID-19 patients with antiviral treatment failure were randomly assigned to the experimental group or the control group. They inhaled nebulized PAW or saline respectively. This was done twice daily for four consecutive days. We assessed improvement in chest CT on day 5, the rate of symptom resolution within 10 days, and safety. Results: A total of 23 participants were included, with 11 receiving PAW and 12 receiving saline. The baseline characteristics of both groups were comparable. The experimental group showed a higher improvement rate in chest CT on day 5 (81.8% vs. 33.3%, p = 0.036). The cumulative disappearance rate of cough within 10 days was higher in the experimental group. Within 28 days, 4 patients in each group progressed to severe illness, and no patients died. No adverse reactions were reported from inhaling nebulized PAW. Conclusion: This pilot trial preliminarily confirmed that nebulized inhalation of PAW can alleviate pneumonia in moderate COVID-19 patients with antiviral treatment failure, with no adverse reactions observed. MgO nanoparticles have good As-adsorption capacity in treating As-contaminated wastewater but suffer from high production cost. In this study, instead of using pre-formed MgO nanoparticles, we found that in-situ formed Mg(OH)2 from MgCl2 and NaOH reaction exhibited super high arsenate (As(V)) removal efficiency. Only 1.5 mmol/L of in-situ formed Mg(OH)2 could remove more than 95% As(V) within 10 min to make the As contaminated water (10 mg-As(V)/L) meet the municipal wastewater treatment standard, whereas MgO nanoparticles failed. The Mg-As sludge has an amorphous crystal structure while no Mg(OH)2 phase could be observed. As(V) existed uniformly within the sludge which was confirmed by elemental mapping. A precipitation-adsorption-coagulation mechanism might exist, which could relieve the restriction of limited surface area of solid MgO adsorbents. This study not only reveals an applicable method for efficient removal of trace level As(V) from water but also implies the huge potential of in-situ formed adsorbents in water treatment. Low-cost and green preparation of efficient sorbents is critical to the removal of organic contaminants during water treatment. In this study, the co-pyrolysis of macroalgae and oyster shell was designed to synthesize nitrogen-doped porous biochars for sorption removal of atrazine from water. Oyster shell played a significant role in opening pores in macroalgae-derived biochars, resulting in the surface area of the macroalgae (Enteromorpha prolifera and Ulva lactuca) and oyster shell co-pyrolyzed carbonaceous as high as 1501.80 m2 g−1 and 1067.18 m2 g−1, the pore volume reached 1.04 cm3 g−1 and 0.93 cm3 g−1, and O/C decreased to 0.09 and 0.08, respectively. The sorption capacity of atrazine to nitrogen-doped porous biochars (the Enteromorpha prolifera, Ulva lactuca and oyster shell co-pyrolyzed carbonaceous) reached 312.06 mg g−1 and 340.52 mg g−1. Pore-filling, hydrogen bonding, π-π or p-π stacking and electrostatic interaction dominated the multilayer sorption process. Moreover, the nitrogen-doped porous biochars showed great performance in cyclic reusability, and the Enteromorpha prolifera, Ulva lactuca and oyster shell co-pyrolyzed carbonaceous sorption capacity still reached 246.13 mg g−1 and 255.97 mg g−1, respectively. Thus, this study suggested that it is feasible and efficient to remove organic contaminants with the nitrogen-doped porous biochars co-pyrolyzed from macroalgae and oyster shell, providing a potential green resource utilization of aquatic wastes for environmental remediation. In the field of global water purification, the issue of marine oil spills represents a significant challenge. The use of phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) as sorbent materials in oil spill remediation is a promising solution due to their environmental adaptability and high absorption capacity. However, there are limited reports on PSOGs that can be used in powder form for rapid phase-selective gelation of crude oils. In this context, the development of innovative dicholesteryl derivatives as low-molecular-weight organogelators (LMOGs) offers a promising solution in powder form. These gelators are synthesized through a one-pot multi-component reaction as green synthesis method, which ensures high purity and eliminates the need for harsh conditions. The incorporation of cholesterol into the gelator structure demonstrate environmental adaptability. The exceptional sorption capacity was attributed to the structured 2D/3D networks observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrophobic properties of these gelators, as evidenced by a water contact angle of 118 degrees, enable them to efficiently gel various organic solvents at low concentrations (1% w/v) at ambient temperatures, without the need for heating–cooling cycles or co-solvents. The eco-friendly nature and efficient oil–water separation capabilities of these gelators in powder form represent a significant advancement in global water purification efforts. The rise in the world's population has led to an amplified need for fundamental requirements such as healthcare, shelter, and water. At the same time, human practices like agriculture, mining, and deforestation have resulted in challenges related to environmental sustainability and the contamination of water resources. As a result, access to safe drinking water has become a major challenge worldwide, and controlling water pollution is crucial. Several water treatment methods, including adsorption, nanotechnology, and membrane technology, have been developed to mitigate health and environmental impacts. However, many of these methods are too expensive, especially for people living in low-income countries. Additionally, some of the technologies are not very effective at removing pollutants, which exacerbates the problem. The physical, chemical, and biological approaches for treating water are categorized in this review, along with the benefits and drawbacks of each approach. Given that the adsorption method is thought to be one of the more economical and environmentally friendly techniques to treat water, this review recommends that in order to increase the efficacy of the adsorbents, a comprehensive investigation into the exact operation of the adsorbents at the cellular and molecular levels be conducted. Peracetic acid (PAA) is efficient for disinfection processes in environmental sanitation and in the presence of transition metals its oxidative performance is enhanced. Thus, the present study aim evaluated the influence of Fe3+ ions during the inactivation process of Escherichia coli and Total Coliforms (TC). The process PAA + Fe3+ ions were also evaluated in relation to the disinfection kinetics, the participation of H2O2 and the influence of the organic load of the treated water. The tests showed an inactivation efficient of 0.5 to 0.9 log in relation to E. coli and 1.3 to 1.5 logs for TC in the concentrations evaluated and complete inactivation of E. coli was achieved within 15 min for both PAA and PAA/Fe3+ There is no damage to the disinfection process in the presence of Fe3+ ions, however, the decomposition of PAA is favored. In this sense, the formation of radicals can justify the maintenance of disinfection efficiency. The decay constants were close both microorganisms: for E. coli with PAA and PAA/Fe3+were 0.0323 and 0.0476 and for TC were 0.0637 and 0.0667. The values of R2 were above 0.95. Computer simulations of peptidoglycans that make up the bacterial cell wall showed that radicals preferentially attacked the carbons from the rings that composes the cell wall peptidoglycan of gram-negative bacteria allowing to break the structure during the disinfection process. This work examines how graphene-based nanoparticles can be integrated into membranes to improve the effectiveness of water treatment in osmotic desalination processes. This is important since sustainable practices can help address the world's water scarcity. Water treatment, desalination, and resource recovery are areas where osmotic desalination shows great potential. However, membrane performance constraints frequently impede its efficacy. High mechanical strength, superior hydrophilicity, and the ability to lessen internal concentration polarisation are just a few of the remarkable qualities that make graphene-based nanoparticles stand out. In order to increase the membranes' overall functionality, these nanoparticles were created and added to them. Comparing the study to conventional membranes, the main goals were to increase water flux rates and salt ion rejection capacities. It was shown by experimental results that the membranes strengthened with graphene-based nanoparticles performed better. They outperformed conventional membranes in terms of water flow growth and salt ion rejection rates improvement. In order to advance osmotic desalination technologies towards more effective and sustainable water treatment options, this study highlights the revolutionary potential of graphene-based nanoparticles. Graphene-based nanoparticles provide an attractive option for tackling major water issues worldwide by improving membrane characteristics that are essential for osmotic desalination, such as permeability and selectivity. Water management techniques that are environmentally sustainable are supported by their integration into membranes, which also enhances performance metrics. This study opens the door for creative approaches to resource recovery and water treatment by providing important insights into the creation of cutting-edge materials specifically designed for osmotic desalination applications. Wastewaters consist of organic pollutants that have environmental concerns. Wastewaters are treated by different methods, but efficient, low-cost, and sustainable techniques still need to be developed. Algae-based water pollution remediation techniques are considered to be sustainable approaches. This review exclusively discusses the facets of macro and microalgae in the treatment of organic toxicants. The current trends of algae-mediated water treatments have been discussed under adsorption and degradation methods. A focus on algae fuel cell, algae mediated activation of oxidizing agents, Fenton-like reactions, and photocatalysis was given. The need of algae-based adsorptive and catalytic materials was mentioned. The role of algae in the synthesis of catalysts which were employed in pollutant removal methods was also explained. The integrated algae-mediated water treatment techniques were also highlighted. The toxicant removal performances of different algae-based materials in the water medium were summarized. The conclusion and future prospects derived from the literature survey were described. Optimizing the fermentation process of microorganisms with exceptional bioflocculant-producing capabilities is crucial for the production of bioflocculants. The application of bioflocculants to various pollutants highlights their significant advantages in water treatment. Therefore, the culture conditions of Bacillus subtilis 35A with exceptional bioflocculant-producing capabilities were optimized. The bioflocculant (MBF) was obtained by alcohol percipitation from the fermentation supernatant, and its physicochemical properties were analyzed to explore its application in the treatment of dyes, heavy metal ions, and organic wastewater. The results indicate that, using cyclodextrin and yeast extract as carbon and nitrogen sources, after 48 h of fermentation at the initial pH, the bioflocculant (MBF-35A) yielded 10.47 g/L with a flocculation rate of 96.57% for kaolin suspension. The chemical analysis demonstrated that MBF- 35A is mainly composed of polysaccharide (81.74%) and protein (16.42%). FITR and XPS analysis indicated that MBF-35A mainly contains major elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, with functional groups (-OH, C-O, C-H, and C-O-C) that are beneficial for flocculation. MBF-35A exhibited a dye decolorization efficiency exceeding 95% and removed 41.05 and 48.93% of Cr6+ and Cu2+ ions, respectively. In meat wastewater treatment, the effective removal rates of ammonia nitrogen (26.87%), COD (51.16%), total nitrogen (37.76%), and total phosphorus (55.81%) highlight its potential in organic waste treatment. In brief, not only does MBF-35A exhibit efficient production and excellent flocculation performance as a bioflocculant, but it also shows significant biological and environmental benefits in dye, heavy metal ions, and organic wastewater treatment. This study addresses the critical need for efficient and sustainable methods to tackle organic pollutants and microbial contamination in water. The present work aim was to investigate the potential of multi-structured zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) for the combined photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and antimicrobial activity. A unique fusion of precipitation-cum-hydrothermal approaches was precisely employed to synthesize the ZnO NPs, resulting in remarkable outcomes. The synthesized CTAB/ZnO NPs demonstrated exceptional properties: they were multi-structured and crystalline with a size of 40 nm and possessed a narrow band gap energy of 2.82 eV, enhancing light absorption for photocatalysis. These nanoparticles achieved an impressive degradation efficiency of 91.75% for Reactive Blue-81 dye within 105 min under UV irradiation. Furthermore, their photocatalytic performance metrics were outstanding, including a quantum yield of 1.73 × 10–4 Φ, a kinetic reaction rate of 3.89 × 102 µmol g–1 h–1, a space–time yield of 8.64 × 10–6 molecules photon–1 mg–1, and a figure-of-merit of 1.03 × 10–9 mol L J–1 g–1 h–1. Notably, the energy consumption was low at 1.73 × 10–4 J mol–1, compared to other systems. Additionally, the ZnO NPs exhibited effective antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. This research underscores the potential of tailored ZnO NPs as a versatile solution for addressing both organic pollution and microbial contamination in water treatment processes. Heavy metal ions can be introduced into the water through several point and non-point sources including leather industry, coal mining, agriculture activity and domestic waste. Regrettably, these toxic heavy metals may pose a threat to both humans and animals, particularly when they infiltrate water and soil. Heavy metal poisoning can lead to many health complications, such as liver and renal dysfunction, dermatological difficulties, and potentially even malignancies. To mitigate the risk of heavy metal ion exposure to humans and animals, it is imperative to extract them from places that have been polluted. Several conventional methods such as ion exchange, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, membrane filtration and chemical precipitation have been used for the removal of heavy metal ions. However, these methods have high operation costs and generate secondary pollutants during water treatment. Biosorption is an alternative approach to eliminating heavy metals from water that involves employing eco-friendly and cost-effective biomass. This review is focused on the heavy metal ions contamination in the water, biosorption methods for heavy metal removal and mathematical modeling to explain the behaviour of heavy metal adsorption. Effluent reuse is a rapidly growing field of research where assessing the quality of effluent is one of the focus areas. This research examines the viability of using wastewater in agriculture by testing an integrated Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor with a trickling filter (TF) system during the dry season. Compliance monitoring was conducted for 30 days from May 11 to June 9 of 2021. Samples were collected, handled, and analyzed following standard wastewater analysis procedures for biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), cations, anions, heavy metals, E. coli, and helminth egg. The UASB-TF system in Kality wastewater treatment performed well in removing COD, BOD5, and TSS with average removal rates of 80.5%, 82.9%, and 80.9%, respectively, compared well with similar treatment configurations. The effluent quality satisfied the national inland discharge limit with a residual concentration of 125.1 mg/L for COD, 61.7 mg/L for BOD5 and 85.8 mg/L for TSS. On the other hand, high concentrations of chromium, nitrate-nitrogen, and helminth egg count restricted effluent reuse for agricultural purposes due to high health risks and environmental contamination. We found out that discharging industrial sewage into the domestic sewer network could inhibit microbial growth and affect the biological treatment processes. Furthermore, adopting integrated treatment systems in developing countries might face operational challenges and monitoring nitrate, helminth egg, and heavy metals would help provide timely operational feedback. [Display omitted] Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides/nitrides, MXenes (in particular Ti 3 C 2 T x), and three-dimensional (3D) structures such as polymeric hydrogels or aerogels, are promising families of materials, each in their own right, with advantageous properties for applications in biomedicine, water treatment, electronic devices, and energy. Combination of MXenes with hydro- or aerogels may further improve their individual properties and impart new characteristics. Potentially, it can also significantly improve the chemical stability of MXenes, which is currently one of the main limiting factors for their widespread use. In this paper, we review some representative fabrication techniques and properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/3D hydrogel and aerogel composites, as well as selected applications of these composites for energy storage and harvesting, biology and medicine, water treatment, and EMI shielding. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of creating a prototype of a self-sufficient houseboat that is capable of prolonged independence from power grids and freshwater sources. In this design, electricity demand is met by a photovoltaic installation, and the energy is stored in batteries. Fresh water for living needs may be obtained from many sources, depending on the environmental conditions, such as through purifying outboard water, desalinating seawater, and collecting and storing rainwater. No waste production of the vessel can be achieved in two ways: waste can be treated and discharged into a body of water, or processed into fertiliser for later use in agriculture. Four possible locations were analysed: Rome, Lisbon, Gdańsk and Stockholm. The findings reveal that the length of time for which the unit is autonomous and emission-free depends on the geographical location of the facility. High-pressure black water angle valves are essential equipment of black water flash treatment systems in the coal gasification process, and they usually suffer from a high risk of erosion wear failure. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), combined with the discrete particle method (DPM) and the volume of fluid (VOF) method, was used to study the flow characteristics and erosion wear phenomenon in high-pressure black water angle valves under different valve cavity radii and opening angles. In particular, a new parameter, the drift index, was introduced to analyze the bias flow phenomenon in the throttling zone. With the increase in valve cavity radius, the drift index first decreases and then increases, and the influence of the valve cavity radius gradually weakens with the increase in the valve opening. It was found that, with the increase in valve cavity radius, the average erosion wear rate of the valve body decreases first and then increases. When the valve cavity radius was 132 mm, the average erosion wear rate of the valve body was the smallest. Therefore, the optimization of the valve cavity radius selection value can reduce the erosion wear damage of the high-pressure black water angle valve and increase its operational dependability. Water pollution caused by heavy metal ions (HMI) and dyes is a global issue challenging current solutions. Membrane filtration shows promise, yet faces limitations like fouling and low flux. This study proposes a new membrane by incorporating graphene oxide zinc oxide (GO‐ZnO) nanocomposites into a polyethersulfone (PES) matrix to overcome these challenges. The synthesized membrane exhibits strong antimicrobial activity, crucial for water treatment, and high efficiency in removing HMIs (Cu2+ and Ni2+) and dyes (BB9 and EBT) from water samples and industrial wastewater. Mineral scales of calcite are common in the oil field and pose a serious integrity problem in the wellbore, flow lines, and equipment. It is also a challenge faced by industries such as refineries and power plants. Scale deposition is a complex process depending on various factors such as concentration of scaling species, temperature, pH, and flow rates. Deterministic models are used to predict the scale formation from the level of supersaturation of the scaling species in the water at the operating conditions. However, due to the complexity of the interaction of variables affecting the scaling and inhibition by chemicals, it is suitable to be represented by statistical models. This work focused on applying statistical analysis techniques such as response surface methodology to understand the effect of different operating parameters on the inhibition efficiency of maleic acid-acrylamide copolymer on CaCO3 scales. The copolymer was synthesized, and its inhibition efficiency on the calcite scale was tested using static jar tests at different pH, temperature, and inhibitor concentrations. The effect of the critical parameters on the inhibition efficiency was analyzed using the statistical technique of Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The design of experiments (DoE) was created using a Box-Behnken design with three levels for each factor. The linear and the quadratic effects of the factors were studied and the interaction effects were analyzed using analyses of variance (ANOVA) and RSM. A desirability function was used to optimize the performance for the combination of the variables. The analysis showed that the linear effect of the parameters had the highest impact on the inhibition efficiency. Significant interaction effects were also identified between the operating variables. The metropolis of Kolkata stands uniquely positioned to implement a natural sewage treatment paradigm through the utilization of waste stabilization ponds, specifically within the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW). These shallow oxidation ponds harness solar irradiation and algae bacteria symbiotic processes to effectively treat incoming sewage. Concurrently, nutrient-rich effluents are assimilated through fish production, converting available nutrients into protein--a hallmark of nature-based treatment. A portion of raw sewage is used to cultivate a chunk of vegetables before treatment in fish ponds, and the reclaimed water after treatment is used for vegetable and paddy cultivation downstream. This investigation explains the delineation of a sewage flow system to EKW, a Ramsar-designated site. Substantively, it offers quantitative insights into the sewage volumes and quality undergoing treatment. The sewage flow is higher in the winter months (909.07 MLD) compared to the summer months (709.34 MLD). In general, the sewage from the Kolkata city flowing to the EKW is moderately polluted. Extensive scrutiny of sewage from pond inlets and outlets serves as a quantitative metric for evaluating treatment efficacy. EKW efficiently treats the sewage, demonstrating 59.1% Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) removal and a 99.28% reduction in fecal coliform. The natural treatment system excels in removing ammoniacal nitrogen (80.38%) and phosphate (90%). The treated water's quality along the EKW boundary, culminating at the Kulti Gong River discharge point, was systematically assessed. Analytical findings indicate that all measured concentrations in the treated water adhere to prescribed inland surface water discharge standards prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board, India, barring a marginal elevation in BOD during winter. Evidently, the EKW system adeptly manages substantial sewage volumes, fostering efficient treatment while concurrently facilitating resource recovery through fish production, yielding economic dividends. Locally available apricot seed shell as agro-waste was used for the preparation of adsorbents. The biochar was prepared at 370°C via pyrolysis and 80 mesh particle sizes were modified by 1N HCl. Nitrate adsorption and effect of co-ions from aqueous solution were studied under batch model using apricot seed shell powder (ASSP), apricot seed shell biochar (ASSB), and activated apricot seed shell biochar (AASSB). FTIR and pHPZC measurements were used to characterize the adsorbents. Based on the experimental findings, the optimum conditions follow pH 2, 0.3g dosage, initial concentration of 50 mg.L-1, and contact time of 90 min. The three forms of adsorbent exhibited good adsorption for nitrate. However, the maximum percentage removal of nitrate ions from the aqueous solution followed the order AASSB>ASSB>ASSP. The adsorption kinetic of nitrate ion was best fitted by pseudo 2nd order, and the parameters of adsorption isotherms elucidated favorable and improved sorption. Bengawan Solo River water is a source of drinking water and raw materials for the government of Surakarta city, but the water has been mixed with domestic, industrial, and agricultural wastes. The waste contains estradiol-17 derived from urine and feces, both from livestock and humans as well as industries around the sub-watershed Bengawan Solo River. The content of estradiol-17 in the Bengawan Solo sub-watershed is quite high. This study is the first conducted in Bengawan Solo River to look at natural estrogens that are very rarely studied in the environment, which are likely could cause several health effects in humans and wildlife due to their relatively strong estrogenic potential and high levels in wastewater and river water. Therefore, research on the elimination of these compounds using effective, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance technologies for water treatment such as phytoremediation is highly expected. The purposes of this study were to identify estradiol, to measure the estradiol levels through HPLC tests as well as to test the effectiveness of phytoremediation with Portulaca plant as biological agents. The results show that the water of Bengawan Solo River contained estradiol substances ranging from 3.88 ppm to 5.76 ppm. The dye effluents released from the textile and printing industries contain strong colorants, inorganic salts, and other toxic compounds. The conventional coagulation technique of dye effluent treatment is plagued with issues of low removal rate of color, generation of large quantities of sludge, and toxic end-products. Recently electrocoagulation technique gained immense attention due to its high efficiency. This technique involves the dissolution of the sacrificial anodes to provide an active metal hydroxide as a strong coagulant that destabilizes the pollutants and removes them by precipitation or flocculation. This study is about the efficiency of the electrocoagulation process using titanium coated - aluminum and mild steel electrodes to treat industrial dye wastewater. Effects of parameters such as current density & initial dye concentration were investigated. It was observed that, for the same current density, electrode consumption was higher with TiO2/Al electrode than with mild steel electrode, resulting in more color removal efficiency (CRE) using TiO2/Al electrode. The settling rate of the flocs was higher in the rector having TiO2/Al electrode at the 100 mL with current density (2.5 mL.min-1 to 5.3 mL.min-1), while in the reactor with mild steel electrode, the settling rate was very less. The results showed that dye removal was 95.11% and 92.1% for mild steel and titanium-coated electrodes, respectively. It was observed that 50 % of Aluminum was removed from the treated effluent after the final stage of filtration. Based on the multicriteria analysis to identify the optimum operational parameters to be applied at the field level, it was observed that maximum CRE may be obtained with TiO2/Al electrode and the applied current of 1 Amps with a flow rate of 100 mL.min-1. The current investigation delves into the structural, morphological, optical, and magnetic properties of α-Fe2O3, MgO, and an α-Fe2O3/MgO nanocomposite, synthesized via an innovative hydrothermal methodology, offering novel insights into their potential application in the purification of dye-contaminated water. Through meticulous analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns authenticate the successful formation of the nanocomposite, while high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveals nanocrystalline particles with dimensions ranging from 19 nm to 30 nm. A noteworthy observation is the demonstration of a tunable optical bandgap, spanning from 2.20 eV to 3.08 eV, via UV–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, indicative of the integration of wide-bandgap semiconductors, a key feature essential for efficient photocatalytic activity. Evaluation of the magnetic properties using vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) shows a discernible reduction in magnetization in the nanocomposite, attributed to the incorporation of nonmagnetic MgO into the magnetic α-Fe2O3 matrix, thereby revealing unprecedented magnetic modulation. Particularly striking is the exceptional photocatalytic performance of the α-Fe2O3/MgO nanocomposite, achieving 84% degradation of rose Bengal (RB) dye under UV light exposure within a remarkably brief 75-min period. This pronounced enhancement in photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the reduced recombination probability of photo-induced carriers, suggesting effective charge transfer within the nanocomposite, thus elucidating its suitability for efficient wastewater treatment, particularly in the domain of dye removal. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) represent an interesting inorganic material widely utilized across various fields including sensing, antimicrobial applications, optical coatings, water purification, fuel additives, absorbents, and catalysis, owing to their exceptional broad energy band gap, surface affinity, and strong chemical and thermal durability. In this investigation, MgO NPs were successfully synthesized through a green approach employing fruit extract from the gingerbread tree (Hyphaene thebaica). Analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed their agglomerated quasi-spherical shape with a size range of 20–60 nm. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern exhibited prominent peaks at planes (200) and (220), indicating the high crystallinity of MgO NPs with a crystallite size of 32.6 ± 5 nm while Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis highlighted the composition comprises 40.47% Magnesium and 48.64% Oxygen by weight. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed characteristic Mg-O bonds through peaks at 560 cm−1 and 866 cm−1, while Raman spectroscopy affirmed the cubic structure of MgO. Subsequently, the photocatalytic performance of MgO NPs under visible light irradiation was evaluated. Remarkably, the addition of 1 g/L of MgO nano-catalyst resulted in a degradation efficiency of 98% after 110 min on methylene blue dye, showcasing the high catalytic activity of MgO NPs. Objective: Exploration of the efficacy of treating large indirect inguinal hernias in infants and young children using umbilical double-port laparoscopy combined with extraperitoneal water injection. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 165 cases of primary unilateral large indirect inguinal hernias in infants and young children treated at our hospital from May 2018 to May 2023. Among them, 90 cases underwent umbilical double-port laparoscopic surgery combined with extraperitoneal water injection and high ligation of the hernia sac (Double-Port Group), and another 75 cases underwent conventional three-port laparoscopic high ligation of the hernia sac (Three-Port Group). The two groups were compared in terms of operation time, postoperative pain scores at 24 hours, hospital stay, incision complications, and recurrence within one year after surgery. Results: Both groups successfully completed the surgery without any intraoperative complications. The pain score at 24 hours postoperatively was lower in the Double-Port Group compared to the Three-Port Group, and there was no statistically significant difference in operation time, hospital stay, and incision complications between the two groups (P > 0.05). Both groups were followed up for one year postoperatively; the Three-Port Group had one recurrence that was cured after further treatment, while there were no recurrences in the Double-Port Group. Conclusion: Umbilical double-port laparoscopy combined with extraperitoneal water injection for the treatment of large indirect inguinal hernias in infants and young children has the advantages of being safe and reliable, with concealed and aesthetic incisions, and rapid recovery. Owing to their capability to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under solar irradiation, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with pre-designable structure and unique architectures show great potentials for water purification. However, the sluggish charge separation, inefficient oxygen activation and poor structure stability in COFs restrict their practical applications to decontaminate water. Herein, via a facile one-pot synthetic strategy, we show the direct conversion of reversible imine linkage into rigid thiazole linkage can adjust the π-conjugation and local charge polarization of skeleton to boost the exciton dissociation on COFs. The rigid linkage can also improve the robustness of skeleton and the stability of COFs during the consecutive utilization process. More importantly, the thiazole linkage in COFs with optimal C 2p states (COF-S) effectively increases the activities of neighboring benzene unit to directly modulate the O2-adsorption energy barrier and improve the ROS production efficiency, resulting in the excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency of seven toxic emerging contaminants (e.g. degrading ~99% of 5 mg L−1 paracetamol in only 7 min) and effective bacterial/algal inactivation performance. Besides, COF-S can be immobilized in continuous-flow reactor and in enlarged reactor to efficiently eliminate pollutants under natural sunlight irradiation, demonstrating the feasibility for practical application. Linking COFs by rigid thiazole linkages can simultaneously enhance the stability, charge separation efficiency, and oxygen activation capability of COFs, resulting in the excellent photocatalytic degradation performance towards micropollutants in water. Background: Rapid urbanization and population growth exert a substantial impact on the accessibility of drinking water resources, underscoring the imperative for wastewater treatment and the reuse of non-potable water in agriculture. In this context, green walls emerge as a potential solution to augment the purification of unconventional waters, simultaneously contributing to the aesthetic appeal and enjoyment of urban areas. This study aims to optimize water management in green walls by investigating the impact of bacterial strains on the biochemical properties and performance of the ornamental accumulator plant, Aptenia cordifolia, grown with various unconventional water sources. The experiments were designed as split plots based on a completely randomized block design with three replications. The main factor was recycled water with three levels (gray water, wastewater from the Kashfroud region of Mashhad, and urban water (control)). The sub-factor included different bacterial strains at four levels, composed of various bacteria combinations, (B1: Psedoumonas flucrecens + Azosporillum liposferum + Thiobacillus thioparus + Aztobactor chorococcum, B2: Paenibacillus polymyxa + Pseudomonas fildensis + Bacillus subtilis + Achromobacter xylosoxidans + Bacillus licheniform, B3: Pseudomonas putida + Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Bacillus velezensis + Bacillus subtilis + Bacillus methylotrophicus + Mcrobacterium testaceum, and the control level without bacterial application (B0). Result: The findings revealed significant differences at the 5% probability level across all morphophysiological traits, including plant height, the number and length of lateral branches, growth index, and plant coverage. Moreover, superior morphophysiological traits were observed in plants cultivated in substrates inoculated with wastewater irrigation. Substrates inoculated with bacteria exhibited the highest relative water content (RWC) and chlorophyll levels, coupled with the lowest relative saturation deficit (RSD), electrolyte leakage (EL), and carotenoid levels. Furthermore, plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), from a biochemical perspective, were associated with increased carbohydrates, total protein, and anthocyanin. They also contributed to controlling oxidative stress caused by free radicals by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and peroxidase (POD), while reducing catalase enzyme (CAT) activity. This led to increased resistance to stress, as evidenced by a decrease in malondialdehyde and proline levels. The study concludes that the MIX B3, being both ecofriendly and economical, represents an effective strategy for mitigating the adverse effects of wastewater on plants. Conclusion: This study showed that plant irrigation using wastewater increases the levels of proline, phenols and oxidative stress. However, the application of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) reduced oxidative damage by increasing antioxidant activity and decreasing proline and phenol levels. TiO2‐based composite photocatalysts are currently being explored to address concerns intrinsic to TiO2, specifically high charge carrier recombination and UV light activation. Among various materials utilized for composite formation, carbon nanomaterials stand out due to their high electron conductivity, charge storage, photosensitization, and surface properties. However, high carbon content in composites has been shown to reduce performance with potential toxicity concerns. To harness the diverse properties of carbon nanomaterials in a single composite while optimizing the carbon content below 1% by weight, multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/TiO2 sensitized by carbon nanodots (CND) are synthesized. The heterojunction formed between MWCNTs and TiO2 in the binary composite reduced the charge carrier recombination rate compared to TiO2. The addition of CNDs to MWCNT/TiO2 induced visible light absorbance of the resulting ternary composite, due to the forbidden electron transitions undergone in CND aggregates. CND/MWCNT/TiO2 exhibited a fivefold and 1.6‐fold increase in photocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 and tetracycline under visible light compared to TiO2. This enhancement is attributed to the photosensitizing property of CNDs working in synergy with the charge storage ability of MWCNTs. The forage grass factory could break through the restrictions of land resources, region and climate to achieve efficient production throughout the year by accurate and intelligent management. However, due to its closed environment, mold outbreaks in the forage grass factory were severe, significantly affecting barley production. In this study, 9 contaminated barley tissues were collected and 45 strains were isolated in forage grass factory. After ITS sequencing, 45 strains were all identified as Rhizopus oryzae. Through stress factor assays, R. oryzae growth was seriously hindered by low concentration of sodium nitrate, high pH value and ozone water treatment. High pH and ozone water affected growth mainly by altering membrane integrity of R. oryzae. Sodium nitrate inhibited the growth of R. oryzae mainly by affecting the amount of sporulation. Low concentration of sodium nitrate and ozone water did not affect the growth of barley. High concentrations of sodium nitrate (100mM) and pH values (8-8.5) inhibited barley growth. Among them, ozone water had the most obvious inhibition effect on R. oryzae. Large-scale ozone water treatment in the forage grass factory had also played a role in restoring barley production. Taken together, the green techonology to controlmold disease andmaintain the safety of forage through different physicochemical methods was selected, which was of considerable application value in animal husbandry. Highlights: Challenges and future directions for 3D-printed metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) monoliths in environmental applications are discussed. Various strategies for fabrication of 3D-printed MOF monoliths are summarized. Advancements in 3D printing enable customizable and high-performance MOF monoliths. 3D orienting of MOFs opens avenues for applications in water treatment and gas adsorption. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively considered as one of the most promising types of porous and crystalline organic–inorganic materials, thanks to their large specific surface area, high porosity, tailorable structures and compositions, diverse functionalities, and well-controlled pore/size distribution. However, most developed MOFs are in powder forms, which still have some technical challenges, including abrasion, dustiness, low packing densities, clogging, mass/heat transfer limitation, environmental pollution, and mechanical instability during the packing process, that restrict their applicability in industrial applications. Therefore, in recent years, attention has focused on techniques to convert MOF powders into macroscopic materials like beads, membranes, monoliths, gel/sponges, and nanofibers to overcome these challenges.Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has achieved much interest because it can produce many high-resolution macroscopic frameworks with complex shapes and geometries from digital models. Therefore, this review summarizes the combination of different 3D printing strategies with MOFs and MOF-based materials for fabricating 3D-printed MOF monoliths and their environmental applications, emphasizing water treatment and gas adsorption/separation applications. Herein, the various strategies for the fabrication of 3D-printed MOF monoliths, such as direct ink writing, seed-assisted in-situ growth, coordination replication from solid precursors, matrix incorporation, selective laser sintering, and digital light processing, are described with the relevant examples. Finally, future directions and challenges of 3D-printed MOF monoliths are also presented to better plan future trajectories in the shaping of MOF materials with improved control over the structure, composition, and textural properties of 3D-printed MOF monoliths. The aim of this work was the characterization of polymer microspheres obtained by the suspension polymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), depending on the pore-forming diluents and molar ratio of monomers. The assessed properties included the chemical and porous structure, thermal stability, and sorption capacity of the obtained polymers towards methylene blue. The abovementioned characteristic was carried out for two series of copolymers with molar ratios of monomers of 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1, synthetized with toluene and a mixture of decanol and benzyl alcohol. The structure of the polymers was confirmed by FTIR and elemental analysis. The results of TGA demonstrated the main influence on thermal stability was the composition of polymers, whereas the impact of porogens was negligible. The SBET varied in the range of 12–534 m2g−1 for polymers obtained with toluene and 0–396 m2g−1 with the mixture of alcohols. Toluene enhanced the formation of micro- and mesopores, while the mixture of alcohols enhanced the creation of meso- and macropores. For the polymers prepared with toluene, their effectiveness in water purification decreases in the following order: DVB-GMA 2:1 > DVB-GMA 1:1 > DVB-GMA 1:2, according to the decreasing values of porous structure parameters. Antibiotics with significant environmental toxicity, e.g., tetracyclines (TCs), are often used in large quantities worldwide, with 50–80% of the applied dose ending up in the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and minocycline hydrochloride (MIN) on L. minor. Our research evaluated the phytotoxicity of the TCs by analyzing plant growth and biomass and evaluating assimilation pigment levels and fluorescence. The research was extended with the ability potential of duckweed as a tool for removing TCs from water/wastewater. The results demonstrated that both TCs influenced Ir, Iy, biomass, and photosynthetic efficiency. The uptake of TC and MIN by duckweed was proportional to the concentration in the growth medium. The TC was absorbed more readily, reaching up to 8.09 mg × g−1 of dry weight (DW) at the highest concentration (19.2 mg × L−1), while MIN reached 6.01 mg × g−1 of DW. As indicated, the consequences of the influence of TC on plants were slightly smaller, in comparison to MIN, while the plants could biosorb this drug, even at the lowest tested concentration. A scalable and cost-effective solution for removing pollutants from water is to use biodegradable and eco-friendly sorbents that are readily available such as starch. The current research explored the removal of crystal violet (CV) dye from water using chemically modified potato starch. The adsorbent was prepared by cross-linking potato starch with sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). The impact of various operating factors including pH, temperature, contact time, initial CV concentration, and adsorbent dosage on the removal of CV were investigated using batch experiments. The adsorption data were analyzed using a fuzzy regression approach, which provided a range-based representation of the model's output. The cross-linked starch adsorbent was mesoporous, with a mean pore diameter of 9.8 nm and a specific surface area of 2.7 m2/g. The adsorption of CV by the STMP cross-linked potato starch was primarily influenced by the adsorbent dosage, followed by the solution pH, temperature, initial CV concentration, and contact time. The fuzzy regression model accurately predicted the independent experimental data of CV removal with an R2 of 0.985, demonstrating its value as a tool for the continuous monitoring of CV removal as well as optimizing water treatment conditions. Bacteria of the Thiothrix morphotype, comprising the genera Thiothrix, Thiolinea and Thiofilum, are frequently encountered in domestic and industrial wastewater treatment systems, but they are usually not clearly differentiated due to the marked similarity in their morphologies. Methods ranging from light microscopy, FISH and PCR to modern high-throughput sequencing are used to identify them. The development of these bacteria in wastewater treatment systems has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, the explosive growth of these bacteria can lead to activated sludge bulking or clogging of the treatment system's membranes, with a consequent decrease in the water treatment efficiency. On the other hand, members of the Thiothrix morphotype can improve the quality of granular sludge and increase the water treatment efficiency. This may be due to their capacity for sulfide oxidation, denitrification combined with the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, enhanced biological phosphate removal and possibly denitrifying phosphate removal. The recently obtained pangenome of the genus Thiothrix allows the explanation, at the genomic level, of the experimental results of various studies. [Display omitted] Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) have emerged as a versatile and multifunctional platform applied in bioimaging, disease treatment, electrocatalysis, and water purification. The synthesis of MPNs with mesoporous frameworks and ultra-small diameters (<200 nm), crucial for post-modification, cargo loading, and mass transport, remains a formidable challenge. Inspired by mussel chemistry, mesoporous metal-phenolic nanospheres (MMPNs) are facilely prepared by direct deposition of the metal-polyphenol complex on the interface of oil nano-droplets composed of block copolymers/1,3,5-trimethylbenzene followed by a spontaneous template-removal process. Due to the penetrable and stable networks, the oil nano-droplets gradually leak from the networks driven by shear stress during the stirring process. As a result, MMPNs are obtained without additional template removal procedures such as solvent extraction or high-temperature calcination. The materials have a large pore size (∼12.1 nm), uniform spherical morphology with a small particle size (∼99 nm), and a large specific surface area (49.8 m2 g−1). Due to the abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, the MMPNs show excellent antioxidative property. The MMPNs also have excellent photothermal property, whose photothermal conversion efficiency was 40.9 %. Moreover, the phenolic hydroxyl groups can reduce Ag+ in situ to prepare Ag nanoparticles loaded MMPNs composites, which have excellent inhibition performance of drug-resistant bacteria biofilm. Photocatalysis is a green and environmentally friendly method for degrading dangerous and nonbiodegradable pollutants. In this study, a sequence of metal-free triazine-based electronic donor–acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers Tr-X (X = Th, BT, BTh) were prepared by D-A configuration regulation between triazine (Tr) and monomers containing N and S, such as thiophene (Th), bithiophene (BTh) and benzothiadiazole (BT) units, for the photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and benzene contaminants in water under visible light. Among these, Tr-BTh exhibited complete photocatalytic degradation owing to its excellent D-A configuration. Moreover, the N and S atoms, which are rich in triazine and thiophene units, serve as highly dispersed reactive sites. The separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers can be further improved by expanding the light-absorption range of polymers. In addition, the polymers showed good adsorption for BPA and other aromatic organic pollutants through π-π interaction and surface hydrogen bonding, which provides a facile strategy for efficient polymer-based photocatalysts for water purification. Pure water scarcity is the most significant emerging challenge of the modern society. Various organics such as pesticides (clomazone, quinmerac), pharmaceuticals (ciprofloxacin, 17α-ethynilestradiol), and mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol) can be found in the aquatic environment. The aim of this study was to fabricate ZnO nanomaterial on the basis of banana peel extract (ZnO/BPE) and investigate its efficiency in the photocatalytic degradation of selected organics under various experimental conditions. Newly synthesized ZnO/BPE nanomaterials were fully characterized by the XRD, FTIR, SEM-EPS, XPS, and BET techniques, which confirmed the successful formation of ZnO nanomaterials. The photocatalytic experiments showed that the optimal catalyst loading of ZnO/BPE was 0.5 mg/cm3, while the initial pH did not influence the degradation efficiency. The reusability of the ZnO/BPE nanomaterial was also tested, and minimal activity loss was found after three photocatalytic cycles. The photocatalytic efficiency of pure banana peel extract (BPE) was also studied, and the obtained data showed high removal of ciprofloxacin and 17α-ethynilestradiol. Finally, the influence of water from Danube River was also examined based on the degradation efficiency of selected pollutants. These results showed an enhanced removal of ciprofloxacin in water from the Danube River, while in the case of other pollutants, the treatment was less effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The issue of water pollution is one of the hot topics of global concern, which requires us to efficiently treat pollutants in water, especially printing and dyeing sewage. There are varieties of dyestuffs and intermediates, which are complex and difficult to degrade, and they even contain heavy metals. In this study, a bacterial strain named Q3-6 with potential for sewage treatment was isolated and its physiological, biochemical, and genomic characteristics, and potential application value, were further investigated. The genome sequence confirmed that it belongs to Bacillus thuringiensis. Strain Q3-6 has a significant decolorization effect on the dyes. The decolorization rate for Brilliant blue G-250 (0.1 g/L) and Congo Red (0.1 g/L) can reach 93.9% and 91.9%, respectively. In addition, strain Q3-6 is resistant to many kinds of antibiotics and heavy metals. Further, it has strong heat resistance, and heating at 80 °C can promote the biomass of the strain. Genomic analysis revealed the presence of genes related to heat shock proteins (GroES, GrpE, DnaJ, GroEL, DnaK, ClpB, and ClpA) in strain Q3-6. These results suggest the strain's exceptional resilience and adaptability to intricate environments with heavy metals, antibiotics, or high-temperature environments, suggesting its pivotal role in the bioremediation of complex contaminated effluents. This study aims to assess the efficiency of caffeine mitigation in an aqueous solution through a combination of adsorption and the Fenton reaction, using granular activated carbon (GAC). The present study also investigates the reduction in the concentration of oxidation byproducts in the solution and the regeneration of the solid. The combined process was conducted in four consecutive cycles using optimal values determined in individual technique studies. For the individual adsorption study, a Box–Behnken design was employed, with varying pH (3 to 11), GAC concentration (1.0 to 10.0 g L−1), and contact time (10 to 120 min). In the individual Fenton study, based on a factorial design, concentrations of FeSO4·7H2O (4 to 20 mg L−1) and H2O2 (25 to 150 mg L−1) were used at reaction times of 5 and 60 min. GAC was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific area (BET), and pore size (BJH) throughout all stages of experimentation. The outcomes show that the adsorption achieved a 93.4% removal rate under the optimal experimental conditions (natural pH, 65 min, and 10 mg L−1) and the Fenton reaction achieved a 98.92% degradation rate at a 37.5 ratio of H2O2/FeSO4·7H2O. The combined process also achieved an efficiency of over 95.7% of caffeine removal in four cycles, reducing the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) by more than 47.65% and 20.6% at 5 and 60 min of the Fenton reaction, respectively. Regeneration efficiencies of 99.6%, 91.8%, and 93.8% for the other three evaluated cycles were obtained. Mining is a key industrial activity contributing to the global economy, but it generates large volumes of wastewater with high turbidity due to mineral extraction and processing. In Ecuador, the growth of industrial and artisanal mining has worsened water pollution. Effective wastewater management is essential to mitigate the environmental impacts. Traditionally, chemical coagulants like aluminum sulfate reduce water turbidity, but they have drawbacks such as high costs, chemical waste generation, and adverse health effects. The residual aluminum in drinking water can harm the central nervous system and is linked to diseases like Alzheimer's and dialysis-related conditions. Given these concerns, evaluating plant species as natural coagulants is crucial. Moringa oleifera, widely found in tropical dry forests, has shown effectiveness in water treatment. This study assesses the efficacy of Moringa oleifera paste as a natural coagulant to reduce turbidity in mining wastewater compared to the efficacy of aluminum sulfate. Coagulation and flocculation tests determined the optimal doses and efficiency of both coagulants. The results indicated that Moringa oleifera achieved an 85% turbidity reduction compared to a 92% reduction with aluminum sulfate. This demonstrates its viability and effectiveness as a sustainable, economical, and safe alternative for water purification, promoting environmentally friendly practices in the mining industry. Antibiotic residues in water environments have garnered widespread attention. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have found extensive applications in water purification. This study investigates the use of a cobalt-based MOF material, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67(ZIF-67)(Co), for activating persulfate (PMS) to remove residual antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) from aqueous environments. The main findings are as follows: ZIF-67(Co) exhibits insignificant adsorption capacity for CIP, and PMS alone does not degrade CIP effectively. However, ZIF-67(Co)-activated PMS demonstrates the efficient degradation of CIP, following pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics. Under optimal conditions of the catalyst dosage (15 mg) and PMS concentration (1.0 mM), the removal efficiency reaches 88% after 60 min. Comparative analysis of CIP degradation at different initial pH levels shows that the highest efficiency is reached under mildly acidic conditions, with an 86% removal rate achieved within 60 min under these conditions. Investigation into the impact of various inorganic anions on the ZIF-67(Co)-catalyzed PMS degradation of CIP reveals significant inhibition by chloride ions ( Cl − ), whereas nitrate ( NO 3 - ) and sulfate ( SO 4 2 - ) ions have minor effects on the degradation efficiency. The system demonstrates a consistent performance across different water matrices, highlighting ZIF-67(Co)/PMS as effective for ciprofloxacin removal in environmental waters. Johkasou systems have emerged as quintessential examples of decentralized wastewater treatment technologies due to their compact design, easy operation, and robust resistance to mechanical impact attributes that are particularly effective in mitigating and treating rural domestic wastewater. Although the efficiency of the Johkasou process in removing nitrogen and phosphorus has been well-documented, a comprehensive synthesis of the underlying mechanisms and influencing factors is still elusive. This review seeks to elucidate these aspects by detailing the biogeochemical pathways involved in nitrogen and phosphorus removal, characterizing the key microbial consortia, and addressing the potential accumulation of nitrous oxide (N2O). Furthermore, the review critically examines the impact of various media used in Johkasou systems on nutrient removal efficacy, with a particular emphasis on nitrogen. It also proposes a range of practical adjustments to design parameters, including dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, temperature, and hydraulic retention time (HRT), to enhance process performance. Finally, the practical implementation of Johkasou systems and their integration with ancillary processes in actual domestic sewage treatment scenarios are synthesized, providing a theoretical foundation for advancing Johkasou methodologies in rural areas. The over-exploitation of groundwater and the deterioration of its quality have heightened the importance of non-traditional water resources, such as mine water. The study of the water's chemical characteristics and the formation mechanism of high-salinity mine water in semi-arid regions holds significant importance for zero discharge and the resource utilization of mine water in Northwest China. In this study, a total of 38 groundwater and mine water samples were collected to examine the hydrogeochemical characteristics of high-salinity mine water using Piper diagrams and Gibbs diagrams, as well as isotope analyses and ion ratio coefficients. Additionally, the corresponding mine water treatment recommendations were put forward. The results show that the TDS content of groundwater increases with hydrographic depth. The average TDS concentration of Quaternary, Luohe, and Anding groundwater is 336.87, 308.67, and 556.29 mg/L, respectively. However, the TDS concentration of Zhiluo groundwater and mine water is 2768.57 and 3826.40 mg/L, respectively, which belong to high-salinity water. The Quaternary, Luohe, and Anding groundwater hydrochemical type is predominantly HCO3-Ca type, and the Zhiluo groundwater and mine water hydrochemical type is predominantly the SO4-Na type. Furthermore, there is minimal difference observed in δD and δ18O values among these waters. It can be inferred that the Zhiluo Formation in groundwater serves as the primary source of mine water supply, primarily influenced by the processes of concentration caused by evaporation. The high salinity of mine water is closely related to the high salinity of Zhiluo groundwater. The high salinity of groundwater has evolved gradually under the control of the concentration caused by evaporation and rock-weathering processes. The dissolution of salt rock, gypsum, along with other minerals, serves as the material basis for high-salinity groundwater formation. In addition, the evolution of major ions is also affected by cation exchange. The TDS concentration of mine water ranges from 3435.4 mg/L to 4414.3 mg/L, and the combined treatment process of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis can be selected to remove the salt. Due to the many applications of manganese oxides in water treatment, this research aimed to synthesize α-Mn2O3 nanoparticles through a green method and investigate the dye adsorption capacity of them. The α-Mn2O3 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using KMnO4 and aqueous extract of Pyracantha angustofolia fruits under hydrothermal conditions and calcination. The products were identified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The adsorption capacity of methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR) dyes were evaluated at different concentrations (25, 50, and 75 ppm) using α-Mn2O3 nanoparticles. Results revealed the spherical and porous structure of α-Mn2O3 nanoparticles with a specific surface area of 21.7 m2.g-1. Dye removal significantly increased with pH decrement. The adsorption capacity for MO and CR was 73.07 and 70.70 mg.g−1, respectively. The adsorption data of both dyes followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The best fitted models for MO and CR adsorption were the Langmuir isotherm and the Dubinin–Radushkevich, respectively. In addition, a possible adsorption mechanism was proposed for both dyes.
