Photoexcitation by ultrashort laser pulses plays a crucial role in controlling reaction pathways, creating nonequilibrium material properties, and offering a microscopic view of complex dynamics at the molecular level. The photo response following a laser pulse is, in general, non-identical between multiple exposures due to spatiotemporal fluctuations in a material or the stochastic nature of dynamical pathways. However, most ultrafast experiments using a stroboscopic pump-probe scheme struggle to distinguish intrinsic sample fluctuations from extrinsic apparatus noise, often missing seemingly random deviations from the averaged shot-to-shot response. Leveraging the stability and high photon-flux of time-resolved X-ray micro-diffraction at a synchrotron, we developed a method to quantitatively characterize the shot-to-shot variation of the photoinduced dynamics in a solid-state electrolyte. By analyzing temporal evolutions of the lattice parameter of a single grain in a powder ensemble, we found that the sample responses after different shots contain random fluctuations that are, however, not independent. Instead, there is a correlation between the nonequilibrium lattice trajectories following adjacent laser shots with a characteristic "correlation length" of approximately 1,500 shots, which represents an energy barrier of 0.38~eV for switching the photoinduced pathway, a value interestingly commensurate with the activation energy of lithium ion diffusion. Not only does our nonequilibrium noise correlation spectroscopy provide a new strategy for studying fluctuations that are central to phase transitions in both condensed matter and molecular systems, it also paves the way for discovering hidden correlations and novel metastable states buried in oft-presumed random, uncorrelated fluctuating dynamics.

Ultrafast stimuli can stabilize metastable states of matter inaccessible by equilibrium means. Establishing the spatiotemporal link between ultrafast excitation and metastability is crucial to understanding these phenomena. Here, we use single-shot optical-pump, X-ray-probe measurements to provide snapshots of the emergence of a persistent polar vortex supercrystal in a heterostructure that hosts a fine balance between built-in electrostatic and elastic frustrations by design. By perturbing this balance with photoinduced charges, a starting heterogenous mixture of polar phases disorders within a few picoseconds, resulting in a soup state composed of disordered ferroelectric and suppressed vortex orders. On the pico-to-nanosecond timescales, transient labyrinthine fluctuations form in this soup along with a recovering vortex order. On longer timescales, these fluctuations are progressively quenched by dynamical strain modulations, which drive the collective emergence of a single supercrystal phase. Our results, corroborated by dynamical phase-field modeling, reveal how ultrafast excitation of designer systems generates pathways for persistent metastability.

The recent discovery of transient negative capacitance has sparked an intense debate on the role of homogeneous and inhomogeneous mechanisms in polarizations switching. In this work, we report observation of transient negative capacitance in improper ferroelectric h-YbFeO3 films in a resistor-capacitor circuit, and a concaved shape of anomaly in the voltage wave form, in the early and late stage of the polarizations switching respectively. Using a phenomenological model, we show that the early-stage negative capacitance is likely due to the inhomogeneous switching involving nucleation and domain wall motion, while the anomaly at the late stage, which appears to be a reminiscent negative capacitance is the manifestation of the thermodynamically unstable part of the free-energy landscape in the homogeneous switching. The complex free-energy landscape in hexagonal ferrites may be the key to cause the abrupt change in polarization switching speed and the corresponding anomaly. These results reconcile the two seemingly conflicting mechanisms in the polarization switching and highlight their different roles at different stages. Characterization of the inner-shell decay processes in molecules containing heavy elements is key to understanding x-ray damage of molecules and materials and for medical applications with Auger-electron-emitting radionuclides. The 1s hole states of heavy atoms can be produced by absorption of tunable x-rays and the resulting vacancy decays characterized by recording emitted photons, electrons, and ions. The 1s hole states in heavy elements have large x-ray fluorescence yields that transfer the hole to intermediate electron shells that then decay by sequential Auger-electron transitions that increase the ion's charge state until the final state is reached. In molecules the charge is spread across the atomic sites, resulting in dissociation to energetic atomic ions. We have used x-ray/ion coincidence spectroscopy to measure charge states and energies of I$^{q+}$ and Br$^{q'+}$ atomic ions following 1s ionization at the I and Br \textit{K}-edges of IBr. We present the charge states and kinetic energies of the two correlated fragment ions associated with core-excited states produced during the various steps of the cascades. To understand the dynamics leading to the ion data, we develop a computational model that combines Monte-Carlo/Molecular Dynamics simulations with a classical over-the-barrier model to track inner-shell cascades and redistribution of electrons in valence orbitals and nuclear motion of fragments.

The interplay between a multitude of electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom underlies the complex phase diagrams of quantum materials. Layer stacking in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is responsible for exotic electronic and magnetic properties, which inspires stacking control of two-dimensional magnetism. Beyond the interplay between stacking order and interlayer magnetism, we discover a spin-shear coupling mechanism in which a subtle shear of the atomic layers can have a profound effect on the intralayer magnetic order in a family of vdW antiferromagnets. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction and optical linear dichroism measurements, interlayer shear is identified as the primary structural degree of freedom that couples with magnetic order. The recovery times of both shear and magnetic order upon optical excitation diverge at the magnetic ordering temperature with the same critical exponent. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory shows that this concurrent critical slowing down arises from a linear coupling of the interlayer shear to the magnetic order, which is dictated by the broken mirror symmetry intrinsic to the monoclinic stacking. Our results highlight the importance of interlayer shear in ultrafast control of magnetic order via spin-mechanical coupling.

Synchrotrons are powerful and productive in revealing the spatiotemporal complexities in matter. However, X-ray pulses produced by the synchrotrons are predetermined in specific patterns and widths, limiting their operational flexibility and temporal resolution. Here, we introduce the on-chip picosecond synchrotron pulse shaper that shapes the sub-nm-wavelength hard X-ray pulses at individual beamlines, flexibly and efficiently beyond the synchrotron pulse limit. The pulse shaper is developed using the widely available silicon-on-insulator technology, oscillates in torsional motion at the same frequency or at harmonics of the storage ring, and manipulates X-ray pulses through the narrow Bragg peak of the crystalline silicon. Stable pulse manipulation is achieved by synchronizing the shaper timing to the X-ray timing using electrostatic closed-loop control. Tunable shaping windows down to 40 $ps$ are demonstrated, allowing X-ray pulse picking, streaking, and slicing in the majority of worldwide synchrotrons. The compact, on-chip shaper offers a simple but versatile approach to boost synchrotron operating flexibility and to investigate structural dynamics from condensed matter to biological systems beyond the current synchrotron-source limit.

We demonstrate that kinetics play an important role in the epitaxial growth of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic films by molecular beam epitaxy. By varying the deposition rate, we control the formation or suppression of an initial tellurium-deficient non-van der Waals phase (Fe$_3$Ge$_2$) prior to realizing epitaxial growth of the vdW FGT phase. Using cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we optimize the FGT films to have atomically smooth surfaces and abrupt interfaces with the Ge(111) substrate. The magnetic properties of our high quality material are confirmed through magneto-optic, magnetotransport, and spin-polarized STM studies. Importantly, this demonstrates how the interplay of energetics and kinetics can help tune the re-evaporation rate of chalcogen atoms and interdiffusion from the underlayer, which paves the way for future studies of van der Waals epitaxy., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe4. By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observed that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge-density-wave (CDW) phase of EuTe4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly-coupled 3D systems. Our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

As a 3D topological insulator, bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) has potential applications for electrically and optically controllable magnetic and optoelectronic devices. How the carriers interact with lattice is important to understand the coupling with its topological phase. It is essential to measure with a time scale smaller than picoseconds for initial interaction. Here we use an X-ray free-electron laser to perform time-resolved diffraction to study ultrafast carrier-induced lattice contractions and interlayer modulations in Bi2Se3 thin films. The lattice contraction depends on the carrier concentration and is followed by an interlayer expansion accompanied by oscillations. Using density functional theory (DFT) and the Lifshitz model, the initial contraction can be explained by van der Waals force modulation of the confined free carrier layers. Band inversion, related to a topological phase transition, is modulated by the expansion of the interlayer distance. These results provide insight into instantaneous topological phases on ultrafast timescales.

The development of next generation perovskite-based optoelectronic devices relies critically on the understanding of the interaction between charge carriers and the polar lattice in out-of-equilibrium conditions. While it has become increasingly evident for CsPbBr3 perovskites that the Pb-Br framework flexibility plays a key role in their light-activated functionality, the corresponding local structural rearrangement has not yet been unambiguously identified. In this work, we demonstrate that the photoinduced lattice changes in the system are due to a specific polaronic distortion, associated with the activation of a longitudinal optical phonon mode at 18 meV by electron-phonon coupling, and we quantify the associated structural changes with atomic-level precision. Key to this achievement is the combination of time-resolved and temperature-dependent studies at Br K-edge and Pb L3-edge X-ray absorption with refined ab-initio simulations, which fully account for the screened core-hole final state effects on the X-ray absorption spectra. From the temporal kinetics, we show that carrier recombination reversibly unlocks the structural deformation at both Br and Pb sites. The comparison with the temperature-dependent XAS results rules out thermal effects as the primary source of distortion of the Pb-Br bonding motif during photoexcitation. The collective dynamics of topological structures have been of great interest from both fundamental and applied perspectives. For example, the studies of dynamical properties of magnetic vortices and skyrmions not only deepened the understanding of many-body physics but also led to potential applications in data processing and storage. Topological structures constructed from electrical polarization rather than spin have recently been realized in ferroelectric superlattices, promising for ultrafast electric-field control of topological orders. However, little is known about the dynamics of such complex extended nanostructures which in turn underlies their functionalities. Using terahertz-field excitation and femtosecond x-ray diffraction measurements, we observe ultrafast collective polarization dynamics that are unique to polar vortices, with orders of magnitude higher frequencies and smaller lateral size than those of experimentally realized magnetic vortices. A previously unseen soft mode, hereafter referred to as a vortexon, emerges as transient arrays of nanoscale circular patterns of atomic displacements, which reverse their vorticity on picosecond time scales. Its frequency is significantly reduced at a critical strain, indicating a condensation of structural dynamics. First-principles-based atomistic calculations and phase-field modeling reveal the microscopic atomic arrangements and frequencies of the vortex modes. The discovery of subterahertz collective dynamics in polar vortices opens up opportunities for applications of electric-field driven data processing in topological structures with ultrahigh speed and density.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators from MnBi2Te4 family promise realization of axion insulator, a theoretically predicted state of matter capable to mutually convert electric and magnetic signals, and whose properties are reminiscent of cosmological axion dark matter. Here we report the first experimental realization of room-temperature axionic single-spin switch in topological metamaterial MnBi2Te3. The metamaterial was in situ created in the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiment by removing Te atomic layer from MnBi2Te4 surface using STM tip. Room temperature STM study of MnBi2Te3 revealed atomic scale variations of exchange gap and formation of nanoscale spin bubbles pinned at subsurface defects. We found that individual spin states in MnBi2Te3 can be reversibly switched using local electric field of STM tip with magnetoelectric response comparable to the theoretically predicted response of axion insulator. The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, Te) are promising candidates in realizing various novel topological states related to symmetry breaking by magnetic order. Although much progress had been made in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, the study of MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ has been lacking due to the difficulty of material synthesis of the desired trigonal phase. Here, we report the synthesis of multilayer trigonal MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ with alternating-layer molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) identify a well-ordered multilayer van der Waals (vdW) crystal with septuple-layer base units in agreement with the trigonal structure. Systematic thickness-dependent magnetometry studies illustrate the layered antiferromagnetic ordering as predicted by theory. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals the gapless Dirac-like surface state of MnBi$_2$Se$_4$, which demonstrates that MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ is a topological insulator above the magnetic ordering temperature. These systematic studies show that MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ is a promising candidate for exploring the rich topological phases of layered antiferromagnetic topological insulators., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Surface X-ray scattering studies of electrochemical Stern layer are reported. The Stern layers formed at the interfaces of RuO2 (110) and (100) in 0.1 M CsF electrolyte are compared to the previously reported Stern layer on Pt(111) [Liu et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 9 (2018) 1265]. While the Cs+ density profiles at the potentials close to hydrogen evolution reaction are similar, the hydration layers intervening the surface and the Cs+ layer on RuO2 surfaces are significantly denser than the hydration layer on Pt(111) surface possibly due to the oxygen termination of RuO2 surfaces. Ordered electronic phases are intimately related to emerging phenomena such as high Tc superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The coupling of electronic charge with other degrees of freedom such as lattice and spin are of central interest in correlated systems. Their correlations have been intensively studied from femtosecond to picosecond time scales, while the dynamics of ordered electronic phases beyond nanoseconds are usually assumed to follow a trivia thermally driven recovery. Here, we report an unusual slowing down of the recovery of an electronic phase across a first-order phase transition, far beyond thermal relaxation time. Following optical excitation, the recovery time of both transient optical reflectivity and x-ray diffraction intensity from a charge-ordered superstructure in a La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_3$ thin film increases by orders of magnitude longer than the independently measured lattice cooling time when the sample temperature approaches the phase transition temperature. The combined experimental and theoretical investigations show that the slowing down of electronic recovery corresponds to the pseudo-critical dynamics that originates from magnetic interactions close to a weakly first-order phase transition. This extraordinary long electronic recovery time exemplifies an interplay of ordered electronic phases with magnetism beyond thermal processes in correlated systems.

The dynamical processes associated with electric field manipulation of the polarization in a ferroelectric remain largely unknown but fundamentally determine the speed and functionality of ferroelectric materials and devices. Here we apply sub-picosecond duration, single-cycle terahertz pulses as an ultrafast electric field bias to prototypical BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric thin films with the atomic-scale response probed by femtosecond x-ray scattering techniques. We show that electric fields applied perpendicular to the ferroelectric polarization drive large amplitude displacements of the titanium atoms along the ferroelectric polarization axis, comparable to that of the built-in displacements associated with the intrinsic polarization and incoherent across unit cells. This effect is associated with a dynamic rotation of the ferroelectric polarization switching on and then off on picosecond timescales. These transient polarization modulations are followed by long-lived vibrational heating effects driven by resonant excitation of the ferroelectric soft mode, as reflected in changes in the c-axis tetragonality. The ultrafast structural characterization described here enables direct comparison with first-principles-based molecular dynamics simulations, with good agreement obtained.

Dynamical phase separation during a solid-solid phase transition poses a challenge for understanding the fundamental processes in correlated materials. Critical information underlying a phase transition, such as localized phase competition, is difficult to reveal by measurements that are spatially averaged over many phase separated regions. The ability to simultaneously track the spatial and temporal evolution of such systems is essential to understanding mesoscopic processes during a phase transition. Using state-of-the-art time-resolved hard x-ray diffraction microscopy, we directly visualize the structural phase progression in a VO2 film upon photoexcitation. Following a homogenous in-plane optical excitation, the phase transformation is initiated at discrete sites and completed by the growth of one lattice structure into the other, instead of a simultaneous isotropic lattice symmetry change. The time-dependent x-ray diffraction spatial maps show that the in-plane phase progression in laser-superheated VO2 is via a displacive lattice transformation as a result of relaxation from an excited monoclinic phase into a rutile phase. The speed of the phase front progression is quantitatively measured, and is faster than the process driven by in-plane thermal diffusion but slower than the sound speed in VO2. The direct visualization of localized structural changes in the time domain opens a new avenue to study mesoscopic processes in driven systems.

In correlated oxides the coupling of quasiparticles to other degrees of freedom such as spin and lattice plays critical roles in the emergence of symmetry-breaking quantum ordered states such as high temperature superconductivity. We report a strong lattice coupling of photon induced Hubbard excitonic quasiparticles in spin-orbital coupling Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. Combining time-resolved optical spectroscopy techniques, we further reconstructed spatiotemporal map of the diffusion of quasiparticles via time-dependent coherence analysis of the x-ray Bragg diffraction peak. Due to the unique electronic configuration of the exciton, the strong lattice correlation is unexpected but extends the similarity between Sr2IrO4 and cuprates under highly non-equilibrium conditions. We show evidence that the competition between the antiferromagetic metallic phase and the charge- and orbital-ordered insulating phase at the reentrant phase boundary of a layered manganite, LaSr2Mn2O7, can be manipulated using ultrafast optical excitation. The time-dependent evolution of the Jahn-Teller superlattice reflection, which indicates the formation of the charge and orbital order, was measured at different laser fluences. The laser-induced enhancement and reduction the Jahn-Teller reflection intensity shows a reversal of sign between earlier (~10 ns) and later (~150 ns) time delays during the relaxation after photo excitation. The coupling between strain gradients and polarization, known as flexoelectricity, offers a new mechanism to control the functionality of dielectric materials. However, for the effect to be practically attractive, dynamic control of the strain gradient with magnitudes far exceeding those achievable via mechanical deformation (~10 $m^{-1}$) is needed. Strain-engineered thin films exhibit extraordinary strain gradients of $10^5-10^6 m{-1}$ arising from structural relaxation within a short space range that greatly enhances the steady-state flexoelectric effect. Here we report a giant, optically initiated dynamic enhancement of the strain gradient, also on the order of $10^5 -10^6 m^{-1}$, in ferroelectric BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films via time-dependent coherence analysis of X-ray diffractions. The finding opens the door for dynamic coupling of the flexoelectric effect with light, making optical switching of polarization, and thus application such as direct optical writing of non-volatile ferroelectric memory, possible. A combination of time-resolved X-ray scattering and optical spectroscopy shows that the enhancement of the strain gradient is due to a piezoelectric effect driven by a transient screening electric field, opening the opportunity for new ways of studying flexoelectric effect in strain engineered ferroelectric thin films., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures in the main text; 13 pages, 6 figures in the supplementary information

Here we report on the dynamics of the structural order parameter in a chromium film using synchrotron radiation in response to photo-induced ultra-fast excitations. Following transient optical excitations the effective lattice temperature of the film rises close to the N\'{e}el temperature and the charge density wave (CDW) amplitude is reduced. Although we expect the electronic charge ordering to vanish shortly after the excitation we observe that the CDW is never completely disrupted, which is revealed by its unmodified period at elevated temperatures. We attribute the persistence of the CDW to the long-lived periodic lattice displacement in chromium. The long-term evolution shows that the CDW revives to its initial strength within 1 ns, which appears to behave in accordance with the temperature dependence in equilibrium. The structural and electronic recovery pathways of a photoexcited ultrathin VO2 film at nanosecond time scales have been studied using time-resolved x-ray diffraction and transient optical absorption techniques. The recovery pathways from the tetragonal metallic phase to the monoclinic insulating phase are highly dependent on the optical pump fluence. At pump fluences higher than the saturation fluence of 14.7 mJ/cm2, we observed a transient structural state with lattice parameter larger than that of the tetragonal phase, which is decoupled from the metal-to-insulator phase transition. Subsequently, the photoexcited VO2 film recovered to the ground state at characteristic times dependent upon the pump fluence, as a result of heat transport from the film to the substrate. We present a procedure to measure the time-resolved film temperature by correlating photoexcited and temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements. A thermal transport model that incorporates changes of the thermal parameters across the phase transition reproduces the observed recovery dynamics. The optical excitation and fast recovery of ultrathin VO2 films provides a practical method to reversibly switch between the monoclinic insulating and tetragonal metallic state at nanosecond time scales.

In the Ge on Si model heteroepitaxial system, metal patterns on the silicon surface provide unprecedented control over the morphology of highly ordered Ge islands. Island shape including nanorods and truncated pyramids is set by the metal species and substrate orientation. Analysis of island faceting elucidates the prominent role of the metal in promoting growth of preferred facet orientations while investigations of island composition and structure reveal the importance of Si-Ge intermixing in island evolution.
