This article discusses the evolution and diversity of secondary cell walls (SCWs) in seed plants. The study used cryoSEM to analyze macrofibrils in 33 different angiosperm and gymnosperm species. The results showed that angiosperms generally have narrower macrofibrils compared to gymnosperms, but there are exceptions. The findings provide insights into wood nanostructure and cell wall composition, which can be useful for selecting or engineering desirable wood properties and improving carbon sequestration in plantation forests. The study also examines the evolution of macrofibril size in seed plants, specifically focusing on angiosperms and gymnosperms. The researchers found that large macrofibrils are characteristic of gymnosperms, while small macrofibrils are characteristic of angiosperms. However, they also discovered an intermediate macrofibril size in the Liriodendron genus. Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) have received a lot of attention as a tool to mitigate climate change and reach climate neutrality. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is seen as one of the more promising CDRs, and from 2026, the Danish utility Ørsted is establishing the first BECCS plants in Denmark. We present a case study of BECCS by installing CCS at a biomass‐fired CHP plant and the aim is to quantify the CDR potential and carbon dynamics of the BECCS system. Moreover, the study aims to quantify the emissions related to capturing and store CO2. The GHG emissions from CCS including heat, electricity, transport and storage are approximately 100 kgCO2/t stored CO2 and the carbon payback time of the BECCS system is 3–4 years relative to leaving the wood in the forest or at processing industries. The main driver of the payback time is the additional use of biomass to operate CCS which shifts the timing of CO2 emissions more towards the present. The additional biomass use also increases supply chain emissions, and on top of that, only 90% of the direct CO2 emissions from the CHP plant are captured. The study illustrates the importance of temporal scope in assessing the CDR potential of BECCS. With continuous use of biomass, GHG emissions are 207 kgCO2/t stored CO2 in year 1 and −742 kgCO2/t stored CO2 in year 99. This study reveals inconsistencies in the assessment of the CDR potential of BECCS in the literature. There is a considerable need for further research within this field to assess how BECCS can contribute to mitigating climate change and on the appropriate scale of BECCS deployment. Background: Wood carbon fractions (CFs)—the proportion of dry woody biomass comprised of elemental carbon (C)—are a key component of forest C estimation protocols and studies. Traditionally, a wood CF of 50% has been assumed in forest C estimation protocols, but recent studies have specifically quantified differences in wood CFs across several different forest biomes and taxonomic divisions, negating the need for generic wood CF assumptions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in its 2006 "Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories", published its own multitiered system of protocols for estimating forest C stocks, which included wood CFs that (1) were based on the best available literature (at the time) and (2) represented a significant improvement over the generic 50% wood CF assumption. However, a considerable number of new studies on wood CFs have been published since 2006, providing more accurate, robust, and spatially- and taxonomically- specific wood CFs for use in forest C estimation. Main text: We argue that the IPCC's recommended wood CFs and those in many other forest C estimation models and protocols (1) differ substantially from, and are less robust than, wood CFs derived from recently published data-rich studies; and (2) may lead to nontrivial errors in forest C estimates, particularly for countries that rely heavily on Tier 1 forest C methods and protocols (e.g., countries of the Global South with large expanses of tropical forests). Based on previous studies on this topic, we propose an alternative set of refined wood CFs for use in multiscale forest C estimation, and propose a novel decision-making framework for integrating species- and location-specific wood CFs into forest C estimation models. Conclusion: The refined wood CFs that we present in this commentary may be used by the IPCC to update its recommended wood CFs for use in forest C estimation. Purpose: Wood comprises different cell types, such as fibers, tracheids and vessels, defining its properties. Studying cells' shape, size, and arrangement in microscopy images is crucial for understanding wood characteristics. Typically, this involves macerating (soaking) samples in a solution to separate cells, then spreading them on slides for imaging with a microscope that covers a wide area, capturing thousands of cells. However, these cells often cluster and overlap in images, making the segmentation difficult and time-consuming using standard image-processing methods. Results: In this work, we developed an automatic deep learning segmentation approach that utilizes the one-stage YOLOv8 model for fast and accurate segmentation and characterization of macerated fiber and vessel form aspen trees in microscopy images. The model can analyze 32,640 x 25,920 pixels images and demonstrate effective cell detection and segmentation, achieving a mAP 0.5 - 0.95 of 78 %. To assess the model's robustness, we examined fibers from a genetically modified tree line known for longer fibers. The outcomes were comparable to previous manual measurements. Additionally, we created a user-friendly web application for image analysis and provided the code for use on Google Colab. Conclusion: By leveraging YOLOv8's advances, this work provides a deep learning solution to enable efficient quantification and analysis of wood cells suitable for practical applications. Summary: Wood formation, which occurs mainly through secondary xylem development, is important not only for supplying raw material for the 'ligno‐chemical' industry but also for driving the storage of carbon. However, the complex mechanisms underlying the promotion of xylem formation remain to be elucidated. Here, we found that overexpression of Auxin‐Regulated Gene involved in Organ Size (ARGOS) in hybrid poplar 84 K (Populus alba × Populus tremula var. glandulosa) enlarged organ size. In particular, PagARGOS promoted secondary growth of stems with increased xylem formation. To gain further insight into how PagARGOS regulates xylem development, we further carried out yeast two‐hybrid screening and identified that the auxin transporter WALLS ARE THIN1 (WAT1) interacts with PagARGOS. Overexpression of PagARGOS up‐regulated WAT1, activating a downstream auxin response promoting cambial cell division and xylem differentiation for wood formation. Moreover, overexpressing PagARGOS caused not only higher wood yield but also lower lignin content compared with wild‐type controls. The biosynthesis of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in plant secondary cell walls (SCWs) is regulated by a hierarchical transcriptional regulatory network. This network features orthologous transcription factors shared between poplar and Arabidopsis, highlighting a foundational similarity in their genetic regulation. However, knowledge on the discrepant behavior of the transcriptional‐level molecular regulatory mechanisms between poplar and Arabidopsis remains limited. In this study, we investigated the function of PagMYB128 during wood formation and found it had broader impacts on SCW formation compared to its Arabidopsis ortholog, AtMYB103. Transgenic poplar trees overexpressing PagMYB128 exhibited significantly enhanced xylem development, with fiber cells and vessels displaying thicker walls, and an increase in the levels of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in the wood. In contrast, plants with dominant repression of PagMYB128 demonstrated the opposite phenotypes. RNA sequencing and reverse transcription – quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that PagMYB128 could activate SCW biosynthetic gene expression, and chromatin immunoprecipitation along with yeast one‐hybrid, and effector–reporter assays showed this regulation was direct. Further analysis revealed that PagSND1 (SECONDARY WALL‐ASSOCIATED NAC‐DOMAIN PROTEIN1) directly regulates PagMYB128 but not cell wall metabolic genes, highlighting the pivotal role of PagMYB128 in the SND1‐driven regulatory network for wood development, thereby creating a feedforward loop in SCW biosynthesis. This study evaluated two fundamental assumptions about the geometry of the wood cell wall to develop a mechanistic characterization of wood behavior at the scale of wood structural components. This paper used a three-step homogenization scheme implemented through homogenization techniques and finite-element analyses to evaluate a multilayered cell wall and a simplified single-layer method. Both earlywood and latewood geometries were considered. A three-part sensitivity analysis assessed the influence of wood constituent proportions, microfibril angle, and cellulose crystallinity on cell wall stiffness. Sensitivity to constituent ratios was evaluated through a Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000 sampled points and correlation analysis. Sensitivity to microfibril angle and cellulose crystallinity was evaluated through parametric characterization. The investigation found that both methods provided an accurate assessment of wood stiffness when compared with experimentally determined values. Care should be taken when modeling higher densities of wood, and use of either method in higher order models should be determined by the resolution of input data and computational needs. Paleoclimate reconstructions from the Holocene are important for defining baseline conditions in order to interpret and contextualize the effects of modern climate change. Such records are particularly lacking for Siberia, a region that represents ~ 50% of the Arctic. In addition, the majority of proxy-based paleoclimate reconstructions for the Holocene represent mean annual conditions, and few quantify winter temperature, which is particularly important for predicting the effects of global warming in Arctic environments. Here we provide the first quantitative proxy reconstruction of precipitation and temperature for both summer and winter for 3000 years ago via novel high-resolution intra-annual carbon and oxygen isotope measurements across annual growth rings of fossil wood mummified within the permafrost of far northeastern Siberia. We found that the site experienced greater precipitation year-round (~ 10% increase in summer and ~ 30% increase in winter), cooler summer temperatures, and warmer winter temperatures, compared with today. Our findings indicate that warmer winter temperatures (+ 3.0 °C above early twentieth century values) in the Arctic 3000 years ago drove higher mean annual temperature by up to 1 °C, despite the existence of cooler summers, a similar phenomenon to what is observed within today's Arctic environments, and past intervals of extreme global warmth. Summary: Forests make immense contributions to societies in the form of ecological services and sustainable industrial products. However, they face major challenges to their viability and economic use due to climate change and growing biotic and economic threats, for which recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology can sometimes provide solutions. But the application of rDNA technologies to forest trees faces major social and biological obstacles that make its societal acceptance a 'wicked' problem without straightforward solutions. We discuss the nature of these problems, and the social and biological innovations that we consider essential for progress. As case studies of biological challenges, we focus on studies of modifications in wood chemistry and transformation efficiency. We call for major innovations in regulations, and the dissolution of method‐based market barriers, that together could lead to greater research investments, enable wide use of field studies, and facilitate the integration of rDNA‐modified trees into conventional breeding programs. Without near‐term adoption of such innovations, rDNA‐based solutions will be largely unavailable to help forests adapt to the growing stresses from climate change and the proliferation of forest pests, nor will they be available to provide economic and environmental benefits from expanded use of wood and related bioproducts as part of an expanding bioeconomy. Summary: Woody plants display some photosynthetic activity in stems, but the biological role of stem photosynthesis and the specific contributions of bark and wood to carbon uptake and oxygen evolution remain poorly understood.We aimed to elucidate the functional characteristics of chloroplasts in stems of different ages in Fraxinus ornus. Our investigation employed diverse experimental approaches, including microsensor technology to assess oxygen production rates in whole stem, bark, and wood separately. Additionally, we utilized fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) to characterize the relative abundance of photosystems I and II (PSI : PSII chlorophyll ratio) in bark and wood.Our findings revealed light‐induced increases in O2 production in whole stem, bark, and wood. We present the radial profile of O2 production in F. ornus stems, demonstrating the capability of stem chloroplasts to perform light‐dependent electron transport. Younger stems exhibited higher light‐induced O2 production and dark respiration rates than older ones.While bark emerged as the primary contributor to net O2 production under light conditions, our data underscored that wood chloroplasts are also photosynthetically active. The FLIM analysis unveiled a lower PSI abundance in wood than in bark, suggesting stem chloroplasts are not only active but also acclimate to the spectral composition of light reaching inner compartments. Plastic recyclates can be contaminated with a variety of impurities due to their previous life, which cannot always be perfectly separated in recycling pretreatment steps. Hence melt filtration is an important step in reprocessing plastic recyclates to achieve material of sufficient purity, but it also leads to more stress on the material due to higher pressures and longer processing times. In our study, we investigated the influence of typical particulate impurities as may occur in recyclate on the mechanical and rheological properties of ABS. Even low amounts of contaminations lowered the key properties. Melt filtration of post‐consumer ABS recyclate with different mesh size melt screens showed little improvement of mechanical properties, but longer idle times and loss of material. Damage to the material caused by finer filtration could be shown by thermal measurements. Abstract Background Dehydration of plant tissues caused by water stress affects the dynamics of the lateral cambium, the rate of cell division and differentiation in cell lumen size, wall thickness and wall chemical properties. Based on evidence that ongoing climate change projects longer and more intense water stress conditions, forest dynamics and decline are predicted to be affected by increases in drought intensity and frequency. To verify the interaction of these phenomena, we described the modifications in the anatomy and mineral contents of annual growth rings of Araucaria araucana seedlings subjected to water stress treatments, using X-ray densitometry and X-ray fluorescence techniques. Results Severe water stress conditions during the growing period produced narrower tree rings, with reduced cell lumen size (5–7 µm) and higher tracheid reinforcement factor values, but with lower wood density. Plants subjected to moderate water stress generated intra-annual density fluctuations coinciding with periods of decreased soil moisture. Under the precept that the essential nutrients play a relevant role in the functioning of trees, we found evidence of element allocation and concentration in response to drought. Calcium and phosphorus concentration increased significantly as stress becomes more severe, but with small differences between early- and latewood. On the contrary, potassium and sulfur presented lower values in the most stressed plants, and manganese had the lowest values only for moderate water stress. Finally, S/Ca and K/Ca molar ratios decreased, while Ca/Mn increased as stress becomes more severe. Conclusions Our findings suggested that A. araucana seedlings invested resources aimed at increasing structural components of the cell wall to prevent cavitation. This would maintain metabolism and cell growth even in unfavorable environmental conditions. Furthermore, the imbalance of manganese and calcium and their consequent ratio (Ca/Mn) could be linked to early adaptive signals to avoid dieback.

Recent advances in wood treatment include the use of eco-friendly coatings to improve the wood's dimensional stability and appearance. Assessing coating performance during its service life is critical for establishing a knowledge base for product optimization. Numerous approaches, including microimaging, are available for analyzing coating behavior. In addition to conventional microscopic techniques, high-resolution X-ray microtomography is a tool that provides nondestructive imaging of coatings and their substrates. In this study, we performed two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) visualization of tomographic reconstruction images of two coating types, spray and brush, to observe and assess the distribution of several commercial Japanese coating materials in Fagus crenata. X-ray images and plot profiles were used to determine the penetration depths and thicknesses of coatings. Each coated sample was scanned using X-ray microtomography, which allowed successful visualization and quantification of the coating penetration depth. The production of orange (Citrus sinensis) generates many residues, and the few that are used are usually by-products of the fruit juice processing industry. Among the residues, wood is potentially advantageous for use in bioenergy, but with few records in the literature. In this sense, this study sought to evaluate the feasibility of using orange wood for energy purposes by performing chemical characterization, immediate analysis, FTIR, calorific value, thermogravimetry and bulk and energetic densities for three compositions: 100% trunk (100T), 90% trunk + 10% bark (90T10B) and 100% bark (100B). 100T showed a higher fixed carbon content (16.76%) and equality with 90T10B in lignin, holocellulose, useful calorific value and volatile materials. 100B presented higher extractives and ash contents of 19.67% and 10.35%, respectively. The FTIR spectra and thermogravimetric curves were similar in 100T and 90T10B. 100B showed more stages of degradation and a higher incidence of peaks in the range 780–612 cm−1. The bulk density was equal in 100T and 90T10B, but the energy density was higher in 100T (6.16 Gj.m−3). 100T and 90T10B are good options for bioenergy and the chemical composition and thermal degradation of 100B point to new investigations in this composition. Cangjie Temple was built to commemorate Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese characters. It stands as one of the few remaining temples in China dedicated to the invention and creation of writing. In this study, the material properties of wooden paintings from the Cangjie temple were characterized using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Micro-confocal Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). It was confirmed that the pigments of the paintings included cinnabar, lapis lazuli, lead white, Paris green, and carbon black. The proteinaceous glue was used as an adhesive in the pigment samples, with tung oil likely being utilized as a primer for the wooden structures before painting. This study not only provides valuable data support for the conservation and restoration of the architectural features of Cangjie Temple but also provides useful reference for the maintenance and inheritance of similar ancient buildings. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a manmade chemical that is widely present in the environment and is mostly used as a wood preservative. Therefore, to conduct remediation studies, it is imperative to determine the most effective PCP analytical technique. PCP can be analyzed using a variety of analytical tools, including non-destructible methods like X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and electrochemical sensors (EC), destructible tools like gas chromatography (GC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), colorimetry, ultraviolet–visible and infrared spectroscopy (UV–vis/IR), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). the colorimetric approach is less recommended because of its low sensitivity and precision, whereas TLC offers superior recovery rates and precision but is expensive, takes longer, and is unable to resolve complicated combinations. Higher recovery rates, sensitivity, precision, and superior separation are all offered by HPLC; however, its effectiveness is impacted by time, money, and solvent compatibility. The most favored destructible approach is GC because it is efficient in terms of both cost and time and offers superior precision and separation. Although XRF is frequently used in the wood industry to test PCP in treated wood and treating solutions, scientific research has avoided using it because of its high cost and ability to identify chemicals based only on their elemental composition—in the case of PCP, it is chloride. Among all methods, EC is shown to be more dependable than the other methods listed because it is extremely specialized, less expensive, and offers a faster response. It is possible to make more changes to the current analytical techniques, such as enhancing extraction techniques, creating a universal HPLC column, developing more affordable and high-precision EC electrodes, and evaluating a larger variety of samples from different matrices. Wood is the water conducting tissue of tree stems. Like most angiosperm trees, poplar wood contains water-conducting vessel elements whose functional properties affect water transport and growth rates, as well as susceptibility to embolism and hydraulic failure during water stress and drought. Here we used a unique hybrid poplar pedigree carrying genomically characterized chromosomal insertions and deletions to undertake a systems genomics analysis of vessel traits. We assayed gene expression in wood forming tissues from clonal replicates of genotypes covering dosage quantitative trait loci with insertions and deletions, genotypes with extreme vessel trait phenotypes, and control genotypes. A gene co-expression analysis was used to assign genes to modules, which were then used in integrative analyses to identify modules associated with traits, to identify putative molecular and cellular processes associatedwith eachmodule, and finally to identify candidate genes using multiple criteria including dosage responsiveness. These analyses identified known processes associated with vessel traits including stress response, abscisic acid and cell wall biosynthesis, and in addition identified previously unexplored processes including cell cycle and protein ubiquitination. Uganda hosts Africa's largest refugee population, exceeding 1.5 million in early 2023. While commended for its progressive refugee policies, which grant freedom of movement and work opportunities, the influx of displaced people since 2015 has strained shared environmental resources, including slow-growing indigenous trees utilized for construction and fuel. Efforts to preserve indigenous biodiversity have promoted the growth and use of faster-growing exotic tree species. However, local communities often favor indigenous trees as fuel sources, despite limited evidence supporting their superiority. This study assessed fuel properties of selected indigenous and exotic tree species in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda. Laboratory analysis of wood samples revealed no significant differences in moisture content, fixed carbon, volatile matter, or Fuel Value Index (FVI) among the species. The study therefore recommends promoting fast-growing exotic species like Eucalyptus grandis, Caliandra calothyrsus, and Senna siamea, urging international agencies, NGOs, and community-led organizations to leverage the findings for behavior change campaigns. This approach would facilitate species regeneration, alleviate pressure on natural forests, and supplement Uganda's investment strategy in Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) such as LPG and solar e-cooking technologies. The study examines the unique production process of Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena PDO (ABTM), emphasizing its complex phases and the impact of raw materials and artisanal skill on its flavor characteristics. Analytical tests focused on the volatile composition of vinegars from different wood barrels at different aging stages, using solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography, either with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or flame ionization detector (FID). Multivariate analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA), was employed to investigate the presence of peculiarities among the volatile profiles of samples of different barrel origin. The research focuses on characterizing the volatile composition of vinegars sourced from individual wood barrels, such as Cherry, Chestnut, Mulberry, Juniper, and Oak. Although it was not possible to identify molecules directly connected to the woody essence, some similarities emerged between vinegar samples from mulberry and cherry barrels and between those of juniper and oak. The former group is characterized by analytes with high molecular weights, such as furfural and esters, while the latter group shows more intense peaks for ethyl benzoate. Moreover, ethyl benzoate appears to predominantly influence samples from chestnut barrels. Due to the highly complex production process of ABTM, where each battery is influenced by several factors, this study's findings are specific to the current experimental conditions. Hydrogel-based flexible electronic devices have great potential in human motion monitoring, electronic skins, and human-computer interaction applications; hence, the efficient preparation of highly sensitive hydrogel-based flexible sensors is important. In the present work, the ultrafast polymerization of a hydrogel (1–3 min) was achieved by constructing a tannic acid (TA)-Fe3+ dynamic redox system, which endowed the hydrogel with good adhesion performance (the adhesion strength in wood was 17.646 kPa). In addition, the uniform dispersal ensured by incorporating polydopamine-decorated polypyrrole (PPy@PDA) into the hydrogel matrix significantly improved the hydrogel's stretching ability (575.082%). The as-prepared PAM/CS/PPy@PDA/TA hydrogel-based flexible sensor had a high-fidelity low detection limit (strain = 1%), high sensitivity at small strains (GF = 5.311 at strain = 0–8%), and fast response time (0.33 s) and recovery time (0.25 s), and it was reliably applied to accurate human motion monitoring and handwriting recognition. Process design critically depends on the characterization of fuels and their kinetics under process conditions. This study steps beyond the fundamental methods of thermogravimetry to modulated (MTGA) and Hi-Res™ (high resolution) techniques to (1) add characterization detail and (2) increase the utility of thermal analysis data. Modulated TGA methods overlay sinusoidal functions on the heating rates to determine activation energy as a function of temperature with time. Under devolatilization conditions, Hi-Res™ TGA maintains a constant mass loss with time and temperature. These two methods, run independently or overlaid, offer additional analysis in which multiple samples at different heating rates are run to different final temperatures. Advanced methods allow researchers to use fewer samples by conducting fewer runs, targeting practical experimental designs, and quantifying errors easier. The parameters of the studies included here vary the heating rate at 10, 30, and 50 °C/min; vary gas-phase oxygen for pyrolysis or combustion conditions; and particle size ranges of 100–125 µm, 400–425 µm, and 600–630 µm. The two biomass fuels used in the studies are pinewood from Northern Sweden and wheat straw. The influence of torrefaction is also included at temperatures of 220, 250, and 280 °C. Apparent activation energy results align with the previous MTGA data in that combustion conditions yield higher values than pyrolysis conditions—200–250 kJ/mol and 175–225 kJ/mol for pine and wheat combustion, respectively, depending on pre-treatment. Results show the dependence of these parameters upon one another from a traditional thermal analysis approach, e.g., the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method, as well as MTGA and Hi-Res™ thermogravimetric investigations to show future directions for thermal analysis techniques. This study presents findings regarding the kinetics of ferrous iron oxidation in solution mediated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria within a continuous-flow bioreactor employing diverse types of immobilizers. The objective is to augment the rate of ferrous iron oxidation in solutions utilizing an immobilizer for Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strains. Immobilization represents a promising avenue for enhancing the efficiency of Fe2⁺ oxidation via acidophilic ferrooxidizing bacteria, leading to a several-fold increase in oxidation rate. A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different types of immobilizer in facilitating iron oxidation within a continuous-flow bioreactor, including the application of wood chips coated with Fe(OH)3. The results indicate that wood chips coated with iron hydroxide serve as effective type of immobilizer, facilitating the robust attachment of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans via electrostatic interactions between negatively charged bacteria and positively charged surfaces. Experimental investigations were conducted using novel immobilization matrices in pilot-scale tests simulating the underground borehole leaching (UBL) of uranium. The bioactivation of leaching solutions enhances the efficiency and environmental compatibility of UBL compared to conventional chemical oxidation methods. The relationships between redox potential and ferric iron content in bioactivated solutions during the UBL of uranium were delineated. The significance of this study lies in its elucidating the pivotal role of Fe2⁺ oxidation in uranium extraction processes, particularly in the context of UBL. By employing bioactivation mediated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, the study demonstrates not only enhanced uranium extraction efficiency, but also markedly improved environmental sustainability compared to traditional chemical oxidation methods. In this study, we introduce a novel application of wood as the construction material for Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) containers, developing what we term the Wooden Membrane-less Microbial Fuel Cell (WML-MFC). This innovative approach leverages the natural properties of wood to enhance the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of MFCs. Employing three different types of wood—pine, oak, and black locust—the WML-MFC design incorporates a carbon felt anode inside the wooden container and a carbon cloth cathode wrapped externally. This configuration not only protects the cathode from biofouling but also utilizes the inherent moisture management capabilities of wood to maintain operational stability. The performance of these wooden MFCs was assessed in terms of electricity generation and water treatment efficacy. Pine and oak containers achieved maximum power densities (MPD) of 35 mW/m^2 and 4 mW/m^2, respectively, with corresponding maximum open-circuit voltages of 551 mV and 269 mV. Black locust showed the least effective bioelectricity generation. COD removal efficiency was observed between 18 and 48% for pine and 3% to 39% for oak over hydraulic retention times of 24–48 h. Notable water loss due to moisture diffusion was recorded at 20%/day in pine and 6%/day in oak. Durability assessments through DMA and SEM analyses confirmed the suitability of wood as a container material, emphasizing the dual environmental and economic benefits of this WML-MFC design. The aim of this work is to evaluate two quantitative methods, based on the external calibration applied in laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis, known as (i) analytical curve and (ii) one-point calibration, using the concept of matrix matching to quantify three potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in wood samples. These can biologically register changes in the abiotic environment and be applied to monitoring climate change or environmental toxicity. In this case, standard sample preparation was evaluated to prepare the standard pellets using Pinus taeda species as a matrix-matching concept. Six pellets of P. taeda, with different Pb, Cd, and Ba concentrations, were prepared to build the analytical curve and one-point calibration strategies. The LA-ICP-MS parameters were optimised for 206Pb, 208Pb, 112Cd, 114Cd, 137Ba, and 138Ba isotope analysis in wood samples. The two calibration strategies provided 74–110% analytical recovery from certified reference materials and similar results to those obtained by ICP-MS through the acid digestion of environmental wood samples from São Paulo City (Brazil). This demonstrated the applicability of the one-point calibration strategy in quantifying PTEs in wood samples, which could be used with environmental analyses. Differences observed between the Ba isotope results obtained via LA-ICP-MS and ICP-MS quantification were related to sampling by LA-ICP-MS and the ICP-MS sample introduction, as well as to laser matrix and transport effects because of the difference between the wood species evaluated. Spruce wood is widely used in outdoor applications, but its susceptibility to degradation under exposure to sunlight and moisture is a major concern. This study investigates the impact of accelerated aging on spruce wood's surface chemistry, microstructure, geometry, and discoloration. The study was performed in two outdoor aging modes: dry and wet. The accelerated aging effects were evident in the changes in spruce wood structure, as well as in the other studied properties. During aging, it developed significant discoloration. Under simulated rainless outdoor conditions (dry mode), spruce wood gradually became dark brown. Under conditions involving rain (wet mode), the discoloration was qualitatively different from the dry mode. FTIR spectroscopy showed that during the accelerated aging of wood, lignin was mainly degraded, especially in the early stages of the process. A linear correlation was found between the changes in lignin and the color changes in the wood. There was an increase in carbonyl groups in the dry mode, which contributed to the color change and was also influenced by changes in extractives. The wet mode caused the leaching out of carbonyl groups. The observed decrease in cellulose crystallinity, together with the degradation of hydrophobic lignin, may result in the increased hydrophilicity of photodegraded wood. For both modes, there were different changes in the wood micro- and macrostructure, reflected in the surface morphology. The roughness increased during the aging process in both modes. The slightest changes in the roughness parameters were identified in the grain direction in the dry mode; the most evident was that the roughness parameters increased perpendicular to the grain in the wet mode. The demonstrated mechanism backing up the aging-related changes to the spruce wood structure and the relations unveiled between these changes and the changes in the spruce wood surface properties can provide an issue point for seeking ways how to mitigate the negative effects of the environmental factors the wood is exposed to. Concerns on the expanding infestation of several Acacia species in the southern Mediterranean European countries have triggered an ever-growing requirement for costly targeted control actions. Valorizing biomass waste produced could help promote and better finance these actions. For that purpose, wood wastes from invasive control actions were tested regarding their pulp and paper potential, aiming to entice cellulose industries to partake in future conservation actions. Wood waste from the five most pervasive Acacia species was studied (Acacia dealbata Link, Acacia longifolia Willd, Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Acacia melanoxylon R.Br, and Acacia saligna Labill) regarding physical and chemical characteristics, and a central composite design was used to optimize alkali charge and reaction temperature on pulping yield and delignification. Bleached kraft pulps were produced with each species' optimized conditions and for an equitable mixture of all species. Optimized pulp yields (52.6%–53.5%) and pulp polymerization degree (2867–3690) of Acacia species were higher than those of Eucalyptus globulus Labill (used as reference). Optimized bleached pulps were refined and fiber, pulp, and handsheet properties determined. Acacia dealbata and A. longifolia presented high specific wood consumption and lower handsheet strength properties, pointing to overall lower pulping potential, while A. melanoxylon and A. mearnsii characteristics were equal to or higher than those of E. globulus. A. saligna pulp and handsheet characteristics appear more suited for tissue paper. The Acacia mixture achieved acceptable characteristics, enabling the indiscriminate use of Acacia wood regardless of the species. As a shortcoming, the Acacia pulps showed the worst optical characteristics, with brightness dropping substantially with beating (64%–76%) when compared to E. globulus (81%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wood Textile Composites (WTCs) represent a new and innovative class of materials in the field of natural fiber composites. Consisting of fabrics made from willow wood strips (Salix americana) and polypropylene (PP), this material appears to be particularly suitable for structural applications in lightweight construction. Since the threads of the fabric are significantly oversized compared to classic carbon or glass rovings, fundamental knowledge of the mechanical properties of the material is required. The aim of this study was to investigate whether WTCs exhibit classic behavior in terms of fiber composite theory and to classify them in relation to comparable composite materials. It was shown that WTCs meet all the necessary conditions for fiber-reinforced composites in tensile, bending, and compression tests and can be classified as natural-fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites. In addition, it was investigated whether delamination between the fiber and matrix can be simulated by using experimentally determined mechanical data as input. Using finite element analysis (FEA), it was shown that the shear stress components of a stress tensor in the area of the interface between the fiber and matrix are responsible for delamination in the composite material. The surface roughness and wettability of wood are critical aspects to consider when producing laminated wood products with adhesive applications. This study aims to investigate the surface roughness and dynamic wettability of Jabon wood in the presence of melamine formaldehyde (MF)-based adhesives. Commercial MF adhesives (MF-0) and modified MF adhesives (MF-1) were applied to Jabon wood, which includes tangential (T), radial (R), and semi-radial (T/R) surfaces. The surface roughness of Jabon wood was assessed using a portable stylus-type profilometer. The low-bond axisymmetric drop shape analysis (LB-ADSA) method was employed to identify the contact angle (θ) of the MF-based adhesives on Jabon wood. The wettability was determined by evaluating the constant contact angle change rate (K value) using the Shi and Gardner (S/G) model. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was employed to investigate the viscoelastic characteristics of the interphase analysis of the wood and MF-based adhesives. The roughness level (Ra) of the Jabon board ranged from 5.62 to 6.94 µm, with the T/R having a higher level of roughness than the R and T. MF-0 exhibited a higher K value (0.262–0.331) than MF-1 (0.136–0.212), indicating that MF-0 wets the surface of Jabon wood more easily than MF-1. The wood–MF-0 interphase reached a maximum stiffness of 957 N/m at 123.0 °C, while the wood–MF-1 had a maximum stiffness of 2734 N/m at 110.5 °C. In addition, the wood–MF-0 had a maximum storage modulus of 12,650 MPa at a temperature of 128.9 °C, while the wood–MF-1 had a maximum storage modulus of 22,950 MPa at 113.5 °C. Toona ciliata, also known as Chinese mahogany, is a high-quality and fast-growing wood species with a high economic value. The wood properties of T. ciliata of different provenances vary significantly. In this study, we conducted comprehensive transcriptome and metabolome analyses of red and non-red T. ciliata wood cores of different provenances to compare their wood properties and explore the differential metabolites and genes that govern the variation in their wood properties. Through combined analyses, three differential genes and two metabolites were identified that are possibly related to lignin synthesis. The lignin content in wood cores from T. ciliata of different provenances shows significant variation following systematic measurement and comparisons. The gene Tci09G002190, one of the three differential genes, was identified as a member of the CAD (Cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase) gene family of T. ciliata, which is associated with lignin synthesis. Our data provide insights into the determinants of the wood properties in T. ciliata, providing a solid foundation for research into the subsequent mechanisms of the formation of T. ciliata wood. Background: Wood apple (Limonia acidissima) has been reported to possess various pharmacological activities. The present study aimed to evaluate the 11 selected constituents of Wood apple (L. acidissima) as potent anti-dandruff and anti-acne agents using a molecular docking approach. Materials and Methods: The 11 selected constituents of Wood apple were studied on the molecular docking behavior of Malassezia globosa Lipase-1 and Cutibacterium acnes beta-keto acyl synthase-III enzymes by using the patchdock method. Furthermore, STITCH analysis was carried out to determine the ligand-protein interactions. STITCH analysis reveals that two ligands, namely, psoralen and umbelliferone, have exhibited interactions with both the M. globosa and P. acnes KPA 171202 proteins. Results: The docking studies revealed that isopimpinellin and saponarin exhibited the highest (ACE) atomic contact energy (-162.32 and - 318.63 kcal/mol) with that of M. globosa Lipase-1 and C. acnes beta-ketoacyl synthase-III, respectively. Conclusion: Thus, the present finding provides new knowledge for understanding the 11 selected ligands of Wood apple (L. acidissima) as potent anti-dandruff and anti-acne agents. Methanol, also known as wood alcohol, is a common hazardous by-product of alcoholic beverage fermentation and serves as a crucial indicator for assessing the safety of alcoholic beverages. However, the metabolic mechanisms of methanol production during the solid-state fermentation of Chinese Baijiu remain unclear. In this study, we sought to determine the primary stage of methanol production in Chinese Baijiu by measuring the methanol content at different stages of fermentation. High-throughput multi-omics sequencing techniques were employed to elucidate methanol metabolic pathways and associated microorganisms. In addition, a comprehensive analysis incorporating environmental factors and microbial interactions was conducted to explore their combined effects on methanol production. Methanol was predominantly produced during pit fermentation, with the most significant increase observed within the first seven days. Microorganisms such as Pichia kudriavzevii, Byssochlamys spectabilis, Penicillium, and Aspergillus played a regulatory role in methanol content during the first seven days through their involvement in butyrate and methane metabolic pathways and pectin degradation modules. During Baijiu production, various types of molds and yeasts participate in methanol production. Differences in their abundance within fermentation cycles may contribute to variations in methanol content between stages. Lactobacillus accumulated abundantly in the first seven days in each stage, suppressing methanol-metabolizing microorganisms. Olive quick decline syndrome (OQDS) is a devastating plant disease caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Xf). Exploratory missions in the Salento area led to the identification of putatively Xf-resistant olive trees (putatively resistant plants, PRPs) which were pauci-symptomatic or asymptomatic infected plants belonging to different genetic clusters in orchards severely affected by OQDS. To investigate the defense strategies employed by these PRPs to contrast Xf infection, the PRPs were analyzed for the anatomy and histology of xylem vessels, patterns of Xf distribution in host tissues (by the fluorescent in situ hybridization technique—FISH) and the presence of secondary metabolites in stems. The xylem vessels of the PRPs have an average diameter significantly lower than that of susceptible plants for each annual tree ring studied. The histochemical staining of xylem vessels highlighted an increase in the lignin in the parenchyma cells of the medullary rays of the wood. The 3D images obtained from FISH-LSM (laser scanning microscope) revealed that, in the PRPs, Xf cells mostly appeared as individual cells or as small aggregates; in addition, these bacterial cells looked to be incorporated in the autofluorescence signal of gels and phenolic compounds regardless of hosts' genotypes. In fact, the metabolomic data from asymptomatic PRP stems showed a significant increase in compounds like salicylic acid, known as a signal molecule which mediates host responses upon pathogen infection, and luteolin, a naturally derived flavonoid compound with antibacterial properties and with well-known anti-biofilm effects. Findings indicate that the xylem vessel geometry together with structural and chemical defenses are among the mechanisms operating to control Xf infection and may represent a common resistance trait among different olive genotypes. When utilizing microspheres to construct structural color layers on wood surfaces, the cellular structure of wood can influence the self-assembly of microspheres and the resulting structural color layers. To investigate this influence, seven types of wood were selected in this study, and structural color layers were constructed on their surfaces. A comparative analysis was conducted on the color production and macro and micro morphologies of the structural color layers on different wood surfaces, along with an examination of the types and causes of surface defects. The study found that when a microsphere-containing emulsion was applied to a wood surface, the emulsion tended to flow along the vessels of hardwood and the tracheids of softwood. Overflow or seepage of the emulsion could lead to a reduction in the number of microspheres per unit area, resulting in uneven thickness and uneven color generation of the structural color layers. Although the structural color layers on different wood exhibited the same color, there were variations in their tones, appearance, and morphology. Defects such as minor bumps and pits were present on the structural color layers. Bump defects might originate from microsphere encapsulation of fiber bundles or the displacement of air within vessel lumens by emulsion, while pits were mainly caused by the inflow of emulsion into the vessel lumens. This study clarified the influence of wood surface cells, particularly vessels and tracheids, on the construction and color production of structural color layers, providing support for the controllable modification of wood surfaces using structural colors. The genus Melia is known for its secondary metabolites and recently, this genus is being explored for its timber. There are vast differences among its species. For instance, Melia azedarach is reported to be invasive and while another species, M. dubia, has diverse utility with complex germination and regeneration characteristics. Researchers globally have been working on various aspects of this genus; In this study, using topic modelling and science mapping approach, we attempted to understand research facets on this genus. The literature corpus of the Web of Science database was explored using a single keyword—"Melia" which yielded 1523 publications (1946–2022) and after scrutiny metadata of 1263 publications were used in the study. Although nine individual species were cited in the publications, only three species are accepted viz., M. dubia, M. azedarach, and M. volkensii. This implies taxonomic uncertainty, with potential confusion in assigning scientific findings to particular species. Thus, a taxonomic relook on this genus is warranted for a better assessment of the economic utility in many countries. More importantly, our results indicate that the research interests have recently shifted from the secondary metabolite constituents towards growth, biomass, wood properties, germination, plantation, and green synthesis. The shift in research focus toward wood properties of Melia sp. can impact the wood demand–supply at a global scale owing to its fast growth and the possibility of cultivation over a wider geographical range. The thermo-chemical conversion of biomass wastes is a practical approach for the value-added reclamation of bioenergy in large quantities, and pyrolysis plays a core role in this process. In this work, poplar (PR) and cedar (CR) were used as staple wood biomasses to investigate the apparent kinetics of TG/DTG at different heating rates. Secondly, miscellaneous wood chips (MWC), in which PR and CR were mixed in equal proportion, were subjected to comprehensive investigations on their pyrolysis behavior and product evolution in a fixed bed reactor with pyrolysis temperature, catalyst, and the flow rate H2O steam as influencing factors. The results demonstrated that both PR and CR underwent three consecutive pyrolysis stages, the TG/DTG curves shifted to higher temperatures, and the peak temperature intervals also enhanced as the heating rate increased. The kinetic compensation effect expression and apparent reaction kinetic model of CR and PR pyrolysis were obtained based on the law of mass action and the Arrhenius equation; the reaction kinetic parameter averages of Ea and A of its were almost the same, which were about 72.38 kJ/mol and 72.36 kJ/mol and 1147.11 min−1 and 1144.39 min−1, respectively. The high temperature was beneficial for the promotion of the pyrolysis of biomass, increased pyrolysis gas yield, and reduced tar yield. This process was strengthened in the presence of the catalyst, thus significantly increasing the yield of hydrogen-rich gas to 117.9 mL/g-biomass. It was observed that H2O steam was the most effective activator for providing a hydrogen source for the whole reaction process, promoted the reaction to proceed in the opposite direction of H2O steam participation, and was beneficial to the production of H2 and other hydrocarbons. In particular, when the flow rate of H2O steam was 1 mL/min, the gas yield and hydrogen conversion were 76.94% and 15.90%, and the H2/CO was 2.07. The yields of H2, CO, and CO2 in the gas formation were significantly increased to 107.35 mL/g-biomass, 53.70 mL/g-biomass, and 99.31 mL/g-biomass, respectively. Therefore, H2 was the most dominant species among gas products, followed by C-O bond-containing species, which provides a method for the production of hydrogen-rich gas and also provides ideas for compensating or partially replacing the fossil raw material for hydrogen production. Those who work with wood should have a basic knowledge of wood anatomy and chemistry so they can understand how different anatomical and chemical features influence wood properties and, in turn, how these properties contribute to different treatments and final wood utilization. However, little attempt has been made to map global research trends in wood anatomy and chemistry. This paper presents a bibliometric review of research trends in wood anatomy and chemistry to determine research trends and gaps in these research areas. A total of 183 publications on wood anatomy and chemistry from 1974 to 2023 were reviewed. The analysis was done with the VOSviewer software (version 1.6.13). The analysis focused on the bibliographic coupling of countries, co-authorship of authors, citation of documents, and co-occurrence of keywords, which were presented as network visualization maps. The findings revealed that the wood anatomy and chemistry publication trends, although not completely gradient, have been upwards since 2000. Countries including Germany, the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Brazil, the Netherlands, China, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the Czech Republic, Canada, Australia, Chile, Finland, France, Sweden, and Japan had a great impact on this research area. It also became evident that African countries lag in this area of research. Only one data source - Scopus - was used. It has a wide coverage of publications from diverse areas and provides researchers with information on the most important academic literature in any specific scientific domain. Introduction: Hybrid poplars are industrial trees in China. An understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying wood formation in hybrid poplars is necessary for molecular breeding. Although the division and differentiation of vascular cambial cells is important for secondary growth and wood formation, the regulation of this process is largely unclear. Methods: In this study, mPagGRF15 OE and PagGRF15-SRDX transgenic poplars were generated to investigate the function of PagGRF15. RNA-seq and qRT-PCR were conducted to analyze genome-wide gene expression, while ChIP-seq and ChIP-PCR were used to identified the downstream genes regulated by PagGRF15. Results and discussion: We report that PagGRF15 from hybrid poplar (Populus alba × P. glandulosa), a growth-regulating factor, plays a critical role in the regulation of vascular cambium activity. PagGRF15 was expressed predominantly in the cambial zone of vascular tissue. Overexpression of mPagGRF15 (the mutated version of GRF15 in the miR396 target sequence) in Populus led to decreased plant height and internode number. Further stem cross sections showed that the mPagGRF15 OE plants exhibited significant changes in vascular pattern with an increase in xylem and a reduction in phloem. In addition, cambium cell files were decreased in the mPagGRF15 OE plants. However, dominant suppression of the downstream genes of PagGRF15 using PagGRF15-SRDX showed an opposite phenotype. Based on the RNA-seq and ChIP-seq results, combining qRT-PCR and ChIP-PCR analysis, candidate genes, such as WOX4b, PXY and GID1.3, were obtained and found to be mainly involved in cambial activity and xylem differentiation. Accordingly, we speculated that PagGRF15 functions as a positive regulator mediating xylem differentiation by repressing the expression of the WOX4a and PXY genes to set the pace of cambial activity. In contrast, PagGRF15 mediated the GA signaling pathway by upregulating GID1.3 expression to stimulate xylem differentiation. This study provides valuable information for further studies on vascular cambium differentiation mechanisms and genetic improvement of the specific gravity of wood in hybrid poplars. In trees, injuries resulting from subfreezing temperatures can cause damage to the cellular biofilm system, metabolic functions, and fibrous reticulum, and even cell death. Investigating the occurrence of freezing damage and its contributing factors could help understand the mechanisms underlying freezing injury and prevent the subsequent damage in trees. To achieve this, a laboratory experiment was conducted using cut wood samples from Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc) and Simon poplar (Populus simonii Carr.), and the effects of environmental freezing factors, including freezing temperatures, freezing duration, and cooling rate, on the temperature at which freezing injuries occur were examined using the electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method. The semi-lethal temperature (LT50), as an indicator of freezing injury in wood tissue, was theoretically deduced based on the measured extracellular resistance (re) using EIS. The contributory factors to changes in LT50 were determined and their relationship was established. The results revealed that all freezing factors exhibited significant effects on electrical impedance characteristics (re, ri, and t), significantly influencing the LT50 of the wood. Random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) models were used to assess the contribution of the freezing factors and moisture content (MC). Among the factors examined, freezing duration had the greatest impact on LT50, followed by the MC, whereas the contribution of the cooling rate was minimal. The model accuracies were 0.89 and 0.86 for Korean pine and Simon poplar, respectively. The findings of our study illustrate that the occurrence of freezing injury in trees is primarily influenced by the duration of freezing at specific subzero temperatures. Primary and secondary growth of trees are needed for increments in plant height and stem diameter, respectively, affecting the production of woody biomass for applications in timber, pulp/paper, and related biomaterials. These two types of growth are believed to be both regulated by distinct transcription factor (TF)-mediated regulatory pathways. Notably, we identified PtrLBD39, a highly stem phloem-specific TF in Populus trichocarpa and found that the ectopic expression of PtrLBD39 in P. trichocarpa markedly retarded both primary and secondary growth. In these overexpressing plants, the RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that PtrLBD39 directly or indirectly regulates TFs governing vascular tissue development, wood formation, hormonal signaling pathways, and enzymes responsible for wood components. This regulation led to growth inhibition, decreased fibrocyte secondary cell wall thickness, and reduced wood production. Therefore, our study indicates that, following ectopic expression in P. trichocarpa, PtrLBD39 functions as a repressor influencing both primary and secondary growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of fast-growing Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) is limited due to low dimensional stability and weak mechanical strength. Silica sol can effectively improve fast-growing fir wood's physical and mechanical properties. In order to clarify the influence of impregnation process parameters on the modification effect, the effect of the vacuum impregnation variants (e.g., pre-vacuum time, pre-vacuum pressure, pressurization time, and pressurization pressure) was discussed using the orthogonal test approach. The optimal modification process was determined by comparing the water absorption and nail-holding power under different modification processes. The range analysis and variance analysis methods were used to study the correlation between process factors and the performance of the modified wood. The results showed that the water absorption and nail-holding power of fast-growing fir wood were significantly improved via vacuum impregnating with silica sol. The optimum process parameters for water absorption and nail-holding power of fast-growing fir as the pre-vacuum time was 30 min, the pre-vacuum pressure was −0.08 MPa, the pressurization time was 3 h, and the pressurization pressure was 1.2 MPa. Forests are critical in the terrestrial carbon cycle, and the knowledge of their response to ongoing climate change will be crucial for determining future carbon fluxes and climate trajectories. In areas with contrasting seasons, trees form discrete annual rings that can be assigned to calendar years, allowing to extract valuable information about how trees respond to the environment. The anatomical structure of wood provides highly-resolved information about the reaction and adaptation of trees to climate. Quantitative wood anatomy helps to retrieve this information by measuring wood at the cellular level using highresolution images of wood micro-sections. However, whereas large advances have been made in identifying cellular structures, obtaining meaningful cellular information is still hampered by the correct annual tree ring delimitation on the images. This is a time-consuming task that requires experienced operators to manually delimit ring boundaries. Classic methods of automatic segmentation based on pixel values are being replaced by new approaches using neural networks which are capable of distinguishing structures, even when demarcations require a high level of expertise. Although neural networks have been used for tree ring segmentation on macroscopic images of wood, the complexity of cell patterns in stained microsections of broadleaved species requires adaptive models to accurately accomplish this task. We present an automatic tree ring boundary delineation using neural networks on stained cross-sectional microsection images from beech cores. We trained a UNETR, a combined neural network of UNET and the attention mechanisms of Visual Transformers, to automatically segment annual ring boundaries. Its accuracy was evaluated considering discrepancies with manual segmentation and the consequences of disparity for the goals of quantitative wood anatomy analyses. In most cases (91.8%), automatic segmentation matched or improved manual segmentation, and the rate of vessels assignment to annual rings was similar between the two categories, even when manual segmentation was considered better. The application of convolutional neural networks-based models outperforms human operator segmentations when confronting ring boundary delimitation using specific parameters for quantitative wood anatomy analysis. Secondary development is a key biological characteristic of woody plants and the basis of wood formation. Exogenous nitrogen can affect the secondary growth of poplar, and some regulatory mechanisms have been found in the secondary xylem. However, the effect of nitrogen on cambium has not been reported. Herein, we investigated the effects of different nitrogen concentrations on cambium development using combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis. The results show that, compared with 1 mM NH4NO3 (M), the layers of hybrid poplar cambium cells decreased under the 0.15 mM NH4NO3 (L) and 0.3 mM NH4NO3 (LM) treatments. However, there was no difference in the layers of hybrid poplar cambium cells under the 3 mM NH4NO3 (HM) and 5 mM NH4NO3 (H) treatments. Totals of 2365, 824, 649 and 398 DEGs were identified in the M versus (vs.) L, M vs. LM, M vs. HM and M vs. H groups, respectively. Expression profile analysis of the DEGs showed that exogenous nitrogen affected the gene expression involved in plant hormone signal transduction, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway and the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway. In M vs. L, M vs. LM, M vs. HM and M vs. H, differential metabolites were enriched in flavonoids, lignans, coumarins and saccharides. The combined analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome showed that some genes and metabolites in plant hormone signal transduction, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and starch and sucrose metabolism pathways may be involved in nitrogen regulation in cambium development, whose functions need to be verified. In this study, from the point of view that nitrogen influences cambium development to regulate wood formation, the network analysis of the transcriptome and metabolomics of cambium under different nitrogen supply levels was studied for the first time, revealing the potential regulatory and metabolic mechanisms involved in this process and providing new insights into the effects of nitrogen on wood development. Harvested wood products (HWP) may contribute to climate change mitigation by storing carbon and by replacing energy‐intensive materials and fossil energy, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, when assessing improved HWP utilisations, interactions between wood use pathways, the carbon stock dynamics, and the resulting effect on the GHG balance are still not well‐understood. This research aims to assess the carbon sequestration effects of alternative wood product utilisations in four European Union (EU) countries. We conducted a material flow analysis of wood uses in France, Finland, Germany, and Spain for 2017 taking into account national production, imports, and exports. Then, we quantified the future dynamics of carbon stock in the HWP through time, assuming the same as in 2017 input and ignoring the forest sink. We then ran six alternative scenarios: two energy‐focused (Energy, Energy+), two material‐focused (Cascading, Material), one with extended half‐life of the wood products (HL) and one as business as usual. For the simulation period (2020–2050), the material scenario leads to the highest mitigation benefits with a cumulative HWP net CO2 removals of −502 Mt CO2 for Germany, −290 Mt CO2 for France, −118 Mt CO2 for Spain, and −116 Mt CO2 for Finland over the 30 years. The Energy+ scenario with an increase in wood usage for bioenergy generates a loss of the HWP pool of 351, 80, 77, and 6 Mt CO2 for the same countries, not accounting for energy substitution effects. Overall, our results suggest that the HWP carbon stock can be increased in the short‐medium term by prioritizing the use of wood for material purposes, while maintaining constant harvest. The HWP mitigation potential differed greatly according to national wood industry characteristics. Hence, tailoring the HWP mitigation strategies to the specific characteristics of the national wood chain would enhance the HWP climate benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Plant A/T-rich protein and zinc-binding protein (PLATZ) are plantspecific transcription factors playing a role in plant development and stress response. To assess the role of PLATZs in vascular system development and wood formation in poplar, a functional study for PtaPLATZ18, whose expression was associated with the xylem, was carried out. Methods: Poplar dominant repressor lines for PtaPLATZ18 were produced by overexpressing a PtaPLATZ18-SRDX fusion. The phenotype of three independent transgenic lines was evaluated at morphological, biochemical, and molecular levels and compared to the wild type. Results: The PtaPLATZ18-SRDX lines showed increased plant height resulting from higher internode length. Besides, a higher secondary xylem thickness was also evidenced in these dominant repression lines as compared to the wild type suggesting an activation of cambial activity. A higher amount of lignin was evidenced within wood tissue as compared to the wild type, indicating an alteration in cell wall composition within xylem cell types. This latter phenotype was linked to an increased expression of genes involved in lignin biosynthesis and polymerization. In this research, acetylation was applied under industrial conditions to improve the properties of Turkey oak and Pannonia poplar wood. Both species are potential "climate winners" in Hungary, yet they are currently underused due their low durability and poor dimensional stability. The acetylation modification process may be a suitable method to improve their properties. In order to verify the effectiveness of the process, comparative chemical analyses (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, extractives, ash, buffering capacity, and pH) of the untreated and acetylated heartwood and sapwood were carried out for both species for the first time. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy was also used to support the evaluation of the chemical analyses. The weight percent gain was 11.54% for poplar and 0.94% for Turkey oak, indicating poor treatment efficiency for the latter. The cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin contents changed significantly in poplar, with the highest change (+81%) induced by acetylating the hemicelluloses. Only the alpha-cellulose content decreased significantly in Turkey oak, presumably due to the degradation of the non-crystalline part of the cellulose. Acetylation may improve the resistance of Pannonia poplar against moisture, weather, decay, and wood-boring insects, but the process parameters need to be optimized in order to prevent degradation and discoloration in poplar. The circular economy forces societies to take actions aimed at giving post-consumer products a "second life". As we know, wood is perfect for this. Moreover, reusing wood helps keep carbon in circulation, thus limiting its emissions into the atmosphere. It turns out that extensive research on determining the durability of wood is very useful and valuable for one more reason. Well, they can be used to create a model to determine the usefulness of wood, which has only apparently lost its utility value during many years of exposure to external factors. The research subject was samples of wood impregnated with protection agents and modified, originating from many years of field tests. The aim of the research was to correlate the results of wood durability determined after a period of exposure in open space with the results of determining the potential usefulness of such wood. On this basis, a model for determining the value of post-consumer wood was created. As a main result of post-consumer wood analysis, the high durabilities against C. puteana with mass loss below 3% were noticed for acetylated, furfurylated, and CCA-treated wood. When wood is thermally modified, several chemical reactions take place that change the chemical and physical properties of the wood. These changes correlate with the degree of modification, which is mostly a function of the temperature and duration of modification, and consequently with the mass loss during this process. There is a lack of standardised quality control to verify the degree of heat treatment of wood and thus its quality. One of the possible methods to check the degree of thermal modification of a particular type of wood is thermogravimetry (TG). It is based on the assumption that processes that did not take place during thermal modification continue when the TG experiment is carried out. In this method, calibration curves have to be established based on TG measurements of standard samples that have been thermally modified at different temperatures and whose mass loss during modification is known. The calibration curves show the mass loss during the TG measurement as a function of the mass loss during the previous thermal modification. The course of thermal decomposition during the TG measurements is influenced by many parameters, such as the mass of the sample, the heating rate, the atmosphere in which the measurement takes place, and the shape of the crucible in which the sample is placed. In this paper, the influence of these parameters on the calibration curves was investigated. We have focused on oak wood. The best parameters result in a calibration curve with the largest correlation coefficient R2 and the highest slope of the line k. On this basis, we can determine the mass loss during the thermal modification of unknown samples of the same wood species under the same measurement conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research studies found that Case-Based Method (CBM) and Project-Based Learning (PBL) models increase student motivation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. However, so far, the success of implementing these models has mostly been based on learning outcomes. Not many research studies have been carried out to reveal the effectiveness of these models by analyzing the learning process. This research is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to analyze classroom communication on solving problems in Chemistry lessons implementing the CBM and PBL models using Transcript Based Lesson Analysis (TBLA). TBLA is an analysis method based on communication occurring in the classroom. In this research, TBLA analyzes the classroom communication on solving problems in the Wood Chemistry course at the Department of Chemistry Education, Lambung Mangkurat University, Indonesia. A total of 26 students were involved. The classroom communication was recorded by camcorders and the data were transformed into transcripts. The data was processed using Excel to produce a TBLA graph. The results show that (1) the ratio of lecturer and student communication intensity using the CBM model in the classroom is 1:3, and the PBL model is 1:1. (2) The CBM model provides a good environment for the development of student HOTS through in-depth multi-directional communication patterns in the problem-solving process. (3) PBL builds better collaboration between students compared to the CBM model. This research implies that the quality of classroom communication can be improved by integrating the HOTS questions and independent group work as implemented in the CBM and PBL models. Ideal thermomechanical treatment conditions that reduce roughness and increase hydrophobicity of the wood surface require further investigation. In this study, a thermo-mechanical densification process was applied to Gmelina arborea (gamhar) wood. Three temperatures were used (140 °C, 160 °C and 180 °C) and two compaction rates (20 % and 40 %), applied for 30 minutes in a hot hydraulic press with final pressure of 2,5 MPa. Chemical changes, wettability and surface roughness of control and densified samples were investigated, as well as morphological changes. Densification partially degraded the hemicelluloses. Consequently, the wettability of the tangential surface of the densified wood decreased, with a more hydrophobic surface. Similarly, densification reduced surface roughness, especially when filtering was used for natural wood structures, with morphological changes on the surface of the densified samples. Densification with the highest temperature (180 °C) and 20 % compaction created the most hydrophobic surface (>90 °). In contrast, densification with the lowest temperature (140 °C) and compaction of 40 % provided the best results of the roughness parameters, with significant reductions, making it an applicable technique to minimize the roughness of wood in general and improve surface quality.
