Linear regression (LR) is used to predict thermochemical properties of alkanes at temperatures (0-1000) K to study chemical reaction equilibria inside zeolites. The thermochemical properties of C 1 until C 10 isomers reported by Scott are used as training data sets in the LR model which is used to predict these properties for alkanes longer than C 10 isomers. Second-order groups are used as independent variables which account for the interactions between the neighboring groups of atoms. This model accurately predicts Gibbs free energies, enthalpies, Gibbs free energies of formation, and enthalpies of formation for alkanes which exceeds the chemical accuracy of 1 kcal/mol and outperforms the group contribution methods developed by Benson et al., Joback and Reid, and Constantinou and Gani. Predictions from our model are used to compute the reaction equilibrium distribution of hydroisomerization of C 10 and C 14 isomers in MTW-type zeolite. Calculation of reaction equilibrium distribution inside zeolites also requires Henry coefficients of the isomers which can be computed using classical force field-based molecular simulations using the RASPA2 software for which we created an automated workflow. The reaction equilibrium distribution for C 10 isomers obtained using the LR model and the training data set for this model are in very good agreement. The tools developed in this study will enable the computational study of hydroisomerization of long-chain alkanes (>C 10 ).

The thermophysical properties of aqueous electrolyte solutions are of interest for applications such as water electrolyzers and fuel cells. Molecular dynamics (MD) and continuous fractional component Monte Carlo (CFCMC) simulations are used to calculate densities, transport properties (i.e., self-diffusivities and dynamic viscosities), and solubilities of H 2 and O 2 in aqueous sodium and potassium hydroxide (NaOH and KOH) solutions for a wide electrolyte concentration range (0-8 mol/kg). Simulations are carried out for a temperature and pressure range of 298-353 K and 1-100 bar, respectively. The TIP4P/2005 water model is used in combination with a newly parametrized OH - force field for NaOH and KOH. The computed dynamic viscosities at 298 K for NaOH and KOH solutions are within 5% from the reported experimental data up to an electrolyte concentration of 6 mol/kg. For most of the thermodynamic conditions (especially at high concentrations, pressures, and temperatures) experimental data are largely lacking. We present an extensive collection of new data and engineering equations for H 2 and O 2 self-diffusivities and solubilities in NaOH and KOH solutions, which can be used for process design and optimization of efficient alkaline electrolyzers and fuel cells.

Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been considered as possible electrolytes for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to value-added products such as formic and oxalic acids. The applicability of pure DES as electrolytes is hindered by high viscosities. Mixtures of DES with organic solvents can be a promising way of designing superior electrolytes by exploiting the advantages of each solvent type. In this study, densities, viscosities, diffusivities, and ionic conductivities of mixed solvents comprising DES (i.e., reline and ethaline), methanol, and propylene carbonate were computed using molecular simulations. To provide a quantitative assessment of the affinity and mass transport of CO 2 and oxalic and formic acids in the mixed solvents, the solubilities and self-diffusivities of these solutes were also computed. Our results show that the addition of DES to the organic solvents enhances the solubilities of oxalic and formic acids, while the solubility of CO 2 in the ethaline-containing mixtures are in the same order of magnitude with the respective pure organic components. A monotonic increase in the densities and viscosities of the mixed solvents is observed as the mole fraction of DES in the mixture increases, with the exception of the density of ethaline-propylene carbonate which shows the opposite behavior due to the high viscosity of the pure organic component. The self-diffusivities of all species in the mixtures significantly decrease as the mole fraction of DES approaches unity. Similarly, the self-diffusivities of the dissolved CO 2 and the oxalic and formic acids also decrease by at least 1 order of magnitude as the composition of the mixture shifts from the pure organic component to pure DES. The computed ionic conductivities of all mixed solvents show a maximum value for mole fractions of DES in the range from 0.2 to 0.6 and decrease as more DES is added to the mixtures. Since for most mixtures studied here no prior experimental measurements exist, our findings can serve as a first data set based on which further investigation of DES-containing electrolyte solutions can be performed for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to useful chemicals.

Thermochemical heat-storage applications, based on the reversible endo-/exothermic hydration reaction of salts, are intensively investigated to search for compact heat-storage devices. To achieve a truly valuable storage system, progressively complex salts are investigated. For these salts, the equilibrium temperature and pressure conditions are not always easy to predict. However, these conditions are crucial for the design of thermochemical heat-storage systems. A biased grand-canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) tool is developed, enabling the study of equilibrium conditions at the molecular level. The GCMC algorithm is combined with reactive force field molecular dynamics (ReaxFF), which allows bond formation within the simulation. The Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) potential is used to scan multiple trial positions for the GCMC algorithm at a small cost. The most promising trial positions can be selected for recomputation with the more expensive ReaxFF. The developed WCA-ReaxFF-GCMC tool was used to study the hydration of MgCl 2 · n H 2 O. The simulation results show a good agreement with experimental and thermodynamic equilibriums for multiple hydration levels. The hydration shows that water, present at the surface of crystalline salt, deforms the surface layers and promotes further hydration of these deformed layers. Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently gained much attention as water-immiscible solvents for a wide range of applications. However, very few studies exist in which the hydrophobicity of these DESs is quantified. In this work, the interfacial properties of hydrophobic DESs with water were computed at various temperatures using molecular dynamics simulations. The considered DESs were tetrabutylammonium chloride-decanoic acid (TBAC-dec) with a molar ratio of 1:2, thymol-decanoic acid (Thy-dec) with a molar ratio of 1:2, and dl-menthol-decanoic acid (Men-dec) with a molar ratio of 2:1. The following properties were investigated in detail: interfacial tensions, water-in-DES solubilities (and salt-in-water solubilities for TBAC-dec/water), density profiles, and the number densities of hydrogen bonds. Different ionic charge scaling factors were used for TBAC-dec. Thy-dec and Men-dec showed a high level of hydrophobicity with negligible computed water-in-DES solubilities. For charge scaling factors of 0.7 and 1 for the thymol and decanoic acid components of Thy-dec, the computed interfacial tensions of the DESs are in the following order: TBAC-dec (ca. 4 mN m -1 ) < Thy-dec (20 mN m -1 ) < Men-dec (26 mN m -1 ). The two sets of charge scaling factors for Thy-dec did not lead to different density profiles but resulted in considerable differences in the DES/water interfacial tensions due to different numbers of decanoic acid-water hydrogen bonds at the interfaces. Large peaks were observed for the density profiles of (the hydroxyl oxygen of) decanoic acid at the interfaces of all DES/water mixtures, indicating a preferential alignment of the oxygen atoms of decanoic acid toward the aqueous phase.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are widely used in drug delivery, catalysis, food and separation processes. In this work, a comprehensive simulation study on the diffusion of the native α -, β - and γ -CDs in aqueous solutions is carried out using Molecular Dynamics simulations. The effect of the system size on the computed self-diffusivity is investigated and it is found that the required correction can be as much as 75% of the final value. The effect of the water force field is examined and it is shown that the q4md-CD/TIP4P/2005 force field combination predicts the experimentally measured self-diffusion coefficients of CDs very accurately. The self-diffusion coefficients of the three native CDs were also computed in aqueous-NaCl solutions using the Joung and Cheatham (JC) and the Madrid-2019 force fields. It is found that Na + ions have higher affinity towards the CDs when the JC force field is used and for this reason the predicted diffusivity of CDs is lower compared to simulations using the Madrid-2019 force field. As a model system for drug delivery and waste-water treatment applications, the diffusion of the β -CD:Ibuprofen inclusion complex in water is studied. In agreement with experiments for similar components, it is shown that the inclusion complex and the free β -CD have almost equal self-diffusion coefficients. Our analysis revealed that this is most likely caused by the almost full inclusion of the ibuprofen in the cavity of the β -CD. In arson cases, evidence such as DNA or fingerprints is often destroyed. One of the most important evidence modalities left is relating fire accelerants to a suspect. When gasoline is used as accelerant, the aim is to find a strong indication that a gasoline sample from a fire scene is related to a sample of a suspect. Gasoline samples from a fire scene are weathered, which prohibits a straightforward comparison. We combine machine learning, thermodynamic modeling, and quantum mechanics to predict the composition of unweathered gasoline samples starting from weathered ones. Our approach predicts the initial (unweathered) composition of the sixty main components in a weathered gasoline sample, with error bars of ca. 4% when weathered up to 80% w/w. This shows that machine learning is a valuable tool for predicting the initial composition of a weathered gasoline, and thereby relating samples to suspects.

Kirkwood-Buff (KB) integrals provide a connection between microscopic properties and thermodynamic properties of multicomponent fluids. The estimation of KB integrals using molecular simulations of finite systems requires accounting for finite size effects. In the small system method, properties of finite subvolumes with different sizes embedded in a larger volume can be used to extrapolate to macroscopic thermodynamic properties. KB integrals computed from small subvolumes scale with the inverse size of the system. This scaling was used to find KB integrals in the thermodynamic limit. To reduce numerical inaccuracies that arise from this extrapolation, alternative approaches were considered in this work. Three methods for computing KB integrals in the thermodynamic limit from information of radial distribution functions (RDFs) of finite systems were compared. These methods allowed for the computation of surface effects. KB integrals and surface terms in the thermodynamic limit were computed for Lennard-Jones (LJ) and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) fluids. It was found that all three methods converge to the same value. The main differentiating factor was the speed of convergence with system size L . The method that required the smallest size was the one which exploited the scaling of the finite volume KB integral multiplied by L . The relationship between KB integrals and surface effects was studied for a range of densities.

It is known that thermodynamic properties of a system change upon confinement. To know how, is important for modelling of porous media. We propose to use Hill's systematic thermodynamic analysis of confined systems to describe two-phase equilibrium in a nanopore. The integral pressure, as defined by the compression energy of a small volume, is then central. We show that the integral pressure is constant along a slit pore with a liquid and vapor in equilibrium, when Young and Young-Laplace's laws apply. The integral pressure of a bulk fluid in a slit pore at mechanical equilibrium can be understood as the average tangential pressure inside the pore. The pressure at mechanical equilibrium, now named differential pressure, is the average of the trace of the mechanical pressure tensor divided by three as before. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we computed the integral and differential pressures, p ^ and p , respectively, analysing the data with a growing-core methodology. The value of the bulk pressure was confirmed by Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. The pressure difference times the volume, V , is the subdivision potential of Hill, ( p - p ^ ) V = ϵ . The combined simulation results confirm that the integral pressure is constant along the pore, and that ϵ / V scales with the inverse pore width. This scaling law will be useful for prediction of thermodynamic properties of confined systems in more complicated geometries.

Recently, β-cyclodextrin (βCD)-based polymers with enhanced adsorption kinetics and high removal capacity of organic micropollutants (OMPs) and uptake rates have been synthesized and tested experimentally. Although the exact physical-chemical mechanisms via which these polymers capture the various types of OMPs are not yet fully understood, it is suggested that the inclusion complex formation of OMPs with βCD is very important. In this study, the inclusion complex formation of OMPs with βCD in an aqueous solution is investigated by using the well-established attach-pull-release method in force field-based molecular dynamics simulations. A representative set of OMPs is selected based on the measured occurrences in surface and ground waters and the directives published by the European Union. To characterize the formation of the inclusion complex, the binding free energies, enthalpies, and entropies are computed and compared to experimental values. It is shown that computations using the q4md-CD/GAFF/Bind3P force field combination yield binding free energies that are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results for all OMPs studied. The binding enthalpies are decomposed into the main contributing interaction types. It is shown that, for all studied OMPs, the van der Waals interactions are favorable for the inclusion complexion and the hydrogen bond formation of the guest with the solvent and βCD plays a crucial role in the binding mechanism. Our findings show that MD simulations can adequately describe the inclusion complex formation of βCD with OMPs, which is the first step toward understanding the underlying mechanisms via which the βCD-based polymers capture OMPs.

The accurate description of the behavior of fluids in nanoporous materials is of great importance for numerous industrial applications. Recently, a new approach was reported to calculate the pressure of nanoconfined fluids. In this approach, two different pressures are defined to take into account the smallness of the system: the so-called differential and the integral pressures. Here, the effect of several factors contributing to the confinement of fluids in nanopores are investigated using the definitions of the differential and integral pressures. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are performed in a variation of the Gibbs ensemble to study the effect of the pore geometry, fluid-wall interactions, and differential pressure of the bulk fluid phase. It is shown that the differential and integral pressure are different for small pores and become equal as the pore size increases. The ratio of the driving forces for mass transport in the bulk and in the confined fluid is also studied. It is found that, for small pore sizes (i.e., < 5 σ fluid ), the ratio of the two driving forces considerably deviates from 1.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a new generation of green solvents, which are considered an environmentally friendly alternative to ionic liquids and volatile organic compounds. The addition of controlled amounts of water to DESs has a significant effect on their microscopic structure and thus on their thermodynamic and transport properties. In this way, DESs can be modified, leading to solvents with improved characteristics. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to obtain a better understanding of the relation between the microscopic structure, molecular interactions, and thermophysical properties of aqueous reline and ethaline solutions at temperatures ranging from 303.15 to 363.15 K. For both reline and ethaline solutions, the hydrogen bond (HB) networks disappear with increasing mass fraction of water, and the intensity of radial distribution function (RDF) peaks decreases. For a mass fraction of water of 40%, most of the HBs between the compounds of reline and ethaline are broken, and DESs are fully dissolved in water. Consequently, a monotonic decrease in viscosities and an increase in self-diffusion coefficients are observed. Ionic conductivities show a nonmonotonic behavior with increasing water content. Up to 60% water mass fraction, the ionic conductivities increase with increasing water content. A further increase in the mass fraction of water decreases conductivities. For all studied systems, the HB network and the peaks of RDFs show relatively small changes for water mass fractions below 5% and beyond 40%. The MD results show that viscosities decrease with temperature, while diffusivities and ionic conductivities increase. The effect of the temperature on the structure of DES-water mixtures is negligible.

Crown-ethers have recently been used to assemble porous liquids (PLs), which are liquids with permanent porosity formed by mixing bulky solvent molecules (e.g., 15-crown-5 ether) with solvent-inaccessible organic cages. PLs and crown-ethers belong to a novel class of materials, which can potentially be used for gas separation and storage, but their performance for this purpose needs to be assessed thoroughly. Here, we use molecular simulations to study the gas separation performance of crown-ethers as the solvent of porous liquids. The TraPPE force field for linear ether molecules has been adjusted by fitting a new set of torsional potentials to accurately describe cyclic crown-ether molecules. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been used to compute densities, shear viscosities, and self-diffusion coefficients of 12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6 ethers. In addition, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations have been used to compute the solubility of the gases CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 in 12-crown-4 and 15-crown-5 ether. The computed properties are compared with available experimental data of crown-ethers and their linear counterparts, i.e., polyethylene glycol dimethyl ethers.

Molecular Monte Carlo simulations are used to compute the three-phase (hydrate-liquid water-gas) equilibrium lines of methane and carbon dioxide hydrates, using the Transferable Potentials for Phase Equilibria model for carbon dioxide, the united atom optimized potential for liquid simulations model for methane, and the TIP4P/Ice and TIP4P/2005 models for water. The three-phase equilibrium temperatures have been computed for pressures between 50 and 4000 bar via free-energy calculations. The computed results are as expected for methane hydrates but deviate from the direct-coexistence molecular dynamics (MD) studies for carbon dioxide hydrates. At pressures higher than 1000 bar, both the methane and carbon dioxide hydrates dissociate at lower temperatures than expected from experiments and MD studies. The dissociation enthalpy is found to be largely independent on water models, and its values are measured to be 7.6 and 6.0 kJ/mol of water for methane hydrates and carbon dioxide hydrates, respectively. We evaluate the effect of systematic errors on the determination of chemical potentials and show that systematic errors of 0.1 kJ/mol in the chemical potential of water correspond to deviations of 5 K in the three-phase equilibrium temperatures.

Cation exchange is a powerful tool for the synthesis of nanostructures such as core-shell nanocrystals, however, the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. Interactions of cations with ligands and solvent molecules are systematically ignored in simulations. Here, we introduce the concept of pseudoligands to incorporate cation-ligand-solvent interactions in molecular dynamics. This leads to excellent agreement with experimental data on cation exchange of PbS nanocrystals, whereby Pb ions are partially replaced by Cd ions from solution. The temperature and the ligand-type control the exchange rate and equilibrium composition of cations in the nanocrystal. Our simulations reveal that Pb ions are kicked out by exchanged Cd interstitials and migrate through interstitial sites, aided by local relaxations at core-shell interfaces and point defects. We also predict that high-pressure conditions facilitate strongly enhanced cation exchange reactions at elevated temperatures. Our approach is easily extendable to other semiconductor compounds and to other families of nanocrystals.

Despite observations of massive methane release and geohazards associated with gas hydrate instability in nature, as well as ductile flow accompanying hydrate dissociation in artificial polycrystalline methane hydrates in the laboratory, the destabilising mechanisms of gas hydrates under deformation and their grain-boundary structures have not yet been elucidated at the molecular level. Here we report direct molecular dynamics simulations of the material instability of monocrystalline and polycrystalline methane hydrates under mechanical loading. The results show dislocation-free brittle failure in monocrystalline hydrates and an unexpected crossover from strengthening to weakening in polycrystals. Upon uniaxial depressurisation, strain-induced hydrate dissociation accompanied by grain-boundary decohesion and sliding destabilises the polycrystals. In contrast, upon compression, appreciable solid-state structural transformation dominates the response. These findings provide molecular insight not only into the metastable structures of grain boundaries, but also into unusual ductile flow with hydrate dissociation as observed during macroscopic compression experiments.
