We investigate the electronic properties of a semiconductor quantum ring with an elliptical shape and non-uniform height, allowing for distributed quantum-dot-like bulges along its perimeter. The adiabatic approximation and the finite element method are combined to calculate the allowed electron states in the structure under the effective mass approximation, considering the contributions from Rashba and Dresselahaus spin–orbit interactions and the Zeeman effect in the presence of an applied magnetic field. We discuss the features of the calculated spectra for two different ring geometries: a symmetric one with four dot-like bulges, and an asymmetric one with three hilled protuberances. The information about those states allows us to evaluate the linear optical absorption response associated with interlevel transitions between the ground and lowest excited states. This phenomenon takes place at resonant energies of only a few milielectronvolts. It is observed that spin–orbit interactions tend to quench this response under zero-field conditions in the case of symmetric confinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We theoretically investigate the properties of an electron energy spectrum in a double GaAs-Al
0.3 Ga0.7 As quantum ring by using the effective mass and adiabatic approximations, together with a realistic description of the confining potential profile, which is assumed to be deformed due to the application of an intense nonresonant laser field. The effects of the applied magnetic field and spin-orbit interaction are included. We discuss the features of the lowest confined energy levels under a variation of magnetic field strengths and intense laser parameters. The influence of this external probe on the linear optical absorption response associated with interlevel transitions is analyzed by considering both the presence and absence of spin-orbit effects. Vertically coupled quantum dots have emerged as promising structures for various applications such as single photon sources, entangled quantum pairs, quantum computation, and quantum cryptography. We start with a structure composed of two vertically coupled GaAs conical quantum dots surrounded by Al x Ga 1 − x , and the effects of the applied electric and magnetic fields on the energies are evaluated using the finite element method. In addition, the effects are evaluated by including the presence of a shallow-donor impurity. The electron binding energy behavior is analyzed, and the effects on the photoionization cross-section are studied. Calculations are carried out in the effective mass and parabolic conduction band approximations. Our results show a notable dependence on the electric and magnetic fields applied to the photoionization cross-section. In general, it has been observed that both the electric and magnetic fields are useful parameters for inducing blueshifts of the resonant photoionization cross-section structure, which is accompanied by a drop in its magnitude. Taking into consideration the research that has been conducted on the optical and electrical properties of molecular systems, especially the good thermoelectric energy conversion at a nanometric scale that such systems have presented, here we present a new alternative by using a particular diphenyl-ether molecule as a functional device. Such a molecular system is modeled as a planar segment coupled to two electrodes in the first-neighbor approximation within a tight-binding Hamiltonian. We study the electrical and thermal properties of diphenyl-ether molecules such as the electric current, electrical and thermal conductance, Seebeck coefficient, and figure of merit, in the strong and weak coupling regimes, considering different structural configurations and variations with temperature. Our results could be valuable for laboratory applications and/or verification since we characterize the diphenyl-ether molecule as a semiconductor device for different structural models. We investigated the impact of a non-resonant intense laser, structural defects, and magnetic fields on the electronic and optical properties of a simple GaAs quantum ring under the inverse quadratic Hellmann potential, using the effective mass and parabolic band approximations. We obtained the energies and wavefunctions by solving the 2D Schrodinger's equation using the finite-element numerical technique to analyze this. We considered circular polarization to calculate the dipole matrix elements, which were influenced by the laser field and structural defects in the system. This enabled us to study the linear absorption coefficients. Our results demonstrated that the presence of a laser field and a structural defect disrupt the axial symmetry of the problem. When only the non-resonant laser was present, a pattern of excited states appeared in pairs, which oscillated with the magnetic field. However, the amplitude of the oscillation decreased as the magnetic field strength increased, and these oscillations disappeared when the structural defect was introduced. It was also noted that the intensity and position of the linear optical absorption peaks exhibited a non-monotonic behavior with the magnetic field in the absence of a structural defect. However, this behavior changed when the structural defect was present, depending on the type of polarization (right or left circular). Finally, a clear improvement in the absorption peaks with an increase in the laser parameter is reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spintronic devices, i.e., those utilizing the interaction of magnetic moments with electric voltages and currents in magnetic nanostructures, offer an exceptionally promising set of candidates for future electronic memory needs. Recently, the possibility of reversing the magnetization of nanoscale magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices using the spin transfer torque (STT) effect has attracted the attention of industry and academia, since STT-MRAM has been demonstrated to be a strong candidate for a high speed, high density, and high endurance nonvolatile memory. Further, by replacing the current-driven (e.g., STT) switching mechanism for a voltage-controlled effect, a novel magnetoelectric RAM (MeRAM) architecture could result in considerable improvements in terms of density and dissipated energy during switching, both factors which are limited in STT-MRAM by the large currents required. In this dissertation, the possibility of exploiting the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect on nanoscale MTJ devices as the driving mechanism for MeRAM will be introduced. Experimental results on the demonstration of current-assisted and purely voltage-controlled switching in the thermally-activated and precessional regimes are presented. The write energies in VCMA-driven switching of nanoscale MTJs are shown to be at least one order of magnitude smaller compared to STT-based schemes. The advantages and challenges in terms of scalability and energy-efficiency of this voltage-driven approach are discussed. Further, a compact model for co-simulation of VCMA-driven MTJs with CMOS is established and validated against experimental data. The compact model is refined by the parameters extracted from a detailed characterization of the voltage-driven dynamics in these devices. This includes experimental results on the accurate characterization of the temperature dependence of the perpendicular anisotropy and the VCMA effect in MTJs, as well as on the influence of higher order anisotropies over MTJ dynamics measured via ferromagnetic resonance (FMR).

- Abstract
Ecotechnologies for wastewater treatment (EWWT) have been used as a cost-effective alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods for improving the removal of organic carbon, nutrients and pathogenic microorganisms from wastewater. However, due to biochemical transformations of organic matter and nutrients EWWT are net sources of CO2, CH4 and N2O greenhouse gases (GHGs), which may be transferred into the atmosphere contributing to global warming.Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ecotechnologies for Wastewater Treatment provides scientific information about greenhouse gas, such as CO2, CH4 and N2O, generation and emissions from different municipal EWWT. The main EWWT considered in this book are anaerobic ponds, facultative ponds, duckweed-based ponds, and a freshwater natural wetland perturbed by anthropogenic activities such as wastewater discharge and nutrients from agricultural run-off. The book includes a full literature review of recent publications about GHGs emissions from EWWT. It also introduces the calculation of GHGs flux using a static chamber technique. Besides, the book presents information on the influence of environmental factors such as temperature, pH, DO, and nutrients on GHG emissions produced in EWWT under tropical conditions. This book will be a useful reference for researches and students interested in the broader area of water and climate change subjects. The publication may also be of interest to policy makers concerned with climate change, water sector planning, and wastewater treatment.

- Abstract
Greenhouse gases such as CH4, CO2 and N2O were measured in a Small-Decentralized Sewage Treatment (SDST). The system consisted of an up-flow anaerobic filter (UAF) and two constructed wetlands (CWs) operating in parallel. The constructed wetlands were planted with Heliconia sp L. (HCW) y C. papyrus. (PCW). The results showed that GHG average (daytime and nighttime) emissions from UAF (1.8 - 8.9 g.m-2.d-1 CO2; 8.3 y 45 g.m-2.d-1 CH4) were higher than measured in HCW (-5.1 y 5.5 gCO2.m-2.d-1; 10 y 556 mgCH4.m-2.d-1; -4 and 40 mgN2O.m- 2.d-1) and PCW (-0.85 to 6.5 gCO2.m-2.d-1; 2.3 and 1590 mgCH4.m-2.d-1; -7 y 12 mgN2O.m-2.d-1). A statistical test showed that there were not significant differences between GHG flux (daytime-nigh-time) measured in HCW and PCW (p<0.05). Further, the variations on GHG could be explained by water temperature, photoperiod, NH4 + and dissolved oxygen mainly. High temperature stimulates GHG production. Photoperiod in CWS increased CO2 and CH4 sequestration. Further, the presence of dissolved oxygen and NH4 + influenced N2O production. Overall, in this study was determined that SDST act like a net source of GHG emitting 0.7 kg CO2eq. (PCW).

Their use leads to a reduction in greenhouse – gas emissions during decarbonation in the clinkering stage in the cement production process; It decreases energy consumption due to the fact that the additions replace the Clinker, which is processed at temperatures of up to 1500°C, and the productive costs per ton of Clinker are greater than the ton of slag or pozzolans. Cementos Argos S.A. is searching for additions that are optimal as supplementary materials, therefore supports research like this. In this research, we studied three (3) types of slag (EHE, ERE and ERF) from a metallurgical company in the Department of Córdoba, Colombia. In this study, the tests aimed at identifying the main characteristics of the slag from this metallurgical industry to evaluate its possible use as an addition in Portland cement from a pozzolanic and latent hydraulic perspective. Characterization studies were conducted on these materials to evaluate the chemical, physical and mineralogical properties slag must meet to determine its hydraulic and/or pozzolanic capability. Subsequently, we conducted a study of its effects in mixtures with cement pastes and mortars with different percentages of replacement. To verify the pozzolanic nature, advanced materials characterization techniques were applied; these included the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X Ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTG / DSC) and microcalorimetry. The latter were made to achieve a better understanding of the hydration products. It was found that the ERE and EHE slags are suitable for use as pozzolans, although they failed to have a high reactivity, despite being siliceous and aluminous and having an amorphous structure according to the X – ray fluorescence (XFR) and XRD diffraction. Additionally, these slags improved cement hydration as binary mixtures, even without a high reduction of the Portland content at ages such as 28, 56 and 90 days. This reaction was validated according to the results obtained by electron microscopy and DTG / DSC. In spite of its acceptable performance, it is necessary to revise regulations for the restrictions with magnesium oxide, since the addition of these two (2) slags could not permit the use in Portland cement. Based on the chemical analysis results of the ERF slag, its suitability to be used as Hydraulic was established. Unfortunately, its use represents a high risk for the durability of the products that are elaborated with these cements, since they have high alkali for alkali – silica reactions and the presence of periclase. Additionally, ERF slag affects the initial setting time, leaving it out of the regulations regarding the production of cement in Colombia. Finally, it was concluded that the EHE and ERE slags can be used as supplementary materials without significantly affecting the resistances of the reference cement in percentages of five percent (5%) and ten percent (10%). Furthermore, it was concluded that if substitutions were made at percentages of more than 30%, sufficient mechanical strength would be attained to meet current regulations for type I cement in ASTM C109 Maestría

In developing countries, constructed wetlands are attractive systems with low operational and maintenance costs in terms of wastewater treatment. However, by reducing the pollution load of wastewater they might contribute to produce some greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. This research compared two ornamental species and assessed the emissions of these gases through the use of static cameras in three full-scale constructed wetlands of which two were planted: one with Heliconia psittacorum, one with Phragmites australis, and the third one, which was not planted, was the control wetland. Each one of them received a hydraulic load of 3.5 m³d-1, which is equivalent to a nominal hydraulic retention time of 1.8 days. In addition, physicochemical characterizations were performed. Efficiency was between 66.2% and 87.8% for COD; on average, the temperature was between 29 and 31 °C, and the pH was between 6.3 and 7, in both planted and unplanted systems. Additionally, no significant differences in the vegetation studied were found. We conclude that the ornamental species used do not affect the emission of greenhouse gases in the systems analyzed.
