Abstract

This paper introduces VIVRA (Voice Interactive Virtual Reality Annotation), a VR application combining multimodal interaction with large language models (LLMs) to transform users' ideas into interactive 3D visualizations. VIVRA converts verbalized thoughts into "idea balloons" that summarize and expand on detected topics by an LLM. VIVRA allows users to verbalize their thoughts in real time or record their ideas to display the topics later. We evaluated the effectiveness of VIVRA in an exploratory study with 29 participants and a user study with 10 participants. Our results show that VIVRA enhanced users' ability to reflect on and develop ideas, achieving high levels of satisfaction, usability, and engagement. Participants valued VIVRA as a reflective tool for exploring personal thoughts and ideas. We discuss the potential advantages and uses of this application, highlighting the potential of combining immersive technologies with LLMs to create powerful ideation and reflection tools., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

This article presents constraints on dark-matter-electron interactions obtained from the first underground data-taking campaign with multiple SuperCDMS HVeV detectors operated in the same housing. An exposure of 7.63 g-days is used to set upper limits on the dark-matter-electron scattering cross section for dark matter masses between 0.5 and 1000 MeV/$c^2$, as well as upper limits on dark photon kinetic mixing and axion-like particle axioelectric coupling for masses between 1.2 and 23.3 eV/$c^2$. Compared to an earlier HVeV search, sensitivity was improved as a result of an increased overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent, an anticoincidence event selection, and better pile-up rejection. 4. The Ginsburg--Sands theorem and computability theory

Abstract

The Ginsburg--Sands theorem from topology states that every infinite topological space has an infinite subspace homeomorphic to exactly one of the following five topologies on $\omega$: indiscrete, discrete, initial segment, final segment, and cofinite. The original proof is nonconstructive, and features an interesting application of Ramsey's theorem for pairs ($\mathsf{RT}^2_2$). We analyze this principle in computability theory and reverse mathematics, using Dorais's formalization of CSC spaces. Among our results are that the Ginsburg-Sands theorem for CSC spaces is equivalent to $\mathsf{ACA}_0$, while for Hausdorff spaces it is provable in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. Furthermore, if we enrich a CSC space by adding the closure operator on points, then the Ginsburg-Sands theorem turns out to be equivalent to the chain/antichain principle ($\mathsf{CAC}$). The most surprising case is that of the Ginsburg-Sands theorem restricted to $T_1$ spaces. Here, we show that the principle lies strictly between $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ and $\mathsf{RT}^2_2$, yielding arguably the first natural theorem from outside logic to occupy this interval. As part of our analysis of the $T_1$ case we introduce a new class of purely combinatorial principles below $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ and not implied by $\mathsf{RT}^2_2$ which form a strict hierarchy generalizing the stable Ramsey's theorem for pairs ($\mathsf{SRT}^2_2$). We show that one of these, the $\Sigma^0_2$ subset principle ($\Sigma^0_2$-$\mathsf{Subset}$), has the property that it, together with the cohesive principle ($\mathsf{COH}$), is equivalent over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$ to the Ginsburg--Sands theorem for $T_1$ CSC spaces., Comment: Updated version

Abstract

A computable graph $\mathcal{G}$ is computably categorical relative to a degree $\mathbf{d}$ if and only if for all $\mathbf{d}$-computable copies $\mathcal{B}$ of $\mathcal{G}$, there is a $\mathbf{d}$-computable isomorphism $f:\mathcal{G}\to\mathcal{B}$. In this paper, we prove that for every computable partially ordered set $P$ and computable partition $P=P_0\sqcup P_1$, there exists a computable computably categorical graph $\mathcal{G}$ and an embedding $h$ of $P$ into the c.e. degrees where $\mathcal{G}$ is computably categorical relative to all degrees in $h(P_0)$ and not computably categorical relative to any degree in $h(P_1)$. The $^3$He(n,p) process is excellent for neutron detection between thermal and $\sim$4\,MeV because of the high cross section and near-complete energy transfer from the neutron to the proton. Traditional gaseous $^3$He detectors using this process typically have high levels of radiogenic backgrounds so that they cannot measure the small neutron fluxes present in underground labs for dark matter experiments. Abstract

Normal numbers were introduced by Borel. Normality is certainly a weak notion of randomness; for instance, there are computable numbers which are absolutely normal. In the present paper, we introduce a relativization of normality to a fixed representation system. When we require normality with respect to large sets of such systems, we find variants of normality that imply randomness notions much stronger than absolute normality. The primary classes of numbers investigated in this paper are the supernormal numbers and the highly normal numbers, which we will define. These are relativizations of normality which are robust to all reasonable changes of representation. Among other results, we give a proof that the highly normal numbers are exactly those of computable dimension 1, which we think gives a more natural characterization than was previously known of this interesting class.

Abstract

We measured the nuclear--recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a mono-energetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4\,keV down to 100\,eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100\,eV. These results call for further investigation of the ionization yield theory and a comprehensive determination of the detector response function at energies below the keV scale.

Abstract

We present a new analysis of previously published of SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood framework to search for sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering these possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that are undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to $220~\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ at $2.7 \times 10^{-30}~\textrm{cm}^2$ via the bremsstrahlung channel. The Migdal channel search provides overall considerably more stringent limits and excludes DM masses down to $30~\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ at $5.0 \times 10^{-30}~\textrm{cm}^2$., Comment: Submitted to PRD

16. The Effects of Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) on Student Achievement and Engagement

Abstract

This study determined the effects of Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) on student achievement and engagement in physical science. A one-group pretest/posttest pre-experimental research design was employed. The participants were Grade 11 students (n=30) in a public stand-alone senior high school in Congressional District 1, Quezon City, Philippines, who were selected using purposive sampling. This study utilized five research instruments: (1) OCL-based lesson plans, (2) Learning Activity Sheets (LAS), (3) Physical Science Achievement Test (PSAT), (4) CIP Engagement Questionnaire, and (5) Student Learning Experience Survey. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative data were obtained from the validated 40-item achievement test and the adopted engagement questionnaire, while responses to the Student Learning Experience Survey provided qualitative data. Paired t-test was employed to determine the significant difference in achievement and engagement before and after the OCL's implementation. The results showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest mean scores of the students in the achievement and engagement in physical science. Likewise, there was a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest mean scores for all engagement factors: cooperation, interest, and participation. The result of the survey revealed that students' exposure to the OCL strategy was effective in facilitating significant improvements in their achievement and engagement in physical science. Overall, the findings signified that Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) as a teaching-learning strategy enhanced students' achievement and engagement in physical science.

17. Neutron capture-induced nuclear recoils as background for CE$\nu$NS~measurements at reactors

Abstract

Nuclear reactors represent a promising neutrino source for CE$\nu$NS (coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering) searches. However, reactor sites also come with high ambient neutron flux. Neutron capture-induced nuclear recoils can create a spectrum that strongly overlaps the CE$\nu$NS signal for recoils $\lesssim$\,100\,eV for nuclear reactor measurements in silicon or germanium detectors. This background can be particularly critical for low-power research reactors providing a moderate neutrino flux. In this work we quantify the impact of this background and show that, for a measurement 10\,m from a 1\,MW reactor, the effective thermal neutron flux should be kept below $\sim$~7$\times$~10$^{-4}$\,n/cm$^2$s so that the CE$\nu$NS events can be measured at least at a 5$\sigma$ level with germanium detectors in 100~kg\,yr exposure time. This flux corresponds to 60\% of the sea-level flux but needs to be achieved in a nominally high-flux (reactor) environment. Improved detector resolution can help the measurements, but the thermal flux is the key parameter for the sensitivity of the experiment. For silicon detectors, the constraint is even stronger and thermal neutron fluxes must be near an order of magnitude lower. This constraint highlights the need of an effective thermal neutron mitigation strategy for future low threshold CE$\nu$NS searches. In particular, the neutron capture-induced background can be efficiently reduced by active veto systems tagging the deexcitation gamma following the capture., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

18. Intrinsic Fano factor of nuclear recoils for dark matter searches

Abstract

Nuclear recoils in germanium and silicon are shown to have much larger variance in electron-hole production than their electron-recoil counterparts for recoil energies between 10 and 200\,keV. This effect--owing primarily to deviations in the amount of energy given to the crystal lattice in response to a nuclear recoil of a given energy--has been predicted by the Lindhard model. We parameterize the variance in terms of an intrinsic nuclear recoil Fano factor which is 24.3$\pm$0.2 and 26$\pm$8 at around 25\,keV for silicon and germanium respectively. The variance has important effects on the expected signal shapes for experiments utilizing low-energy nuclear recoils such as direct dark matter searches and coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering measurements., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Dark matter is estimated to make up ~84% of all normal/baryonic matter, but cannot be directly imaged. Despite the fact that dark matter cannot be directly observed yet, its influence on the motion of stars and gas in spiral galaxies have been detected. One way to show motion in galaxies are rotation curves that are plots of velocity measurements of how fast stars and gas move in a galaxy around the center of mass. According to Newton's Law of Gravitation, the rotational velocity is an indication of the amount of visible and non-visible mass in the galaxy. Given that the visible matter is measurable using photometry, dark matter mass can therefore be estimated, offering an insight into the size distribution in galaxies. In order to gain a greater appreciation of the research scientists' findings about dark matter, their method should be easily reproduced by any curious individual. Our interactive workshop is an excellent educational tool to investigate how dark matter impacts the rotation of visible matter by providing a guide to produce galactic rotation curves. The Python-based notebooks are set up to walk you through the whole process of producing rotation curves using an online database (SPARC) and to allow you to learn about each component of the galaxy. The three steps of the rotation curve building process is plotting the measured velocity data, constructing the rotation curves for each component, and fitting the total velocity to the measured values., Comment: 6 pages, 1 table

Abstract

CDMSlite Run 2 was a search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with a cryogenic 600 g Ge detector operated in a high-voltage mode to optimize sensitivity to WIMPs of relatively low mass from 2 - 20 GeV/$c^2$. In this article, we present an effective field theory (EFT) analysis of the CDMSlite Run 2 data using an extended energy range and a comprehensive treatment of the expected background. A binned likelihood Bayesian analysis was performed on the recoil energy data, taking into account the parameters of the EFT interactions and optimizing the data selection with respect to the dominant background components. Energy regions within 5$\sigma$ of known activation peaks were removed from the analysis. The Bayesian evidences resulting from the different operator hypotheses show that the CDMSlite Run 2 data are consistent with the background-only models and do not allow for a signal interpretation assuming any additional EFT interaction. Consequently, upper limits on the WIMP mass and coupling-coefficient amplitudes and phases are presented for each EFT operator. These limits improve previous CDMSlite Run 2 bounds for WIMP masses above 5 GeV/$c^2$., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

ImportanceGlioblastoma is the most lethal primary brain cancer. Clinical outcomes for glioblastoma remain poor, and new treatments are needed.ObjectiveTo investigate whether adding autologous tumor lysate-loaded dendritic cell vaccine (DCVax-L) to standard of care (SOC) extends survival among patients with glioblastoma.Design, setting, and participantsThis phase 3, prospective, externally controlled nonrandomized trial compared overall survival (OS) in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma (nGBM) and recurrent glioblastoma (rGBM) treated with DCVax-L plus SOC vs contemporaneous matched external control patients treated with SOC. This international, multicenter trial was conducted at 94 sites in 4 countries from August 2007 to November 2015. Data analysis was conducted from October 2020 to September 2021.InterventionsThe active treatment was DCVax-L plus SOC temozolomide. The nGBM external control patients received SOC temozolomide and placebo; the rGBM external controls received approved rGBM therapies.Main outcomes and measuresThe primary and secondary end points compared overall survival (OS) in nGBM and rGBM, respectively, with contemporaneous matched external control populations from the control groups of other formal randomized clinical trials.ResultsA total of 331 patients were enrolled in the trial, with 232 randomized to the DCVax-L group and 99 to the placebo group. Median OS (mOS) for the 232 patients with nGBM receiving DCVax-L was 19.3 (95% CI, 17.5-21.3) months from randomization (22.4 months from surgery) vs 16.5 (95% CI, 16.0-17.5) months from randomization in control patients (HR = 0.80; 98% CI, 0.00-0.94; P = .002). Survival at 48 months from randomization was 15.7% vs 9.9%, and at 60 months, it was 13.0% vs 5.7%. Abstract

Recent experiments searching for sub-GeV/$c^2$ dark matter have observed event excesses close to their respective energy thresholds. Although specific to the individual technologies, the measured excess event rates have been consistently reported at or below event energies of a few-hundred eV, or with charges of a few electron-hole pairs. In the present work, we operated a 1-gram silicon SuperCDMS-HVeV detector at three voltages across the crystal (0 V, 60 V and 100 V). The 0 V data show an excess of events in the tens of eV region. Despite this event excess, we demonstrate the ability to set a competitive exclusion limit on the spin-independent dark matter--nucleon elastic scattering cross section for dark matter masses of $\mathcal{O}(100)$ MeV/$c^2$, enabled by operation of the detector at 0 V potential and achievement of a very low $\mathcal{O}(10)$ eV threshold for nuclear recoils. Comparing the data acquired at 0 V, 60 V and 100 V potentials across the crystal, we investigated possible sources of the unexpected events observed at low energy. The data indicate that the dominant contribution to the excess is consistent with a hypothesized luminescence from the printed circuit boards used in the detector holder.

Abstract

The SuperCDMS Collaboration is currently building SuperCDMS SNOLAB, a dark matter search focused on nucleon-coupled dark matter in the 1-5 GeV/c$^2$ mass range. Looking to the future, the Collaboration has developed a set of experience-based upgrade scenarios, as well as novel directions, to extend the search for dark matter using the SuperCDMS technology in the SNOLAB facility. The experienced-based scenarios are forecasted to probe many square decades of unexplored dark matter parameter space below 5 GeV/c$^2$, covering over 6 decades in mass: 1-100 eV/c$^2$ for dark photons and axion-like particles, 1-100 MeV/c$^2$ for dark-photon-coupled light dark matter, and 0.05-5 GeV/c$^2$ for nucleon-coupled dark matter. They will reach the neutrino fog in the 0.5-5 GeV/c$^2$ mass range and test a variety of benchmark models and sharp targets. The novel directions involve greater departures from current SuperCDMS technology but promise even greater reach in the long run, and their development must begin now for them to be available in a timely fashion. The experienced-based upgrade scenarios rely mainly on dramatic improvements in detector performance based on demonstrated scaling laws and reasonable extrapolations of current performance. Importantly, these improvements in detector performance obviate significant reductions in background levels beyond current expectations for the SuperCDMS SNOLAB experiment. Given that the dominant limiting backgrounds for SuperCDMS SNOLAB are cosmogenically created radioisotopes in the detectors, likely amenable only to isotopic purification and an underground detector life-cycle from before crystal growth to detector testing, the potential cost and time savings are enormous and the necessary improvements much easier to prototype., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021; v2 updated (assorted corrections and improvements to forecasts) October 2022; v3 updated (corrected SuperCDMS SNOLAB sensitivity curves in upgrade forecast plots in body of text) April 2023

Future dark matter direct detection experiments will reach unprecedented levels of sensitivity. Abstract

In this paper, we present a re-analysis of SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood approach to search for sub-GeV dark matter particles (DM) through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that would otherwise be undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to $220~\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ at $2.7 \times 10^{-30}~\textrm{cm}^2$ via the bremsstrahlung channel. The Migdal channel search excludes DM masses down to $30~\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ at $5.0 \times 10^{-30}~\textrm{cm}^2$., Comment: This paper is being withdrawn due to an error in data selection during the analysis. Abstract

Two photo-neutron sources, $^{88}$Y$^{9}$Be and $^{124}$Sb$^{9}$Be, have been used to investigate the ionization yield of nuclear recoils in the CDMSlite germanium detectors by the SuperCDMS collaboration. This work evaluates the yield for nuclear recoil energies between 1 keV and 7 keV at a temperature of $\sim$ 50 mK. We use a Geant4 simulation to model the neutron spectrum assuming a charge yield model that is a generalization of the standard Lindhard model and consists of two energy dependent parameters. We perform a likelihood analysis using the simulated neutron spectrum, modeled background, and experimental data to obtain the best fit values of the yield model. The ionization yield between recoil energies of 1 keV and 7 keV is shown to be significantly lower than predicted by the standard Lindhard model for germanium. There is a general lack of agreement among different experiments using a variety of techniques studying the low-energy range of the nuclear recoil yield, which is most critical for interpretation of direct dark matter searches. This suggests complexity in the physical process that many direct detection experiments use to model their primary signal detection mechanism and highlights the need for further studies to clarify underlying systematic effects that have not been well understood up to this point.

27. Microeconometric Approaches in Exploring the Relationships between Early Alert Systems and Student Retention: A Case Study of a Regionally Based University in Australia

Abstract

Early alert systems (EAS) are an important technological tool to help manage and improve student retention. Data spanning 16,091 students over 156 weeks was collected from a regionally based university in Australia to explore various microeconometric approaches that establish links between EAS and student retention outcomes. Controlling for numerous confounding variables, significant relationships between the EAS and student retention were identified. Capturing dynamic relationships between the explanatory variables and the hazard of discontinuing provides new insight into understanding student retention factors. We concluded that survival models are the best methods of understanding student retention when temporal data is available.

Abstract

Missing data is a common issue in many biomedical studies. Under a paired design, some subjects may have missing values in either one or both of the conditions due to loss of follow-up, insufficient biological samples, etc. Such partially paired data complicate statistical comparison of the distribution of the variable of interest between the two conditions. In this paper, we propose a general class of test statistics based on the difference in weighted sample means without imposing any distributional or model assumption. An optimal weight is derived for this class of tests. Simulation studies show that our proposed test with the optimal weight performs well and outperforms existing methods in practical situations. Two cancer biomarker studies are provided for illustration.

Low-energy nuclear recoils (NRs) are hard to measure because they produce few e$^{-}$/h$^+$ pairs in solids -- i.e. they have low "ionization yield". A silicon detector was exposed to thermal neutrons over 2.5\,live-days, probing NRs down to 450\,eV. The observation of a neutron capture-induced component of NRs at low energies is supported by the much-improved fit upon inclusion of a capture NR model. Abstract

BACKGROUND: In order to quantify fluid administration and evaluate the clinical consequences of conservative fluid management without hemodynamic monitoring in undifferentiated shock, we analyzed previously collected data from a study of carotid Doppler monitoring as a predictor of fluid responsiveness (FR). METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of data collected from a single tertiary academic center from a previous study. Seventy-four patients were included for post-hoc analysis, and 52 of them were identified as fluid responsive (cardiac output increase > 10% with passive leg raise) according to NICOMTM bioreactance monitoring (Cheetah Medical, Newton Center, MA, USA). Treating teams provided standard of care conservative fluid resuscitation but were blinded to independently performed FR testing results. Outcomes were compared between fluid responsive and fluid non-responsive patients. Primary outcome measures were volume fluids administered and net fluid balance 24- and 72-hour post-FR assessment. Secondary outcome measures included change in vasopressor requirements, mean peak lactate levels, length of hospital/intensive care unit stay, acute respiratory failure, hemodialysis requirement, and durations of vasopressors and mechanical ventilation. RESULTS: Mean fluids administered within 72 hours were similar between fluid non-responsive and fluid responsive patients (139 mL/kg [95% confidence interval [CI]: 102.00-175.00] vs. 136 mL/kg [95% CI: 113.00-158.00], p = 0.92, respectively). We observed an insignificant trend toward higher 28-day mortality among fluid non-responsive patients (36% vs. 19%, p = 0.14). Volume of fluids administered significantly correlated with adverse outcomes such as increased hemodialysis requirements (32 patients, 43%), (odds ratio [OR] = 1.7200, p = 0.0018). Subgroup analysis suggested administering ≥ 30 mL/kg fluids to fluid responsive patients had a trend toward increased mortality (25% vs. 0%, p = 0.09) and a significant increase in hemodialysis (55% vs. 17%, p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: Without formal FR assessment, similar amounts of total fluids were administered in both fluid responsive and non-responsive patients. As greater volumes of intravenous fluids administered were associated with adverse outcomes, we suggest that dedicated FR assessment may be a beneficial utility in early shock resuscitation.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved efficient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to Lightly Ionizing Particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits calculated using the optimum interval method on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically-produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than $e/(3\times10^5$), as well as the strongest limits for charge $\leq e/160$, with a minimum vertical intensity of $1.36\times10^{-7}$\,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$sr$^{-1}$ at charge $e/160$. These results apply over a wide range of LIP masses (5\,MeV/$c^2$ to 100\,TeV/$c^2$) and cover a wide range of $\beta\gamma$ values (0.1 -- $10^6$), thus excluding non-relativistic LIPs with $\beta\gamma$ as small as 0.1 for the first time.

Abstract

We present limits on spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions using a $10.6$ $\mathrm{g}$ Si athermal phonon detector with a baseline energy resolution of $\sigma_E=3.86 \pm 0.04$ $(\mathrm{stat.})^{+0.19}_{-0.00}$ $(\mathrm{syst.})$ $\mathrm{eV}$. This exclusion analysis sets the most stringent dark matter-nucleon scattering cross-section limits achieved by a cryogenic detector for dark matter particle masses from $93$ to $140$ $\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$, with a raw exposure of $9.9$ $\mathrm{g}\cdot\mathrm{d}$ acquired at an above-ground facility. Abstract

This article presents an analysis and the resulting limits on light dark matter inelastically scattering off of electrons, and on dark photon and axion-like particle absorption, using a second-generation SuperCDMS high-voltage eV-resolution detector. The 0.93 gram Si detector achieved a 3 eV phonon energy resolution; for a detector bias of 100 V, this corresponds to a charge resolution of 3% of a single electron-hole pair. The energy spectrum is reported from a blind analysis with 1.2 gram-days of exposure acquired in an above-ground laboratory. With charge carrier trapping and impact ionization effects incorporated into the dark matter signal models, the dark matter-electron cross section $\bar{\sigma}_{e}$ is constrained for dark matter masses from 0.5--$10^{4} $MeV$/c^{2}$; in the mass range from 1.2--50 eV$/c^{2}$ the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter $\varepsilon$ and the axioelectric coupling constant $g_{ae}$ are constrained. The minimum 90% confidence-level upper limits within the above mentioned mass ranges are $\bar{\sigma}_{e}\,=\,8.7\times10^{-34}$ cm$^{2}$, $\varepsilon\,=\,3.3\times10^{-14}$, and $g_{ae}\,=\,1.0\times10^{-9}$., Comment: 5 pages + title and references, 3 figures and 1 table

Abstract

We present an analysis of electron recoils in cryogenic germanium detectors operated during the SuperCDMS Soudan experiment. The data are used to set new constraints on the axioelectric coupling of axion-like particles and the kinetic mixing parameter of dark photons, assuming the respective species constitutes all of the galactic dark matter. This study covers the mass range from 40 eV/$c^2$ to 500 eV/$c^2$ for both candidates, excluding previously untested parameter space for masses below ~1 keV/$c^2$. For the kinetic mixing of dark photons, values below $10^{-15}$ are reached for particle masses around 100 eV/$c^2$; for the axioelectric coupling of axion-like particles, values below $10^{-12}$ are reached for particles with masses in the range of a few-hundred eV/$c^2$., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 1 page correction included with 3 figures

The experiment has achieved a low energy threshold with improved sensitivity to low-mass (<10 GeV/c$^2$) dark matter particles. We present an analysis of the final CDMSlite data set, taken with a different detector than was used for the two previous CDMSlite data sets. This analysis includes a data "salting" method to protect against bias, improved noise discrimination, background modeling, and the use of profile likelihood methods to search for a dark matter signal in the presence of backgrounds. We achieve an energy threshold of 70 eV and significantly improve the sensitivity for dark matter particles with masses between 2.5 and 10 GeV/c$^2$ compared to previous analyses. We set an upper limit on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section in germanium of 5.4$\times$10$^{-42}$ cm$^2$ at 5 GeV/c$^2$, a factor of $\sim$2.5 improvement over the previous CDMSlite result.

Abstract

Future direct searches for low-mass dark matter particles with germanium detectors, such as SuperCDMS SNOLAB, are expected to be limited by backgrounds from radioactive isotopes activated by cosmogenic radiation inside the germanium. There are limited experimental data available to constrain production rates and a large spread of theoretical predictions. We examine the calculation of expected production rates, and analyze data from the second run of the CDMS low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) to estimate the rates for several isotopes. We model the measured CDMSlite spectrum and fit for contributions from tritium and other isotopes. Using the knowledge of the detector history, these results are converted to cosmogenic production rates at sea level. The production rates in atoms/(kg$\cdot$day) are 74$\pm$9 for $^3$H, 1.5$\pm$0.7 for $^{55}$Fe, 17$\pm$5 for $^{65}$Zn, and 30$\pm$18 for $^{68}$Ge., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. v5 contains the extended data release (and documentation) of the CDMSlite Run 2 data as ancillary files

Abstract

The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment (SuperCDMS) at the Soudan Underground Laboratory studied energy loss associated with Frenkel defect formation in germanium crystals at mK temperatures using in situ $^{210}$Pb sources. We examine the spectrum of $^{206}$Pb nuclear recoils near its expected 103 keV endpoint energy and determine an energy loss of $\left(6.08\pm0.18\right)$ %, which we attribute to defect formation. From this result and using TRIM simulations, we extract the first experimentally determined average displacement threshold energy of $\left(19.7^{+0.6}_{-0.5}\right)$ eV for germanium. Abstract

We present the first limits on inelastic electron-scattering dark matter and dark photon absorption using a prototype SuperCDMS detector having a charge resolution of 0.1 electron-hole pairs (CDMS HVeV, a 0.93 gram CDMS HV device). These electron-recoil limits significantly improve experimental constraints on dark matter particles with masses as low as 1 MeV/$\mathrm{c^2}$. We demonstrate a sensitivity to dark photons competitive with other leading approaches but using substantially less exposure (0.49 gram days). Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment aims to detect dark matter particles that elastically scatter from nuclei in semiconductor detectors. The resulting nuclear-recoil energy depositions are detected by ionization and phonon sensors. Neutrons produce a similar spectrum of low-energy nuclear recoils in such detectors, while most other backgrounds produce electron recoils. The absolute energy scale for nuclear recoils is necessary to interpret results correctly. The energy scale can be determined in CDMS II silicon detectors using neutrons incident from a broad-spectrum $^{252}$Cf source, taking advantage of a prominent resonance in the neutron elastic scattering cross section of silicon at a recoil (neutron) energy near 20 (182) keV. Results indicate that the phonon collection efficiency for nuclear recoils is $4.8^{+0.7}_{-0.9}$% lower than for electron recoils of the same energy. Comparisons of the ionization signals for nuclear recoils to those measured previously by other groups at higher electric fields indicate that the ionization collection efficiency for CDMS II silicon detectors operated at $\sim$4 V/cm is consistent with 100% for nuclear recoils below 20 keV and gradually decreases for larger energies to $\sim$75% at 100 keV. Abstract

We report the result of a blinded search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using the majority of the SuperCDMS Soudan dataset. With an exposure of 1690 kg days, a single candidate event is observed, consistent with expected backgrounds. This analysis (combined with previous Ge results) sets an upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP--nucleon cross section of $1.4 \times 10^{-44}$ ($1.0 \times 10^{-44}$) cm$^2$ at 46 GeV/$c^2$. These results set the strongest limits for WIMP--germanium-nucleus interactions for masses $>$12 GeV/$c^2$.
