To evaluate the cardiorespiratory effects and postoperative analgesia of a total intravenous anesthesia protocol, twenty-four adult goats were assigned to four experimental groups: G1 and G2 underwent to laparoscopic procedure every 15 days, while G3, and G4 every 30 days. Xylazine (0.05 mg/kg IM) in all animals and butorphanol (0.5 mg/kg IM) in animals of G2 and G4 were used as premedication. Ketamine (2.0 mg/kg IV) anaesthetic induction was performed and subsequently the sheep were intubated and received oxygen (FiCO2= 1.0). Animals were positioned in a Trendelenburg position and anaesthetic plane maintained by constant infusion of 2 mL/kg/h IV of a solution composed of: 12.5 g of guaiacolate, 25 mg of xylazine and 250 mg of ketamine in 250 mL of 5% dextrose. Haemo-gasometric (pH, PO2PCO2, cHCO3) and clinical parameters (HR, RR, MAP and T), recovery time and postoperative analgesia were evaluated at different times of the anesthetic-surgical procedure. HR, RR, T, pH, PO2, PCO2and cHCO3varied through surgical time and PCO2was significantly higher in butorphanol treated animals. The studied anaesthetic protocol resulted in a prolonged recovery, clinical hypotension and respiratory acidosis; butorphanol supplementation caused an increase in PaCO2with no evident improvement of postoperative analgesia. Therefore, the practical application of this protocol indicates a special fluid, ventilation and recovery care. Further studies are needed on the analgesic effect of butorphanol in these situations to allow its indication., Para evaluar los efectos cardiorrespiratorios y la analgesia posoperatoria de un protocolo de anestesia total intravenosa fueron utilizadas 24 cabras adultas, distribuidas en cuatro grupos experimentales: G1 y G2, sometidos a laparoscopia cada 15 días, G3 y G4 cada 30 días. Como medicación preanestésica se utilizaron 0,05 mg/kg IM de xilacina en todos los animales y 0,5 mg/kg IM de butorfanol en los grupos G2 y G4. La inducción anestésica fue realizada con ketamina (2,0 mg/kg IV), se realizó la intubación traqueal y administración de oxígeno (FiO2=1,0). Los animales fueron posicionados en Trendelemburg y mantenidos en plano anestésico mediante infusión continua de 2 mL/kg/h de una solución compuesta por 12,5 g de guayacolato, 25 mg de xilacina y 250 mg de ketamina, diluidos en 250 mL de dextrosa al 5%. Parámetros hemogasométricos (pH, PaO2PaCO2cHCO3), clínicos (FC, FR, PAM y T), tiempo de recuperación y analgesia posoperatoria fueron evaluados en diferentes momentos del procedimiento anestésico-quirúrgico. La FC, FR, T, pH, PaO2, PaCO2y cHCO3variaron con relación al tiempo quirúrgico y la PaCO2fue significativamente mayor en los animales en los que fue utilizado butorfanol. Con este protocolo anestésico se observó un tiempo de recuperación prolongado, hipotensión clínica y acidosis respiratoria; la suplementación con butorfanol resultó en un aumento de la PaCO2sin mejora evidente de la analgesia posoperatoria. Así, la aplicación práctica de este protocolo indica un cuidado especial de la fluidoterapia, la ventilación y la recuperación. Estudios más profundos del efecto analgésico del butorfanol en estas situaciones se hacen necesarios para permitir indicar su utilización.

This paper presents an evolutionary topology optimization method for applications in design of completely submerged buoyant devices with design-dependent fluid pressure loading. This type of structures aid rig installations and pipeline transportation in all water depths in offshore structural engineering. The proposed optimization method seeks the buoy design that presents higher stiffness, less material and a prescribed buoyancy effect. A hydrostatic fluid is used to simulate the underwater pressure and the polymer buoyancy module is considered linearly elastic. Both domains are solved with the finite element method. From the initial design domain, solid elements with low strain energy are iteratively removed until a certain prescribed volume fraction. The studied case consists in a buoy for supporting subsea oil pipelines, in which the inner diameter is constant and the outer shape and interior holes are defined by the optimization algorithm. A new buoyancy constraint is introduced in order to guarantee a satisfactory buoyancy effect.

The primary goal of this study was to employ ultrasonography to examine the ovaries of ewes undergoing superovulatory treatment for correlations between antral follicular blood flow and ovarian responses/embryo yields. Five Santa Inês ewes were subjected to a short- (Days 0?6, Group 1) and five to a long-term progesterone-based protocol (Days 0?12, Group 2) to synchronize estrus and ovulations after the superovulatory treatment. Porcine FSH (pFSH, 200 mg) was administered in 8 decreasing doses over 4 days, starting on Days 4 and 10 in Groups 1 and 2, respectively. After CIDR removal, all ewes were bred by a ram and embryos were recovered surgically 7 days later. Transrectal ovarian ultrasonography was performed the day before and on all 4 days of the superovulatory treatment. Both an arbitrary-scale [(0) non-detectable; (1) small; (2) moderate; (3) intense blood flow] and quantitative analysis of the blood flow area were used to assess the follicular blood flow in color Doppler images. There were no significant correlations between the arbitrary blood flow scores and superovulatory responses in the ewes of the present study. However, there was a positive correlation between the quantitative estimates of follicular blood flow on the final day of the superovulatory treatment, and the number (DA: r = 0.68, P < 0.05; DA/TA × 100%: r = 0.85, P < 0.05) and percentage (DA: r = 0.65, P < 0.05; DA/TA × 100%: r = 0.91, P < 0.001) of unfertilized eggs (DA: Doppler area, TA: total area of the largest ovarian cross section). This experiment presents a commercially practical tool for predicting superovulatory outcomes in ewes and evidence for the existence of follicular blood flow threshold that may impinge negatively on oocyte quality when surpassed during hormonal ovarian superstimulation.

A caracterização de alguns atributos físicos e químicos de frutos de tomate da cv. Santa Clara, um mutante de fruto amarelo, e o híbrido F1 obtido do cruzamento entre eles, foi feita com base nos teores de b-caroteno, licopeno, vitamina C, pH, matéria fresca, matéria seca, diâmetro do fruto, diâmetro do pericarpo, acidez e sólidos solúveis totais dos tecidos loculares e do pericarpo. Os frutos maduros amarelos apresentaram teores reduzidos de b-caroteno, licopeno e vitamina C, enquanto o híbrido apresentou teores semelhantes ao genótipo normal. Tanto o fruto mutante quanto o F1 apresentaram teor de pH menor que o do fruto normal. Não houve diferença significativa quanto a matéria fresca e seca totais, diâmetro do fruto e do pericarpo e acidez. Os teores de sólidos solúveis totais do pericarpo foram inferiores nos frutos do mutante amarelo e F1, em relação ao genótipo normal, enquanto os teores de sólidos solúveis totais da massa locular não diferiram, estatisticamente, entre os genótipos.The determination of some physical and chemical attributes of red fruits from tomato cv. Santa Clara, a yellow mutant and the F1 hybrid, were based on b-carotene, lycopene, vitamin C, pH, fresh and dry weight matter, pericarp and fruit diameter, titrateable acidity and total soluble solids. Ripe fruits of the yellow mutant showed reduced levels of b-carotene, lycopene and vitamin C, while fruits of the F1 hybrid showed levels of carotenoid pigments and vitamin C similar to the red fruit. Both mutant and F1 ripe fruits showed lower pH levels than the red parentals. Total fresh fruit and dry weight matter, pericarp and fruit diameter, and acidity were similar in the three genotypes studied. The total soluble-solids content of the pericarp was lower in the mutant and F1 fruits, whereas their concentration in the locule tissues was similar in all genotypes.

In order to evaluate the popular knowledge on the use of medicinal plants and the contribution in the preservation of medicinal flora, the present work aims to rescue and organize such knowledge on medicinal species and its relation with therapeutic uses, in the city of Rosario de Limeira, MG. Data were collected January to March, 2007. Fifteen informants, all resident in urban and agricultural communities, were asked about their knowledge on medicinal plants. The current survey revealed the use of 66 species belonging to 33 families (Asteraceae with the major number of species, followed by Lamiaceae, Rutaceae, and Bignoniaceae) used in the treatment of various diseases. 44,3% of them grow spontaneously and 55,7% are cultivated. The main vegetal part used in the preparation of the phytotherapy was the leaf, and the most common preparation was the infusion. The most used species were: Baccharis trimera, Mentha sp., Plantago major, Chenopodium ambrosioides and Symphytum officinale. Em condições de campo, avaliaram-se produtos alternativos no manejo da requeima do tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum), causada por Phytophthora infestans, em três experimentos (E). Compararam-se, em E1, extratos de: [pimenta (Capsicum chinense) + pimenta-do-reino (Piper nigrum) + cravo (Syzygium aromaticum) + açafrão-da-índia (Curcuma longa) + alho (Allium sativum)]; (pimenta-do-reino + cravo + alho); e (cravo + açafrão-da-índia + alho); em E2, óleo de nim (Azadirachta indica) (0,5%); leite (20%); e calda bordalesa; e em E3, preparado homeopático obtido de tecido de tomateiro com requeima (dinamização C30); mistura água-etanol; e calda bordalesa. Em E1, os extratos e a testemunha não diferiram quanto à severidade na metade da epidemia (Y50), severidade final (Ymáx), área abaixo da curva de progresso (AACPD) e taxa de progresso da doença (r). Em E2, Y50 com óleo de nim (3%) e calda bordalesa (1%) não diferiram; Ymáx foi maior com óleo de nim (44%) que com calda bordalesa (14%); leite não reduziu Ymáx; r e AACPD foram menores com óleo de nim (0,161 e 533, respectivamente) que na testemunha (0,211 e 1186, respectivamente) e semelhantes àqueles com calda bordalesa (0,156 e 130, respectivamente); r e AACPD foram similares nos tratamentos leite e testemunha. Em E3, Y50, Ymáx, AACPD e r com a mistura água-etanol e preparado homeopático foram similares aos da testemunha. A calda bordalesa foi o tratamento mais eficiente no controle da requeima, e o óleo de nim foi promissor. No manejo da doença em sistemas alternativos de produção, é necessário integrar práticas, para se potencializarem os efeitos individualizados. The efficacy of alternative products to manage tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, was evaluated in three field trials (E) that compared: E1- [chili pepper (Capsicum chinense) + black pepper (Piper nigrum) + clove (Syzygium aromaticum) + turmeric (Curcuma longa) + garlic (Allium sativum) extracts]; (black pepper + clove + garlic extracts); and (clove + turmeric + garlic extracts); E2 - neem (Azadirachta indica) oil (0.5%), crude cow milk diluted in water (20% v/v), and Bordeaux mixture; E3 - homeopathic preparation (from tomato tissue infected with P. infestans - C30), the water-ethanol mixture, and Bordeaux mixture. All experiments had two controls: no sprays and metalaxyl. Severity at halfway through the epidemic (Y50); at the end of the epidemic (Ymax); area under disease progress curve (AUDPC); and disease progress rate (r) were estimated. None of the extracts reduced Y50, Ymax, AUDPC, or r values. Neem oil and Bordeaux mixture resulted in similar Y50 values (3% and 1%, respectively). Ymax (44%) in plots treated with neem was higher than in those treated with Bordeaux mixture (14%). Milk at 20% did not reduce Ymax. Values of r (0.161) and AUDPC (533) were lower with neem oil than in control (r = 0.211 and AUDPC = 1186) and similar to the Bordeaux mixture plots (r = 0.156 and AUDPC = 130). Values of r and AUDPC on plots treated with milk were similar to those in the control plots. There was no significant reduction of Y50, Ymax, AUDPC, or r values when plants were treated with homeopathic product. Bordeaux mixture was the most efficient treatment in controlling late blight. Neem oil is potentially useful. Integrated management must be implemented to keep late blight at acceptable levels on alternative tomato production systems.

A ultra-sonografia, em tempo real, em modoB foi utilizada para monitorar a gestação de vacas nelore, inseminadas com sêmen de touros das raças Nelore (G1), Canchim (G2), Angus (G3) e Simental (G4). Os exames ultra-sonográficos foram feitos para monitorar o crescimento fetal. A ultra-sonografia permitiu o estudo da gestação das vacas Nelore até 122 dias da gestação. O comprimento, o diâmetro e a circunferência da cabeça fetal não diferiram entre os grupos genéticos até os 122 dias, embora representassem parâmetros confiáveis para a predição da idade gestacional. Computer simulation was used to compare breeding progress under self fertilization with pedigree or mass selection, single seed descent (SSD) and combinations of early generation pedigree or mass selection with SSD. Pedigree selection was the most effective selection method at high (75%) and moderate (50%) heritabilities. At low (25%) and very low (10%) heritabilities, mass selection and SSD respectively yielded the best single F6 line. Early generation pedigree selection to F4 followed by SSD was not significantly different from pedigree selection alone at all heritabilities simulated. SSD offers greatest benefits in situations where simultaneous selection is required for several characteristics under different heritabilities. SSD alone or in combination with mass selection retained greater genetic variability for line selection in F6. Pedigree or mass selection for highly heritable characters in early generations (F2 and F3) followed by SSD and F6 selection on the basis of line performance for characters of low heritability would appear to maximize progress for most breeding situations.

Estimation of breeding progress in 9 tomato populations subject to 4 generations of pedigree selection revealed significant generation differences for 5 of 12 variables measured. Cross effects were of greater magnitude than generation effects with response to pedigree selection measurable only for highly heritable characters. Mean value of lines derived from 2 or 3 generations of pedigree selection followed by single seed descent (SSD) to F6 or F7 were similar to their corresponding pedigree lines and approximately 50% of SSD lines derived following selection to F4 surpassed pedigree lines in weighted value. Early generation pedigree selection to F4 followed by selection among F6 SSD derived lines appears to be the most rapid and effective means of sampling variability in segregating populations.

The females were divided into two groups: reproduced during the dry season and lambing in the rainy season (Group A, n = 38), and the opposite with the other group (Group B, n = 55). There was no difference (P > 0.05) for expression of estrus (86.8 and 98.3%), pregnancy rate (86.8 and 90.9%), lambing (76.3 and 83.6%), abortion (9 and 7.4%), fecundity (86.8 and 96.3%), birth (103.4 and 110.8%) and prolificacy (113.7 and 115.2%) observed in groups A and B, respectively. However, there was a difference (P < 0.05) in lamb mortality (26.6% for group A and 49% for group B). Ewes from group A presented a higher average live weight at the end of the reproductive season and during the final third of pregnancy (P < 0.05). Wilting is one of the major problems of parsley leaves in Brazilian retail stores. This study was conducted to determine the effect of postharvest replacement of water by submerging the parsley leaf bunches in water for 3, 6 or 9 hours at three stages: when total weight loss reached 5 and 10% and immediately after two hours of storage. Leaves were stored at 5 or 25ºC until visible wilting or yellowing was detected. Results demonstrated that water replacement resulted in gains in fresh mass, resulting in longer shelf life for leaves stored at 5 and 25ºC. In general, longer recharging resulted in greater water uptake by the leaves, but at a lower rate. By recharging the leaves with water, lower rates of mass loss were observed compared to untreated leaf bunches. Regardless the storage temperature, the relative water content of leaves decreased during shelf life, which in general was less accentuated for leaves submerged in water for 6 and 9 hours. Postharvest water replacement should be considered as an option to extend the shelf life of horticultural products that are susceptible to intense moisture loss.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico A planta medicinal Tanacetum parthenium (L.) Schultz-Bip tem ganhado grande importância nos últimos anos devido as suas propriedades profiláticas no tratamento da enxaqueca. O presente trabalho teve por finalidade caracterizar o crescimento, anatomia foliar, teor de partenolídeo, o princípio ativo mais característico das plantas de T. parthenium, e determinar os níveis mais adequados de umidade no substrato dos vasos, de irradiância e os efeitos da homeopatia nessas plantas durante seu crescimento. Dentre as condições hídricas estudadas, o nível de menor disponibilidade hídrica no substrato, 50% da capacidade de campo, causou aumento de mais de 100% no teor de prolina, redução na altura, no número de folhas, na área foliar, na massa fresca e seca e no teor de partenolídeo. Crescimento máximo foi obtido pelas plantas crescidas a 70 e 90% da capacidade de campo e teor máximo de partenolídeo ocorreu nas plantas crescidas na capacidade de campo. A redução no nível de irradiância luminosa (30 e 50% de sombreamento) das plantas causou aumento no crescimento em altura e na área foliar total. A produção de folhas, no entanto, não foi alterada. O sombreamento causou ainda atraso no florescimento e redução no acúmulo de açúcares solúveis e de amido nas folhas expandidas do terço superior das plantas. A condição de luminosidade que propiciou maior crescimento das plantas e maior teor de partenolíd eo foi a de pleno sol, sendo que nessas plantas houve maior redução no teor de partenolídeo com o tempo em dias após início do experimento. A aplicação da homeopatia Arnica montana, preparada em escala decimal, independente da presença de adubação orgânica por cobertura, não alterou o número de folhas produzidas, teve pouco efeito no crescimento em altura, mas causou aumento no acúmulo de massa fresca e seca e redução no teor de partenolídeo, exceto na potência D3 que não diferiu do controle, e acelerou o forescimento. As l plantas tratadas com Arnica D5 destacaram-se devido a maior altura e maior número de inflorescências. Ao contrário da Arnica montana, escala decimal, os efeitos da aplicação da Arnica montana, escala centesimal, diferiram em função da presença de adubação orgânica em cobertura. As plantas adubadas e tratadas com Arnica C1 obtiveram maior número de folhas e de inflorescências. O teor de partenolídeo foi menor nas plantas tratadas com Arnica centesimal, particularmente com C3 e C5. A aplicação da homeopatia em plantas condicionadas previamente, por um mês, a deficiência hídrica, não causou alteração significativa no crescimento das plantas. No entanto a aplicação tanto de Natrum muriaticum, quanto do nosódio, causou aumento no teor de clorofila e de prolina nas plantas sadias e redução nas plantas doentes. O efeito da homeopatia Natrum muriaticum foi mais lento e prolongado do que o efeito do nosódio. Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L. Schultz-Bip.) has a long history of use as a herbal treatment for ailments. Currently, the most extensive use of the plant is for migraine prophylaxis. The objective of this study was to characterize the growth, the leaf anatomy, the parthenolide content, the most active principle of T. parthenium, and to determine the best moisture availability levels in the soil, light regimes and the effects of the homeopathy in those plants during their growth. Among the studied water conditions, the level of smaller amount of water in the soil, 50% of the field capacity, it caused increase of more than 100% in the proline content, reduction in the height, in the number of leaves, in the leaf area, in the fresh and dry weight and in the parthenolide content. Maximum growth was obtained by the plants grown at 70 and 90% of the field capacity and maximum content of parthenolide happened in the plants grown in the field capacity. The reduction in the photon irradiance level ( hadow of 30 s and 50%) it caused increase in the height and in the leaf area. The number of leaves, however, there was not change by the shadow. The shadow still caused delay in the flowering and reduction in the soluble sugars and starch content of the expanded leaves of the superior third of the plants. The condition of brightness that propitiated larger growth to the plants and parthenolide content went to of full sun, and in those plants there was larger reduction in the parthenolide content with the time in days after beginning of the experiment. The application of the homeopathy Arnica montana, prepared in decimal scale, independent of the presence of organic manure for covering, it didn't change the number of leaves, There was a little effect in the growth in height, but it caused increase in the accumulation of fresh mass and it evaporates, except in the potency D3, and it accelerated the flowering. The plants with Arnica D5 stood out due to larger height and larger inflorescence number. The parthenolide content decreased with the application of Arnica montana, it climbs decimal, except in the potency D3, that didn't differ of the control. Unlike the Arnica montana, it climbs decimal, the effects of the application of the Arnica montana, it climbs centesimal, they differed in function of the presence of organic manure in covering. The fertilized plants with Arnica C1 they obtained larger number of leaves and of inflorescence. The parthenolide content was smaller in the plants with centesimal Arnica, particularly with C3 and C5. The application of the homeopathy in plants conditioned previously, for one month, to the deficiency hídrica, didn't cause significant alteration in the growth of the plants. However the so much of Natrum muriaticum application as of the isopathy it caused increase in the chlorophyll content and of prolina in the healthy plants and reduction in the sick plants. The effect of the homeopathy Natrum muriaticum was slower and lingering than the effect of the isopathy.
