Abstract

A considerable amount of the world's population lives in houses built with raw earth, using different techniques such as adobe, mud, bahareque, cob, etc. This research studies buildings built with adobe located in the city of Cuenca-Ecuador, which since 1999 is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The buildings studied have different geometric and material configurations, but all have adobe-bearing walls. This article performs an analysis of the seismic vulnerability of the adobe facade walls. The study considers 45 buildings with one and several floors, studying the behavior before outof- plane loads and for five different failure mechanisms for different seismic intensities. The behavior of the facade walls is analyzed under the capacity-demand methodology, in which an analysis of the main factors that determine the operation in the event of an earthquake of a certain magnitude is established. As a main result, this procedure has made it possible to establish a classification of buildings according to the degree of seismic vulnerability, in addition to establishing the influence of certain parameters on the variability of seismic vulnerability

Abstract

This paper explores the feasibility of using the unsteady forces generated by the Karman street around a microprism in the laminar flow regime as a means to generate mechanical work. In particular, the study has the objective of assessing whether this physical effect could be used for practical energy-harvesting purposes. The confined flow, either of a liquid or a gas, around a rectangular microprism, of which different aspect ratios have been studied, is considered at Reynolds 200 so as to make sure that the Karman street is developed and that the flow remains 2-D. The microprism is allowed to move freely in the direction perpendicular to the flow. The equation of motion of the prism includes a term that simulates its coupling with a vibration-driven micropower generator. Two different couplings have been considered: a velocity-damped resonant generator and a Coulomb-damped resonant generator. Different configurations have been studied, and comparisons have been carried out between them so as to draw a first set of design guidelines. Finally, it is shown that this type of energy-harvesting microdevice, which is basically 2-D, would yield a reasonable compromise between power output, manufacturing simplicity, and cost. 14. Visualization of water droplet deformation and breakup in a continuously accelerating flow field

Abstract

[EN] A new specific direct illumination technique is proposed for studying the deformation and breakup process of droplets that are exposed to a continuously increasing flow field. This type of flow field is in contrast to the traditional shock-tube experiments where droplets are suddenly exposed to a constant high airstream. In order to generate a continuously accelerated flow field the rotating arm facility at INTA is used. Droplets are allowed to fall in the path of an incoming airfoil mounted at the end of a rotating arm. Under certain conditions, these droplet deform and breakup before impinging on the airfoil. The incoming airfoil is a key element in the illumination technique. Droplets of 0.8 mm of diameter immersed in the flow field generated by an airfoil model of chord 0.690m approaching at 80 m/s were chosen for this study and were found to undergo a breakup process similar to the bag and stamen breakup found in the literature. Each of the stages at this type of breakup process was investigated by means of this new direct illumination technique and a high resolution camera. These images were compared to those images obtained using shadowgraph illumination technique and a high speed camera under the same conditions. Five different stages were studied and characterized. The final objective in this study was to visualize and identify fluid structures that occur during the deformation and breakup process in a continuously accelerated flow field in order to develop and fine tune physical-mathematical models.

15. Periareolar Approach for Thoracoscopic Lobectomy.

Abstract

In recent years advances in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery have been aimed at reducing the number of video surgery ports, and especially major lung resections pose the greatest challenge. We describe a new minimally invasive as well as aesthetic approach for thoracoscopic lobectomy. The technique poses no difficulty for the surgeon and has certain advantages over other videothoracoscopic approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology groups of the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) have backed the publication of a handbook on recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Due to the high incidence and mortality of this disease, the best scientific evidence must be constantly updated and made available for consultation by healthcare professionals.To draw up these recommendations, we called on a wide-ranging group of experts from the different specialties, who have prepared a comprehensive review, divided into 4 main sections. The first addresses disease prevention and screening, including risk factors, the role of smoking cessation, and screening programs for early diagnosis. The second section analyzes clinical presentation, imaging studies, and surgical risk, including cardiological risk and the evaluation of respiratory function. The third section addresses cytohistological confirmation and staging studies, and scrutinizes the TNM and histological classifications, non-invasive and minimally invasive sampling methods, and surgical techniques for diagnosis and staging. The fourth and final section looks at different therapeutic aspects, such as the role of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, a multidisciplinary approach according to disease stage, and other specifically targeted treatments, concluding with recommendations on the follow-up of lung cancer patients and surgical and endoscopic palliative interventions in advanced stages.
