The study of survival data often requires taking proper care of the censoring mechanism that prohibits complete observation of the data. Under right censoring, only the first occurring event is observed: either the event of interest, or a competing event like withdrawal of a subject from the study. The corresponding identifiability difficulties led many authors to imposing (conditional) independence or a fully known dependence between survival and censoring times, both of which are not always realistic. However, recent results in survival literature showed that parametric copula models allow identification of all model parameters, including the association parameter, under appropriately chosen marginal distributions. The present paper is the first one to apply such models in a quantile regression context, hence benefiting from its well-known advantages in terms of e.g. robustness and richer inference results. The parametric copula is supplemented with a likewise parametric, yet flexible, enriched asymmetric Laplace distribution for the survival times conditional on the covariates. Its asymmetric Laplace basis provides its close connection to quantiles, while the extension with Laguerre orthogonal polynomials ensures sufficient flexibility for increasing polynomial degrees. The distributional flavour of the quantile regression presented, comes with advantages of both theoretical and computational nature. All model parameters are proven to be identifiable, consistent, and asymptotically normal. In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the causal effect of an endogenous variable $Z$ on a survival time $T$ that can be subject to different types of dependent censoring. Firstly, we extend the current literature by simultaneously allowing for both independent ($A$) and dependent ($C$) censoring. Moreover, we have different parametric transformations for $T$ and $C$ that result in a more additive structure with approximately normal and homoscedastic error terms. The model is shown to be identified and a two-step estimation method is specified. It is shown that this estimator results in consistent and asymptotically normal estimates. Secondly, a goodness-of-fit test is developed to check the model's validity. To estimate the distribution of the statistic, a parametric bootstrap approach is used. Lastly, we show how the model naturally extends to a competing risks setting. Simulations are used to evaluate the finite-sample performance of the proposed methods and approaches. Moreover, we investigate two data applications regarding the effect of job training programs on unemployment duration and the effect of periodic screenings on breast cancer mortality rates.

In this paper we consider a time-to-event variable $T$ that is subject to random right censoring, and we assume that the censoring time $C$ is stochastically dependent on $T$ and that there is a positive probability of not observing the event. There are various situations in practice where this happens, and appropriate models and methods need to be considered to avoid biased estimators of the survival function or incorrect conclusions in clinical trials. We consider a fully parametric model for the bivariate distribution of $(T,C)$, that takes these features into account. The model depends on a parametric copula (with unknown association parameter) and on parametric marginal distributions for $T$ and $C$. Sufficient conditions are developed under which the model is identified, and an estimation procedure is proposed. In particular, our model allows to identify and estimate the association between $T$ and $C$, even though only the smallest of these variables is observable. A completely nonparametric method for the estimation of mixture cure models is proposed. A nonparametric estimator of the incidence is extensively studied and a nonparametric estimator of the latency is presented. These estimators, which are based on the Beran estimator of the conditional survival function, are proved to be the local maximum likelihood estimators. An i.i.d. representation is obtained for the nonparametric incidence estimator. As a consequence, an asymptotically optimal bandwidth is found. Moreover, a bootstrap bandwidth selection method for the nonparametric incidence estimator is proposed. The introduced nonparametric estimators are compared with existing semiparametric approaches in a simulation study, in which the performance of the bootstrap bandwidth selector is also assessed. In lifetime data, like cancer studies, theremay be long term survivors, which lead to heavy censoring at the end of the follow-up period. Since a standard survival model is not appropriate to handle these data, a cure model is needed. In the literature, covariate hypothesis tests for cure models are limited to parametric and semiparametric methods.We fill this important gap by proposing a nonparametric covariate hypothesis test for the probability of cure in mixture cure models. A bootstrap method is proposed to approximate the null distribution of the test statistic. The procedure can be applied to any type of covariate, and could be extended to the multivariate setting. We consider instrumental variable estimation of the proportional hazards model of Cox (1972). The instrument and the endogenous variable are discrete but there can be (possibly continuous) exogenous covariables. By making a rank invariance assumption, we can reformulate the proportional hazards model into a semiparametric version of the instrumental variable quantile regression model of Chernozhukov and Hansen (2005). A na\"ive estimation approach based on conditional moment conditions generated by the model would lead to a highly nonconvex and nonsmooth objective function. To overcome this problem, we propose a new presmoothing methodology. First, we estimate the model nonparametrically - and show that this nonparametric estimator has a closed-form solution in the leading case of interest of randomized experiments with one-sided noncompliance. Second, we use the nonparametric estimator to generate ``proxy'' observations for which exogeneity holds. Third, we apply the usual partial likelihood estimator to the ``proxy'' data. While the paper focuses on the proportional hazards model, our presmoothing approach could be applied to estimate other semiparametric formulations of the instrumental variable quantile regression model. Our estimation procedure allows for random right-censoring. We show asymptotic normality of the resulting estimator. In survival analysis, it often happens that some individuals, referred to as cured individuals, never experience the event of interest. When analyzing time-to-event data with a cure fraction, it is crucial to check the assumption of `sufficient follow-up', which means that the right extreme of the censoring time distribution is larger than that of the survival time distribution for the non-cured individuals. However, the available methods to test this assumption are limited in the literature. In this article, we study the problem of testing whether follow-up is sufficient for light-tailed distributions and develop a simple novel test. The proposed test statistic compares an estimator of the non-cure proportion under sufficient follow-up to one without the assumption of sufficient follow-up. A bootstrap procedure is employed to approximate the critical values of the test. We also carry out extensive simulations to evaluate the finite sample performance of the test and illustrate the practical use with applications to leukemia and breast cancer datasets., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures and 4 tables are added

This paper proposes a new test for the comparison of conditional quantile curves when the outcome of interest, typically a duration, is subject to right censoring. The test can be applied both in the case of two independent samples and for paired data, and can be used for the comparison of quantiles at a fixed quantile level, a finite set of levels or a range of quantile levels. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed test statistics is obtained both under the null hypothesis and under local alternatives. We describe a bootstrap procedure in order to approximate the critical values, and present the results of a simulation study, in which the performance of the tests for small and moderate sample sizes is studied and compared with the behavior of alternative tests. Finally, we apply the proposed tests on a data set concerning diabetic retinopathy.

This paper studies density estimation and regression analysis with contaminated data observed on the unit hypersphere S^d. Our methodology and theory are based on harmonic analysis on general S^d. We establish novel nonparametric density and regression estimators, and study their asymptotic properties including the rates of convergence and asymptotic distributions. We also provide asymptotic confidence intervals based on the asymptotic distributions of the estimators and on the empirical likelihood technique. We present practical details on implementation as well as the results of numerical studies.

This paper studies a semiparametric quantile regression model with endogenous variables and random right censoring. The endogeneity issue is solved using instrumental variables. It is assumed that the structural quantile of the logarithm of the outcome variable is linear in the covariates and censoring is independent. The regressors and instruments can be either continuous or discrete. The specification generates a continuum of equations of which the quantile regression coefficients are a solution. Identification is obtained when this system of equations has a unique solution. Our estimation procedure solves an empirical analogue of the system of equations. We derive conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically normal and prove the validity of a bootstrap procedure for inference. The finite sample performance of the approach is evaluated through numerical simulations. An application to the national Job Training Partnership Act study illustrates the method.

The hypothesis of homogeneous treatment effects is central to the instrumental variables literature. This assumption signifies that treatment effects are constant across all subjects. It allows to interpret instrumental variable estimates as average treatment effects over the whole population of the study. When this assumption does not hold, the bias of instrumental variable estimators can be larger than that of naive estimators ignoring endogeneity. This paper develops two tests for the assumption of homogeneous treatment effects when the treatment is endogenous and an instrumental variable is available. The tests leverage a covariable that is (jointly with the error terms) independent of a coordinate of the instrument. This covariate does not need to be exogenous. The first test assumes that the potential outcomes are linear in the regressors and is computationally simple. The second test is nonparametric and relies on Tikhonov regularization. The treatment can be either discrete or continuous. We show that the tests have asymptotically correct level and asymptotic power equal to one against a range of alternatives. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed tests attain excellent finite sample performances. The methodology is also applied to the evaluation of returns to schooling and the effect of price on demand in a fish market.

This paper considers the problem of inferring the causal effect of a variable $Z$ on a dependently censored survival time $T$. We allow for unobserved confounding variables, such that the error term of the regression model for $T$ is correlated with the confounded variable $Z$. Moreover, $T$ is subject to dependent censoring. This means that $T$ is right censored by a censoring time $C$, which is dependent on $T$ (even after conditioning out the effects of the measured covariates). A control function approach, relying on an instrumental variable, is leveraged to tackle the confounding issue. Further, it is assumed that $T$ and $C$ follow a joint regression model with bivariate Gaussian error terms and an unspecified covariance matrix such that the dependent censoring can be handled in a flexible manner. Conditions under which the model is identifiable are given, a two-step estimation procedure is proposed, and it is shown that the resulting estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Simulations are used to confirm the validity and finite-sample performance of the estimation procedure. Finally, the proposed method is used to estimate the causal effect of job training programs on unemployment duration.

Cure models have been developed as an alternative modelling approach to conventional survival analysis in order to account for the presence of cured subjects that will never experience the event of interest. Mixture cure models, which model separately the cure probability and the survival of uncured subjects depending on a set of covariates, are particularly useful for distinguishing curative from life-prolonging effects. In practice, it is common to assume a parametric model for the cure probability and a semiparametric model for the survival of the susceptibles. Because of the latent cure status, maximum likelihood estimation is performed by means of the iterative EM algorithm. Here, we focus on the cure probabilities and propose a two-step procedure to improve upon the performance of the maximum likelihood estimator when the sample size is not large. The new method is based on the idea of presmoothing by first constructing a nonparametric estimator and then projecting it into the desired parametric class. We investigate the theoretical properties of the resulting estimator and show through an extensive simulation study for the logistic-Cox model that it outperforms the existing method. Practical use of the method is illustrated through two melanoma datasets.

This paper considers identification and estimation of the causal effect of the time Z until a subject is treated on a survival outcome T. The treatment is not randomly assigned, T is randomly right censored by a random variable C and the time to treatment Z is right censored by min(T,C). The endogeneity issue is treated using an instrumental variable explaining Z and independent of the error term of the model. We study identification in a fully nonparametric framework. We show that our specification generates an integral equation, of which the regression function of interest is a solution. We provide identification conditions that rely on this identification equation. For estimation purposes, we assume that the regression function follows a parametric model. We propose an estimation procedure and give conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically normal. The estimators exhibit good finite sample properties in simulations. Our methodology is applied to find evidence supporting the efficacy of a therapy for burn-out.

This paper considers inference in a linear regression model with random right censoring and outliers. The number of outliers can grow with the sample size while their proportion goes to zero. The model is semiparametric and we make only very mild assumptions on the distribution of the error term, contrary to most other existing approaches in the literature. We propose to penalize the estimator proposed by Stute for censored linear regression by the l1-norm. We derive rates of convergence and establish asymptotic normality of the estimator of the regression coefficients. Our estimator has the same asymptotic variance as Stute's estimator in the censored linear model without outliers. Hence, there is no loss of efficiency as a result of robustness. Tests and confidence sets can therefore rely on the theory developed by Stute. The outlined procedure is also computationally advantageous, since it amounts to solving a convex optimization program. We also propose a second estimator which uses the proposed penalized Stute estimator as a first step to detect outliers. It has similar theoretical properties but better performance in finite samples as assessed by simulations.

This paper discusses endogenous treatment models with duration outcomes, competing risks and random right censoring. The endogeneity issue is solved using a discrete instrumental variable. We show that the competing risks model generates a non-parametric quantile instrumental regression problem. The cause-specific cumulative incidence, the cause-specific hazard and the subdistribution hazard can be recovered from the regression function. A distinguishing feature of the model is that censoring and competing risks prevent identification at some quantiles. We characterize the set of quantiles for which exact identification is possible and give partial identification results for other quantiles. We outline an estimation procedure and discuss its properties. The finite sample performance of the estimator is evaluated through simulations. We apply the proposed method to the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York experiment.

Consider a survival time T that is subject to random right censoring, and suppose that T is stochastically dependent on the censoring time C. We are interested in the marginal distribution of T. This situation is often encountered in practice. Consider for instance the case where T is the time to death of a patient suffering from a certain disease. Then, the censoring time C is for instance the time until the person leaves the study or the time until he/she dies from another disease. If the reason for leaving the study is related to the health condition of the patient or if he/she dies from a disease that has similar risk factors as the disease of interest, then T and C are likely dependent. In this paper we propose a new model that takes this dependence into account. The model is based on a parametric copula for the relationship between T and C, and on parametric marginal distributions for T and C. Unlike most other papers in the literature, we do not assume that the parameter defining the copula function is known. We give sufficient conditions on these parametric copula and marginals under which the bivariate distribution of (T;C) is identifed. These sufficient conditions are then checked for a wide range of common copulas and marginal distributions. We also study the estimation of the model, and carry out extensive simulations and the analysis of data on pancreas cancer to illustrate the proposed model and estimation procedure., Comment: 33 pages, 4 figures

The comparison of Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves is frequently used in the literature to compare the discriminatory capability of different classification procedures based on diagnostic variables. The performance of these variables can be sometimes influenced by the presence of other covariates, and thus they should be taken into account when making the comparison. A new non-parametric test is proposed here for testing the equality of two or more dependent ROC curves conditioned to the value of a multidimensional covariate. Projections are used for transforming the problem into a one-dimensional approach easier to handle. Simulations are carried out to study the practical performance of the new methodology. A real data set of patients with Pleural Effusion is analysed to illustrate this procedure.

In epidemics many interesting quantities, like the reproduction number, depend on the incubation period (time from infection to symptom onset) and/or the generation time (time until a new person is infected from another infected person). Therefore, estimation of the distribution of these two quantities is of distinct interest. However, this is a challenging problem since it is normally not possible to obtain precise observations of these two variables. Instead, in the beginning of a pandemic, it is possible to observe for infection pairs the time of symptom onset for both people as well as a window for infection of the first person (e.g. because of travel to a risk area). In this paper we suggest a simple semi-parametric sieve-estimation method based on Laguerre-Polynomials for estimation of these distributions. We provide detailed theory for consistency and illustrate the finite sample performance for small datasets via a simulation study.

This paper analyzes the effect of a discrete treatment Z on a duration T. The treatment is not randomly assigned. The confounding issue is treated using a discrete instrumental variable explaining the treatment and independent of the error term of the model. Our framework is nonparametric and allows for random right censoring. This specification generates a nonlinear inverse problem and the average treatment effect is derived from its solution. We provide local and global identification properties that rely on a nonlinear system of equations. We propose an estimation procedure to solve this system and derive rates of convergence and conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically normal. When censoring makes identification fail, we develop partial identification results. Our estimators exhibit good finite sample properties in simulations. We also apply our methodology to the Illinois Reemployment Bonus Experiment.

We consider survival data from a population with cured subjects in the presence of mismeasured covariates. We use the mixture cure model to account for the individuals that will never experience the event and at the same time distinguish between the effect of the covariates on the cure probabilities and on survival times. In particular, for practical applications, it seems of interest to assume a logistic form of the incidence and a Cox proportional hazards model for the latency. To correct the estimators for the bias introduced by the measurement error, we use the simex algorithm, which is a very general simulation based method. It essentially estimates this bias by introducing additional error to the data and then recovers bias corrected estimators through an extrapolation approach. The estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normally distributed when the true extrapolation function is known. We investigate their finite sample performance through a simulation study and apply the proposed method to analyse the effect of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) on patients with prostate cancer.

A challenge when dealing with survival analysis data is accounting for a cure fraction, meaning that some subjects will never experience the event of interest. Mixture cure models have been frequently used to estimate both the probability of being cured and the time to event for the susceptible subjects, by usually assuming a parametric (logistic) form of the incidence. We propose a new estimation procedure for a parametric cure rate that relies on a preliminary smooth estimator and is independent of the model assumed for the latency. We investigate the theoretical properties of the estimators and show through simulations that, in the logistic/Cox model, presmoothing leads to more accurate results compared to the maximum likelihood estimator. To illustrate the practical use, we apply the new estimation procedure to two studies of melanoma survival data.

When analyzing time-to-event data, it often happens that some subjects do not experience the event of interest. Survival models that take this feature into account (called `cure models') have been developed in the presence of covariates. However, the current literature on nonparametric cure models with covariates cannot be applied when the follow-up is insufficient, i.e., when the right endpoint of the support of the censoring time is strictly smaller than that of the survival time of the susceptible subjects. In this paper we attempt to fill this gap in the literature by proposing new estimators of the conditional cure rate and the conditional survival function using extrapolation techniques coming from extreme value theory. We establish the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators, and show how the estimators work for small samples by means of a simulation study. We also illustrate their practical applicability through the analysis of data on the survival of colon cancer patients.

In transformation regression models the response is transformed before fitting a regression model to covariates and transformed response. We assume such a model where the errors are independent from the covariates and the regression function is modeled nonparametrically. We suggest a test for goodness-of-fit of a parametric transformation class based on a distance between a nonparametric transformation estimator and the parametric class. We present asymptotic theory under the null hypothesis of validity of the semi-parametric model and under local alternatives. A bootstrap algorithm is suggested in order to apply the test. We consider the problem of estimating the distribution of time-to-event data that are subject to censoring and for which the event of interest might never occur, i.e., some subjects are cured. To model this kind of data in the presence of covariates, one of the leading semiparametric models is the promotion time cure model \citep{yakovlev1996}, which adapts the Cox model to the presence of cured subjects. Estimating the conditional distribution results in a complicated constrained optimization problem, and inference is difficult as no closed-formula for the variance is available. We propose a new model, inspired by the Cox model, that leads to a simple estimation procedure and that presents a closed formula for the variance. We derive some asymptotic properties of the estimators and we show the practical behaviour of our procedure by means of simulations. An important research topic in survival analysis is related to the modeling and estimation of the cure rate, i.e. the proportion of subjects that will never experience the event of interest. However, most estimation methods proposed so far in the literature do not handle the case of insufficient follow-up, that is when the right end point of the support of the censoring time is strictly less than that of the survival time of the susceptible subjects, and consequently these estimators overestimate the cure rate in that case. We fill this gap by proposing a new estimator of the cure rate that makes use of extrapolation techniques from the area of extreme value theory. We establish the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator, and show how the estimator works for small samples by means of a simulation study. We also illustrate its practical applicability through the analysis of data on the survival of breast cancer patients.

We propose completely nonparametric methodology to investigate location-scale modelling of two-component mixture cure models, where the responses of interest are only indirectly observable due to the presence of censoring and the presence of so-called long-term survivors that are always censored. We use covariate-localized nonparametric estimators, which depend on a bandwidth sequence, to propose an estimator of the error distribution function that has not been considered before in the literature. When this bandwidth belongs to a certain range of undersmoothing bandwidths, the asymptotic distribution of the proposed estimator of the error distribution function does not depend on this bandwidth, and this estimator is shown to be root-n consistent. This suggests that a computationally costly bandwidth selection procedure is unnecessary to obtain an effective estimator of the error distribution, and that a simpler rule-of-thumb approach can be used instead. A simulation study investigates the finite sample properties of our approach, and the methodology is illustrated using data obtained to study the behavior of distant metastasis in lymph-node-negative breast cancer patients., Comment: 1 figure. In this paper we consider a location model of the form $Y = m(X) + \varepsilon$, where $m(\cdot)$ is the unknown regression function, the error $\varepsilon$ is independent of the $p$-dimensional covariate $X$ and $E(\varepsilon)=0$. Given i.i.d. data $(X_1,Y_1),\ldots,(X_n,Y_n)$ and given an estimator $\hat m(\cdot)$ of the function $m(\cdot)$ (which can be parametric or nonparametric of nature), we estimate the distribution of the error term $\varepsilon$ by the empirical distribution of the residuals $Y_i-\hat m(X_i)$, $i=1,\ldots,n$. To approximate the distribution of this estimator, Koul and Lahiri (1994) and Neumeyer (2008, 2009) proposed bootstrap procedures, based on smoothing the residuals either before or after drawing bootstrap samples. So far it has been an open question whether a classical non-smooth residual bootstrap is asymptotically valid in this context. In this paper we solve this open problem, and show that the non-smooth residual bootstrap is consistent. We illustrate this theoretical result by means of simulations, that show the accuracy of this bootstrap procedure for various models, testing procedures and sample sizes.

In this paper, we study a novel approach for the estimation of quantiles when facing potential right censoring of the responses. Contrary to the existing literature on the subject, the adopted strategy of this paper is to tackle censoring at the very level of the loss function usually employed for the computation of quantiles, the so-called "check" function. For interpretation purposes, a simple comparison with the latter reveals how censoring is accounted for in the newly proposed loss function. Subsequently, when considering the inclusion of covariates for conditional quantile estimation, by defining a new general loss function, the proposed methodology opens the gate to numerous parametric, semiparametric and nonparametric modelling techniques. In order to illustrate this statement, we consider the well-studied linear regression under the usual assumption of conditional independence between the true response and the censoring variable. For practical minimization of the studied loss function, we also provide a simple algorithmic procedure shown to yield satisfactory results for the proposed estimator with respect to the existing literature in an extensive simulation study. From a more theoretical prospect, consistency of the estimator for linear regression is obtained using very recent results on non-smooth semiparametric estimation equations with an infinite-dimensional nuisance parameter, while numerical examples illustrate the adequateness of a simple bootstrap procedure for inferential purposes. Lastly, an application to a real dataset is used to further illustrate the validity and finite sample performance of the proposed estimator.

In survival analysis it often happens that some subjects under study do not experience the event of interest; they are considered to be `cured'. The population is thus a mixture of two subpopulations: the one of cured subjects, and the one of `susceptible' subjects. When covariates are present, a so-called mixture cure model can be used to model the conditional survival function of the population. It depends on two components: the probability of being cured and the conditional survival function of the susceptible subjects. In this paper we propose a novel approach to estimate a mixture cure model when the data are subject to random right censoring. We work with a parametric model for the cure proportion (like e.g. a logistic model), while the conditional survival function of the uncured subjects is unspecified. The approach is based on an inversion which allows to write the survival function as a function of the distribution of the observable random variables. This leads to a very general class of models, which allows a flexible and rich modeling of the conditional survival function. We show the identifiability of the proposed model, as well as the weak consistency and the asymptotic normality of the model parameters. We also consider in more detail the case where kernel estimators are used for the nonparametric part of the model. The new estimators are compared with the estimators from a Cox mixture cure model via finite sample simulations. Finally, we apply the new model and estimation procedure on two medical data sets.

When facing multivariate covariates, general semiparametric regression techniques come at hand to propose flexible models that are unexposed to the curse of dimensionality. In this work a semiparametric copula-based estimator for conditional quantiles is investigated for complete or right-censored data. In spirit, the methodology is extending the recent work of Noh et al. (2013) and Noh et al. (2015), as the main idea consists in appropriately defining the quantile regression in terms of a multivariate copula and marginal distributions. Prior estimation of the latter and simple plug-in lead to an easily implementable estimator expressed, for both contexts with or without censoring, as a weighted quantile of the observed response variable. In addition, and contrary to the initial suggestion in the literature, a semiparametric estimation scheme for the multivariate copula density is studied, motivated by the possible shortcomings of a purely parametric approach and driven by the regression context. The resulting quantile regression estimator has the valuable property of being automatically monotonic across quantile levels, and asymptotic normality for both complete and censored data is obtained under classical regularity conditions. Finally, numerical examples as well as a real data application are used to illustrate the validity and finite sample performance of the proposed procedure.

In this paper we consider a heteroscedastic transformation model, where the transformation belongs to a parametric family of monotone transformations, the regression and variance function are modelled nonparametrically and the error is independent of the multidimensional covariates. In this model, we first consider the estimation of the unknown components of the model, namely the transformation parameter, regression and variance function and the distribution of the error. We show the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators. Second, we propose tests for the validity of the model, and establish the limiting distribution of the test statistics under the null hypothesis. A bootstrap procedure is proposed to approximate the critical values of the tests. This paper presents a goodness-of-fit test for parametric regression models with scalar response and directional predictor, that is, a vector on a sphere of arbitrary dimension. The testing procedure is based on the weighted squared distance between a smooth and a parametric regression estimator, where the smooth regression estimator is obtained by a projected local approach. Asymptotic behavior of the test statistic under the null hypothesis and local alternatives is provided, jointly with a consistent bootstrap algorithm for application in practice. We discuss nonparametric tests for parametric specifications of regression quantiles. The test is based on the comparison of parametric and nonparametric fits of these quantiles. The nonparametric fit is a Nadaraya-Watson quantile smoothing estimator. An asymptotic treatment of the test statistic requires the development of new mathematical arguments. An approach that makes only use of plugging in a Bahadur expansion of the nonparametric estimator is not satisfactory. It requires too strong conditions on the dimension and the choice of the bandwidth. Our alternative mathematical approach requires the calculation of moments of Nadaraya-Watson quantile regression estimators. This calculation is done by application of higher order Edgeworth expansions.

In competing risks models, the joint distribution of the event times is not identifiable even when the margins are fully known, which has been referred to as the "identifiability crisis in competing risks analysis" (Crowder, 1991). We model the dependence between the event times by an unknown copula and show that identification is actually possible within many frequently used families of copulas. Consider a random vector (X',Y)', where X is d-dimensional and Y is one-dimensional. We assume that Y is subject to random right censoring. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we propose a new estimator of the joint distribution of (X',Y)'. This estimator overcomes the common curse-of-dimensionality problem, by using a new dimension reduction technique. Second, we assume that the relation between X and Y is given by a mean regression single index model, and propose a new estimator of the parameters in this model. Consider the semiparametric transformation model $\Lambda_{\theta_o}(Y)=m(X)+\epsilon$, where $\theta_o$ is an unknown finite dimensional parameter, the functions $\Lambda_{\theta_o}$ and $m$ are smooth, $\epsilon$ is independent of $X$, and $\esp(\epsilon)=0$. We propose a kernel-type estimator of the density of the error $\epsilon$, and prove its asymptotic normality. The estimated errors, which lie at the basis of this estimator, are obtained from a profile likelihood estimator of $\theta_o$ and a nonparametric kernel estimator of $m$. The practical performance of the proposed density estimator is evaluated in a simulation study.
