Maternal malnutrition plays a crucial role in functional development, resulting in behavioral, cognitive, and metabolic abnormalities and disturbances. "Cafeteria diet" has been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and other metabolic disruptions in the mammalian lifespan. However, there are very few reports about the effect of intrauterine and early postnatal malnutrition on the circadian rhythm programming of energy metabolites. In mammals, circadian rhythm central control is fundamental for correct interaction with the environment and physiological regulation. Exposure to malnutrition during development imprints metabolic programming throughout life on the central nervous system and peripheral systems. Lifespan studies exploring the effect of high fat/low protein diet administered during critical periods of development are scarce. The present study explored the effect of intrauterine and perinatal malnutrition induced by a high fat/low protein diet (Cafeteria Diet) on circadian and peripheral oscillators controlling glucose, insulin, and triglycerides in rats at 40 and 90 days of age. We evaluated plasma glucose and triglyceride levels in 6 Zeitgeber times, in addition to an intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IpTGT) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) at two time-points over 24h. Our results show that offspring of malnourished dams fed cafeteria diet present alterations in circadian rhythmicity of glucose and triglycerides associated with a change in glucose tolerance and insulin sensibility differentially regulated at the development stage and time of day. Molting is an important process in which old and worn feathers are exchanged for new ones. Plumage color is determined by pigments such as carotenes, melanin and by the ultrastructure of the feather. The importance of plumage coloration has been widely studied in different groups of birds, generally at a particular time of the year. However, plumage coloration is not static and few studies have addressed the change in plumage color over time and its relationship to reproductive tasks. The Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata, Des Murs, 1847) has a melanistic coloration with sexual dichromatism in different body regions. The Eared Dove´s crown is the most exposed body region during the bowing display. Our objective was therefore to accurately determine the molting period of the crown feathers and study the seasonal variation in their coloration in females and males. Our findings indicate a molting period of 6 months (January to June). The new feathers are undergoing changes in their coloration from July to December. During that period we apply an avian vision model then enabled us to reveal a seasonal variation in the coloration of the crown feathers in both sexes, as given by a change in the chromatic distances. The highest values in the chromatic distances towards the reproductive period are given by a change in the UV-violet component of the spectrum, indicating changes in the microstructure of the feather. Aim: This manuscript aims to evaluate, through a scoping review, current knowledge of the biomechanical behavior, materials, preparations, and limitations of occlusal veneers., Background: Occlusal veneers are a minimally invasive alternative for the additive restoration of posterior teeth with significant loss of the occlusal structure. This type of restoration has been emerged in recent years as an alternative to invasive treatment, which in the same way seeks to restore the structure of the posterior teeth. All this is because in recent years restorative dentistry has focused a large part of its objectives on conservative therapies., Review Results: Five electronic databases-PubMed, Cochrane, LILACS, EMBASE, and Google Scholar-were searched. Title and abstracts were independently screened by three reviewers, followed by a full-text review. A total of 42 articles met our inclusion criteria; most of these studies were in vitro ( n = 35) and other studies were clinical studies ( n = 7). These in vitro studies included 21 studies that analyzed the type of preparation and 6 studies that evaluated the limitations of occlusal veneers., Conclusion: Thicknesses between 0.7 and 1.0 mm are recommended for ceramic materials; in addition, thicknesses less than 0.7 mm are recommended to use polymeric materials. The materials used for this type of restoration are plastic- and ceramic-based materials, whose load resistance values were found to exceed 2000 N in most studies. It is recommended to carry out a minimally invasive preparation or not to carry out a dental preparation, as long as there is a peripheral enamel to make an external bevel that redirects the eccentric forces to the axis of the tooth., Clinical Significance: Restorative dentistry has moved toward conservative treatments with the least amount of dental tissue being removed. Occlusal veneers appear to be a conservative option in the reconstruction of tooth tissues lost due to tooth wear and in cases where it is necessary to restore or increase the vertical dimension.

For birds, plumage color perception is critical in social interactions such as courtship, in both monochromatic and dichromatic species. In the Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata), perhaps the most abundant South American Columbiforme, the plumage of males and females looks alike and both sexes share the same melanistic coloration with gray and pink tones. The aim of this study was therefore to determine whether evident sexual dichromatism exists in the plumage of the Eared Dove using a spectrophotometry technique in the avian-visible range (300-700 nm). The results of the classic colorimetric variables analysis (hue, chroma and brightness) show that males are in general brighter and have higher UV chroma values than females. The avian visual model points to differences in achromatic and chromatic levels between males and females in body regions possibly involved in sexual selection (e.g. the crown). The model also indicates chromatic or achromatic differences in body regions not subject to sexual selection such as the black spots on the wing coverts and white tail bands, both of which may be involved in intra- or inter-gender-specific communication.

Background and Purpose: Our previous studies have shown the β2 -adrenoceptor and its endogenous ligand, adrenaline, are required for development of the asthma phenotype in murine asthma models. Chronic administration of some, but not other, β-blockers attenuated the asthma phenotype and led us to hypothesize that biased signalling was the basis of their differential effects, experimentally and clinically., Experimental Approach: We used mice with no detectable systemic adrenaline (PNMT(-/-) ) and wild-type (WT) mice to study the effects of four β-blockers, alprenolol, carvedilol, propranolol and nadolol, in an ovalbumin sensitization and challenge (Ova S/C) murine model of asthma. The parameters measured were inflammatory cell infiltration, mucous metaplasia and airway hyperresponsiveness. To interpret the pharmacological action of these ligands quantitatively, we conducted computer simulations of three-state models of receptor activation., Key Results: Ova S/C PNMT(-/-) mice do not develop an asthma phenotype. Here, we showed that administration of alprenolol, carvedilol or propranolol in the absence of interference from adrenaline using Ova S/C PNMT(-/-) mice resulted in the development of an asthma phenotype, whereas nadolol had no effect. Ova S/C WT mice did develop an asthma phenotype, and administration of alprenolol, propranolol and carvedilol had no effect on the asthma phenotype. However, nadolol prevented development of the asthma phenotype in Ova S/C WT mice. Computer simulations of these four ligands were consistent with the isolated three-state receptor model., Conclusion and Implications: β-Blockers have different effects on the murine asthma phenotype that correlate with reported differences in activation or inhibition of downstream β2 -adrenoceptor signalling pathways., (© 2015 The British Pharmacological Society.)

Purpose: The vertebrate inner retina has a subset of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that express the nonvisual photopigment melanopsin. The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells send light information from the environment to the brain to control, among other parameters, the amount of energy entering the eyes through the pupillary light reflex (PLR). A daily variation in the PLR in both mice and humans has recently been shown, indicating circadian control of this response. In a previous work involving the sensitivity spectra for the PLR, we showed that blind chickens (GUCY1*) display the highest sensitivity to light of 480 nm. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential circadian control of PLRs in blind birds under scotopic conditions., Methods: Circadian PLR was performed on GUCY1* chickens with lights of different wavelengths (white or blue light of 475 nm) under scotopic conditions., Results: We found a significant daily variation in the PLRs of chickens exposed to white or blue light of 475 nm, with increased sensitivity at circadian time 6 during the subjective day., Conclusions: Our observations clearly point to circadian control of PLRs even in blindness, strongly indicating that both the entry of light into the eyes and its quality are differentially regulated during the day in diurnal animals., (Copyright 2015 The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Inc.)

Seasonal rhythm in sex hormones has been extensively studied in birds, as well as its relationship with the type of mating system. The Greater Rhea (Rhea americana), a South American ratite species, reproduces seasonally and has a complex mating system: female-defense polygyny and sequential polyandry. The present study aimed at analyzing the endocrine basis of reproduction in this species and its relationship with its mating system. We used HPLC and electrochemiluminescence techniques to identify and measure plasma testosterone and estradiol levels. Annual oscillations in sex hormones, testosterone and estradiol, in adult males and females were observed. Lower levels of these hormones were exhibited during the non reproductive season (February to July), whereas their maximum values were reached in September for males and November-December for females. These fluctuations reflect the seasonal changes in gonadal function. By contrast, no significant sex hormones oscillations were observed in juvenile males and females (negative control of seasonal changes). Greater rheas maintain high testosterone and estradiol levels throughout the reproductive period. The high testosterone levels during incubation and chick rearing did not inhibit parental behavior in males, which appears not to conform to the "Challenge Hypothesis". In females, the high estradiol levels throughout the reproductive season would be needed to sustain their long egg-laying period.

The vertebrate retina is known to contain three classes of photoreceptor cells: cones and rods responsible for vision, and intrinsically photoresponsive retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) involved in diverse non-visual functions such as photic entrainment of daily rhythms and pupillary light responses. In this paper we investigated the potential intrinsic photoresponsiveness of the rat RGC line, RGC-5, by testing for the presence of visual and non-visual opsins and assessing expression of the immediate-early gene protein c-Fos and changes in intracellular Ca(2+) mobilization in response to brief light pulses. Cultured RGC-5 cells express a number of photopigment mRNAs such as retinal G protein coupled receptor (RGR), encephalopsin/panopsin (Opn3), neuropsin (Opn5) and cone opsin (Opn1mw) but not melanopsin (Opn4) or rhodopsin. Opn5 immunoreactivity was observed in RGC-5 cells and in the inner retina of rat, mainly localized in the ganglion cell layer (GCL). Furthermore, white light pulses of different intensities and durations elicited changes both in intracellular Ca(2+) levels and in the induction of c-Fos protein in RGC-5 cell cultures. The results demonstrate that RGC-5 cells expressing diverse putative functional photopigments display intrinsic photosensitivity which accounts for the photic induction of c-Fos protein and changes in intracellular Ca(2+) mobilization. The presence of Opn5 in the GCL of the rat retina suggests the existence of a novel type of photoreceptor cell.
