The study was conducted to determine the effect of 7-dehydrocholesterol loaded cyclodextrin (7-DHCLC) and cholesterol-loaded cyclodextrin (CLC) on changes of bull sperm motility during short term storage (+4°C). Collected ejaculates were pooled and divided into 7 groups, as following one control (C); three 7-DHCLC and the other three CLC concentrations. Diluted semen samples were transferred and stored at +4°C and sperm motility was analysed in determined intervals during three days storage period with computer aided sperm analyse (CASA) system. Motility decreased in all groups; however, 7-DHCLC and CLC groups motility decreased in the next two days gradually. But, CLC 1.5 mg/120x106 group were identified as the best groups for protecting motility in short time preservation. In conclusion, adding different rates of 7-DHCLC and CLC to semen extender preserved motility for three days in bull semen stored at +4°C.

Unlabelled: Patients with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) are affected mostly by impaired shoulder function. Scapulothoracic arthrodesis was introduced to improve shoulder function. We evaluated the outcomes of scapulothoracic arthrodesis using multifilament cables, performed on 13 patients with FSHD (18 shoulders). There were eight males and five females (mean age, 29 years; range, 20-50 years). Outcome criteria were active shoulder forward flexion and abduction, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score, respiratory function tests, and a new shoulder function score. Patients were followed for a minimum of 24 months (average, 35.5 months; range, 24-87 months). Solid fusion was obtained in all shoulders (two after revision); active abduction range increased from 47.2 degrees +/- 11.6 degrees to 102.2 degrees +/- 10.0 degrees (mean +/- standard deviation) and anterior flexion range from 55.6 degrees +/- 16.1 degrees to 126.1 degrees +/- 20.9 degrees . The DASH score decreased from 33.6 +/- 8.9 points preoperatively to 11.6 +/- 8.0 points postoperatively. Shoulder function score increased from 15.9 +/- 2.4 points to 22.2 +/- 1.3 points. Scapulothoracic arthrodesis provides satisfactory function in patients with FSHD. Our data suggest use of multifilament cables for fixation is a reasonable option with an acceptable complication rate.Level Of Evidence: Level IV, case series. PurposeTo determine macular sensitivity and fixation characteristics in patients with unilateral resolved central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) using fundus-related microperimetry.MethodsWe reviewed 15 eyes with resolved CSC and 15 normal healthy eyes that had undergone fundus-related microperimetry. The macular sensitivity was measured using the recently introduced fundus-related microperimeter, MP-1. The best-corrected visual acuity (VA) (BCVA), mean retinal sensitivity in the central 10° (central microperimetry, cMP-1) and in the paracentral 10–20° (paracentral microperimetry, pMP-1), and fixation stability and location were determined and compared with measurements in control eyes.ResultsBCVA at the time of this study was 20/20 in all the affected eyes, and fundus examination and optical coherence tomography findings revealed no serous detachment. Eyes with CSC showed statistically significantly lower cMP-1 sensitivity and lower, but not significantly, pMP-1 sensitivity than control eyes (P<0.001, P=0.11, respectively). Eyes with CSC were not significantly different from control eyes in fixation location (P=1.00) or fixation stability (P=0.91). Patients and methods: Thirty-seven patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis participated in the study. Baseline records of personal data, ulcer assessment, visual analog scale, and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 were documented. A mucoadhesive patch was applied over the ulcer. Patients were recommended more applications if pain continued. On the fifth day, a post-therapy assessment was made. Results: The mean visual analog scale scores at baseline and posttreatment were significantly different (7.3±2.11 and 4.9±2.6, respectively; P=0.001). The mean duration of pain reduced after patch application. The mean total Oral Health Impact Profile-14 scores before and after treatment showed a statistically significant difference (P=0.001). In total, 78.4% of patients reported a considerable improvement in oral functions after treatment (P=0.008). Conclusion: The mucoadhesive biopatch containing citrus essential oil resulted in satisfying pain alleviation and restoration of oral functions with a significant improvement in the oral health-related quality of life. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hypothermia (H) on skeletal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury in rats by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), nitric oxide (NO), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in muscle, and measureing immunohistochemical- inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) staining of skeletal muscle.

Abstract Background Facial prostheses are intended to provide a non-operative rehabilitation for patients with acquired facial defects. By improving aesthetics and quality of life (QOL), this treatment involves reintegration of the patient into family and social life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of QOL in adult patients with facial prostheses and to compare this perception with that of a control group. Methods The study participants consisted of 72 patients, who were divided into three equal-sized groups according to the type of prosthesis (OP- orbital prosthesis, AP- auricular prosthesis, NP - nasal prosthesis) and 24 healthy control participants without any congenital or acquired deformity of face or body. Clinical and socio-demographic data were gathered from each person’s medical chart. Participants completed the Turkish version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument, Short Form (WHOQOL-BREF). Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, Pearson's chi-square test, ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Pearson correlation were used to analyse the data. Results Compared with the control participants, patients with NP scored lower on the all domains of QOL and all three patient groups had lower scores on overall QOL and its domains of physical and environmental health. Patients with OP reported significantly lower physical health scores than those with AP, while patients with NP reported significantly lower overall QOL and psychological health scores than those with AP. Female patients had lower environmental domain scores than did male patients. The patient’s age and income correlated with social relationships QOL, while the patient’s income and the age of facial prosthesis were correlated with environmental QOL. Conclusion Patients with facial prostheses had lower scores in overall QOL, physical and environmental health domains than the control participants. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics such as age, gender, income, localization of the defect, and age of facial prosthesis were associated with patients’ QOL. These findings may provide valuable information about the specific health needs of these patients that may affect their well-being. Further studies are needed to confirm these results. Use of the WHOQOL-BREF may provide valuable information for determining patients’ needs and priorities as well as for planning and developing comprehensive prosthetic rehabilitation programs.

Abstract Background In Turkey, formal pre-primary education for children 5- 6 years old provides the ideal setting for school-based oral health promotion programs and oral health care services. To develop effective oral health promotion programs, there is a need to assess this target group's subjective oral health needs as well as clinical needs. The Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) is a well-known instrument for assessing oral health quality of life in children aged 0-5 years old and their families. This study aimed to adapt the ECOHIS for children 5-6 years old in a Turkish-speaking community and to undertake a preliminary investigation of its psychometric properties. Methods The Turkish version of the ECOHIS was obtained with forward/backward translations, expert panels and pre-testing and it was tested in a convenience sample of 121 parents of 5- 6 year-old children attending nursery classes of three public schools. Data were collected through clinical examinations and self-completed questionnaires. The main analyses were carried out on the imputed data set. The validity of content, face, construct, discriminant and convergent and as well as the reliability of internal and test-retest of the ECOHIS were evaluated. Sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the effect of the complete case analysis for managing "Don't know" responses on the validity and reliability of the ECOHIS. Results The analysis of the imputed data set showed that Cronbach's alphas for the child and family sections were 0.92 and 0.84 respectively, and for the whole scale was 0.93. The intraclass correlation coefficient for test-retest was 0.86. The scale scores on the child and parent sections indicating worse quality of life were significantly associated with poor parental ratings of their child's oral health, high caries experience, higher gingival index scores and problem-orientated dental attendance, supporting its construct, convergent and discriminant validity. Sensitivity analysis showed that the mean imputation method and the complete case analysis did not have differing effects on the validity and reliability of the ECOHIS. Conclusions This study provided preliminary evidence concerning validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the scale among 5-6-year-old children. Future studies should be conducted on the ECOHIS to evaluate fully its psychometric properties in both community- based and clinically-based studies among parents of children younger than five. This study provides initial evidence that the ECOHIS aimed at children aged 0-5 years may be a useful tool for assessing the oral health quality of life in 6 year - old preschool children.

Liver is responsible for the metabolization processes of up to 90 % of compounds and toxins in the body. Therefore liver-on-a-chip systems, as an in vitro promising cell culture platform, have great importance for fundamental science and drug development. In most of the liver-on-a-chip studies, seeding cells on both sides of a porous membrane, which represents the basement membrane, fail to resemble the native characteristics of biochemical, biophysical, and mechanical properties. In this study, polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes were coated with gelatin to address this issue by accurately mimicking the native basement membrane present in the space of Disse. Various coating methods were used, including doctor blade, gel micro-injection, electrospinning, and spin coating. Spin coating was demonstrated to be the most effective technique owing to the ability to produce thin gel thickness with desirable surface roughness for cell interactions on both sides of the membrane. HepG2 and EA.HY926 cells were seeded on the upper and bottom sides of the gelatin-coated PET membrane and cultured on-chip for 7 days. Cell viability increased from 90 % to 95 %, while apoptotic index decreased. Albumin secretion notably rose between days 1-7 and 4-7, while GST-α secretion decreased from day 1 to day 7. Although metallic implants provide most of the required properties for bone-related applications, especially orthopedic implants, insufficient osseointegration, which may lead to loosening of the implant or prolonged healing time, is still an issue to be resolved. Osseointegration can be improved via application of various surface treatments on the metal surface. The current study focuses on a novel surface microdeformation method, which enables the formation of controlled surface patterns of various parameters. With this purpose, a surface microdeformation procedure was applied on 316L stainless steel surfaces, forming four different patterns which affected various surface parameters such as roughness, surface energy, dislocation activities close to the surface, and wettability. Static immersion tests in a simulated body fluid (SBF) environment showed that modifying the surface parameters via controlled surface patterning promoted the formation of a stable oxide layer and calcium-phosphate (CaP) deposition on the metal surfaces, improving bioactivity. Moreover, the higher amount of CaP deposition and oxide layer formation on the modified surfaces led to reduced ion release, which contributed to improved corrosion resistance. Finally, the effect of the formed surface patterns on antibiofilm formation was investigated via incubation with C. albicans for 24 h, which exhibited that microdeformation patterns remarkably inhibited the biofilm formation. Throughout the experiments, certain patterns yielded outstanding results among the four patterns formed. Overall, it was concluded that forming controlled patterns on stainless steel surfaces via surface microdeformation significantly contributed to the metal's biocompatibility via improving bioactivity, corrosion resistance, and antibiofilm formation properties. Especially, the specific surface properties such as increased surface energy, high surface roughness, and dislocation density close to the metal surface as well as increased hydrophilicity obtained via forming the pattern with relatively deeper and narrowly spaced indents yielded the most promising outcomes.
