Abstract: International audience, This paper provides an overview of the AMPERE modeling comparison project with focus on the implications of near-term policies for the costs and attainability of long-term climate objectives. Nine modeling teams participated in the project to explore the consequences of global emissions following the proposed policy stringency of the national pledges from the Copenhagen Accord and Cancún Agreements to 2030. Specific features compared to earlier assessments are the explicit consideration of near-term 2030 emission targets as well as the systematic sensitivity analysis for the availability and potential of mitigation technologies. Our estimates show that a 2030 mitigation effort comparable to the pledges would result in a further "lock-in" of the energy system into fossil fuels and thus impede the required energy transformation to reach low greenhouse-gas stabilization levels (450 ppm CO2e). Major implications include significant increases in mitigation costs, increased risk that low stabilization targets become unattainable, and reduced chances of staying below the proposed temperature change target of 2 °C in case of overshoot. With respect to technologies, we find that following the pledge pathways to 2030 would narrow policy choices, and increases the risks that some currently optional technologies, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) or the large-scale deployment of bioenergy, will become "a must" by 2030.

Abstract: International audience, A construction tree is a set of shape generation processes commonly produced with CAD modelers during a design process of B-Rep objects. However, a construction tree does not bring all the desired properties in many configurations: dimension modifications, idealization processes, etc. Generating a non trivial set of generative processes, possibly forming a construction graph, can significantly improve the adequacy of some of these generative processes to meet user's application needs. This paper proposes to extract generative processes from a given B-rep shape as a high-level shape description. To evaluate the usefulness of this description, finite element analyses (FEA) and particularly idealizations are the applications selected to evaluate the adequacy of additive generative processes. Non trivial construction trees containing generic extrusion and revolution primitives behave like well established CSG trees. Advantageously, the proposed approach is primitive-based, which ensures that any generative process of the construction graph does preserve the realizability of the corresponding volume. In the context of FEA, connections between idealized primitives of a construction graph can be efficiently performed using their interfaces. Consequently, generative processes of a construction graph become a high-level object structure that can be tailored to idealizations of primitives and robust connections between them.

Abstract: International audience, Products and virtual humans are commonly described using 3D models of their components and anatomical entities, respectively. Functions stand for symbolic information bringing a high level description of product subsets and apply also to human body anatomical entities. Ontology based approaches bring new means to improve the efficiency of these digital models. Here, the purpose is to identify similarities and differences between existing ontology based descriptions of products and virtual humans. From this analysis, it is shown how compatible descriptions can be obtained and how a common framework can be derived where products and virtual humans can be both incorporated for various applications involving 3D models. The proposed framework contains an ontology based description of products and virtual humans enabling the access to 3D models while accessing high level semantic information through the use of inference mechanisms. Biomechanical simulations of virtual humans and structural behavior simulations of products is the context used to setup this common framework such that products and virtual humans can take part to these simulations where products and virtual humans are involved.

Abstract: Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) help drivers to perform complex driving tasks and to avoid or mitigate dangerous situations. The vehicle senses the external world using sensors and then builds and updates an internal model of the environment configuration. Vehicle perception consists of establishing the spatial and temporal relationships between the vehicle and the static and moving obstacles in the environment. Vehicle perception is composed of two main tasks: simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) deals with modelling static parts; and detection and tracking moving objects (DATMO) is responsible for modelling moving parts of the environment. The perception output is used to reason and decide which driving actions are the best for specific driving situations. In order to perform a good reasoning and control, the system has to correctly model the surrounding environment. The accurate detection and classification of moving objects is a critical aspect of a moving object tracking system. Therefore, many sensors are part of a common intelligent vehicle system. Multiple sensor fusion has been a topic of research since long; the reason is the need to combine information from different views of the environment to obtain a more accurate model. This is achieved by combining redundant and complementary measurements of the environment. Fusion can be performed at different levels inside the perception task. Classification of moving objects is needed to determine the possible behaviour of the objects surrounding the vehicle, and it is usually performed at tracking level. Knowledge about the class of moving objects at detection level can help to improve their tracking, reason about their behaviour, and decide what to do according to their nature. Abstract: International audience, This paper introduces a simple and very efficient strategy to extrinsically calibrate a bearing sensor (e.g. a camera) mounted on a mobile robot and simultaneously estimate the parameters describing the systematic error of the robot odometry system. The paper provides two contributions. The first one is the analytical computation to derive the part of the system which is observable when the robot accomplishes circular trejectories. This computation consists in performing a local decomposition of the system, based on the theory of distributions. In this respect, this paper represents the first application of the distribution theory in the frame-work of mobile robotics. Then, starting from this decomposition, a method to efficiently estimate the parameters describing both the extrinsic bearing sensor calibration and the odometry calibration is derived (second contribution). Simulations and experiments with the robot e-Puck equipped with encoder sensors and a camera validate the approach.

Abstract: A concern for closer interactions between the school and the community has been part of the democratisation process in British education. Different patterns have emerged, based on a humanist and reformist view of society, or on a more radical and socially-committed approach. The extended schools concept draws on this tradition but signals a change of direction at a theoretical and political level. An examination of the extended schools programme reveals large discrepancies between an “inclusive” discourse taking up the community ideal and policies aiming first and foremost at tackling social ills.

Abstract: Despite notable scientific and medical advances, broader political, socioeconomic and behavioural factors continue to undercut the response to the COVID-19 pandemic . Here we convened, as part of this Delphi study, a diverse, multidisciplinary panel of 386 academic, health, non-governmental organization, government and other experts in COVID-19 response from 112 countries and territories to recommend specific actions to end this persistent global threat to public health. The panel developed a set of 41 consensus statements and 57 recommendations to governments, health systems, industry and other key stakeholders across six domains: communication; health systems; vaccination; prevention; treatment and care; and inequities. In the wake of nearly three years of fragmented global and national responses, it is instructive to note that three of the highest-ranked recommendations call for the adoption of whole-of-society and whole-of-government approaches , while maintaining proven prevention measures using a vaccines-plus approach that employs a range of public health and financial support measures to complement vaccination. Other recommendations with at least 99% combined agreement advise governments and other stakeholders to improve communication, rebuild public trust and engage communities in the management of pandemic responses. The findings of the study, which have been further endorsed by 184 organizations globally, include points of unanimous agreement, as well as six recommendations with >5% disagreement, that provide health and social policy actions to address inadequacies in the pandemic response and help to bring this public health threat to an end.

Abstract: Si la formule d'Yves Lacoste ("La géographie, ça sert, d'abord à faire la guerre") a fait date et a déjà connu de multiples usages et détournements, la retourner dans le cadre des études napoléoniennes dépasse de loin l'exercice du clin d'oeil en ce qu'elle ouvre des perspectives neuves et essentielles sur le rapport des Français à l'Empire. L'ambition du présent article est en effet d'appréhender la façon dont les contemporains de Napoléon ont dû s'adapter aux opérations militaires et aux transformations géopolitiques en cours dans l'espace français et européen. Les redécoupages à l'oeuvre n'ont-ils pas des répercussions très concrètes sur l'horizon des carrières ou sur les circuits économiques ? Le fait est que le départ sur les routes de l'Europe de dizaines d'hommes a entraîné une demande sociale d'informations géographiques à laquelle répondent partiellement la correspondance des soldats ou la publication d'atlas mis à jour, et que le pouvoir napoléonien tente d'orienter à des fins de propagande. A questions nouvelles, sources renouvelées : cet article s'emploie à identifier les repères spatiaux des Français et leur actualisation imparfaite en tirant profit, à titre qualitatif, des enseignements de l'iconographie, des lettres privées, des rumeurs ou des archives des pratiques éducatives.

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the stability issue in determining absorption and diffusion coefficients in quantitative photoacoustic imaging. Assuming that the optical wave is generated by point sources in a region where the optical coefficients are known, we derive pointwise H{\"o}lder stability estimate of the inversion. This result shows that the reconstruction of the optical coefficients is stable in the region close to the optical illumination sources and deteriorate exponentially far away. Our stability estimate is therefore in accordance with known experimental observations. Mathematics subject classification : 35R30.

Abstract: International audience; Numerical simulation of cable systems remain delicate due to their geometrical non-linearity and also to their intrinsic unilateral constitutive law. Indeed finite element approaches (if not implemented carefully) fail to predict accurate equilibrium for cable structures. The major issue to be addressed is the ill-conditioning, starting configuration and wrong choice of descent direction during iterative methods. An iterative scheme based on Finite Element Method is presented to overcome this issue, even with large number of elements.

Abstract: International audience; Speech technology plays an important role in our everyday life. Speech is, among others, used for human-computer interaction, including, for instance, information retrieval and on-line shopping. In the case of an unwritten language, however, speech technology is unfortunately difficult to create, because it cannot be created by the standard combination of pre-trained speech-to-text and text-to-speech subsystems. The research presented in this paper takes the first steps towards speech technology for unwritten languages. Specifically, the aim of this work was 1) to learn speech-to-meaning representations without using text as an intermediate representation, and 2) to test the sufficiency of the learned representations to regenerate speech or translated text, or to retrieve images that depict the meaning of an utterance in an unwritten language. The results suggest that building systems that go directly from speech-to-meaning and from meaning-to-speech, bypassing the need for text, is possible.

Abstract: International audience; This paper provides an overview of the 2022 COLING Scholarly Document Processing workshop shared task on the detection of automatically generated scientific papers. We frame the detection problem as a binary classification task: given an excerpt of text, label it as either human-written or machine-generated. We shared a dataset containing excerpts from human-written papers as well as artificially generated content and suspicious documents collected by Elsevier publishing and editorial teams. As a test set, the participants were provided with a 5x larger corpus of openly accessible human-written as well as generated papers from the same scientific domains of documents. The shared task saw 180 submissions across 14 participating teams and resulted in two published technical reports. We discuss our findings from the shared task in this overview paper.

Abstract: International audience; Shape-changing User Interfaces (UIs) explore the ability of a UI to change its physical shape to support multiple interaction modalities for users’ input and/or system’s output. An approach currently studied to implement such interfaces at a high resolution is based on mm-sized, round, and self-actuated modules. The problem we tackle in this paper is to find the range of usable sizes of such modules, to better inform the trade-off between usability and technological feasibility. We assessed four sliders in a controlled user study: a standard slider and three sliders made of mock-up rounded modules of ø1 mm, ø2.5 mm, and ø5 mm. Experimental results show that (1) ø5 mm modules significantly impair performance for the pursuit task and subjective perception for both tasks, (2) performance increases when the size of modules decreases, but (3) users reportedly enjoyed the haptic feedback provided by ø1 mm to ø2.5 mm modules. These results provide deeper understanding on the impact of the size of modules on performance and subjective perception to inform current technological development of physical user interfaces made of small robotic modules.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we consider multi-dimensional partial differential equations of parabolic type involving divergence form operators that possess a discontinuous coefficient matrix along some smooth interface. The solution of the equation is assumed to present a compatibility transmission condition of its conormal derivatives at this interface (multi-dimensional diffraction problem). We prove an existence and uniqueness result for the solution and construct a low complexity numerical Monte Carlo stochastic Euler scheme to approximate the solution of the parabolic partial differential equation in divergence form. In particular, we give new estimates for the partial derivatives of the solution. Using these estimates, we prove a convergence rate for our stochastic numerical method when the initial condition belongs to an iterated domain of the divergence form operator. Our method presents the same convergence rate as the stochastic numerical schemes elaborated for the same problem in the one-dimensional context. Finally, we compare our results to classical deterministic numerical approximations and illustrate the accuracy of our method.

The reasons for adopting the CIDOC CRM as a core ontology for this field, but extending it with some relevant, missing high-level classes, will be discussed while taking advantage of the methodological tools provided by the foundational ontologies DOLCE and DnS. Finally, the talk will show how collaborative data modelling carried out in the ontology management environment OntoME (ontome.net) makes it possible to elaborate a communal fine-grained and adaptive ontology of the domain.

Abstract: Multiple morphological anomalies of the sperm flagella (MMAF syndrome) is a severe male infertility phenotype which has so far been formally linked to the presence of biallelic mutations in nine genes mainly coding for axonemal proteins overexpressed in the sperm flagellum. Homozygous mutations in QRICH2, a gene coding for a protein known to be required for stabilizing proteins involved in sperm flagellum biogenesis, have recently been identified in MMAF patients from two Chinese consanguineous families. Here, in order to better assess the contribution of QRICH2 in the etiology of the MMAF phenotype, we analyzed all QRICH2 variants from whole exome sequencing data of a cohort of 167 MMAF-affected subjects originating from North Africa, Iran, and Europe. We identified a total of 14 potentially deleterious variants in 18 unrelated individuals. Two unrelated subjects, representing 1% of the cohort, carried a homozygous loss-of-function variant: c.3501C>G [p.Tyr1167Ter] and c.4614C>G [p.Tyr1538Ter], thus confirming the implication of QRICH2 in the MMAF phenotype and human male infertility. Sixteen MMAF patients (9.6%) carried a heterozygous QRICH2 potentially deleterious variant. This rate was comparable to what was observed in a control group (15.5%) suggesting that the presence of QRICH2 heterozygous variants is not associated with MMAF syndrome.

Abstract: Boosted by the simultaneous translation shared task at IWSLT 2020, promising end-to-end online speech translation approaches were recently proposed. They consist in incrementally encoding a speech input (in a source language) and decoding the corresponding text (in a target language) with the best possible trade-off between latency and translation quality. This paper investigates two key aspects of end-to-end simultaneous speech translation: (a) how to encode efficiently the continuous speech flow, and (b) how to segment the speech flow in order to alternate optimally between reading (R: encoding input) and writing (W: decoding output) operations. We extend our previously proposed end-to-end online decoding strategy and show that while replacing BLSTM by ULSTM encoding degrades performance in offline mode, it actually improves both efficiency and performance in online mode. We also measure the impact of different methods to segment the speech signal (using fixed interval boundaries, oracle word boundaries or randomly set boundaries) and show that our best end-to-end online decoding strategy is surprisingly the one that alternates R/W operations on fixed size blocks on our English-German speech translation setup., Accepted for presentation at Interspeech 2021

Abstract: International audience; Risk measures of a financial position are, from an empirical point of view, mainly based on quantiles. Replacing quantiles with their least squares analogues, called expectiles, has recently received increasing attention. The novel expectile-based risk measures satisfy all coherence requirements. We revisit their extreme value estimation for heavy-tailed distributions. First, we estimate the underlying tail index via weighted combinations of top order statistics and asymmetric least squares estimates. The resulting expectHill estimators are then used as the basis for estimating tail expectiles and Expected Shortfall. The asymptotic theory of the proposed estimators is provided, along with numerical simulations and applications to actuarial and financial data.

Abstract: We consider non-degenerate graph immersions into affine space $\mathbb A^{n+1}$ whose cubic form is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the affine metric. There exists a correspondence between such graph immersions and pairs $(J,\gamma)$, where $J$ is an $n$-dimensional real Jordan algebra and $\gamma$ is a non-degenerate trace form on $J$. Every graph immersion with parallel cubic form can be extended to an affine complete symmetric space covering the maximal connected component of zero in the set of quasi-regular elements in the algebra $J$. It is an improper affine hypersphere if and only if the corresponding Jordan algebra is nilpotent. In this case it is an affine complete, Euclidean complete graph immersion, with a polynomial as globally defining function. We classify all such hyperspheres up to dimension 5. As a special case we describe a connection between Cayley hypersurfaces and polynomial quotient algebras. This leads us to provide estimators for the affinity parameters that are shown to be almost surely consistent. Their asymptotic normality provide confidence intervals for parameters. This paper offered an important opportunity to study general level functionals near the level u, part of the difficulties arises from the fact that the topology of level set C_{T,X} (u) = {t ∈ T : X(t) = u} can be irregular, even if the trajectories of X are regular. A significant part of the paper is dedicated to show the L^2-continuity in the level u of these general functionals.

Abstract: In this paper, we provide an overview of the ninth annual edition of the CLEF eHealth evaluation lab. CLEF eHealth 2021 continues our evaluation resource building efforts around the easing and support of patients, their next-of-kins, health care professionals, and health scientists in understanding, accessing, and authoring electronic health information in a multilingual setting. The 2021 lab offered two tasks: Task 1 on multilingual Information Extraction (IE), this year extending to a corpus of Spanish radiology reports; and Task 2 on Consumer Health Search (CHS) that builds on the previous year’s Information Retrieval (IR) tasks. In total, 11 teams took part in these tasks (7 in Task 1 on IE and 4 in Task 2 on IR). Herein, we describe the resources created for these tasks and the evaluation methodology adopted, and we provide a brief summary of the participants of this year’s challenges as well as the results obtained. As in previous years, the organizers have made data, tools, and more specific overview papers associated with the lab tasks available for future research and development.

Abstract: International audience; In this book chapter we address the problem of 3D shape registration and we propose a novel technique based on spectral graph theory and probabilistic matching. Recent advancement in shape acquisition technology has led to the capture of large amounts of 3D data. Existing real-time multi-camera 3D acquisition methods provide a frame-wise reliable visual-hull or mesh representations for real 3D animation sequences The task of 3D shape analysis involves tracking, recognition, registration, etc. Analyzing 3D data in a single framework is still a challenging task considering the large variability of the data gathered with different acquisition devices. 3D shape registration is one such challenging shape analysis task. The main contribution of this chapter is to extend the spectral graph matching methods to very large graphs by combining spectral graph matching with Laplacian embedding. Since the embedded representation of a graph is obtained by dimensionality reduction we claim that the existing spectral-based methods are not easily applicable. We discuss solutions for the exact and inexact graph isomorphism problems and recall the main spectral properties of the combinatorial graph Laplacian; We provide a novel analysis of the commute-time embedding that allows us to interpret the latter in terms of the PCA of a graph, and to select the appropriate dimension of the associated embedded metric space; We derive a unit hyper-sphere normalization for the commute-time embedding that allows us to register two shapes with different samplings; We propose a novel method to find the eigenvalue-eigenvector ordering and the eigenvector sign using the eigensignature (histogram) which is invariant to the isometric shape deformations and fits well in the spectral graph matching framework, and we present a probabilistic shape matching formulation using an expectation maximization point registration algorithm which alternates between aligning the eigenbases and finding a vertex-to-vertex assignment.

Abstract: The TREC Video Retrieval Evaluation (TRECVID) is a TREC-style video analysis and retrieval evaluation with the goal of promoting progress in research and development of content-based exploitation and retrieval of information from digital video via open, metrics-based evaluation. Over the last twenty years this effort has yielded a better understanding of how systems can effectively accomplish such processing and how one can reliably benchmark their performance. TRECVID has been funded by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and other US government agencies. In addition, many organizations and individuals worldwide contribute significant time and effort. TRECVID 2020 represented a continuation of four tasks and the addition of two new tasks. In total, 29 teams from various research organizations worldwide completed one or more of the following six tasks: 1. Ad-hoc Video Search (AVS), 2. Instance Search (INS), 3. Disaster Scene Description and Indexing (DSDI), 4. Video to Text Description (VTT), 5. Activities in Extended Video (ActEV), 6. Video Summarization (VSUM). Abstract: International audience; Coulomb friction model with unilateral contact is a basic, but reliable, model to represent the resistance to sliding between solid bodies. It is nowadays well-known that this model can be formulated as a second-order cone complementarity problem, or equivalently, as a variational inequality. In this article, the Coulomb friction model is enriched to take into account the resistance to rolling, also known as rolling friction. Introducing the rolling friction cone, an extended Coulomb's cone, and its dual, a formulation of the Coulomb friction with rolling resistance as a cone complementarity problem is shown to be equivalent to the standard formulation of the Coulomb friction with rolling resistance. Based on this complementarity formulation, the maximum dissipation principle and the bi-potential function are derived. Several iterative numerical methods based on projected fixed point iterations for variational inequalities and block-splitting techniques are given. The efficiency of these methods strongly relies on the computation of the projection onto the rolling friction cone. In this article, an original closed-form formulae for the projection on the rolling friction cone is derived. The abilities of the model and the numerical methods are illustrated on the examples of a single sphere sliding and rolling on a plane, and of the evolution of spheres piles under gravity.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we address the problem of building a class of robust factorization algorithms that solve for the shape and motion parameters with both affine (weak perspective) and perspective camera models. We introduce a Gaussian/uniform mixture model and its associated EM algorithm. This allows us to address robust parameter estimation within a data clustering approach. We propose a robust technique that works with any affine factorization method and makes it robust to outliers. In addition, we show how such a framework can be further embedded into an iterative perspective factorization scheme. We carry out a large number of experiments to validate our algorithms and to compare them with existing ones. We also compare our approach with factorization methods that use M-estimators.

Abstract: International audience; Matching articulated shapes represented by voxelsets reduces to maximal sub-graph isomorphism when each set is described by a weighted graph. Spectral graph theory can be used to isometrically map these graphs onto lower dimensional spaces and match shapes by aligning their embeddings in virtue of their invariance to change of pose. Classical graph isomorphism schemes relying on the ordering of the eigenvalues to align Laplacian eigenvectors fail when handling large data-sets or noisy data. We derive a new formulation equivalent to finding the best alignment between two congruentK-dimensional sets of points, where the dimensionK of the embedding space results from the selection of the best subset of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian operator. This set is detected by matching the signatures of those eigenfunctions expressed as histograms, and provides a smart initialization for the alignment problem with a considerable impact on the overall performance. Dense matching then reduces to point registration of embeddings under orthogonal transformations; a task we cast into the framework of unsupervised clustering and solve using the EM algorithm. Maximal subset matching of non identical shapes is handled by defining an appropriate outlier class. Experimental results on challenging examples show how the algorithm naturally treats changes of topology, shape variations and different sampling densities.

Abstract: The geometry of binocular projection is analyzed, with reference to the primate visual system. In particular, the effects of coordinated eye movements on the retinal images are investigated. An appropriate oculomotor parameterization is defined, and is shown to complement the classical version and vergence angles. The midline horopter is identified, and subsequently used to construct the epipolar geometry of the system. It is shown that the Essential matrix can be obtained by combining the epipoles with the projection of the midline horopter. A local model of the scene is adopted, in which depth is measured relative to a plane containing the fixation point. The binocular disparity field is given a symmetric parameterization, in which the unknown scene-depths determine the location of corresponding image-features. The resulting Cyclopean depth-map can be combined with the estimated oculomotor parameters, to produce a local representation of the scene. The recovery of visual direction and depth from retinal images is discussed, with reference to the relevant psychophysical and neurophysiological literature.

Abstract: International audience; The receptive fields of simple cells in the visual cortex can be understood as linear filters. These filters can be modelled by Gabor functions, or by Gaussian derivatives. Gabor functions can also be combined in an energy model of the complex cell response. This work proposes an alternative model of the complex cell, based on Gaussian derivatives. It is most important to account for the insensitivity of the complex response to small shifts of the image. The new model uses a linear combination of the first few derivative filters, at a single position, to approximate the first derivative filter, at a series of adjacent positions. The maximum response, over all positions, gives a signal that is insensitive to small shifts of the image. This model, unlike previous approaches, is based on the scale-space theory of visual processing. In particular, the complex cell is built from filters that respond to the 2-D differential structure of the image. The computational aspects of the new model are studied in one and two dimensions, using the steerability of the Gaussian derivatives. The response of the model to basic images, such as edges and gratings, is derived formally. The response to natural images is also evaluated, using statistical measures of shift insensitivity. The relevance of the new model to the cortical image-representation is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the issue of matching rigid and articulated shapes through probabilistic point registration. The problem is recast into a missing data framework where unknown correspondences are handled via mixture models. Adopting a maximum likelihood principle, we introduce an innovative EM-like algorithm, namely the Expectation Conditional Maximization for Point Registration (ECMPR) algorithm. The algorithm allows the use of general covariance matrices for the mixture model components and improves over the isotropic covariance case. We analyse in detail the associated consequences in terms of estimation of the registration parameters, and we propose an optimal method for estimating the rotational and translational parameters based on semi-definite positive relaxation. We extend rigid registration to articulated registration. Robustness is ensured by detecting and rejecting outliers through the addition of a uniform component to the Gaussian mixture model at hand. We provide an in-depth analysis of our method and we compare it both theoretically and experimentally with other robust methods for point registration.

Abstract: International audience; We present a new method for first person sketch-based editing of terrain models. As in usual artistic pictures, the input sketch depicts complex silhouettes with cusps and T-junctions, which typically correspond to non-planar curves in 3D. After analysing depth constraints in the sketch based on perceptual cues, our method best matches the sketched silhouettes with silhouettes or ridges of the input terrain. A specific deformation algorithm is then applied to the terrain, enabling it to exactly match the sketch from the given perspective view, while insuring that none of the user-defined silhouettes is hidden by another part of the terrain. As our results show, this method enables users to easily personalize an existing terrain, while preserving its plausibility and style.

Abstract: Data-driven models of the 3D face are a promising direction for capturing the subtle complexities of the human face, and a central component to numerous applications thanks to their ability to simplify complex tasks. Most data-driven approaches to date were built from either a relatively limited number of samples or by synthetic data augmentation, mainly because of the difficulty in obtaining large-scale and accurate 3D scans of the face. Yet, there is a substantial amount of information that can be gathered when considering publicly available sources that have been captured over the last decade, whose combination can potentially bring forward more powerful models.This thesis proposes novel methods for building data-driven models of the 3D face geometry, and investigates whether improved performances can be obtained by learning from large and varied datasets of 3D facial scans. In order to make efficient use of a large number of training samples we develop novel deep learning techniques designed to effectively handle three-dimensional face data. We focus on several aspects that influence the geometry of the face: its shape components including fine details, its motion components such as expression, and the interaction between these two subspaces.We develop in particular two approaches for building generative models that decouple the latent space according to natural sources of variation, e.g.identity and expression. The first approach considers a novel deep autoencoder architecture that allows to learn a multilinear model without requiring the training data to be assembled as a complete tensor. We next propose a novel non-linear model based on adversarial training that further improves the decoupling capacity. This is enabled by a new 3D-2D architecture combining a 3D generator with a 2D discriminator, where both domains are bridged by a geometry mapping layer.As a necessary prerequisite for building data-driven models, we also address the problem of registering a large number of 3D facial scans in motion. We propose an approach that can efficiently and automatically handle a variety of sequences while making minimal assumptions on the input data. This is achieved by the use of a spatiotemporal model as well as a regression-based initialization, and we show that we can obtain accurate registrations in an efficient and scalable manner.Finally, we address the problem of recovering surface normals from natural images, with the goal of enriching existing coarse 3D reconstructions. We propose a method that can leverage all available image and normal data, whether paired or not, thanks to a new cross-modal learning architecture. Core to our approach is a novel module that we call deactivable skip connections, which allows to transfer the local details from the image to the output surface without hurting the performance when autoencoding modalities, achieving state-of-the-art results for the task., Les modèles du visage 3D fondés sur des données sont une direction prometteuse pour capturer les subtilités complexes du visage humain, et une composante centrale de nombreuses applications grâce à leur capacité à simplifier des tâches complexes. La plupart des approches basées sur les données à ce jour ont été construites à partir d’un nombre limité d’échantillons ou par une augmentation par données synthétiques, principalement en raison de la difficulté à obtenir des scans 3D à grande échelle. Pourtant, il existe une quantité substantielle d’informations qui peuvent être recueillies lorsque l’on considère les sources publiquement accessibles qui ont été capturées au cours de la dernière décennie, dont la combinaison peut potentiellement apporter des modèles plus puissants.Cette thèse propose de nouvelles méthodes pour construire des modèles de la géométrie du visage 3D fondés sur des données, et examine si des performances améliorées peuvent être obtenues en apprenant à partir d’ensembles de données vastes et variés. Afin d’utiliser efficacement un grand nombre d’échantillons d’apprentissage, nous développons de nouvelles techniques d’apprentissage profond conçues pour gérer efficacement les données faciales tri-dimensionnelles. Nous nous concentrons sur plusieurs aspects qui influencent la géométrie du visage : ses composantes de forme, y compris les détails, ses composants de mouvement telles que l’expression, et l’interaction entre ces deux sous-espaces.Nous développons notamment deux approches pour construire des modèles génératifs qui découplent l’espace latent en fonction des sources naturelles de variation, e.g.identité et expression. La première approche considère une nouvelle architecture d’auto-encodeur profond qui permet d’apprendre un modèle multilinéaire sans nécessiter l’assemblage des données comme un tenseur complet. Nous proposons ensuite un nouveau modèle non linéaire basé sur l’apprentissage antagoniste qui davantage améliore la capacité de découplage. Ceci est rendu possible par une nouvelle architecture 3D-2D qui combine un générateur 3D avec un discriminateur 2D, où les deux domaines sont connectés par une couche de projection géométrique.En tant que besoin préalable à la construction de modèles basés sur les données, nous abordons également le problème de mise en correspondance d’un grand nombre de scans 3D de visages en mouvement. Nous proposons une approche qui peut gérer automatiquement une variété de séquences avec des hypothèses minimales sur les données d’entrée. Ceci est réalisé par l’utilisation d’un modèle spatio-temporel ainsi qu’une initialisation basée sur la régression, et nous montrons que nous pouvons obtenir des correspondances précises d’une manière efficace et évolutive.Finalement, nous abordons le problème de la récupération des normales de surface à partir d’images naturelles, dans le but d’enrichir les reconstructions 3D grossières existantes. Nous proposons une méthode qui peut exploiter toutes les images disponibles ainsi que les données normales, qu’elles soient couplées ou non, grâce à une nouvelle architecture d’apprentissage cross-modale. Notre approche repose sur un nouveau module qui permet de transférer les détails locaux de l’image vers la surface de sortie sans nuire aux performances lors de l’auto-encodage des modalités, en obtenant des résultats de pointe pour la tâche.

Abstract: Jack Ralite a été maire adjoint chargé de la culture et de l’éducation à Aubervilliers entre mars 1959 et 1984 puis maire de 1984 à 2003. Il a contribué à faire de cette banlieue un territoire de décentralisation culturelle pionnier. Il est devenu député de la Seine-Saint-Denis en 1973 puis sénateur à partir de 1995. Entretemps, il a fait partie des quatre ministres communistes du gouvernement de François Mitterrand. Il s’est principalement mobilisé pour défendre l’audiovisuel public et la création théâtrale. Lors des États Généraux de la Culture (après 1986) il a œuvré pour la défense des « droits de la culture ». Notre propos consiste à questionner l’itinéraire d’un acteur culturel communiste, à situer ses conceptions de la culture parmi celles des gauches contemporaines à un moment particulièrement marqué en France par le développement des chaines privées de télévision et par l’essor des luttes pour défendre l’audiovisuel public. Jack Ralite was the deputy mayor in charge of culture and education in the city of Aubervilliers, France between March 1959 and 1984 and then mayor from 1984 to 2003. He contributed to making this suburb a pioneering area of cultural decentralization. He became member of Parliament for Seine-Saint-Denis in 1973 and then became a senator in 1995. In the meantime, he was one of the four communist ministers in the government of François Mitterrand. He was mainly mobilized to defend the public audiovisual and theater creation. During the “Etats Généraux de la Culture” (after 1986) his work aimed at defending the “rights of culture”. Our aim is to question the itinerary of a communist cultural actor, to position his conceptions about culture among those of contemporary leftists at a time particularly marked in France by the development of private television channels and by the increasing struggles to defend the public audiovisual.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses the problem of a boundary control design for traffic evolving in a large urban network. The traffic state is described on a macroscopic scale and corresponds to the vehicle density, whose dynamics are governed by a two dimensional conservation law. We aim at designing a boundary control law such that the throughput of vehicles in a congested area is maximized. Thereby, the only knowledge we use is the network's topology, capacities of its roads and speed limits. In order to achieve this goal, we treat a 2D equation as a set of 1D equations by introducing curvilinear coordinates satisfying special properties. The theoretical results are verified on a numerical example, where an initially fully congested area is driven to a state with maximum possible throughput.

Abstract: Evaluation of remote direct memory access data transfer from an X-ray detector head into a remote-processing graphics processor unit in the scope of a synchrotron serial crystallography experiment performed at 1000 images s−1., The continual evolution of photon sources and high-performance detectors drives cutting-edge experiments that can produce very high throughput data streams and generate large data volumes that are challenging to manage and store. In these cases, efficient data transfer and processing architectures that allow online image correction, data reduction or compression become fundamental. This work investigates different technical options and methods for data placement from the detector head to the processing computing infrastructure, taking into account the particularities of modern modular high-performance detectors. In order to compare realistic figures, the future ESRF beamline dedicated to macromolecular X-ray crystallography, EBSL8, is taken as an example, which will use a PSI JUNGFRAU 4M detector generating up to 16 GB of data per second, operating continuously during several minutes. Although such an experiment seems possible at the target speed with the 100 Gb s−1 network cards that are currently available, the simulations generated highlight some potential bottlenecks when using a traditional software stack. An evaluation of solutions is presented that implements remote direct memory access (RDMA) over converged ethernet techniques. A synchronization mechanism is proposed between a RDMA network interface card (RNIC) and a graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerator in charge of the online data processing. The placement of the detector images onto the GPU is made to overlap with the computation carried out, potentially hiding the transfer latencies. As a proof of concept, a detector simulator and a backend GPU receiver with a rejection and compression algorithm suitable for a synchrotron serial crystallography (SSX) experiment are developed. It is concluded that the available transfer throughput from the RNIC to the GPU accelerator is at present the major bottleneck in online processing for SSX experiments.

Abstract: Non-local self-similarity and sparsity principles have proven to be powerful priors for natural image modeling. We propose a novel differentiable relaxation of joint sparsity that exploits both principles and leads to a general framework for image restoration which is (1) trainable end to end, (2) fully interpretable, and (3) much more compact than competing deep learning architectures. We apply this approach to denoising, jpeg deblocking, and demosaicking, and show that, with as few as 100K parameters, its performance on several standard benchmarks is on par or better than state-of-the-art methods that may have an order of magnitude or more parameters., ECCV 2020

Abstract: We present a non-commutative algorithm for the multiplication of a 2x2-block-matrix by its transpose using 5 block products (3 recursive calls and 2 general products) over C or any finite field.We use geometric considerations on the space of bilinear forms describing 2x2 matrix products to obtain this algorithm and we show how to reduce the number of involved additions.The resulting algorithm for arbitrary dimensions is a reduction of multiplication of a matrix by its transpose to general matrix product, improving by a constant factor previously known reductions.Finally we propose schedules with low memory footprint that support a fast and memory efficient practical implementation over a finite field.To conclude, we show how to use our result in LDLT factorization., ISSAC 2020, Jul 2020, Kalamata, Greece

Abstract: International audience; The main goal of this paper is to analytically find a steady-state in a large-scale urban traffic network with known and constant demand and supply on its boundaries. Traffic dynamics are given by a continuous two-dimensional macroscopic model, where state corresponds to the vehicle density evolving in a 2D plane. Thereby, the flux magnitude is given by the space-dependent fundamental diagram and the flux direction depends on the underlying network topology. In order to find a steady-state, we use the coordinate transformation such that the 2D equation can be rewritten as a parametrized set of 1D equations. This technique allows us to obtain the curves along which the traffic flow evolves, which are essentially the integral curves of the flux field constructed from the network geometry. The results are validated by comparing the obtained steady-state with the one estimated by using a microsimulator.

Abstract: International audience; The problem of stabilization of a system of coupled PDEs of the forth-order by means of boundary control is investigated. The considered setuparises from the classical Euler-Bernoulli beam model, and constitutes ageneralization of flexible mechanical systems. A linear feedback controlleris proposed, and using an abstract formulation based on operator semi-group theory, we are able to prove the well-posedness and the stability ofthe closed-loop system. The performances of the proposed controller areillustrated by means of numerical simulations.

Abstract: Only few rheological models in the literature simultaneously capture the two main non-Newtonian trends of non-colloidal suspensions, namely finite normal stress differences and transient effects. We address this issue by extending a previously proposed minimal model accounting for microstructure anisotropy through a conformation tensor, which was shown to correctly predict transient effects (Ozenda, Saramito & Chambon, J. Rheol., vol. 62 (4), 2018, pp. 889–903). A systematic sensitivity study was performed to provide insights into the physical interpretation of the various model terms. This new model is compared to a large experimental dataset involving varying volume fractions, from dilute to concentrated cases. Both apparent viscosity and normal stress differences in steady state are quantitatively reproduced in the whole range of volume fraction, and qualitative agreement for transient evolution of apparent viscosity during shear reversal is obtained. Furthermore, the model is validated against particle pressure measurements that were not used for parameter identification. Even if the proposed constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress tensor is more difficult to interpret than in the minimal model, this study opens the way for the use of conformation tensor rheological models in applications where the effect of normal stress differences is prominent, like elongational flows or particle migration processes.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel hybrid dynamical model for hysteretic actuators consisting of spring-loaded Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires. The hybrid description is obtained by reformulating a set of physics-based ODEs resulting from the Muller-Achenbach-Seelecke (MAS) model of SMA material. Although the MAS model provides an accurate and consistent description of the system hysteresis, its use for simulation and control is limited due to the highly nonlinear and stiff nature of the resulting ODEs. By means of the hybrid reformulation, the numerical stiffness can be effectively eliminated while keeping all the benefits of the physics-based description. The different operating modes and transitions are first described from a physical point of view and then used to develop the flow and jump dynamics of the resulting hybrid model. Numerical simulations show that both hybrid and physics-based models provide nearly identical results. In addition, it is observed that the former requires simulation times that are up to two orders of magnitude smaller than the latter.

Abstract: International audience; We introduce a family of multilayer graph kernels and establish new links between graph convolutional neural networks and kernel methods. Our approach generalizes convolutional kernel networks to graph-structured data, by representing graphs as a sequence of kernel feature maps, where each node carries information about local graph substructures. On the one hand, the kernel point of view offers an unsupervised, expressive, and easy-to-regularize data representation, which is useful when limited samples are available. On the other hand, our model can also be trained end-to-end on large-scale data, leading to new types of graph convolutional neural networks. We show that our method achieves competitive performance on several graph classification benchmarks, while offering simple model interpretation. Abstract: International audience; Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has become the most used method for image classification tasks. During its training the learning rate and the gradient are two key factors to tune for influencing the convergence speed of the model. Usual learning rate strategies are time-based i.e. monotonous decay over time. Recent state-of-the-art techniques focus on adaptive gradient algorithms i.e. Adam and its versions. In this paper we consider an online learning scenario and we propose two Event-Based control loops to adjust the learning rate of a classical algorithm E (Exponential)/PD (Proportional Derivative)-Control. The first Event-Based control loop will be implemented to prevent sudden drop of the learning rate when the model is approaching the optimum. The second Event- Based control loop will decide, based on the learning speed, when to switch to the next data batch. Experimental evaluation is provided using two state-of-the-art machine learning image datasets (CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100). Results show the Event- Based E/PD is better than the original algorithm (higher final accuracy, lower final loss value), and the Double-Event-Based E/PD can accelerate the training process, save up to 67% training time compared to state-of-the-art algorithms and even result in better performance.

Abstract: This paper considers the problem of stabilizing a linear time-invariant system in the presence of plant measurements that are available in an intermittent fashion. We propose a dynamic output feedback controller equipped with a holding device that is a linear time-invariant system whose state is reset when a new measure is available. We provide an LMI-based design procedure for the co-design of the dynamic controller and holding device parameters. Our approach relies on Lyapunov theory for hybrid systems and addresses the stability analysis in a way that is reminiscent of an "input- to-state stability small gain" philosophy. The effectiveness of the proposed LMI-based design is showcased in a numerical example.
