Ultralight candidates for dark matter can present wavelike features on astrophysical scales. Full wave based simulations of such candidates are currently limited to box sizes of 1--10 Mpc/$h$ on a side, limiting our understanding of the impact of wave dynamics on the scale of the cosmic web. We present a statistical analysis of density fields produced by perturbative forward models in boxes of 128 Mpc/$h$ side length. Our wave-based perturbation theory maintains interference on all scales, and is compared to fluid dynamics of Lagrangian perturbation theory. The impact of suppressed power in the initial conditions and interference effects caused by wave dynamics can then be disentangled. We find that changing the initial conditions captures most of the change in one-point statistics such as the skewness of the density field. However, different environments of the cosmic web, quantified by critical points of the smoothed density, appear to be more sensitive to interference effects sourced by the quantum potential. In this work, we demonstrate the constraining power of the tomographic weak lensing convergence PDF for StageIV-like source galaxy redshift bins and shape noise. We focus on scales of $10$ to $20$ arcmin in the mildly nonlinear regime, where the convergence PDF and its changes with cosmological parameters can be predicted theoretically. We model the impact of reconstructing the convergence from the shear field using the well-known Kaiser-Squires formalism. We cross-validate the predicted and the measured convergence PDF derived from convergence maps reconstructed using simulated shear catalogues. Employing a Fisher forecast, we determine the constraining power for $(\Omega_{m},S_{8},w_{0})$. We find that adding a 5-bin tomography improves the $\kappa-$PDF constraints by a factor of $\{3.8,1.3,1.6\}$ for $(\Omega_{m}, S_{8},w_{0})$ respectively. Additionally, we perform a joint analysis with the shear two-point correlation functions, finding an enhancement of around a factor of $1.5$ on all parameters with respect to the two-point statistics alone. These improved constraints come from disentangling $\Omega_{\rm m}$ from $w_0$ by extracting non-Gaussian information, in particular, including the PDF skewness at different redshift bins. We also study the effect of varying the number of parameters to forecast, in particular we add $h$, finding that the convergence PDF maintains its constraining power while the precision from two-point correlations degrades by a factor of $\{1.7,1.4,1.8\}$ for $\{\Omega_{\rm m},S_8,w_0\}$, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures

The last few years have seen the development of a promising theoretical framework for statistics of the cosmic large-scale structure -- the theory of large deviations (LDT) for modelling weak-lensing one-point statistics in the mildly non-linear regime. The goal of this series of papers is to make the leap and lay out the steps to perform an actual data analysis with this theoretical tool. Building upon the LDT framework, in this work (Paper I) we demonstrate how to accurately model the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of a reconstructed Kaiser-Squires convergence field under a realistic mask, that of the third data release of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We also present how weak lensing systematics and higher-order lensing corrections due to intrinsic alignments, shear biases, photo-$z$ errors and baryonic feedback can be incorporated in the modelling of the reconstructed convergence PDF. Key non-Gaussian properties of cosmological fields can be captured by their one-point statistics, providing a complement to two-point statistical measurements from power spectra or correlation functions. Large deviation theory can robustly predict the one-point statistics of cosmological density fields on mildly non-linear scales from first principles. It provides a direct prediction for the cumulant generating function (CGF) of such fields, from which a prediction for the more commonly used probability density function (PDF) is extracted through an inverse Laplace transform. For joint one-point statistics of multiple fields, the inverse Laplace transform rapidly becomes more cumbersome and computationally expensive. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that the weak lensing CGF itself can be used as an observable that captures an equal amount of cosmological information to the PDF. While we use the weak-lensing convergence field as a simplistic and instructive example, this work is intended as a first step towards a cosmological analysis based on large deviation theory in the context of a nulling framework, which excludes contributions from small scales to facilitate highly accurate theoretical predictions. One-point probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the cosmic matter density are powerful cosmological probes that extract non-Gaussian properties of the matter distribution and complement two-point statistics. Computing the covariance of one-point PDFs is key for building a robust galaxy survey analysis for upcoming surveys like Euclid and the Rubin Observatory LSST and requires good models for the two-point PDFs characterising spatial correlations. In this work, we obtain accurate PDF covariances using effective shifted lognormal two-point PDF models for the mildly non-Gaussian weak lensing convergence and validate our predictions against large sets of Gaussian and non-Gaussian maps. We show how the dominant effects in the covariance matrix capturing super-sample covariance arise from a large-separation expansion of the two-point PDF and discuss differences between the covariances obtained from small patches and full sky maps. Finally, we describe how our formalism can be extended to characterise the PDF covariance for 3D-dimensional spectroscopic fields using the 3D matter PDF as an example. The classical dynamics of collisionless cold dark matter, commonly described by fluid variables or a phase-space distribution, can be captured in a single semiclassical wavefunction. We illustrate how classical multi-streaming creates wave interference in a toy model corresponding to the dynamics of the Zel'dovich approximation and link it to diffraction optics. Wave interference dresses the classical skeleton of cold dark matter with universal features akin to the physical imprints of wavelike (or fuzzy) dark matter. We untangle this wave interference to obtain single-stream wavefunctions corresponding to the classical fluid streams, by writing the wavefunction in an integral form. Our wave decomposition captures the full phase-space information and isolates the multi-stream phenomena related to vorticity and velocity dispersion. We link the wave interference features of our system to the standard forms of diffraction catastrophe integrals, which produce bright caustics in optical fields analogous to the cold dark matter density field. The late universe contains a wealth of information about fundamental physics and gravity, wrapped up in non-Gaussian fields. To make use of as much information as possible it is necessary to go beyond two-point statistics. Rather than going to higher order N-point correlation functions, we demonstrate that the probability distribution function (PDF) of spheres in the matter field (a one-point function) already contains a significant amount of this non-Gaussian information. The matter PDF dissects different density environments which are lumped together in two-point statistics, making it particularly useful for probing modifications of gravity or expansion history. Our approach in Cataneo et. al. 2021 extends the success of Large Deviation Theory for predicting the matter PDF in $\Lambda$CDM in these ''extended'' cosmologies. A Fisher forecast demonstrates the information content in the matter PDF via constraints for a Euclid-like survey volume combining the 3D matter PDF with the 3D matter power spectrum. Adding the matter PDF halves the uncertainties on parameters in an evolving dark energy model, relative to the power spectrum alone. Additionally, the matter PDF contains enough non-linear information to substantially increase the detection significance of departures from General Relativity, with improvements up to six times the power spectrum alone. We present an analytical description of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the smoothed three-dimensional matter density field for modified gravity and dark energy. Our approach, based on the principles of Large Deviations Theory, is applicable to general extensions of the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We show that late-time changes to the law of gravity and background expansion can be included through Einstein-de Sitter spherical collapse dynamics combined with linear theory calculations and a calibration measurement of the non-linear variance of the smoothed density field from a simple numerical simulation. In a comparison to $N$-body simulations for $f(R)$, DGP and evolving dark energy theories, we find percent level accuracy around the peak of the distribution for predictions in the mildly non-linear regime. A Fisher forecast of an idealised experiment with a Euclid-like survey volume demonstrates the power of combining measurements of the 3D matter PDF with the 3D matter power spectrum. This combination is shown to halve the uncertainty on parameters for an evolving dark energy model, relative to a power spectrum analysis on its own. The PDF is also found to substantially increase the detection significance for small departures from General Relativity, with improvements of up to six times compared to the power spectrum alone. We study the connection of matter density and its tracers from the PDF perspective. One aspect of this connection is the conditional expectation value $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$ when averaging both tracer and matter density over some scale. We present a new way to incorporate a Lagrangian bias expansion of this expectation value into standard frameworks for modelling the PDF of density fluctuations and counts-in-cells statistics. Using N-body simulations and mock galaxy catalogs we confirm the accuracy of this expansion and compare it to the more commonly used Eulerian parametrization. For halos hosting typical luminous red galaxies, the Lagrangian model provides a significantly better description of $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$ at second order in perturbations. A second aspect of the matter-tracer connection is shot-noise, \ie the scatter of tracer density around $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$. It is well known that this noise can be significantly non-Poissonian and we validate the performance of a more general, two-parameter shot-noise model for different tracers and simulations. In the context of tomographic cosmic shear surveys, there exists a nulling transformation of weak lensing observations (also called BNT transform) that allows us to simplify the correlation structure of tomographic cosmic shear observations, as well as to build observables that depend only on a localised range of redshifts and thus independent from the low-redshift/small-scale modes. This procedure renders possible accurate, and from-first-principles, predictions of the convergence and aperture mass one-point distributions (PDF). We here explore other consequences of this transformation on the (reduced) numerical complexity of the estimation of the joint PDF between nulled bins and demonstrate how to use these results to make theoretical predictions., Comment: 14 pages, published by PRD, comments welcome

Pinning down the total neutrino mass and the dark energy equation of state is a key aim for upcoming galaxy surveys. Weak lensing is a unique probe of the total matter distribution whose non-Gaussian statistics can be quantified by the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the lensing convergence. We calculate the convergence PDF on mildly non-linear scales from first principles using large-deviation statistics, accounting for dark energy and the total neutrino mass. For the first time, we comprehensively validate the cosmology-dependence of the convergence PDF model against large suites of simulated lensing maps, demonstrating its percent-level precision and accuracy. We show that fast simulation codes can provide highly accurate covariance matrices, which can be combined with the theoretical PDF model to perform forecasts and eliminate the need for relying on expensive N-body simulations. Our theoretical model allows us to perform the first forecast for the convergence PDF that varies the full set of $\Lambda$CDM parameters. Our Fisher forecasts establish that the constraining power of the convergence PDF compares favourably to the two-point correlation function for a Euclid-like survey area at a single source redshift. When combined with a CMB prior from Planck, the PDF constrains both the neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and the dark energy equation of state $w_0$ more strongly than the two-point correlation function., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

The cosmic large-scale structure of our Universe is comprised of baryons and cold dark matter (CDM). Yet it is customary to treat these two components as a combined single-matter fluid with vanishing pressure, which is justified only for sufficiently large scales and late times. Here we go beyond the single-fluid approximation and develop the perturbation theory for two gravitationally coupled fluids while still assuming vanishing pressure. We mostly focus on perturbative expansions in powers of $D$ (or $D_+$), the linear structure growth of matter in a $\Lambda$CDM Universe with cosmological constant $\Lambda$. We derive in particular (1) explicit recursion relations for the two fluid densities, (2) complementary all-order results in the Lagrangian-coordinates approach, as well as (3) the associated component wavefunctions in a semi-classical approach to cosmic large-scale structure. We present a novel approach to generate higher-order initial conditions (ICs) for cosmological simulations that take into account the distinct evolution of baryons and dark matter. We focus on the numerical implementation and the validation of its performance, based on both collisionless N-body simulations and full hydrodynamic Eulerian and Lagrangian simulations. We improve in various ways over previous approaches that were limited to first-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT). Specifically, we (1) generalize nth-order LPT to multi-fluid systems, allowing 2LPT or 3LPT ICs for two-fluid simulations, (2) employ a novel propagator perturbation theory to set up ICs for Eulerian codes that are fully consistent with 1LPT or 2LPT, (3) demonstrate that our ICs resolve previous problems of two-fluid simulations by using variations in particle masses that eliminate spurious deviations from expected perturbative results, (4) show that the improvements achieved by going to higher-order PT are comparable to those seen for single-fluid ICs, and (5) demonstrate the excellent (i.e., few per cent level) agreement between Eulerian and Lagrangian simulations, once high-quality initial conditions are used. We investigate the possibility to detect primordial non-Gaussianity by analysing the bulk of the probability distribution function (PDF) of late-time cosmic density fluctuations. For this purpose we devise a new method to predict the impact of general non-Gaussian initial conditions on the late-time density PDF. At redshift $z=1$ and for a smoothing scale of 30Mpc/$h$ our predictions agree with the high-resolution Quijote N-body simulations to $\sim 0.2\%$ precision. This is within cosmic variance of a $\sim 100(\mathrm{Gpc}/h)^3$ survey volume. When restricting to this 30Mpc/$h$ smoothing scale and to mildly non-linear densities ($\delta[30\mathrm{Mpc}/h] \in [-0.3, 0.4]$) and also marginalizing over potential ignorance of the amplitude of the non-linear power spectrum an analysis of the PDF for such a survey volume can still measure the amplitude of different primordial bispectrum shapes to an accuracy of \smash{$\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}}=\pm 7.4\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}}=\pm 22.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}}=\pm 46.0$} . When pushing to smaller scales and assuming a joint analysis of the PDF with smoothing radii of 30Mpc/$h$ and 15Mpc/$h$ ($\delta[15\mathrm{Mpc}/h] \in [-0.4, 0.5]$) this improves to \smash{$\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}}=\pm 3.3\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}}=\pm 11.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}}=\pm 17.0\ $} - even when marginalizing over the non-linear variances at both scales as two free parameters. Especially, such an analysis could simultaneously measure $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and the amplitude and slope of the non-linear power spectrum. However, at 15Mpc/$h$ our predictions are only accurate to $\lesssim 0.8\%$ for the considered density range. We comprehensively analyse the cosmology dependence of counts-in-cell statistics. We focus on the shape of the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the matter density field at mildly nonlinear scales. Based on large-deviation statistics, we parametrise the cosmology dependence of the matter PDF in terms of the linear power spectrum, the growth factor, the spherical collapse dynamics, and the nonlinear variance. We extend our formalism to include massive neutrinos, finding that the total matter PDF is highly sensitive to the total neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and can disentangle it from the clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$. Using more than a million PDFs extracted from the Quijote simulations, we determine the response of the matter PDF to changing parameters in the $\nu\Lambda$CDM model and successfully cross-validate the theoretical model and the simulation measurements. We present the first $\nu\Lambda$CDM Fisher forecast for the matter PDF at multiple scales and redshifts, and its combination with the matter power spectrum. We establish that the matter PDF and the matter power spectrum are highly complementary at mildly nonlinear scales. The matter PDF is particularly powerful for constraining the matter density $\Omega_m$, clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$ and the total neutrino mass $M_\nu$. Adding the mildly nonlinear matter PDF to the mildly nonlinear matter power spectrum improves constraints on $\Omega_m$ by a factor of 5 and $\sigma_8$ by a factor of 2 when considering the three lowest redshifts. In our joint analysis of the matter PDF and matter power spectrum at three redshifts, the total neutrino mass is constrained to better than 0.01 eV with a total volume of 6 (Gpc/h)$^3$. The Quijote simulations are a set of 44,100 full N-body simulations spanning more than 7,000 cosmological models in the $\{\Omega_{\rm m}, \Omega_{\rm b}, h, n_s, \sigma_8, M_\nu, w \}$ hyperplane. At a single redshift the simulations contain more than 8.5 trillions of particles over a combined volume of 44,100 $(h^{-1}{\rm Gpc})^3$; each simulation follow the evolution of $256^3$, $512^3$ or $1024^3$ particles in a box of $1~h^{-1}{\rm Gpc}$ length. Billions of dark matter halos and cosmic voids have been identified in the simulations, whose runs required more than 35 million core hours. The Quijote simulations have been designed for two main purposes: 1) to quantify the information content on cosmological observables, and 2) to provide enough data to train machine learning algorithms. In this paper we describe the simulations and show a few of their applications. The distribution of the cosmic convergence field is modeled using a large-deviation principle where all non-Gaussian contributions are computed from first principles. The geometry of the past light cone is accounted for by constructing the total weak-lensing signal from contributions of the matter density in thin disk slices. The prediction of this model is successfully tested against numerical simulation with ray tracing, and found to be accurate within at least 5 per cent in the tails at redshift 1 and opening angle of 10 arcmin and even more so with increasing source redshift and opening angle. An accurate analytical approximation to the theory is also provided for practical implementation. The lensing kernel that mixes physical scales along the line-of-sight tends to reduce the domain of validity of this theoretical approach compared to the three dimensional case of cosmic densities in spherical cells. This effect is shown to be avoidable if a nulling procedure is implemented in order to localise the lensing line-of-sight integrations in a tomographic analysis. Accuracy in the tails is thus achieved within a percent for source redshifts between 0.5 and 1.5 and an opening angle of 10 arcmin. The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. We describe how astrophysical observations will inform our understanding of the fundamental properties of dark matter, such as particle mass, self-interaction strength, non-gravitational interactions with the Standard Model, and compact object abundances. Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. We chart a path toward solving for the nonlinear gravitational dynamics of cold dark matter by relying on a semiclassical description using the propagator. The evolution of the propagator is given by a Schr\"odinger equation, where the small parameter $\hbar$ acts as a softening scale that regulates singularities at shell-crossing. The leading-order propagator, called free propagator, is the semiclassical equivalent of the Zel'dovich approximation (ZA), that describes inertial particle motion along straight trajectories. At next-to-leading order, we solve for the propagator perturbatively and obtain, in the classical limit the displacement field from second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT). The associated velocity naturally includes an additional term that would be considered as third order in LPT. We show that this term is actually needed to preserve the underlying Hamiltonian structure, and ignoring it could lead to the spurious excitation of vorticity in certain implementations of second-order LPT. We show that for sufficiently small $\hbar$ the corresponding propagator solutions closely resemble LPT, with the additions that spurious vorticity is avoided and the dynamics at shell-crossing is regularised. Our analytical results possess a symplectic structure that allows us to advance numerical schemes for the large-scale structure. Intensity mapping surveys will provide access to a coarse view of the cosmic large-scale structure in unprecedented large volumes at high redshifts. Given the large fractions of the sky that can be efficiently scanned using emission from cosmic neutral hydrogen (HI), intensity mapping is ideally suited to probe a wide range of density environments and hence to constrain cosmology and fundamental physics. To efficiently extract information from 21cm intensities beyond average, one needs non-Gaussian statistics that capture large deviations from mean HI density. Counts-in-cells statistics are ideally suited for this purpose, as the statistics of matter densities in spheres can be predicted accurately on scales where their variance is below unity. We use a large state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamic simulation from the IllustrisTNG project to determine the relation between neutral hydrogen and matter densities in cells. We demonstrate how our theoretical knowledge about the matter PDF for a given cosmology can be used to extract a parametrisation-independent HI bias function from a measured neutral hydrogen PDF. When combining the predicted matter PDFs with a simple bias fit to the simulation, we obtain a prediction for neutral hydrogen PDFs at a few percent accuracy at scale R=5 Mpc/h from redshift z=5 to z=1. Furthermore, we find a density-dependent HI clustering signal that is consistent with theoretical expectations and could allow for joint constraints of HI bias and the amplitude of matter fluctuations or the growth of structure.

Since dark matter almost exclusively interacts gravitationally, the phase-space dynamics is described by the Vlasov-Poisson equation. A key characteristic is its infinite cumulant hierarchy, a tower of coupled evolution equations for the cumulants of the phase-space distribution. While on large scales the matter distribution is well described as a fluid and the hierarchy can be truncated, smaller scales are in the multi-stream regime in which all higher-order cumulants are sourced through nonlinear gravitational collapse. This regime is crucial for the formation of bound structures and the emergence of characteristic properties such as their density profiles. We present a novel closure strategy for the cumulant hierarchy that is inspired by finitely generated cumulants and hence beyond truncation. This constitutes a constructive approach for reducing nonlinear phase-space dynamics of Vlasov-Poisson to a closed system of equations in position space. Using this idea, we derive Schr\"odinger-Poisson as approximate quantal method for solving classical dynamics of Vlasov-Poisson with cold initial conditions. Our deduction complements the common reverse inference of the Schr\"odinger-Vlasov relation using a semi-classical limit of quantum mechanics and provides a clearer picture of the correspondence between classical and quantum dynamics. Large deviation statistics is implemented to predict the statistics of cosmic densities in cylinders applicable to photometric surveys. It yields few percent accurate analytical predictions for the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of densities in concentric or compensated cylinders; and also captures the density-dependence of their angular clustering (cylinder bias). All predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with the cosmological simulation Horizon Run 4 in the quasi-linear regime where standard perturbation theory normally breaks down. These results are combined with a simple local bias model that relates dark matter and tracer densities in cylinders and validated on simulated halo catalogues. Non-Gaussianities of dynamical origin are disentangled from primordial ones using the formalism of large deviation statistics with spherical collapse dynamics. This is achieved by relying on accurate analytical predictions for the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) and the two-point clustering of spherically-averaged cosmic densities (sphere bias). Sphere bias extends the idea of halo bias to intermediate density environments and voids as underdense regions. In the presence of primordial non-Gaussianity, sphere bias displays a strong scale dependence relevant for both high and low density regions, which is predicted analytically. The statistics of densities in spheres are built to model primordial non-Gaussianity via an initial skewness with a scale-dependence that depends on the bispectrum of the underlying model. The analytical formulas with the measured nonlinear dark matter variance as input are successfully tested against numerical simulations. For local non-Gaussianity with a range from $f_{\rm NL}=-100$ to $+100$ they are found to agree within 2\% or better for densities $\rho\in[0.5,3]$ in spheres of radius 15 Mpc$/h$ down to $z=0.35$. The validity of the large deviation statistics formalism is thereby established for all observationally relevant local-type departures from perfectly Gaussian initial conditions. The corresponding estimators for the amplitude of the nonlinear variance $\sigma_8$ and primordial skewness $f_{\rm NL}$ are validated using a fiducial joint maximum likelihood experiment. Starting from a very accurate model for density-in-cells statistics of dark matter based on large deviation theory, a bias model for the tracer density in spheres is formulated. It adopts a mean bias relation based on a quadratic bias model to relate the log-densities of dark matter to those of mass-weighted dark haloes in real and redshift space. The validity of the parametrised bias model is established using a parametrisation-independent extraction of the bias function. This average bias model is then combined with the dark matter PDF, neglecting any scatter around it: it nevertheless yields an excellent model for densities-in-cells statistics of mass tracers that is parametrised in terms of the underlying dark matter variance and three bias parameters. The procedure is validated on measurements of both the one and two point statistics of subhalo densities in the state-of-the-art Horizon Run 4 simulation showing excellent agreement for measured dark matter variance and bias parameters. Finally, it is demonstrated that this formalism allows for a joint estimation of the nonlinear dark matter variance and the bias parameters using solely the statistics of subhaloes. Having verified that galaxy counts in hydrodynamical simulations sampled on a scale of 10 Mpc/h closely resemble those of subhaloes, this work provides important steps towards making theoretical predictions for density-in-cells statistics applicable to upcoming galaxy surveys like Euclid or WFIRST., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

The analytical formalism to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of spherically-averaged cosmic densities and velocity divergences in the mildly non-linear regime is presented. A large-deviation principle is applied to those cosmic fields assuming their most likely dynamics in spheres is set by the spherical collapse model. We validate our analytical results using state-of-the-art dark matter simulations with a phase-space resolved velocity field finding a 2% percent level agreement for a wide range of velocity divergences and densities in the mildly nonlinear regime (~10Mpc/h at redshift zero), usually inaccessible to perturbation theory. From the joint PDF of densities and velocity divergences measured in two concentric spheres, we extract with the same accuracy velocity profiles and conditional velocity PDF subject to a given over/under-density which are of interest to understand the non-linear evolution of velocity flows. Both PDFs are used to build a simple but accurate maximum likelihood estimators for the redshift evolution of the variance of both the density and velocity divergence fields, which have smaller relative errors than their sample variances when non-linearities appear. Given the dependence of the velocity divergence on the growth rate, there is a significant gain in using the full knowledge of both PDFs to derive constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. We calculate the dark matter halo correlation function in redshift space using the Gaussian streaming model (GSM). To determine the scale dependent functions entering the streaming model we use local Lagrangian bias together with Convolution Lagrangian perturbation theory (CLPT) which constitutes an approximation to the Post-Zel'dovich approximation. On the basis of N-body simulations we demonstrate that a smoothing of the initial conditions with the Lagrangian radius improves the Zel'dovich approximation and its ability to predict the displacement field of proto-halos. Based on this observation we implement a "truncated" CLPT by smoothing the initial power spectrum and investigate the dependence of the streaming model ingredients on the smoothing scale. We find that the real space correlation functions of halos and their mean pairwise velocity are optimised if the coarse graining scale is chosen to be 1 Mpc/h at z=0, while the pairwise velocity dispersion is optimised if the smoothing scale is chosen to be the Lagrangian size of the halo. We compare theoretical results for the halo correlation function in redshift space to measurements within the Horizon Run 2 N-body simulation halo catalog. We find that this simple two-filter smoothing procedure in the spirit of the truncated Zel'dovich approximation significantly improves the GSM+CLPT prediction of the redshift space halo correlation function over the whole mass range from large galaxy to galaxy cluster-sized halos., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures

We present a first principle approach to obtain analytical predictions for spherically-averaged cosmic densities in the mildly non-linear regime that go well beyond what is usually achieved by standard perturbation theory. A large deviation principle allows us to compute the leading-order cumulants of average densities in concentric cells. In this symmetry, the spherical collapse model leads to cumulant generating functions that are robust for finite variances and free of critical points when logarithmic density transformations are implemented. They yield in turn accurate density probability distribution functions (PDFs) from a straightforward saddle-point approximation valid for all density values. Based on this easy-to-implement modification, explicit analytic formulas for the evaluation of the one- and two-cell PDF are provided. The theoretical predictions obtained for the PDFs are accurate to a few percent compared to the numerical integration, regardless of the density under consideration and in excellent agreement with N-body simulations for a wide range of densities. We derive the Edgeworth streaming model (ESM) for the redshift space correlation function starting from an arbitrary distribution function for biased tracers of dark matter by considering its two-point statistics and show that it reduces to the Gaussian streaming model (GSM) when neglecting non-Gaussianities. We test the accuracy of the GSM and ESM independent of perturbation theory using the Horizon Run 2 N-body halo catalog. While the monopole of the redshift space halo correlation function is well described by the GSM, higher multipoles improve upon including the leading order non-Gaussian correction in the ESM: the GSM quadrupole breaks down on scales below 30 Mpc/h whereas the ESM stays accurate to 2% within statistical errors down to 10 Mpc/h. To predict the scale dependent functions entering the streaming model we employ Convolution Lagrangian perturbation theory (CLPT) based on the dust model and local Lagrangian bias. Since dark matter halos carry an intrinsic length scale given by their Lagrangian radius, we extend CLPT to the coarse-grained dust model and consider two different smoothing approaches operating in Eulerian and Lagrangian space, respectively. The coarse-graining in Eulerian space features modified fluid dynamics different from dust while the coarse-graining in Lagrangian space is performed in the initial conditions with subsequent single streaming dust dynamics, implemented by smoothing the initial power spectrum in the spirit of the truncated Zel'dovich approximation. Finally, we compare the predictions of the different coarse-grained models for the streaming model ingredients to N-body measurements and comment on the proper choice of both the tracer distribution function and the smoothing scale. We study the effect of coarse-graining the dynamics of a pressureless selfgravitating fluid (coarse-grained dust) in the context of cosmological perturbation theory, both in the Eulerian und Lagrangian framework. We obtain recursion relations for the Eulerian perturbation kernels of the coarse-grained dust model by relating them to those of the standard pressureless fluid model. The effect of the coarse-graining is illustrated by means of power and cross spectra for density and velocity that are computed up to 1-loop order. In particular, the large scale vorticity power spectrum that arises naturally from a mass-weighted velocity is derived from first principles. We find qualitatively good agreement of the magnitude, shape and spectral index of the vorticity power spectrum with recent measurements from N-body simulations and results from the effective field theory of large scale structure. We investigate large-scale structure formation of collisionless dark matter in the phase space description based on the Vlasov equation whose nonlinearity is induced solely by gravitational interaction according to the Poisson equation. Determining the time-evolution of density and peculiar velocity demands solving the full Vlasov hierarchy for the moments of the phase space distribution function. In the presence of long-range interaction no consistent truncation of the hierarchy is known apart from the pressure- less fluid (dust) model which is incapable of describing virialization due to the occurrence of shell-crossing singularities and the inability to generate vorticity and higher cumulants like velocity dispersion. Our goal is to find a simple ansatz for the phase space distribution function that approximates the full Vlasov distribution function without pathologies in a controlled way and therefore can serve as theoretical N-body double and as a replacement for the dust model. We argue that the coarse-grained Wigner probability distribution obtained from a wave function fulfilling the Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation (SPE) is the sought-after function. We show that its evolution equation approximates the Vlasov equation and therefore also the dust equations before shell-crossing, but cures the shell-crossing singularities and is able to describe regions of multi-streaming and virialization. This feature was already employed in simulations by Widrow & Kaiser (1993). The coarse-grained Wigner ansatz allows to calculate all higher moments from density and velocity analytically, thereby incorporating nonzero higher cumulants in a self-consistent manner. We investigate the relation between the standard Newtonian equations for a pressureless fluid (dust) and the Einstein equations in a double expansion in small scales and small metric perturbations. We find that parts of the Einstein equations can be rewritten as a closed system of two coupled differential equations for the scalar and transverse vector metric perturbations in Poisson gauge. It is then shown that this system is equivalent to the Newtonian system of continuity and Euler equations. Brustein and Riotto (2011) conjectured the equivalence of these systems in the special case where vector perturbations were neglected. We show that this approach does not lead to the Euler equation but to a physically different one with large deviations already in the 1-loop power spectrum. We show that it is also possible to consistently set to zero the vector perturbations which strongly constrains the allowed initial conditions, in particular excluding Gaussian ones such that inclusion of vector perturbations is inevitable in the cosmological context.
