In this paper, we mainly focus on the magnetic and magnetocaloric features of La2-xDyxNiMnO6 double perovskites. Their magnetocaloric properties are investigated in terms of both entropy and adiabatic temperature changes. In contrast to early works, it was found that the Dy2NiMnO6 compound unveils dominant antiferromagnetic interactions under very low magnetic fields. The ordering of its Dy3+ magnetic moments is associated with a giant magnetocaloric effect at very low temperatures, while the established ferromagnetic Ni-O-Mn super-exchange interactions close to 100 K give rise to a moderate magnetocaloric level, only. On the other hand, the doping of Dy2NiMnO6 with high amounts of large-size rare earth elements such as La would enable us to cover an unusually wide magnetocaloric temperature range going from the liquid helium temperature up to room-temperature. More interestingly, the presence of both ordered and disordered ferromagnetic phases in La1.5Dy0.5NiMnO6 maintains constant the isothermal entropy changes over a temperature span of about 200 K, being a favorable situation from a practical point of view., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Physics: D, 2019

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is one of the most widely used experimental techniques to study the electronic and spatial structure of materials. Fluorescence yield mode is bulk-sensitive, but has several serious problems coming from saturation effects. In this study, we show the usefulness of partial fluorescence yields in addressing these problems. We discuss the different behaviors of La2NiMnO6 and LiMnO2 at the Mn 2p absorption edges. The total fluorescence yield produces misleading spectra for LiMnO2 due to the absence of high-Z (Z: atomic number) elements. We conclude that the measurement of the inverse partial fluorescence yield is essential in studies of LiMnO2, which is a hotly debated Li-ion battery material., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Ultrasonic velocity measurements on the magnetoelectric multiferroic compound CuFeO2 reveal that the antiferromagnetic transition observed at TN1 = 14 K might be induced by an R-3m -> C2/m pseudoproper ferroelastic transition (G. Quirion, M. J. Tagore, M. L. Plumer, O. A. Petrenko, Phys. Rev. B 77, 094111 (2008)). In that case, the group theory states that the order parameter associated with the structural transition must belong to a two dimensional irreducible representation Eg (x^2 - y^2, xy). Since this type of transition can be driven by a Raman Eg mode, we performed Raman scattering measurements on CuFeO2 between 5 K and 290 K. Considering that the isostructural multiferroic compound CuCrO2 might show similar structural deformations at the antiferromagnetic transition TN1 = 24.3 K, Raman measurements have also been performed for comparison. At ambient temperature, the Raman modes in CuFeO2 are observed at omega_Eg = 352 cm^-1 and omega_Ag = 692 cm^-1, while these modes are detected at omega_E_g = 457 cm^-1 and omega_Ag = 709 cm^-1 in CuCrO2. The analysis of the temperature dependence of modes shows that the frequency of all modes increases down to 5 K. This typical behavior can be attributed to anharmonic phonon-phonon interactions. These results clearly indicate that none of the Raman active modes observed in CuFeO2 and CuCrO2 drive the pseudoproper ferroelastic transition observed at the N\'eel temperature TN1. Finally, a broad band at about 550 cm^-1 observed in the magnetoelectric phase of CuCrO2 below TN2 could be attributed to a magnon mode., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The temperature dependence of phonon excitations and the presence of spin phonon coupling in polycrystalline Pr2NiMnO6 samples were studied using micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Magnetic properties show a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition at 228 K and a saturation magnetization close to 4.95 \muB/f.u.. Three distinct Raman modes at 657, 642, and 511 cm-1 are observed. The phonon excitations show a clear hardening due to anharmonicity from 300 K down to 10 K. Further, temperature dependence of the 657 cm-1 mode shows only a small softening. This reflects the presence of a relatively weak spin-phonon coupling in Pr2NiMnO6 contrary to other double perovskites previously studied., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figs

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figs

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Despite the great technological and scientific importance, a well-controlled coupled behavior in magnetoelectric multiferroic materials at room temperature remains challenging. We demonstrate that the self-ordered A2BBO6 (e.g., A = La, B = Mn, and B = Ni) double perovskites provide a unique alternative opportunity to control and/or to induce such behavior in oxides. In this paper, we outline and discuss the various challenges and bottleneck issues related to this class of materials using La2NiMnO6 as a prototype. Details of the synthesis strategies, using pulsed laser deposition as a central tool, to obtain a meticulous control over cation ordering is illustrated. The possible impact of Ni/Mn cation ordering on the magnetic ground states, ferromagnetic transition temperature, phonon behavior, and spin-phonon coupling are presented. Our results are also compared with the current literature on related compounds., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We report the influence of Ni/Mn ordering on the spin-phonon coupling in multifunctional La2NiMnO6. Three types of films with different levels of structural order, including long-range Ni/Mn cation order, cation disorder, and an admixture of the ordered and disordered phases, are compared by polarized micro-Raman spectroscopy and magnetometry. Each film displays a strong dependence on the polarization configuration and a unique set of Raman active phonon excitations. Long-range cation ordering results in the splitting of Raman active phonon peaks because of Brillouin zone folding and lowering symmetry. Phonon mode softening begins clearly at a distinct temperature for each sample revealing a strong spin-lattice interaction. It follows closely the magnetization curve in ordered films. Unlike the admixture and the ordered films, softening behavior is strongly suppressed in the cation-disordered films. These differences may be understood based on the variation in amplitude of the spin-spin correlation functions due to the local Ni/Mn cation ordering., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figs

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appearance of these additional phonon excitations is interpreted as the clearest signature of Brillouin zone folding as a result of the long-range Ni/Mn ordering in La2NiMnO6. Both ordered and disordered materials display a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition. The ordered films display also a saturation magnetization close to 4.8 mB/f.u. and a transition temperature (FM-TC) around 270 K, while the disordered ones have only a 3.7 mB/f.u. saturation magnetization and a FM-TC around 138 K. The differences in their magnetic behaviours are understood based on the distinct local electronic configurations of their Ni/Mn cations., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figs

Millimeter size single crystals of double perovskite La2NiMnO6 (LNMO) were grown by the High Temperature Solution Growth Method. The magnetic measurements and polarized Raman spectra between 5 and 350K provide evidence that the crystals have high degree of Ni(2+)/Mn(4+)ordering, small amount of lattice defects and highest Tc = 288K reported so far for ferromagnetic double perovskites. At a microscopic level the crystals are heavily twinned and the effect of twinning on the Raman spectra is analyzed in detail., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Double perovskites provide a unique opportunity to induce and control multiferroic behaviors in oxide systems. The appealing possibility to design materials with a strong coupling between the magnetization and the polarization fields may be achieved in this family since these magnetic insulators can present structural self-ordering in the appropriate growth conditions. We have studied the functional properties of La2CoMnO6 and Bi2CoMnO6 epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Cation-ordered La2CoMnO6 films display a magnetic Curie temperature of 250 K while cation-disordered Bi2CoMnO6 films present ferromagnetism up to ~ 800 K. Such high transition temperature for magnetic ordering can be further tuned by varying the strain in the films indicating an important contribution from the structural characteristics of the materials. Our approach might be generalized for other oxide systems. At this end, our results are compared with other multiferroic systems. The roles of various cations, their arrangements and structural effects are further discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figs

Ferromagnetic La3NiAlMnO9 (LNAMO) and La3CoAlMnO9 (LCAMO) triple-perovskite thin films are stabilized in the 750-860 oC temperature range in 100 to 900 mTorr O2 pressure range using pulsed-laser deposition. The LCAMO and LNAMO films exhibit ferromagnetism up to 190 K and 130 K respectively. The structural, optical and magnetic properties of these films demonstrate that the B-site 3d-cations, Al, Mn and Co or Ni ions, are structurally short-range ordered. The strong spin-lattice-polarization coupling in LCAMO is evidenced by the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the softening of the phonon frequencies starting in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition mimicking the behaviours of La2CoMnO6 double perovskite., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figs

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The phase diagram of the organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$Cl has been investigated by ultrasonic velocity measurements under helium gas pressure. Different phase transitions were identified trough several elastic anomalies characterized from isobaric and isothermal sweeps. Our data reveal two crossover lines that end on the critical point terminating the first-order Mott transition line. When the critical point is approached along these lines, we observe a dramatic softening of the velocity which is consistent with a diverging compressibility of the electronic degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
In an ultrasonic experiment, we have investigated the temperature profile of the velocity of longitudinal elastic waves propagating along a direction perpendicular to the layers in the organic superconductors kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2X, X = Cu(SCN)_2 and Cu[N(CN)_2]Br. Although a small decrease of the velocity is observed at the superconducting transition, the most anomalous behavior is obtained in the normal metallic state where an important softening is identified around 40-50 K. In order to characterize the origin of this anomaly, we have studied its behavior under the application of hydrostatic pressure. The observed behavior is found to mimic those of the transport and magnetic properties of these materials which have been attributed to the magnetic fluctuations. Following the example of one-dimensional insulating systems where coupling between longitudinal acoustic waves and magnetic fluctuations is known to occur, our results suggest that the pseudo-gap regime of these two-dimensional organic superconductors is dominated by a similar mechanism., Comment: 4 pages including 4 figures

- Abstract
Background Clinicians routinely use impressions of speech as an element of mental status examination. In schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, descriptions of speech are used to assess the severity of psychotic symptoms. In the current study, we assessed the diagnostic value of acoustic speech parameters in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, as well as its value in recognizing positive and negative symptoms. Methods Speech was obtained from 142 patients with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and 142 matched controls during a semi-structured interview on neutral topics. Patients were categorized as having predominantly positive or negative symptoms using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Acoustic parameters were extracted with OpenSMILE, employing the extended Geneva Acoustic Minimalistic Parameter Set, which includes standardized analyses of pitch (F0), speech quality and pauses. Speech parameters were fed into a random forest algorithm with leave-ten-out cross-validation to assess their value for a schizophrenia-spectrum diagnosis, and PANSS subtype recognition. Results The machine-learning speech classifier attained an accuracy of 86.2% in classifying patients with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and controls on speech parameters alone. Patients with predominantly positive v. negative symptoms could be classified with an accuracy of 74.2%. Conclusions Our results show that automatically extracted speech parameters can be used to accurately classify patients with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and healthy controls, as well as differentiate between patients with predominantly positive v. negatives symptoms. Thus, the field of speech technology has provided a standardized, powerful tool that has high potential for clinical applications in diagnosis and differentiation, given its ease of comparison and replication across samples.

- Abstract
Introduction: The CD4 cell count and percent at initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) are measures of advanced HIV disease and thus are important indicators of programme performance for children living with HIV. In particular, World Health Organization (WHO) 2017 guidelines on advanced HIV disease noted that >80% of children aged <5 years started cART with WHO Stage 3 or 4 disease or severe immune suppression. We compared temporal trends in CD4 measures at cART start in children from low-, middle- and high-income countries, and examined the effect of WHO treatment initiation guidelines on reducing the proportion of children initiating cART with advanced disease. Methods: We included children aged <16 years from the International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (IeDEA) Collaboration (Caribbean, Central and South America, Asia-Pacific, and West, Central, East and Southern Africa), the Collaboration of Observational HIV Epidemiological Research in Europe (COHERE), the North American Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study (PHACS) and International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) 219C study. Severe immunodeficiency was defined using WHO guidelines. We used generalized weighted additive mixed effect models to analyse temporal trends in CD4 measurements and piecewise regression to examine the impact of 2006 and 2010 WHO cART initiation guidelines. Results: We included 52,153 children from fourteen low-, eight lower middle-, five upper middle- and five high-income countries. From 2004 to 2013, the estimated percentage of children starting cART with severe immunodeficiency declined from 70% to 42% (low-income), 67% to 64% (lower middle-income) and 61% to 43% (upper middle-income countries). In high-income countries, severe immunodeficiency at cART initiation declined from 45% (1996) to 14% (2012). There were annual decreases in the percentage of children with severe immuno

- Abstract
Bone strength is determined by its dense cortical shell, generated by unknown mechanisms. Here we use the Dmp1Cre:Socs3f/f mouse, with delayed cortical bone consolidation, to characterise cortical maturation and identify control signals. We show that cortical maturation requires a reduction in cortical porosity, and a transition from low to high density bone, which continues even after cortical shape is established. Both processes were delayed in Dmp1Cre:Socs3f/f mice. SOCS3 (suppressor of cytokine signalling 3) inhibits signalling by leptin, G-CSF, and IL-6 family cytokines (gp130). In Dmp1Cre:Socs3f/f bone, STAT3 phosphorylation was prolonged in response to gp130-signalling cytokines, but not G-CSF or leptin. Deletion of gp130 in Dmp1Cre:Socs3f/f mice suppressed STAT3 phosphorylation in osteocytes and osteoclastic resorption within cortical bone, leading to rescue of the corticalisation defect, and restoration of compromised bone strength. We conclude that cortical bone development includes both pore closure and accumulation of high density bone, and that these processes require suppression of gp130-STAT3 signalling in osteocytes.

Introduction: The CD4 cell count and percent at initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) are measures of advanced HIV disease and thus are important indicators of programme performance for children living with HIV. In particular, World Health Organization (WHO) 2017 guidelines on advanced HIV disease noted that >80% of children aged 40% of children in low- and middle-income countries started cART with severe immunodeficiency compared to

Purpose: Antiretroviral monotherapy and treatment interruption are potential strategies for perinatally HIV-infected adolescents (PHIVA) who face challenges maintaining effective combination antiretroviral therapy (ART). We assessed the use and outcomes for adolescents receiving monotherapy or undergoing treatment interruption in a regional Asian cohort. Methods: Regional Asian data (2001-2016) were analyzed to describe PHIVA who experienced >= 2 weeks of lamivudine or emtricitabine monotherapy or treatment interruption and trends in CD4 count and HIV viral load during and after episodes. Survival analyses were used for World Health Organization (WHO) stage III/IV clinical and immunologic event-free survival during monotherapy or treatment interruption, and a Poisson regression to determine factors associated with monotherapy or treatment interruption. Results: Of 3,448 PHIVA, 84 (2.4%) experienced 94 monotherapy episodes, and 147 (4.3%) experienced 174 treatment interruptions. Monotherapy was associated with older age, HIV RNA >400 copies/mL, younger age at ART initiation, and exposure to >= 2 combination ART regimens. Treatment interruption was associated with CD4 count = 1,000 copies/mL, ART adverse event, and commencing ART age >= 10 years compared with age

Background: Virologic failure is a major threat to maintaining effective combination antiretroviral therapy, especially for children in need of lifelong treatment. With efforts to expand access to HIV viral load testing, our understanding of pediatric virologic failure is evolving. Setting: An Asian cohort in 16 pediatric HIV services across 6 countries. Methods: From 2005 to 2014, patients younger than 20 years who achieved virologic suppression and had subsequent viral load testing were included. Early virologic failure was defined as a HIV RNA >= 1000 copies per milliliter within 12 months of virologic suppression, and late virologic as a HIV RNA >= 1000 copies per milliliter after 12 months following virologic suppression. Characteristics at combination antiretroviral therapy initiation and virologic suppression were described, and a competing risk time-to-event analysis was used to determine cumulative incidence of virologic failure and factors at virologic suppression associated with early and late virologic failure. Results: Of 1105 included in the analysis, 182 (17.9%) experienced virologic failure. The median age at virologic suppression was 6.9 years, and the median time to virologic failure was 24.6 months after virologic suppression. The incidence rate for a first virologic failure event was 3.3 per 100 person-years. Factors at virologic suppression associated with late virologic failure included older age, mostly rural clinic setting, tuberculosis, protease inhibitor-based regimens, and early virologic failure. No risk factors were identified for early virologic failure. Conclusions: Around 1 in 5 experienced virologic failure in our cohort after achieving virologic suppression. Targeted interventions to manage complex treatment scenarios, including adolescents, tuberculosis coinfection, and those with poor virologic control are required.

Background: Perinatally HIV-infected adolescents (PHIVA) are an expanding population vulnerable to loss to follow-up (LTFU). Understanding the epidemiology and factors for LTFU is complicated by varying LTFU definitions. Setting: Asian regional cohort incorporating 16 pediatric HIV services across 6 countries. Methods: Data from PHIVA (aged 10-19 years) who received combination antiretroviral therapy 2007-2016 were used to analyze LTFU through (1) an International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) method that determined LTFU as >90 days late for an estimated next scheduled appointment without returning to care and (2) the absence of patient-level data for >365 days before the last data transfer from clinic sites. Descriptive analyses and competing-risk survival and regression analyses were used to evaluate LTFU epidemiology and associated factors when analyzed using each method. Results: Of 3509 included PHIVA, 275 (7.8%) met IeDEA and 149 (4.3%) met 365-day absence LTFU criteria. Cumulative incidence of LTFU was 19.9% and 11.8% using IeDEA and 365-day absence criteria, respectively. Risk factors for LTFU across both criteria included the following: age at combination antiretroviral therapy initiation = 5 years, rural clinic settings compared with urban clinic settings, and high viral loads compared with undetectable viral loads. Age 10-14 years compared with age 15-19 years was another risk factor identified using 365-day absence criteria but not IeDEA LTFU criteria. Conclusions: Between 12% and 20% of PHIVA were determined LTFU with treatment fatigue and rural treatment settings consistent risk factors. Better tracking of adolescents is required to provide a definitive understanding of LTFU and optimize evidence-based models of care.

BABAR, the detector for the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e+e- B Factory operating at the upsilon 4S resonance, was designed to allow comprehensive studies of CP-violation in B-meson decays. Charged particle tracks are measured in a multi-layer silicon vertex tracker surrounded by a cylindrical wire drift chamber. Electromagentic showers from electrons and photons are detected in an array of CsI crystals located just inside the solenoidal coil of a superconducting magnet. Muons and neutral hadrons are identified by arrays of resistive plate chambers inserted into gaps in the steel flux return of the magnet. Charged hadrons are identified by dE/dx measurements in the tracking detectors and in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector surrounding the drift chamber. The trigger, data acquisition and data-monitoring systems, VME- and network-based, are controlled by custom-designed online software. Details of the layout and performance of the detector components and their associated electronics and software are presented., 118 pages, 94 figure files, to be published in Nucl. Inst. and Methods

It is acknowledged that knowledge management (KM) brings several benefits for an organization, and two types of knowledge management strategies exist: Codification and personalization, and a gap exisits between both strategies. In this paper, the context of KM is placed on the campus of higher education. A knowledge capturing tool, in the form of a tablet based APP, is introduced to capture problem solving knowledge during a student project meeting. This tool intends to propose a new way of technology support to codify knowledge during socialization. A series of comparative experiments were undertaken to investigate the APP's influence on users' meeting experiences. This paper will present results based on interviews with the participants, which showed both positive and negative effects of the APP usage on their meeting experience.

In this article, we propose a rectangular hollow core Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) sensor for high detection of women’s reproductive hormones (progesterone and estradiol) in the blood sample at THz regime (0.8 THz to 1.7 THz). The numerical sensing performances are evaluated by the full vector finite element method (FVFEM). We have achieved improved relative sensitivity with minimal loss for sensing progesterone concentrations and estradiol concentrations by optimizing structural parameters. The obtained maximum relative sensitivity is 99.87% for 10 n mol/L (progesterone) and 99.88% for 3 n mol/L (Estradiol) at 1.35 THz. Further, we have obtained low effective material loss (EML) and a large effective mode area. The primary takeaway from this research is that it’s critical to monitor estradiol and progesterone levels in order to ensure that a woman’s reproductive system is functioning in a balanced manner and in general health systems. Also, this biosensor can be fabricated by current fabrication technologies. Moreover, the prediction carried out with the help of Locally Weighted Linear Regression, and hyperparameter tuning, we can conclude that for weighting hyperparameter value of 0.02. We have achieved the maximum prediction accuracy with the unity R2 score and this model can be employed for the prediction of relative sensitivity for various parameters.

With the increase of high-power electrical components in modern ships, especially fully electric ships with electric propulsion drive (EPD), the cooling of EPD electrical components has become particularly important. Providing optimal configurations for heat sinks with high thermal efficiency plays an essential role in this regard. A new technique for improving the efficiency of heat sinks is the utilization of perforated fins. This study examined the effects of perforation geometry (shape and size) on laminar airflow flow and heat transfer characteristics over a perforated plate-fin heat sink. Three-dimensional simulations were conducted using the finite-volume scheme based on the SIMPLE algorithm. In this research, the effects of perforation shape and size on various parameters, e.g., total drag force, average Nusselt number, perforated fin efficiency (PFE), heat transfer performance enhancement (HTPE), and fin optimization factor (η) were evaluated. The results confirmed that at a specific heat transfer surface area for perforated fins, the highest efficiency is achieved by circular perforations. In contrast, the square perforations due to geometric similarity to rectangular fins could reach the maximum size. Consequently, fins with square perforations could achieve the most optimal configuration. Also, results showed that for a constant perforations size, change in perforations shape improves HTPE, PFE, and η by more than 40%, 45%, and 110%, respectively. Also, by modifying perforations size for a specified shape, an increment of more than 35%, 40%, and 150% is observed in HTPE, PFE, and η, respectively.

- Abstract
TERESA is a socially intelligent semi-autonomous telepresence system that is currently being developed as part of an FP7-STREP project funded by the European Union. The ultimate goal of the project is to deploy this system in an elderly day centre to allow elderly people to participate in social events even when they are unable to travel to the centre. In this paper, we present an overview of our progress on TERESA. We discuss the most significant scientific and technical challenges including: understanding and automati-cally recognizing social behaviour; defining social norms for the interaction between a telepresence robot and its users; navigating the environment while taking into account social features and constraints; and learning to estimate the social impact of the robot’s actions from multiple sources of feedback. We report on our current progress on each of these chal-lenges, as well as our plans for future work.

We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23 million Upsilon(4S)-->B-anti-B decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events where one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta=0.34 +/- 0.20 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst)., 9 pages, 2 postscript figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Introduction. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most frequent cause of early onset neonatal sepsis. The objective of the study was to assess antibiotic resistance of GBS in pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation in South Vietnam. Materials and methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between April 2018 and May 2019 in Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Can Tho Maternity Hospital (Vietnam) to determine the incidence of GBS infection. Anorectal and vaginal samples were taken from 203 pregnant women attending an antenatal examination at 35-37 weeks of gestation. Specimens showing a positive result for GBS were evaluated to identify antibiotic resistance using the Kirby-Bauer test. Results. The positive GBS rate in pregnant women was 16.3%. The rate of antibiotic resistance in the GBS-positive samples analysed was as follows: Vancomycin (resistant 18.2%, sensitive 81.8%), Cefazolin (resistant 30.3%, sensitive 69.7%), Erythromycin (resistant 24.2%, intermediate 9.1%, sensitive 63.7%), Clindamycin (resistant 63.7%, intermediate 3% and sensitive 33.3%), and Ampicillin (resistant 87.9%, sensitive 12.1%). In Vietnam, antibiotic prophylaxis for infection prevention in pregnant women with positive GBS includes Cefazolin and Vancomycin. Conclusions. Pregnant women should be tested for GBS infection, ideally between weeks 35 and 37 of pregnancy. During labour, antibiotics such as Cefazolin and Vancomycin are most effective for preventing infections.

Nowadays, carbon–based materials like graphene and its derivatives consume great nano-technological applications worldwide. Graphene, due to its attractive properties such as its unusual charge transport, mechanical and thermal capabilities, is in the nano-scaling research spotlight. Additionally, to overcome the scaling limitations of large-scale charge-storage-based memories, the Memristor is focused upon as a nonvolatile memory. In the present work, the modeling of a Memristor based on graphene oxide as an active layer is considered. The drift-diffusion formalism as an electron transport mechanism, derived from ion immigration, is explored. It is concluded that by increasing the voltage between two metalelectrodes, the carrier concentration is increased, and the carrier mobility on the sandwiched layer (graphene oxide) is decreased. The conductive path by the redox of graphene oxide (GO) atoms, due to the conversion of sp3 to sp2 oxygen functionalities, is formed, which can be modeled by degenerate mode (the low resistance switching or ON state). This path is ruptured by decreasing the voltage into the reset voltage, which is modeled by the non-degenerate mode (the high resistance switching or OFF state). Finally, the model in comparison with the experimental data numerically is simulated, and acceptable results for metal and graphene–like path formation are observed.

Abstract This paper reports about the outcomes from an investigation carried out on tunable biosensor for detection using infrared in the range of 1.5 µm and 1.65 µm. The biosensor is made of phase change material formed by different alloy combinations, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST). The nature of GST allows for the material to change phase with changes in temperature, giving the tunable sensing property for biosensing application. Sensor built with amorphous GST (aGST) and crystalline GST (cGST) in different design structures were tested on different concentrations of biomolecules: hemoglobin (10 g/l, 20 g/l, 30 g/l and 40 g/l); and urine (0–1.5 mg/dL, 2.5 mg/dL, 5 mg/dL and 10 mg/dL). The tunable response observed from the tests demonstrates the potential application of the materials in the design of switching and sensing systems.

Laughter is a highly variable signal, which can be caused by a spectrum of emotions. This makes the automatic detection of laughter a challenging, but interesting task. We perform automatic laughter detection using audio-visual data from the AMI Meeting Corpus. Audio-visual laughter detection is performed by fusing the results of separate audio and video classifiers on the decision level. This results in laughter detection with a significantly higher AUC-ROC than single-modality classification. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract Background Conformational transitions are implicated in the biological function of many proteins. Structural changes in proteins can be described approximately as the relative movement of rigid domains against each other. Despite previous efforts, there is a need to develop new domain segmentation algorithms that are capable of analysing the entire structure database efficiently and do not require the choice of protein-dependent tuning parameters such as the number of rigid domains. Results We develop a graph-based method for detecting rigid domains in proteins. Structural information from multiple conformational states is represented by a graph whose nodes correspond to amino acids. Graph clustering algorithms allow us to reduce the graph and run the Viterbi algorithm on the associated line graph to obtain a segmentation of the input structures into rigid domains. In contrast to many alternative methods, our approach does not require knowledge about the number of rigid domains. Moreover, we identified default values for the algorithmic parameters that are suitable for a large number of conformational ensembles. We test our algorithm on examples from the DynDom database and illustrate our method on various challenging systems whose structural transitions have been studied extensively. Conclusions The results strongly suggest that our graph-based algorithm forms a novel framework to characterize structural transitions in proteins via detecting their rigid domains. This paper presents a low-profile circularly polarized (CP) antenna with wideband and polarization-reconfigurable characteristics. The proposed antenna consists of a truncated-corner patch working as a CP source and a non-uniform metasurface (MS) acting as parasitic elements for performance enhancement. The non-uniform MS is utilized to produce additional operating bands in the higher frequency range, which are then combined with the lower band produced by the driven patch to significantly broaden the overall operating bandwidth. The polarization switching mechanism is based on the ON/OFF states of two p-i-n diodes. The fabricated prototype shows the measured overlapped bandwidth between −10 dB impedance and 3-dB axial ratio is 25.6% and peak broadside gain is 7.3 dBic.

A flexible transparent wideband four-element MIMO antenna with a connected ground plane is proposed with numerical computation and experimental measurement studies. The optical transparency is obtained using flexible conductive oxide material AgHT-4 and Melinex substrate. The radiating elements are in the form of circular stub-loaded C-shaped resonators, which are positioned in a carefully structured flexible Melinex substrate with an interconnected partial ground plane structured in the form of an L-shaped resonator, attaining an overall antenna size of $0.33\lambda \times 0.48\lambda $ at the lowest operating frequency. The proposed antenna spans over a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 2.21–6 GHz (92.32%) with an isolation level greater than 15dB among all elements. The maximum gain is 0.53dBi with a minimum efficiency of 41%, respectively which is satisfactory considering flexible structure and sheet impedance of $4\Omega $ /sq. MIMO antenna parameters in terms of the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) and diversity gain (DG) are also extracted where all the values are satisfactory for MIMO applications. The bending analysis of the proposed transparent MIMO antenna along the X and Y axis has revealed good performance in terms of scattering parameters and radiation pattern along with MIMO diversity performance. All of these technical points make the flexible MIMO antenna suitable for smart devices using sub-6 GHz 5G and WLAN band in IoT applications where visual clutter and co-site location issues need to be mitigated with the integration ease of conformal placement on the curved component/device surfaces.
