Background: Dermatoglyphics can be utilised in clinical settings to identify those who are more likely to have impacted teeth. Additionally, dermatoglyphics looks to have potential as a non-invasive diagnostic method for predicting the presence or absence of an impacted tooth. The goal of this study was to look at the most common dermatoglyphic pattern in people who had or didn't have an impacted mandibular third molar teeth and see if there was a dermatoglyphic signature. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 180 participants was conducted (90 cases and 90 controls). The rolling impression technique was used to apply blue duplicating ink to participants' fingertips, which was then recorded. There was an increase in the frequency of the whorl-plain pattern in the right-hand ring finger (60%; p=0.028) and left-hand little finger (33.3%; p=0.009), as well as the loop-ulnar pattern in the right-hand middle finger (74.4%; p=0.024) in individuals with a predisposition to the presence of impacted teeth. Results: The left-hand little finger was found to be the most predictive for impaction in a forward stepwise binary logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: Dermatoglyphics could be used as a non-invasive sign to predict whether or not a tooth is affected. The approximity of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) to the roots of lower third molars (M3) is a risk factor for the occurrence of nerve damage and subsequent sensory disturbances of the lower lip and chin following the removal of third molars. To assess this risk, the identification of M3 and IAN on dental panoramic radiographs (OPG) is mandatory. In this study, we developed and validated an automated approach, based on deep-learning, to detect and segment the M3 and IAN on OPGs. As a reference, M3s and IAN were segmented manually on 81 OPGs. A deep-learning approach based on U-net was applied on the reference data to train the convolutional neural network (CNN) in the detection and segmentation of the M3 and IAN. Subsequently, the trained U-net was applied onto the original OPGs to detect and segment both structures. Dice-coefficients were calculated to quantify the degree of similarity between the manually and automatically segmented M3s and IAN. The mean dice-coefficients for M3s and IAN were 0.947 ± 0.033 and 0.847 ± 0.099, respectively. Deep-learning is an encouraging approach to segment anatomical structures and later on in clinical decision making, though further enhancement of the algorithm is advised to improve the accuracy.

Background: An impacted tooth is one of the most commonly occurring dental anomalies, although some types of impaction (i.e. inverted angulation) may be considered rare finding. There are many hypotheses regarding impaction aetiology. One of the most popular hypotheses suggested that this condition may result from insufficient space in retromolar space, other: improper angulation of tooth bud, malposition of the tooth germ or hereditary factors, insufficient interproximal attrition, ectopy or dysfunction of genes necessary for proper tooth eruption. This study aims to present the odontological and paleopathological assessment of the impacted molars observed within the skull excavated from an early modern cemetery in Wroclaw., Materials and Methods: The skull used in the study was complete and in a good state of preservation. It belonged to an adult individual whose body was buried at the former Salvator Cemetery (currently Czysty Square). The individual's dentition was almost completely lost antemortem. Only second molars preserved within the maxillae (bilaterally) and the mandible was almost edentulous as well. The morphometric traits have been taken according to standards established by R. Martin. Macroscopic observations were supported by X-rays and computed tomography imaging., Results: The age at death was estimated at 20-35 years. Comparison of the metric characteristics of skull with the reference material reveals that it is much smaller than the average female skull from this series. Morphometric indices calculated for both splanchocranium and neurocranium allow defining the skull and jaw as short, which could be an important factor involved in the teeth impaction., Conclusions: Atypical impaction of the third molars could result from small size of skull and could have significantly deteriorated the quality of life of the individual.

Aim: The aim of this study is to discuss a case of an 11-year-old pediatric patient, who was diagnosed with delayed eruption of the permanent maxillary central incisors because of palatally impacted supernumerary teeth., Background: The delayed eruption of permanent teeth can be a result of blocking by supernumerary teeth and over-retained primary teeth. Early diagnosis can help in avoiding the complications. The management of such cases depends on the stage of teeth development, teeth position, and space availability. Treatment may combine both surgical and orthodontic interventions., Case Description: The case was managed by surgically removing the primary retained teeth and supernumerary teeth in two visits then allowing the impacted permanent incisors to erupt without any intervention., Conclusion: After 18 months follow-up, the two permanent incisors erupted spontaneously with no orthodontic intervention., Clinical Significance: dentists should be aware of the importance of early diagnosis of supernumerary teeth. The management of such cases should be designed by a multidisciplinary team decision.

Background: The aetiology of the canine displacement still remains controversial. Some authors implicated a deficiency in maxillary width as a local mechanical cause for impacted canines. The aim of the study was to examine whether there is a relationship between impacted maxillary canines, early diagnosed by using panoramic radiographs, and the morphology of the maxilla on 3D model casts., Methods: The displaced maxillary canines (DMC) group consisted of 24 patients (mean age, 9.1 ± 1.1 years), while the control group consisted of 25 subjects (mean age, 8.7 ± 0.9 years). Seven measurements were calculated on the digital casts of each subject: intermolar width (IMW), arch length (AL), depth of the palatal vault (PVD), available arch space (AAS), the sum of the anterior segments (SAS), the right/affected (R-Af) and left/unaffected (L-Un) available spaces., Results: Both IMW and AL in the DMC group were significantly decreased relative to the control group (P < 0.01), indicating that patients with displaced canines presented a shorter and narrower palate than subjects without eruption problems. Moreover, the values of the SAS and AAS were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) in the DMC group relative to the controls., Conclusions: The shape of the maxillary arch was narrower and shorter in the displaced maxillary canines group compared with the control group.

Teeth in excess number than the normal count are called supernumerary teeth. They can be either unilateral or bilateral and single or multiple, found at any place in the dental arch, but most commonly found in the anterior maxillary region. Supernumerary teeth are commonly associated with syndromes when present in more numbers, but can be idiopathic. The present study shows a case report of a 16-year-old female patient who reported with overretained deciduous teeth. A panoramic radiograph showed multiple impacted supernumerary teeth. Based on clinical features and radiographic examination, a diagnosis of idiopathic hyperdontia was given. In such types of patients, management must be planned by a multidisciplinary approach.

While impaction of a tooth or two in dentoalveolar region is common, ectopic presence of them in non-dentate area is less commonly reported. A 45-year-old female reported to the department with pain on right back teeth region since two days. On examination, grossly decayed 46, root stump 47, missing 48, with poor periodontal status were noted. Panoramic radiograph was advised for screening, which revealed an inverted impacted 48 at the right ramus just below subcondylar region. However, it was an incidental finding and the patient was asymptomatic, she was informed about the pros and the cons of her case and kept under close monitoring.

A tooth normally erupts when half to three-quarters of its final root length has developed. Tooth impaction is usually diagnosed well after this period and is generally asymptomatic. It is principally for this reason that patients seek treatment later than optimal. Tooth impaction is a common problem in daily orthodontic practice and, in most cases, it is recognized by chance in a routine dental examination. Therefore, it is very important that dental practitioners are aware of this condition, since early detection and intervention may help to prevent many harmful complications. The treatment of impacted teeth requires multidisciplinary cooperation between orthodontists, oral surgeons and sometimes periodontists. Orthodontic treatment and surgical exposure of impacted teeth are performed in order to bring the impacted tooth into the line of the arch. The treatment is long, more complicated and challenging. This article presents an overview of the prevalence, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and complications associated with the management of impacted teeth.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the pattern of third molar impaction and associated symptoms in a Central Anatolian Turkish population., Material and Methods: A total of 2,133 impacted third molar teeth of 705 panoramic radiographs were reviewed. The positions of impacted third molar teeth on the panoramic radiographs were documented according to the classifications of Pell and Gregory and of Winter. The presence of related symptoms including pain, pericoronitis, lymphadenopathy and trismus was noted for every patient. Distributions of obtained values were compared using the Pearson χ2 test. Nonparametric values were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test., Results: The mean age of the subjects was 30.58 ± 11.98 years (range: 19-73); in a review of the 2,133 impacted third molar teeth, the most common angulation of impaction in both maxillaries was vertical (1,177; 55%). Level B impaction was the most common in the maxilla (425/1,037; 39%), while level C impaction was the most common in the mandible (635/1,096; 61%). Pain (272/705; 39%) and pericoronitis (188/705; 27%) were found to be the most common complications of impaction. Among 705 patients (335 males, 370 females), pericoronitis was more prevalent in males (101; 30%) and usually related to lower third molars (236; 22%). The retromolar space was significantly smaller in females (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a significant difference in retromolar space for the area of jaw (maxillary: 11.3 mm; mandibular: 14.2 mm) and impaction level (A: 14.7 mm; B: 11.1 mm; C: 10.3 mm; p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The pattern of third molar impaction in a Central Anatolian Turkish population was characterized by a high prevalence rate of level C impaction with vertical position. An audit was undertaken in 2009 to determine the success of the new national orthodontic referral protocol introduced to the Health Service Executive (HSE) in 2007 and operated in the Dublin Mid-Leinster HSE region. It was repeated in 2011 to determine if the HSE austerity measures have had a bearing on the orthodontic service performance in the Dublin Mid-Leinster HSE region. The audit also measured the success of referring practitioners in identifying the correct Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) classification of the patient. In the 2011 audit, the figures were broken down to identify the occlusal variables that caused dental practitioners most difficulties in identification. The audit demonstrates a good referral to assessment timeframe in 2009 (85-80% compliance for IOTN 5 and 4 within three to six months, respectively), which deteriorates significantly in 2011 (26-4% for IOTN 5 and 4 within three to six months, respectively). The ability of dentists to identify the correct IOTN classification was better in 2009 (60% correct) compared to 2011 (51% correct), but both figures fell below the audit standard of 75% of referrals with correct IOTN classifications. The IOTN occlusal dental health components most readily identified by referring practitioners and meeting audit standards were 5a (overjet >9mm), 5i (impacted teeth) and 5h (extensive hypodontia). The remaining occlusal dental health components in the HSE IOTN fell below the audit standard. The audit clearly identifies a requirement for a continued educational effort to maintain the HSE IOTN skill base in primary care, and a need for additional resources to manage the demand for orthodontic assessments.

Background/aim: It is considered that the shortage of space is the major cause of the third molar impaction. The aim of this study was to establish the frequency of insufficient lower third molar eruption space in Serbian population, to question the differences in this frequency in the subjects of different age, to determine the influence of the lower third molar space (retromolar space) size on third molar eruption, and to investigate a possible correlation between the size of gonial angle and the space/third molar width ratio., Methods: Digital orthopantomograms were taken from 93 patients divided into two groups: early adult (16-18 years of age) and adult (18-26) patients. Retromolar space, mesiodistal third molar crown width, gonial angle and eruption levels were measured., Results: The space/third molar width in early adult subjects was smaller (p < 0.0001) and insufficient space was significantly more frequent (p = 0.0003) than in adult patients. Considerably more third molars erupted in case of enough space in both age groups (p < 0.0001). There was no difference between the means of gonial angle size in relations to the available space., Conclusions: The retromolar space/third molar width ratio is more favorable in adult subjects. Gonial angle is not in correlation with the retromolar space/third molar width ratio.

Most typical dentigerous cysts are commonly seen in association with third molars and maxillary canines. Only 5-6% of dentigerous cysts are associated with supernumerary teeth. We report a rare case of dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary tooth. The patient was treated surgically by enucleation of the cyst.

The Frequency with which impacted supernumerary teeth are encountered in a clinical setting is relatively high, with the majority of such cases occurrig in the median maxillary region, and very few in the molar region. In the molar region, mandibular distomolars (fourth molars) are very rare. Although a small number of case reports have described impacted supernumerary distomolars, very few have compared third molars and distomolars. Herein, the authors report two cases involving mandibular distomolars and one case a maxillary distomolar. In each of these cases, the third molar and distomolar were extracted and a macroscopic morphological analysis conducted. The results were then compared with those of the latest available literature.

The ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare, benign, mixed neoplasm composed of proliferating odontogenic epithelium, ectomesenchymal tissue and varying degrees of dental hard tissue formation. It occurs exclusively as an intraosseous lesion. It usually exhibits slow growth and is commonly seen in children and young adults. Radiologically, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma appears as a circumscribed radiolucency which may contain radiopaque foci. Most cases of ameloblastic fibro-odontoma exhibit benign behaviour, but cases of malignant transformation have been reported. The treatment modality in most cases involves conservative surgery, but in cases with malignant transformation more radical treatment will be required. A massive ameloblastic fibro-odontoma involving the mandible is being described here with its clinical, radiological and histopathological features.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to project hospitalisation rates for the surgical removal of impacted teeth across Australia, based on Western Australian statistics., Methods: Population data were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and were divided across Australia by statistical local area and related to a validated socioeconomic index. Every episode of discharge from all hospitals in Western Australia for the financial years 1999/2000 to 2008/2009 indicating an impacted/embedded tooth removal as the principle oral condition, as classified by the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10AM), was included in the study. Hospitalisation data were obtained from the Western Australian Hospital Morbidity Data System. Variables of age, place of residence and health insurance status were utilised for projecting the Western Australian rates across Australia., Results: The results of the study showed a definite rural-urban divide and the estimated age-adjusted rates were almost three times greater in the higher socioeconomic areas when compared to their poorer counterparts. The costs of the procedure were estimated to be approximately $60 million per annum across Australia., Conclusion: The findings of this study can be used to inform health policy to guide proper allocation of resources and target services for the benefit of the community especially those residing in rural and remote areas in a vast country like Australia.

Odontomas are considered to be the most common odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity. Some authors consider it as malformations rather than true neoplasms. The exact etiology of odontomes is still not known. Most odontomes are asymptomatic and are discovered during routine radiographic investigations. Odontomes generally cause disturbances in the eruption of the teeth, most commonly delayed eruption or deflection. The present report describes the surgical management of a case of compound odontoma in a 10-year-old boy who presented with a complaint of swelling in the maxillary right anterior region and retained deciduous incisors. The related literature is also being reviewed in this article.

Spreading odontogenic infections are a common source of hospital admissions to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) units. This report describes an unusual reaction to routine treatment for a spreading odontogenic infection in a healthy male with no known allergies, requiring the patient to be managed supportively in the resuscitation room. The patient deteriorated rapidly after the administration of paracetamol, intravenous fluids, steroids and antibiotics, demonstrating delusional behaviour, fever, rigors, tachycardia and hypoxia. Fever associated with sepsis can lead to confusional states, but similar symptoms have been described in the literature as a reaction to antibiotic therapy known as Jarisch-Herxheimer (J-H) reaction. This is potentially the first time a J-H like reaction has been described in the context of dental sepsis. The authors feel that the OMFS team should be aware of possible sequelae of medical therapy in patients with acute dental sepsis and be confident in their management of these complications.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon, benign and slow growing odontogenic tumor, which is usually located in an anterior region of the maxilla without pain. Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a relatively rare benign tumor of the jaw. Here we present 2 lesions presenting in unusual forms, follicular variant of AOT in the mandible and COF associated with impacted canine in the mandible, occurring concomitantly in the same patient. Both lesions presented classic histopathologic features.

We present a case of a 36-year-old female with a benign fibro-osseous lesion consistent with cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) that was located coronally to the crown of an impacted mandibular third molar tooth and was associated with a complex odontoma. The pathogenesis of this unusual association is discussed and the odontogenic origin of COD is suggested.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign epithelial mixed odontogenic tumor. It occurs as an intraosseous lesion, generally asymptomatic and more prevalent in children and adolescent. AFO is found on radiographic evaluation of patients with unerupted or impacted teeth in many cases. Histological examination reveals a fibrous soft tissue, islands of odontogenic epithelium and a disordered mixture of dental tissues. The treatment modality in most cases involves conservative surgery with enucleation. We present a case of 13-year-old boy with a missing right central incisor, mimicking-like odontoma on radiograph but proved to be AFO and treated with enucleation with preservation of impacted tooth. There was no recurrence after one year of follow-up. This report discusses the clinical, radiographical, histological features and surgical assessment to preserve the impacted tooth associated with AFO.

Odontomas are usually associated with permanent teeth and rarely with primary dentition. The consequences of their presence are several clinical complications. Presented here is a case where diagnosis and management of an odontome causing impaction of primary tooth is discussed thus emphasising need for alertness in a clinician using the aid of radiological examination for early detection and subsequent intervention.

Delayed eruption of maxillary permanent central incisors in a child poses a distressing esthetic quandary to parents, by virtue of its location in the dental architecture. Well-aligned anterior teeth add confidence to smile and have enhanced self-esteem, which is critical even in early life. Impaction of the maxillary central incisors compared to third molars or the canines is less reported; bilateral supplemental maxillary central incisors related to impacted permanent maxillary central incisors are rare and one of the supplemental central incisors showing unusual talon is still infrequent. A case of impacted maxillary permanent central incisors related to supplemental maxillary central incisors, with one of them showing an unusual talon cusp, is presented.

Unlabelled: To obtain high quality in orthodontics; it is important to evaluate the treatment. There are many indices for evaluation of treatment outcome however all of them compare treatment outcome with ideal occlusion. Therefore Stockholm Eastman Index of Treatment Outcome (SEITO) was invented. This index relates the treatment outcome to the treatment goal. SEITO is a morphological index based on criteria from the records including study casts, and/or intra oral photos., Method: The outcome of treatment is related to the treatment goal as stated in the records. Pre-treatment goals are divided into subgroups; overjet, vertical relation anterior/lateral), anterior cross bite, transverse relations, impacted teeth and space crowding/ spacing. Each subgroup is scored; the points are 0, 1, 3 or 5 depending on the severity of the malocclusion. The points for each subgroup are added to give a total sum of treatment goal points. Each post-treatment subgroup above is evaluated. If the treatment goal is fulfilled, the treatment outcome points are equal to the treatment goal points. If not - there is a reduction in the outcome points. Finally the outcome points are expressed as a percentage of the treatment goal points and form a measure of the success of treatment., Conclusion: SEITO index is a simple and quick way to obtain a picture of the quality of treatment outcome, and the only orthodontic index that relates the treatment outcome to the treatment goal.

Introduction. Hyperdontia is an odontostomatologic anomaly characterized by an excess in tooth number. It seems to occur more often in patients with hereditary factors concerning this anomaly: this case represents a rare form of hyperdontia, with bilateral multiple supernumerary teeth, with evident penetrance of the phenotype in the family unit engaged in the present study. The karyotype determination excludes a pathogenesis on chromosomal basis.Case report. A 30 years old patient came to our observation with five impacted teeth (1.8, 2.8, 3.8, 4.7 and 4.8), as well as with the presence of an impacted supernumerary tooth (distomolar 4.9). The patient was suggested to allow us to perform a radiologic screening to his two sisters aged 17 and 13 years.The X-ray photography showed that the elder sister had nine impacted teeth; these were 1.8 - 1.9 - 2.8 - 2.9 - 2.10 - 3.8 - 3.9 - 4.8 - 4.9; while the youngest sister had four impacted teeth, that is 1.8 - 1.9 - 2.8 - 2.9.Conclusions. The value of the present case report can be used as a paradigm for the assessment of the hereditary factors predisposing the onset of hyperdontia, and for the consequent management by oral surgeon of family units in which the odontostomatologic anomaly was detected without any syndromic forms.

The aim of this study was to assess the severity of any underlying malocclusion in subjects presenting for treatment of a palatally impacted canine (PIC) using a modification of the Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Treatment Need (MIOTN), which does not factor in the impacted canine. The pre-treatment study models of 54 subjects who had previously undergone surgical exposure of a PIC, followed by fixed appliance orthodontic alignment, were scored independently by two examiners on two occasions using the MIOTN system. Unweighted kappa statistics revealed good intraoperator agreement for the two examiners and a moderate level of interexaminer agreement. Forty-six and 41 per cent of the sample still scored either an MIOTN grade 4 or 5 (i.e. a great or very great need of orthodontic treatment). However, 20 and 25 per cent of the subjects were graded with a MIOTN score of 1 or 2, indicating little or no need for treatment when the PIC was not taken into consideration. This finding emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of an impacted canine and the need to institute interceptive measures where necessary, as up to 25 per cent of patients might otherwise require no other orthodontic treatment.

Objective: To evaluate treatment outcome in patients with second molar impaction and retention., Materials and Methods: A total of 135 second molars, 65 in the maxilla and 70 in the mandible were collected from 87 patients (45 girls and 42 boys) with a mean age of 15 years (range: 11- 19 years). Available patient records, x-rays, study casts, and photos were studied. The mean follow-up period was 22 months (range: 4-106 months)., Results: A total of 166 second molars were diagnosed as impacted, 24 as primary and 5 as secondarily retained; 80% of the second molars were orthodontically or surgically treated. In more than half of the treated patients the second molars failed to erupt into a proper position. Surgical exposure of the retained or impacted second molar was the treatment found most successful (71%). The least successful treatment (11%) used the third molar to replace the second molar after the second molar was extracted. No clear difference in treatment outcome could be detected between the impacted and the primary or secondary retained teeth. However, a clear difference was found between the impacted and the primary retained second molars regarding treatment strategy: 9% of the impacted and 67% of the primary retained teeth were left untreated. Dental crowding was found in 70% of the patients., Conclusion: In more than half of the treated patients the second molars failed to erupt into a proper position. The most common treatment given (extraction of the second molar) was the least successful.

Aim: The aim of this report is to present a clinical case of impaction of a maxillary left central incisor in a mixed dentition caused by the presence of an odontoma as well as a review of the pertinent dental literature., Background: Knowledge of the normal tooth eruption patterns is essential for the identification and appropriate treatment of deviations in eruption that may endanger physiologic development. A delay in time between the exfoliation of a deciduous tooth and the eruption of its permanent successor may be related to a disorder known as dental retention. This occurs when tooth eruption does not occur within a normal time frame, the tooth is not present in the dental arch, and there is no potential for eruption due to the presence of a completely formed root or when the homologous tooth has been erupted for at least six months with complete root formation., Report: A 10-year-old boy in the mixed dentition stage presented with an impacted maxillary left central incisor due to the presence of an odontoma. Treatment included the surgical removal of the lesion and the follow up of the spontaneous eruption while a partial fixed appliance was used to recover the space of the missing tooth. Since spontaneous eruption failed to occur within the expected time frame, surgical exposition of the crown and bonding of an orthodontic appliance for traction was done to facilitate eruption., Summary: The incisor was integrated to the dental arch without any root or periodontal sequelae. The treatment was considered a success, since both health and aesthetics of the smile were recovered. The importance of the clinical and radiographic diagnosis of the retention of a permanent tooth associated with a pathological entity should be emphasized. The participation of a multidisciplinary team to accomplish the appropriate treatment of such patients is extremely relevant because of the esthetic and functional ramifications of a missing anterior tooth as well as the psychological well-being of the individual.

Cleidocranial dysplasias is an autosomal dominant disorder that presents with skeletal dysplasia. The dental manifestations are mainly delayed exfoliation of primary teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth, with multiple impacted supernumeraries. This report addresses the complex nature of the treatment modalities. In our patient, surgical exposure of unerupted teeth was done with orthodontic traction. Post-surgical follow-up was uneventful.

Supernumerary teeth are a relatively frequent disorder of odontogenesis characterized by an excess number of teeth. Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth found in the premaxilla between the two central incisors. They can be supplemental (resembling natural teeth), conical, tuberculate or molariform. We present the case of a 19 year-old girl who presented with a mesiodens of an unusual morphology and multiple impacted supernumerary teeth not associated with any syndrome.

Impaction of first permanent molars is an uncommon condition and few cases are reported in the literature. Two cases of a mandibular and a maxillary impacted first permanent molar are presented, their aetiology and treatment alternatives are discussed.

Binkley and Johnson first reported this syndrome in 1951. But it was in 1960, Gorlin-Goltz established the association of basal cell epithelioma, jaw cyst and bifid ribs, a combination which is now frequently known as Gorlin-Goltz syndrome as well as Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS). NBCCS is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with high penetrance and variable expressivity. NBCCS is characterized by variety of cutaneous, dental, osseous, opthalmic, neurologic and sexual abnormalities. One such case of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is reported here with good illustrations.

The aim of this study was to identify a model of cephalometric variables for early diagnosis of the displacement of upper permanent canine and early prognosis of upper canine impaction. Postero-anterior (PA) cephalograms of 43 subjects (22 males and 21 females) with different types of malocclusions in the mixed dentition were analyzed at the time of first observation (mean age 8 years and 5 +/- 9 months). All subjects were reevaluated at the mean age of 14.3 years. At this time the sample was divided into 2 groups according to the presence of canine impaction: nonimpacted canine group (31 subjects) and impacted canine group (12 subjects). Stepwise variable selection on the measurements at the time of first observation identified 2 predictive variables on PA cephalograms, ie, the distance between the center of the canine crown and the midsagittal plane (A3cc to Cg Vertical) and the distance between the jugal process and the midsagittal plane (J to Cg Vertical). The closer the canine crowns to the midsagittal plane and the larger the posterior portion of the hemimaxilla, the higher the probability of canine impaction. Discriminant analysis assigned a classification power of 95.3% to the predictive model. On the basis of the equation generated by the multivariate statistical method, impaction of the maxillary canine for each new case at the age of 8 years can be predicted. The importance of PA cephalograms in the diagnosis and prediction of canine eruption disturbances is emphasized.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon tumor of odontogenic origin, characterized histologically by the formation of ductlike structures with amyloid-like deposits. Histogenesis of AOT is still uncertain and it is often considered as a hamartomatous lesion rather than a true neoplasm. AOT has a benign behavior and conservative surgical enucleation or curettage is sufficient. We report a case of AOT in a 15-year-old female who presented with left-sided jaw swelling with tooth resorption. Histopathology revealed intraosseus follicular variant of AOT. A brief review of literature is also discussed.

Herein we present five cases of submasseteric abscess that most commonly occurred in patients with a history dental disease. CT has been the main imaging method for diagnosing lesions in the masticator space and adjacent to the mandible; however, we found that, in some of our cases, CT defined the lesion poorly or not at all. In some cases, MR imaging defined the lesion better. Radiologic manifestations of this condition and pathologic correlations are discussed.

In orthodontic practice occurred problems associated with labio-palatal localization of impacted permanent maxillary canines. Not always is possible to determinate labio-palatal location of these teeth on the basis of palpation, therefore clinical examination aided by radiographic investigation. Orthopantomogram is the most widely used radiograph in orthodontics. The purpose of present study-test diagnostic value of palpation and orthopantomography in cases of maxillary canines impaction on the basis of evaluation of migration and inclination of impacted teeth. Thirty nine patients of Clinic of Orthodontics, Kaunas University of Medicine, orthopantomograms were available for analysis. Forty two impacted canines were investigated. Only 64% of canines could be palpated. It depended on the vertical position of the tooth. Distribution of the values of canine inclination to the middle of upper jaw was too big for more precise statistical analysis. Canines, which were medial to the 3th horizontal sector (these canines overlapped longitudinal axis of the lateral incisor), were located palatally.

As impacted permanent maxillary cuspids occur in 1-2% of the population, the general dentist should know the signs and symptoms of this condition and the interceptive treatment. Features of buccal or palatal cuspid impaction include lack of canine bulges in the buccal sulcus indicating a lingual eruption path and possible impaction; lack of symmetry between the exfoliation and eruption of cuspids that may indicate palatal or lingual impaction; and abnormal mesiodistal location and angulation of the developing maxillary permanent cuspids on radiographs. Diagnosis of impacted cuspid teeth at age 8-10 years can significantly reduce serious ramifications, including surgical exposure and orthodontic alignment as well as root resorption of the lateral incisors. In specific cases, extraction of the primary maxillary cuspids can prevent impaction of the permanent maxillary cuspids and additional sequelae.

Gardner syndrome is a type of hereditary gastrointestinal polyposis. Dental professionals should be aware that this syndrome can present as multiple impacted teeth and sometimes as large osteomas in the head and neck area. Following a brief review of literature, we present two cases of Gardner syndrome. One of these cases was diagnosed after a dental examination. The high incidence of malignant transformation of polyps into colorectal cancer indicates the importance of early diagnosis and follow-up.

The incidence of retention/impaction of the permanent lower second molar (M2inf) lies between 0.6/1000 and 3/1000. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the craniofacial morphology, the frequency of dental anomalies and the inclination of the affected M2inf and the adjacent first molar in patients with arrested eruption of M2inf. The overall goal was to elucidate the aetiology of arrested tooth eruption and to present the characteristics of these patients in order to improve diagnosis and treatment planning. Radiographic material (profile radiographs and orthopantomograms) from 19 patients (nine females and 10 males; 13-19 years of age at the time of referral) were analysed. The ages of the patients when profile radiographs were taken for cephalometric analysis varied from 8 to 16 years. The study shows that this group of patients, compared with a reference group, had an increased sagittal jaw relationship (Class II). Specifically, the mandibular prognathism was less, the mandibular gonial angle smaller, the mandibular alveolar prognathism enlarged and the maxillary incisor inclination less than in the reference group. Furthermore, this group of patients had a more frequent occurrence of morphological tooth anomalies, such as root deflections, invaginations, and taurodontism. However, none of the patients with arrested eruption of M2inf had agenesis of the lower third molar. The study did not reveal an association between the degree of inclination of the M2inf and that of the first molar in the same region. The results of this investigation show that conditions such as the craniofacial morphology and deviations in the dentition are associated with arrested eruption of M2inf. Therefore, it is important to evaluate these conditions in future diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with arrested eruption of M2inf.

This paper draws attention to problems of assessment and interpretation of frequencies of the retention/displacement of teeth (impacted teeth and germ impaction), presents diagnostic criteria, comments on the incidence and frequency of retention/displacement and other disturbances in recent probands, lists the order in which teeth are affected, and discusses the causes of these disturbances. Reasons for the existing lack of anthropological data on the subject are suggested, and the potential usefulness of representative surveys of large samples of prehistoric populations is stressed.
