Abstract

Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) and Centaurs are remnants of our planetary system formation, and their physical properties have invaluable information for evolutionary theories. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method for studying these small bodies and has presented exciting results. These observations can provide precise profiles of the involved body, allowing an accurate determination of its size and shape. The goal is to show that even single-chord detections of TNOs allow us to measure their milliarcsecond astrometric positions in the reference frame of the Gaia second data release (DR2). Accurated ephemerides can then be generated, allowing predictions of stellar occultations with much higher reliability. We analyzed data from stellar occultations to obtain astrometric positions of the involved bodies. The events published before the Gaia era were updated so that the Gaia DR2 catalog is the reference. Previously determined sizes were used to calculate the position of the object center and its corresponding error with respect to the detected chord and the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS) propagated Gaia DR2 star position. We derive 37 precise astrometric positions for 19 TNOs and 4 Centaurs. Twenty-one of these events are presented here for the first time. Although about 68\% of our results are based on single-chord detection, most have intrinsic precision at the submilliarcsecond level. Lower limits on the diameter and shape constraints for a few bodies are also presented as valuable byproducts. Using the Gaia DR2 catalog, we show that even a single detection of a stellar occultation allows improving the object ephemeris significantly, which in turn enables predicting a future stellar occultation with high accuracy. Observational campaigns can be efficiently organized with this help, and may provide a full physical characterization of the involved object., Comment: 16 pages, 28 figures. Abstract

We present results derived from four stellar occultations by the plutino object (208996) 2003~AZ$_{84}$, detected at January 8, 2011 (single-chord event), February 3, 2012 (multi-chord), December 2, 2013 (single-chord) and November 15, 2014 (multi-chord). Our observations rule out an oblate spheroid solution for 2003~AZ$_{84}$'s shape. Instead, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, we find that a Jacobi triaxial solution with semi axes $(470 \pm 20) \times (383 \pm 10) \times (245 \pm 8)$~km % axis ratios $b/a= 0.82 \pm 0.05$ and $c/a= 0.52 \pm 0.02$, can better account for all our occultation observations. Combining these dimensions with the rotation period of the body (6.75~h) and the amplitude of its rotation light curve, we derive a density $\rho=0.87 \pm 0.01$~g~cm$^{-3}$ a geometric albedo $p_V= 0.097 \pm 0.009$. A grazing chord observed during the 2014 occultation reveals a topographic feature along 2003~AZ$_{84}$'s limb, that can be interpreted as an abrupt chasm of width $\sim 23$~km and depth $> 8$~km or a smooth depression of width $\sim 80$~km and depth $\sim 13$~km (or an intermediate feature between those two extremes).

To date, no data are available concerning long-term changes in respiratory system impedance measured by FOT. Additionally, although exacerbations have been reported to be associated with excessive lung function decline in COPD, the impact of exacerbations on the results of FOT has not been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal changes in respiratory system impedance and the influence of exacerbations thereon. Methods: Between March 2011 and March 2012, outpatients who attended Kobe City Medical Center West Hospital with a diagnosis of COPD were assessed for eligibility. Baseline patient characteristics (age, sex, body mass index, smoking history, current smoking status, COPD stage), lung function (post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1]), blood tests (neutrophils and eosinophils), FOT, and COPD assessment test results were collected at enrollment. Lung function and FOT were examined every 6 months until March 2016. Annual changes in FEV1 and FOT parameters were obtained from the slope of the linear regression curve. The patients were divided into 2 groups based on exacerbation history. Results: Fifty-one of 58 patients with COPD were enrolled in this study. The median follow-up period was 57 (52–59) months. Twenty-five (49%) patients experienced exacerbations. A significant annual decline in FEV1 and respiratory system impedance were shown. Additionally, annual changes in FEV1, respiratory system resistance at 5 Hz, respiratory system reactance at 5 Hz, and resonant frequency were greater in patients with exacerbations than in those without exacerbations. Conclusion: Exacerbations of COPD lead not only to a decline in lung function but also to an increase in respiratory system impedance. 5. Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of The Minor Salivary Glands: Report of Two Cases with Literature Review

Abstract

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor, which is especially uncommon in the minor salivary glands (MSG). We report literature review of EMC of the MSGs with our experience of two cases. Case 1 is a 75-year-old woman with a hard elastic mass in the hard palate, sized 2.5 × 2 cm without ulceration. Incisional biopsy was suggestive of pleomorphic adenoma. Tumor resection was performed with adequate surgical margin. Case 2 is a 44-year-old woman with a mass in the hard palate, sized 1.8 × 1.6 cm without ulceration. Incisional biopsy was suggestive of pleomorphic adenoma or a low-grade salivary gland carcinoma and intraoral tumor resection was performed. Both have good postoperative courses and are alive with no evidence of local recurrence or metastasis at 25 and 10 months. The Ki-67 labeling index in Case 1 and 2 were 10.6 and 3.8 %. Considering that the anatomy, structure, and size of salivary glands are quite different from MSGs, EMCs of the MSG cannot be predicted similarly to EMCs of the major salivary glands. The present review with 18 cases revealed no consensus on treatment methods for MSG cases other than surgery.

Abstract

We conducted an international study of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) diagnosis among a large group of physicians and compared their diagnostic performance to a panel of IPF experts. A total of 1141 respiratory physicians and 34 IPF experts participated. Participants evaluated 60 cases of interstitial lung disease (ILD) without interdisciplinary consultation. Diagnostic agreement was measured using the weighted kappa coefficient (κw). Prognostic discrimination between IPF and other ILDs was used to validate diagnostic accuracy for first-choice diagnoses of IPF and were compared using the C-index. A total of 404 physicians completed the study. Agreement for IPF diagnosis was higher among expert physicians (κw=0.65, IQR 0.53–0.72, p20 years of experience (C-index=0.72, IQR 0.0–0.73, p=0.229) and non-university hospital physicians with more than 20 years of experience, attending weekly MDT meetings (C-index=0.72, IQR 0.70–0.72, p=0.052), did not differ significantly (p=0.229 and p=0.052 respectively) from the expert panel (C-index=0.74 IQR 0.72–0.75). Experienced respiratory physicians at university-based institutions diagnose IPF with similar prognostic accuracy to IPF experts. Abstract

Computations find that o-phenylene(halo)carbenonitrenes 2-XN, X = F, Cl, Br, have quinoidal singlet biradical ground states such as the parent o-phenylenecarbenonitrene (2-HN). Compared to the parent 2-HN, halogen substitution stabilizes the A″ states relative to the A′ ones. Halogen substitution also affects the barrier and exothermicity of the ring-opening reaction (to form unsaturated nitriles 4-XN, X = F, Cl, Br), but it has a smaller effect on the ring-closing reaction (to form benzo(aza) cyclobutadiene 3-XN, X = F, Cl, Br). Attempts to generate and observe the o-phenylene(halo)carbenonitrenes 2-XN, X = F, Cl, Br, using matrix isolation spectroscopy under conditions similar to those of the successful observation of 2-HN failed. Instead, the observed photoproducts were a mixture of 3-XN and 4-XN. In each case, the major product of the mixture appears to be the thermodynamically more stable one. In the case of X = Br, the observed mixture contains an additional component that is postulated to be Z-6-BrN. o-Phenylenechlorocarbenocarbene is also computed to have a quinoidal singlet biradical ground state and relatively stabilized A″ excited states. Attempts to generate the biscarbene under matrix isolation conditions led to the detection of benzochlorocyclobutadiene (3-ClC), small amounts of the ring-open product (dienediyne 4-ClC), and cycloalkyne 5-ClC. Computations suggest that the formation of 5-ClC implies the generation of Z-6-ClC, which is analogous to the formation of Z-6-BrN from 2-BrN. © 2005 American Chemical Society. 70 19 7744 7754 Cited By :9

Abstract

m-Phenylene-coupled carbenonitrenes [(3-nitrenophenyl)methylene (2-H), (3-nitrenophenyl)fluoromethylene (2-F), (3-nitrenophenyl)chloromethylene (2-Cl), (3-nitrenophenyl)bromomethylene (2-Br)] have been investigated computationally (with B3LYP, MCSCF, CASPT2, ROMP2, and QCISD(T) methods) and experimentally (with IR, U]V, and ESR spectroscopy). For each species, five electronic states were considered. At the highest level of theory explored, the parent compound (2-H) has a quintet ground state, but its halogen derivatives (2-X, X = F, Cl, and Br) have triplet ground states. A linear relationship between the Q-T energy gap of 2-X and the T-S gap of the corresponding phenylcarbenes 8-X is found, which can be helpful in rationalizing and predicting ground-state multiplicities in m-phenylene-linked carbenonitrenes and similar species. Precursors for the photochemical generation of 2-X (X = H, F, Cl, and Br) were synthesized and photolyzed in matrixes (Ar, triacetin) at low temperatures. IR (Ar, 13 K) and ESR (triacetin, 77 K) data are compatible with the generation of triplet halocarbenonitrenes 2-X, (X = F, Cl, and Br). Abstract

Ab initio and density functional theory calculations predict that benzocyclobutenylidene (1) has a singlet ground state in contrast to the parent phenylcarbene and many other simply substituted arylcarbenes. Calculations also predict that 1 should lie in a relatively deep potential well, while its triplet state is 14.5 kcal mol-1 higher in energy. Abstract

A series of para-conjugatively coupled phenylenecarbenonitrenes {(4-nitrenophenyl)methylene (3a), (4-nitrenophenyl)fluoromethylene (3b), (4-nitrenophenyl)chloromethylene (3c), and (4-nitrenophenyl)bromomethylene (3d)} were generated in argon matrix at low temperature (10 or 13 K) and characterized by IR and UV/vis spectroscopy. Density functional theory (B3LYP/6-31G(d)) and ab initio (MCSCF, CASPT2) methods were used to study the ground- and some low-lying excited states of 3a-d. The experimental and computational data suggest that 3a-d have singlet ground states (S0) and can be thought of as quinonoidal biradicals. In all cases, the lowest triplet (T1) and quintet (Q1) states lie about 2 kcal mol-1 and 28-29 kcal mol-1, respectively, higher in energy than S0. On the other hand the substituent is found to have a significant effect on the relative energy of the second excited triplet (T2) state. This state tends to become relatively more stable as the ability of the substituent to enforce a closed-shell configuration at the carbene subunit increases. Interestingly, the energy difference between the T2 and S0 states in 3a-d is found to depend linearly on the S-T gap of the corresponding phenylcarbenes 7a-d. (Matrix Presented) UV-vis, FTIR, and ESR spectroscopic studies were carried out on samples of 1,4- and 1,5-naphthalenediazide that were photolyzed at cryogenic temperatures in argon and frozen solvent matrices. Abstract

IR spectra of α-cyano- o -fluorocinnamonitrile, its vinyl deuterated analogue and the corresponding photoproducts were recorded under Ar matrix isolation conditions (13K). An analysis of the IR spectra, assisted by calculations of the expected absorption signals from these structures, showed that the photoproducts were consistent with the previously assigned Hula-twist (HT) product, an unstable high energy conformer of the parent system. Abstract

The singlet and triplet states of cyclobutenylidene 1 and benzocyclobutenylidene 2 have been studied computationally (using ab initio and DFT methods) in order to assess the effect of angle strain on the S-T gap of vinyl- and phenylcarbenes. It is found that both carbenes have a singlet ground state. Cyclobutenylidene 1 has a more significant singlet-triplet gap (-25 kcal mol-1) than benzocyclobutenylidene 2 (-14.5 kcal mol-1). The strong preference of 1 for a singlet ground state may be understood if it is viewed as bicyclobut-1-ene with a considerably puckered ring. Singlet benzocyclobutenylidene (12) is computed to have also a puckered cyclobutene ring albeit less pronounced. The lowest isomerization path available for singlet cyclobutenylidene (11) is the formation of vinylacetylene, which is predicted to have a barrier of around 9 kcal mol-1. Our calculations suggest that singlet benzocyclobutenylidene (12) lies in a rather deep potential well and should be observable under suitable experimental conditions. However, under low-temperature Ar matrix conditions no evidence for the formation of carbene 2 was obtained from the photolysis of precursor 15. On the other hand, laser flash photolysis (LFP) of precursor 16 enables us to observe benzocyclobutenylidene at room temperature. The lifetime of carbene 12 is determined to be 0.6-0.7 μs in cyclohexane. The mCXY value for carbene 12 is determined to be 0.43, revealing a strong electrophilic nature and ranking 12 second among the electrophilic carbenes listed in the carbene philicity spectrum. 59 11 1070 1077 Cited By :4

Abstract

ortho-Phenylene-bisnitrene (2) and -carbenonitrene (3) were generated in an inert matrix at low temperature, characterized by IR spectroscopy, and identified with the help of DFT calculations. Their thermal and photochemical reactivity was examined in the matrix, and it was found that both 2 and 3 ring-open to 1,4-substituted butadienes. Calculations (DFT and MCSCF) on the lowest singlet, triplet, and quintet states of 2, 3, and the all-carbon analogue ortho-phenylene-biscarbene (4) are also reported. All three species are found to have singlet ground states. The S-T splitting is small (2-3 kcal mol-1), but the quintet states lie significantly higher in energy (20-25 kcal mol-1). The ring-opening reactions of 2-4 (to give 1,4-substituted butadienes) as well as the ring-closure reactions (to give benzocyclobutadiene derivatives) were also investigated computationally. The calculated barriers for the ring-opening reactions are in reasonable agreement with the experimentally obtained activation energies for 2 and 3. Abstract

The singlet and triplet states of cyclobutenylidene, cyclopenten-3- ylidene, cyclohexen,3-ylidene, and cyclohepten-3-ylidene and some of their isomers (cyclohexen-4-ylidene, cyclohepten-4-ylidene, and cyclohepten-5- ylidene) have been studied computationally (using ab initio and DFT methods) in order to assess the effect of angle strain on the S-T gap of small- and medium-size cyclic alkenylidenes. Ground-state intramolecular rearrangements of the conjugated cycloalkelnylidenes have also been examined with an emphasis on the smaller four-membered ring, which is compared to its higher homologues. It is found that cyclobutenylidene has a singlet ground state and a significant singlet-triplet gap (25 kcal mol-1). This strong preference for the singlet state may be understood ff cyclobutenylidene is also viewed as bicyclobut-1(2)-ene. As the size of the ring increases, the singlet state becomes destabilized with respect to the triplet. The break-even point occurs with the six-membered ring where the triplet and singlet states are close in energy. The barrier for the 1,2 hydrogen shift in cyclobutenylidene (50.5 kcal mol-1) is found to be much higher compared to its higher homologues and to other alkylcarbenes. The ring contraction to form methylenecyclopropene (1,2 carbon shift) is energetically more favorable, requiring 34.8 kcal mol-1. However, the lowest isomerization path available for singlet cyclobutenylidene is the formation of vinylacetylene, which is predicted to have a barrier of around 9 kcal mol-1.
