The purpose of this paper is to present descriptions of nurses and first female physcians in Serbia. I used different types of literary genres and applied methods of New Historcism, Literary Theory and Feminist Theories. The authors of these descriptions were women and men of different social status: princess/queen, nurse, actress, physician; police officer and a prison accountant. The princess Natalie Obrenović and the actress Milka Grgurova described the work of Serbian and Russian nurses in different places during the Serbo-Turkish War in 1876. Later in her memoir, Queen Natalie Obrenović wrote about a big humanitarian role of Belgrade women during the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The first Serbian police officer and one of the first Serbian female physicians described first female physicians in their diaries while Milutin A. Popović depicted compassionate nurses in the Album of female prisoners. These literary works have been keeping facts about important roles of Martha von Sabinin, a renowned Russian worker who in the past received many Serbian medals, but in the present has remained forgotten. Literature allows completer knowledge and a better understanding about the history of nurses and international bonds, but it also discovers counteractions. For example, Queen Natalie had a leadership role in organizing Belgrade women as nurses during the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. These facts were not mentioned in the memoirs by a Head of the Army Medical Corps, Vladan Đorđević. While male authors shortly described Serbian female medical doctors and nurses, female authors provided more details in self-documenting their role and the role of women from other countries, especially Martha von Sabinin. Some important similarities between diaries by Draga Ljočić and Marie Curie are found and presented. The author of the paper stressed the need of thinking across disciplinary perspectives and borders.

Introduction. Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is a rare, recessively inherited disorder caused by mutations in the pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2) gene on chromosome 20p13. The objective of this report is to present a patient with atypical PKAN with the novel heterozygous PANK2 mutation. Case outline. We present a 32-year-old female who had disease onset at the age 20 (depression, speech, chewing problems and backward falls) with progressive course. Neurological examination revealed hypomimia, risus sardonicus, dysphagia, tachylalia and severe dystonic dysarthria, moderate arms, legs, and jaw-opening dystonia, postural instability, urge incontinence, and decreased visual acuity. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed iron accumulation in the bilateral globus pallidus and putamen (“eye-of-the-tiger”), a radiological finding pathognomonic for PKAN. Genetic analysis revealed known mutation p.T528M (c.1583C>T) in exon 6, and novel p.Y405D (c.1213T>G) in exon 3 of the PANK2 gene. In silico analyses strongly suggested this mutation to be pathogenic. Conclusion. We report a patient with PKAN, and novel substitution p.Y405D (c.1213T>G) in PANK2 that has not been previously described in PKAN patients.

Eventhough the number of neurosience studies has grown from the late 20th century, the topic of fear in Serbian literature of the second half of the 19th century has rarely been separately researched. For this analisys, the author has chosen an unusual book in which, unlikely to Serbian novels of the time, fear was often described. It is the first book of the stories about Serbian female convicts of the 19th century The Album of the Women’s Ward of Prison in Požarevac with Statistics (1898) by Milutin A. Popović. Contrary to some Serbian, Swedish (1861) and American (1886) albuma of the time, Popović narrated crimes and sometimes wrote confessions derived directly from the female prisoners. The purpose of this paper is to analyse fear, conditioned by time and space, its vocal, facial and body expressions, as well as personal reactions. In this interdisciplanary research the author has integrated perspectives and methods from the Theory of Literature and Affective Narratology, Comparative Literature, History of Serbian Society and Literature, Psychology, Political Psychology, Philosophy and to some extent Linguistics (Cognitive Semantics). It is argued that the author's insistence on truth was the part of terrorethics, of causing fear and shock. It establishes the triumph of truth without beautifying, calling for sensibility, compassion and responsibility, in order to improve society. The results of the investigation show that in Album fear is presented as a complex emotion. It appears as an act of defense, but also as a form of manipulation. Fear is often connected to women and it turned to courage. The fear of death and the fear of a dead human body are the most frequently described fears. The author also described gender-specific fear of pregnancy, abortion, and rape. The Album breaks stereotypes of the past Serbian society and reveals different cases of women’s political resistance and sexual freedom. In the Album, fear is rarely vocally expressed, rather it manifests through different bodily symptoms, their intensity and spectrum. In describing one of the cruelest crimes, the author included humor as a mean of defense and fear control. Emotional geography reveals a paradox: a home is a place of terror and life threat, while a prison emerges as an area of joy and security. Moreover, the book describes two key generators of the politics of emotions. One is made by the systematic violence of a patriarcharchal society toward women, and the other one by inadequate institutions which ignore serious social problems. The language of fear, shock, horror, provocation and perversion and the aesthetics of the genre is interpreted as a part of the author's efforts for readers to feel terror of psycho-physiological mechanisms of pain, and to make new connections with the society and its culture. The creation of a complex and multimedia genre of the album is in accordance with the author's multuple efforts to deconstruct the layers of real life and its different dangers, calling for counteractions, and showing the tragic link between inhumane and unordered society.

The aim of this brief note is to present in summary form the role of Vukosava Milojević in creating the basis for scholarly research on Jovan Skerlić, one of the most important historians and literary critics of Serbian literature, and to emphasize the need for more detailed research on her scholarly work. After World War I, at the time when the importance of Skerlić's work started to fade, Vukosava Milojević published the first in-depth monograph about this historian, shedding light on his personality and intellectual development, while also presenting the positive and negative sides of his literary evaluations. The material presented here provides an outline of some problems in the approach to Serbian culture and academic work of the past. This paper is written with the aim of inspiring other scholars to devote their research to Vukosava Milojević, to her books on Skerlić and Laza K. Lazarević and to publicize her contributions to philopsophy, literature and academic writings in general.

So far there is not much research considering female sex as a risk factor for developing focal cervical dystonia and concomitant psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety. New research proposes ideas of CD baseline pathophysiology targeting neurobiological mechanisms of gamma aminobutyric acid GABAergic function underlying sexual dimorphism and psychiatric symptoms as an intrinsic factor of the disease itself. Our research examines the connection between motor and non-motor symptoms in female patients suffering from focal cervical dystonia and their response to treatment, citing the available literature and hypothesizing whether it can be linked to previously described alterations in GABA levels. The purpose of this study is to present the insufficiently known role of women translators in Serbian culture in the second half of the 19th century, a time when women's access to higher education changed the dynamics and politics of Serbian cultural production. The research is based upon statistical summaries of volume 20 of the Serbian bibliography: Books 1868-1944, and presents the most relevant facts about translators during the time 1868-1900. According to my knowledge, this is the first study of its kind. A complete bibliography of translated literary works is summarized by characteristics of translators such as education, vocation, ancestry, sex, volume, genre, etc. The paper examines the impact that translated works had on Serbian culture. The claim of historians of Serbian literature that translations from Russian dominated in that time is also examined. Sporadically collected information reveals the significant role of female teacher-translators who were educated at the Belgrade High School for Girls, whose headmistress (Katarina Milovuk) insisted that her students should learn foreign languagess. This cultural openness made a huge impact on the production of literature (for adults and children), scholarly and professional literature, and activism (antiwar, feminism). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
