We aim at characterizing the X-ray-to-optical/near-infrared broad-band emission of luminous QSOs in the first Gyr of cosmic evolution to understand whether they exhibit differences compared to the lower-\textit{z} QSO population. Our goal is also to provide for these objects a reliable and uniform catalog of SED fitting derivable properties such as bolometric and monochromatic luminosities, Eddington ratios, dust extinction, strength of the hot dust emission. We characterize the X-ray/UV emission of each QSO using average SEDs from luminous Type 1 sources and calculate bolometric and monochromatic luminosities. Finally we construct a mean SED extending from the X-rays to the NIR bands. We find that the UV-optical emission of these QSOs can be modelled with templates of $z\sim$2 luminous QSOs. We observe that the bolometric luminosities derived adopting some bolometric corrections at 3000 \AA\ ($BC_{3000\text{\AA}}$) largely used in the literature are slightly overestimated by 0.13 dex as they also include reprocessed IR emission. We estimate a revised value, i.e. $BC_{3000\text{\AA}}=3.3 $ which can be used for deriving $L_\text{bol}$ in \textit{z} $\geq$ 6 QSOs. A sub-sample of 11 QSOs is provided with rest-frame NIR photometry, showing a broad range of hot dust emission strength, with two sources exhibiting low levels of emission. Despite potential observational biases arising from non-uniform photometric coverage and selection biases, we produce a X-ray-to-NIR mean SED for QSOs at \textit{z} $\gtrsim$ 6, revealing a good match with templates of lower-redshift, luminous QSOs up to the UV-optical range, with a slightly enhanced contribution from hot dust in the NIR.

One of the main open questions in the field of luminous ($L_{\rm bol}>10^{47}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) quasars (QSOs) at $z \gtrsim 6$ is the rapid formation ($< 1\,$Gyr) of their supermassive black holes (SMBHs). For this work we analysed the relation between the X-ray properties and other properties describing the physics and growth of both the accretion disc and the SMBH in QSOs at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The sample consists of 21 $z>6$ QSOs, which includes 16 sources from the rapidly grown QSOs from the HYPERION sample and five other luminous QSOs with available high-quality archival X-ray data. We discovered a strong and statistically significant ($>3\sigma$) relation between the X-ray continuum photon index ($\Gamma$) and the $\rm C\,IV$ disc wind velocity ($v_{\rm C\,IV}$) in $z>6$ luminous QSOs, whereby the higher the $v_{\rm C\,IV}$, the steeper the $\Gamma$. This relation suggests a link between the disc-corona configuration and the kinematics of disc winds. Furthermore, we find evidence at $>2-3\sigma$ level that $\Gamma$ and $v_{\rm C\,IV}$ are correlated to the growth rate history of the SMBH. Although additional data are needed to confirm it, this result may suggest that, in luminous $z>6$ QSOs, the SMBH predominantly grows via fast accretion rather than via initial high seed BH mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report on the second observing program of the active galactic nucleus NGC 4151 with simultaneous Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE; {\sim}750 ks), NuSTAR ({\sim}60 ks), XMM-Newton ({\sim}75 ks), and NICER ({\sim}65 ks) pointings. NGC 4151 is the first Type 1 radio-quiet Seyfert galaxy with constrained polarization properties for the X-ray corona. Despite the lower flux state in which the source is re-observed and the resulting higher contribution of the constant reflection component in the IXPE energy band, our results are in agreement with the first detection. From polarimetric analysis, a polarization degree {\Pi} = 4.7 {\pm} 1.3 percent and angle {\Psi} = 77{\deg} {\pm} 8{\deg} east of north (68 percent confidence level) are derived in the 2.0 - 8.0 keV energy range. Combining the two observations leads to polarization properties that are more constrained than those of the individual detections, showing {\Pi} = 4.5 {\pm} 0.9 percent and {\Psi} = 81{\deg} {\pm} 6{\deg} (with detection significance {\sim}4.6{\sigma}). The observed polarization angle aligns very well with the radio emission in this source, supporting, together with the significant polarization degree, a slab or wedge geometry for the X-ray corona. However, a switch in the polarization angle at low energies (37{\deg} {\pm} 7{\deg} in the 2 - 3.5 keV bin) suggests the presence of another component. When it is included in the spectro-polarimetric fit, a high polarization degree disfavors an interpretation in terms of a leakage through the absorbers, rather pointing to scattering from some kind of mirror., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Our understanding of highly accreting AGNs is hampered by the lack of a complete systematic investigation in terms of their main spectral and variability properties, and by the relative paucity of them in the local Universe, especially those powered by supermassive black holes with $M_\mathrm{BH} > 10^8\,M_\odot$. To overcome this limitation, we present here the X-ray spectral analysis of a new, large sample of 61 highly accreting AGNs named as the \emph{XMM-Newton} High-Eddington Serendipitous AGN Sample, or X-HESS, obtained by cross-correlating the 11th release of the \emph{XMM-Newton} serendipitous catalogue and the catalogue of spectral properties of quasars from the SDSS DR14. The X-HESS AGNs are spread across wide intervals with a redshift of $0.06

Powerful supermassive black hole (SMBH) winds in the form of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) are detected in the X-ray spectra of several active galactic nuclei (AGN) seemingly independently of their radio classification between radio quiet (RQ) and radio loud (RL). In this work we explore the physical parameters of SMBH winds through a uniform analysis of a sample of X-ray bright RQ and RL AGN. We explored several correlations between different wind parameters and with respect to the AGN bolometric and Eddington luminosities. Our analysis shows that SMBH winds are not only a common trait of both AGN classes but also that they are most likely produced by the same physical mechanism. Consequently, we find that SMBH winds do not follow the radio-loudness dichotomy seen in jets. On average, a comparable amount of material accreted by the SMBH is ejected through such winds. The average wind power corresponds to about 3 per cent of the Eddington luminosity, confirming that they can drive AGN feedback. Moreover, the most energetic outflows are found in the most luminous sources. We find a possible positive correlation of the wind energetics, renormalized to the Eddington limit, with respect to $\lambda_{Edd}$, consistent with the correlation found with bolometric luminosity. We also observe a possible positive correlation between the energetics of the outflow and the X-ray radio-loudness parameter. We present the results of the X-ray polarimetric analyses performed on unobscured radio-quiet Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), with simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data. The synergy of these instruments is crucial to constrain the X-ray corona physical properties and assess its geometry. In the first two years of operation, three AGN have been observed: significant polarization was detected for NGC 4151 (4.9$\pm$1.1 per cent) and IC 4329A (albeit with less confidence, 3.3$\pm$1.1 per cent), with polarization angles aligned with their radio jets, while only an upper limit was found for MCG-05-23-16 ($<$3.2 per cent). Monte Carlo simulations, conducted to investigate the coronal geometry of these AGN, favor a radially extended corona geometry in NGC 4151 and IC 4329A, a scenario consistent also with MCG-05-23-16, if the disk inclination angle is below 50$^\circ$., Comment: Proceeding of the 12th Young Researcher Meeting. IRASF11119 is an ultra-luminous IR galaxy with post-merger morphology, hosting a type-1 QSO at z=0.189. Its 2013 Suzaku spectrum shows a prominent Ultra Fast Outflow (UFO) absorption feature (v_out~0.25c). In 2021, we obtained the first XMM-Newton long look of the target, coordinated with a simultaneous NuSTAR observation. The new high-quality data allow us to detect at P>99.8% c.l. multiple absorption features associated with the known UFO. Furthermore, an emission plus absorption feature at 1.1-1.3 keV reveals the presence of a blueshifted P-Cygni profile in the soft band. We associate the hard band features with blends of FeXXV and FeXXVI He$\alpha$-Ly$\alpha$ and He$\beta$-Ly$\beta$ line pairs and infer a large column (N$_H$~$10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) of highly ionized (log$\xi$~5) gas outflowing at v_out=0.27c. The 1 keV feature can be associated with a blend of Fe and Ne transitions, produced by a lower column (N$_H$~$10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) and ionization (log$\xi$~2.6) gas component outflowing at the same speed. Using a radiative-transfer disk wind model to fit the highly ionized UFO, we derive a large mass outflow rate, comparable with the mass accretion rate (M$_{out}$=4.25 M$_{Sun}$/yr, ~1.6 M$_{acc}$), and kinetic energy and momentum flux among the highest reported in the literature. We measure an extremely low high-energy cut-off (E$_c$~25 keV). Several other cases in the literature suggest that a steep X-ray continuum may be related to the formation of powerful winds. The lack of a significant momentum boost between the nuclear UFO and the different phases of the large-scale outflow, observed in IRASF11119 and in a growing number of sources with powerful UFOs, can be explained by (i) a momentum-driven expansion, (ii) an inefficient coupling of the UFO with the host ISM, or (iii) by repeated energy-driven expansion episodes with low duty-cycle, that average out on long time-scales., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the detection of X-ray polarisation in the black-hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8$-$1613 during its dim hard spectral state by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). This is the first detection of X-ray polarisation at the transition from the soft to the hard state in an X-ray binary. We find an averaged 2$-$8 keV polarisation degree of (3.3 ${\pm}$ 0.4) % and a corresponding polarisation angle of 3{\deg} ${\pm}$ 4{\deg}, which matches the polarisation detected during the rising stage of the outburst, in September$-$October 2023, within 1${\sigma}$ uncertainty. The observational campaign complements previous studies of this source and enables comparison of the X-ray polarisation properties of a single transient across the X-ray hardness-intensity diagram. The complete recovery of the X-ray polarisation properties, including the energy dependence, came after a dramatic drop in the X-ray polarisation during the soft state. The new IXPE observations in the dim hard state at the reverse transition indicate that the accretion properties, including the geometry of the corona, appear to be strikingly similar to the bright hard state during the outburst rise despite the X-ray luminosities differing by two orders of magnitude., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. The origin of a compact millimeter (mm, 100-250 GHz) emission in radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (RQ AGN) remains debated. Recent studies propose a connection with self-absorbed synchrotron emission from the accretion disk X-ray corona. We present the first joint ALMA ($\sim$100 GHz) and X-ray (NICER/XMM-Newton/Swift; 2-10 keV) observations of the unobscured RQ AGN, IC 4329A ($z = 0.016$). The time-averaged mm-to-X-ray flux ratio aligns with recently established trends for larger samples (Kawamuro et al. 2022, Ricci et al. 2023), but with a tighter scatter ($\sim$0.1 dex) compared to previous studies. However, there is no significant correlation on timescales of less than 20 days. The compact mm emission exhibits a spectral index of $-0.23 \pm 0.18$, remains unresolved with a 13 pc upper limit, and shows no jet signatures. Notably, the mm flux density varies significantly (factor of 3) within 4 days, exceeding the contemporaneous X-ray variability (37% vs. 18%) and showing the largest mm variations ever detected in RQ AGN over daily timescales. The high amplitude variability rules out scenarios of heated dust and thermal free-free emission, pointing toward a synchrotron origin for the mm radiation in a source of $\sim$1 light day size. While the exact source is not yet certain, an X-ray corona scenario emerges as the most plausible compared to a scaled-down jet or outflow-driven shocks.}, Comment: Submitted to A&A

PDS 456 is the most luminous RQQ at z<0.3 and can be regarded as a local counterpart of the powerful QSOs shining at Cosmic Noon. It hosts a strong nuclear X-ray ultra-fast outflow, and a massive and clumpy CO(3-2) molecular outflow extending up to 5 kpc from the nucleus. We analyzed the first MUSE WFM and AO-NFM optical integral field spectroscopic observations of PDS456. The AO-NFM observations provide an unprecedented spatial resolution, reaching up to 280 pc. Our findings reveal a complex circumgalactic medium around PDS 456, extending up to a maximum projected size of ~46 kpc. This includes a reservoir of gas with a mass of ~1e7-1e8 Modot, along with eight companion galaxies, and a multi-phase outflow. WFM and NFM MUSE data reveal an outflow on a large scale (~12 kpc from the quasar) in [OIII], and on smaller scales (within 3 kpc) with higher resolution (about 280 pc) in Halpha, respectively. The [OIII] outflow mass rate is 2.3 +/- 0.2 Modot/yr which is significantly lower than those typically found in other luminous quasars. Remarkably, the Ha outflow shows a similar scale, morphology, and kinematics to the CO(3-2) molecular outflow, with the latter dominating in terms of kinetic energy and mass outflow rate by two and one orders of magnitude, respectively. Our results therefore indicate that mergers, powerful AGN activity, and feedback through AGN-driven winds will collectively contribute to shaping the host galaxy evolution of PDS 456, and likely, that of similar objects at the brightest end of the AGN luminosity function across all redshifts. Moreover, the finding that the momentum boost of the total outflow deviates from the expected energy-conserving expansion for large-scale outflows highlights the need of novel AGN-driven outflow models to comprehensively interpret these phenomena., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The detection of blue-shifted absorption lines likely associated with ionized Iron K-shell transitions in the X-ray spectra of many Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) suggests the presence of a highly ionized gas outflowing with mildly relativistic velocities (0.03c-0.6c), named Ultra-Fast Outflow (UFO). Within the SUBWAYS project we characterized these winds starting from a sample of 22 radio-quiet quasars at 0.1 < z < 0.4, and compared the results with similar studies in the literature on samples of 42 local radio-quiet Seyfert galaxies and 14 high redshift radio-quiet quasars. The scope of our work is a statistical study of UFO parameters and incidence, considering key physical properties of the sources, e.g. supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, bolometric luminosity, accretion rates and Spectral Energy Distribution, with the aim of gaining new insights into the UFO launching mechanisms. We find indications that highly luminous AGN with steeper X-ray/UV ratio, are more likely to host UFO. The presence of UFO is not significantly related to any other AGN property in our sample. These findings suggest that the UFO phenomenon may be transient. Focusing on AGN with UFO, other important results are: (1) faster UFO have larger ionization parameters and column densities; (2) X-ray radiation plays a more crucial role in driving highly ionized winds compared to UV; (3) the correlation between outflow velocity and luminosity is significantly flatter than what expected for radiatively driven winds; (4) more massive BH experience higher wind mass-losses, suppressing accretion of matter onto the BH; (5) the UFO launching radius is positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. Furthermore, our analysis suggest the involvement of multiple launching mechanisms, including radiation pressure and magneto-hydrodynamic processes, rather than pointing to a single, universally applicable mechanism., Comment: 52 pages, 154 figures and 7 tables. We used the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) satellite to measure, for the first time, the 2-8 keV polarization of NGC 1068. We pointed IXPE for a net exposure time of 1.15 Ms on the target, in addition to two ~ 10 ks each Chandra snapshots in order to account for the potential impact of several ultraluminous X-ray source (ULXs) within IXPE's field-of-view. We measured a 2 - 8 keV polarization degree of 12.4% +/- 3.6% and an electric vector polarization angle of 101{\deg} +/- 8{\deg} at 68% confidence level. If we exclude the spectral region containing the bright Fe K lines and other soft X-ray lines where depolarization occurs, the polarization fraction rises up to 21.3% +/- 6.7% in the 3.5 - 6.0 keV band, with a similar polarization angle. The observed polarization angle is found to be perpendicular to the parsec scale radio jet. Using a combined Chandra and IXPE analysis plus multi-wavelength constraints, we estimated that the circumnuclear "torus" may sustain a half-opening angle of 50{\deg} - 55{\deg} (from the vertical axis of the system). Thanks to IXPE, we have measured the X-ray polarization of NGC 1068 and found comparable results, both in terms of polarization angle orientation with respect to the radio-jet and torus half-opening angle, to the X-ray polarimetric measurement achieved for the other archetypal Compton-thick AGN : the Circinus galaxy. Powerful outflows from active galactic nuclei (AGN) can significantly impact the gas reservoirs of their host galaxies. However, it is still unclear how these outflows can propagate from the very central regions of galaxies to their outskirts, and whether nuclear winds can be driven by and/or be responsible for drastic spectral transitions. In this work we test feedback propagation models on the case test of 2MASS 0918+2117 (2M0918), a z=0.149 X-ray variable AGN, which showed tentative evidence for nuclear ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) in a 2005 XMM-Newton observation. We also investigate whether UFOs can be related to the observed X-ray variability. We observed 2M0918 with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR in 2020 to confirm the presence and characterize the UFOs. We perform a kinematic analysis of the 2005 SDSS optical spectrum to reveal and measure the properties of galaxy-scale ionized outflows. Furthermore, we construct 20-year-long lightcurves of observed flux, line-of-sight column density, and intrinsic accretion rate from the spectra of the first 4 SRG/eROSITA all-sky surveys and archival observations from Chandra and XMM-Newton.We significantly detect UFOs with v$\sim$0.16c and galaxy-scale ionized outflows with velocities of $\sim$ 700 km/s. We also find that the drastic X-ray variability (factors >10) can be explained both in terms of variable obscuration and variable intrinsic luminosity.Comparing the energetics of the two outflow phases, 2M0918 is consistent with momentum-driven wind propagation. 2M0918 expands the sample of AGN with both UFOs and ionized gas winds from 5 to 6, and brings the sample of AGN hosting multiscale outflows to 19, contributing to a clearer picture of feedback physics. From the variations in accretion rate, column density, and ionization level of the obscurer, we propose a scenario that connects obscurers, an accretion enhancement, and the emergence of UFOs, Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

We present the results of a joint {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it NuSTAR} campaign on the active galactic nucleus (AGN) IC 4329A, consisting of 9 $\times$ 20 ks {\it XMM-Newton} observations, and 5 $\times$ 20 ks {\it NuSTAR} observations within nine days, performed in August 2021. Within each observation, the AGN is not very variable, with the fractional variability never exceeding 5%. Flux variations are observed between the different observations, on timescales of days, with a 30% ratio between the minimum and the maximum 2-10 keV flux. These variations follow the softer-when-brighter behavior typically observed in AGN. In all observations, a soft excess is clearly present. Consistently with previous observations, the X-ray spectra of the source exhibit a cut-off energy between 140 and 250 keV, constant within the error in the different observations. We detected a prominent component of the $6.4$\,keV Fe~K$\alpha$ line consistent with being constant during the monitoring, consisting of an unresolved narrow core and a broader component likely originating in the inner accredion disc. We find that the reflection component is weak ($R_{\rm max}=0.009\pm0.002$) and most likely originating in distant neutral medium. We also found the presence of a warm absorber component together with an ultra-fast outflow. Looking at their energetic, these outflows have enough mechanical power to exercise a significant feedback impact on the AGN surrounding environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Supermassive black holes can experience super-Eddington peak mass fallback rates following the tidal disruption of a star. The theoretical expectation is that part of the infalling material is expelled by means of an accretion disk wind, whose observational signature includes blueshifted absorption lines of highly ionized species in X-ray spectra. To date, however, only one such ultra-fast outflow (UFO) has been reported in the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-14li. Here we report on the discovery of transient absorption-like signatures in X-ray spectra of the TDE AT2020ksf/Gaia20cjk (at a redshift of $z$=0.092), following an X-ray brightening $\sim 230$ days after UV/optical peak. We find that while no statistically significant absorption features are present initially, they appear on a timescale of several days, and remain detected up to 770 days after peak. Simple thermal continuum models, combined with a power-law or neutral absorber, do not describe these features well. Adding a partial covering, low velocity ionized absorber improves the fit at early times, but fails at late times. A high velocity (v$_w$ $\sim$ 42000 km s$^{-1}$, or -0.15c), ionized absorber (ultra-fast outflow) provides a good fit to all data. The few day timescale of variability is consistent with expectations for a clumpy wind. We discuss several scenarios that could explain the X-ray delay, as well as the potential for larger scale wind feedback. The serendipitous nature of the discovery could suggest a high incidence of UFOs in TDEs, alleviating some of the tension with theoretical expectations., Comment: 14 pages + appendices, accepted for publication in ApJ

Stellar and black hole feedback heat and disperse surrounding cold gas clouds, launching gas flows off circumnuclear and galactic disks and producing a dynamic interstellar medium. On large scales bordering the cosmic web, feedback drives enriched gas out of galaxies and groups, seeding the intergalactic medium with heavy elements. In this way, feedback shapes galaxy evolution by shutting down star formation and ultimately curtailing the growth of structure after the peak at redshift 2-3. To understand the complex interplay between gravity and feedback, we must resolve both the key physics within galaxies and map the impact of these processes over large scales, out into the cosmic web. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) is a proposed X-ray probe mission for the 2030s with arcsecond spatial resolution, large effective area, and low background. Constraining the primary growth channel of supermassive black holes (SMBH) remains one the most actively debated questions in the context of cosmological structure formation. Owing to the expected connection between SMBH spin parameter evolution and the accretion and merger history of individual black holes, population spin measurements offer a rare observational window into the SMBH cosmic growth. As of today, the most common method for estimating SMBH spin relies on modeling the relativistically broaden atomic profiles in the reflection spectrum observed in X-rays. In this paper, we study the observational requirements needed to confidently distinguish between the primary SMBH growth channels, based on their distinct spin-mass distributions predicted by the Horizon-AGN cosmological simulation. In doing so, we characterize outstanding limitations associated with the existing measurements and discuss the landscape of future observational campaigns, which can be planned and executed with future X-ray observatories. We present the results of the first X-ray polarimetric observation of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1957+115, performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer in May 2023. The binary system has been in a high-soft spectral state since its discovery and is thought to host a black hole. The $\sim$571 ks observation reveals a linear polarisation degree of $1.9\% \pm 0.6\%$ and a polarisation angle of $-41^\circ.8 \pm 7^\circ.9$ in the 2-8 keV energy range. Spectral modelling is consistent with the dominant contribution coming from the standard accretion disc, while polarimetric data suggest a significant role of returning radiation: photons that are bent by strong gravity effects and forced to return to the disc surface, where they can be reflected before eventually reaching the observer. In this setting, we find that models with a black hole spin lower than 0.96 and an inclination lower than $50^\circ$ are disfavoured., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are exotic transients that can lead to temporary super-Eddington accretion onto a supermassive black hole. Such accretion mode is naturally expected to result in powerful outflows of ionized matter. However, to date such an outflow has only been directly detected in the X-ray band in a single TDE, ASASSN-14li. This outflow has a low velocity of just a few 100 km/s, although there is also evidence for a second, ultra-fast phase. Here we present the detection of a low-velocity outflow in a second TDE, ASASSN-20qc. The high-resolution X-ray spectrum reveals an array of narrow absorption lines, each blueshifted by a few 100 km/s, which cannot be described by a single photo-ionization phase. For the first time, we confirm the multiphase nature of a TDE outflow, with at least two phases and two distinct velocity components. One highly ionized phase is outflowing at $910^{+90}_{-80}$ km/s, while a lower ionization component is blueshifted by $400_{-120}^{+100}$ km/s. We perform time-resolved analysis of the X-ray spectrum and detect that, surprisingly, the mildly ionized absorber strongly varies in ionization parameter over the course of a single 60 ks observation, indicating that its distance from the black hole may be as low as 400 gravitational radii. During a systematic search for new X-ray pulsators in the XMM-Newton archive, we discovered a high amplitude ($PF\simeq86\%$) periodic ($P\simeq7.25\,\mathrm{s}$) modulation in the X-ray flux of 4XMM J045626.3-694723 (J0456 hereafter), a previously unclassified source in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The period of the modulation is strongly suggestive of a spinning neutron star (NS). The source was detected only during one out of six observations in 2018-2022. Based on an absorbed power-law spectral model with photon slope of $\Gamma\simeq 1.9$, we derive a 0.3-10 keV luminosity of $L_\mathrm{X}\simeq2.7\times10^{34}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for a distance of 50 kpc. The X-ray properties of J0456 are at variance with those of variable LMC X-ray pulsars hosted in high-mass X-ray binary systems with a Be-star companion. Based on SALT spectroscopic observations of the only optical object that matches the X-ray uncertainty region, we cannot completely rule out that J0456 is a NS accreting from a late-type (G8-K3) star, an as-yet-unobserved binary evolutionary outcome in the MCs. We show that the source properties are in better agreement with those of magnetars. J0456 may thus be second known magnetar in the LMC after SGR 0526-66., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. We report on a comprehensive analysis of simultaneous X-ray polarimetric and spectral data of the bright atoll source GX 9+9 with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) and NuSTAR. The source is significantly polarized in the 4--8 keV band, with a degree of $2.2\% \pm 0.5\%$ (uncertainty at the 68% confidence level). The NuSTAR broad-band spectrum clearly shows an iron line, and is well described by a model including thermal disk emission, a Comptonized component, and reflection. From a spectro-polarimetric fit, we obtain an upper limit to the polarization degree of the disk of 4% (at 99% confidence level), while the contribution of Comptonized and reflected radiation cannot be conclusively separated. However, the polarization is consistent with resulting from a combination of Comptonization in a boundary or spreading layer, plus reflection off the disc, which gives a significant contribution in any realistic scenario., Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy IC 4329A. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed the source for ~500 ks, supported by XMM-Newton (~60 ks) and NuSTAR (~80 ks) exposures. We detect polarisation in the 2-8 keV band with 2.97 sigma confidence. We report a polarisation degree of $3.3\pm1.1$ per cent and a polarisation angle of $78\pm10$ degrees (errors are 1 sigma confidence). The X-ray polarisation is consistent with being aligned with the radio jet, albeit partially due to large uncertainties on the radio position angle. We jointly fit the spectra from the three observatories to constrain the presence of a relativistic reflection component. From this, we obtain constraints on the inclination angle to the inner disc (< 39 degrees at 99 per cent confidence) and the disc inner radius (< 11 gravitational radii at 99 per cent confidence), although we note that modelling systematics in practice add to the quoted statistical error. Our spectro-polarimetric modelling indicates that the 2-8 keV polarisation is consistent with being dominated by emission directly observed from the X-ray corona, but the polarisation of the reflection component is completely unconstrained. Our constraints on viewer inclination and polarisation degree tentatively favour more asymmetric, possibly out-flowing, coronal geometries that produce more highly polarised emission, but the coronal geometry is unconstrained at the 3 sigma level., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 9 figures

We report on the second observation of the radio-quiet active galactic nucleus (AGN) MCG-05-23-16 performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The observation started on 2022 November 6 for a net observing time of 640 ks, and was partly simultaneous with NuSTAR (86 ks). After combining these data with those obtained in the first IXPE pointing on May 2022 (simultaneous with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR) we find a 2-8 keV polarization degree $\Pi$ = 1.6 $\pm$ 0.7 (at 68 per cent confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit $\Pi$ = 3.2 per cent (at 99 per cent confidence level). We then compare the polarization results with Monte Carlo simulations obtained with the MONK code, with which different coronal geometries have been explored (spherical lamppost, conical, slab and wedge). Furthermore, the allowed range of inclination angles is found for each geometry. The existence of luminous quasars (QSO) at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR; i.e. z>6) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBH) with masses $\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot$ challenges models of early SMBH formation. To shed light on the nature of these sources we started a multiwavelength programme based on a sample of 18 HYPerluminous quasars at the Epoch of ReionizatION (HYPERION). These are the luminous QSOs whose SMBH must have had the fastest mass growth during the Universe first Gyr. In this paper we present the HYPERION sample and report on the first of the 3 years planned observations of the 2.4 Ms XMM-Newton Multi-Year Heritage program on which HYPERION is based. The goal of this program is to accurately characterize the X-ray nuclear properties of QSOs at the EoR. Through a joint X-ray spectral analysis of 10 sources, in the rest-frame $\sim2-50$ keV range, we report a steep average photon index ($\Gamma\sim2.4\pm0.1$). Absorption is not required. The average $\Gamma$ is inconsistent at $\geq4\sigma$ level with the canonical 1.8-2 value measured in QSO at z<6. This spectral slope is also much steeper than that reported in lower-z QSOs with similar luminosity or accretion rate, thus suggesting a genuine redshift evolution. Alternatively, we can interpret this result as the presence of an unusually low-energy cutoff $E_{cut}\sim20$ keV on a standard $\Gamma=1.9$ power-law. We also report on mild indications that HYPERION QSOs show higher soft X-ray emission at 2 keV compared to the UV one at 2500A than expected by lower-z luminous AGN. We speculate that a redshift-dependent coupling between the corona and accretion disc or intrinsically different coronal properties may account for the steep spectral slopes, especially in the presence of powerful winds. X Persei is a persistent low-luminosity X-ray pulsar of period of $\sim$835 s in a Be binary system. The field strength at the neutron star surface is not known precisely, but indirect signs indicate a magnetic field above $10^{13}$ G, which makes the object one of the most magnetized known X-ray pulsars. Here we present the results of observations X Persei performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The X-ray polarization signal was found to be strongly dependent on the spin phase of the pulsar. The energy-averaged polarization degree in 3-8 keV band varied from several to $\sim$20 per cent over the pulse with a positive correlation with the pulsed X-ray flux. The polarization angle shows significant variation and makes two complete revolutions during the pulse period resulting in nearly nil pulse-phase averaged polarization. Applying the rotating vector model to the IXPE data we obtain the estimates for the rotation axis inclination and its position angle on the sky as well as for the magnetic obliquity. The derived inclination is close to the orbital inclination reported earlier for X Persei. The polarimetric data imply a large angle between the rotation and magnetic dipole axes, which is similar to the result reported recently for the X-ray pulsar GRO J1008$-$57. After eliminating the effect of polarization angle rotation over the pulsar phase using the best-fitting rotating vector model, the strong dependence of the polarization degree with energy was discovered with its value increasing from 0% at $\sim$2 keV to 30% at 8 keV., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy NGC4151. The source has been observed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) for 700 ks, complemented with simultaneous XMM-Newton (50 ks) and NuSTAR (100 ks) pointings. A polarization degree ${\Pi} = 4.9 {\pm} 1.1 \%$ and angle ${\Psi}= 86{\deg} {\pm} 7{\deg}$ east of north ($68\%$ confidence level) are measured in the 2-8 keV energy range. The spectro-polarimetric analysis shows that the polarization could be entirely due to reflection. Given the low reflection flux in the IXPE band, this requires however a reflection with a very large ($> 38 \%$) polarization degree. Assuming more reasonable values, a polarization degree of the hot corona ranging from ${\sim}4$ to ${\sim}8\%$ is found. The observed polarization degree excludes a spherical lamppost geometry for the corona, suggesting instead a slab-like geometry, possibly a wedge, as determined via Monte Carlo simulations. This is further confirmed by the X-ray polarization angle, which coincides with the direction of the extended radio emission in this source, supposed to match the disc axis. NGC4151 is the first AGN with an X-ray polarization measure for the corona, illustrating the capabilities of X-ray polarimetry and IXPE in unveiling its geometry., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The bulk of X-ray spectroscopic studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are focused on local ($z < 0.1$) sources with low-to-moderate ($< 0.3$) Eddington ratio ($\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$). It is then mandatory to overcome this limitation and improve our understanding of highly accreting AGN. In this work we present the preliminary results from the analysis of a sample of $\sim70$ high-$\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$ radio-quiet AGN at $0.06 \leq z \leq 3.3$, based on the 10th release of the XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue, that we named as XMM-Newton High-Eddington Serendipitous AGN Sample (X-HESS). Almost $\sim35\%$ of the X-HESS AGN have multi-epoch archival observations and $\sim70\%$ of the sources can rely on simultaneous OM optical data. First results reveal sources showing signatures of ultra-fast outflows and remarkable long- and short-term X-ray flux variations. Indeed in J095847.88+690532.7 ($z \sim 1.3$), one of the most densely monitored objects hosting a $\sim$$10^9\,M_\odot$ supermassive black hole, we discovered a variation of the soft X-ray flux by a factor of > 2 over approximately one week (rest-frame). Large variations in the power-law continuum photon index $\Gamma$ are also observed, questioning expectations from previously reported $\Gamma - \lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$ relations, for which $\Gamma \geq 2$ would be a ubiquitous hallmark of AGN with $\lambda_\mathrm{Edd} \sim 1$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, proceedings of the XMM-Newton Workshop 2022 "Black hole accretion under the X-ray microscope". Layers of ionized plasma, in the form of winds ejected from the accretion disk of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) are frequently observed in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Winds with a velocity often exceeding $0.1c$ are called Ultra-Fast-Outflows (UFOs) and thanks to their high power they can play a key role in the co-evolution between the SMBH and the host galaxy. In order to construct a proper model of the properties of these winds, it is necessary to consider special relativistic corrections due to their very high velocities. We present a derivation of the Poynting-Robertson effect (P-R effect) and apply it to the description of the dynamics of UFOs. The P-R effect is a special relativistic correction which breaks the isotropy of the radiation emitted by a moving particle funneling the radiation in the direction of motion. As a result of the conservation of the four-momentum, the emitting particles are subjected to a drag force and decelerate. We provide a derivation of the drag force caused by the P-R effect starting from general Lorentz transformations and assuming isotropic emission in the gas reference frame. Then, we derive the equations to easily implement this drag force in future simulations. Finally, we apply them in a toy model in which the gas particles move radially under the influence of the gravitation force, the radiation pressure and the drag due to the P-R effect. P-R effect plays an important role in determining the velocity profile of the wind. For a wind launched from $r_0=10r_s$ (where $r_S$ stands for the Schwarzschild radius), the asymptotic velocity reached by the wind is between $10$% and $24$% smaller than the one it would possess if we neglect the effect. We report spectro-polarimetric results of an observational campaign of the bright neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2 simultaneously observed by IXPE, NICER and INTEGRAL. Consistently with previous results, the broad-band spectrum is characterized by a lower-energy component, attributed to the accretion disc with $kT_{\rm in} \approx$ 1 keV, plus unsaturated Comptonization in thermal plasma with temperature $kT_{\rm e} = 3$ keV and optical depth $\tau \approx 4$, assuming a slab geometry. We measure the polarization degree in the 2-8 keV band $P=1.8 \pm 0.3$ per cent and polarization angle $\phi = 140^{\circ} \pm 4^{\circ}$, consistent with the previous X-ray polarimetric measurements by OSO-8 as well as with the direction of the radio jet which was earlier observed from the source. While polarization of the disc spectral component is poorly constrained with the IXPE data, the Comptonized emission has a polarization degree $P =4.0 \pm 0.7$ per cent and a polarization angle aligned with the radio jet. Our results strongly favour a spreading layer at the neutron star surface as the main source of the polarization signal. We present a new X-ray spectroscopic study of $22$ luminous ($2\times10^{45}\lesssim L_{\rm bol}\rm /erg\,s^{-1} \lesssim 2\times10^{46}$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate-redshift ($0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.4$), as part of the SUpermassive Black hole Winds in the x-rAYS (SUBWAYS) sample, mostly composed of quasars (QSOs) and type\,1 AGN. Here, 17 targets were observed with \textit{XMM-Newton} between 2019--2020 and the remaining 5 are from previous observations. The aim of this large campaign ($1.45\,\rm Ms$ duration) is to characterise the various manifestations of winds in the X-rays driven from supermassive black holes in AGN. In this paper we focus on the search and characterization of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), which are typically detected through blueshifted absorption troughs in the Fe\,K band ($E>7\,\rm keV$). By following Monte Carlo procedures, we confirm the detection of absorption lines corresponding to highly ionised iron (e.g., Fe\,\textsc{xxv}\,H$\alpha$, Fe\,\textsc{xxvi}\,Ly$\alpha$) in 7/22 sources at the $\gtrsim95\%$ confidence level (for each individual line). The global combined probability of such absorption features in the sample is $>99.9\%$. The SUBWAYS campaign extends at higher luminosity and redshifts than previous local studies on Seyferts, obtained using \xmm and \suzaku observations. We find a UFO detection fraction of $\sim30\%$ on the total sample that is in agreement with the previous findings. This work independently provides further support for the existence of highly-ionised matter propagating at mildly relativistic speed ($\gtrsim0.1c$) in a considerable fraction of AGN over a broad range of luminosities, which is expected to play a key role in the self-regulated AGN feeding-feedback cycle, as also supported by hydrodynamical multiphase simulations., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a UV spectroscopic study of ionized outflows in 21 active galactic nuclei (AGN), observed with the HST. The targets of the SUBWAYS sample were selected with the aim to probe the parameter space of the underexplored AGN between the local Seyfert galaxies and the luminous quasars at high redshifts. Our targets, spanning redshifts of 0.1-0.4 and bolometric luminosities (L_bol) of 10^45-10^46 erg/s, have been observed with a large multi-wavelength campaign. Here, we model the UV spectra and look for different types of AGN outflows. We find that 60% of our targets show a presence of outflowing H I absorption, while 40% exhibit ionized outflows seen as absorption by either C IV, N V, or O VI. This is comparable to the occurrence of ionized outflows seen in the local Seyfert galaxies. All UV absorption lines in the sample are relatively narrow, with outflow velocities reaching up to -3300 km/s. We did not detect any UV counterparts to the X-ray ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), most likely due to their being too highly ionized. However, all SUBWAYS targets with an X-ray UFO demonstrate the presence of UV outflows at lower velocities. We find significant correlations between the column density (N) of the UV ions and L_bol of the AGN, with N of H I decreasing with L_bol, while N of O VI is increasing with L_bol. This is likely to be a photoionization effect, where toward higher AGN luminosities, the wind becomes more ionized, resulting in less absorption by neutral or low-ionization ions and more absorption by high-ionization ions. In addition, we find that N of the UV ions decreases as their outflow velocity increases. This may be explained by a mechanical power that is evacuating the UV-absorbing medium. We report on the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation of the closest and X-ray brightest Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN), the Circinus galaxy. We find the source to be significantly polarized in the 2--6 keV band. From previous studies, the X-ray spectrum is known to be dominated by reflection components, both neutral (torus) and ionized (ionization cones). Our analysis indicates that the polarization degree is $28 \pm 7$ per cent (at 68 per cent confidence level) for the neutral reflector, with a polarization angle of $18{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}$, roughly perpendicular to the radio jet. The polarization of the ionized reflection is unconstrained. A comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of the polarization expected from the torus shows that the neutral reflector is consistent with being an equatorial torus with a half-opening angle of 45{\deg}-55{\deg}. The Sun cubE onE (SEE) is a 12U CubeSat mission proposed for a phase A/B study to the Italian Space Agency that will investigate Gamma and X-ray fluxes and ultraviolet (UV) solar emission to support studies in Sun-Earth interaction and Space Weather from LEO. More in detail, SEE's primary goals are to measure the flares emission from soft-X to Gamma ray energy range and to monitor the solar activity in the Fraunhofer Mg II doublet at 280 nm, taking advantage of a full disk imager payload. The Gamma and X-ray fluxes will be studied with unprecedented temporal resolution and with a multi-wavelength approach thanks to the combined use of silicon photodiode and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) -based detectors. The flare spectrum will be explored from the keV to the MeV range of energies by the same payload, and with a cadence up to 10 kHz and with single-photon detection capabilities to unveil the sources of the solar flares. The energy range covers the same bands used by GOES satellites, which are the standard bands for flare magnitude definition. At the same time SiPM detectors combined with scintillators allow to cover the non-thermal bremsstrahlung emission in the gamma energy range. Given its UV imaging capabilities, SEE will be a key space asset to support detailed studies on solar activity, especially in relation to ultraviolet radiation which strongly interacts with the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere, and in relation to space safety, included in the field of human space exploration. The main goal for the UV payload is to study the evolution of the solar UV emission in the Mg II band at two different time scales: yearly variations along the solar cycle and transient variations during flare events., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Microcalorimeters have demonstrated success in delivering high spectral resolution, and have paved the path to revolutionary new science possibilities in the coming decade of X-ray astronomy. There are several research areas in compact object science that can only be addressed with energy resolution Delta(E)<~5 eV at photon energies of a few keV, corresponding to velocity resolution of <~a few hundred km/s, to be ushered in by microcalorimeters. Here, we review some of these outstanding questions, focusing on how the research landscape is set to be transformed (i) at the interface between accreting supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, (ii) in unravelling the structures of accretion environments, (iii) in resolving long-standing issues on the origins of energy and matter feedback, and (iv) to test mass-scaled unification of accretion and feedback. We report on the first observation of a radio-quiet Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) using polarized X-rays: the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-05-23-16. This source was pointed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) starting on May 14, 2022 for a net observing time of 486 ks, simultaneously with XMM-Newton (58 ks) and NuSTAR (83 ks). A polarization degree smaller than $\Pi<4.7\%$ (at the 99% c.l.) is derived in the 2-8 keV energy range, where emission is dominated by the primary component ascribed to the hot corona. The broad-band spectrum, inferred from a simultaneous fit to the IXPE, NuSTAR, and XMM-Newton data, is well reproduced by a power law with photon index $\Gamma=1.85\pm0.01$ and a high-energy cutoff $E_{\rm C}=120\pm15$ keV. A comparison with Monte Carlo simulations shows that a lamp-post and a conical geometry of the corona are consistent with the observed upper limit, a slab geometry is allowed only if the inclination angle of the system is less than 50$^{\circ}$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We report on the variability of a multi-component broad absorption line (BAL) system observed in the hyper-luminous quasar J1538+0855 at z=3.6. Observations from SDSS, VLT, LBT and Subaru telescopes taken at five different epochs, spanning 17 yr in the observed frame, are presented. We detect three (A, B, C) CIV variable troughs exhibiting extreme velocities ($\sim$40,000-54,000 km s$^{-1}$) similar to the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) typically observed in the X-ray spectra. The A component of the BAL UFO ($\rm v_{ufo}$ $\sim$0.17 c) shows strength variations, while B ($\rm v_{ufo}$ $\sim$0.15 c) and C ($\rm v_{ufo}$ $\sim$0.13 c) components show changes both in shape and strength, appearing and disappearing at different epochs. In addition, during the last observation on June 2021 the entire BAL system disappears. The variability trends observed during the first two epochs (1.30 yr rest-frame) in the CIV, SiIV, OVI and NV absorption spectral regions are the same for B and C troughs, while the A component of the BAL varies independently. This suggests a change in the ionization state of the absorbing gas for B and C components and tangential motion for the A component, as causes of this temporal behavior. Accordingly, it is possible to provide an upper limit for distance of the gas responsible for the A component of $R\rm_{out}^{A}$$\le$58 pc, and in turn, a kinetic power of $\dot{E}\rm_{K,ufo}$ $\le$5.2 $\times$ 10$^{44}$ erg s$\rm^{-1}$. We also obtain $R\rm_{out}^{B,C}$ $\le$2.7 kpc for B and C components, which implies an upper limit estimation of $\dot{E}\rm_{K,ufo}$ $\le$2.1$\times$10$^{46}$ erg s$\rm^{-1}$ and $\dot{E}\rm_{K,ufo}$ $\le$1.4$\times$10$^{46}$ erg s$\rm^{-1}$, respectively. Future spectral monitoring with high-resolution instruments is mandatory to accurately constrain physical properties of the BAL UFO discovered in the UV spectrum of J1538+0855., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Extragalactic water maser emissions at 22 GHz have been playing vital roles in astrophysics. The limited detection rate of these masers has been motivating researchers to find clues that can help characterise them. The physical environments 22 GHz masers formed in are still ambiguous. Accordingly, statistical studies have been thoroughly used to resolve these favourable environments. This work goes through the essential parameter of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), namely, the mass of the central supermassive black hole (MBH) of the maser host galaxy. We study the correlation between maser luminosity (LH2O) and MBH in sub-samples of megamasers (MMs), kilomasers (KMs), and disc masers. The regression line of the relation is also calculated for these sub-samples. Unlike the results of previous works, dividing the maser sample into MMs and KMs gives no privilege to MM galaxies. Contrary to expectation, KMs have weak and low significant LH2O - MBH correlation, while MMs show no correlation. The positive correlation in KMs can be explained by the role of AGN therein, while the diversity of MMs types, with some of which are not strongly related to AGN, may explain the correlation missing. Surprisingly, the 28 disc maser sample, where tight correlation is expected, shows a very weak and low significant LH2O-MBH correlation. Future VLBI studies will eventually lead to a specific classification of a good number of maser galaxies, which is essential to establishing the LH2O-MBH relation.

It is well-known that active galactic nuclei (AGN) are accompanied by winds and outflows, some of which may reach weakly relativistic speeds of about $10$ percent the speed of light. Yet, in spite of their ubiquity, the impact of AGN outflows in modulating surface habitability of terrestrial planets on galactic scales, using the Milky Way as the basis for comparison, is poorly investigated and inadequately understood. In this work, we address this issue by focusing on two key mechanisms: AGN winds can heat atmospheres and drive atmospheric escape, as well as stimulate the formation of nitrogen oxides and thence cause ozone depletion. By developing simple models, we estimate the maximal distance up to which these deleterious effects are rendered significant for Earth-like planets in the Milky Way, and thereby demonstrate that this value may extend to $\lesssim 1$ kpc. In the case of quasars hosting larger supermassive black holes, such effects could actually influence the AGN host galaxy as a whole., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Accepted in MNRAS

Improving our understanding of the nuclear properties of high-Eddington ratio ($\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$) active galactic nuclei (AGN) is necessary since the bulk of X-ray spectroscopic studies have been focused on low-Eddington AGN. We present here the X-ray spectral analysis of 14 radio-quiet, $\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}\gtrsim1$ AGN at $0.4\leq z \leq 0.75$, observed with XMM-Newton. Optical/UV data from simultaneous Optical Monitor observations have been also considered. These AGN have been selected to have relatively high values of black hole mass ($M_\mathrm{BH}\sim10^{8-8.5}M_\odot$) and bolometric luminosity ($L_\mathrm{bol} \sim 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$), in order to complement previous studies of high-Eddington AGN at lower $M_\mathrm{BH}$ and $L_\mathrm{bol}$. We studied the relation between $\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$ and other key X-ray spectral parameters, such as the photon index of the power-law continuum $\Gamma$, the X-ray bolometric correction $k_\mathrm{bol,X}$ and $\alpha_\mathrm{ox}$. Despite the homogeneous optical and SMBH accretion properties, the X-ray properties of these high-Eddington AGN are quite heterogeneous. We measured values of $\Gamma$ comprised between 1.3 and 2.5, at odds with the expectations based on previously reported $\Gamma-\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}$ relations, by which $\Gamma\geq2$ would be an ubiquitous hallmark of AGN with $\lambda_\mathrm{Edd}\sim1$. We found that $\sim30\%$ of the sources are X-ray weak, with an X-ray emission about a factor of $\sim10-80$ fainter than that of typical AGN at similar UV luminosities. The X-ray weakness seems to be intrinsic and not due to intervening obscuration. This may indicate that high-Eddington AGN commonly undergo periods of intrinsic X-ray weakness. Furthermore, results from a follow-up monitoring with Swift of one of these X-ray weak AGN suggest that these periods can last for several years., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures (with 2 more figures in Appendix A and B). We present the analysis of the ALMA CO(2-1) emission line and the underlying 1.2 mm continuum of Mrk509 with spatial resolution of 270 pc. This local Seyfert 1.5 galaxy, optically classified as a spheroid, is known to host a ionised disc, a starburst ring, and ionised gas winds on both nuclear and galactic scales. From CO(2-1) we estimate a molecular gas mass $M_{H_2}=1.7\times 10^9\, \rm M_{\odot}$, located within a disc of size 5.2 kpc, with $M_{dyn}$=(2.0$\pm$1.1) $\times$ $10^{10}\, \rm M_{\odot}$ inclined at $44\pm10$ deg. The molecular gas fraction within the disc is $\mu_{gas}=5\%$. The gas kinematics in the nuclear region within r=700 pc suggests the presence of a warped nuclear disc. Both the presence of a molecular disc with ongoing star-formation in a starburst ring, and the signatures of a minor merger, are in agreement with the scenario where galaxy mergers produce gas destabilization, feeding both star-formation and AGN activity. The spatially-resolved Toomre Q-parameter across the molecular disc is in the range $Q_{gas}=0.5-10$, and shows that the disc is marginally unstable across the starburst ring, and stable at nucleus and in a lopsided ring-like structure located inside of the starburst ring. We find complex molecular gas kinematics and significant kinematics perturbations at two locations, one within 300 pc from the nucleus, and one 1.4 kpc away close to the region with high $Q_{gas}$, that we interpret as molecular winds. The total molecular outflow rate is in the range 6.4-17.0 $\rm M_\odot/yr$. The molecular wind total kinetic energy is consistent with a multiphase momentum-conserving wind driven by the AGN with $\dot{P}_{of}/\dot{P}_{rad}$ in the range 0.06-0.5. The spatial overlap of the inner molecular wind with the ionised wind, and their similar velocity suggest a cooling sequence within a multiphase AGN driven wind., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables Accepted by A&A

Photoionized absorbers of outflowing gas are commonly found in the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). While most of these absorbers are seldom significantly variable, some ionized obscurers have been increasingly found to substantially change their column density on a wide range of time scales. These $N_\text{H}$ variations are often considered as the signature of the clumpy nature of the absorbers. Here we present the analysis of a new Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory campaign of the type-1 quasar PG 1114+445, which was observed to investigate the time evolution of the multiphase outflowing absorbers previously detected in its spectra. The analyzed dataset consists of 22 observations, with a total exposure of $\sim90$ ks, spanning about $20$ months. During the whole campaign, we report an unusually low flux state with respect to all previous X-ray observations of this quasar. From the analysis of the stacked spectra we find a fully covering absorber with a column density $\log(N_\text{H}/\text{cm}^{-2})=22.9^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$. This is an order of magnitude higher than the column density measured in the previous observations. This is either due to a variation of the known absorbers, or by a new one, eclipsing the X-ray emitting source. We also find a ionization parameter of $\log(\xi/\text{erg cm s}^{-1})=1.4^{+0.6}_{-0.2}$. Assuming that the obscuration lasts for the whole duration of the campaign, i.e. more than $20$ months, we estimate the minimum distance of the ionized clump, which is located at $r\gtrsim0.5$ pc., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. In the BH-galaxy co-evolution framework, most of the star-formation (SF) and the black hole (BH) accretion is expected to take place in highly obscured conditions. Thus, obscured AGN are difficult to identify in optical or X-ray bands, but shine bright in the IR. Moreover, X-ray background (XRB) synthesis models predict that a large fraction of the yet-unresolved XRB is due to the most obscured (Compton thick, CT) of these AGN. In this work, we investigate the synergies between putative IR missions (using SPICA, proposed for ESA/M5 but withdrawn in October 2020, and Origins Space Telescope, OST, as `templates') and the X-ray mission Athena, which should fly in early 2030s, in detecting and characterizing AGN, with a particular focus on the most obscured ones. Using an XRB synthesis model, we estimated the number of AGN and the number of those which will be detected in the X-rays. For each AGN we associated an optical-to-FIR SED from observed AGN with both X-ray data and SED decomposition, and used these SEDs to check if the AGN will be detected by SPICA-like or OST at IR wavelengths. We expect that, with the deepest Athena and SPICA-like (or OST) surveys, we will be able to detect in the IR more than $90\,\%$ of all the AGN (down to L$_{2-10\text{keV}} \sim 10^{42}\,$erg/s and up to $z \sim 10$) predicted by XRB synthesis modeling, and we will detect at least half of them in the X-rays. Athena will be extremely powerful in detecting and discerning moderate- and high-luminosity AGN. We find that the most obscured and elusive CT-AGN will be exquisitely sampled by SPICA-like mission or OST and that Athena will allow a fine characterization of the most-luminous ones. This will provide a significant step forward in the process of placing stronger constraints on the yet-unresolved XRB and investigating the BH accretion rate evolution up to very high redshift ($z \ge 4$)., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASA

We present the discovery of eclipses in the X-ray light curves of the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6-0814. From these, we find an orbital period of $P=76841.3_{-1.4}^{+1.3}$ s ($\approx21.3$ hours) and an eclipse duration of $t_{\rm ec}=4098_{-18}^{+17}$ s ($\approx1.14$ hours). We also find several absorption dips during the pre-eclipse phase. From the eclipse duration to orbital period ratio, the inclination of the binary orbit is constrained to $i>70^\circ$. The most likely range for the companion mass suggests that the inclination is likely to be closer to this value than $90^\circ$. The eclipses are also consistent with earlier data, in which strong variability ('flares') and the long orbital period prevent clear detection of the period or eclipses. We also find that the bright flares occurred preferentially in the post-eclipse phase of the orbit, likely due to increased thickness at the disc-accretion stream interface preventing flares being visible during the pre-eclipse phase. Ultra Fast Outflows (UFOs) are an established feature in X-ray spectra of AGNs. According to the standard picture, they are launched at accretion disc scales with relativistic velocities, up to 0.3-0.4 c. Their high kinetic power is enough to induce an efficient feedback on galactic-scale, possibly contributing to the co-evolution between the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) and the host galaxy. It is therefore of paramount importance to fully understand the UFO physics, in particular the forces driving their acceleration and the relation with the accretion flow they originate from. In this paper we investigate the impact of special relativity effects on the radiative pressure exerted onto the outflow. The radiation received by the wind decreases for increasing outflow velocity v, implying that the standard Eddington limit argument has to be corrected according to v. Due to the limited ability of the radiation to counteract the SMBH gravity, we expect to find lower typical velocities with respect to the non-relativistic scenario. We integrate the relativistic-corrected outflow equation of motion for a realistic set of starting conditions. We concentrate on UFO typical values of ionisation, column density and launching radius. We explore a one-dimensional, spherical geometry and a 3D setting with a rotating thin accretion disc. We find that the inclusion of relativistic effects leads to sizeable differences in the wind dynamics and that v is reduced up to 50% with respect to the non-relativistic treatment. We compare our results with a sample of UFO from the literature, and we find that the relativistic-corrected velocities are systematically lower than the reported ones, indicating the need for an additional mechanism, such as magnetic driving, to explain the highest velocity components. Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) play a key role in the AGN feedback mechanism. It is therefore important to fully characterize their location and energetics. We study the UFO in the latest XMM-Newton archival observation of the NLSy1 galaxy PG 1448+273 by means of a novel modeling tool, that is, the Wind in the Ionized Nuclear Environment model (WINE). Our detection of the UFO in PG 1448+273 is very robust. The outflowing material is highly ionized, $\log\xi = 5.53_{-0.05}^{+0.04}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm, has a large column density, $N_\mathrm{H} = 4.5_{-1.1}^{+0.8} \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, is ejected with a maximum velocity $v_0 = 0.24^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\,c$ (90% c.l. errors), and attains an average velocity $v_\mathrm{avg} = 0.152\,c$. WINE succeeds remarkably well to constrain a launching radius of $r_0=77_{-19}^{+31} \, r_\mathrm{S}$ from the black hole. We also derive a lower limit on both the opening angle of the wind ($\theta > 72^{\circ}$) and the covering factor ($C_\mathrm{f} > 0.69$). We find a mass outflow rate $\dot{M}_\mathrm{out}=0.65^{+0.44}_{-0.33}\,M_\odot \mathrm{yr}^{-1} = 2.0^{+1.3}_{-1.0}\, \dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}$ and a large instantaneous outflow kinetic power $\dot{E}_\mathrm{out}=4.4^{+4.4}_{-3.6} \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ = 24% $L_\mathrm{bol}$ = 18% $L_\mathrm{Edd}$ ($1 \sigma$ errors). We find that a major error contribution on the energetics is due to $r_0$, stressing the importance of an accurate determination through a proper spectral modeling, as done with WINE. Using 20 Swift (UVOT and XRT) observations and the simultaneous OM data from XMM-Newton, we also find that $\alpha_\mathrm{ox}$ undergoes large variations, with a maximum excursion of $\Delta\alpha_\mathrm{ox} =-0.7$, after the UFO is detected, leading to a remarkable X-ray weakness. We use MUSE adaptive optics (AO) data in Narrow Field Mode to study the properties of the ionised gas in MR 2251-178 and PG 1126-041, two nearby (z~0.06) bright quasars hosting sub-pc scale Ultra Fast Outflows (UFOs) detected in the X-ray band. We decompose the optical emission from diffuse gas into a low- and a high-velocity components. The former is characterised by a clean, regular velocity field and a low (~80 km/s) velocity dispersion. It traces regularly rotating gas in PG 1126-041, while in MR 2251-178 it is possibly associated to tidal debris from a recent merger or flyby. The other component is found to be extended up to a few kpc from the nuclei, and shows a high (~800 km/s) velocity dispersion and a blue-shifted mean velocity, as expected from AGN-driven outflows. We estimate mass outflow rates up to a few Mo/yr and kinetic efficiencies between 0.1-0.4 per cent, in line with those of galaxies hosting AGNs of similar luminosity. The momentum rates of these ionised outflows are comparable to those measured for the UFOs at sub-pc scales, consistent with a momentum-driven wind propagation. Pure energy-driven winds are excluded unless about 100x additional momentum is locked in massive molecular winds. By comparing the outflow properties of our sources with those of a small sample of well-studied QSOs hosting UFOs from the literature, we find that winds seem to systematically lie either in a momentum-driven or in an energy-driven regime, indicating that these two theoretical models bracket very well the physics of AGN-driven winds., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. We studied the outburst evolution and timing properties of the recently discovered X-ray transient MAXI J1348-630 as observed with NICER. We produced the fundamental diagrams commonly used to trace the spectral evolution, and power density spectra to study the fast X-ray variability. The main outburst evolution of MAXI J1348-630 is similar to that commonly observed in black hole transients. The source evolved from the hard state, through hard- and soft-intermediate states, into the soft state in the outburst rise, and back to the hard state in reverse during the outburst decay. At the end of the outburst, MAXI J1348-630 underwent two reflares with peak fluxes ~1 and ~2 orders of magnitude fainter than the main outburst, respectively. During the reflares, the source remained in the hard state only, without undergoing any state transitions, which is similar to the so-called "failed outbursts". Different types of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed at different phases of the outburst. A sample of 30 H2O extra-galactic maser galaxies with their published HCN(J=1-0) and HCO+(J=1-0) observations has been compiled to investigate the dense gas correlation with H2O maser emission. Our sample number exceeds the size of the previous HCN samples studied so far by a factor of three, and it is the first study on the possible relation with the dense gas tracer HCO+. We find a strong correlation between normalized H2O maser emission luminosity (LH2O\LCO) and normalized HCO+ line luminosity (LHCO+\LCO). Moreover, a weak correlation has been found between LH2O\LCO and normalized HCN line luminosity (LHCN\LCO). The sample is also studied after excluding Luminous and Ultraluminous infrared galaxy (U)LIRG sources, and the mentioned correlations are noticeably stronger. We show that 'Dense gas' fractions as obtained from HCN and HCO+ molecules tightly correlate with maser emission, especially for galaxies with normal IR luminosity(LIR< 10^11Lsun) and we show that HCO+ is a better 'dense gas' tracer than HCN. Further systematic studies of these dense gas tracers with higher transition level lines are vital to probe megamaser physical conditions and to accurately determining how maser emission interrelates with the dense gas.

Swift J1858.6-0814 is a recently discovered X-ray binary notable for extremely strong variability (by factors $>100$ in soft X-rays) in its discovery state. We present the detection of five thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from Swift J1858.6-0814, implying that the compact object in the system is a neutron star. Some of the bursts show photospheric radius expansion, so their peak flux can be used to estimate the distance to the system. The peak luminosity, and hence distance, can depend on several system parameters; for the most likely values, a high inclination and a helium atmosphere, $D=12.8_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ kpc, although systematic effects allow a conservative range of $9-18$ kpc. Before one burst, we detect a QPO at $9.6\pm0.5$ mHz with a fractional rms amplitude of $2.2\pm0.2$% ($0.5-10$ keV), likely due to marginally stable burning of helium; similar oscillations may be present before the other bursts but the light curves are not long enough to allow their detection. We also search for burst oscillations but do not detect any, with an upper limit in the best case of 15% fractional amplitude (over $1-8$ keV). Finally, we discuss the implications of the neutron star accretor and this distance on other inferences which have been made about the system. Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) are characterized by the emission of a short burst of high-energy radiation. We analyze the cumulative impact of TDEs on galactic habitability using the Milky Way as a proxy. We show that X-rays and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation emitted during TDEs can cause hydrodynamic escape and instigate biological damage. By taking the appropriate variables into consideration, such as the efficiency of atmospheric escape and distance from the Galactic center, we demonstrate that the impact of TDEs on galactic habitability is comparable to that of Active Galactic Nuclei. In particular, we show that planets within distances of $\sim 0.1$-$1$ kpc could lose Earth-like atmospheres over the age of the Earth, and that some of them might be subject to biological damage once every $\gtrsim 10^4$ yrs. We conclude by highlighting potential ramifications of TDEs and argue that they should be factored into future analyses of inner galactic habitability., Comment: MNRAS, in press
