Organizations exist in a differentiated spatial ecology generated by past foundings and failures and affecting important organizational and individual outcomes. While ecological theory has traditionally emphasized the temporal evolution of organizational populations, this article considers their spatial evolution. Theories of spatial contagion, competition, and density dependence are used to make competing predictions on how geographically delineated subpopulations grow and interact with neighboring subpopulations. The hypotheses are tested on data from the early history of banking in Tokyo, with findings supportive of density dependence within areas and among neighboring areas. This article traces twenty-five years of the adaptation of a representative, modest-size Shinto shrine in an urban Japanese neighborhood, to population shifts and to the new prosperity. The annual autumn festival has shrunk in size and as a significant event in the neighborhood calendar; the mythic mime-dance has become too costly, with too few professional practitioners, and has thus all but disappeared. The structures of the shrine organization remain strong and in place, though conspicuously dependent on the personal charisma and diplomatic skills of the priest; the sacral formalities of the season are basically unchanged, and even show some small capacity for adjustment to new values in a new age. The day-of-the-week effect of Japanese stock returns was investigated by observing the Tokyo Stock Price Index. Daily returns were observed between Apr 1978 and Jun 1987, and intra-day returns were observed between Jan 1982 and Dec 1987. The results indicated that low Tuesday and high Wednesday returns were seen with close-to-close returns, and the majority of the positive returns occurred during the non-trading period. The Monday effect occurred when the preceding week ended with Friday trading, and Japan's Tuesday effect appeared to be related to the Monday effect in the US stock market.
