Purpose This study aims to develop a photo-based methodology to identify occupants' collaborative image of the energy-efficient small-size housing. Design/methodology/approach Employing qualitative and quantitative approaches, 24 photos were randomly selected from different urban areas of Brisbane (Australia) city for an online survey. A total of 36 participants evaluated the photos 159 times. Findings Conducted content analysis resulted in the identification of 5 attribute-based factors, generated from 16 semantic categories and 74 attributes. Using a non-parametric Chi-square test, the factors were categorised in two levels, i.e. (1) envelope elements (primary and secondary) and passive climatic principles; and (2) architectural composition principles and neighbourhood quality. Social implications The discussion on the results via the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) suggests that regarding the external aspects, the people's image of energy-efficient housing could be influenced by their perceived control over changeable and adjustable attributes. Originality/value The photo-based methodology developed by this paper has the potential to quantify occupants' collaborative image of small-size housing energy efficiency, which would be essential in assisting them to adjust their dwelling units regarding the congruity of the energy efficiency attributes with their preferences.

In order to continue to deliver high quality service while meeting the goals expected of them, asset managers are increasingly required to utilize advances like advanced information management systems, automated data collection, and the integration of a range of data types. Through a review of asset management systems and research undertaken into its use in building design organizations in South-East Queensland, Australia, the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) for life cycle sustainable asset management is discussed. The results of this research indicate that while there has been development of BIM and other advanced information systems in asset management, further work is required to fully achieve the potential for using these systems. Options for better facilitating this process include improved sharing of BIM models, interoperability between systems, improved training and having an Open BIM approach to facilitate its development

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has the potential to significantly improve design, construction and asset management in the Architectural and Engineering (AE) industry, including optimising the life cycle of constructed facilities, and improving their ongoing sustainable development and operation. While the main focus to date of BIM development has been on its dimensional characteristics and its maturity levels, a greater understanding is required of how well industry is using this software in design. Research has accordingly been undertaken into the use of BIM as a management tool in the AE industry in South East Queensland, Australia, focusing primarily on SME businesses, with the purpose of identifying the extent of BIM use in design software, better understanding how BIM modelling software is used in the design process, and better aiding the discovery of improved pathways for its implementation. Achieving these goals can assist government and BIM enablers to facilitate the development of a common standard to aid industry participants to improve information sharing, collaboration and improved performance, thus impacting on positive built environment life cycle aspects like interoperability, design consistency, and improving sustainable development and management. The results of a mixed methods questionnaire, which consisted of a number of Likert scale questions, plus a number of short answer qualitative questions, which was sent to industry respondents on the use of BIM in the AE industry in South East Queensland suggest that while BIM has been quite widely adopted in the industry, SME businesses in the AE industry demonstrate relatively slow development in their use of BIM software. In addition, its functionality can be better utilized, and BIM can be diversified to include a greater range of users. This paper analyses a fourteen-year period of Western Australian data from the client information system of the Department for Child Protection and Family Support. Western Australia saw a large increase in the number of children in state care similar to trends across Australia as a whole. The study shows the following trends: changes in response to 'referrals' with particular increases in the number of findings of neglect and increasing proportions of these followed swiftly by entry to care; changes in patterns of entry to care with more children under one-year-old entering; increased length of stay of children in care; and, the high incidence of Aboriginal children entering and remaining in care. The data demonstrate unequivocally that increased 'referrals' are not associated with increased substantiations of harm or 'acts of commission with dangerous intent', but that neglect assessed early in the lives of children was the major precipitant for entry to care and particularly so for Aboriginal infants. This study of management information provides data on all reports, investigations and findings of maltreatment of children in Western Australia from their birth in 1990 or 1991 until their eighteenth birthday. It provides prevalence rates of children being reported, investigated and found to have been maltreated. A study of more recent cohorts shows trends in recent years. A key finding is that over 13 per cent of all children born in 1990 and 1991 were reported before reaching the age of eighteen, although 71 per cent of them were not found to have been maltreated. International data suggest this rate of one in eight children being reported may be equalled or exceeded in countries with an Anglo-American forensic child protection system. There was also a disturbing increase in reports of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in recent cohorts with an estimate that almost half of those born in 2004 had been reported before their fifth birthday. These findings add further evidence to the need for social work to address and severely limit investigative approaches. In this way, social workers will provide support rather than continuing practices involving high rates of surveillance and a focus on parental blame.

Towards the last quarter of the 20th century the revenue stream of major sporting organisations increasingly moved away from gate receipts towards sponsor endorsement. The shift was due to developments in the communications industries, in particular colour television and then two decades later the digital revolution, both of which placed the images of sport and the products it endorsed before audiences at times numbering into the millions.Psychological studies reveal that the more a consumer ‘identifies’ with a sport the more likely he or she is to purchase sponsors products associated with that sport. The association between product and sport is the basis of the lucrative ‘endorsement market’.The sporting organisation and the athlete are competitors in endorsement marketing. To combat this competition sporting organisations, as the dominant party, incorporated terms into player contracts restraining their athletes from engaging in endorsement marketing. This thesis argues that such restrictions are unreasonable under the common law restraint of trade doctrine. This thesis also considers the unique relationship between athletes and their sporting organisation and how changes in technology prompted courts to accept sport as an industry amenable to the restraint of trade doctrine.The application of the restraint of trade doctrine is a matter of policy. It is argued that an historical freedom of trade and the response of courts to changing technological paradigms are pertinent guides as the world enters the uncertain commerce of the digital age. A ‘21st century’ policy response under the restraint of trade doctrine is argued as necessary.It is argued that certain endorsement concessions granted by sporting bodies to athletes that give the appearance of a ‘partial restraint of trade’ are in fact so impractical that the overall unreasonableness of endorsement restraints cannot be offset.It is proposed that the athlete's persona, a

Roads perform an important connecting function for the community. At the same time their design, construction and operation are not always easy from the point of view of sustainability. Achieving sustainability in this process requires the undertaking of initiatives such as sound environmental management, water sensitive urban design, use of advanced and recycled materials, and environmentally responsible project management and construction. The contribution of such factors to a particular road project can be different for alternative options for constructing and managing the road. This can be an issue in comparing these options. A methodology is proposed to address this issue through calculating a weighted score of the sustainability related economic, environmental and social factors for each option, using a life cycle management approach that considers stakeholder requirements. As the variables in this process tend to be measured in a range of units and may be either quantitative or qualitative, each variable in a given road construction option is both given a weight and also assigned a suitable comparative score obtained though calculation for quantitative variables, or using a utility approach for qualitative variables. The calculated total weighted scores for various road construction and management options may then be compared when assessing the most sustainable option. An example calculation that compares the weighted sustainability for two road construction options is provided. The approach described is flexible and may be used in conjunction with other methodologies, and is also capable of being developed into a suitable computer based modelling tool.

The evidence suggests that highly-visible clients and project management firms, in addition to their subcontractors, will embrace such a code, while smaller firms not operating in high-profile contracting regimes may prove reticent. The paper incorporates qualitative data from a research project commissioned by Engineers Australia and supported by the Australian Contractors’ Association, Property Council of Australia, Royal Australian Institute of Architects, Association of Consulting Engineers Australia, Australian Procurement and Construction Council, Master Builders Australia and the Australian CRC for Construction Innovation. The paper aims to understand the factors that facilitate or prevent the uptake of the proposed VCP by smaller firms, together with pathways to adoption.
