4. Pressure-induced enhancement of Tc above 150 K in Hg-1223

Abstract

The recently discovered homologous series [HgBa.sub.2][Ca.sub.n-1][Cu.sub.n][O.sub.2n+2+δ] possesses remarkable properties. A superconducting transition temperature, [T.sub.c] as high as 133 kelvin has been measured in a multiphase Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O sample and found to be attributable to the Hg-1223 compound. Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity measurements under pressure on a (>95%) pure Hg-1223 phase are reported. These data show that [T.sub.c] increases steadily with pressure at a rate of about 1 kelvin per gigapascal up to 15 gigapascals, then more slowly and reaches a [T.sub.c] = 150 kelvin, with the onset of the transition at 157 kelvin, for 23.5 gigapascals. This large pressure variation (as compared to the small effects observed in similar compounds with the optimal [T.sub.c]) strongly suggests that higher critical temperatures could be obtained at atmospheric pressure., In analogy with the Bi- and Tl-based superconducting copper oxides, the structures of the [HgBa.sub.2][Ca.sub.n-1][CU.sub.n][O.sub.2n+2+δ], series are constructed with n [CuO.sub.2] layers sandwiched between rock-salt (BaO)([HgO.sub.δ,)(BaO) blocks. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2005-08-15 We study the transport properties of the charge-density-wave system Fe3 O2 BO3. ac conductivity measurements for different frequencies are presented for temperatures above and below the structural transition. dc conductivity, as a function of temperature and pressure, yields the variation of the transition temperature with external pressure. Below this transition the conductivity is thermally activated in a wide range of temperature and the gap obtained is strongly pressure dependent. The ac conductivity at sufficiently low temperatures below the transition is ascribed to the excitation of local defects associated with domain walls and which are characteristic of the one-dimensional nature of the Fe3 O2 BO3 system. © 2005 The American Physical Society. 10. Spin dynamics in the anisotropic spin glass Fe2TiO5

Abstract

We have studied spin-freezing phenomena along the magnetic easy axis of the insulating spin glass Fe2TiOS by magnetisation, AC susceptibility and neutron scattering experiments. The characteristic measurement time for these techniques varies over more than fourteen orders of magnitude. The results, which show a decrease of the freezing temperature with decreasing characteristic frequency, are analysed in terms of three models.
